to be replaced by Federico Bernardeschi, who went on to set up the opener.

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain was taken off just 15 minutes into the derby clash with Torino after picking up an injury.

The Argentina international landed heavily five minutes into Sunday's match after hurdling goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu when trying to reach Miralem Pjanic's throughball.

The 30-year-old tried to continue after receiving treatment but eventually had to be replaced by Federico Bernardeschi, with it appearing that Higuain had hurt his ankle.

It will come as a concern for Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri ahead of a crucial run of fixtures in his side's season.

Juve take on Atalanta in Serie A next Sunday before the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final against the same opponents three days later.

They then begin March with a trip to Lazio, four days before they take on Tottenham in the Champions League last 16, who hold the edge in the tie on away goals after a 2-2 draw in Turin.

The loss of the Argentine, who scored both of his side's goals against Spurs on Tuesday, was a big blow for the Serie A champions as they look to overtake Napoli at the top of the table.

However, Bernardeschi proved to be a sound replacement for the former Real Madrid and Napoli star as he took on a pass from Alex Sandro and drove into the box to set the Brazilian up with the return pass and give his side the lead after 33 minutes.

Allegri: 'No Juve failure'

Max Allegri was pleased with the way Juventus reacted against Torino and insists the 2-2 draw with Tottenham “is not a failure.”

The Bianconeri were decimated by injuries, but beat Toro 1-0 thanks to an Alex Sandro tap-in.

“Juventus made too many technical errors after going 2-0 up against Tottenham and they had more chances than we did, but we go to London convinced we can do it,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“Juve are a strong side with extraordinary players, so I am happy to train them. We’re challenging on all three fronts, only got it wrong on four games and I don’t consider the 2-2 with Tottenham to be a failure, nor a tragedy.

“I am proud of the lads and today we saw a good reaction, as we enjoyed ourselves even during difficult moments.”

Paulo Dybala made his comeback in the Derby della Mole.

“Dybala did well for 30 minutes, obviously he’s lacking match fitness, but that will come.”

Higuain and Bernardeschi CL doubts

Gonzalo Higuain and Federico Bernardeschi will undergo testing to determine the extent of injuries sustained in today’s Derby della Mole.

“During today's derby against Torino, Gonzalo Higuain suffered a contusion and trauma to his left ankle, while Federico Bernardeschi suffered some pain involving his left knee ligaments. For both, further tests are planned in the coming days," read a statement.

The Argentine forward lasted only 15 minutes of the 1-0 win over Torino at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino before being substituted after falling awkwardly on his left ankle.

Higuain had sustained the knock after only three minutes following a challenge with Torino keeper Salvatore Sirigu, but despite limping on he was forced to concede defeat not long afterwards.

His replacement, Bernardeschi, was not included in Max Allegri’s starting 11 due to not being fully fit - however, he was required to play 75 minutes before going off himself deep into injury time.

And following the final whistle, it emerged that the former Fiorentina man had sustained a sprain to the ligament of his left knee.

The duo will now undergo testing over the next few days, amid fears they could miss Juve’s crucial Champions League last 16 second leg with Tottenham Hotspur in just over a fortnight’s time.

No video evidence on Chiellini

Serie A, Giudice Sportivo: niente prova tv per Chiellini

Feb 20, 2018

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini faces no video evidence punishment for striking Torino star Andrea Belotti during the derby.

The incident occurred during Sunday’s Derby della Mole, which ended 1-0 for the Bianconeri.

Chiellini caught Belotti in the face with a fist, but it was not considered an intentional act.

VAR was not used in this case, as it seems the connection was caught on a Sky Sport Italia exclusive pitch-side camera and not one used by the officials in the booth.

Higuain ready for Coppa

https://www.football-italia.net/117619/higuain-ready-coppa

Feb 23, 2018

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain is expected to be fit for the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg with Atalanta.

The Argentinian international went off injured in the Derby della Mole last Sunday, and it was later confirmed he had suffered an ankle injury.

It was feared that would keep him out of the Champions League second leg with Tottenham Hotspur, but Tuttosport believes he is nearing a return.

The newspaper states that if that match were to be played on Sunday, Higuain would probably be able to play, but he won’t be risked against Atalanta this weekend with Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala both fit.

It’s likely Pipita will be on the bench, but only to be used in case of emergency.

