Juventus director Beppe Marotta reiterated they want to carry on with Max Allegri. “When I say there’s unity, that includes the coaching staff.”

The Bianconeri visit Sampdoria today at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

“It’s a difficult game in a difficult arena and we need determination to get the points,” Marotta told Mediaset Premium.

“Over a season there are moments of heightened form and moments of normality, but players like Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala also support the team and goals are not the only duty.”

Headlines were dominated yesterday by news Juventus and President Andrea Agnelli were deferred to the Disciplinary Commission over regular meetings with ultras groups, who may well have included two men linked to organised crime.

“The President expressed two important concepts: that Juventus were totally unaware of this situation and that the club remains united, eager to continue getting important results,” added Marotta.

“When I mean unity of intents, I also mean the coaching staff, so therefore Allegri.”

The Bianconeri are in the Champions League quarter-finals against Barcelona.

“Football is beautiful because it is unpredictable. We are Juventus, so Barcelona have every reason to be as worried to be facing us as we do for them. We both have the utmost respect and no fear.”

Juan Cuadrado’s rare header has given Juventus the half-time lead away to Sampdoria, but Paulo Dybala went off injured.

The Bianconeri were in no mood to take chances and kept squad rotation to an absolute minimum after reaching the Champions League quarter-finals with victory over Porto midweek. Stefano Sturaro and Medhi Benatia missed out with Giorgio Chiellini and Claudio Marchisio not 100 per cent fit, Leonardo Bonucci rested to avoid a ban ahead of Napoli. Sampdoria were also brimming with confidence following their Derby della Lanterna triumph, though Christian Puggioni stepped in for suspended goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.

The Blucerchiati had managed just one point from their previous seven meetings with Juve, home and away, since a 3-2 win here in May 2013.

It was a fast and furious start at Marassi, as Fabio Quagliarella’s angled drive flashed across the face of goal to go inches wide, but moments later Kwadwo Asamoah whipped in a cross from the left for Juan Cuadrado’s rare header from five yards, having snuck up in front of Vasco Regini.

Juve had a series of shots charged down inside the box in a pinball move, then Gonzalo Higuain spun round on the spot after a Karol Linetty error, forcing Puggioni’s save from point-blank range.

The Bianconeri were dominant, but lost Paulo Dybala to a muscular problem, so Marko Pjaca came on in his place. After this switch, Samp started to gain confidence.

Gigi Buffon spilled a Bruno Fernandes volley and did well to scramble on to the loose ball, while Pjaca’s angled drive was fingertipped past the far post and Higuain tested the goalkeeper with a solo run.

Sampdoria 0 Juventus 1: Cuadrado

strike ends Samp run

Sampdoria's run of seven Serie A matches without defeat

came to an end with a 1-0 reverse against Juventus.

Juventus put the brakes on Sampdoria's Serie A resurgence with a straightforward 1-0 win at Stadio Luigi Ferraris despite losing Paulo Dybala to injury.

Samp were unbeaten in seven when the champions arrived in Genova, but Juan Cuadrado's first-half goal gave Massimiliano Allegri's men an early lead that they protected for 83 minutes without being unduly troubled by their hosts.

Dybala broke down just before the half-hour mark with an apparent thigh injury and Allegri did not hesitate to replace the influential forward, who could miss Argentina's forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia depending on the extent of the problem.

Juve will use the international break to prepare for a hectic month in April, when they face Napoli in Serie A and the Coppa Italia, as well as Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final, and Allegri will hope the confident, resolute approach seen on Sunday is still in evidence by then.

Samp coach Marco Giampaolo saw his side offer up a spirited display, but the clinical manner in which the game was effectively won inside the opening 10 minutes showed the gulf in class between the two sides.

Juve showed no signs of fatigue amid a busy run of league, cup and Champions League fixtures and they took the lead after seven minutes of a high-tempo opening to the game.

Kwadwo Asamoah sent over a wickedly curling cross from the left and Samp captain Vasco Regini could not prevent Cuadrado from plundering the ball into the net with a flying header and claiming his second Serie A goal of the season.

Cuadrado was in mischievous mood and the hosts struggled to deal with his jinking runs down the right flank. He twice fed Gonzalo Higuain for close-range chances, but goalkeeper Christian Puggioni saved both of the burly striker's attempts.

Everything was going Juve's way until the talismanic Dybala, who had scored four goals in his previous four games, went down holding his thigh after 28 minutes and had to be replaced by Marko Pjaca, but the visitors withstood a number of attacks before Higuain drew another excellent save from Puggioni on the cusp of half-time.

The home side started the second half with more energy about them and Fabio Quagliarella sent a dipping shot towards the far corner of the net, but Gianluigi Buffon was equal to it.

Giampaolo sent on Czech striker Patrik Schick as he sought to ignite his attack and the 21-year-old might have levelled the game from close range had it not been for Asamoah's superb tackle.

Schick was later withdrawn with a knock and replaced by Filip Djuricic, but Samp had run out of steam by the final 15 minutes and Dennis Praet's pass across the face of goal ran loose with no player in a blue shirt there to meet it.

Dani Alves was booked for his part in a clash with Regini in the dying minutes, but the incident only served to help Juve close out the game and claim another three points towards their bid for another title.

Key Opta Facts:

- Juventus are unbeaten in their last 10 Serie A games (W9 D1).

- Juve have gained 13 points in their last five away Serie A games, after they gained six in the previous five.

- Kwadwo Asamoah delivered his first assist in this Serie A season : the last one was against Carpi in May 2016.

- Juve have scored the most goals in the first 15 minutes of play in this Serie A campaign (12).

Juventus' bid to win a sixth consecutive Serie A title took a hit on Sunday, as star forward Paulo Dybala suffered an injury in the match against Sampdoria

According to Football Italia, he came off the pitch with a muscle injury:

The Argentina international moved to Turin from Palermo in the summer of 2015 and quickly erased memories of Carlos Tevez, becoming a pivotal part of the Bianconeri attack. With his clever movement, dribbling ability and excellent vision, he proved a nightmare to defend.

The arrivals of Gonzalo Higuain and Miralem Pjanic in the summer of 2016 meant the 23-year-old had to adjust to a new role, as he was no longer the team's main creative outlet or scoring option, but he continued to be a nuisance for virtually every team he faced.

Juventus also invested in Dinamo Zagreb's Marko Pjaca last summer, a player with similar traits as Dybala who has been used as the Argentinian's main substitute, but the young Croat lacks the experience and explosiveness to fully replicate what Dybala brings to the table.

Dybala missed time earlier during the season due to injury, and manager Massimiliano Allegri gave more playing time to Mario Mandzukic in a central role, with star youngster Moise Kean earning a spot on the bench. While Mandzukic held his own, his partnership with Higuain never took off, and Jventus sorely missed Dybala's creativity and ability to run at defenders.

Even without Dybala, Juventus should remain a dominant force in Italy, where no team has come close to breaking their stranglehold on the title race for years. But the club invested in the likes of Higuain and Pjanic with an eye on European success, where Dybala's loss will be keenly felt.

