Daniele Rugani Learning At Juventus Or Stalling His Career?

"Our strong point is the defence,” Beppe Marotta told Radio Anch’io Sport (h/t Football Italia) on Monday, the Juventusdirector general under no illusions about the quality of the back line he has assembled in Turin.

Gigi Buffon is arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the club’s history, yet such is the level of talent ahead of him that the Juve skipper rarely has much work to do. Indeed, according to figures taken from Fox Soccer, a staggering 21 players have made more saves than his tally of nine.

When noting that Serie A is 20-team league that figure looks truly remarkable, with a number of other statistics serving to further showcase the strength Marotta had rightly highlighted.

The Bianconeri have restricted opponents to just 6.7 shots per game, according to WhoScored.com, with Napoli boasting the closest comparable figure in allowing 9.0 efforts per game to hit Pepe Reina’s goal.

10 - Juventus have faced only 10 shots on target this season, record in the top five European Leagues. Sturdy.

Supported by the rest of the side, Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini have clearly been in superb form, the trio routinely starting matches in unison as Massimiliano Allegri’s first-choice back three.

Marotta reinforced that unit further still this summer, acquiring formerAS Roma standout Medhi Benatia on loan from Bayern Munich, the Morocco international quickly readjusting to life back in Serie A.

With three league starts he settled into being part of that excellent defence, but his arrival has cast something of a shadow over the future of Daniele Rugani. With Benatia joining a squad that already boasted those three incredible Italy stars, the youngster appeared to be pushed even further down the pecking order.

He certainly found himself on the fringes of the first team in the first two months of the season, which Allegri explained at a pre-matchpress conference before the recent clash with Cagliari:

Daniele Rugani will start and we’ll be assessing the condition of Medhi Benatia in the coming days. Daniele has improved a lot since arriving here even if his playing time was relatively low last term.

He has trained very well over the summer and, as I’ve said before, will be an important Juventus player for years to come. Given the number of matches we’ll be playing, you can expect to see lots of Rugani this campaign.

Inserted into the side from the outset, the 22-year-old marked his first appearance of the season with his maiden Juventus goal, smashing home a simple rebound after Marco Storari had done well to deny a volley from Gonzalo Higuain.

Rugani gives his Juve the lead!

“I’m delighted for my first goal, the win and many other reasons,” he told JTV (h/t Football Italia) shortly after the final whistle, and he certainly had many reasons for feeling positive about his overall performance.

Playing on the right of the three-man defence, Rugani turned in another sound defensive display, proving once again that he belongs at such a big club and can play with the required intensity and concentration demanded by Juventus.

As the FourFourTwo Stats Zone graphic in the tweet below highlights, he registered one tackle, two interceptions, two clearances and won two aerial duels while also completing 45 of his 50 pass attempts.

.@DanieleRugani vs Cagliari: 1 tackle, 2 interceptions, 2 clearances, 2/2 aerial duels, 45/50 passes (90%), 3 fouls (via@StatsZone)

Blocking one cross, he also received a yellow card and committed three fouls, all in the opposition half as Juve pressed high up the pitch against an overwhelmed Cagliari side who simply could not cope with the pressure exerted by the Bianconeri.

Rugani retained his place for the trip to Palermo last Saturday, but he would need to be replaced after just 31 minutes, with the official Juventus website later revealing Rugani had strained the collateral ligament in his right knee.

That has seen him ruled out of action for approximately 45 days, meaning he has not been called up to the Italy squad for the forthcoming international break.

Having been part of Giampiero Ventura’s group for last month’s Azzurri fixtures, hopes were high he could be involved once again, but that is not to be now.

Good to see Criscito back. Always played well for Italy, got unfairly ousted after that nonsense at the Euros

Looking at those defenders, you realise how badly Rugani is being hurt not playing. I know he's injured, but he prob won't have been called

Despite the fitness issue ultimately preventing the coach from calling Rugani, many—including Serie A writer David Swan in the tweet above—questioned the impact being at Juventus is having on the player’s career.

At the age of 22, he needs to gather more first-team experience, not be pushed deeper down the bench by the Bianconeri’s continued strengthening. Juve supporters may well counter by arguing that if he was good enough to play then he would become impossible to omit, but there is no denying the delicate balance of the situation.

The concern comes from wanting to see Rugani succeed, a hope born from his impressive performances at former side Empoli, the club where his career began and where his potential first became apparent.

Joining the Tuscan side after growing up in the nearby town of Lucca, Rugani represented Italy at numerous age groups and was scouted extensively by the Bianconeri, who signed him in the summer of 2012.

Dropped into their youth sector, he would help the club win the Primavera Coppa Italia before returning to Empoli a year later. With the Azzurri in Serie B, Rugani would play 40 matches—completing 90 minutes in all but one—and help earn the side a place in the top flight much to the delight of their fans.

“Rugani is one of the best players we’ve ever had,” Empoli supporter Francesco told Bleacher Report recently. “After one year in the Juventus academy he came back on loan, and in Serie A at age of 20, he played like a veteran!”

Juventus allowed him to remain with the newly promoted side and would see him thrive in Serie A, playing every minute of the season and developing into a tactically versatile and physically strong central defender.

