Juventus-Udinese Preview:
Allegri faces injury crisis

The Serie A champions have a growing injury list with Carlos Tevez the latest casualty,
meaning Sebastian Giovinco and Fernando Llorente are the coach's only striking options.

Sep 12, 2014

Massimiliano Allegri will have to contend with a growing injury list as Juventus welcome Udinese in Serie A on Saturday.

With Arturo Vidal (thigh), Andrea Pirlo (hip), Andrea Barzagli (Achilles) and Giorgio Chiellini (calf) all unavailable, though it looks as though Carlos Tevez has survived an injury scare.

Reports in the Italian press claimed that the Argentine forward limped out of training on Wednesday with a suspected hamstring injury.

However, the former Manchester City man insisted that he is 100 per cent fit, much to the relief of the Italian champions, with Tevez having scored 19 goals last season as Juve saw off the threat of Roma to take a third consecutive Scudetto.

It would also leave Sebastian Giovinco and Fernando Llorente as Allegri's primary striking options for his first home match in charge.

Juve coach Allegri could, however, be boosted by the return of close-season signing Alvaro Morata, who has made a swift recovery from the knee surgery he had in July.

Morata joined from Real Madrid with the promise of increasing Juve's attacking threat and, though a start against Udinese is unlikely, he could play a role from the bench.

Chiellini's absence has been the subject of some controversy, with the defender having been withdrawn from international duty by his club.

Juve were forced to defend the decision to recall Chiellini amid criticism from the Italy hierarchy, who argued that he should have stayed with his country until the end of the international break.

While Allegri's tenure started with a 1-0 win over Chievo, Udinese were also victorious in Andrea Stramaccioni's first game at the helm - beating newly promoted Empoli 2-0.

Stalwart striker Antonio Di Natale scored twice in that match to defeat the club where his career began almost two decades ago.

That double added to the 36-year-old's incredible five-goal haul against Ternana in the Coppa Italia, and Udinese will need their talisman to be on top form if they are to upset the odds this weekend.

Udinese, who finished 13th last season, have not beaten Juve in the last six attempts and lost twice to them in the 2013-14 campaign.

Stramaccioni respects Juve strength

Sep 12, 2014

Andrea Stramaccioni says his win in Turin while Inter boss means nothing ahead of the Juventus-Udinese encounter.

Stramaccioni famously ended Juve’s 49-game unbeaten streak during his stint with the Nerazzurri and he’ll return to the Juventus Stadium on Saturday.

“It was a great game, unique,” said the man who replaced Francesco Guidolin on the Udine hot-seat in the summer.

“It was first against second and I remember it fondly. But that is part of the past and Juventus-Udinese must not be influenced by that memory.

“I know it will be a different game tomorrow. We know what Juventus are, we respect them, but we want to cause them problems.

“I’ve seen a lot of Juventus games in preparation for this tie. You often get the sensation that they will score in every game.

“With humility, I say that we will go there to defend, but our mentality will be to try to do them harm whenever they make a mistake.”

Juventus also changed bosses over the summer when Massimiliano Allegri stepped in for Antonio Conte. Allegri made a winning start with a 1-0 win at Chievo two weeks ago.

“Week 1 of the season showed that Juventus are still a solid side,” Stramaccioni added. “They played with a good rhythm and won at a difficult ground.

“It looks like the same old Juventus to me, with the same system that has allowed their players to win so much already.

“They played with excellent intensity despite injuries.”

Juventus won all of their League games at home last season.

Allegri: Injuries not that bad

Sep 12, 2014

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri has cooled the furore over the injury situation in Turin.

A number of the Old Lady squad have been sidelined in recent weeks, with Arturo Vidal the latest casualty.

“Too much has been made of the injuries,” Allegri stated on Friday. “You all now that there are two or three players who have had problems for a few months.

“People like Andrea Barzagli and Arturo Vidal, whereas Giorgio Chielllini was suspended and he’s now training again.

“Barzagli could be on the bench tomorrow, Alvaro Morata will return, while Andrea Pirlo is on the road to recovery. And Carlos Tevez has no injury.

“I’ll talk to Carlos. He is fine and he wants to play, but I want to evaluate any risks as we have to start the Champions League campaign well too.

“Morata is available, but he hasn’t got 90 minutes in his legs. He’s in decent shape, but we expect a lot from him. As well as having speed, he has great quality.

“I have faith in the players at my disposal. The season is long and everyone will have to make a contribution.”

Following the Week 1 win at Chievo, Allegri will be looking for maximum points when Udinese visit on Saturday.

“Udinese are a difficult side to face. They are well built and Andrea Stramaccioni has inherited a good team from Francesco Guidolin.

“It will be a special game for me as it will be my first as Juventus boss at the Juventus Stadium. We’ll need the support of the fans.”

Allegri opted to stick with the 3-5-2 formation of his predecessor Antonio Conte in Verona and he will do again – even if confirming that Patrice Evra will play.

“Let’s be clear, it is not as if Juventus belong to one Coach if they play with a four at the back and another if they field three.

“Ripping up a system that has worked makes no sense. Also, if Barzagli and Chiellini are missing then a four-man defence is no good.

“Evra was an important signing and he’ll certainly play tomorrow. He can play in a four-man defence or a five-man midfield. He just has to get used to Italian football.”

Allegri was also questioned on Juventus’ title rivals this term.

“Roma have done some excellent things on the transfer market, Milan too.

“It will be a balanced championship and harder than last term. It will be decided in the last few weeks. Napoli are to be feared as well.”

Juventus V Udinese – Team News,
Tactics, Line-Ups And Prediction

Sep 12, 2014

Juventus host Udinese in their first home game this season looking for a positive result ahead of a testing few weeks where they will meet AC Milan and AS Roma. A dominant display against Chievo yielded 3 points but Massimiliano Allegri expressed concerns over the host of missed chances in front of goal and he would be hoping that Juventus are more clinical than the first game of the season.

Udinese meanwhile have started very brightly with wins over Ternana in the Coppa Italia followed by a 2-0 win over new boys Empoli in the first game of the new Serie A season. This will be the first real test of new manager Andrea Stramaccioni as they take on the champions but the confidence of a good start should see them put up a decent challenge in the intimidating Juventus stadium.

