Juventus, Lichtsteiner €1m apart

Oct 30, 2014

Stephan Lichtsteiner continues to be linked with a move away from Juventus, with the parties reputedly still €1m apart in contract renewal talks.

The Swiss defender’s current contract expires in the summer, and the full-back has been increasingly linked with a move away from Turin, with Arsenal most recently suggested as set to offer the 30-year-old an opportunity in the Premier League.

Such a move could be drawing closer with Tuttosport reporting that Juventus’ offer of €2m per season plus bonuses for a three-year contract remains some way short of the former Lazio man’s request.

It is believed that Lichtsteiner is unwilling to accept anything less than €3m per annum for the same three-year deal, a figure which the Bianconeri are unwilling to meet.

The stall in negotiations is reported to have alerted numerous other clubs to the possible availability of the right-back, with Paris Saint-Germain named alongside Arsenal as interested.

As previously reported, Inter may also try to tempt Lichtsteiner to stay in Italy, although his relatively advanced age may be deterrent to President Erick Thohir’s intended approach.

Roma join Lichtsteiner hunt

Nov 10, 2014

Roma are the latest team being linked with a move for Juventus full-back Stephen Lichtsteiner, but Beppe Marotta remains confident.

The Swiss international has been a key player for the Bianconeri since moving from the Giallorossi’s city rivals Lazio, but has still to put pen to paper on a new contract in Turin.

A failure to agree terms with the Old Lady has led to speculation that Lichtsteiner could depart in the summer when his contract expires, with Arsenal and Inter being linked in recent weeks.

Rumours over the past few days have put the wing-back and Juventus ever closer to a new deal, but now Calciomercato believes that Roma have entered the fray to secure the signature of the 30-year-old.

The website states that while Juventus are closer to agreeing a new deal with the player, as the salary the Bianconeri are believed willing to pay is now €2.5m.

However, still short of the €3m Lichtsteiner is angling for, the door is apparently still open for the Giallorossi, who are searching for a reliable right-back given their first-choice at the moment - Douglas Maicon - is 33.

Calciomercato indicates that the capital club would be willing to accede to Lichtsteiner’s demands, given they could secure the Swiss on a free contract.

Despite the rumours, Juventus director general Giuseppe Marotta is confident Lichtsteiner will remain in Turin.

“We’re talking about it [the renewal],” Marotta told Sky.

“The player has requirements, but we have to take our budget into account. In any case, I’m confident [that he’ll stay].”

Danilo to replace Lichtsteiner?

Dec 2, 2014

Stephan Lichtsteiner’s contract saga rumbles on, with the latest reports indicating that Juventus could bring in Danilo to replace the full-back.

The Swiss international’s contract expires at the end of the season, and his negotiations with the Bianconeri have been the source of much rumour and speculation in recent weeks.

It had been thought that the Old Lady were moving closer to an agreement with the former Lazio right-back, heading off interest from the likes of Inter and Manchester City.

However, Gianluca Di Marzio’s website is today reporting that Lichtsteiner is closer to the exit door than to putting pen to paper.

The site believes that the two parties are no closer to reaching an agreement, with Juventus’ offer still falling short of Lichtsteiner’s wage demands, and the 30-year-old seriously considering leaving at the end of the season.

According to the website, this has led Juventus to seek alternatives, and it believes that one such alternative is Danilo of Porto.

Di Marzio’s web page states that the Old Lady have already submitted a €10m bid for the 23-year-old with wages on offer thought to be in the region of €2m - a figure €1m less than Lichtsteiner’s reported demands.

It’s believed that Porto would not be keen on losing the player, but with Juventus initiating contact Di Marzio reports that the Serie A champions do have options should Lichtsteiner head for the exit.

Lichtsteiner close to renewal?

Dec 10, 2014

Stephan Lichtsteiner’s contract saga could be approaching a conclusion, with reports indicating the Juventus defender is close to a renewal.

The full-back’s contract expires in the summer, and the Swiss international has been linked with numerous clubs including Arsenal, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain as talks over a new deal have dragged on.

However, Gianluca Di Marzio’s website is today reporting that the former Lazio man is close to renewing his contract in Turin.

According to the site the player’s agent, Federico Pastorello, held a meeting with Juventus hierarchy in Turin this afternoon at Juventus HQ.