0/50 - Daniele Rugani has played his first 50 Serie A games without picking up any card. Fair.

He also managed not to pick up a single booking, a wonderful achievement in a league which has so often been synonymous with strategic fouling.

His performances would prompt Juve to recall him, bringing the youngster into a dominant squad in the hope that he could learn from the high-calibre players surrounding him.

That is certainly a view shared by Rugani—a keen and willing student—as he discussed the various qualities of the team’s “BBC” trio in an interview with Sky Italia back in April (h/t Football Italia):

They’re three unbelievable defenders, who have the perfect mix of attributes. You’ve the phenomenal concentration levels of Barzagli, the physicality and grit of Chiellini and in Bonucci you’ve a strong character and great technical ability to build up the play from the back.

Yet just what is he learning? The table below shows his per-game statistics in various categories, with the most obvious decrease coming in his number of clearances. Falling from 6.9 in 2014/15 to 2.8 last term, his composure on the ball now much improved due to the increased faith he has in his team-mates.

While there is no parallel jump in his number of passes, it must be remembered that Empoli were a phenomenally good side in possession under now-Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri, meaning Rugani was already happy to pick out team-mates before returning to Turin.

Watching him play now for the Old Lady, he is a far more accomplished all-round defender than he was even 12 months ago, with the man himself admitting he had to change his style to fulfil what was demanded of him by the Serie A champions.

“To stay in the Juventus group, you need to always be more determined, even taking risks with some interventions and getting a yellow card,” he told Tuttosport (h/t Football Italia) back in May.

“The coach has often told me to become more aggressive, not more dirty,” he added, finishing a lengthy interview by saying he was “happy with the chances given to me” in 2015/16.

With his former Italy under-21 partner Alessio Romagnoli playing regularly for AC Milan, the two Azzurrini stars have taken very different career paths. The Rossoneri man has made 40 appearances in Serie A since joining the club in the summer of 2015, playing over 2,200 minutes more than Rugani over that period.

Romagnoli is learning the hard way, thrown into action every weekend alongside a raft of ill-fitting and subpar defensive players, teaching himself to survive in a team that continues to struggle.

Meanwhile, Rugani watches on as the BBC triumvirate excel, getting a top-class education but one with limited practical application. He has been taught to play in a three-man defence as well as a back four and looks settled in either, but it remains to be seen how long he is willing to wait behind Juve’s veteran stars.

There is little doubt that patience is the key to the entire situation. The Bianconeri must hope he has the willingness to wait for space to open up as Barzagli and Chiellini show signs of ageing, while Allegri must have the faith to play Rugani more and more as that happens.

Already an accomplished and intelligent player, remaining with the Bianconeri will almost certainly guarantee him regular call-ups for the full national team along the way. The defences of Italy and Juventus have long been intertwined, with Rugani merely the latest star defender to wear both shirts with pride.

The naysayers bemoan the fact he's not playing more regularly at the age of 22, but with so much time on his side and the best teachers any young defender could have, Rugani cannot fail to improve. His chance with Juventus will come, and the evidence shows he'll be ready.

Rugani: ‘Huge pressure on Juventus’

http://www.football-italia.net/94465/rugani-‘huge-pressure-juventus’?

Nov 17, 2016

Juventus defender Daniele Rugani acknowledges “the expectations on us are huge” but “we must ignore external pressures”.

The Bianconeri have won the double for the past two seasons in a row, and are expected to go deep into the Champions League this season after a Last 16 exit last term.

“As we know, the expectations on us are huge this year,” Rugani admitted, speaking to Sky.

“So we have to be strong as a group and put those external pressures aside, even the ones that come if we have subdued first half and go in at 0-0, or don’t express the best of our game.

“So we all know how it is, and we have to accept the situation this year and make sure we’re all united.

“We must ignore these external pressures and continue on our path, continue to take points and try to move forward in every competition.”

Rugani is seen as the future of the Juve backline, and believes he has improved a lot in his two seasons in the first team.

“I’m growing as a player and as a man, all thanks to the greater responsibility and the environment.

“I’ve made progress, but I still have a lot to learn to become an important part of this team in the future.”

Reports: Juventus, Daniele Rugani agree to

contract extension through 2020-21 season

Ever since Juventus bought Daniele Rugani’s contract in full a few years ago, he has always been viewed as the future of the Juventus defense. Sure, there were already top-notch defenders like Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini already around, but the long-term vision was certainly centered around the talents of Rugani and it goes from there.

There’s one way to ensure that Rugani is the future — to keep him around as long as Juve possibly can.

According to multiple Italian media outlets, Juventus and Rugani have agreed to a contract extension through the 2020-21 season. Those same reports suggest that pretty much everything is a done deal and all that remains is an official announcement from the club themselves — which could very well mean something is happening in relatively short order.

Some folks say he’s actually signed the deal. Others say a new deal has simply been agreed upon. Either way, all signs point toward a contract extension being in Rugani’s future. And that means his future involves Juventus — which wasn’t necessarily in doubt, but always a good reminder nevertheless.