Team news and tactical brief

JUVENTUS

Despite reports suggesting that Allegri would switch to a 4man defence against Chievo, the new head coach went for the tried and tested 3-5-2 formation with Martin Caceres, Leonardo Bonucci and Angelo Ogbonna in defence. They are expected to be retained for this game also as Andrea Barzagli has not regained full fitness although he has started training and played 45mins in a practice match against Serie D side Pro Settimo Eureka at Vinovo. Giorgio Chiellini is still serving a 3 match suspension and he is not yet fully fit. He was recalled from the national camp amidst controversy. Luca Marrone will most likely be out for 20 days after he suffered a muscle injury in his left thigh.

Paul Pogba was at his majestic best against Spain last Friday displaying his full array of skills and he will be looking to lead the line as Andrea Pirlo is still nursing an injury. Amidst reports of a fresh knee injury, Arturo Vidal played the full 90 mins against Mexico on Sunday but returned to Vinovo after that with a thigh injury. Judging by his performances against Chievo and Mexico, it is safe to say his knee is almost fine but this thigh sprain should keep him out for this game. New signing Roberto Pereyra should start in midfield against his old club alongside Claudio Marchisio who also returned early from national duty as he was suspended for the game against Norway. Kwado Asamoah and Stephan Lichtsteiner will take up their usual positions as fullbacks in the team.

Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente were both in Vinovo during the international break but Tevez suffered a muscle injury and will miss this game. They are yet to start as a pair upfront this season. Kingsley Coman will get his home debut after a wonderful performance against Chievo and Kazaksthan u21 last week. New signing Alvaro Morata played the full 90 mins in the practice match and is very close to regaining full fitness. He is also expected to start as a substitute but Juventus fans will be looking forward to seeing him on the pitch for a few minutes after his big money move from Real Madrid this summer.

Probable Starting Line-up (3-5-2): Buffon; Caceres, Bonucci, Ogbonna; Lichtsteiner, Pogba, Pereyra, Marchisio, Asamoah; Coman, Llorente

2pqlwf9.jpg

UDINESE

For the first time since 2010-11, Udinese do not have any European commitments this season. This will allow new head coach Andrea Stramaccioni to focus only on domestic competitions. Interestingly, Stramaccioni was the first manager to get three points in the Juventus stadium with his Inter Milan side in 2012. Chances of repeating that feat looks unlikely but Udinese are buoyed by a steady start to their campaign. This will be a tough test for a relatively young looking side with teenage sensation Simone Scuffet again missing out with an ankle injury. He was not picked for the first game and his injury will mean another chance in goal for Greek international Orestis Karnezis. Gabriel Silva is out with an injury so his position on the left side of the defence will be taken up by Danilo. Pasquale and Frenchman Heurtaux will partner experienced campaigner Maurizio Domizzi in the 3man backline. Silvan Widmer will take his place on the right side of the five man midfield.

Central figure in midfield will be the ever reliable Allan who will be looking to stifle the free flowing Juventus midfield. The bulk of the dirty work is expected to be done by Ghanaian Agyemang-Badu. New summer signing Panagiotis Kone will make his debut on Saturday after coming on as a sub in the last game against Empoli. Kone was one of the few players who caught the eye in Bologna and he also had a decent outing in Brazil for his national side Greece. Upfront Luis Muriel will partner the red-hot Antonio Di Natale with new signing Cyril Thereau once again expected to come on as an impact substitute.

Probable Starting Line-up (3-5-2): Karnezis; Danilo, Heurtaux, Domizzi; Kone, Pasquale, Widmer, Allan, Badu; Muriel, Di Natale

Players to Watch Out For

Paul Pogba (Juventus)

Paul Pogba is one of the biggest names in world football at this moment. His scintillating displays against Spain and Serbia just cemented the belief that this boy is destined for greatness in his career. Against Chievo, Pogba once again put on a decent shift and combined well with the frontmen. Reports suggest he is very close to a contract extension and he fully committed himself to his club in a recent interview with La Stampa. Max Allegri is expecting Pogba to take an advanced role in midfield and contribute more to the attacking play. It remains to be seen how he functions in this new role but early signs are good enough to suggest that the Frenchman can do justice to his new role.

Antonio Di Natale (Udinese)

The evergreen icon of the Zebrette, the talismanic captain has entered his 11th season for Udinese in the best possible fashion scoring 6 goals in two games including four against Ternana in the Coppa Italia. He bagged a brace last week against Empoli and he is definitely the man to watch out for in this game. Di Natale has not scored in the Juventus stadium as of yet but he will be looking to break his duck on Saturday. He is just five goals shy from the 200 mark in Italy.

Prediction

Juventus 2–0 Udinese

Allegri will be confident of picking up three points in his first official home game as Juventus manager ahead of a busy schedule in September. Apart from Di Natale, Udinese squad looks pretty average and it should be a relatively easy win for the Bianconeri.

Blast From the Past

A tight contest was settled deep into injury time by Fernando Llorente who headed in a cross(shot) from Stephan Lichtsteiner last time these two sides met in Turin.

Juventus V Udinese: Injury Hit
Bianconeri Face Former Tormentor

Sep 12, 2014

Serie A resumes after the international break and champions Juventus welcome Udinese to the Juventus Stadium on Saturday evening at 20:45.

Both sides opened their accounts with wins in the opening round of fixtures. The Bianconeri usurped Chievo 1-0 away from home and Udinese having a comfortable 2-0 victory over Empoli.

The Bianconeri will be calling on the strength of their squad with several major players out with injury. Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Andrea Barzagli all out injured with Giorgio Chiellini also missing through suspension. Fears have been allayed over the fitness of Carlos Tevez and is expected to play, while Alvaro Morata is also rumoured to be in line for some game time.

Claudio Marchisio will continue in the absence of Pirlo with Martín Cáceres replacing Barzagli and with the prospect of Roberto Pereyra making his first competitive start for Juve against his former club, replacing the injured Vidal.

The partnership of Fernando Llorente and Tevez may be reunited despite the impressive debut of young Frenchmen Kingsley Coman in the opening game against Chievo.

Udinese also suffering from injuries with highly rated young goalkeeper Simone Scuffet missing along with full-backs Gabriel Silva and Giovanni Pasquale.

Juventus did the double over their visitors from Udine last season without conceding a goal with a 1-0 in Turin then a 0-2 win in the Stadio Friuli.

Since then, both clubs have changed coaches with Massimiliano Allegri at the helm of the champions and Andrea Stramaccioni hoping to rebuild his career with Udinese. Stramaccioni inflicted the only loss to the Bianconeri in their own stadium whilst in charge at Inter, and in all their previous meetings as coaches, Allegri has never won against a side coached by Stramaccioni.

As always, ever green striker Antonio Di Natale will be key for the Zebrette and having already opened his account with two goals against Empoli will be once again in the running for the Capocannoniere.