His return is therefore expected to be on Wednesday, when Juve face Atalanta in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final.

In either case, Higuain is expected to be available to face Spurs.

Luca Toni: Napoli lack ‘winning mentality’

https://www.football-italia.net/117638/toni-napoli-lack-winning-mentality

Feb 23, 2018

Luca Toni claims Napoli lack a “winning mentality” as the former Italy striker “didn’t like the way they decided to abandon cups for the League.”

Napoli lead Serie A by a point but at the expense of their participation in the Coppa Italia and European competition, prompting Toni to take issue with the way the Partenopei were going about their business.

“The beautiful thing is that Serie A is the only European League still up for grabs,” the ex- Juve, Fiorentina and Bayern Munich hitman told RMC Sport.

“I didn’t like the way Napoli decided to abandon cups for the League. That’s not the right way to acquire a winning mentality, even if they’re still a great team.

“Juventus are actually trying to move forward in every competition because of this ruthlessness in wanting to win everything.

“The title race will be a good fight until the end of the season.”

Allegri gives Juve injury updates

https://www.football-italia.net/117663/allegri-gives-juve-injury-updates

Feb 24, 2018

Juventus Coach Max Allegri confirms Federico Bernardeschi could require surgery, while Gonzalo Higuain is unlikely to face Atalanta.

It kicks off tomorrow at 18.00 CET - 17.00 GMT.

Bernardeschi sprained his knee and ankle during last week’s 1-0 win over Torino and was meant to undergo tests for ligament damage.

However, the leg is still so swollen that the examinations cannot give a definitive answer.

“Bernardeschi will be revaluated in 20 days,” said Allegri in his Press conference.

“If by that time the conservative treatment has not had the desired effect, we’ll see if he needs an operation. Unfortunately, that is the situation with Federico.

“Higuain got this knock to the ankle last week, he hasn’t trained since and only worked separately from the squad, so it’s very unlikely he’ll be able to play tomorrow.

“Blaise Matuidi and Mario Mandzukic are available. Mattia De Sciglio has a problem with his adductor muscle and will be re-evaluated next week. Juan Cuadrado is working, but still a long way off his comeback.”

This leaves Juventus not only short-staffed for the Atalanta game in Serie A, but also nervous ahead of the Champions League trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

Paulo Dybala has made his return to the fold after a thigh strain, but only as a substitute.

“I tried him out as a centre-forward yesterday, but I need to evaluate it, because we’ve got four games coming up: tomorrow, then Wednesday in the Coppa Italia, Saturday Lazio and the following Wednesday Tottenham.

“It’s unthinkable that Dybala could be ready after 40-45 days out to play 90 minutes in all three games. He played around half-a-hour against Torino, so it’s about finding the right fitness levels in a decisive moment of the season.

“Tomorrow we’ll certainly start Matuidi and Miralem Pjanic, then will decide between Stefano Sturaro, Claudio Marchisio or Rodrigo Bentancur.

“Gigi Buffon and Stephan Lichtsteiner start tomorrow, with either Daniele Rugani or Medhi Benatia.”

Juve beat Atalanta 1-0 in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final and Gian Piero Gasperini’s men are fresh from a heart-breaking Europa League exit to Borussia Dortmund.

“I compliment Atalanta on the way they faced that tournament. It’s a pity they went out, as did Napoli, because Italian sides should always try to go forward in Europe.

“They’ll be eager to make up for it straight away and on Wednesday, like us, they’ll be fired up to reach the Coppa Italia Final. Atalanta are a very physical side who play good football and it’s the first game in a very important run of fixtures.”

Higuain out of Juve-Atalanta

Gonzalo Higuain, Sami Khedira and Federico Bernardeschi are out of the Juventus squad to face Atalanta, but Blaise Matuidi and Mario Mandzukic return.

It kicks off on Sunday at 18.00 CET - 17.00 GMT.

The Bianconeri are forced to do without Higuain, who sprained his ankle in the 1-0 victory over Torino last week, and Bernardeschi, who hurt his knee in the same match and will be out for at least three weeks.

Coach Max Allegri said today that if conservative treatment hasn’t resolved the issue by then, Bernardeschi could require surgery.

Mandzukic missed the Torino game with flu and returns with Matuidi and Benedikt Howedes.

Khedira is out along with long-term absentee Juan Cuadrado and full-back Mattia De Sciglio, who has a muscular issue.