For the better part of his time with Juventus over the last year and a half, Rugani has been an option off the bench for manager Max Allegri. However, with Juventus’ current injury troubles, it’s hard to see Rugani’s playing time not take a serious uptick as Bonucci and Barzagli are out until the new year and both Chiellini and Medhi Benatia made of glass. There are now plenty of opportunities for Rugani to show his worth and once again prove to many folks why he’s viewed as a building block for the present and future.

And with his new contract reportedly close to being a reality, you have to think that he’d like to show what he’s worth, too. Not always the worst thing in the world to have happen these days with young players.

Juventus' Defensive Crisis Gives Daniele Rugani Chance To Shine

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2679027-juventus-

defensive-crisis-gives-daniele-rugani-chance-to-shine

Nov 30, 2016

Tuesday’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football Italia) spoke of a crisis meeting at Juventus, with Italy’s leading sports newspaper believing that the Bianconeri hierarchy would sit down to discuss the club’s deepening injury crisis.

Before Sunday’s 3-1 capitulation at the hands of Genoa, coach Massimiliano Allegri was already working without Paulo Dybala, Andrea Barzagli and Marko Pjaca, while Claudio Marchisio, Gonzalo Higuain and Giorgio Chiellini were still working their way back to full fitness.

However, the situation would only worsen after that defeat, with Juve’s official website revealing that Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci had joined the list of absentees. According to that statement, the Brazilian had fractured his left fibula, while the central defender had strained his left thigh and would be sidelined for “between 45 and 60 days.”

While the injuries elsewhere are clearly concerning, it is in defence where the Bianconeri now have the biggest issue. Bonucci and Barzagliwill be unlikely to return to action until the new year, while both MedhiBenatia and Chiellini continually miss matches due to niggling injuries.

The situation has unsurprisingly led to speculation about new signings, with La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football Italia) listing Victor Lindelof of Benfica and Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic as potential targets.

Yet before the transfer window opens, Juventus have a tough run of league and cup matches to end 2016. Next they host high-flying Atalanta, followed by Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, a derby clash with cross-town rivals Torino, a visit from AS Roma and the Supercoppa Italiana against AC Milan in Doha, Qatar.

That would be a tough fixture list even at full strength, but Allegri must plot a way through it using the players he still has at his disposal. Managed carefully, Benatia and Chiellini can most likely alternate in one spot, but the current injury problems have undoubtedly forced Daniele Rugani firmly into the spotlight.

The development of the 22-year-old has been an interesting topic for followers of Italian football ever since he returned to Juve in the summer of 2015. Since then he has made just 26 appearances for the club, with eight of that tally coming as a substitute as the sheer quality of players ahead of him pushed him down the pecking order.

He could certainly have played more often, with Allegri opting to use Martin Caceres, Patrice Evra and Stephan Lichtsteiner ahead of him, but Rugani has also featured in some important matches along the way.

Allegri has used Rugani sparingly thus far.

The young defender did not get his first start until the win over Sampdoria in early January, with an injury to Chiellini then allowing him to play out the season as a regular in the starting XI, including all 120-plus minutes of the Coppa Italia final win over Milan.

It continued into the new campaign, so much so that before September’s meeting with Cagliari, Allegri was forced to discuss the prospects of the former Empoli man seeing some action at his pre-match press conference:

Daniele Rugani will start and we’ll be assessing the condition of MedhiBenatia in the coming days. Daniele has improved a lot since arriving here even if his playing time was relatively low last term.

He has trained very well over the summer and, as I’ve said before, will be an important Juventus player for years to come. Given the number of matches we’ll be playing, you can expect to see lots of Rugani this campaign.

True to his word, the defender lined up on the right of a three-man defence and netted his maiden Juventus goal, smashing home a simple rebound after Marco Storari had done well to deny a volley from Gonzalo Higuain.

Rugani gives his Juve the lead!

“I’m delighted for my first goal, the win and many other reasons,” he told JTV (h/t Football Italia) shortly after the final whistle, and he certainly had many reasons for feeling positive about his first game of the season.

He turned in a sound defensive display as Juve ran out 4-0 winners, proving that he can play with the required intensity and concentration demanded by Allegri, as the FourFourTwo Stats Zone graphic in the tweet below highlights.

Rugani registered one tackle, two interceptions, two clearances and won two aerial duels while also completing 45 of his 50 pass attempts, but he would then suffer his own injury problems.

.@DanieleRugani vs Cagliari: 1 tackle, 2 interceptions, 2 clearances, 2/2 aerial duels, 45/50 passes (90%), 3 fouls (via @StatsZone)

That meant he made it to November with more appearances (two) for the Italian national team than he had at club level (one). However, he was soon thrust back into the starting XI against Pescara and Sevilla, then coming off the bench after Bonucci was taken off in the aforementioned loss to Genoa.

The injury problems have seen Juve robbed of their usual cohesion at the back, making errors and conceding goals at a far higher rate than normal. Constantly forced to change his starting lineup, Allegri has seen the previously stout back line become alarmingly porous, and he now needs Rugani to provide that stability.

Having watched former Italy under-21 team-mate Alessio Romagnolido the same at Milan, Rugani will now be the one anchoring a makeshift defence, and it could well be the making of the Juve man.