Fortunately for the Bianconeri, Dybala was able to leave the pitch under his own strength. With an international break on the horizon, he might recover in time for the all-important UEFA Champions League tie against Barcelona.

In the meantime, Higuain and Mandzukic will be asked to carry the scoring load once again, while Pjanic will be looked at even more to create openings for his team-mates. Teen starlet Kean could also see more playing time.

Juan Cuadrado's seventh-minute goal helped Juventus preserve their dominant lead at the top of the Serie A table while ending Sampdoria's unbeaten run.

The 1-0 victory at the Marassi means Juve are once again 10 points clear of Napoli, who beat Empoli earlier on Sunday, with only nine games of the season remaining.

Chelsea loanee Cuadrado missed last week's victory over AC Milan but featured in the Champions League win over Porto, and that 45-minute outing put the energy in his legs he needed to race in behind the Samp back line and nod in a sumptuous Kwadwo Asamoah cross.

The Blucerchiati, who had won five and drawn two of their last seven games, offered little attacking threat but proved hard to break down, and they head into the international break occupying a comfortable ninth-place berth in the league.

Former Juve striker Fabio Quagliarella gave his old employers an early fright when he fizzed an angled drive past the far post in the sixth minute.

It was a false dawn for Samp, though, as the visitors responded by taking the lead. Asamoah's rainbow cross skipped into Cuadrado's trajectory and, after the flying Colombian dropped a shoulder to get past Vasco Regini, he headed the ball home from inside the six-yard box.

Juve almost doubled their lead when Mario Mandzukic aimed a boot at goalkeeper Christian Puggioni's poor clearance, but Bianconeri hitman Gonzalo Higuain accidentally blocked the shot on the goal-line.

Puggioni stood tall to deny Higuain with a fine stop some moments later and, on the brink of half-time, the former Chievo keeper leapt across his goal to punch the Argentinian's venomous left-footed effort to safety.

There was little to write home about in the second half, but shortly after the hour mark Gianluigi Buffon reached a personal milestone. The 39-year-old keeper became the Juve player with the most Serie A minutes -- 39,681 to be precise -- when the 65th minute ticked by.

An injury suffered by Samp's regular impact substitute Patrik Schick forced his premature removal, taking the sting out of their game plan and convincing Juve they could sleepwalk towards the three points.

They were nearly punished for their apathy when Dennis Praet got loose down the right before pinging a cross into the box that would have found the back of the net had any teammate made contact with it.

Praet, the Belgian winger, then caused more trouble for the Bianconeri when he picked out Quagliarella in a shooting position, but the wily forward shot over.

Juan Cuadrado’s rare header proved enough for Juventus to grab all three points and end Sampdoria’s positive run, but Paulo Dybala went off injured.

The Blucerchiati were more aggressive after the break and Buffon took the sting out of a Quagliarella curler, then the veteran’s cross flew just over the head of Luis Muriel.

Buffon set a new club record, as on 39,681 Serie A minutes he had played more than any Juventus player in history.

Samp supersub Patrik Schick didn’t last long, as he limped off again with an ankle injury, but Quagliarella’s overhead kick wasn’t far off target.

Allegri was stalking the touchline in a full-on rage for the entire final 10 minutes, including in stoppages when Vasco Regini nodded over from a corner.

There is just something about international breaks that makes me think about cliches. Maybe it’s the fact that my brain doesn’t want to cope with no Juventus for the next two weeks and just thinks up default answers. But when it comes to the game before the international break, I want Juventus to win and I want them to play well. It’s simple and relatively cliche, I know, and that’s just the reality of it all. Nobody wants to sit on a crappy performance and a loss for 13 or 14 days. That just doesn’t sound like any fun.

Juventus, much to its credit, were more than willing to oblige.

A free-flowing and open first half was followed up by a much more defensive-minded second 45 minutes by the current Serie A leaders. Juventus made Juan Cuadrado’s seventh-minute header stand for the rest of the way and claimed a 1-0 win over pesky Sampdoria at the Luigi Ferraris on Sunday afternoon to momentarily push the lead atop the league standings to 10 points. (Roma plays later in the day against Sassuolo.)

Oh, yeah. There was a little bit of history taking place, too.

I’ll chalk it up as a solid win at a place that has given Juve its fair amount of troubles over the years. And when you throw in a Samp side that was pretty much pressing high from the first whistle onward and Juventus really had to be on their game to pick up all three points.

Once Cuadrado headed home Kwadwo Asamoah’s cross from the left wing, Juventus were in line to do just that. Some 80-something minutes later, that’s exactly what happened.

Now Juventus head into the international break knowing they’re another step closer to wrapping up a sixth straight Scudetto. Allegri said at his pre-match press conference that the main goal remains winning the league title — which is fine with me when you consider that the sooner they wrap this thing up, the sooner they can put their full attention toward what’s going on in Europe. Seeing as the lead in Serie A has been bouncing between seven and 10 points in recent weeks, it’s bound to happen in relatively short order after the international break.

So keep on working your way to that title, Juventus. It took another 1-0 win to get there, but Allegri seems to like those just fine. I guess we should be used to it by now.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Thought about 30 minutes before kickoff (and yes, this is a thought that is going through my head at 6:30 in the morning here in California): “HOLY CRAP DANIELE RUGANI ACTUALLY GETS TO START A GAME.” There you go, kids. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who had that thought when they first saw the starting lineups.
  • Thought about two minutes before kickoff as the Serie A anthem sounds over the loudspeakers at the Marassi: Fabio Quagliarella is forever tan, forever cleft-chinned.
  • Thought in the 27th minute as Paulo Dybala walked off the field with some kind of muscle injury (in his thigh?): PLEASE PLEASE DON’T BE HURT AND A LOT MISS TIME. NOT THE RIGHT TIME, PAULO. (Also, it’s a good thing the international break is here.)
  • Thought around the 60th minute when the announcers actually mentioned it: “Wait, Sampdoria has only had six players score goals this season?” A check on the old internet has confirmed this to be true.
  • Considering the situation, this is one of the few times this season I have not been happy to see Marko Pjaca step onto the field. Nothing against Marko, obviously, but every one of my thoughts as the substitution happened was about Dybala and what the hell could be wrong.
  • Can we officially say that Kwadwo Asamoah has found a home as a full-time left back? Because I feel like can say that Kwadwo Asamoah has found a home as a full-time left back who can do a thing or two backing up Alex Sandro.
  • And because it deserves its own bullet point: Asamoah’s cross on Cuadrado’s goal was an absolute thing of beauty. Spun it into the danger zone like he was Alex Sandro.
  • For the first 12-15 minutes, I can’t remember a time recently where all four attacking players in Juventus’ 4-2-3-1 were as interchangeable and all over the field like they were. Cuadrado popped up on the right wing one attack, then was suddenly on the left moments later. Dybala was dropping back to defend, then trying to split through two Samp defenders right outside the 18-yard box on the right wing. Free-flowing football, that’s for sure. It was a beauty to watch.
  • Maybe he’s a guy who needs a rest. Maybe he’s a guy who has dipped into a bit of a scoring slump. Maybe it’s both. But when it comes to Gonzalo Higuain, he’s a guy who is definitely not looking like his normal lethal self in front of goal these days. He had three REALLY good chances against Sampdoria and couldn’t convert on any one of them. He’s now scored in just one of his last seven appearances in all competitions, which is obviously a very un-Higuain-like kind of run. Maybe he can stay behind during the international break and play board games with Dybala and his girlfriend instead of running around for the Argentina national team.
  • Fabio Quagliarella tried a couple of those classic Quag shots and Gigi Buffon just wasn’t having any of it.
  • I’ll leave you all with this thought: Watching Rugani play is a joy. He is so calm, so smooth with whatever he does you tend to forget that he hadn’t started a game in weeks and that he’s still just 22 years old. What a player he already is and will develop into whenever he becomes a regular starter in the heart of Juve’s defense.

