Pjanic and Zaza in Juventus squad

Miralem Pjanic is in the Juventus squad to face Fiorentina tomorrow night, but remains an injury doubt.

It kicks off in Turin at 20.45 - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Pjanic limped off during a friendly against the youth team this week and was seen applying ice to the top of his thigh.

The former Roma midfielder is in the side, though could well be rested.

Coach Max Allegri confirmed that Hernanes or Mario Lemina will start if Pjanic is not risked.

Simone Zaza is back in the squad after his transfer to Wolfsburg collapsed.

Juventus squad for Fiorentina: Buffon, Chiellini, Benatia, Pjanic, Khedira, Zaza, Higuain, Hernanes, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Mandzukic, Lemina, Bonucci, Pjaca, Dybala, Asamoah, Dani Alves, Rugani, Neto, Lichtsteiner, Audero, Evra, Marrone

Match preview

http://www.football-italia.net/SerieA/match/preview/87831

Aug 20, 2016

A marquee fixture on Serie A’s opening weekend and a bitter rivalry, but Fiorentina have often struggled against Juventus.

There have been just two wins against their biggest rival in Serie A, home and away, since 1999. It’s a disappointing return given they have had some competitive teams in that period.

Opening day presents possibly their biggest opportunity to nail Juventus in a long time. Max Allegri’s teams aren’t the best starters, and as such his opening game record in Serie A is patchy at best – he’s lost half and won only twice in eight attempts.

If Fiorentina are going to beat them, they’ll probably have to do it without Borja Valero, or at least, a fully fit Borja Valero, after he sprained his ankle in a Valencia friendly on Saturday. His loss is not insignificant – he was Fiorentina’s leading chance creator by a massive margin in 2015-16, and second only to Marek Hamsik in the entire league.

But Cristian Tello’s loan confirmation this week will be a boost. He helped transform Fiorentina’s right flank last year when he arrived in January, following Jakub Blaszczykowski’s injury in November. Federico Bernardeschi is a fine player, but he’s not as direct as Kuba, and for all the skills he brought to the wing-back position, there were times when Paulo Sousa’s side missed the directness. That returned upon Tello’s arrival, and they will need it this season given Blaszczykowski is now at Wolfsburg.

Juventus have an addition of their own in the wide areas, in the shape of Marko Pjaca, although he is unlikely to start so soon into his Serie A career. Their main focus will be getting Gonzalo Higuain into condition, as he looked like he was carrying some weight on his return to action versus West Ham in a pre-season friendly.

Because of that, it’s very likely Mario Mandzukic will get the nod alongside Paulo Dybala, leaving Pipita on the bench to begin with. Miralem Pjanic suffered a slight knock during Wednesday’s in-house friendly, but should be cleared to start.

For all of their activity in the transfer market, expect Allegri to go with what’s familiar. Eight of the starting XI are likely to be players that were at the club last season. And it would have been nine had Claudio Marchisio been fit. Juventus got away with a poor start last season, thanks largely to a ridiculous run of games that saw them drop only five points from November onwards. It’s difficult to see them repeating that this time around.

Keep an eye on: Paulo Dybala (Juventus) – An obvious choice given how spectacularly he performed once he broke into the team. Has had an entire summer to rest, unlike a lot of players, and so should be fresh to take on the mantle of Juve’s Number 10 role, even without the digit itself.

Form guide: Juventus (- - - - -) Fiorentina (- - - - -)

Last season: Juventus 3-1 Fiorentina

Stat fact: As well as a dismal win/loss record, it’s been 35 years since Fiorentina went to Juventus and kept a clean sheet.

Top tip: Allegri’s opening day record is a concern, but not so that they’re likely to lose. A score draw is worth your time.

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Dani Alves, Khedira, Pjanic, Lemina, Alex Sandro; Dybala, Mandzukic

Suspended: None

Fiorentina (probable): Tatarusanu; Tomovic, Rodriguez, Astori; Bernardeschi, Badelj, Vecino, Alonso; Zarate, Kalinic, Ilicic

Suspended: None

Juventus have Miralem Pjanic and Gonzalo Higuain on the bench, while Fiorentina pick the 18-year-old son of Enrico Chiesa.

The Bianconeri begin the season aiming for a record sixth consecutive Serie A title, something no club has ever achieved before.

Max Allegri has lost Paul Pogba, but arguably has a much stronger squad than last year thanks to the arrival of Pjanic, Higuain, Marko Pjaca and Medhi Benatia.

Pjanic is not 100 per cent fit after a knock in Wednesday’s friendly, so Mario Lemina is chosen in his place, as Claudio Marchisio is still a long-term absentee.

Higuain is also on the bench, as he arrived for pre-season training visibly overweight, so Paulo Dybala is partnered by Mario Mandzukic.

Alex Sandro and Dani Alves take the wings of a 3-5-2 formation.

Fiorentina had a complicated campaign and lost their last five summer friendlies, the most recent of which saw Borja Valero stretchered off in tears.

Because of that sprained ankle, the Spaniard is not even on the bench tonight.

Josip Ilicic gets the nod rather than Giuseppe Rossi behind striker Nikola Kalinic, but the big shock is 18-year-old Federico Chiesa – the son of legendary hitman Enrico Chiesa – getting his Serie A debut.

Also on the bench is the teenage son of Romania hero Gheorghe Hagi.

Juventus: Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Dani Alves, Khedira, Lemina, Asamoah, Alex Sandro; Dybala, Mandzukic

Juventus bench: Neto, Audero, Lichtsteiner, Rugani, Benatia, Evra, Marrone, Hernanes, Pjanic, Pjaca, Higuain, Zaza

Fiorentina: Tatarusanu; Tomovic, Gonzalo Rodriguez, Astori, Alonso; Vecino, Badelj, Chiesa, Bernardeschi; Ilicic; Kalinic

Fiorentina bench: Lezzerini, Dragoswki, De Maio, Sanchez, Diks, Milic, Tello, Mati Fernandez, Babacar, Zarate, Rossi, Hagi

HT 1-0: Khedira surprises Fiorentina

Aug 20, 2016

Sami Khedira’s bullet header has given Juventus the half-time lead over a reshuffled Fiorentina.

The opening weekend provided one of the hottest fixtures in the Serie A calendar, as there’s a bitter rivalry between these sides. Injured Miralem Pjanic and €90m man Gonzalo Higuain were on the bench, but Dani Alves made his competitive Bianconeri bow. Borja Valero missed out with a sprained ankle, but Paulo Sousa shocked everyone by giving Federico Chiesa – the 18-year-old son of legendary striker Enrico – his debut.

Sami Khedira failed to make the most of a poor Ciprian Tatarusanu clearance after four minutes, while Davide Astori’s handball was considered involuntary as it bounced off his leg first.

Kwadwo Asamoah looked sharp and blasted over on the spin and Paulo Dybala’s curler was wide of the far top corner. Dybala and Dani Alves were already combining well, but it was Giorgio Chiellini who provided the unexpected cross for a powerful Khedira header to break the deadlock.

Dybala’s ferocious half-volley skimmed the bar from the edge of the box and Alex Sandro should’ve done better when firing over.