Wow, #Juve have a real injury crisis on their hands in defence. Rugani has to step up big time now (just as Romagnoli has done at #Milan).

The circumstances are far from ideal, but these are the chances that great players must seize. Claudio Marchisio was given his back in 2006 when the Bianconeri had fitness problems in midfield, while Gigi Buffon never looked back after Parma lost two goalkeepers to injury before a 1995 game at San Siro.

Rugani, thanks to his two-year loan stint with former club Empoli, has far more experience than both his current team-mates did when their big opportunity arrived. A start against Atalanta on Saturday would mark the 108th first-team appearance of his career, and the Luccanative must ignore the external pressure and deliver his very best.

No, he hasn’t played particularly well this term, and yes, he probably should have featured more over the past 18 months, but none of that matters when he next takes to the field at Juventus Stadium.

“As we know, the expectations on us are huge this year,” he told Sky Italia (h/t Football Italia) in a recent interview. “I’m growing as a player and as a man, all thanks to the greater responsibility and the environment. I’ve made progress, but I still have a lot to learn to become an important part of this team in the future.”

Rugani was absolutely correct in that assessment, but there is now no time to wait. He is not going to be allowed to continue working in the background; the team needs him, and he must stand up and perform immediately.

Part of a squad that contains Barzagli, Bonucci and Chiellini, he was expected to eventually be the heir to that great defence. But the “BBC” is off-air for the foreseeable future, meaning Rugani is now the only show in town.

OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL: Juventus defender

Daniele Rugani extends contract through 2021

-daniele-rugani-extends-contract-through-2021-serie-a-team-news

Dec 14, 2016

The day he stepped up to the podium for his introductory press conference last summer, the smile on Daniele Rugani’s face could not be knocked off even if you slugged him with a 20-pound dumbbell. Even though he was part of Juve’s primavera squad for a season, it was Rugani’s day to tell everybody in the Italian press why he was so happy to be a part the best club Serie A has to offer.

And now, to the surprise of nobody, he’s going to be sticking around much, much longer.

As the clock struck noon in Italy on Wednesday, Juventus announced that they have agreed to a contract extension through the 2020-21 season with the 22-year-old Rugani. Pencilled as both a future star for club and country, Rugani has been rumored to be signing a contract extension for weeks now, with the Italian press reporting that the only thing to be done with the deal is an official announcement from Juventus themselves at some point in the near future.

Well, that official announcement has arrived. Let there be much celebrating.

Ah, yes. The rumors were true — and that’s a very good thing.

Rugani, whose contract was bought in full two years ago after a period of co-ownership with Empoli, has long been thought of as the future of the Juventus defense. His playing time over the past season and a half has not always been the most plentiful at times, but he has certainly shown what he’s capable of pretty much every time he’s called into the lineup by Juventus manager Max Allegri.

Along with Rolando Mandragora, Marko Pjaca and Miralem Pjanic, Rugani joins a small group of players who have their contracts expiring after the 2020-21 season. Whenever Paulo Dybala signs his anticipated contract extension, you’d expect him to join that group that’s locked up for the next five years.

But if you wanted another sign that the Juventus management team think quite highly of Rugani and the future he has at the club, this here contract extension is the latest example. Good work, Juventus. And keep up the good work, Daniele, because you’re good at what you do.

Official: Rugani renews with Juve

http://www.football-italia.net/95675/official-rugani-renews-juve

Dec 14, 2016

Juventus defender Daniele Rugani has signed a contract renewal with the Bianconeri until 2021.

News of the five-year deal was announced today via the club's official website.

The 22-year-old has played a more prominent role for the Bianconeri this season, deputising for injuries to the regular defensive trio of Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

Rugani has also weighed in with three goals in seven starting appearances for the club during the current campaign.

The centreback returned to Turin at the beginning of the 2015-16 season after spending two years on loan at Empoli, where he made a total of 81 appearances for the Tuscan side.

Rugani: 'So proud of Juve renewal'

http://www.football-italia.net/95676/rugani-so-proud-juve-renewal

Dec 14, 2016

Juventus defender Daniele Rugani has revealed his pride in a new five-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2021.

The 22-year-old also spoke about the ways he has improved as a player, and gave credit to former club Empoli for assisting with his development.

"I am proud to have renewed his contract for five years until 2021," the centreback told the Juventus official website.

"This route that I’ve taken gives me great satisfaction. I want to say lots of things about it, it means that the club believes in me, that I'm doing well and I’m happy and proud of this.

"I’m happy because I was born a Juve fan and to extend for five years gives me the greatest satisfaction of all.

"The pressure is always there, including this year because I'm playing more. Now, I’ve found more space but the pressure was also there last year when I had to prove myself.

"What has changed is the maturity and mental awareness that I have gained. This is normal in the development of a player who comes from an exceptional club like Empoli.

"The difference from last year is that I’m able to handle this better and I think I've made progress in this way."

Is the defender pleased with his three goals in the current campaign?

"As a team, we hope to continue, we aren’t the finished product and there are others that are more important than me.

"For a defender it's beautiful to score goals, perhaps even more than an attacker because it doesn’t happen often and it is always wonderful.