Expected starting XIs

JUVENTUS - Buffon, Caceres, Bonucci, Ogbonna, Lichtsteiner, Pogba, Marchisio, Pereyra, Asamoah, Llorente, Tevez.

UDINESE - Karnezis, Heurtaux, Danilo, Domizzi, Widmer, Allan, Guilherme, Badu, Piris, Muriel, Di Natale.

Juventus v Udinese: Preview

Sep 12, 2014

Udinese head coach Andrea Stramaccioni expects a tough test against Juventus on Saturday despite the fact the Italian champions are missing several key players.

Juve are without the services of Arturo Vidal, Andrea Pirlo, Andrea Barzagli and Alvaro Morata, who are all out injured for the Serie A clash in Turin.

Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini is suspended and, to further complicate matters for Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri, Argentinian striker Carlos Tevez is doubtful after he sustained a muscular injury in training.

``We expect a difficult game at Juventus even if they are missing several important players,'' Stramaccioni told the giornalaccio rosa dello Sport. ``I'm sure the players that will replace them will be eager to prove their worth.''

Stramaccioni has reason to be wary considering Juve were unbeaten at home during the 2013-14 campaign and went on to claim their third straight Scudetto.

``We need to play an intelligent game,'' Stramaccioni said. ``We will need to run much more than them and make fewer mistakes than they do if we are to have a chance against them.''

Juve, under their new boss Allegri, started the campaign with a 1-0 victory at Chievo and begin their Champions League adventure at home to Malmo on Tuesday night.

``We want to start the Champions League on the right foot,'' Allegri said. ``We want to go far in this competition.

``However, we will only focus on the game against Malmo after our match against Udinese.''

Stramaccioni, who replaced Francesco Guidolin in the Friuli dugout this summer, will also be without several players.

Defenders Gabriel Silva and Giovanni Pasquale are sidelined with muscular problems while goalkeeper Simone Scuffet sustained an ankle injury while on Italy Under-19 duty this week. Orestis Karnezis will start in goal.

Antonio Di Natale, whose brace earned Udinese their 2-0 opening-day win over Empoli, will lead his team's attack against Juve.

Former Juventus And Udinese Striker
Anticipating Exciting Clash

Sep 12, 2014

Former Juventus and Udinese striker Vincenzo Iaquinta is looking forward to seeing his past employers face each other in Serie A on Saturday night.

The Bianconeri hired Massimiliano Allegri and the Zebrette recruited Andrea Stramaccioni as coaches for their respective clubs but Iaquinta said that both teams can already play good football.

“It will be a beautiful challenge between two teams who play well in spite of the arrival of two new coaches on both benches,” Iaquinta told TuttoMercatoWeb.

“I saw a great Juve capable of putting in a great test on the field against Chievo.

“It must be said that the level of module and tactics I seemed to have seen were of Antonio Conte’s team but perhaps after three years it is also normal.

“Udinese have always been a team that plays well and it will also do so with Stramaccioni.

“They started well and now comes the test at the Juventus Stadium, a stadium in which it is always difficult to play at.”

Juventus vs. Udinese: How Juve
Will Line Up in Serie a Game

Sep 12, 2014

Juventus finally host their first home game of 2014-15, the international break delaying the debut of Massimiliano Allegri in front of the Turin crowd. The new coach will line up against Udinese, pitting him against former Inter boss Andrea Stramaccioni in an important match for both sides.

After another summer of upheaval, the Friulian side will be buoyed by their 2-0 win over Empoli last week, with talismanic captain Antonio Di Natale getting both goals. For Juventus, a routine one-goal victory at Chievo handed Allegri a solid start to his reign, and he will look to build on that on Saturday.

The Bianconeri will be without several key figures, as Arturo Vidal and Andrea Barzagli sit out injured, while Giorgio Chiellini is suspended. It is likely the side will once again be deployed in a 3-5-2 formation, continuing with the framework Antonio Conte favoured with great success over the last three years.

Goalkeeper

Gianluigi Buffon will certainly start between the posts, the club captain is looking to add to his opening day clean sheet as he bids to keep Di Natale and company at bay. The 36-year-old enjoyed a quiet afternoon against Chievo, making just two saves over the 90 minutes, according to ESPN FC stats.

Defence

More than anywhere else, defence has become a concern for Allegri, with a number of players unavailable for the coach. As well as the injury suffered by Barzagli and Chiellini’s suspension, Juventus will also struggle to call upon Kwadwo Asamoah on Saturday.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Allegri told reporters the Ghanaian only returned from international duty 24 hours earlier. That means Patrice Evra will start on the left flank, per Football Italia, with Stephan Lichtsteiner opposite the Frenchman.

In the back three, the Bianconeri are expected to continue with the trio of Martin Caceres, Angelo Ogbonna and Leonardo Bonucci, just as they did against Chievo. The latter will be boosted by a fine performance for Italy, where he was among the many positives of the Azzurri win over Norway.

Midfield

Juventus will also have to face Udinese without the talented Arturo Vidal, the Chilean midfielder returning from international duty with another injury. He has suffered a strain in his right thigh, which the Bianconeri will monitor in the coming days, as per Football Italia.

Luckily for Allegri, he continues to have a raft of talented midfielders at his disposal, with Roberto Pereyra ready to deputise for Vidal alongside Paul Pogba and Claudio Marchisio. That trio should be comfortable against Udinese, the club Pereyra moved to Turin from this past summer.

Attack

Carlos Tevez was reportedly injured earlier this week, but the striker took to Twitter to deny he was hampered in anyway. “Thank you to everyone for being worried about me,” he wrote (h/t Football Italia). “I have no lesions and I am preparing for Saturday’s game.”

Despite those assurances, it is expected that Fernando Llorente will start the match against Udinese, stepping in for the Argentinean. Alongside him, the impressive Kingsley Coman—who was analysed in detail here—may be handed a second start by Allegri.

Juventus vs. Udinese Preview:
Round 2 — Restarting your engines

Sep 12, 2014

The beauty of the Serie A schedule is that after one measly game, we get to wait another two weeks to wait around for the next round of things. And by "the beauty," I mean "the completely annoying" part of how the Serie A schedule is put together. But here we are, ready for Juventus again. We've missed you, you crazy old gal.

The two-week wait is over and done with. Well, there's still a handful of hours to go before kickoff actually takes place, but the vast majority of the wait is out of the way. We can get back to watching Juventus again, friends. At least until the next international break arrives.