Allegri: 'Juve made me angry'

Max Allegri explained his absolutely furious touchline antics towards the end of the 1-0 Juventus victory away to Sampdoria.

Juan Cuadrado’s diving header proved the only goal of the game at Marassi, but in the final 10 minutes Allegri was stalking the sidelines and screaming at his players.

“I got angry because in those situations you just need to be organised, keep your shape and play on the counter when the opposition is forced to take the initiative,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia and Mediaset Premium.

“In the first half they went down five times and we put the ball out of play for treatment, then as soon as they came back in, they didn’t give it back. You’ve got to learn quickly, then!

“If one of our players is down, put the ball out. Fair play is all well and good, but there’s no need to be naïve, otherwise you may as well go on the PlayStation.

“These three points are a step forward, it was important to win today because after the break for international duty we’ve got a really tough fixture list.

“The lads had one of our best first half performances of the season, playing well and creating many chances, but we couldn’t maintain the tempo and were disorganised in the second half.”

There was tension early on, as Paulo Dybala went off with a muscular problem.

“It doesn’t seem to be anything serious, he felt the thigh muscle harden and had been feeling that for a few days, so we decided not to risk it.

“It’s normal to feel tiredness after such a long season and we should’ve controlled the ball better in the second half, therefore saving ourselves energy in chasing it down.

“The important thing is not to take anything for granted.”

Allegri was also asked about his future with Juventus and was far from reassuring.

“I have an excellent rapport with the club. At the right moment I’ll be called in and they’ll let me know what they intend to do.

Marco Giampaolo felt Sampdoria had “a very European attitude” and caused serious problems for Juventus, despite the 1-0 defeat.

The game was decided by an early Juan Cuadrado diving header, though the Blucerchiati piled on the pressure in the final 15 minutes.

“We were probably a little imprecise in the final third and couldn’t find the right move to score a goal,” Giampaolo told Sky Sport Italia.

“A defeat is never positive, even if it was against the Serie A leaders. Fabio Quagliarella is very motivated and the whole team had a very European attitude, focusing on the attack. There was no point sitting back and defending, because we’d concede eventually anyway.

“Our mission today was to keep the game open until the 95th minute and that is what we did. In fact, Vasco Regini had the chance to equalise in stoppages.

“We were unlucky on the goal, because I’ve never seen Cuadrado with a header before…”

Gigi Buffon “hopes to wear the Juventus jersey for a good while yet” and trusts Italy “will soon have the strongest squad in 20 years.”

The goalkeeper made history today, as with 39,711 Serie A minutes he played more than any other Juventus man, surpassing Giampiero Boniperti.

“I am honoured to have been able to wear the Juventus jersey for such a long time and I hope to continue wearing it for a good while yet,” Buffon told Sky Sport Italia.

Today we met a Sampdoria side in good shape that has a clear idea of its football and good youth. It was fundamental we get the victory and we did, even if we had to fight for it.”

Now the Bianconeri can go into the break for international duty, but when they return there’ll be two trips to Napoli for Serie A and the Coppa Italia semi-final, then the Champions League quarter-final with Barcelona.

“It is wonderful to take part in a challenge like this. In all honesty, playing home and away legs is far more difficult, because in a one-off match anything can happen.

“I cannot say what will happen to me in the future, but I have some short-term objectives and I’m eager to achieve them.”

Next Friday, Italy host Albania in a World Cup qualifier at the Stadio Barbera in Palermo, then visit Holland for a friendly.

“I think from 2020 to 2028 we will have the best Nazionale of the last 20 years. They must be helped to grow and mature in the best way, but the talent is there.”

Juventus won 1-0 at Sampdoria in a close encounter that they fully controlled in the first half, and then had some nervy moments to deal with as the home crowd cheered on the Blucerchiati.

After the game, manager Massimiliano Allegri explained his incensed antics on the sidelines, especially towards the end of the game.

“I got angry because in those situations you just need to be organised, keep your shape and play on the counter when the opposition is forced to take the initiative.

“In the first half they went down five times and we put the ball out of play for treatment, then as soon as they came back in, they didn’t give it back. You’ve got to learn quickly, then!

“If one of our players is down, put the ball out. Fair play is all well and good, but there’s no need to be naïve, otherwise you may as well go on the PlayStation.”

With the win Juve are now ten points ahead of Napoli, but a win for Roma later today could push them back into second eight points behind the Bianconeri.

“These three points are a step forward, it was important to win today because after the break for international duty we’ve got a really tough fixture list.

“The lads had one of our best first half performances of the season, playing well and creating many chances, but we couldn’t maintain the tempo and were disorganised in the second half.”

Key player Paulo Dybala went off with what looked like a thigh injury.

Once again Allegri was asked about his future with the club.

“I have an excellent rapport with the club. At the right moment I’ll be called in and they’ll let me know what they intend to do.”

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said his side's 1-0 victory at Sampdoria was "an important step" on their road to making Serie A history.

The reigning champions moved 10 points clear of second-placed Napoli thanks to Juan Cuadrado's seventh-minute goal at the Marassi.

But they found their opponents difficult to break down and almost conceded a late leveller.

Allegri's men look increasingly likely to clinch an historic sixth straight Scudetto.

He told the official Juventus website: "It was an important step forward. We played a great first half, among the best halves we've played this season.

"In the second half, however, we were a bit distracted and suffered on some fast counter-attacks from them when we should have been able to avoid danger.

"Some days you just have to get through it, and this was one of those days."

r191736_1296x729_16-9.jpg&w=738&site=esp
Massimiliano Allegri saw his side move 10 points clear.

Juventus face Barcelona in the quarterfinals of the Champions League in April and Allegri said: "Playing in games like this should be the norm for us.

"We might get past them, we might go out, but Juventus should not consider these types of matches to be exceptional events."

Sampdoria head coach Marco Giampaolo, who has never tasted victory over Juve in his career as a Serie A coach, told Sky Sport Italia: "Losing is never good, even if you're losing to a team as good as Juventus.

"But I liked what the team did today -- we had the right attitude, we were proactive."

Juan Cuadrado's seventh-minute goal helped Juventus preserve their dominant lead at the top of the Serie A table while ending Sampdoria's unbeaten run.