While an agreement has not yet been reached, Di Marzio reports that the two parties have provisionally agreed on a deal which would run until 2017.

Lichtsteiner prefers back four

Dec 11, 2014

Juventus’ Stephan Lichtsteiner admits he prefers Massimiliano Allegri’s back four to Antonio Conte’s three-man defence.

The Bianconeri won three successive Scudetti under Conte playing in a 3-5-2 system. However, Conte left in the summer, being replaced by Allegri, who has gradually changed to a 4-3-1-2 shape.

“I prefer to play as a four,” Lichtsteiner told JTV, the club’s television channel.

“I’ve always said that, even though I feel good in a three as well. It’s not new for me, because I played in a back four with Lazio.

“Even in the first part of Conte’s first season we played with four, it’s a bit easier for me because you play with the ball more and run less.

“You’re better protected, because there’s always someone close to you. With the 3-5-2 sometimes you can get isolated, for me it’s easier as a back four.”

Stephan Lichtsteiner agree to contract extension through 2017

Dec 12, 2014

When Beppe Marotta shelled out around €10 million for then-Lazio right back Stephan Lichtsteiner in the summer of 2011, some folks wondered why the Juventus director general would pay so much for such an unglamorous position. Well, three and a half years later, Lichtsteiner has become one of Juventus' most important players at a position that previous club officials never truly addressed.

Don't worry, though. The lovely Lichtsteiner-Juventus marriage isn't over just yet.

That's because reports out of the Italian press on Thursday say that Lichtsteiner has agreed to a contract extension through 2017, ending what was a long and thorough negotiation period between the player and the club. According to those same reports, Lichtsteiner — whose current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2014-15 season — is expected to get a yearly salary raise from his €2 million figure this year to €2.6 in his new deal.

mirkograziano @mirkogazzetta
Lichtsteiner rinnoverà con la Juve fino al 2017: prima di Natale l'annuncio.

You don't need an Italian-to-English dictionary to figure out what is being reported here.

First reaction: Good, damn good.

As negotiations between the two sides went on and on and on over the last few months, many folks wondered if Juventus and Lichtsteiner were headed toward the end of the road. Other teams were rumored to be swirling just in case the Swiss right back didn't agree to a new deal with Juventus. And it's not like reports of "Juventus and Lichtsteiner not close in negotiations" really helped the matter at all.

But all of that chatter is in the past now with Thursday's reports coming to the surface.

And with it, we can check Lichtsteiner's name off the list of those players rumored to be line for a contract extension. Let the guessing games begin as to who is next. At least we know now that the Swiss Express will be bombing up and down the right sideline for the next couple of season at the very minimum. I'm a full supporter of that.

Lichtsteiner Agrees Juventus Extension

Dec 20, 2014

Juventus and Stephan Lichtsteiner have come to an agreement to extend the Swiss defender’s contract for a further two years.

Lichtsteiner’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the current season, but the new terms should see him remain at the Juventus Arena until 2017.

Sky Sport Italia reveal that the two parties have come to an agreement that will see the former Lazio man’s contract renewed for another two seasons after which there will be an option to extend it for a third year.

Lichtsteiner has recently attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United but in signing a deal that will take him up until he is 33-years-old, should end speculation linking him with a move away from Turin.

Since joining the Bianconeri in 2011, Lichtsteiner has become a mainstay in the Juventus side, making more than 100 Serie A appearances for the club and winning three Scudetti in the process.

Lichtsteiner renewal imminent

Dec 24, 2014

Stephan Lichtsteiner is on the verge of renewing with Juventus, with courtship from Manchester United turned down at least until the summer.

Rumours that a deal had been reached between the Swiss and the Old Lady circulated during last week, following months of speculation to the contrary.

Today, Tuttosport indicates that the agreement has been finalised and that an official announcement is imminent. The new contract will see Lichtsteiner earning €3m a year until 2017.

This dashes reported hopes from United, who were reported last week to have offered a check for €25m to have the player in January.

While the operation is not necessarily ruled out, in the best of cases Tuttosport say that it has been deferred until the summer.

Much will apparently depend on whether and when Juventus will be able to acquire the services of Barcelona's Martin Montoya.

At the moment the Blaugrana are asking for €20m, which Juventus are reluctant to offer, preferring a solution involving an initial loan.