For now, Juventus is back in our lives. With it comes the first of what will be a busy three weeks before the next international breaks arrives and bores us all to death. The first in what will be a whirlwind 24-day period with games every 72 hours or so is tomorrow night's battle of the bianconeri between Juventus and Udinese at Juventus Stadium.

There will be games against Atlético Madrid, Roma and Milan along the way. But first, Juventus must face get past the ever-annoying Udinese side that will likely feature somebody on their roster sign on loan with an option to buy next summer. (Hey, don't blame me, it's just the history Beppe Marotta has setup for himself.)

JuventusFC ✔ @juventusfcen
#Allegri: "Tomorrow will be my first game at #JStadium. It will be a special night and we'll try to put in a good performance." #JuveUdinese

Mad Max's first game as Juventus manager at Juventus Stadium. Juventus' first game at Juventus Stadium this season. A night of firsts. So how about three points on the first game out of the international break? Yeah, I like that idea.

GOOD NEWS

International break ... over. Serie A ... back. Life ... good.

BAD NEWS

Injuries, injuries, and more injuries. It seems like everything Juventus-related the past few days has been involving important players getting injured.

There's Arturo Vidal. Same goes for Andrea Barzagli (who is back training but isn't expected to start). Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Pirlo, and Luca Marrone, too. It's been a busy time in the Juventus training room lately — and it's not because players are getting routine treatment before and after practice.

JuventusFC ✔ @juventusfcen
#Allegri: "Barzagli could be on the bench tomorrow. Tevez felt discomfort after striking a ball on the volley, but is OK now." #JuveUdinese

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

1. Can the Juventus that went into the international break be the same one that comes out of it?

It was always interesting to see how Juventus under Antonio Conte dealt with everything that comes with international breaks. Sometimes they picked up right where they left off a few weeks prior, other times they looked like a bunch of players who didn't have much of a break at all due to their respective national team obligations. It was pretty easy to figure out that Juve played well in their season opener two weeks ago against Chievo. What's not so easy to figure out is how Juventus, with all of their players traveling during the international break, will do after such a long break after the first game of the season.

2. Who takes the place of Arturo Vidal?

With one man absent from the starting lineup for the immediate future, another must replace him. Simple science, really. Who that man that steps into the starting lineup for Vidal is still a guessing game at this point. Allegri mentioned Roberto Pereyra possibly featuring at his pre-match press conference, so the versatile Argentinian could be in line to make his first career Juventus start against his former team. Another summer signing, Romulo, is probably an option as well. Neither one will bring the same kind of traits Vidal will, obviously, but they're both more than capable of filling in. And if this summer's transfer market was all about adding depth, now is the time to see it with all the injuries going on at once.

3. The health and effectiveness of Carlos Tévez.

One day we think Carlitos is in doubt for this weekend and Tuesday night's Champions League opener, the next we breathe a sigh of relief when we here Tévez say he's good to go for Udinese. Who woulda thought that one simple Twitter post would see just about every Juventini's worries fly right out the window. The obvious question is now this: How will Tévez play? Being the absolute bulldog Tévez is, he's going to bust his ass no matter how healthy he truly is. He's done it before last season, and he's obviously going to do it again. Tévez says he's good to go, Allegri says Tévez is good to go, so I guess there's no reason to doubt now that Tévez is good to go.

4. How Patrice Evra does in his Juventus debut.

Max Allegri didn't wait around until the starting lineups were announced to say who his starting left (wing)back was going to be tomorrow night. "Evra will play," was a definitive answer from Juve's first-year manager. Seeing as everybody is expecting Juve to roll out a three-man backline and Allegri basically confirmed it Friday, I'll just go ahead and assume Evra's first official playing time as a Juventus player will come as a left wingback. It's the first chance for the 33-year-old Frenchman to silence those who thought his signing wasn't all that productive. Let's just hope the man we talk about next doesn't give him fits all game...

JuventusFC ✔ @juventusfcen
#Allegri: "Evra's career speaks for itself, he's capable of playing either in a back four or on the left-hand side in a midfield five."

5. Can Juventus keep Antonio Di Natale (relatively) quiet?

I love Toto. No, not the band, the footballer. The only time I don't love watching Antonio Di Natale play is when it's against Juventus because he has the ability to be such a damn pest. How did he mark his first game of the 2014-15 campaign? With a goal, and then another. So much for all that talk of him retiring and then coming back and all that jazz. The guy may be a month away from his 37th birthday, but he's still got plenty of gas left in the tank. And you have to believe that trying to keep Di Natale at bay is one of the things Allegri is focusing on entering tomorrow night's showdown.

JuventusFC ✔ @juventusfcen
#Allegri: "Udinese are a difficult side to play. Di Natale is always a threat for them." #JuveUdinese

Juventus reshuffle against Antonio Di Natale’s Udinese, but Carlos Tevez is risked from the start despite an injury.

It kicks off tonight at 20.45 CET.

Max Allegri gets his Turin debut on the Bianconeri bench, having won 1-0 away to Chievo in his season opener.

There are several injury concerns to deal with, as Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Luca Marrone are out of action with Giorgio Chiellini still suspended.

Tevez suffered a muscular problem in training this week, but is still risked so close to the Champions League match against Malmo, partnering Fernando Llorente.

Alvaro Morata and Andrea Barzagli are on the bench following long lay-offs, but Roberto Pereyra starts against his former club and Patrice Evra gets his Serie A debut.

Udinese also began the season with a victory, seeing off Empoli 2-0, and Di Natale leads the way with Luis Muriel.

Gabriel Silva, Maurizio Domizzi and goalkeeper Simone Scuffet are unavailable.

It’s a special game for Coach Andrea Stramaccioni, whose Inter became the first ever opponents to conquer the Juventus Stadium.

Juventus: Buffon; Caceres, Bonucci, Ogbonna; Lichtsteiner, Pereyra, Marchisio, Pogba, Evra; Tevez, Llorente

Juventus bench: Storari, Rubinho, Romulo, Barzagli, Padoin, Pepe, Asamoah, Mattiello, Coman, Morata, Giovinco

Udinese: Karnezis; Heurtaux, Danilo, Bubnjic; Widmer, Allan, Guilherme, Kone, Pasquale; Muriel, Di Natale

HT 1-0: Tevez puts Juve in front

Sep 13, 2014

Carlos Tevez shook off injury to score as Juventus lead Udinese 1-0 at half-time.

Max Allegri had his first game in Turin as Juve boss against Andrea Stramaccioni, who as Coach of Inter was the first opponent ever to win at the Juventus Stadium. Carlos Tevez started despite a muscular problem, while Patrice Evra got his Serie A debut and Roberto Pereyra faced his former teammates. The Friulani missed Gabriel Silva, Maurizio Domizzi and Simone Scuffet, but Panagiotis Kone was given a surprise start.