The Chelsea loanee raced in behind the defence and nodded in a sumptuous Kwadwo Asamoah cross, not long before Paulo Dybala limped off injured.

The 1-0 victory at the Marassi means Juve are once again eight points clear of Roma - who beat Sassuolo later on Sunday - while Napoli's earlier triumph over Empoli leaves them 10 points off the title pace.

Sampdoria, who had won five and drawn two of their last seven games, offered little attacking threat but proved hard to break down, and they head into the international break occupying a comfortable ninth-place berth in the league.

The late game saw Roma respond to Juve's result and soothe their Europa League hangover by downing Sassuolo 3-1 in the capital.

Gregoire Defrel gave the lowly northerners a surprise ninth-minute lead but Leandro Paredes soon restored parity and Mohamed Salah struck in first-half stoppage time to turn the game around. Midway through the second period, Bosnian substitute Edin Dzeko reached 21 goals for the 2016-17 campaign.

In the lunchtime kick-off, Napoli had resisted a late fightback from lowly Empoli to win 3-2.

Lorenzo Insigne followed up his brace against Crotone with another double, the Italy striker opening the scoring and then converting a penalty after Dries Mertens had notched in spectacular style to reach 20 league goals. The Belgian had earlier seen his spot-kick saved by Lukasz Skorupski.

Empoli then rallied, with Omar El Kaddouri spoiling the clean sheet before veteran substitute Massimo Maccarone scored a late penalty.

Lazio had an opportunity to close the gap on third when they visited Cagliari but the Sardinians held them to a goalless draw.

Atalanta are also targeting a lofty finishing position and had no such worries in front of goal when they trounced basement boys Pescara 3-0 in Bergamo.

Argentinian forward Alejandro Gomez both opened and closed the scoring, first converting Hans Hateboer's 13th-minute assist and then rubber-stamping the outcome in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, as Alberto Grassi had notched in between times for the sixth-placed side.

Fiorentina needed a last-gasp goal from Nikola Kalinic at Crotone to record a 1-0 victory that keeps their dream of securing European football alive.

Elsewhere, Bologna banished any lingering fears of relegation by pulling 19 points clear of the drop zone with a 4-1 home win over Chievo.

The Rossoblu had to recover from behind to claim their best result since December as Lucas Castro had put the visiting Flying Donkeys ahead five minutes before half-time.

When play resumed, Bologna let rip, with Simone Verdi equalising before Blerim Dzemaili bagged a brace, leaving substitute Federico Di Francesco to add the gloss.

Palermo were pushed closer to the dreaded drop by Udinese, who beat them by the same scoreline at the Dacia Arena.

Again the visitors took the lead, with Roland Sallai giving the 18th-placed club a promising start, but Cyril Thereau, Duvan Zapata, Rodrigo de Paul and Jakub Jankto condemned the Sicilians, who lost Alessandro Diamanti to a red card, to their 20th defeat of the season.

The gap to safety stands at eight points.

Sunday’s game against Sampdoria had all the makings of a trap game for Juventus. The blucerchiati arrived red-hot, riding a run of five wins and two draws in their last seven games. Juve hadn’t really had to break a sweat in the UEFA Champions League against Porto in midweek, but they were still coming in on less rest than their opponents. After Friday’s quarterfinal draw, the specter of Barcelona was on the horizon to draw attention from the matter at hand.

Oh, and they were headed to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, site of their worst performance of the season, when they were thrashed 3-1 at the end of November by Genoa, Samp’s co-tenants at the Marassi.

Marco Giampaolo has some good talent to call upon, particularly up front with Luis Muriel and former Juve striker Fabio Quagliarella. They had the potential to really put Juve up against it, but the bianconeri were able to hold their own. At the end of the day quality held out, and by the final whistle Juve made an early Juan Cuadrado goal stand up and came out 1-0 winners to head into the international break on a high note.

Of course, not everything is so rosy. Three points were all well and good, but the biggest question after the game will be how badly Paulo Dybala is hurt after limping off just before the half-hour mark.

The game started quite brightly. Within three minutes Dybala had slipped a neat square ball to Gonzalo Higuain, but fired the ball straight at Christian Puggioni, who was deputizing for the suspended Emiliano Viviano. Less than 60 seconds later Samp had their own golden chance, as Andrea Barzagli was beaten on the wing by Quagliarella, who slipped the ball into a swath of open space in the Juve penalty area. Muriel was closing menacingly but slipped on the Marassi turf — something that turned into a common theme for both teams over the course of the afternoon — and Juve cleared the danger.

Quagliarella quickly established himself at Samp’s danger man, slipping past the defense to slam an angled shot just wide of the post. It looked like end to end stuff, and that Samp would have the chance to make a real game of it. They were pressing high and forcing the issue when they did get possession. But a minute later they were chasing the game.

Receiving a short feed from Mario Mandzukic, deputizing left back Kwadwo Asamoah came down the wing and fired in a bullet of a cross. Cuadrado drifted in from the other side and got in front of Vasco Regini to put a diving header past Puggioni to break the deadlock after just seven minutes.

Juve pressed for a second but their last touch failed them. Five minutes after the goal Dybala got down the right side and sent in a cross that hissed past Mandzukic, and four minutes after that Cuadrado’s cross from the end line was spilled by Puggioni straight into the path of Higuain, only for the Argentine to flail at ball, unable to put it past the struggling keeper. The rebound didn’t end up the right spot for Mandzukic to shoot, but he gathered it and pulled it back to Dybala, who whiffed at it with his usually-golden right foot. A prime chance to double the lead went begging.

It was an awful half of football for Higuain. He was denied by one excellent save from Puggioni when a wayward pass from Cuadrado was inadvertently deflected into his path seven yards from goal, but otherwise he either shot the ball straight at the goalkeeper or failed to get his chances right.

Then, a potential disaster. In the 27th minute, Dybala simply doubled over and sat down, holding his leg. Marko Pjaca stripped off his training gear within seconds, and Dybala limped off. He appeared on the bench and had a smile on his face for the second half, and Massimiliano Allegri said in his post-match press conference that it seems like a minor injury, but the last time he limped off in October he missed two months. Juve have to hope that the international break can help him mend with Barca on the horizon just over a month from now.

Dybala’s withdrawal seemed to drain the invention from Juve’s game. Pjaca initially played Dybala’s trequartista role, but swapped with Mandzukic at halftime, with the elder Croatian playing behind Higuain.

Pjaca did manage to create a spot of danger right before the half, playing a quick one-two with Higuain at the top of the box, but here again Higuain beat himself. Rather than hitting the ball first time with his right foot he took three touches and went to his left instead. The shot wasn’t all that far away from Puggioni and he got down easily to parry it aside.

The second half saw the pace predictably drop off. Juve, looking visibly fatigued, tried to see the 1-0 lead out, while Samp’s intense first-half pressing game dropped off as legs tired. Soon a few mistakes started creeping into Juve’s game.

Cuadrado burst forward five minutes after the restart and had Mandzukic on run with open space ahead of him, but pulled the trigger far too late and saw the pass intercepted. Sami Khedira charged down the left-hand channel only to keep the ball far too long, and the run came to nothing. Asamoah took a loose ball away from Gianluigi Buffon right before the keeper would have been able to pick it up, causing a minor problem that fortunately came to nothing.