Juventus 1-0 Fiorentina (Half-Time)

Khedira 37 (J)

Juventus: Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Dani Alves, Khedira, Lemina, Asamoah, Alex Sandro; Dybala, Mandzukic

Juventus 2-1 Fiorentina: Super sub

Higuain nets winner on debut

Last term's Serie A top scorer marked his first appearance in Bianconeri colours

with a decisive contribution, giving the hosts a winning start to their title defence.

Gonzalo Higuain came off the bench to score the winner on his Juventus debut, as the Italian champions battled to a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina on Saturday.

The €90 million signing was left out of Massimiliano Allegri's starting XI alongside fellow arrival Miralem Pjanic as the Bianconeri opened their Serie A campaign.

Despite beginning without their big-name signings, Juventus seized the initiative late in the first half when Sami Khedira rose highest to nod home Giorgio Chiellini's cross.

Higuain was then introduced in the 66th minute, but his first appearance in Bianconeri colours did not begin as expected as Nikola Kalinic pulled Fiorentina level with a brilliant header - one of their first meaningful attempts on goal.

That only set up the stage for Higuain to make his decisive contribution, however, as the striker got on the end of a loose ball in the 75th minute to stab home to the joy of the home crowd.

With Higuain on the bench, Mario Mandzukic - who scored twice against Fiorentina last season - started up front and Dani Alves was the only off-season recruit in the hosts' line-up.

Juve enjoyed a typically authoritative start and they should have been ahead within four minutes when Ciprian Tatarusanu's rushed clearance fell kindly for Khedira, who wastefully lifted his effort onto the roof of the net.

Fiorentina were becoming increasingly suspect in defence and debutant Davide Astori was fortunate to survive a penalty appeal when a cross bounced against his left hand.

And it was little surprise when Juve made the breakthrough in the 37th minute.

Chiellini crossed brilliantly from the left and Khedira was clinical this time with a thumping header high past Tatarusanu.

Alex Sandro then squandered an opportunity to double the lead in the final minute of the half, blazing over after Mandzukic had superbly played him in.

Paulo Dybala stabbed a low effort straight at the goalkeeper shortly after the restart, but Juve's momentum slowed and Higuain was summoned from the bench.

The move did not pay immediate dividends, though, as Kalinic rose above Sandro from a Fiorentina corner to brilliantly nod low past Gianluigi Buffon.

However, Fiorentina's joy was short-lived. Khedira's initial effort was blocked, but Higuain was alert to pounce on the loose ball and poke home the winner from tight inside the six-yard box.

Mario Lemina was twice denied a third goal in the closing stages, but it mattered little for the Juve faithful who were left to celebrate their new hero.

Dybala’s ferocious half-volley skimmed the bar from the edge of the box and Alex Sandro should’ve done better when firing over.

Gonzalo Rodriguez nodded over from a free kick, while Carlos Sanchez made his Serie A debut and Higuain his first competitive appearance in a Juve jersey.

Fiorentina had more of the ball in the second half, but Gigi Buffon remained a spectator, as they passed it far too slowly.

However, two Alex Sandro errors allowed Fiorentina to equalise with their first real shot on target. Cristian Tello got away from the Brazilian to force a corner, then Alex Sandro lost Kalinic for a powerful header on the resulting set play.

The Bianconeri seemed shaken, but Higuain came off the bench and opened his Juventus account within eight minutes. Asamoah found Khedira in acres of space on the penalty spot and when his effort was deflected, Pipita pounced to turn in the rebound from the tightest of angles. After so many jokes about his weight, it was essential that the Argentine get off to a strong start in Turin – and he scored with his third touch.

Mario Lemina’s scorching volley from distance forced a tough Tatarusanu save, but Matias Vecino fired over from a Tello cut-back. Deep into stoppages, Andrea Barzagli's defending was decisive on a Federico Bernardeschi free kick and Tatarusanu again got his fingertips to a Lemina snapshot.

Juventus have begun their Serie A season with a 2-1 win over Fiorentina in Saturday's clash at the Juventus Arena.

The first concrete chance of the game fell to the hosts, with Sami Khedira blasting narrowly over the bar in the fifth minute.

Khedira was more successful shortly before the end of the first half, the Germany international nodding home Giorgio Chiellini's lofted cross.

The visitors then were able to drag themselves level in the 70th minute when Nikola Kalinic outjumped the Juve defence from a set piece and nodded into the bottom left corner of the net.

However, the final word would go to the Bianconeri, as new signing Gonzalo Higuain drilled home from close range after a rebound fell kindly into his path.

Aug 20, 2016

Despite the new additions to the squad, the millions spent reinforcing the team and the general feeling that Juve would dominate Serie A this season, the game against Fiorentina gave me cause for concern. Granted, it was only a small concern, rooted in the idea that so much change, especially in midfield, would give La Viola the opportunities to push through the middle of the pitch where the returning Kwadwo Asamoah and the inexperienced Mario Lemina might struggle. Ten minutes into the match, I realised how foolish those concerns were.

Juve may have been without the injured Miralem Pjanic and Claudio Marchisio, but it rarely felt as though we were lacking anything in the centre of the pitch – A bold statement, but one that i’m sure those who watched the match will agree with. Sami Khedira, a truly understated genius of a player, had Juve’s first effort after just 4 minutes when he could and probably should have made more of an error from Fiorentina keeper Ciprian Tatarusanu. Moments later, there was a half-hearted appeal for handball but it was clear Davide Astori didn’t mean to handle the ball.

Juve were dominant and confident, controlling the tempo and quickly pushing back a Fiorentina side that thought they may have some joy pressing the Juve back line. Not tonight Sousa. Dani Alves looked a seasoned Serie A veteran, striding past Marcos Alonso at every opportunity, linking superbly with Paulo Dybala and generally being a thorn in the side of La Viola, cutting inside and out while fighting for every ball with his typical gusto.

More surprising was the ease with which Giorgio Chiellini was able to push forward from defence;  Seldom troubled by the Fiorentina midfield, he got into the opponents half at every opportunity, leaving Leonardo Bonucci to mop-up on the few occasions the visitors got close to the Juve goal. It was only fitting that from one of these forays into opposition territory that the Kaiser was able to fire over a deliciously accurate cross for Sami Khedira to head home – A bullet of a header, 1-0 (You can see the goal further down the page).

Juve were in control – Mario Lemina looked as confident on the ball as when I saw him play his first few games for Juve. He surprised me then and he surprised me last night, picking the ball away from the Badelj and Vecino with ease, recycling play, venturing forward and displaying a great range of passing. He had big shoes to fill an it was no easy feat to play in front of the defence with such confidence.

Despite the dominant displays from both his midfield teammates, it was Kwadwo Asmoah who stole the night. Missing much of last season with injury, the Ghanaian made up for lost time, returning to the left of the midfield three…..and only after the 95 mins were up did i realise that not once during the game had I thought of that French lad who used to play for us. I’m not normally one for letting the stats do the talking, especially as they often fail to give a true account of a players performance, however these two graphics from Squawka illustrating Asamoah’s performance as the game went on and the 91% of passes he completed give an idea of how instrumental he was in the victory. He pressed and harried, he broke up attacks, he anticipated passes, he pushed forward into the box and it was his pass for Khedira that opened up the Fiorentina defence for Juve’s winner.

01 02

Lest I get carried away and make it sound like a one-sided affair, there were a few negatives, namely Alex Sandro. His attacking game wasn’t up to its usually high standard, but it was in defence where he really showed poor judgement, allowing Tello to win a corner and then letting Kalinic get away from him to convert Fiorentina’s only effort on goal.