Lichtsteiner: Juventus Moving On
After Suppercoppa Italiana Defeat

Dec 24, 2014

Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner has revealed that the Old Lady are looking to move on from their Supercoppa Italiana defeat to Napoli by preparing to do well in the new year.

The Bianconeri battled with the Partenopei in a 2-2 draw that eventually went to penalties, where the reigning Serie A champions eventually fell to their Neapolitan opponents, but the 30-year-old admits that there’s no point in remaining upset by the loss and believes it’s time for the Turin giants to look ahead.

Lichtsteiner spoke through his official Facebook page about the disappointing defeat to Napoli and expressed his enthusiasm to begin working hard ahead of Juve’s next match against Inter on January 6.

“There is a great amount of disappointment after the defeat in the Supercoppa Italiana,” said the Swiss international. “But it’s useless to continue feeling sad over this.

“Now we must roll up our sleeves and look ahead! Thanks for your support! Forza Juventus!”

Why Stephan Lichtsteiner Is the Unsung
Hero for Juventus so Far This Season

Dec 26, 2014

Upon arriving in Turin, Massimiliano Allegri was given little chance to improve upon the results delivered by his predecessor. Three consecutive league titles, an undefeated season and a record Serie A points haul last term made following in Antonio Conte’s footsteps an unenviable task.

While debate over whether the tweak in formation and progress in the Champions League will continue, any perceived success for the new coach will only be determined at the end of the campaign. Yet Allegri is not the only man in Turin walking in the shadow of greatness, many of the current Bianconeri squad are compared to the legends whose positions they now fill.

Carlos Tevez has seemingly never struggled with the pressure of wearing the number 10 shirt, despite the inevitable mentions of Alessandro Del Piero. It is the same for Stephan Lichtsteiner, a player who has not only been deployed in a right-back role once occupied by the likes of Lillian Thuram and Sergio Brio but has also filled a long-standing void there.

Following the retirement of Ciro Ferrara and Thuram’s subsequent move into the centre of defence, a string of sub-standard players failed to impress there for Juventus. Cristian Zenoni, Jonathan Zebina and Zdenek Grygera were collectively poor, while Marco Motta was a complete disaster following his €5 million move in 2010.

It was in an attempt to end this malaise that Beppe Marotta signed Lichtsteiner, paying €10 million to Lazio to secure the “Swiss Express.” It has proven to be one of the director general’s best signings, such have been the consistently excellent standards set by the now-30-year-old defender over the last three seasons.

He may not have the star power of Tevez, Paul Pogba or Arturo Vidal, but he has been every bit as important in the success enjoyed by the Bianconeri. Able to play as either a wing-back in the 3-5-2 or an orthodox full-back in a four-man defence, Lichtsteiner has been one of the most reliable members of the team during the club’s recent dominant run.

He admitted in a recent interview with Juventus TV (h/t Football Italia) that he finds it “a bit easier” in a back four, noting he feels less isolated and “better protected” in the new shape. The performances of both Lichtsteiner and the team have benefitted from that change as he has once again dominated the right flank.

Averaging 1.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 2.1 clearances per game according in Serie A, according to statistics from WhoScored.com, the former Lille man has also weighed in with two goals and four assists. Injuries to Martin Caceres and new signing Romulo have left Allegri with few chances to rest him, yet his quality has continued to shine.

Never a prolific creator of goals—his previous best single-season tally for assists was two—he laid on eight goals last term, his crossing becoming a major weapon for the Bianconeri. The presence of Fernando Llorente gave him a target to aim for, and he repeatedly picked out the 6’5” Spaniard in the opposition penalty area.

OptaPaolo @OptaPaolo
7 - Stephan Lichtsteiner has delivered 7 assists in Serie A this season; 6 of these were for Fernando Llorente’s goals. Duo.

In the current campaign, he has learned to provide for others, laying on goals for Tevez and Alvaro Morata as well as Llorente thanks to his increasingly accurate passing. Stats from the official Juventus website show he has completed 25 percent of all his crosses this term, creating 14 clear goalscoring opportunities for his team-mates.

Massimo Pinca/Associated Press
In addition, last season he connected on just 78.3 per cent of his pass attempts and WhoScored shows that not only has that improved to 80.3 percent this term, but he also raises his game when the competition is at its most difficult. In the Champions League his completion rate rises to 84.9 percent, while he also makes more tackles (1.7) and passes (54.2) per game than in domestic action.

