Andrea Barzagli To Leave Wolfsburg For Juventus In January

Andrea Barzagli is expected to leave Wolfsburg for Juventus this winter.

Jan 11, 2011

According to a report on Tuttosport, experienced defender Andrea Barzagli is on the verge of leaving Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in the winter transfer window in order to return to Italy with Serie A giants Juventus.

The 29-year-old defender has an expiring contract at Wolfsburg and is reluctant to sign a new deal with the Woelfe. Therefore, the German side are widely expected to cash in on Barzagli in the winter transfer window.

However, Wolfsburg supposedly want to see whether Germany international Arne Friedrich is fully recovered from his back injury before offloading Barzagli. Friedrich is expected to feature for Wolfsburg in the match against Bayern Munich on January 15 before the Woelfe make a decision about Barzagli.

Juventus are eager to add some more depth to their back-line in the January transfer window and sporting director Giuseppe Marotta supposedly sees Barzagli as the perfect addition to his squad. The report claims that the Vecchia Signora have already agreed personal terms with the centre-back and the transfer could be completed next week.

Juventus Wrap Up Move For Andrea Barzagli

Juventus are about to land Andrea Barzagli from Wolfsburg after reaching an agreement over personal terms...

Jan 12, 2011

Juventus are on the verge of announcing the signing of Andrea Barzagli from Wolfsburg after settling a deal with club and player.

Il Corriere dello Sport claims the 29-year-old stopper, who is out of contract with the Germans, will pen a deal until 2013 in Turin and his arrival is expected to be announced within the next few days.

Juventus will not pay Wolfsburg for Barzagli, but it is said the German club will receive some form of discount on the money they are paying for the summer transfer of Diego.

Meanwhile, Tuttosport reports the Old Lady are still hunting for firepower up front after Fabio Quagliarella's ligament injury.

Atletico Madrid ace Diego Forlan is hot on the list of names, but landing him will will take some financial effort.

The Spanish giants value him at over

Andrea Barzagli Reveals Transfer Talks With Juventus Underway

Wolfsburg defender is hopeful of a successful outcome in negotiations with Juventus...

Jan 12, 2011

Amidst reports that Andrea Barzagli is on the verge of joining Juventus, the Wolfsburg defender himself has confirmed talks between the two clubs are taking place.

The 29-year-old has often been linked with a return to Serie A, despite playing a regular role for the struggling German club this season. He admitted he would favour a move to the Bianconeri, where he would compete for a place in the centre of defence with Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.

"Juve are certainly an important solution for me and I am glad there is some interest," he was quoted as saying by Sky Sport 24.

"I don't know anything about the details of the negotiations, the two clubs are speaking and then we'll see what happens."

Barzagli is expected to cost the Turin giants next to nothing as his contract with the Germans is due to expire in the summer. Instead, the Italians may offer Wolfsburg a discount on their continuing payments following their acquisition of Diego last summer.

Barzagli's contract with Die Wolfe is set to expire in June 2011 at which point he is likely to search for a return to Serie A. The player has maintained a steady standing in the Castrol Rankings this season, currently sitting at 1009.

Wolfsburg have endured a difficult Bundesliga campaign thus far, collecting 20 points from 18 matches.

Barzagli Believes Team Can End Season Positively

Andrea Barzagli eager to continue sparking Juventus revival as he identifies end of term aims...

Mar 25, 2011

Andrea Barzagli insists Juventus must pull together and salvage what they can from a season to forget, as they attempt to keep their European hopes alive.

The Bianconeri are five points behind the Europa League places after beating Brescia 2-1 last Sunday to end a five game winless streak, and the stopper is endorsing the idea the team can overcome the tasks that lie ahead.

"There are still eight games to go and plenty of points at stake. We can still show plenty, and end the season well," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"We have to aim as high as we can, as we are Juventus and we have objectives. It was not a nice period before the win last week, but now we must think positively.

"We can understand people are disappointed as they are used to seeing Juventus in high positions, but we hope to get back there soon."

Andrea Barzagli faces brief injury lay-off

The centre-back picked up a knock in his side's draw against Catania

at the weekend and will be sidelined for a few days.