It was the only real low point of the game, largely due to Juve stepping off, sitting back, giving Fiorentina the ball and inviting pressure – Please, let’s not do this again.

A goal apiece, deadlocked….. What next? Cometh the hour, cometh the (€90m) man. Enter Gonzalo Higuain, strolling onto the pitch, unencumbered by his price-tag (or the unfair headlines about his weight). The former Napoli forward made an almost immediate impact, creating space in the Fiorentina box, pulling players with him, making intelligent runs between the defenders. Sure enough, the pressure paid off – Asamoah recieved the ball with plenty of space, passed in the direction of Higuain – Rather than try and take the ball with his first touch, Pipita cleverly continues his run, taking the defender with him, and freeing space for Khedira to have an effort on goal. In that kind of position and with only the keeper to beat, a goal looks certain…..but Pipita lingers….sees the shot saved and accelerates past Astori to fire home from a tight angle – And all this within the space of 9 mins of being on the pitch. A truly superb debut made all the more special by a winning goal.

With the result assured, Allegri introduced Patrice Evra and Hernanes to firm up the back line and cruise to a well-deserved 3 points and a first win of the 2016/17 campaign. Credit to the boss who went with the more attacking Alves and Sandro on the flanks in an effort to create from wide as well as subbing on Higuain at exactly the right moment.

A few brief mentions – Mandzukic looked a little ill at ease, working in isolation in the box with only Khedira to provide some height and muscle from midfield, while Dybala dropped deep and switched from left to right. The defence looked untroubled for most of the match. Bonucci did what only he can do, pinging some great crosses out from defence, trying to create from the back. Barzagli picked up a rather stupid, but entirely warranted booking for a clumsy challenge.

A confident victory to begin a tough season – Lazio, Inter and Sassuolo await us in the weeks ahead, as well as the Champions League draw on Thursday…..however we have picked up exactly where we left off last season, and that gives me hope for the year ahead. The team looks happy together, the players look as much of a family as they have done for the last 5 seasons, despite the many departures this summer. We can expect a new midfielder to arrive soon, along with the returning Juan Cuadrado who will offer that little something extra. Exciting times ahead. Fino Alla Fine, Forza Juve !!!

Allegri: “The team played a very good first half, especially as we’re not in optimal form yet. I think we should’ve scored more than two goals, as Fiorentina only created one real chance. From a possible counter-attack for us, Alex Sandro lost the ball and we conceded on the corner. There was some fatigue, especially as Khedira had only been training for a couple of weeks. He was decisive in the two situations by running into space. When we had the game in hand, we didn’t hold the ball as well as we should’ve done. We needed to keep the pressure on and force them to defend around their own penalty area, which we didn’t do.”

Gonzalo Higuain was “very happy for my debut, the victory and the goal” as he got off to the perfect Juventus start.

The €90m signing came off the bench and within eight minutes scored the decisive strike as Juve beat Fiorentina 2-1.

“I am very happy for my debut, for the victory and the goal,” Pipita told Mediaset Premium.

“We must continue like this. It was very important to start with a win. We worked hard and the victory was deserved.

“I hope to repay the affection of the fans with many goals. I want to win as many titles as possible, but we’re just at the beginning.

"I dedicate the goal to everyone who had faith in me."

Remarkably, this is the first time Higuain has scored in Serie A Week 1, as in his three years at Napoli, he never opened with a goal.

Juventus made a near perfect start to their title defence

with a solid 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in week 1 of Serie A.

Gigi Buffon

A few brief fumbles aside, the captain was rarely troubled in goal. Could do nothing about Kalinic’s goal but other than that, the defence was rock solid.

5.5 / 10

592320750-juventus-defender-daniel-alves

Dani Alves

Superb debut, up and down the right flank with lots of pace and invention. Clever positioning, and a great understanding with Paulo Dybala already. Great deliveries from the right showed exactly what Juve were missing down that flank last season.

6.5 / 10

 Giorgio Chiellini

Regularly ventured into the Fiorentina half in the first 45 mins and provided a pinpoint cross for Sami Khedira’s opening goal. Kept Kalinic quiet for almost the entire 90 minutes. Sturdy.

6.5 / 10

Andrea Barzagli

Strong at the back, rarely troubled by the Fiorentina attack – Made one tough challenge that resulted in a deserved booking. Otherwise untroubled.

6.0 / 10

Leonardo Bonucci

His customary self – strong in air, easily anticpiated Fiorentina attacks and played the ball out from the back with his usual accuracy.

6.0 / 10

592326346-juventus-argentinian-forward-g

Kwadwo Asamoah

Good to see him back in action, especially when he showed what he can offer when fully fit. Worked tirelessly in the first half, breaking up attacks and trying his luck from range. Even better as the game went on, pulling defenders out of position to create space for Higuain to score.

6.5 / 10

592322964-sami-khedira-of-juventus-fc-re

Sami Khedira

Regularly made runs into the box from midfield and got his reward with a perfectly placed cross from Chiellini which he headed home to put Juve into the lead. An intelligent performance all over the pitch. Man of the match

7.5 / 10

Mario Lemina

Sat in front of the defence and played a near-perfect game. Regularly broke up Fiorentina attacks, shielded the back 3 and provided an outlet. Great range of passing and was unlucky not to score. A big performance from the young midfielder.

7.0 / 10

Alex Sandro

Dangerous going forward, once he had found the right range for his delivery. Caught out for the Fiorentina equaliser and looked a little shaky defensively. A mixed performance.

6.0 / 10

592320068-mario-mandzukic-of-juventus-fc

Mario Mandzukic

Headed a few half-chances over the bar and looked a lonely figure in the box. Struggled to get onto the crosses from Sandro and Alves but he tracked back well and played a decent game.

6.0 / 10

Paulo Dybala

An exciting return to action for La Joya – Linked brilliantly with Alves with whom he seems to have an immediate understanding. Hit one shot onto the crossbar and performed well, considering Fiorentina marked him tightly for most of the match.

6.5 / 10

Max Allegri

Deployed his team perfectly, no change in formation, stuck with the 3-5-2 and used his players to perfect effect. Introduced Higuain at the right moment to give Juve the lead and saw out the game late on with some defensive subs.

Substitutes

592327826-gonzalo-higuain-of-juventus-fc

Gonzalo Higuain

A near perfect debut. Came on as a sub and had an immediate impact. His positioning, his runs, his finishing….everything that Juve have lacked on occasion in previous seasons. Clinical when scoring the winner and could easily have had a second.

7.0 / 10

Patrice Evra

Came on late into the game and provided some stability at the back.

N/A

Hernanes

A late sub to wind the clock down. No real impact on the game.

N/A

Gonzalo Higuain scores winner on debut to give Juventus victory

Gonzalo Higuain scored the winner on his debut to clinch reigning champions Juventus a 2-1 opening-day win in Serie A against Fiorentina.

Argentina international Higuain, signed from Napoli for £75.3 million in July, fired home from close range in the second half after Fiorentina striker Nikola Kalinic had cancelled out Sami Khedira's brilliant first-half header.