The Ghana international made up for that mistake 10 minutes later with a fantastic last-ditch challenge on Samp supersub Patrik Schick to snuff out a counterattack that may have been their best chance to equalize.

That was probably the high water mark in terms of attacking play for either team. A few weak shots squiggled to Buffon, and six minutes from time Quagliarella flipped a ball up to himself to attempt the second of his trademark bicycle kicks, neither found the target but neither of which was all that far away either.

By the time Paolo Tagliavento blew the final whistle after five minutes of stoppage time, the game had devolved into a quite tepid affair.

Three points are three points, and Juve won’t turn their noses at them. It puts them 10 points clear of Napoli and 11 clear of Roma, who play later today against Sassuolo, and it’s nice to go into the international break on the back of a win. But the biggest story over the next few days will be just how long Dybala’s injury will keep him out, and whether or not this 1-0 win ends up being a Pyrrhic victory.

LE PAGELLE

Gianluigi Buffon - 6.5. Did what he needed to, but gets half a point knocked off after failing to hold a few shots. He smothered them afterwards, but you expect him to keep those corralled without the drama.

Dani Alves - 6. Really didn’t have that great a day on the right flank. Wayward in his passing and didn’t make himself as dangerous as he was against Porto. His own version of WCW’s infamous Finger Poke of Doom late after a scuffle with Regini was kinda embarrassing.

Andrea Barzagli - 6. Beaten for pace a few times when play forced him out wide. Played well when he didn’t have to keep up with runners.

Daniele Rugani - 8. This is the first time I’ve typed this man’s name all day. That’s a good thing. Nothing in his general area turned into trouble. Why was Medhi Benatia starting over him again?

Kwadwo Asamoah - 7. After his years in the wilderness because of the injuries he’s really found a home as Alex Sandro’s backup on the left. Cross on the goal was inch-perfect. Would’ve been a bit higher had he not made a few mistakes in the second half, although he was able to clean up after them.

Sami Khedira - 6. Did well to hold his position defensively but he looks a step slow right now. He may need an extended rest.

Miralem Pjanic - 5.5. Did he do anything today? It feels like nothing he did had any consequence.

Juan Cuadrado - 7. Goal bumps up his rating. He still plays too fast sometimes, and his decision-making really needs to improve.

Paulo Dybala - 6.5. Created a few good chances although he whiffed at a good one after that goal-mouth scramble. If he’d been able to stay on might’ve had a bigger say.

Mario Mandzukic - 7. Understated, but steady as always. Provided Asamoah with the pass that led to his cross and provided a couple of defensive headers on free kicks into the box.

Gonzalo Higuain - 5.5. Maybe he’s getting tired — he’s played in all but two of Juve’s competitive games this year — but he really should’ve done better in front of goal. Needs to stop taking so many touches before he shoots.

SUBS

Marko Pjaca - 5.5. Wasn’t a major factor beyond a couple of nice passes shortly after coming on for Dybala. Samp’s defense didn’t give him much room to operate.

Mario Lemina - 6. Looks like he was originally put on as a like-for-like for Cuadrado, which was odd. Did what was required to see out the game.

Stephan Lichtsteiner - NR. Came on late for Higuain to ice the game defensively.

Manager: 5.5. This was going to be a relatively neutral six until I read something in his post-match presser in regards to Dybala’s injury: “He felt the thigh muscle harden and he had been feeling that for a few days.” If he had been feeling something in that leg for a few days in training, especially after having played 78 minutes in midweek, why on earth was he playing today at all? Which leads me to...

TACTICAL ANALYSIS

The 4-2-3-1 formation has really changed Juve’s season since it was introduced after the January loss to Fiorentina. But today’s game may have exposed a major flaw. It’s not so much to do with the formation itself, but the team’s ability to fill it.

There are only five forwards on the roster — Higuain, Dybala, Mandzukic, Cuadrado, and Pjaca. Maybe you can say six on the days that Moise Kean is with the squad. That has severely limited Allegri’s ability to rotate the forwards. Higuain looks exhausted, and if Dybala was truly feeling something irregular in his leg during training, he shouldn’t have been playing.

This has forced Allegri into playing midfielders (Lemina today, Stefano Sturaro in the recent past) or defenders (Alves) out of position at the wing spots or simply whipping the current front four to death.

Pjanic proved capable of playing as a trequartista when Allegri was running a 4-3-1-2 just before the winter break — indeed, that’s probably what he was originally signed for in the first place. He could easily have slotted into the hole to give Dybala a rest while Claudio Marchisio or Lemina partnered Khedira in midfield. With the business end of the Champions League coming up, Allegri has to start rotating the squad better, either by mixing and matching in the 4-2-3-1 or shifting to something like the 4-3-1-2 to allow some of the forwards to rest their legs. Otherwise things could get very dicey.

POINTS ARE POINTS

A few weeks ago in his initial reaction column to the 1-1 draw at Udinese, Danny described the game as a “big old bucket of meh.” To that, I add the immortal words of the character Gorilla from the popular Youtube channel Glove and Boots: MEH. After a quick start, that’s pretty much what this game devolved into.

It was three points ground out, but three points closer to Scudetto No. 6 in a row and that’s really what it’s about. But it certainly wasn’t inspiring, and Juventini will be on tenterhooks until they find out exactly how long Dybala is going to be out. This was three points gained, but also a potential warning: fatigue is creeping in, and Allegri is going to have to manage the squad better if the team’s ultimate goals are to be realized.

Juventus defeated Sampdoria 1-0 to collect another three vital points away from home, but after a terrific start to the match, game management was what got the Bianconeri over the line.

Attacking from all angles, Juventus intimidated Sampdoria and took control of the game, exploiting their superiority to score a quick goal. Swift movements coupled with great combinations resulted in entertaining football.

However, when Paulo Dybala left the pitch with a suspected thigh injury, Juve suffered a decline and after half-time Sampdoria pushed forward with intensity, forcing their opponent to chase and expend too much energy. Yet their final pass was never quite good enough, resulting in another win for the Old Lady.

Positives

Juventus attacked beautifully, particularly in the first half, using the full width of the pitch. Boasting a range of varied skills, the side switched play often, alternated their attacks and overwhelmed Sampdoria. The ability to attack in such a manner is crucial for the upcoming match against Barcelona, where Juve will need to use the size of the Camp Nou's pitch against the Catalans.

Negatives

After such a spectacular first half, full of creativity and verve, it was disappointing to see Juve drop the tempo and end up in a situation where they expended energy chasing the ball. The side must better learn how to maintain a balanced performance throughout as well as keep the right tempo. While exhaustion is normal at this stage of the season, the difference shouldn't be so visible between the two halves of the game.

Manager rating out of 10

6 -- Massimiliano Allegri studied the opponent well, deploying a side that played an offensively marvelous game in the first half. The decline in the second half made the coach visibly angry, but his substitutions helped stop Sampdoria from causing too much damage.