It is those small yet significant improvements that will help La Madama progress in Europe, and Lichtsteiner is set to be rewarded for his stellar play. With his current deal set to expire in June, respected journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has reported the agreement of a new three year contract that will see the player earn around €3 million per season.

Now not only an unsung hero for Juventus but arguably one of the best right-backs in the world, Stephan Lichtsteiner has earned every penny of it.

Manchester United Transfer News:
Dissecting Stephan Lichtsteiner January Rumours

Dec 26, 2014

Manchester United have reportedly lined up a summer move to bring in Juventus' Stephan Lichtsteiner as a free agent, spurning a January transfer and moving ahead of a host of other interested teams.

The Daily Express' Ben Jefferson claims "reports in Spain" indicate the Swiss international has seen contract negotiations with Juventus come to nothing, and the Bianconeri will choose to hold on to the defender for another six months rather than cash in now:

The Juventus defender is entering the last six months of his current deal and talks over an extension have broken down.

Arsenal and Chelsea have both been monitoring Lichtsteiner's situation having weighed up moves for the Swiss defender in the past.

And while both clubs could look to hijack United's interest by making a bid for the player next month, Juventus are keen to keep hold of one of their stars for as long as possible.

That means that Lichtsteiner will be available for nothing in the summer and reports in Spain suggest that United are the frontrunners for the player's signature.

Jefferson offers no explanation why Spanish sources would have knowledge of this development instead of sources from Italy or England, and he goes on to claim Louis van Gaal's primary target, Juan Cuadrado, will be passed over because he signed a new contract with Fiorentina.

The Dutch manager has switched between a 3-5-2 and more traditional formations throughout the 2014-15 campaign, and with the number of wide men capable of playing in a 3-5-2 rather limited, his interest in Lichtsteiner certainly makes sense.

The 30-year-old developed into one of the world's better full-backs under former coach Antonio Conte and was instrumental in his implementing of the 3-5-2, thanks to an impressive pair of lungs and a willingness to run, defend and attack for 90 minutes.

Defending the Swiss Express is a nightmare due to his sheer athleticism. Lichtsteiner simply won't stop running, is opportunistic cutting inside and is not afraid to be very physical with his opponent if the situation calls for it.

Bleacher Report's Adam Digby did a feature on Lichtsteiner recently, hailing him as Juventus' biggest unsung hero of the campaign. His conclusion tells a whole different story than Jefferson's, however:

It is those small yet significant improvements that will help La Madamaprogress in Europe, and Lichtsteiner is set to be rewarded for his stellar play.

Italian media have been following contract negotiations between Lichtsteiner and Juventus for months, and all stories coming out of Turin seem to indicate the two parties have agreed to a new deal, with an announcement expected before the January window opens.

Tuttomercatoweb reported the agreement on Boxing Day, via Khaled Al Nouss:

Khaled Al Nouss @KhaledAlNouss
Lichtsteiner has accepted the renewal offer made for him by Juventus until 2017 with an option for another yr worth €3m/season.

Tuttosport said the same thing two days earlier, via Football Italia:

Today, Tuttosport indicates that the agreement has been finalised and that an official announcement is imminent. The new contract will see Lichtsteiner earning €3m a year until 2017.

This dashes reported hopes from United, who were reported last week to have offered a check for €25m to have the player in January.

While the operation is not necessarily ruled out, in the best of cases Tuttosport say that it has been deferred until the summer.

English media have been adamant contract negotiations have hit a roadblock for months now, but every single Italian source with knowledge of the situation refutes such reports.

As one of Juventus' most consistent contributors, the idea Lichtsteiner would become a free agent without the Bianconeri putting up a real fight was absurd to begin with. The Swiss international has given no indication of wanting to leave, and according to Sky Italia's Manuele Baiocchini, all that is needed to finalise a deal is an official announcement:

Manuele Baiocchini ✔ @ManuBaio
#Juventus, #Lichtsteiner: renewed contract until 2017 (with option 2018). All defined. Official in January.

As it stands, the chances of Lichtsteiner joining the Red Devils as a free agent in the summer look slim. A January move also seems unlikely, with the next possible window for a move being the summer of 2015.

The full-back will be 31 by that time, having played in Italy since 2008. Tuttosport's claim of a €25 million bid seems reasonable value for such an important contributor, but it's very steep for a veteran with maybe two or three more good years left before the inevitable decline.