Juve secured a fifth straight Scudetto title last season and appeared to be cruising in the first period, but they only had Khedira's goal to show for their dominance and nearly paid the price for wayward finishing when Kalinic stole in for a shock 70th-minute equaliser.

But Higuain, who equalled an 87-year-old Serie A record when scoring 36 league goals for Napoli last season, popped up when it mattered to spare Juve's blushes and ensured they made a winning start.

Germany international Khedira spurned an early opening by firing wide and it appeared a matter of time before Juve would open their goal account for the season against a side who had lost all their pre-season games.

Midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah and Paulo Dybala could easily have given Juve the lead but were off target when well-placed in the 19th and 21st minutes.

Striker Dybala threatened again on the half-hour mark and it was no surprise when the home side took the lead through Khedira's bullet header.

Giorgio Chiellini whipped in a super cross and Khedira stooped to power home an unstoppable header from 12 yards.

Defender Alex Sandro went close to scoring what would have been a deserved second for Juve in the 44th minute, but fired his angled drive over the crossbar.

Juve appeared to take their foot off the gas in the second half after Dybala had fired inches wide again and Fiorentina threatened through Gonzalo Rodriguez's header.

The visitors then hauled themselves level with 20 minutes remaining when Josip Ilicic set up Kalinic following a corner and the latter sent a header into the bottom corner.

But Higuain stole the show five minutes later when he clipped a left-footed finish from the left side of the six-yard box into the bottom corner to restore Juve's lead and the home side comfortably saw out the final 15 minutes.

Gonzalo Higuain heard the cheers from the stands all of a couple of milliseconds after he got up off the bench to warm up for the first time on Saturday night. Juventus Stadium was certainly ready for the €90 million man to make his official Juventus debut no matter when he did get the chance to step onto the field.

It didn’t take long for those cheers to be turned up more than just a few decibel levels.

Just a mere eight minutes into his first game at Juventus Stadium as a Juventus player, Higuain proved to be the difference-maker that so many expect him to be for as long as his career in Turin may last, scoring the game-winning goal in Juve’s 2-1 win over Fiorentina to open the 2016-17 season. It was the immediate response that Juventus needed after seeing Fiorentina convert on their one and only true goal-scoring opportunity of the 90-plus minutes. And it was the goal that said, despite all of the cheeseburger and pizza jokes over the last couple of weeks, that Higuain can do exactly what Juventus brought him in to do.

Goal No. 1 is out of the way.

May there be many more from where that came from.

It was the response that Juventus needed after not only seeing their level of play dip off a bit following a dominant first half, but also after Fiorentina evened things up on their first — and what proved to be the only — shot on goal all game. All of those “Here we go again...” thoughts were on Twitter, lurking in the back of everybody’s mind and pretty much the general feeling with Juve pretty much allowing Fiorentina to hang around even though the difference between how the two teams were playing Saturday was far and wide.

Then came Higuian’s first heroic moment as a Juventus player.

It sure was what the doctor ordered. Juventus got a deserved win in the season opener. For at least one weekend we can say that this season’s start is sooooo much better than what we saw this time 12 months ago. (I feel pretty safe in saying that nobody wants to see that kind of start again, by the way.)

Just like how last season ended, Juventus is atop the table. Feels good, man.

You might not have been on the field for very long, Gonzalo, but you definitely played a pretty big role in Juventus making sure they didn’t stumble in the season opener for the second straight year.

Random thoughts and observations

  • Juventus obviously did few things wrong against Fiorentina, but I have one question: Out of all the great central defenders Juve have, why was it Alex Sandro who was marking Kalinic on Fiorentina’s goal? I mean, Sandro is very good, but there are better — and taller — options.
  • There were a lot of positives to come out of the season opener, and one of the biggest was the performance of Kwadwo Asamoah. How many times did we say during the Antonio Conte days “Gee, I wonder what Asamoah would be able to do in this team if here was playing a more central role...”? Well, obviously the context of things are completely different now compared to when he first arrived, but Asamoah’s showing against Fiorentina resembled that of a guy who’s trying to prove a point. He’s not a lock to start anymore, and with Claudio Marchisio still injured, there’s playing time to be had. If Asamoah continues to play like he did on Saturday, then he’ll be in the starting lineup more often than not.
  • That leads us to Mario Lemina, who is another one of those midfielders who is going to be vying for playing time in Marchisio’s absence. Just like Asamoah, Lemina was easily one of Juventus’ best players Saturday night. Simply because of his injury and who was ahead of him in the pecking order last season, we didn’t get to see him play as a deep-lying midfielder all too much. With Miralem Pjanic not 100 percent to play, Max Allegri chose to go with Lemina in front of the defense — and it worked wonderfully. That’s the kind of talent and performance that makes you think Lemina should stick around this team for years to come.No wonder Juve have reportedly taken him off the market. (If he ever truly was...)
  • It’s still pretty amazing that Juventus were able to sign Sami Khedira on a free transfer last summer. Watching him play, you can clearly see why he’s one of the best around. His goal, coming off a Giorgio Chiellini cross (!!!), was perfectly executed. Just everything about Khedira’s game was on point against Fiorentina. As he likes to say, “Good, very good.” Well done, pool boy.
  • Anybody else notice how often Leonardo Bonucci was using his left foot against Fiorentina? He can be such a showoff sometimes. (Never change, though, Leo.)
  • New Juventus goalkeeper kit power rankings: Black, green, orange. Then again, Gigi Buffon — who had next to nothing to do sans Fiorentina’s goal — can pull off any of them. He’s pretty stylish regardless.
  • This season’s first game > Last season’s first game. That’s the kind of expert analysis you’ve all come to expect from us at BWRAO.

Sousa: 'Fiorentina saw victory'

Paulo Sousa felt Fiorentina had started to “dominate, equalise and think we could win” before the late Juventus decider.  .oddio .asd

Sami Khedira’s header was cancelled out by Nikola Kalinic, but Gonzalo Higuain scored on his Juve debut to seal the 2-1 result.

“Juve put pressure on and made us run a bit more than we did last season, but slowly my team tried to find a way through until we started to dominate, equalise and think we could win the game,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Unfortunately a lucky ricochet went well for our opponents, we kept trying, but Juventus did well to slow the tempo and prevent us from getting the point we deserved from the second half performance.”

Sousa surprised everyone by starting 18-year-old Federico Chiesa – the son of former striker Enrico – because Borja Valero did not recover from a sprained ankle.

“Borja Valero had extensive therapy, but realised he could not give us his best, so I moved on to Chiesa. He works hard, needs to grow tactically and technically, but has a strong mentality and we are trying to help him settle in as quickly as possible to this professional level.

“I think Chiesa can become an important player and future symbol of Fiorentina.

“We worked on a few structural variations and different dynamics with the players we had at the start of pre-season, because many of the players didn’t arrive until quite late.

“We have solid foundations and improved as the game wore on, playing on a par with a great side like Juventus and even aiming for victory.

“Having these other options and versatility can help us be more unpredictable over the course of a campaign.

“Last year we began to dream and encouraged the dream, as it helped everyone believe in what we were doing and build enthusiasm for the project.

“I don’t look to small targets, as I prefer to aim high. I believe all the players can improve, so can the team, and enthusiasm is an important element.

“We began with certain difficulties this summer, but last year people had very low expectations and we raised them. I think this team can repeat the good work we did last season and contribute to Italian football with an important club like Fiorentina.”