Juve started strong and broke through after just eight minutes when Stephan Lichtsteiner pulled back from the by-line for Tevez to side-foot home from 12 yards. It was his 20th Serie A goal in just 36 games.

A Juve free kick training ground exercise went very wrong when the referee accidentally got in the way, sparking a dangerous Luis Muriel counter-attack.

Silvan Widmer also had an effort charged down and Pereyra blasted over from a Fernando Llorente assist, while Angelo Ogbonna got just enough of a touch to a Muriel cross to prevent Antonio Di Natale’s free header.

Tevez fired over and Lichtsteiner scuffed his finish following a give-and-go with Llorente, while Paul Pogba tried to place his shot rather than blast it, allowing Orestis Karnezis to recover. The French midfielder did put his boot through the laces soon after, but this time it was too central.

Llorente got on the end of a Pereyra assist at the back post, but it bounced awkwardly and he couldn’t control it.

Juventus 1-0 Udinese (Half-Time)

Scorers: Tevez 8 (J)

Juventus 2-0 Udinese: Tevez and
Marchisio seal comfortable win

Massimiliano Allegri marked his first home league match in charge
with victory to continue their 100% start to the new campaign.

Sep 13, 2014

A Carlos Tevez-inspired Juventus made it two wins out of two in Serie A as they ran out 2-0 winners over Udinese in Turin on Saturday night.

After a runaway title win in 2013-14, Juve are strongly fancied to make it four Scudetti in a row at the end of the campaign, and Saturday's result at Juventus Stadium means the Massimiliano Allegri era has begun in positive fashion.

In his first competitive home match in charge, Allegri had to contend with the absences of key men Andrea Pirlo, Giorgio Chiellini and Arturo Vidal, but the home side had little trouble in overcoming an Udinese side that lacked any potency, even with the prolific Antonio Di Natale in attack.

The veteran came into the clash having scored seven goals in two matches this season, but the 36-year-old had little effect on the affair as an early strike from Tevez was added to by Marchisio's effort from distance 15 minutes from time.

Juventus had chances to add to their margin of victory, while the closest the visitors came to a goal saw Igor Bubnjic's close-range effort ruled out for offside midway through the second half.

The result means Juve have now won all of the past six meetings between the two sides, and the defending champions extended their winning sequence at home in the league to 20 games in the process.

Allegri made three changes from the side that defeated Chievo 1-0 on the opening weekend.

Fernando Llorente was selected to partner Tevez in attack, while there was a competitive Juve debut for Patrice Evra and on-loan midfielder Roberto Pereyra made his first start, against his parent club.

The hosts were ahead in the eighth minute when Tevez swept home Stephan Lichtsteiner's cut-back from the byline after the Switzerland international had combined well with Pereyra down the right-hand side.

Pereyra wasted a chance to net against his former employees in the 29th minute, firing over the crossbar from just inside the area after being teed up by Llorente.

Tevez blasted over four minutes later as Juve continued to dominate, while Lichtsteiner and Paul Pogba both spurned presentable opportunities with weak efforts as the half drew to a close.

Pogba tested goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis with a curling free-kick four minutes after the interval, and Martin Caceres was just unable to connect with Tevez's inviting free-kick at the back post.

Bubnjic thought he had levelled in the 67th minute when he tapped home from six yards, but the referee's assistant raised his flag with replays showing the Croat to have strayed marginally beyond the last defender.

Tevez brought another save out of Karnezis four minutes later as Juve went in search of a second, which duly arrived when Marchisio thumped a low shot into the bottom right-hand corner from 20 yards.

A further boost for Allegri came late on as close-season arrival from Real Madrid, Alvaro Morata, emerged as an 89th-minute substitute for his debut having recovered from a knee injury, the Spaniard forcing a good save out of Karnezis in his brief cameo.

After the restart Pogba’s free kick was palmed away, but Udinese finally came out of their shell on the hour mark.

First a corner bounced off Llorente just wide of Gigi Buffon’s upright, then Igor Bubnjic was flagged marginally offside when he redirected a Danilo cross-shot into the net. Replays show it was an extremely tight decision.

Tevez forced Karnezis into a save at the near post and Apache set up Juve’s second goal just as they were starting to come under pressure. He rolled across for Claudio Marchisio’s screamer from outside the box that beat Karnezis at the near bottom corner.

There was even time for Alvaro Morata to get his Serie A debut, having suffered an injury in his first Juventus training session. He almost scored, spinning in the box to force Karnezis into a tough one-handed save.

Juventus: Buffon; Caceres, Bonucci, Ogbonna; Lichtsteiner, Pereyra (Padoin 85), Marchisio, Pogba, Evra; Tevez (Coman 81), Llorente (Morata 89)

Carlos Tevez and Claudio Marchisio
give Juventus win over Udinese

2nlfnm1.jpg

Sep 13, 2014

Juventus joined Roma at the top of Serie A with two wins out of two this season after beating Udinese 2-0 at the Juventus Stadium.

Carlos Tevez and Claudio Marchisio supplied the goals for Massimiliano Allegri's side, who struggled more than necessary after failing to make their pressure count in the first half.

After running a few risks, though, they picked up the win they were looking for to warm them up for Tuesday's Champions League opener against Malmo in Turin.

Juve - who won every single one of their 19 Serie A games at the Juventus Stadium last season - were quick to assert their authority, pegging their opponents back in their own half in their customary style.

They needed only eight minutes to break the deadlock with Tevez opening his account for the season, just days before he will bid to end a four-year drought in the Champions League.

The Argentinian, who was an injury doubt right up to kick-off, was lurking in just the right place at the right time as Stephan Lichtsteiner's attempt to pull the ball across deflected back to him eight yards out and he provided a neat low finish.

The Bianconeri, still camped in their opponents' half, struggled to translate their superiority into further goals, with Udinese managing to remain just one goal behind going into the break.

Luis Muriel was withdrawn and Bruno Fernandes came on, and Andrea Stramaccioni's tactical change led to a transformation in his side, and the game.

Stramaccioni was the first visiting coach to win at the Juventus Stadium, succeeding with Inter Milan two seasons ago, and some Juve fans may have had that 3-1 defeat in their minds as the Zebrette started to make some inroads in the second half.

Juve's defence was beginning to wobble when Igor Bubnjic lifted Danilo's shot into the roof of Gianluigi Buffon's goal from a yard out, but the offside flag came to Juve's rescue.