Juventus squad for Atalanta: Buffon, Pinsoglio, Szczesny; Chiellini, Benatia, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Howedes, Rugani, Lichtsteiner; Pjanic, Marchisio, Matuidi, Asamoah, Sturaro, Bentancur; Dybala, Douglas Costa, Mandzukic

Mandzukic to lead Juve line

Feb 25, 2018

Mario Mandzukic is expected to start as Juventus’ centre-forward in their match with Atalanta today.

With Gonzalo Higuain ruled out after picking up an injury early in the win over Torino last weekend, Coach Max Allegri is set to move the Croatian into the middle from his usual position on the left.

Paulo Dybala is likely to start on the bench once more as he continues his return to fitness, so Mandzukic will be flanked by Alex Sandro on the left and Douglas Costa on the right in Juve’s 4-3-3 formation.

Elsewhere, captain and goalkeeper Gigi Buffon will come back into the Old Lady’s starting eleven after being among the substitutes for the Derby della Mole victory.

Midfielder Blaise Matuidi is back sooner than initially expected following a thigh injury and is tipped for a return to the line up, replacing Stefano Sturaro who drops to the bench.

Full-back Mattia De Sciglio joins Juve’s already lengthy injury list and will be replaced by Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Juan Cuadrado is still absent as he continues to recover from a groin injury, while Federico Bernardeschi could face surgery on his left knee after going off late last week at the Stadio Olimpico.

Atalanta meanwhile are likely to make changes, given that they were in Europa League action on Thursday and have a Coppa Italia semi-final to plan for against Juve in midweek.

“This time we will mix it up, on Wednesday we will honour the cup,” Coach Gian Piero Gasperini remarked as he gave an indication as to what his immediate priorities are.

Andrea Petagna is missing through injury for La Dea, who are looking to repeat last season's achievement of Europa League qualification.

Probable Line-ups

Juventus: Buffon, Lichtsteiner, Rugani, Chiellini, Asamoah, Marchisio, Pjanic, Matuidi, Douglas Costa, Mandzukic, Alex Sandro

Atalanta: Berisha, Toloi, Palomino, Masiello, Castagne, De Roon, Freuler, Spinazzola, Cristante, Ilicic, Cornelius

Juventus-Atalanta has officially been called off due to heavy snowfall in Turin after a pitch inspection.

The snow had been in the city for several hours, but intensified considerably just before the warm-up.

Following a pitch inspection, there was the theory they could simply delay kick-off until another later inspection, but it has now been called off.

“The conditions are clear to all. It would certainly change the spectacle on show, not to mention potential danger for the players,” Juventus director Beppe Marotta told Mediaset Premium before the decision was made.

“We are prepared for any eventuality. Now we’ll await the referee’s pitch inspection and see if there’s a delay or a postponement.

“It’s possible to play in these conditions, but would not be a spectacle worthy of the top flight. There is also the issue we have to take into consideration of potential harm to the players.”

Juventus-Atalanta was called off due to snowfall today and is likely to be played on March 13 or 14.

It was supposed to kick off at 18.00 CET - 17.00 GMT today, but the snow over Turin intensified considerably and made it impossible to continue.

The game was postponed following a pitch inspection.

It cannot be played tomorrow, because these two teams will meet again on Wednesday in the Coppa Italia semi-final.

Juve have a packed fixture list, depending on whether they progress past Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the most probable dates to reschedule Juve-Atalanta in Serie A are on Tuesday March 13 or Wednesday March 14.

Massimiliano Allegri confirms there’s “an excellent chance” Claudio Marchisio will face Atalanta, but Gonzalo Higuain will be on the Juventus bench “at most”.

The Bianconeri face Atalanta in the second leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final, after the league meeting on Sunday was called off.

Marchisio was due to play in that match before it was snowed off, amid rumours he could leave if he doesn’t play more.

“Tomorrow there’s an excellent chance Marchisio will play,” Allegri confirmed in his pre-match Press conference.

“In principle the starting XI could be Sunday’s, apart from one or two variations that I’ll have to see about today.

“As for the future, right now all of those who are part of the Juve world have to remain focused on our objectives.

“Then, in June, everyone will decide their own future. Right now we can’t be distracted by anything, it’s a very important season, as compared to last year we have a very strong opponent in Napoli who are putting up important numbers.