Player ratings (1-10; 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Gianluigi Buffon, 6 -- The legendary goalkeeper broke the record held by the great Giampiero Boniperti as he has now played more minutes for Juventus in Serie A than any player in the club's history. His reward was to be barely tested throughout the match.

DF Dani Alves, 6 -- Good at taking players on and rotating the ball in the final third as Juve looked to pierce the defence. Master of the dark arts, his theatrics were frustrating to watch but done in an effort to help Juve close out the game.

DF Andrea Barzagli, 6 -- Barzagli has been suffering of late and Fabio Quagliarella took full advantage, overcoming the defender several times. Must react quicker as he's presently not the reliable player we know him to be.

DF Daniele Rugani, 6 -- Boasting the composure and experience, the defender was calm and assured at the back. Truly deserves a starting place more often.

DF Kwadwo Asamoah, 7 -- An excellent cross led to the winning goal, while his defending rescued the side on several occasions, especially from Patrik Schick's brilliance. Still committed too many mistakes, but redeemed himself well enough.

r191827_2_1296x864_3-2.jpg&w=738&site=es
Juan Cuadrado scored the only goal of the game against Sampdoria.

MF Sami Khedira, 6 -- Once again, always in the right place at the right time, making good runs forward while reading the game impeccably well. Slowed down in the second half.

MF Miralem Pjanic, 6 -- Recovered and rotated possession. Dictated the tempo impressively but suffered a little in the second half. Still, there is a feeling he is capable of even more.

MF Juan Cuadrado, 7 -- Scored a terrific goal, made excellent runs forward and combined beautifully with Dybala. His pace and movement threatened Vasco Regini while he exploited space well.

MF Paulo Dybala, 6 -- Always pushing the team forward with ingenuity and creativity, combining beautifully with his teammates. Taken off early, his absence was keenly felt.

MF Mario Mandzukic, 5 -- Not sure if he can be considered an offensive player anymore. Great at winning aerial duels and rescuing the side defensively, but his intense style of play robs him of efficiency going forward. Juve need him to be better going forward and perhaps sacrifice a little less for the sake of attacking brilliance.

FW Gonzalo Higuain, 6 -- Still not at his efficient best and not scoring the goals he needs to, although he was thwarted by some good goalkeeping. Managed a lovely turn and tried to provide for the team.

Substitutes

MF Marko Pjaca, 5 -- A mediocre performance. Looked scared to contribute defensively, and while he combined well with Higuain on occasion, he looked alarmingly confused by the tactics.

MF Mario Lemina, NR -- His pace and energy gave Juve a lift but little more than that.

DF Stephan Lichtsteiner, NR -- Had no time to make an impact.

Juve the new Euro normal

Max Allegri threw out the clichés by urging Juventus to treat Barcelona as

any other game. Livio Caferoglu applauds this stance.

Having seen an arguably superior Juventus side lose 3-1 to Barcelona in the 2015 Champions League Final, Massimiliano Allegri had to choose his words carefully after Friday’s last-eight draw in Nyon. So when the Coach was pressed on the tie at a Press Conference for Sunday’s Serie A game against Sampdoria, he did just that.

“I want to point out, and this is the last thing, that Juventus playing Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final is not an extraordinary event,” he remarked. “It has to be normal. We have been in this position fairly regularly of late, we were just unlucky last year to get Bayern Munich in the draw straight away.”

Little may have been made of it, but Allegri had pulled off a masterstroke. Not only did he distance the Bianconeri from the unwelcome distraction of revenge by merely not mentioning it, he also emphasised his team’s stature as a continental heavyweight. Indeed, Juve have now reached the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition in three of the previous five campaigns.

“We have Sampdoria, two games with Napoli and then Chievo,” added the former Milan boss. “It’ll be a fascinating match, but tomorrow is the most difficult of them all, because you don’t need to find motivation against Barcelona. Samp have beaten Roma, Milan and won the derby with Genoa.”

Juve ultimately beat Sampdoria 1-0 thanks to an early Juan Cuadrado goal, but Allegri’s assertion that the Blucerchiati were a tougher proposition than Barca was perfectly justified by the argument that motivation wouldn’t be needed for the Blaugrana. Granted, if the Old Lady can’t fire themselves up for such an encounter then it’s fair to say that they couldn’t for Samp.

And why shouldn’t Juve regard the tie as anything but normal? By adopting that very mindset, the Old Lady have got to where they are. Allegri admitted before the Berlin showpiece in 2015 that the Turin giants’ run to the Final was surprising, but two years on and their presence among Europe’s top eight sides should not be seen as extraordinary. With progress comes great expectation.

Yet the most telling soundbite was his reference to last season, when Juve were unfortunate to draw Bayern Munich in the last 16. Is Allegri implying that Barça will be any easier? Regardless of whether he is, the 49-year-old certainly made it clear that he was quietly confident about his table-toppers’ chances against the Catalans, who are still recovering from their euphoric comeback against Paris Saint-Germain.

While we all have seared in our minds the sight of that amazing Blaugrana 6-1 victory against all odds, we mustn’t forget how they got into that situation in the first place. You don’t get to make a great comeback without first falling well behind and Juve are definitely more organised than PSG.

This season’s order of play in the quarter-finals promises to rank among the best-ever, with Real Madrid and Bayern – managed by La Decima mastermind Carlo Ancelotti – also reigniting their rivalry, surprise packages Leicester City aiming for another Spanish scalp against runners-up Atletico Madrid and giant-slaying pair Borussia Dortmund and Monaco battling it out for a place in the final four.

However, Juve-Barça is as box office as it comes, even if Allegri doesn’t want to admit it. We can only hope that the Bianconeri will be able to play as good a game as their Coach can talk one, but the ex-Cagliari man is making all the right noises at this early stage.

Player Ratings

Buffon – Was forced into a few saves from outside the box and came out sharply to smother several smart through balls. 6.5

Barzagli – Solid, if unspectacular, but far more comfortable in the middle than his recent outing on the flank. 6.5

Rugani– Average and his positioning was at times a little haphazard. Yet held the fort well enough and played his part in restricting the opponents (mainly) to efforts from long range. 6

Alves – Whilst his passing, technique and control is of a high calibre, his theatrics are too often cringeworthy. He was bothering not just the opponents, ref and myself but comports himself far from in line with lo stile juve. 6

Asamoah – Provided the perfect assist for the goal and covered at the back very well indeed. A couple of the tackles he had to make came through his own manufacture, but he was immense in the challenge throughout. 7

Khedira – Was more involved than of late, though still seemed off his game. Made good movement heading forward but either held the ball too long or fumbled his chances. 6

Pjanic – Found the going tough against a constantly congested, harried midfield. Set piece deliveries were below par. 6

Dybala – Looked ever so lively until he was hooked off due to a twinge in his thigh.  Better to avoid any risks with such important games to come in the near future. 6.5

Cuadrado – Scored a very rare header, which he took splendidly, other than which was mangled and crowded out of any further meaningful work in the final third. 6.5

Mandzukic – Kept quiet throughout though did help defensively using his aerial prowess to pluck from the sky several high balls into our box. 6

Higuain – Gonzalo was ravenous, running hard, creating several great chances which he was unlucky to see saved or fly wide, tracking back, hustling the opposing defence and keeper. He is not often praised for the huge amount of work he puts in all over the field. On something of a goal drought, as he has not scored in 4 now, but the goals are coming. 7

Pjaca – Was lively when he first appeared, though petered out woefully in the second half. 5.5

The squad is tired, though have fared well through a very busy period of fixtures. We can but now hope the internationals are used sparingly over the coming break, for we desperately need them all to return in top condition for the final push. You can get the latest odds and information on Juve’s chances in the Champions League and Serie A here footballbets.tips .