Even more than most full-backs, Lichtsteiner relies on his athleticism and speed to beat his opponent. Those attributes are usually the first to feel the effects of old age, and his performances could start dropping fast in the next couple of seasons.

His fit in the 3-5-2 makes him an interesting target, but one has to wonder whether Van Gaal would be willing to spend big money on an aging player who won't sell many shirts or inspire fans, given his relative anonymity outside of Italy.

Bleacher Report's Andy Brassell and Ryan Bailey recently broke down United's transfer needs, and the players they suggested had far more ring to their names than Lichtsteiner:

Diego Godin, Miranda, Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger are world-class players fans talk about every day; Lichtsteiner simply doesn't fit into that list.

The Swiss star is happy in Turin, set to sign a new deal and doesn't present enough long-term upside to warrant a big-money move. While you can't rule anything out in football, it appears unlikely he'll be moving to Old Trafford anytime soon.

Manchester United to move for Stephan Lichtsteiner

Dec 27, 2014

Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer next summer.

The Swiss international will be out of contract at the Italian outfit in June and as it stands, talks over a new deal have stalled.

A number of clubs have been linked with a move for the 30-year-old, but according to The Express, United are now at the head of the queue.

Lichsteiner is one of the few specialist wing-backs in European football and it is understood that United boss Louis van Gaal is preparing to continue with a 3-5-2 formation next season.

The former Lille defender has won three league titles and two Italian cups during his time in Turin.

Manchester City Set To Pursue Lichtsteiner

Dec 31, 2014

Manchester City are reportedly ready to pursue Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner during the January transfer window.

The 30-year-old, who is currently set to be out of a contract with the Bianconeri in June, has drawn the attention of a number of Premier League teams as of late including Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, though it seems the Citizens are now prepared to enter the race for his signature as well.

According to Quotidiano Sportivo, Manchester City would still be interested in making a bid for the Swiss international despite his ongoing negotiations with Juventus to sign a new contract in the coming weeks and could present a considerable offer in order to lure the defender away from the Old Lady this winter.

The right back, who joined at Juve from Lazio in June 2011, has scored two goals and provided four assists in his 15 Serie A appearances this season thus far, giving him a total of 12 goals in his 106 league appearances for the Turin giants since his arrival.

Juventus Ready To Offer Lichtsteiner New Deal

Jan 1, 2015

Juventus are reportedly ready to offer Stephan Lichtsteiner a new deal in the coming weeks despite rumours claiming otherwise.

The 30-year-old, whose current contract with the Bianconeri is set to expire in June, has been heavily linked with a January move to Manchester United due to complications in negotiating a new agreement with the Old Lady, but is now apparently on the verge of signing a renewal with the Turin giants.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Swiss international’s new contract will see him remain at Juventus until 2017, with an option to extend his stay until 2018 in time, and will have him earn around €3 million per season.

Reports suggest that while negotiations are now complete between Juve and the former Lazio man, the reigning Serie A champions will hold off on officially announcing the news until mid-January.

Lichtsteiner has scored two goals and provided four assists in his 15 Serie A appearances this season thus far.

Lichtsteiner agrees two-year Juventus deal

The defender's contract was set to expire in the summer
but the Bianconeri have ensured he will remain in Turin until at least 2017.

Jan 13, 2015

Juventus have announced Stephan Lichtsteiner has agreed a new two-year deal with the club with the option of an additional third year.

The right-back's contract was set to expire in the summer and there were reports a number of teams across Europe were ready to make a move for his services.

But Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri has moved swiftly to ward off any interest by tying him down to a new deal that will see him remain in Turin until at least the summer of 2017.

A statement on the club's official website read: "The player has signed a new agreement for two more years, with an option in favour of the club for the third. The journey of the Swiss Express continues alongside Juve!"

Lichtsteiner joined the Serie A giants from Lazio in 2011, and has since made 134 appearances for the club.

The Switzerland international has won three successive Scudetti in that time, all under Antonio Conte, and is on course for a fourth with Juve leading the table under the guidance of Allegri.

Lichtsteiner: Juventus Want To Win It All

Feb 13, 2015

Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner has stated in a recent interview that the Bianconeri want to try to win everything this season.