Allegri: 'Higuain needs half-chances'

Max Allegri praised Gonzalo Higuain after beating Fiorentina and reiterated a sixth consecutive Scudetto is the prime Juventus objective.

Sami Khedira’s header was wiped out by Nikola Kalinic on a corner, but Higuain made the perfect debut by coming off the bench to score the winner.

“The team played a very good first half, especially as we’re not in optimal form yet. I think we should’ve scored more than two goals, as Fiorentina only created one real chance.

“From a possible counter-attack for us, Alex Sandro lost the ball and we conceded on the corner,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

Higuain was mocked for his weight when first arriving from Napoli for €90m, but seems to have slimmed down a little and proved he could still find the net after just three touches.

“He’s in better shape, just as everyone is. We have five new players and need to become a team. I am very happy with the first half. We defended in a fairly organised manner in the second half too.

“When he gets half a chance, he scores a goal, as you saw tonight. And he’s not in shape yet, but above all needs to improve his understanding with his new teammates.

“There was some fatigue, especially as Khedira had only been training for a couple of weeks. He was decisive in the two situations by running into space.

“When we had the game in hand, we didn’t hold the ball as well as we should’ve done. We needed to keep the pressure on and force them to defend around their own penalty area, which we didn’t do.

“I was worried we’d get stretched out, as Fiorentina relish running into spaces, but we kept it tight.”

Juventus have invested heavily this summer, even with Paul Pogba’s departure, so what are their targets?

“A sixth Scudetto would be legend, so that is our objective. After that there is the Coppa Italia, Champions League and Super Cup. The real target is to improve on what we did in the past.

“I will make choices based on every single game. After the break for international duty, we’ll have eight games in a month and that’s when we need everyone in good shape.

“The objective is always to reach our physical, mental and tactical peak in March. This season that’s even more important.”

Allegri was asked what kind of player he is targeting as a midfield reinforcement, but kept his reply vague.
“Someone good.”

A superior team with superior individuals, Juventus barely needed to break a sweat to defeat arch-rivals Fiorentina 2-1 on the opening day of the new Serie A season.

Juventus started the match with dynamism and clear intent, they were determined to get a result. Squandering a few chances on goal in a half that was dominated by their collective and individual strength, Max Allegri's men scored the opening goal before their opponent had registered a single shot on target.

The second half witnessed a disappointing drop in tempo that provoked theViola into attacking and it took an equaliser to jolt the Bianconeri back into action and back into playing a high line.

Positives

The return of the indomitable Kwadwo Asamoah was vital for the midfield. The player has suffered from various injuries for two years but deployed in the "Pogba role" on the night, the Ghanaian produced a beautiful display of football.

Dynamic, strong and eager to keep the game flowing in the right direction, Juventus will be glad to have the versatile player back to his best.

Negatives

It's disappointing to see that when Juventus feel in control of the game, they drop off, allowing the opponent to get back into the contest.

Sitting deeper than they ever dared in the first half, the Bianconeri eventually conceded an equaliser. Only then did they recover the dynamism and return to applying the right amount of pressure to succeed.

Manager rating out of 10

8 -- The coach ensured the team took nothing for granted and started the match with great enthusiasm but the squad lost their intensity in the second half.

Allegri needed to jolt the team and introduced Gonzalo Higuain who scored the winning goal and then substituted on some experienced players to control the match.

Player ratings (1-10; 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating):

GK Gianluigi Buffon, 6 -- Really couldn't do anything to stop the goal but was barely called into action before then.

DF Andrea Barzagli, 6 -- Struggled a little at first but always a play who instils confidence at the back.

DF Leonardo Bonucci, 6 -- Read certain situations beautifully. Some of his long passes forward weren't as accurate as usual but always ready and capable of defending dangerous play.

DF Giorgio Chiellini, 7 -- Excellent on the night, the defender pushed up well and delivered the perfect assist for the opening goal. Abstained from making rash challenges.

WB Dani Alves, 7 -- The Brazilian seems to have already integrated well within Juve's patterns of play. Commanded the right lane, delivered beautiful crosses and combined well with Paulo Dybala. However, for all his brilliance, the defender can be caught in possession. Luckily he is able to recover well.

MF Sami Khedira, 8 -- Does the German ever disappoint? Khedira timed his runs perfectly and found himself in advantageous positions to score. Missed a perfect opportunity but more than made up for it by scoring the opening goal soon after. Tactically perfect and excellent at carrying out the duality of his role, Khedira ensured the win.

MF Mario Lemina, 6 -- Good at recovering the ball, the youngster was tidy in possession but can be caught out of position. Must rely more on his technique than his physical strength.

MF Kwadwo Asamoah, 8 -- The best player on the pitch. Excellent on the ball, the midfielder demonstrated great intelligence on the day and ensured the ball kept moving. Brought others into play, always kept possession and demonstrated his fitness and spirit of sacrifice.

Kwadwo Asamoah

WB Alex Sandro, 6 -- Sandro contributes so much to both the attacking and defensive side of the game. He created the most number of chances yet also managed to make the highest number of tackles. However, his blunders are too costly and it's due to him that Fiorentina were allowed to equalise.

FW Paulo Dybala, 7 -- A player of immense quality, the Argentine often dropped back to link up play and provide the creativity Juventus lacked due to the departure of Paul Pogba and the absence of Miralem Pjanic. His constant movement and wonderful intelligence troubled Fiorentina's defence.

FW Mario Mandzukic, 6 -- A player who always works hard for the team and less for himself, he created space for his teammates and demonstrated his ability to defend from the top.

Substitutes

FW Gonzalo Higuain, 8 -- Scored the winning goal after only three touches, the Argentine showed off his technique and predatory nature by producing an excellent finish.

Gonzalo Higuain got Juventus off to a winning start in Serie A.

DF Patrice Evra, N/A -- His arrival signalled Juve's desire to protect the lead. Wasn't on long enough to contribute effectively.

MF Hernanes, N/A -- Only allowed two minutes to make an impression.

Aug 21, 2016

Aaaaaand we’re back! The new season is officially underway!

What a way to kick things off, too: A packed Juventus Stadium with an electric atmosphere, one of Italy’s better teams who have a bitter hatred for us rolling into town, Gonzalo Higuain officially opening his J account, Hernanes gifting possession with one of his first touches, Hernanes dribbling past the entire Viola team before scoring a screamer of a goal.

One of the above is a lie, so any guesses as to which?

Juventus started the game having come roaring out of the blocks. Straight from the kickoff, Fiorentina lost the ball to Paulo Dybala near the halfway line, and Kwadwo Asamoah got the chance to run at the defense from the middle, before being felled down and giving Paulo Dybala a free kick opportunity 23 meters from goal that he could only shoot into the wall.

Pressing very aggressively up the field, Juve kept stealing the ball in dangerous positions. The best chance of the opening exchanges occurred at the four-minute mark, when Dybala put Tatarusanu under pressure, and his poor clearance gifted Khedira the ball within the 18 yard box. Sami Khedira’s lob just went over the bar however. Juve also had penalty appeals waved away, when a Dybala cross seemed to hit Astori on the arm, only after bouncing accidentally off his foot however.

A bulldozing Giorgio Chiellini run found Asamoah unmarked in the box, but he too skied his effort high and wide, while a few minutes later Dybala found himself in space outside the box after a low cutback from Sandro, but his finish ended up going harmlessly wide.