"I hope it won’t be my last and that the goals continue to come."

Coach Massimiliano Allegri believes that Rugani will be the future of Juve. What does Rugani think to this?

"What Allegri said to me was beautiful, it gives me enormous pleasure, in the same way that the club has demonstrated confidence in me with this super renewal.

"These are the things that give me so much pleasure.

"My aim is to do what the Coach says: to be an important Juventus defender for the next 10 years.

"The goal is this and I’ll do what it takes to improve in order to reach this point."

Daniele Rugani Isn't the Future of Juventus,

He's Already a Vital Player

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2682511-daniele-rugani

-isnt-the-future-of-juventus-hes-already-a-vital-player

Dec 18, 2016

AS Roma visited Juventus Stadium on Saturday evening, the teams arriving for a top-of-the-table clash with just four points separating them in the Serie A table and with important wins under their belts.

A week earlier, the hosts had overcome a resilient Torino side in a hard-fought local derby, while the Giallorossi had beaten third-place AC Milan in their previous outing. “Our position is easy to explain: this is a fundamental game for us,” Roma boss Luciano Spalletti said at his pre-match press conference. “We can’t go there and look for a draw, we’d lose for sure.”

Despite in-form forward Mohamed Salah only being fit enough for a place on the bench, while Alessandro Florenzi, Bruno Peres and Francesco Totti missed out completely, the coach was certainly true to his word as Kostas Manolas and Daniele De Rossi flew into early challenges.

Yet the game soon followed the usual path of Juve-Roma clashes. The capital club—having lost on their five previous away clashes against the Bianconeri—fell behind after just 14 minutes.

Gonzalo Higuain battled for the ball with De Rossi, eventually leaving the Roma skipper on the ground, evaded Manolas and then fired a shot into the top corner that Wojciech Szczesny was powerless to stop.

The strike marked the Argentina international’s fourth goal in three matches, Higuain rounding into form at a crucial point of the campaign. However, Juventus did not have things their own way, Spalletti’s men rose to the challenge and dominated much of the game.

Salah came on at half-time, adding some much-needed impetus to the attack, while Stephan El Shaarawy was also introduced as Roma chased an equaliser. By the time the final whistle blew, they had controlled 60.2 percent of possession and out-shot Juve 10-7 over the 90+ minutes, according to WhoScored.com.

Full-time: Agonising 1-0 defeat for #ASRoma after visitors enjoyed over 60% of possession and more shots than home side

Not our night.

“Despite the final siege, Roma emerge beaten, and it all becomes more difficult,” Spalletti admitted in a post-game interview with Mediaset Premium (h/t Football Italia). “Juve were stronger than us in the individual duels and proved their strength.”

It was a vital win for the Bianconeri and helped them open a seven-point gap on their closest rivals, but that they did so with an injury-ravaged squad was equally impressive. Andrea Barzagli and Paulo Dybala were deemed not fit enough to start, while long-term absentees Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci missed out completely.

Those players obviously left Massimiliano Allegri short in defence, but the Juve boss was rewarded for his continued faith in Daniele Rugani. Rather than opting for Medhi Benatia, the young Italy international retained his place in the starting XI, delivering a superb performance as time and again he thwarted promising Roma attacks.

As the FourFourTwo Stats Zone graphic in the tweet above highlights, his effort was astonishing against Serie A’s most prolific attack. Their opponents had scored more goals than any other team in the league before this encounter, but Rugani ensured the Bianconeri kept a clean sheet.

It was their first in domestic action since beating Pescara on November 19, and Allegri was happy to single out the young central defender for praise for the work he did alongside Giorgio Chiellini.

Rugani played a very important match and displayed great technique and personality,” the coach told Sky Italia (h/t GianlucaDiMarzio.com). “I believe he can improve even further. He also gives a lot of assurances. The national team and Juventus are lucky to have him.”

Max Allegri was impressed by Rugani.

The player himself was overjoyed with the result, telling Mediaset Premium (h/t Football Italia) that he was “happy with my performance, but above all with the result” before going on to explain further:

With every game I feel more confident, that’s normal for a player. When you are called into action, it helps you to mature.

I feel that I have improved in several areas, but perhaps the most important step was a psychological one. I came from a different level at Empoli and it took the right amount of time to adapt.

He has certainly done that, starting Juve’s last four matches and seemingly getting better every time he steps on the field. They have not been easy fixtures either, also including a win over high-flying Atalanta and a UEFA Champions League triumph over Dinamo Zagreb that helped Juve clinch top spot in their group.

Rugani scored in both those games, and has yet another reason to celebrate this week with Juve rewarding his growth with an improved contract. According to the club’s official website, the 22-year-old penned a deal until June 2021, much to the delight of a self-confessed Juventus supporter.

“I want to say lots of things about it, it means that the club believes in me, that I'm doing well and I’m happy and proud of this,” Rugani said after the announcement, per Football Italia. "I’m happy because I was born a Juve fan and to extend for five years gives me the greatest satisfaction of all.”

Stefano Sturaro agreed a similar deal the following day, with Allegri expressing his own happiness at locking down two talented prospects. He told a press conference that the renewals are “a sign of the club’s vision for the future.”