The Swiss international has also discussed his side’s recent run of good form, however he has admitted that if they are to achieve success in Europe then they must avoid complacency.

“We we want to try to win everything,” said the 31-year-old to Premiumsport.com

“Some have said that we need to play with more tenacity and malice and I agree that you can always improve.

“However recently we have been doing very well, we have conceded few goals and created a lot.

“Although in the Champions League, you cannot make mistakes.”

Lichtsteiner also discussed their upcoming match in the Champions League against German side Borussia Dortmund, as well as his own personal ambitions for the remainder of the season.

“Borussia Dortmund are a great team and despite the fact that they are doing poorly in the Bundesliga, they are still a strong force in Europe.

“My main aim is to simply carry on winning, it is in the DNA of this club to win.

“Ultimately, the dream is to win the Champions League.”

Lichtsteiner Faces Surgery After Champions League Final

May 30, 2015

Juventus right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner is set to undergo ankle surgery following the Champions League final against Barcelona.

The club have adopted a pragmatic approach involving day-to-day management of the injury in order to maintain the Swiss defender’s match-fitness, but must now accept the inevitable in booking the post-season procedure.

According to Tuttosport, the 31-year-old has been suffering with pain and inflammation in his left ankle for sometime, meaning a cleaning out of the troublesome area has finally become necessary. They state an operation to solve the problem will take place around mid-June, after further examinations have been undertaken by specialists.

Lichtsteiner has been in fine form for the Serie A and Coppa Italia double winners, while making 47 appearances in all competitions so far this term.

However, he may not be risked during Saturday’s away league fixture at Hellas Verona in an effort to ensure his availability for June 6 in Berlin.

Juventus Looking To Land Manchester City Or Monaco
Fullbacks To Give Rest To Lichtsteiner

Jun 13, 2015

Juventus are keeping tabs on several fullbacks as they look for a suitable backup for current starter Stephan Lichtsteiner.

The Swiss Express, as he is commonly referred to, has been an undisputed starter for the Bianconeri since joining the club back in 2011 but it appears as though Juve are keen to sign a player that could challenge Lichtsteiner for his starting roll.

Tuttosport report that topping the list of possible targets are Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta and Monaco’s Fabinho.

Zabaleta has been a regular for City at right back since being brought to the club from Espanyol back in 2008, along with becoming Javier Zanetti’s successor in the Argentina team.

A more likely option is Fabinho from Monaco as the Brazilian has just recently signed a permanent deal in the principality following a successful two year loan spell from Portuguese club Rio Ave.

With Monaco still under restrictions due to Financial Fair Play, it is believed they are open to selling several of their players with Fabinho being one of those possible departures.

If no deal can be struck for either player then Juventus could look towards another Swiss player, with Silvan Widmer from Udinese also drawing interest from the Bianconeri.

Stephan Lichtsteiner Compares Favourably
vs. Europe's Best Right-Backs

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2523734-juventus-stephan-lichtsteiner-compares-favourably-vs-europes-best-right-backs?

Jul 16, 2015

Stephan Lichtsteiner has been a superb player for Juventus, the Swiss international having helped the Bianconeri win the Serie A title in each of his four seasons with the club. Arriving from fellow Italian side Lazio in the summer of 2011, he has proved to be excellent value for the €10 million fee paid by the Turin giants.

If the club can clinch a fifth-consecutive Scudetto next term, Lichtsteiner would become a member of only the third team ever to achieve that feat, following in the footsteps of Juve’s 1930s' side and the Torino team that dominated the following decade.

Making a major contribution to that success, the question of whether the 31-year-old should be seen among the world’s best at his position is raised, given he maintains an incredible level of consistency every time he steps on the field.

With that in mind, what follows is a comparison between Lichtsteiner and his contemporaries in the right-back role. Dani Alves of Barcelona, Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Real Madrid star Daniel Carvajal are often touted as Europe’s best, while Danilo—who has joined Real Madrid from Porto—has also been included.

The latter has already made 14 appearances for Brazil and won seven major honours, a tally he will clearly hope to add to at the Santiago Bernabeu. Eldest of the five men, Alves leads the way in this department, lifting no fewer than 29 trophies throughout his career, which puts him far ahead of Lichtsteiner’s tally of 10 as well as Ivanovic (9) and Carvajal (6).