It was enough of a warning for Juve, who responded with Marchisio powering in a low shot from just outside the penalty area to give them a cushion that made the final 15 minutes that bit more relaxing for Allegri.

Juventus 2-0 Udinese: Bianconeri Secure
Comfortable Win Over Zebrette

2d9zj3r.jpg

Sep 13, 2014

Juventus maintained their 100 percent start to the Serie A season with a convincing 2-0 victory over Udinese at the Juventus Stadium

Single goals in each half gave the home side the win. Carlos Tevez opened the scoring in the eighth minute, before Claudio Marchisio ensured the win late in the second half.

The home side immediately looked to dominate, forcing their opponents to defend in numbers. Their strong start was rewarded when Stephan Lichtsteiner broke down the right wing and fired in a cross for Carlos Tevez to expertly strike home in the ninth minute. The Argentine placed the ball into the bottom far corner, beyond the reach of Orestis Karnezis in the Udinese goal .

The Bianconeri then had a claim for a penalty when Patrice Evra was brought down in the box by Panagiotis Kone.

The Old Lady continued to dominate after the goal, Paul Pogba in particular standing out

Udinese had a rare chance on the counter in the 26th minute but the final ball was played behind the onrushing Luis Muriel.

Martin Caceres made a crucial headed clearance in the 29th minute, denying Antonio Di Natale a clear attempt on goal. The Zebrette began to enjoy more possession after the half hour mark but their midfield lacked any guile or creativity.

Lichtsteiner prodded a shot tamely wide in the 37th minute following some neat interchanges on the edge of the Udinese penalty area.

Karnezis saved from Pogba in the 40th minute after he failed to connect properly with a low shot. The Frenchman contuned to be a threat and he went close again in the 44th minute, skipping past a challenge and striking from distance.

The second half began in much the same way as the first with the home side attacking from the outset.

Evra made one of his trademark attacking runs down the left wing in the 64th minute, firing his cross just behind Fernando Llorente.

There was drama in the 66th minute when the away side thought they had equalized but defender Igor Bubnjic was judged to be offside when he prodded the ball in the net from three yards out. Replays show the call was extremely tight.

Soon after Llorente rolled his defender expertly but sliced his shot horribly wide. The Old Lady did eventually double their advantage in the 75th minute when Claudio Marchisio finished a neat move involving Patrice Evra and Carlos Tevez. The former Manchester City man rolled the ball for Marchisio to rifle home from outside the box.

After the second goal the game petered out with the home side looking to conserve their energy and Udinese lacking any real quality.

Subsitute Alvaro Morata had the chance to add a third in the 93rd minute but his turn and low shot was well saved by Karnezis.

Juventus vs. Udinese: Winners
and Losers from Serie A Clash

11tsnis.jpg

Sep 13, 2014

After last week’s 1-0 win over Chievo—reviewed here—Juventus have been forced to wait for their next Serie A match. While the international break saw many of the club’s stars fly off to represent their respective countries, it also denied Massimiliano Allegri the chance to immediately build upon that positive start.

If an opening day victory was vital for the new coach, it was perhaps even more imperative that he continued that against Udinese on Saturday. The Friulian side were the first to visit Turin this season, and taking three points from his debut home game was crucial to Allegri winning over the Bianconeri supporters.

Antonio Conte boasted an incredible record at Juventus Stadium, including victories in all 19 league fixtures there in 2014-15. Thanks to a 2–0 win here, his successor has certainly begun on the right path as he attempts to fill the void left by the former captain.

Winner: Carlos Tevez (Juventus)

This week, Carlos Tevez had to deny reports he was injured, taking to Twitter (h/t Football Italia) to insist he was fine and “preparing for Saturday’s game.” Putting the idle chatter behind him quickly, the Argentinian opened the scoring against Udinese after just eight minutes.

Side-footing home a comfortable finish from around 12 yards, the striker netted his 20th goal for the Bianconeri in just 36 Serie A appearances. He played well throughout the match, adding an assist as he teed up Claudio Marchisio for Juve's important second goal.

Winner: Antonio Di Natale (Udinese)

Perhaps the greatest Serie A striker of the past few years, Antonio Di Natale continued his fine form against the reigning champions. The 36-year-old netted twice in Udinese’s opening match against Empoli, and impressed here despite failing to add to that tally.

A constant threat to the Juventus backline, the Zebrette captain provided a series of chances for his team-mates, and will be frustrated at their failure to capitalise upon them.

Even without getting his name on the score sheet, Di Natale proved with his all-round play that he remains a prominent force.

Winner: Claudio Marchisio (Juventus)

Claudio Marchisio has arguably became the odd-man-out at Juventus, with the emergence of Paul Pogba seeing the 21-year-old joining Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo as the first-choice midfield for the Bianconeri.

However, with the latter pair of the trio absent through injury on Saturday, he would once again step in just when the Old Lady needed him most. With Udinese threatening to establish a foothold in the second half, Marchisio netted a crucial second goal for the home side.

Winner: Martin Caceres (Juventus)

With Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini missing once again, Martin Caceres continued on the right of the Juventus back three. He has been in excellent form throughout 2014, and showed that with yet another impressive display.

According to stats site WhoScored.com, the Uruguayan made three interceptions, four clearances and completed 92 percent of his pass attempts.

Loser: Sebastian Giovinco (Juventus)

After Juventus sold Mirko Vucinic and Fabio Quagliarella this past summer, it seemed Sebastian Giovinco would rise up the pecking order in Turin. However, the impressive early form of Kingsley Coman and the arrival of Alvaro Morata appears to have seen him remain on the outside looking in.

Those two new signings took to the field tonight, replacing Tevez and Fernando Llorente respectively, whilst Giovinco remained an unused substitute for the second game in a row. His lack of playing time has led to speculation about his future, with TuttoSport (h/t Football Italia) linking him to Arsenal this weekend.

Player Ratings

14lmrdx.jpg

Sep 13, 2014

JUVENTUS

1 G. Buffon
Easy night for him with barely a save to make.

4 M. Cáceres
Involved in attack early on, but settled into a solid defensive role for the rest of the game.

19 L. Bonucci
Showed great awareness to chase down Di Natale on more than one occasion and prevent the striker from getting a glimpse on goal.