Sep 26, 2011

Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli faces a brief injury lay-off after picking up an ankle problem in his side's 1-1 Serie A draw away against Catania on Sunday.

The centre-back sustained the injury in the second half of the encounter, and, although he was able to stay on the pitch for the full 90 minutes, he complained about pain in his ankle after the final whistle.

Barzagli visited a hospital after the game to undergo further examination, and a scan showed that he had bruised his ankle, Juventus have revealed on their official website.

His condition will be closely monitored over the next few days, but it appears increasingly likely that he will be required to sit out several training sessions.

It is not yet known if Barzagli will be match fit in time for next weekend's league match at home against AC Milan on October 2.

Barzagli delighted by Italy recall after three-year absence

The World Cup winner is glad to be back playing for his country

and feels his good form in Turin has allowed him to unlock the international door.

Oct 3, 2011

Andrea Barzagli has praised Juventus for his return to the Italy squad after three years of being in the international wilderness.

Coach Cesare Prandelli recalled the 2006 World Cup winner for their upcoming Euro 2012 Group C qualifying fixtures against Serbia and Northern Ireland.

Speaking during a press conference at Italy's Coverciano training base, the defender could not hide his delight.

"If I am here with Italy then it is because of Juventus. I am happy with what I am doing, but I can never be satisfied," Barzagli said.

Barzagli played in Juve's 2-0 win over AC Milan in Serie A on Sunday. The result allowed his club side to move back to the summit of the table, but the 30-year-old is keeping his feet on the ground.

"We are certainly not the favourites and we must remember just five games have been played so far," he said.

"We are on the right path, but it is hard to say who will be fighting for the title at this stage."

Italy are already through to the tournament in Poland and Ukraine having sealed qualification against Slovenia last month.

Andrea Barzagli: It's too early to say

whether Juventus are potential champions

The former Wolfsburg centre-back warns that AC Milan and Inter are still dangerous

despite their poor starts to the Serie A season.

Oct 4, 2011

Andrea Barzagli warns that AC Milan cannot yet be written off as title challengers, even though his Juventus side defeated them 2-0 in their Serie A encounter on Sunday evening.

Speaking at Italy's Coverciano training camp, the former Wolfsburg centre-back hailed the victory as "really important".

However, he also argued that a poor start to the Serie A season is insufficient reason to write-off both Milan and Inter.

"I continue to believe that the Rossoneri as well as Inter will play a key role this season, along with Napoli and Roma," Barzagli said.

"It's too early to say that we're one of the favoured teams to clinch the title."

Barzagli seeks consistency

October 15, 2011

Andrea Barzagli has urged his Juventus team-mates not to let up ahead of their Serie A encounter with Chievo on Sunday.

Antonio Conte's men are top of the league table after five matches, and the Juve defender hopes that will be still the case after 90 minutes in Verona.

"We must play Chievo without any fear so we can continue winning and give consistency to a season in which we have started very well," Barzagli told Sky Sport Italia.

Juventus were tipped as title candidates after their 2-0 win over AC Milan just before the international break, but the 30-year-old feels early predictions could be misleading.

"Juventus for the Scudetto? We are still at the start but it's always the case that papers start speaking about these things so early," Barzagli said.

"The important thing is to stay calm and we must prepare ourselves for each game. Then we will see what happens in the future."

The Turin giants have 11 points from five games this season and sit top alongside Udinese.

Andrea Barzagli sent home due to calf strain

The Juventus defender is not fit enough to continue as he drops out

of the Azzurri team to face Poland and Uruguay in the upcoming friendly internationals.

Nov 10, 2011

Italy centre-back Andrea Barzagli is the latest in a long list of injured players forced to withdraw from the squad.

Tuttosport reports that tests performed Barzagli on Thursday afternoon revealed he has suffered a calf strain.

That led to a consultation with coach Cesare Prandelli and it was decided the Juventus defender is not fit to continue.

The news means Barzagli will miss the international friendlies against Poland on Friday and Uruguay next Tuesday.

Barzagli joins Sebastian Giovinco, Antonio Cassano and Giuseppe Rossi who are all unavailable for Italy.