As the half wore on, the Dybala-Dani Alves duo began to torment Marcos Alonso and Davide Astori on the right side, and a beautiful interplay and 1-2 between them ended with Dybala breaking into the box and trying to curl one into the far corner, but this too went wide.

Just as Fiorentina began to find their footing, some brilliant interplay down the left side ended up with Chiellini firing in a pin point cross right between the CB’s, for Khedira to come rushing in and fire a bullet header past the fingertips of Tatarusanu to give Juve a deserved lead.

Dybala continued to find himself in excellent positions, but missed his shooting boots on the night. On the stroke of halftime, Mario Lemina won the ball in midfield and threaded through a beautiful pass to Mario Mandzukic, who held the ball well with his back to goal, before feeding in an onrushing Alex Sandro, who again couldn’t keep his shot low enough to trouble the goalkeeper.

The second half started in the same vein as the first, as a long Leonardo Bonucci ball was headed on by Mandzukic into the path of Sandro down the left. His low cross found Dybala, but he was well marshaled by the defense who blocked his shot. Mandzukic continued to be a nuisance to the Viola defense, and a few minutes later he found himself in space in the Viola box, but could only head Alves’ cross over the bar.

Eventually the Viola gained a foothold in the game, and they began to maintain possession in our half. For our part, we decided to sit back a little and let them keep possession without pressing intensely, as it was amounting to very little in the form of chances. This, however, did come back to haunt us eventually. Sandro completely lost Tello down the right, whose low cross was cleared by Bonucci for a corner. Once again, Sandro afforded Nikola Kalinic way too much respect and space from the resulting Ilicic corner, and the big prima punta headed in the equalizer.

This awoke the Old Lady from their pedestrian tempo, and we began to exert dominance over the possession again. The Viola Happiness was very fleeting, as substitute Gonzalo Higuain fired Juve into the lead a mere five minutes later. Sandro broke down the left flank menacingly, and he threaded the ball through to Asamoah in space outside the box. The Ghanian brilliantly fed the ball into Khedira inside the box, only for his shot to be blocked. The rebound fell to Higuain at a tight spot, but he pounced and made no mistake in beating an onrushing Tatarusanu to restore our one goal lead.

Having surrendered the lead to the only real shot afforded to the Viola, Juve were loathe to let that happen again, and they maintained control of the ball as the game headed towards its end. A brilliant Lemina break from midfield found Khedira on the right flank, and his cross was inches away from Higuain, with Rodriguez’s toes keeping the deficit at one.

Lemina and Asamoah’s physicality and engines ended up being crucial in helping us maintain possession, and the Gabonese even fired two brilliant long range efforts in the final ten minutes that forced Tatarusanu into fingertip saves.

A skied effort from Matias Vecino following some smart work by Cristian Tello on the flank was the most the Viola could muster in the closing stages, and the Old Lady saw the game out and sealed the 3 points.

TACTICS

Juve lined up in their customary 3-5-2, while Fiorentina started the game in a 3-4-2-1 kind of shape, with Federico Bernardeschi and Alonso serving as wide midfielders, and 18-year-old Federico Chiesa and Ilicic playing free roam roles in support of Kalinic. However, considering how high we were pressing them, our shape looked more like a 3-3-4 for the bulk of the first half, with Alves and Sandro parked high up the pitch and stretching the Viola defense to the max. This ended up completely negating Kalinic’s aerial threat, as the wingbacks/wide mids Bernardeschi and Alonso, spent most of the half tracking the runs of our Brazilian wing back duo deep in their own half. The chemistry between Khedira, Alves and Dybala down the right seemed to be our greatest source of inspiration, as the players enjoyed an almost telepathic understanding of each other’s movements. Asamoah and Sandro too showed much improved chemistry down the left, and Sandro frequently found himself in great positions to fire in crosses from.

Sandro ended up being parked so high up the pitch, that Asamoah found himself playing more as a left mid himself, and Kalinic’s isolation resulted in Chiellini taking advanced positions in midfield often, and one such move led to his brilliant assist for Khedira’s opening goal.

Sousa sensed his team were on the back foot, and he changed things up at half time by bringing on Christian Tello for Chiesa, to occupy the right flank, so that Bernardeschi could move further up in support of Kalinic. As Juve began to sit back in the second half, Barnardeschi and Ilicic ended up seeing a lot of the ball within our own half, and finally their wide mids Alonso and Tello, found themselves in advanced positions down the wing from where they could fire in a few crosses for Kalinic.

While Dybala seemed to be enjoying himself dropping deep and playing free flowing one touch football with Khedira and Alves, this left Mandzukic isolated against 3 CB’s for most of his time on the pitch. The Higuain substitution ended up being very positive, as the Argentinian’s off the ball running alone was enough to peg the defenders back, and push our midfield higher up the field as a whole.

Both teams seemed to tire significantly in the second half as they continue to build on their fitness. Alves and Sandro in particular faded quite a bit, and they didn’t get much chance to whip in crosses in the second half. The midfield trio of Khedira, Lemina and Asamoah worked their socks off however, and tirelessly kept possession ticking over all game.

PLAYER RATINGS

Buffon: 6.5 – Gigi might as well have brought a lawn chair out and lazed in it all game. Except for pulling the ball out of his net, he had almost nothing to do and didn’t make any saves of note all game. Considered giving him a 10 just for being Gigi and leading us out in that sharp green jersey.

Barzagli: 7 – So effective were our wingbacks and midfield in pegging the Viola back, that our defense had very little to do all game except snuff out any potential half threats before they even materialize. The Wall had a very very solid game, and he played a little wider than normal to afford Alves the space to run riot down the right flank. Did pick up a booking for a surprisingly rash tackle on Kalinic, however.

Bonucci: 7 – Big Leo spent most of the game keeping an eye on Kalinic and cleaning up any long balls aiming to find the target man. He won almost all his duels against him, and seems to have resumed where he left off at the Euros: in great form and condition. His passing seemed a little off in the first half, but was back to its imperious best in the second, as he sprayed the ball all over like a regista, while Lemina did the bulk of the hatchet work in the middle.

Chiellini: 7.5 – Great game for King Kong. He marshaled the left side of the defense with a hawk’s eye and snuffed out any and all threats without hesitation. He was surprisingly effective in the Viola half in the first period, as he broke forward in support of Asamoah and Sandro, and found himself in decent positions with the ball. His assist for Khedira was beautiful.

Alves: 7 – Enjoyed a stellar first half as he ran riot down the right, playing more as a right winger than wingback. His passing and link-up play with Dybala and Khedira was a joy to behold, and brings a whole new dimension to our attack. The prospect of what this trio can do once Claudio Marchisio and Miralem Pjanic are fit is an enticing thought. He fired in a few decent crosses, and kept Alonso quiet for most of the match. He faded significantly in the second half, though, as the team began to sit back a little. Still, very encouraging competitive debut from the veteran.

Khedira: 8.5 – MotM. His presence elevates our midfield to lofty heights. It was a positional masterclass from Khedira, as he was lively all over the pitch. He and Alves managed to keep the left side of Fiorentina’s attack very quiet for the entire game, and he was simply devastating in the final third, scoring one, should have scored another, and playing a crucial role in the second goal. His ability to be in the right place at the right time is the epitome of in-game sense. Clocked significant minutes without visibly tiring. Wrap him up in wool, Max, we need him fit!