5 A. Ogbonna
Solid at the back, proving more than equal to Udinese's sporadic forays into his territory.

26 S. Lichtsteiner
Consistently motored up and down the right hand side, setting up the opener for Tevez in the process.

6 P. Pogba
He ghosted past players with ease and was generally a menace whenever he was on the ball.

8 C. Marchisio
Saw a lot of the ball and was a good distributor in the middle of the park. A solid game.

37 R. Pereyra
He wasn't accurate with his shooting, but his passing was accurate and occasionally threatening.

33 P. Evra
Was not quite as attacking as his position suggested, but he still contributed to the build-up more than once.

10 Carlos Tévez
Got things started with an early finish, before setting up Marchisio for the second. A great night's work.

14 F. Llorente
His hold up play was absolutely remarkable. It was like watching men against boys as the Udinese defence struggled to shake him off the ball.

UDINESE

31 O. Karnezis
Could not help either goal and was assured with his handling otherwise.

75 T. Heurtaux
Offered nothing in attack and was suspect defending against players cutting infield from his flank.

5 Danilo
Struggled to overpower the might of Llorente. Not his best outing in a Zebrette shirt.

18 I. Bubnjić
Tapped in from close range, only to see the flag correctly raised for offside. Not the most confident defensive display.

27 S. Widmer
Surprisingly found himself in attacking positions more than once, but he failed to make anything happen.

6 Allan
As ever, he kept the midfield together with a determined defensive showing, stepping in to put out numerous fires.

19 Guilherme
Worked hard, but was too reactive towards the patterns of play at times.

33 P. Kone
Committed some careless fouls and was generally a step behind play.

26 G. Pasquale
He was beaten all ends up by Lichtsteiner more than once.

10 A. Di Natale
Isolated and frustrated for most of the game. Forced to live off scraps and punts.

24 L. Muriel
Saw almost none of the ball in the first half and eventually departed at the break.

Substitutes

8 Bruno Fernandes

Added more poise and ball control to the midfield.

66 G. Pinzi
Smashed a shot wide, but offered little else.

Allegri: 'Special night in Turin'

2llhq2o.jpg

Sep 13, 2014

Max Allegri had a “special night” at the Juventus Stadium in their 2-0 victory over Udinese.

The Bianconeri are joint top of the table after beating Chievo 1-0 and this evening Udinese 2-0 in Turin.

The last time this Coach started a season with a 100 per cent record after two rounds was with Sassuolo in 2007-08.

“I am absolutely not surprised we’ve started the season so well,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

“This squad has physical and technical qualities which mean we can do a lot better. We must improve on how to control the tempo, as we cannot always go at 100mph or at 10mph. Playing every three days we have to learn more control to avoid wasting energy.”

Carlos Tevez broke the deadlock after eight minutes and Claudio Marchisio finished Udinese off, but only after Igor Bubnjic had a goal disallowed for a marginal offside call.

“The team started very well and we knew Udinese would become more dangerous on the counter as time wore on, so had to break the deadlock early.

“The lads defended well and once we took the lead we were at times patient, at others a bit too hasty. I wanted more than one goal and we suffered in the second half, unable to get the measure of Udinese after their tactical switch, but in the end it was a good performance.”

This was Allegri’s debut as a home tactician in the Juventus Stadium.

“It was a special night for me as Juventus Coach in this wonderful stadium. I was curious to see how the night would go, above all that we’d be able to win!

“The crowd is an added weapon for the team and they stepped up when there were moments of difficulty.

“We had this 10-minute spell when Udinese had us under pressure and we’ve got to emerge from those situations better. We also gave the ball away in avoidable ways.

“I am very happy tonight as when the strikers work this hard to help the midfield and defence win back the ball, it is better for the whole team.

“Alvaro Morata came on and showed he has great technique. It’s important that we have young players who represent the future of this side.”

Roberto Pereyra also impressed against his former teammates and showed his versatility.

“He did better than I expected in a trequartista position tonight. At Udinese last season he’d often throw himself into space, but for the way Juventus play he’s better on the inside of midfield.”

Strama: 'Udinese better in second half'

10e1m9v.jpg

Sep 13, 2014

Andrea Stramaccioni admits Juventus dominated the first half, but felt Udinese “were the better team” after the break.

Carlos Tevez broke the deadlock after just eight minutes, but Claudio Marchisio only netted a second late on after Igor Bubnjic’s effort was ruled marginally offside.

“We had intended to contain the opening push from Juventus, as that is their characteristic above all on home turf,” Strama told Sky Sport Italia after the 2-0 defeat.

“Instead, Juve did well to make the most of our error to score and then we lost our way. Juventus played a great first half and probably deserved to be leading more than 1-0. They always start strong and in the opening 20 minutes are almost unstoppable.

“It was a different Udinese after the break, I introduced another midfielder to hold the ball better and we put together a series of corners. In my view we were actually the better team in the second half.”

Stramaccioni had changed their tactics at half-time, replacing Luis Muriel with Bruno Fernandes.

“I preferred to put Fernandes and Kone behind Di Natale, giving us superiority in midfield and helping us to create more scoring opportunities.

“It’s just a pity about the goal disallowed for centimetres. We had pushed and gone close to an equaliser before Marchisio’s goal.

“The only way to counter Juve’s strength is to take the initiative and dominance away from them, as they suffer when they don’t have the ball.”

Evra: 'Incredible Serie A debut'

2ymevqf.jpg

Sep 13, 2014

Patrice Evra thanked Juventus for his “incredible” Serie A debut and outlined the differences with the Premier League.

The former Manchester United man played in tonight’s 2-0 victory over Udinese at the Juventus Stadium in Turin.

“It is incredible,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “Pogba told me about the stadium, I’d never played here and the fans were amazing.

“I have to thank everyone, from the fans to players and staff, and will try to repay them with my performances.”

Evra revealed he is finding it a big shift from the Premier League to Serie A.

“I have never worked so hard in training in all my life! The difference is the game is less intense, but more tactical, so you have to stay concentrated at all times and cannot be distracted for a moment.”

With two Serie A victories under their belts, Juve now go into the Champions League against Malmo.

“In the Champions League the objective is to do better than last season. Juve have good players and we’ll try to achieve something great.”

Allegri: This Juventus Side Must Still Improve

2d0jb47.jpg

Sep 13, 2014

New Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri appeared happy with his side’s 2-0 home win over Udinese, but was under no illusions that his squad has still some way to go to becoming a real force.

Carlos Tevez gave the hosts an early lead before Claudio Marchisio doubled the advantage late in the game.

Allegri spoke to Sky sport Italia after the game at the Juventus stadium and said, “I’m not surprised about how well we played but technically this team still must improve.

“We need to learn when to slow down as we can’t play at 100mph for the whole match.”

He also had words of praise for his four strikers, who all played a part in the victory.

“Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente played superbly and worked incredibly hard. It was good to be able to bring on two strikers, young and talented, like Kingsley Coman and Alvaro Morata, who almost scored on his debut.”

The former AC Milan tactician is in his debut season with the Bianconeri, having replaced Antonio Conte who left Juventus to coach the Italian national team.

Tevez, Marchisio score as Juventus
beat Udinese 2-0 in home opener

2qvxrhf.jpg

Sep 14, 2014

If you were expecting change with Max Allegri then you're not going to like reading today's match report. If you wanted Juventus to remain the same despite Antonio Conte's departure, then you will enjoy reading this narrative.

Honestly though, if you didn't look at the bench you would have sworn this was last year's team, with some changes though. Roberto Pereyra is a definite upgrade in the middle of the field over last year's midfield sub Simone Padoin (sacrilege! I know!). As much as some fans would like to blame Allegri for Juve's strange season-opening injury bug, Juve have been lucky to start the season with a soft schedule which has allowed the team to break in some new faces.

MATCH SUMMARY

Juventus marked their first home game of the 2014-15 season with a pretty commanding performance. At times it looked like they were coasting a little bit. especially in the second half, but for the most part this was a blemish-free victory. They were a 100% at home last season, and they maintained that streak today too, with minor hiccups on the way.

The first half consisted of Juve penning Udinese back in their first half, and the customary early goal too. This time it was Carlos Tevez, who was a game-time decision due to injury, benefiting from a pull-back by Stephan Lichtsteiner which was deflected into his path. Tevez did well to keep his shot low, and it flew past Orestis Karnezis in the Udine goal in the 8th minute.

The away side were lucky to go into halftime just the one goal down as Juve swarmed all over them, clocking ten shots in the first period alone. At that point the absence of Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal through injury was barely felt, while wily veteran Antonio Di Natale was a non-factor. Pereyra shot way over when set up by Fernando Llorente. Tevez shot over soon after, and both Paul Pogba and Lichtsteiner could have done better with further opportunities before the break.

Udinese manager Andrea Stramaccione was the first away coach to pull out a win at Juventus Stadium when with Inter Milan, and dug some tricks out of the bag to start off the second half. He pulled off forward Luis Muriel and brought on Bruno Fernandes to quell the tidal wave of Juventus possession in midfield, and the move immediately paid dividends as suddenly Udinese looked like they belonged.

A couple of times Udinese threatened to tie the game as Juve looked a little wobbly at the hour mark, and then Igor Bubjnic got behind the defence to slot past an otherwise idle Gianluigi Buffon. However the Croat was pulled back by the assistant referee's flag as he looked to have strayed just offside.

After the scare though, Juventus bounced right back and Claudio Marchisio took advantage of a gap in the backline to hammer home a second and seal the game. Marchisio has been pulling the strings in the absence of Pirlo, and while there is no replacing the master, Il Principino was a pretty competent replacement completing 92% of his passes for the day.

Udinese played like a beaten side for the last quarter of an hour, and gave Allegri the chance to roll out subs Kingsley Coman and Alavaro Morata, both making their Serie A home debuts. Indeed Morata almost scored in the limited time he was on the pitch, which is remarkable as he was widely expected to be out until October.

LE PAGELLE

Buffon: 7
- It's only a seven, but it's through no fault of his. He really had little to do all day.

Caceres: 8 - The Uruguayan had an excellent game out on the right, made three interceptions and was generally solid all around.

Bonucci: 7 - Kept close tabs on Di Natale all game.

Ogbonna: 7.5 - Haters gonna hate, but that's two games with him in the backline, and two clean sheets. One interception, eight clearances and two shots blocked - his best game for Juve so far?

Lichtsteiner: 7.5 - Never any doubts about him, like clockwork he motors up and down the wing, all game.

Pereyra: 7 - Wayward in front of goal, his movement and passing were decent.

Marchisio: 8.5 - Excellent with or without the ball, took full advantage of his opportunity to start.

Pogba: 7.5 - Always a threat to score when he had the ball, had the Udinese midfield chasing him all afternoon.

Evra: 6.5 - Played more of a supportive role in midfield, was not really needed to add firepower up front.

Tevez: 8 - Injury? What injury? He was his harrying best chasing everything down, being a menace in attack.

Llorente: 7.5 - Udinese had no answer for his hold-up play, allowed Juventus to gain a foothold deep in their territory.

Subs:

Coman: N/A

Padoin: N/A

Morata: N/A

Coach:

Allegri: 7
- If you were hoping to see something different about how Allegri will approach the Champions League, you wouldn't have seen it today. In his defence, why rock the Serie A boat when it's still sailing merrily along. Now if he can get Tevez to break his CL drought, we'll be even more appreciative of Allegri

Allegri: Juventus need to learn control

The new head coach is not surprised by their winning start
to the season but feels they must be more careful with their tempo.

2005g8w.jpg

Sep 14, 2014

Massimiliano Allegri believes his Juventus side need to show more control in their play after they saw off Udinese 2-0 on Saturday.

After being kicked out of AC Milan midway through the previous campaign following a run of poor results, Allegri was appointed as Juve boss in July after Antonio Conte's shock resignation.

Allegri began his reign - and Juve's title defence - with a 1-0 win at Chievo on the opening weekend of Serie A and he watched on at the Juventus Stadium this weekend as goals from Carlos Tevez and Claudio Marchisio sealed a routine victory.

While he admits he is not surprised to see his side's winning start to the season, Allegri maintains his players must be more consistent when it comes to the tempo of their play.

"It was a special night for me as Juventus coach in this wonderful stadium," he told Sky Sport. "I was curious to see how the night would go, above all that we'd be able to win!

"The crowd's an added weapon for the team and they stepped up when there were moments of difficulty.

"We had this 10-minute spell when Udinese had us under pressure and we've got to emerge from those situations better. We also gave the ball away in avoidable ways.

"The team started very well and we knew Udinese would become more dangerous on the counterattack as time wore on, so we had to break the deadlock early.

"The lads defended well and, once we took the lead, we were at times patient and at others a bit too hasty. I wanted more than one goal and we suffered in the second half, unable to get the measure of Udinese after their tactical switch, but in the end it was a good performance.

"I am absolutely not surprised we've started the season so well. This squad has physical and technical qualities which mean we can do a lot better.

"We must improve on how to control the tempo, as we cannot always go at 100 miles per hour or at 10 miles per hour. Playing every three days we have to learn more control to avoid wasting energy."

Juventus kick off their Champions League campaign on Tuesday against Champions League rookies Malmo.