“That means in the League we have to do something extraordinary, after the lads have won six Scudetti in a row.

“We have the Coppa Italia and the Champions League, so we don’t even have time to think about the future, we have to live the present in the best possible way."

Paulo Dybala came off the bench against Torino, could he play tomorrow?

“He needs minutes, there’s no doubt about that, but I’ll evaluate tomorrow. Paulo will be involved in the game, either from the start or when the game is underway.

“Then there’s Saturday’s match [against Lazio] which will give him extra minutes. Above all we’re missing Sunday’s game and I always say that those count, they can weigh on you.

“I definitely have to give Paulo minutes. Among other things he’s much better, he’s done well in training and we need him from a technical point of view.

“Higuain? I’ve already said that at the maximum Higuain could be on the bench tomorrow. He hasn’t trained at all, he’s done two sessions on the bike which doesn’t use it [his ankle] much I don’t think.

“If he does a bit of training today, if he’s good and doesn’t have pain in his ankle he’ll be on the bench tomorrow. No more than the bench.

“The doubts I have are over a defender and a midfielder. These two.

“I have to look at today and Saturday, then we have next Wednesday [against Tottenham], we have three important games I have to manage.

“We’ll face the match tomorrow in the best condition, with the best team we can, knowing that in having Khedira available tomorrow I’ll have one more alternative, then there’s also Saturday’s game.

“Tomorrow Bentancur is out through suspension so I have one midfielder less.

“That means I’ll have to get an idea of how many minutes one can play tomorrow, how many minutes one or two can play on Saturday.

“Then I’ll evaluate and decide on the starting XI. Buffon will play in goal tomorrow.”

Allegri was then asked if he believes Napoli can win all of their games between now and the end of the season.

“It would be nice if Napoli won them all and we won them all, but if they win all all of their and we win all of ours we can’t win…

“We have to take it one game at a time, because on Sunday I was planning to send a team out to give some players some minutes and then the snow came down and we couldn’t play.

“So let’s play one game at a time, face them calmly with great enthusiasm and above all great balance, knowing we have important commitments.

“I repeat, this year is different because we had much more of a points advantage last year.

“This year we have Napoli who are clinging to our coattails - indeed, we can say that we’re clinging to Napoli’s coattails.”

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri shrugs “whoever leads Serie A on May 20 will deserve to win it” after Napoli went four points clear.

The Bianconeri’s clash with Atalanta was snowed off on Sunday evening, meaning Maurizio Sarri’s men extended their lead at the top when they thrashed Cagliari last night.

“I see that we have one game less, and that on Saturday in Rome we’ll play our sixth away match in eight games,” Allegri pointed out in his Press conference today.

“We missed the match with Atalanta on Sunday, so after Saturday’s game there will be 12 games left for us, of which we have seven at home and five away, so it’s a good fixture list for us.

“That said, the league will come down to the last game. It will be a beautiful challenge, a beautiful championship between two teams that are fighting.

“It’s the only [top] League in Europe that’s still open because all the others are pretty much over, or close to being over.

“In the end whoever wins will be the best, whoever leads the league on May 20 will deserve to win it.

“We have the desire to win a seventh consecutive Scudetto, and above all to challenge a team which is doing great things.

“So for us it’s an important challenge, a beautiful challenge, but tomorrow we have the Coppa Italia and the Coppa Italia for us is an equal goal.

“First of all because in the modern era there has never been a team which has won the same competition four times in a row in terms of the national cup.

“This year we, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona have that chance. So tomorrow is important for us, it’s like a final and we have to treat it as such.

“Then we play on Saturday again and we have to turn our focus to Lazio. Tomorrow though we obviously have the objective of reaching the final.

“It won’t be easy, because we’ll be up against a tough Atalanta side who will want to rebuild after their Europa League exit and who, above all, have a great chance to reach the final of the Coppa Italia, which doesn’t happen every year.

“So it’ll be a nice challenge but we have to make sure we’re ready.

“The result from the first leg doesn’t count, because 1-0 is a scoreline which gives you few advantages.

“Tomorrow we have to score, and if we score we’ll have taken one step forward. But we have to score.”

Allegri also gave an injury update ahead of the match.

“The only one who could be recovered for the bench is Gonzalo Higuain, all the others are available.