Lemina: 7.5 – Fantastic display by the Gabonese. He brings a different playing style to the team as compared to Claudio, which is a super tool to have. His physicality is impressive, as is his engine. While his decision making and final pass does need some work, they’re definitely areas he has the potential to improve. He held the ball well in midfield without taking too many risks, and kept possession ticking with efficacy. Also showed some brilliant passing to release the wing backs down the wings. Very encouraging display!

Asamoah: 8 – A succinct reminder of what he is capable of, Asamoah was amazing. Again, brings something very different from what we were used to with Pogba, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’ve been very critical of his chemistry with Sandro since last season, but the two appeared to be completely on the same wavelength tonight. While he doesn’t inspire 100% confidence when trying to play the ball out of defense, he was supremely tidy in possession, and going forward, he too has a great in-game sense that enables him to exploit the space between the opposing midfield and defense. Seems to be back to his best physically, as his tireless engine was on full display all game long.

Sandro: 6.5 – He was a real menace down the left, and it was a shame that he couldn’t tally an assist on any of his forward forays and crosses. He seems to only be getting better physically, and his blossoming understanding with Asamoah and Lemina is very encouraging, as he linked up well with both. He loses points for two silly mistakes that led to the goal however, as his misjudging of a long ball gave Tello the space to win the corner, from which he consequently failed to mark Kalinic properly. He has a high ceiling, but he still needs to improve certain aspects of his game.

Dybala: 7 – He looks like he’s thoroughly enjoying his football at the moment. Has developed a brilliant understanding with Alves, and it’s a shame we couldn’t see his chemistry with Pjanic this game. He consistently found himself in great positions, and on another night, he might have had one, if not two goals. Still working his way to peak fitness however, and he faded visibly in the second half. If he can maintain his level all game, we have a world beater on our hands.

Mandzukic: 6.5 – Mario’s score isn’t for lack of effort. The somewhat defensive nature of our midfield, in that they preferred to sit back and make late runs into the box, coupled with Dybala dropping deep to find the ball, meant that he was often isolated against the Viola centerbacks. He still used his imposing physique and brilliant hold up play to the fullest when given the chance, but all in all, he would benefit from Pjanic’s presence on set pieces, and a better understanding with the wing backs.

Higuain: 7.5 – What a way to respond to the naysayers! Opportunities were limited for Pipita as the team sat back and energy levels dropped, but all he needs is a half chance to make a difference. Brilliant finish to win us the game, and he showed bright off the ball movements too. He looks much sharper and fitter now, and hopefully this is but a sign of things to come. His menacing positioning must have been tough to deal with after Mario’s physicality and hold up play.. Two vastly different styles.

That’s all from me, and have a great week, guys!

The season is well and truly underway!

Juve can't afford sleepwalking

It was a deserved and solid win against Fiorentina, but Juventus have to learn

to stay awake for 90 minutes, writes Vincent Van Genechten.

Did Juventus look good during their first game of the new Serie A season? Yes, they did. The Old Lady were keen to avoid a repeat of last season's drama, when Udinese beat them 1-0 on home turf, and they succeeded by seeing off a fairly underwhelming Fiorentina side 2-1.

Juve's first half was particularly impressive. The Bianconeri, next to Claudio Marchisio, also missed Miralem Pjanic due to injury concerns, but they dominated the ball and pushed forward really well. Dani Alves looked at home on his right wing, while Sami Khedira once again made everyone in Turin wonder why Real Madrid let this guy walk for free.

The Viola struggled to keep possession, which was usually their main strength. The Old Lady were out for an early kill and pressured Fiorentina into mistakes by applying Pep Guardiola's ball-winning rule: don't allow the opposing team to have the ball longer than six seconds. And it worked to perfection.

Kwadwo Asamoah was in the middle of it all. The Ghana midfielder looked like his former self again, a versatile player that uses his football IQ, positional play, athleticism, and energy to make life miserable for any opponent. Defensively, Juventus were pumping on all cylinders and being 1-0 ahead at the break was just a translation of their strong first half.

And then, it happened again - Juve's sleepwalk. For some reason, the Bianconeri stopped pushing the ball forward. Consequently, they forgot to finish off Fiorentina by scoring a second goal and, therefore, giving the Viola a shot at a draw. And of course, Nikola Kalinic beat Gigi Buffon with a strong header while registering his team's first and only attempt on target.

Fortunately, their record man Gonzalo Higuain saved his new club by squeezing a rebound past Ciprian Tatarusanu and handing Juve three points to start the season. This team is massively talented and the deepest squad in Serie A, meaning Juve will be able to win games based on pure quality.

However, the sleepwalk, in combination with set pieces, has been Juve's kryptonite for quite some time now. While other top clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich keep playing full throttle, the Bianconeri tend to shift to a lower gear because they are satisfied with a small win.

In the end, winning is what matters and Juventus don't care if it happens by scoring one, two, three or 10 goals more than the opposing team. And neither should they. But they have to stay awake for 90 minutes, as they can't just rely on a small lead. The faster the kill, the better. That's a mentality Juventus have to adopt.

Strootman: ‘Roma don’t fear Juventus’ sefz

http://www.football-italia.net/90236/strootman-‘roma-don’t-fear-juventus’

Aug 23, 2016

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman admits Juventus “have the best players on paper” but “we don’t fear anyone”.

The Giallorossi have, along with Napoli, been the Old Lady’s closest challengers in recent seasons, but have been unable to prevent the Turin giants racking up five Scudetti in a row.

“Once again they’ve taken the best players by buying them from their competitors, both us and Napoli” Strootman acknowledged in an interview with AD, with the Bianconeri having signed Miralem Pjanic and Gonzalo Higuain.

“It’s a bit like what Bayern Munich do in Germany with Borussia Dortmund. Does it bother us? It is what it is, so we don’t waste energy on it.

“They’ll have the best players on paper, but we can beat anyone and we don’t fear anyone.”

Chiellini: ‘Lazio are formidable’

http://www.football-italia.net/90122/juve-cant-afford-sleepwalking?

Aug 23, 2016

Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini warns Lazio are “a formidable team” ahead of their meeting on Saturday.

The Bianconeri haven’t lost to the Roman side in Serie A since January of 2003, with no wins in their last 11 meetings in all competitions.

Despite those statistics, the Old Lady won’t be taking the trip to face the Aquile lightly.

“Lazio have always been a good squad on a medium to high level,” Chiellini explained to Sky.

“In recent years they’ve always been battling to reach Europe, which sometimes they haven’t done, and they’ve got to the latter stages of competitions like the Coppa Italia so many times.

“We played against them in the Supercoppa and they’ve always done pretty well in the Europa League. This year what they’re looking for - and what was missing last year - is that connection with the fans.

“Paradoxically, the situation with [Marcelo] Bielsa which at first caused confusion could bring the Lazio fans back onside with the return of Simone Inzaghi.

“Then if you look at their squad they have a group of players who are all around the same level. The return of [Stefan] De Vrij will definitely help them in terms of how open they were last season.

“They’re a formidable team, and we’ll have to play a great game. A decent game won’t be enough to win on Saturday.”