18 months of rapid development and that's just the start.@DanieleRugani reflects on contract renewal  http://ow.ly/P8e13077agG  #Rugani2021

“They are two young and promising players,” the coach went on to say, adding that Juventus are “looking for them to become the spine of this team for years to come." That was certainly the case on Saturday evening and the Bianconeri will now head to Doha for their Supercoppa Italiana clash with AC Milan.

That gives them their first chance for silverware this term, already safe in the knowledge they will end 2016 at the top of the table in Serie A. Gaining revenge for October’s league loss to the San Siro outfit would be almost as important as collecting the trophy, but the win over Roma also saw them notch an impressive mark.

The Old Lady have collected 100 points in the calendar year and registered their 25th consecutive domestic victory at Juventus Stadium, the latter accomplishment equalling a club record set just two years earlier.

Many players have played their part in that incredible run of form, but few are playing to the same level as Rugani at the moment. Back in April, Opta noted in this tweet that he collected the first booking of his career, incredibly managing to make 52 full appearances without being shown a yellow card.

“The coach has often told me to become more aggressive, not more dirty,” Rugani told Tuttosport (h/t Football Italia) last term, and he certainly accepted that advice. His instincts have become more finely tuned, his desire to have an impact on matches now much greater and he is no longer the squeaky-clean player he was at Empoli.

Previously expected to wait a while for a sustained run in the side, he showed against Roma that his time has already arrived. Rugani is better, he is part of the side and he is more than just the Juventus defender of tomorrow—he’s performing now, when the team so desperately need him to.

Arsenal rebuffed for Rugani

http://www.football-italia.net/99012/arsenal-rebuffed-rugani

Feb 28, 2017

Arsenal reportedly asked Juventus once again for centre-back Daniele Rugani, but he is considered the future of the Bianconeri.

Arsene Wenger’s interest in Rugani is no secret, just as Maurizio Sarri tried repeatedly to bring the former Empoli defender to Napoli.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Gunners gave it another go recently with another approach to see if Rugani would be available either in January or over the summer.

It’s claimed Arsenal were prepared to pay up to €30m to get Rugani in the squad.

However, Juventus have no intention of letting him go, seeing the 22-year-old as the future of their back line.

He already has two senior Italy caps and this season scored three goals in 16 competitive appearances.

Arsenal had £25.7m Daniele Rugani bid rejected?

news/arsenal-had-gbp257m-rugani-bid-rejected_292841.html

Mar 1, 2017

Arsenal reportedly saw a bid of €30m (£25.7m) turned down by Juventus for centre-back Daniele Rugani in January.

The 22-year-old has been on the Gunners' radar for some time, with manager Arsene Wenger said to be "very interested" in the youngster despite his limited playing time for the Old Lady since his £3.4m switch from Empoli in 2013.

According to Calcio Mercato, Arsenal made a fresh offer for the Italy international earlier this year but were rejected as Juve consider him to be "untouchable" and "the future of the side".

Everton had a bid for Rugani turned down last summer, while Juve's Serie A rivals Napoli also mounted an unsuccessful bid for his services.

Rugani, who has made 11 league starts this season, is under contract at the Juventus Stadium until 2021.

Daniele Rugani looks forward to starting for Italy in the Netherlands, but accepts “the journey I must make at Juventus to become a big player.”

The defender is expected to partner Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli, his former Italy Under-21 international, in Tuesday’s friendly in Amsterdam.

“It is an important friendly against a strong team with a lot of quality,” said Rugani in his Press conference.

“We above all need this chance to improve our understanding and get used to the right movements, both as individuals and as a unit.”

While Romagnoli is a regular at Milan, Rugani struggles to get much playing time at Juventus.

“I’ve been here for two years, I know my situation, I know the journey I must take and the difficulties I must overcome to become a big player.

“When I come to the Nazionale, I feel the Coach and my teammates have full faith in me.”

Juve's Rugani suffers knee injury

Juventus defender Daniele Rugani has been sidelined with an injury to his right knee.

The 22-year-old has made 15 Serie A appearances for the Old Lady this season, scoring twice, but did not feature in Friday evening's 2-2 draw with Atalanta.

The Italian champions have since begun preparations for Wednesday evening's Champions League semi-final first-leg against French side Monaco, but they will have to do without their young centre-back for the foreseeable future.

"Due to persistent bruising on his right knee, today Daniele Rugani has been subjected to testing," a statement on Juve's official website reads.

"It has highlighted the presence of a cortical violation at the top of the peroneal bone.

"The player will be assessed and monitored in the coming weeks."

Juve reject Rugani-N’Zonzi swap?

http://www.football-italia.net/104482/juve-reject-rugani-nzonzi-swap

Jun 21, 2017

Juventus have reportedly rejected an offer from Sevilla to swap midfielder Steven N’Zonzi for defender Daniele Rugani.

According to Tuttosport, Juve “will never give up” Rugani, whom they consider “very important for the present and future” and who “has no price”.

However, the newspaper believes Sevilla’s desire for an exchange is a sign that they are willing to ease up on their demands of €40m – N’Zonzi’s release clause.