Allegri is rotating intelligently, with even Lemina looking spritely when he made a late cameo, and despite the chopping and changing, we are grinding out results even when playing below our best. And we did play poorly for large periods in the second half against an impressive Samp. Giampoli deserves credit for how he has set up his side, for they were confident, very well organised and never gave us an inch.

Our first half hour was quite brilliant, however. With numerous chances created but just the one goal to show for our efforts. Once Dybala left and the system was soon after altered, we became rather flat, with the 4-4-2 failing to create as much as the 4-2-3-1.

I remain unsure of our true value, though considering we generally create more chances than our opponents and the results have been steady and welcome, there is little room for complaint. Allegri now has time to get a few of the second string sharper, with Marchisio, Chiellini, Sturaro and Lemina able to continue their path towards full recovery from a series of niggling injuries.

Asamoah was yet again sturdy on the flank, and if he continues in this form I see no reason why we need purchase an alternative back-up to Sandro.

Slight concerns abound of the Pjanic – Khedira pivot as it does not work as well without Dybala constantly dropping back, roaming across the field to give them a option to play to feet. Perhaps that is one area we will focus upon during the Summer, as we have no natural trequartista alternative to Paulo. Pjaca, I thought, might be fine there, but I’d prefer to see Clemenza given a shot there before the season is out!

Max was rightly angry at not just Juve, for failing to control the game more intelligently but also with Samp for refusing to kick the ball out when the irritating Alves goblin was faking injury then pointing to a small bruise on his thigh.

A draw would not have been unfair on us or generous to the hosts, yet its another 3 points and clean sheet, a few steps closer to a historic 6th straight scudetto.

Briefly…on Barca.

I am more eager to simply win the trophy than to face the toughest opponents at every stage of the tournament. Which is not the same as fear. I am not scared of Barca, yet they are one of two sides – Bayern the other – whom I wished to avoid until the final. Still, I am happy and excited to be facing the dastardly spaniards. We are a different, not necessarily stronger, outfit to when we last faced them, and they are different in turn. Perhaps more vulnerable. They possess one of the finest attacking units of history. Which we can deal with and certainly challenge at the other end. Spirit and the choice of referee seem to me the likely deciding factors of the tie.

Those two games versus Napoli are gold dust as preparation. Just what we need. For we have the chance to test ourselves against a hated, very strong opponent twice in a week, then what should be a rugged, yet more simple encounter with Chievo before Barca come to town.

Viareggio UPDATE (U19 Primavera)

We are through from the first round of the Viareggio tournament, of which we are holders after last year’s victory. Clemenza has been absent, I believe through injury, Kean has been with the Italy U17s (and the senior squad) as has Caligara. Results so far are:

Juventus 2-1 Dukla Prague (Mosti, Leris)

Juventus 1-1 Toronto (Zeqiri)

Juventus 4-1 Maceratese (Bove, Vasko, Zeqiri, Galtarossa)

We will face Bruges in the last 16 knock-out stage.

Forza Juve

President of the Italian Association of Referees Marchello Nicchi admits: 'we all make mistakes'.

The AIA chief spoke in reponse to recent controversies surrounding refereeing descisions, but refused to be drawn on the last-minute penalty awarded to Juventus in their recent match with Milan.

"We work calmly to avoid errors, but also unnecessary controversy," Nicchi told Radio Uno. "We have asked several times that calm in exercised in assessing and commenting upon incidents.

"However, this does not always happen, since behind the human error of referees are the clubs who seek to justify missed targets, the Coaches about renewal of their contracts and some publishers who want to sell more.

"This is the evil of our football. Beautiful games were reduced to refereeing episodes that there will always be there, even with technology. Us talking today would just an add tension. Our phrases taken out of context, bringing forth what is not the truth.

"I think Coaches should talk less or they should be made to talk to the officials on the sidelines. Juve-Milan? I’m not referring to this match, but we make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, even the players and the Coaches."

Pirlo: ‘Juventus can beat Barcelona’

Andrea Pirlo believes Juventus can beat Barcelona, as the sides are different to the Champions League final of 2015.

That match proved to be the midfielder’s final appearance in a Bianconeri shirt, as Barça took a 3-1 win in Berlin.

“It will be a different tie compared to two years ago,” Pirlo predicted, speaking to Sport.

“Juventus have changed and this is a different Barcelona. In addition, they’re not playing a final this time, but two games over 180 minutes in which I think we’ll see some good football.

“Juve have a very strong team, and if you want to reach the final you need to play against the best teams.

“I don’t think Juve are a team under construction, they have great players and they’re trying to find the right balance for the four strikers.

“This Juve have the capacity to knock Barcelona out.”

‘Barca & Spain? Both are doable!’

Giampiero Ventura insists Barcelona and Spain are “doable” for Juventus and Italy as Danilo D’Ambrosio’s inclusion “is a message”.

Juve face Barca in the Champions League quarter-finals early next month, while Italy and Spain lock horns later this year, in what could be the match that decides Group B for 2018 World Cup qualification.

“Juve-Barca and Spain-Italy? They’re difficult games, but both are doable,” the CT noted in the third and final part of his Press conference.

“The Bianconeri have never been so sure of their own strength, pretty much like what’s happened here.

“It’ll be difficult to go to get a result in Spain, but nothing stops us from doing so. If we play at 95 percent, we’ll have all our cards to play with. If we play 60% then forget it.

Coming off a midweek Champions League clash with FC Porto, Juventus were back in domestic action with a trip to Sampdoria on Sunday afternoon. An early goal from Juan Cuadrado was enough to hand the away side all three points as they had to deal with another Paulo Dybala injury concern. That injury is reported to be a muscular problem which shouldn’t keep the Argentinian out for too long — a relief for any team who are scheduled to come up against Barcelona in the next month.

The result was what Juve needed, but as the game went on, tired legs were on display. It’s bound to be a bother, playing so many games in so little time, with their European ambitions combined with their Italian Cup aspirations meaning they rarely have a week’s rest before league games. The win against Porto was comfortable, but seven players from the starting lineup on Tuesday night returned for the contest on Sunday, with three of those changes coming in defence. Andrea Barzagli, Daniele Rugani and Kwadwo Asamoah came in for Leonardo Bonucci, Medhi Benatia and Alex Sandro, respectively, while Miralem Pjanic returned after being rested in place of Claudio Marchisio. That meant most of Juve’s attacking players were asked to put in another 90-minute shift.