Barzagli set for Juve extension

Jan 11, 2012

Juventus have reportedly already started negotiations with Andrea Barzagli in a bid to extend his contract.

The international defender is only contracted to the club until June 2013 and a new deal seems to be on the horizon.

Barzagli, signed for less than €500,000 from Wolfsburg last January, has played in every minute of all Juventus’ games so far this season.

According to Tuttosport, the Turin giants have held initial talks with the World Cup winner’s representative.

It’s unclear at this stage whether the Old Lady will offer the 30-year-old fresh terms until June 2014 or 2015.

The chief of defence

Initially signed as a squad player last January, Andrea Barzagli is now

an unexpected key element in Juventus’ Scudetto bid. Antonio Labbate writes.

Jan 11, 2012

Fabio Cannavaro had no doubts when he was asked earlier this season who, at the time, was Italy’s best defender. “Andrea Barzagli,” he responded with conviction. “He has experience and he has picked himself up after a difficult spell. I’ve congratulated Juventus President Andrea Agnelli for bringing him back to Italy. That was an excellent move.”

Cannavaro knows Barzagli well. They were teammates at the 2006 World Cup when Andrea, under the guidance of the Italy captain, played his part in the Azzurri’s German triumph following injury to Alessandro Nesta and suspension to Marco Materazzi.

Barzagli had just turned 25 and was widely considered as an international regular of the future. Things didn’t quite turn out as anticipated. In 2008 he decided to leave Palermo and was expected to move on to a bigger club which could match his ambitions. Instead he ended up at Wolfsburg in Germany.

“After four years at Palermo it was time to go,” the centre-back recalled. “There was an agreement between myself and the Rosanero that we would part company. I was waiting for a big club to come in for me, but they all had excellent defenders already. Wolfsburg offered me a good contract and I decided to sign for them.”

The Bundesliga switch may have benefitted him financially and saw him win a League title, but it came at a cost in his homeland. The longer he remained abroad, the more forgettable he became. He then disappeared from the international scene completely after a pretty shaky performance in Italy’s unconvincing 2-1 win against Cyprus back in September 2008.

It wasn’t until this time last year that Barzagli entered Italian football’s consciousness again. With a contract coming to its end, Juventus opted to net him for €300,000 – less than three years after Wolfsburg agreed to pay almost €12m. He was initially signed on a contract until 2013 as a squad player, but today he’s one of the cornerstones on which the Old Lady’s Scudetto bid is built.

So far this season under Antonio Conte he’s been an untouchable in the team. He’s played in every second of the side’s Serie A campaign, totalling 1,618 minutes of action – a stat only matched by right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner. He also featured in the 120 minutes that it took his team to dispose of Bologna in the Coppa Italia.

“It’s down to hard work,” Barzagli says of his rejuvenation. “As a player, there are seasons which go well. Saying that, joining a club like Juventus is the maximum for anyone. I just do what I need to do on a daily basis to make sure that I deserve to wear this shirt.”

Barzagli may not have great speed or even the technical ability of current centre-back partner Leonardo Bonucci, but what he does have over his younger colleague is focus, positional sense, as well as an understanding and reading of the game which he has acquired over the years. He’s also disciplined given that his last booking came in May last season in the game against Napoli.

As it stands, Juventus have the second best defence in the land with 11 goals against – just one more than Udinese. They’ve kept a clean sheet in their last three Serie A games and six from their last eight. The last goal they conceded was against Roma in Week 15 – 355 minutes ago – when Arturo Vidal miserably failed to clear a Daniele De Rossi effort. Not bad stats from a team whose defence was viewed as their Achilles’ heel at the start of the season.

“We all have to stay alert and concentrated,” the 30-year-old says. “As soon as the defenders lose focus for an instant then things can get complicated. But Coach Conte is always stimulating us and that is important for a defender like myself. We have a great midfield, a great attack and if we at the back don’t concede then one of our strikers will put the ball in sooner or later.”