One player who could swap Turin for Andalusia, however, is Mario Lemina.

The former Olympique Marseille midfielder joined Juve in the summer of 2015 but was also said to be a target for Sevilla.

Rugani: 'Juve always criticised'

http://www.football-italia.net/107926/rugani-juve-always-criticised

Aug 9, 2017

Daniele Rugani is focused on the Italian Super Cup against Lazio, but notes “it’s natural to receive criticism, because we are Juventus.”

The Bianconeri face Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening in the Italian Super Cup.

“The first trophy of the season is up for grabs and it will certainly be a difficult game, a one-off, a Final,” the defender told Sky Sport Italia and Mediaset Premium.

“We have to prepare well and the objective is to win, because we really care about taking this trophy home.”

Juve have been somewhat shaky in pre-season, losing 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley last week.

“It’s only natural to receive criticism, because we are Juventus. We’ve got all eyes on us, far more than at any other club. This keeps us on our toes and helps us to always improve.

“This is certainly an important year for me and I will try to keep growing.”

Arsenal ready Rugani bid?

http://www.football-italia.net/114647/arsenal-ready-rugani-bid

Dec 21, 2017

Arsenal have reportedly preparing a €40m bid for Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani.

According to Calciomercato.com via Mundo Deportivo, Arsenal are keen on bringing in Rugani to bolster their defence, which has come in for criticism this season.

The website adds “it’s difficult but not impossible” for the 23-year-old to leave Juve next month.

Rugani has made 13 appearances in 2017-18 to date but finds himself behind Medhi Benatia, Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli in the Bianconeri’s pecking order, while he also faces competition from Benedikt Howedes and – as of next season – Mattia Caldara.

The Old Lady have rejected offers for Rugani in the past, with Calciomercato concluding their management is of the belief that “there’s no-one better coming through in Italy.”

Agent: 'Top European clubs like Rugani'

https://www.football-italia.net/117468/agent-top-european-clubs-rugani

Feb 20, 2018

Arsenal are interested in Juventus defender Daniele Rugani and his agent confirms “various top European clubs follow him. Some are English.”

The 23-year-old gets very little playing time in Turin, as Medhi Benatia has emerged as the first choice back-up to Andrea Barzagli.

This has fuelled reports of a summer exit, especially if the Bianconeri get Stefan de Vrij as a free agent from Lazio.

There are English reports that Arsene Wenger is a big admirer of the former Empoli centre-back and is preparing a £25m summer swoop.

“Rugani is an international player. He could play in any league, so also in the UK,” agent Davide Torchia told The Sun.

“He’s young. Elegant in the way of playing. I know that various top European clubs follow him. Some are English.

“Arsenal? In the past, some seasons ago, we spoke with them. At the moment there is no official contact with them.

“He is happy at Juventus. He does not want to leave Turin. And he hopes to play continuously. However, if they were to receive a big offer for him, maybe he could be sold.”

Napoli made several massive offers for Rugani over the last couple of years, as he first shot to fame playing in Maurizio Sarri’s Empoli.

The then Under-21 international also set a record by playing every Serie A game in one season without picking up a single yellow card.

Daniele Rugani: 'My goal is to improve at Juventus'

https://www.sportsmole.co.uk/football/juventus/news/rugani-my-goal-is-to-improve-at-juve_319227.html

Feb 22, 2018

Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani has backed himself to improve and gain more minutes for the club following a string of recent impressive displays.

The young defender shone at the back for the Old Lady as they edged past Torino last weekend, leading Rugani to insist that he now wants to play a bigger role in Massimiliano Allegri's side this term.

"Personally, this year's goal is to improve, play more and have a bigger role in the team as I hope to help us win more trophies. Of course for the team, our goal is to win every competition," Rugani told the club's official website.

"Serie A is the main goal, but so is Coppa Italia and Champions League. We're still alive in all three competitions and will do our best going forward. The next 20 days will be a huge part of the season."

Agent: ‘Rugani unsellable for Juventus’

https://www.football-italia.net/122490/agent-‘rugani-unsellable-juventus’

Jun 5, 2018

Daniele Rugani’s agent assures Juventus “have never considered selling him” and saw this season as “very positive”.

The centre-back was seen as one of Italy’s most promising defenders, but he’s failed to find a regular place in the Bianconeri starting XI since moving from Empoli.

That has led to rumours he could be moved on this summer, especially with Mattia Caldara joining from Atalanta.

“It’s been a very positive season for Daniele,” Davide Torchia insisted, speaking to TuttoJuve.

“He’s played more than 1000 minutes in the league and made 26 appearances [in all competitions] including 25 as a starter.

“That’s something that should be emphasised, because there’s a lot of rotation at Juventus. It’s a nice improvement compared to the previous season, there are margins to be able to do better next year.

“At Juventus it’s not enough just to be a good defender, you always have to do more. Playing it forward quickly is something Daniele is working on, as well as launching attacks and changes on the pitch.

“He’s at a good level, but there are margins to improve further.

“Juventus have always considered him unsellable an have never considered selling him.