Eventually the energy they’ve exhausted in the last week would catch up with them, but they did start well. A beautiful patient passing move in the eighth minute was finished off with a bullet header by Cuadrado. Facing a high-press from their opponents most of the game, this was a good example of how composed Juve can be when facing such a tactic. The ball ended up on the left-hand side where Mario Mandzukic laid it off for Asamoah who sent in a brilliant cross to find Cuadrado. Sublime offensive work from the Bianconeri and a well-deserved goal to finish it off.

There were opportunities to double the lead, mostly from Gonzalo Higuain, but his poor form was on show yet again. With no legitimate back-up striker, due to Mandzukic operating on the left wing, Higuain has had to play a lot of games this season, perhaps more than Max Allegri would like his star striker to be involved in. A second option for the position must be a priority in the summer. For the time being, however, Allegri has no other choice but to play his record signing in these crucial matches. His tiredness was on show as the first half petered out — either struggling to hit the target or unable to control the ball. Higuain must be suffering from a lack of rest and, much like his teammates, his fatigue was obvious.

Juve were looking slow and sluggish after the restart, with the shot chart the most telling when looking at the difference between both halves. Juve registered nine shots for the match, but all nine attempts came in the first half. Unable to muster up a single shot in the second half, it shows just how lethargic they were going forward at times, sometimes even resisting the urge to push up. Allegri must have accepted his team’s deteriorating stamina levels as he reverted to a more defensive stand, knowing that their midweek efforts were taking their toll. It has often happened after European fixtures, where an away match the following weekend becomes harder work than it should be. Dybala’s injury didn’t help matters, as his pace and trickery were absent for the majority of the game, but Allegri’s tactics should be praised as he adapted to his team’s physical condition.

With their energy lacking, Allegri realized it was best to sit on the slender lead than push for the goal which would have sealed the win. Having to deal with one of his more influential players being taken off, and Higuain forgetting his scoring boots, there was little need to risk a Sampdoria equalizer. Luis Muriel and co. would have been savoring the opportunity to counter-attack but a deeper defensive line kept Sampdoria’s quick players in check. Juve were able to cut off any supply to the final third, with seven interceptions in the last 40 minutes compared to their opponents 2.

Barzagli may have endured a tough afternoon at times, as he lost Fabian Quagliarella on a couple of occasions, but he helped dictate his defence’s solid performance. Per whoscored.com, the veteran had six clearances and 4 interceptions while also boasting a 93% pass success rate. He’s lost some form in the last few months, but the 35-year-old came through when it mattered today and was one of Juve’s key performers.

With Napoli and Roma both eliminated from European competition this month, it means Juve are somewhat at a disadvantage as their fixture list starts to become congested. With the second leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final yet to be played as well as the two matches with Barcelona coming up, there will be more of these grind-it-out wins required if they are to retain their Serie A title. It may not have been a dominant performance but Juve done what was needed to do and retained their comfortable lead at the top.

Griezmann: ‘I like Juventus’

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann tips Juventus for the Champions League Semi-Finals - “they’re hard to play against, like us!”

The Bianconeri face Barcelona in the Quarter-Finals of the competition, and the French international sees them as one of the best sides in Europe.

“No-one is above the rest,” Griezmann said in an interview with L’Équipe.

“But I like Juventus, they’re hard to play, like us! Bayern, Barça or Real will be in the final shake-up, but they're playing each other so there will be big matches.

“Juve will get to the semi-finals, I think. They don’t give much away at the back, they’re very solid. They’re complete.”

Griezmann was also asked how long he’ll play for.

“Not up until 40, like [Francesco] Totti. You really need to by physically strong to keep your place. You also have to be very mentally strong to keep going.

“I started at 18, so it seems good to go to 33 or 34.”

It’s reported Davide Massa received threats after refereeing Juventus-Milan.

The Rossoneri lost 2-1 in Turin, with Paulo Dybala controversially scoring a last-minute penalty after Mattia De Sciglio was deemed to have handled it.

According to La Stampa, Massa then received a meaning phone call and an anonymous, threatening letter.

The newspaper reports that the letter and phone call contained very precise details about the referee’s working and private life, and is being treated very seriously by police.

For obvious reasons, the actual content of the letter is being kept secret, but it’s thought law enforcement have identified the origin of the call.

The letter has been sent for analysis to find any biological or digital data, such as the DNA of the saliva used to affix the stamp.

Crespo: ‘Barça better than Juventus’

Hernan Crespo believes Barcelona are “a step above” Juventus ahead of their Champions League Quarter-Final.

The pair have been drawn together in the last eight of the competition, a repeat of the 2015 final which saw the Blaugrana win 3-1.

“The way I see it is, if Barça and Juve are both at 100 per cent the Blaugrana will go through. They’re stronger,” Crespo told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“That’s not to say though that [Lionel] Messi and his lads are at their best, they flopped in the first leg with Paris Saint-Germain.

“So Juve can have their say. One thing is for sure, [Max] Allegri’s lads can’t afford any mistakes, they have to be in top physical and psychological condition. And [Gonzalo] Higuain can be decisive.

“Obviously we all saw Barça’s extraordinary comeback against PSG, in the return leg at Camp Nou. It was amazing all right, but it can’t always be Sunday.

“I think that the true Barça right now isn’t the one from the first leg or the second leg against PSG, it’s somewhere in between. And in that space Juve can enter and cause problems.

“So Barcelona will go through? I didn’t say that, but logic tells you that the Spaniards are a step above.

“Everyone knows that, even Juventus, so Allegri’s team will have to play the game of their lives. In Turin they’re aware that everything will be played for over these two games.”

Crespo is a former Argentine international, and was asked about the duel between his compatriots, Higuain and Messi.

“The clash between Juve and Barcelona isn’t just about Messi and Higuain, there are other champions who can decide it. Football is a team sport.

“It’s clear though that Messi is ahead of Pipita, he has more international experience and is often decisive in the matches which count. He’s a leader.

“When he’s on the ball everyone follows him, his teammates escort him and the opponents hound him and don’t leave him alone.

“Higuain doesn’t have the same European CV, but then he’s played fewer games than Messi.

“Messi is just Messi, there’s no need to add further adjectives. He’s the best in the world. He’s been playing at a really high level for the past 10 years, it’s impressive.

“Higuain is going through a bit of a delicate period because he hasn’t scored for a few games, but no-one can question a striker like him.

Former Juventus midfielder Simone Padoin believes they have “all the credentials” to win the Champions League.

The Cagliari player won five Scudetti and two Coppe Italia during his time with the Bianconeri, and gave his thoughts on this year’s team in an interview with Goal.

“The Juventus Stadium is something exceptional,” Padoin noted.

“The passion there is fantastic, I’ll never forget the ovation the fans gave me when I returned. Of course the stadium doesn’t win by itself, there’s also the quality of the team.

“I’ve attended several of my former teammates’ games this season, and I’ve seen something special in their eyes.

“It seems to me that this Juve have reached full awareness of their strength, I think they have all the credentials to try and win the Champions League.”