In terms of individual statistics—which appear courtesy of WhoScored.com, unless otherwise stated—the first category analysed was tackling. That site's figures show Alves again as the front-runner, averaging 4.1 per game in 2014/15, which ranked fifth among all players across Europe’s top five leagues.

Carvajal made an impressive 2.9 himself, with Ivanovic (2.3), Danilo (2.1) and Lichtsteiner (1.3) unable to better those tallies.

Winning a higher percentage of battles while committing fewer fouls and making no defensive errors shows just how reliable Lichtsteiner has become, now integral to a Juve back line that kept an incredible 19 clean sheets in Serie A last term.

The full-back is no less impressive at the other end of the field, weighing in with three goals and five assists in his 26 league starts. Ivanovic scored once more and matched Lichtsteiner’s tally of assists, while Danilo netted on six occasions and Carvajal failed to get his name on the scoresheet.

Carvajal also created three goals, a figure Alves bettered with six, and it is no surprise to see the Barcelona man also leads the way here too in what is a key weapon for any player in this role. He connected with an average of 1.2 crosses per game for Barcelona, but Lichtsteiner is comfortably second, as his 0.8 per game is exactly double the tally managed by Carvajal, Danilo and Ivanovic (all 0.4).

However, at 1.85 metres tall, the Chelsea star—who is slightly taller than Danilo (1.84 metres)—leads all five men in terms of headers won with 2.6 per game. That hints at his ability to also play in central defence, with Lichtsteiner (1.2) again second ahead of Alves (0.9), Danilo (0.9) and Carvajal (0.7).

While he may trail the slightly older Alves in terms of crosses, trophies won and tackles made, Lichtsteiner has the edge in other areas that mark him out as perhaps a better defender without sacrificing too much in the way of offensive input.

He will undoubtedly be ready to help Juventus clinch that record-equalling fifth league title next season and etch his name into the rich history of Italian football’s grand old lady. “Lifting a trophy shows how hard you worked,” the Swiss star told me in an interview with the Independent, “and remembering it gives you the energy and motivation to do it again!”

Lichtsteiner: ‘Heat, fatigue, bad luck’

http://www.football-italia.net/70634/lichtsteiner-%E2%80%98heat-fatigue-bad-luck%E2%80%99?

Aug 6, 2015

Juventus full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner says ‘heat, fatigue and bad luck’ are to blame for injury problems, but believes they are Supercoppa favourites.

The Switzerland international will face his former club Lazio in Shanghai on Saturday in the Supercoppa Italiana and thinks it will be hard for Juve to improve on last season.

“Heat, fatigue, bad luck are to blame,” he told giornalaccio rosa dello Sport when asked about an injury crisis that has hit Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli, Sami Khedira and Alvaro Morata.

“If you add the high temperatures, 40 degrees in Turin, and double workouts, you understand that it’s easier to get hurt. But it's not anyone's fault.

“It will not be easy without three players, and three men, as important as Tevez, Pirlo and Vidal.

“It will be a complicated season and it's hard to do better - you should win the Champions League after the Scudetto and Coppa Italia.

“However, in Italy we start as favourites, although the others have strengthened - Inter, Milan, and especially Roma, who for years have been the main competition. They have often put us in difficulty.

"We don’t have messages to send and the season is long after Shanghai. We just want to raise this Supercoppa.”

Lichtsteiner Still Upset Over
Champions League Final Defeat

http://forzaitalianfootball.com/2015/09/juventus-defender-still-upset-over-champions-league-final-defeat/?

Sep 7, 2015

Stephan Lichtsteiner has revealed he is still gutted about Juventus‘ Champions League final defeat in June.

Juventus lost to Barcelona 3-1 in Berlin and in a lengthy interview with Fifa.com. Lichtsteiner also spoke about Italy as a footballing country.

“On the day of the game I wasn’t really that nervous,” Lichtsteiner told Fifa.com in an exclusive interview.

“I was pretty relaxed and just incredibly excited about the final. I knew that in two hours it would all be over, one way or another.

“But I was pretty nervous in the week leading up to the game.

“You think about winning the title, everything revolves around that one game and you can’t wait to get out there and start playing.

“We’d had a great season, having won two titles already, and were prepared to get our hands on the big trophy.

“Both the supporters and the players were desperate to make that dream a reality.

“Juve are one of the biggest teams in Europe, but still not quite at the same level as Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich.