Barzagli’s form hasn’t been lost on Italy boss Cesare Prandelli either. Dealing with a shortage of quality stoppers, an area that the Italian game once excelled at, the former Under-21 international returned to the international stage in October 2011 to win his 26th and 27th caps. “I didn’t think that my Azzurri career was a closed book, but I admit that I did stop thinking about it…”

Euro 2012 now awaits, as does a possible Scudetto and a probable new contract.

Barzagli remains Juve constant

Feb 9, 2012

Andrea Barzagli wasn’t rested for last night’s Coppa Italia tie which means he continued his record of playing every minute of Juventus’ campaign so far.

The central defender was expected by some to be given a break against Milan, with Martin Caceres coming into the back-three.

However, boss Antonio Conte decided to use the Uruguayan on the flank and field a defence consisting of Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

The January 2011 signing from Wolfsburg has started in all 21 League games and three Coppa Italia ties so far under Conte. He hasn’t been replaced in any of them.

His closest rivals at the club in terms of appearances this season are Stephan Lichtsteiner, Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Pirlo with 22 games each.

Juventus to offer Andrea Barzagli contract extension

The Old Lady are ready to reward the fine form shown by the Italy centre-back

this season by renewing his current deal, which presently expires in 2013, for a further year.

Feb 11, 2012

Juventus are hoping to tie up a contract extension for defender Andrea Barzagli in the near future, according to La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport.

The 30-year-old had penned a two-year deal upon his arrival from Wolfsburg last January, but after becoming an important part of Antonio Conte's plans, the club are now preparing to renew his terms until 2014.

However, it is expected that talks will not formally commence until the end of the month, as general manager Giuseppe Marotta will speak to the stopper in regards to extending his stay in Turin.

Barzagli has been an ever-present fixture at the back for Juventus this season, and has played a key role in the side's unbeaten start to the season, having formed impressive partnerships with the likes of Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini at the back.

Barzagli at Juve until 2014

Feb 13, 2012

Centre-back Andrea Barzagli is on the verge of signing a new contract with Italian giants Juventus.

The Italian international is only contracted to the club until June 2013 and a new deal seems to be on the horizon.

Barzagli, signed for less than €500,000 from Wolfsburg last January, has played in every minute of all Juventus’ games so far this season.

The two parties are understood to have held initial talks regarding an extension until June 2014 for the 30-year-old. The deal may include an option for a further season.

It is being claimed that a new round of talks will soon take place before the signatures are added to the paperwork.

Barzagli’s form at Juventus has caught the eye of Italy boss Cesare Prandelli and the World Cup winner is now a contender to make Euro 2012.

Juve trio queue for extensions

Feb 23, 2012

Juventus will make moves to extend the contracts of Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Barzagli and Paolo De Ceglie.

The trio of players are currently only tied to the Turin giants until June 2013 – but all three want to be kept by the Old Lady.

Goalkeeper Buffon, now 34, is set to be handed a new deal until 2016, although he will be asked to take a cut to his current €6m a season salary.

Barzagli, meanwhile, has already agreed in principle to continue his career in Turin. All that is missing is a signature on an extension until 2014 for the centre-back.

Left-sided player De Ceglie, a product of the club’s youth system, will soon start negotiations about his future.

The former Italian Under-21 international has been linked with both Milan and Roma in the past, but La Signora are considering offering him improved terms until 2016.

Barzagli next up for Juventus

May 1, 2012

Andrea Barzagli is set to become the latest Juventus player to be handed a new contract by the club.

Fabio Quagliarella signed until 2015 on Monday, joining the likes of Paolo De Ceglie, Leonardo Bonucci and Alessandro Matri in committing themselves to the Old Lady.

Centre-back Barzagli will reportedly be the next Bianconeri to put pen to paper on a new agreement in Turin.

The 2006 World Cup winner is only contracted to the Old Lady until June 2013. He will extend until 2014 or 2015.

The former Palermo stopper joined Juve in January 2011 for a nominal fee of €600,000 from German club Wolfsburg.

Barzagli, 30, made 15 League appearances last term and he’s currently on 32 games in Serie A this term.

Goalkeeper Gigi Buffon, contracted until 2013, is also being tipped to extend his stay at the club.