Roma exit boosts Juve and Napoli

http://www.football-italia.net/90274/roma-exit-boosts-juve-and-napoli?

Aug 23, 2016

Roma’s Champions League exit not only damages them financially, but it boosts the coffers of Juventus and Napoli.

The Giallorossi crashed out of the competition in the preliminary round, losing 4-1 on aggregate to Porto, and will enter the Europa League group phase instead.

This changes the way the money from the Champions League, including TV rights, are divided up.

Roma will only get €10m, while the remaining €100m will be split between Juventus and Napoli.

The first €50m is divided thusly: €27.5m to Juventus and €22.5m to Napoli (55 per cent to 45 per cent).

The second €50m will depend on how many games they each take part in during the course of the Champions League.

Napoli will be in Pot 2, which should ensure they get a relatively good draw.

They are paired with Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Sevilla, Porto and Bayer Leverkusen.

Basel will only be in Pot 2 in the unlikely case Manchester City are knocked out, while Celtic will be on Pot 3 or 4 depending on the results of Wednesday’s play-offs.

Parolo: 'Fearless Lazio-Juve'

http://www.football-italia.net/90315/parolo-fearless-lazio-juve

Aug 24, 2016

Marco Parolo is confident Lazio will face Juventus “without fear, as Simone Inzaghi is giving us a new team spirit.”

The Aquile made a strong start to the season with their 4-3 victory away to Atalanta, despite a chaotic summer.

“It’ll be a big game that will allow us to understand if we’re on the right track. We are highly motivated and can’t wait to face this challenge,” said midfielder Parolo in a Press conference.

“We drew a line under last season and started again with a new spirit thanks also to Coach Inzaghi. I saw many young players who wanted to listen and work hard.

“I was struck by Inzaghi’s charisma and we’re creating a great group here. We’ve got solid foundations and proved that against Atalanta, so we can build on this to get excellent results.

“Compared to last season we have the strong desire to stay solid at the back and always play to win. That’s what we did in Bergamo, albeit with a bit of a struggle.

We have things to improve, but I think we’re on the right track, as this approach will be more entertaining for us and the fans.

“We lost some experienced players like Miroslav Klose, Antonio Candreva, Stefano Mauri and Abdoullay Konko, so the newcomers need time to grow, but I don’t think we are weaker.

“How far can Lazio go? It’s difficult to say now, so let’s discuss it again in two months.”

Lazio host Juventus this weekend and both teams are feeling confident.

“They are a strong side, so their players and results speak for themselves. We’ll need a more than perfect performance. We’ll give it our all and hope for a bit of luck too.

“You can make predictions in football, but nothing is impossible. We must face them without fear.”

Parolo was a regular for Italy at Euro 2016, so what did he learn from the giants like Gigi Buffon?

“I learned from the Juve players in the Italy squad that they never let go for a minute, not even in training. This is what creates that constant hunger for victory.”

2016 Champions League group stage draw:

Looking at Juventus' potential opponents

Here's what you need to know.

champions-league-group-stage-draw-looking-at-juventus-potential-opponents

Aug 25, 2016

The stage is set for the Champions League group stage draw at noon ET Thursday. Following the completion of the final five play-off matches Wednesday, UEFA confirmed the four pots the 32 teams have been divided into.

Here's what to know about Juventus for the drawing:

  • They're in Pot 1, alongside reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid and champions of the top seven associations based on their 2015 UEFA country coefficients. .
  • They cannot be drawn against any Italian side in the group stage.
  • Each of the eight groups will contain one team from each pot, while no group can contain more than one side from a single country.
Based on this criteria, Juventus is left with 24 potential opponents in the group stage as Italian side Napoli sits in Pot 2. There's a bevy of options including facing last year's runner-up Atletico Madrid.

Last year, Juventus had Manchester City, Sevilla and Borussia Mönchengladbach in its group. The four sides won't be put together again with Manchester City and Sevilla both in Pot 2.

Best case scenario: Bayer Leverkusen, Club Brugge and Ludogorets Razgrad.

Worse case scenario: Atletico Madrid, PSV Eindhoven and Celtic/Monaco

Following a runner-up finish in 2015 to Barcelona, Juventus fell to Bayern in the round of 16 last year after taking second-place in Group D to Man City. Juventus last won its group in 2013.

GROUP STAGE MATCHDAYS

Sept. 13, 14

Sept. 27, 28

Oct. 18, 19

Nov. 1, 2

Nov. 22, 23

Dec. 6, 7

The draw will also include the 2015-16 UEFA Best Player in Europe awards for men and women.

Cannavaro on Juve, Napoli in CL

http://www.football-italia.net/90344/cannavaro-juve-napoli-cl

Aug 25, 2016

Fabio Cannavaro says Juventus will miss Paul Pogba in the Champions League, whilst Napoli profited from the sale of Gonzalo Higuain.

The two clubs are the only remaining representatives for Italy in the elite European tournament, but the World Champion and current Tianjin Quanjian Coach has doubts about their odds of winning.

“Juve certainly reinforced themselves, they have a deep and complete squad,” said Cannavaro to the Gazzetta dello Sport. “And I think Higuain is stronger than Morata. But winning the Champions League is incredibly tough.

“Juve have acquired the habit of winning in Italy, but in Europe things are different. And it's no easy task to replace Pogba, who guaranteed not just goals and technique but also a physicality that [Miralem] Pjanic doesn't have.

“As well as the strength of Higuain, I like the drive and personality provided by Dani Alves on the wing. But the team must be evaluated according to the new balance that [Coach Max] Allegri will manage to develop. It'll take a bit of time.

“Winning the groups stage is going to be important for two reasons. Firstly because it will set them up against a second-placed team in the Last 16, which presumably is not going to be one of the favourites. And secondly, because winning helps to win.

“Being in the first seed is a bit helpful. I hope they can avoid Cholo Simeone's Atletico Madrid, they're a team that really developed in the last few years.

“The other clubs are within range of the Bianconeri. It almost seems more important to avoid Tottenham Hotspur in the third pot, because the English are always competitive. And they're in a terrifice condition of form in this period.”

Napoli will be seeded in the second rank themselves, and Cannavaro discussed their prospects too.

“I think I'd rather they faced a big team from the first pot, perhaps a Spanish one. Playing matches of a great level would help [Coach Maurizio] Sarri's team develop. I hope they'll make it out of the groups, but it's not like they have to win the Champions.

“Signing [Arkadiusz] Milik was an excellent choice after the loss of Higuain, who is practically irreplaceable. I'm convinced that [Lorenzo] Insigne will keep developing, and that [Kalidou] Koulibaly and Jorginho will confirm themselves.

“Their task will be to keep a high level of competitiveness in both tournaments, as the Champions League drains a lot of energies.

“Napoli, alongside Roma, can challenge Juve in the Scudetto race. Sarri is their ace up the sleeve.”

Finally, the 42-year-old was asked whether the Neapolitans would be able to get over the departure of Higuain.

“It won't be easy. He was deeply loved and he had turned into the symbol of the race against Juve. Seeing him there, now, isn't easy for my people. But when you have a clause, what can you do?

“The truth is that everybody gained from this deal, with no exceptions. I'm a bit perplexed because I've seen [Ezequiel] Lavezzi, then [Edinson] Cavani and now Higuain all departing. If you sell your best players, it's tough to develop.”