“Clubs like these reach the final on a regular basis.

“For me, however, it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I knew it was now or never.

“I was therefore incredibly disappointed after the match and still am today.

“In hindsight, I can be happy with everything we achieved last season as a team.

“I’m also proud of my own performance. I played every minute of our 13 Champions League matches last season.

Lichtsteiner then went onto talk about Italy as a country

“Italy is one of the nicest countries in Europe and has everything you could wish for.”

“You’ve got the ocean, the mountains, the lakes, great food and a fantastic lifestyle.

“I’m also a big fan of the mentality of the Italian people. They’re open and relaxed, perhaps more so in the south than in the north.

“They’re also extremely passionate about football, which is more of a tactical game in Italy.

“The emphasis is placed on perfection and that doesn’t always result in the sort of spectacle we’re used to seeing in other leagues.

“But you can feel how much the Italians love their football. Everyone has an opinion which they’re eager to put across.”

Lichtsteiner: ‘Juve, beware Sterling’

http://www.football-italia.net/72781/lichtsteiner-%E2%80%98juve-beware-sterling%E2%80%99?

Sep 10, 2015

Stephan Lichtsteiner says Juventus must keep close to Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling when the two sides face in the Champions League next week.

The Old Lady open their European campaign with an away trip to the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, and the Switzerland international thinks they can repeat their successful run to the final last year.

“Sterling is a great player – you can never leave him too much space because he’s so quick and good at one-on-ones,” the full-back told Tuttosport.

“It’s important to keep him as close as possible.

“As we have learned, it’s not at all easy to play in the Champions League. I think that City have a team that is well equipped to have a great season, but in football it’s not enough just to have a strong squad as it’s always difficult to win.

“Having said that, City have everything needed to do well.

“Can Juventus repeat themselves in Europe? Of course and we must believe it, but this year will certainly be more difficult because after the final last year, everyone now knows about us and is expecting us.

“How do I explain this difficult start to the season That’s football. Against Udinese we had six or seven clear scoring chances, they have had one and we were punished.”

Sep 24, 2015

Juventus have announced that Stephan Lichtsteiner is 'unlikely to be available' for Saturday’s clash with Napoli.

The Switzerland international was withdrawn at half-time against Frosinone on Wednesday with breathing difficulties.

A club statement today suggested he is unlikely to recover in time for the San Paolo meeting.

“Following his discomfort with breathing difficulties notified during the half-time break of the match against Frosinone, yesterday evening Lichtsteiner was taken to the Mauriziano hospital for tests, where he remained under observation until this morning,” read the statement on Juventus’ official website.

“The complete resolution of symptoms has enabled his discharge and his condition will be monitored over the next few days.

“The player did not train today and is unlikely to be available for the next match against Napoli.”

Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner has been discharged from hospital after being admitted with breathing difficulties, but is expected to miss the Serie A clash with Napoli.

The Switzerland international was replaced by Giorgio Chiellini at half-time of Juventus' 1-1 draw with Frosinone on Wednesday and was later taken to hospital, where he was kept in overnight.

The Italian champions confirmed on Thursday that Lichtsteiner has been released from the Mauriziano Hospital but he is likely to sit out Saturday's trip to the San Paolo.

"Stephan Lichtsteiner was last night taken to Mauriziano Hospital after reporting breathing difficulties during the interval of the Bianconeri’s Serie A encounter with Frosinone at Juventus Stadium," a club statement read.

"He was kept under observation throughout the night and discharged this morning after the symptoms subsided. His condition will be monitored over the coming days.

"The defender did not train today and it is unlikely that he will be available for this weekends trip to Napoli."

Lichtsteiner has surgery

http://www.football-italia.net/73797/lichtsteiner-has-surgery?

Oct 2, 2015

Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner has had surgery after suffering with breathing difficulties.

The Swiss international has not featured for the Bianconeri after going off during the draw with Frosinone, and will now be out for a month.

“During last week’s match with Frosinone, Stephan Lichtsteiner suffered breathing difficulties due to a benign cardiac arrhythmia (atrial flutter) which later stopped of its own accord,” a statement on the club’s website announced.

“Tests and specialist consultancy conducted over the following days suggested surgery to be the best course of action for the defender.

“Dr. Gaita today performed a cardiac ablation operation and Lichtsteiner is expected to return to competitive action within 30 days."