“The club are very satisfied, they have great respect for the lad and don’t want to deprive themselves of his football qualities.

“Lazio? No, he’s never been offered to any team. If the Bianconeri wanted to sell him, they’ve had plenty of opportunities to do so over these three years.”

Rugani agent: 'No Chelsea talks'

https://www.football-italia.net/122994/rugani-agent-no-chelsea-talks

Jun 14, 2018

Daniele Rugani’s agent denies reports the Juventus defender has been offered to Chelsea or Lazio. “No formal offers have arrived.”

There were already existing rumours that Rugani was heading to Chelsea, especially if their new Coach was his old Empoli boss Maurizio Sarri.

When Davide Torchia was spotted meeting with Juve director of sport Fabio Paratici in Milan today, it further fuelled the reports.

“I know that nobody will believe me, but I met with Paratici because it was already scheduled. I didn’t know there was going to be this storm the day before,” agent Torchia told Sportitalia.

“We talked about how to improve the player and what to do going forward, but we didn’t set up any negotiations.”

There were suggestions Rugani had been proposed to Lazio as part of the bid for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

“Absolutely not, Daniele has never been offered to anyone, let alone Lazio. We can’t say for sure in life that the player is off the market completely, but we can confirm no formal offers have arrived.

“He is happy to be there and Juve are happy with him. It was purely a coincidence we had this meeting after those reports. I can assure you we did not talk about Chelsea.”

‘More than €40m’ for Rugani?

https://www.football-italia.net/123009/more-40m-rugani

Jun 15, 2018

Juventus are reportedly demanding ‘more than €40m’ for Chelsea target Daniele Rugani.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Maurizio Sarri ‘dreams’ of reuniting with Rugani at Chelsea but could be priced out of a deal for the defender.

This is because only an offer in excess of €40m would tempt Juve into a sale, with the 23-year-old’s agent already affirming there are conditions for both to prolong their relationship.

Sarri gave Rugani his professional breakthrough with Empoli in 2013, before he debuted with Juve’s first team two years later.

Chelsea want Rugani

https://www.football-italia.net/123256/chelsea-want-rugani

Jun 20, 2018

Reports in Italy suggest Chelsea want Daniele Rugani, but Juventus won’t let him go for less than €30m.

The Blues look set to appoint Maurizio Sarri as Coach, and he worked with the centre-back during their time at Empoli.

According to SportItalia, the tactician has made it clear that he wants Rugani, and Chelsea are prepared to offer close to €35m.

The defender has already agreed in principle on a contract worth €3.5m per season, but any decisive move will have to wait until Sarri is officially appointed.

Corriere dello Sport concurs that the English side are interested, but that there has been no offer and Juve will demand at least €30m.

Chelsea ready to meet Rugani price

https://www.football-italia.net/123335/chelsea-ready-meet-rugani-price

Jun 21, 2018

Chelsea could be prepared to meet the Juventus asking price of €35-40m for defender Daniele Rugani, it’s reported.

It’s no secret that Rugani is a favourite of Coach Maurizio Sarri, who already worked with him at Empoli, and he tried to sign him repeatedly at Napoli.

According to Calcionews24.com, the Stamford Bridge side are ready to pay €35m plus bonuses to get the centre-back.

He turns 24 next month and is considered the future of the Italy back line along with Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli.

Rugani is eager to make the transfer, because he received precious little playing time under Juve Coach Max Allegri.

This season, he had 26 competitive games, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

Rugani to Chelsea done

https://www.football-italia.net/124259/report-rugani-chelsea-done

Jul 10, 2018

Chelsea have reportedly agreed a €40m deal with Juventus for Daniele Rugani, at the request of incoming Coach Maurizio Sarri.

The defender worked with the former Napoli boss at Empoli, and was considered to be one of the most promising defenders in Italy.

However, he has failed to earn a regular starting spot in Turin, and Premium Sport is now reporting that a deal is done with the Blues.

The Premier League side will pay €40m to sign Rugani, having been pushed to do so by Sarri.

That would also seem to indicate that Chelsea are finally close to agreeing a compensation package with Napoli to release the Coach from his contract.

Juventus do not want to sell Rugani

https://www.football-italia.net/124572/asamoah-will-retire-inter-rugani

Jul 16, 2018

Agent Davide Torchia warns Chelsea that Juventus ‘have never shown willingness’ to sell Daniele Rugani.

“Rugani to Chelsea? I’m happy for Sarri because no-one thought he could get there and now here he is coaching Chelsea.

“It’s a great victory for everyone, even for Napoli it was crucial. Then, given how highly he rates Rugani, everyone thinks he can follow him to Chelsea.

“However, it must be remembered that Juventus also didn’t accept any negotiations in the past, neither with Napoli nor with any other team, and they’ve always shown willingness to keep the player. That will hasn’t changed.

“Rugani himself hasn’t expressed willingness to go elsewhere, but it must also be said that if there’s an offered, it’ll be listened to becauset there’s respect in football.

“Ronaldo? Him going to Juventus doesn’t make Serie A a given for them. The deal is incredible for the growth of Italian football.

“However, despite being a great champion, Ronaldo has won everything except the League this season, so there’s nothing for granted.”