“Khedira will be available, Cuadrado, De Sciglio and Bernardeschi are still out.”

Napoli Coach Maurizio Sarri has been vocal in his complaints about playing after Juve, but now it’s the Bianconeri who will be playing catch-up, given they have a game in hand.

“We have to focus solely on what we have to do,” Allegri shrugged.

“For us it was important to get to March and still be in three competitions, and tomorrow we have the first in-or-out game, where we’ll either reach the final or go out of the competition.

“So that has to be an important objective for us to achieve, then we’ll dive into the league because after tomorrow we’ll either play the final in May or the Coppa Italia is over.

“We’ll return to the league on Saturday and then on Wednesday we’ll have another in-or-out match [against Tottenham Hotspur].

“It’s nice to remain in competitions, because we have the ambition to play in all competitions, that’s what Juventus is. Then what others think and tell us doesn’t change us.

“We need to keep our heads down, work and try to get results. We’ll try to be ready to take our chance tomorrow then in the league and the Champions League.

“To have our minds on other things would only expend mental energy and that serves no purpose.

“I always say and I’ll keep saying that in the end what matters is when you can write what was won in the history books, because otherwise we forget what happened two days before, never mind 20 years ago.

“You can say ‘in that game if it had hit the inside of the post and gone in, maybe we would have won’… it doesn’t matter at all, it doesn’t mean anything.

“You need to be very practical in life.”

Villas Boas: ‘Juventus can beat Spurs’

https://www.football-italia.net/117803/avb-‘juventus-can-beat-spurs’

Feb 27, 2018

Andre Villas-Boas believes Juventus can come back against Tottenham Hotspur, not least because “there’s no atmosphere” at Wembley.

The Bianconeri blew a 2-0 lead in the first leg of their Champions League Last 16 tie, so head to London at a disadvantage next week.

“Juve have more experience and players who are used to playing these kind matches,” Villas-Boas, a former Spurs manager, told Corriere dello Sport.

“Now though they have to win or draw 3-3. It’s not an impossible task which awaits them, but nor is it easy because Tottenham are doing well, they play a physical game and can cause anyone problems.

“In Turin, Juventus struggled to limit the possession of the ball enjoyed by the English side, with long stretches of the match played in the opposition half.

“At home they generally suffer sen less than away, but Wembley is an excellent stadium to try and pull off a feat because there’s no atmosphere, it’s difficult for the fans to put pressure on.

“It’s not impossible for Juventus, but Tottenham are organised and if they manage to use the ball like they did in Turin…”

Spurs’ danger man is Harry Kane, and the Portuguese was also asked about his former striker.

“He was very young then, and he wasn’t my first choice because I had Soldado and Adebayor.

“With the directors we agreed it would be best if he went out on loan and played but instead he stayed, so I gave him some chances in the Europa League.

“I don’t have any credit for his explosion though, the one who really gave him space was my successor, Tim Sherwood.

“Real Madrid? It’s up to him. It depends what he wants to do and what his ambitions for his career are.

“If he’s a fan of trophies and fame then maybe it would be better to leave Tottenham, but if he prefers stability and the adulation of the fans then the speech is different.

“One or two more years at Spurs would be useful to improve further.”

Returning to Juve, Villas-Boas was asked if he believes the Old Lady can win the Champions League this season.

“Barcelona seem stronger on paper, even if they’ve lost Neymar,” the former Chelsea manager said.

“Dembélé is back, then there’s Lionel Messi, Suarez and the super-reliable Paulinho.

“They have the right squad to win the cup, even if Bayern are very strong and Real [Madrid], if they knock out Paris Saint-Germain, can say it’s theirs.

“The Scudetto? Napoli play great football and [Coach Maurizio] Sarri is very good, I saw the game they lost at home to Leipzig and I couldn’t believe it.

“If the return leg had been 10 minutes longer though they’d have gone through, because with [Lorenzo] Insigne, [Dries] Mertens and [Jose] Callejon up-front they can hurt anyone.

“The Italian League is more open and balanced than in the past, but in my opinion it won’t be easy for Napoli.

“In China with Shanghai [Shenhua] I had to take the title from Guangzhou Evergrande who had won it for many years, but in the end their experience and habit of winning decisive matches counted.

“The same thing could happen in Serie A in April, and for that reason I see Juventus as favourites.”

Villas-Boas was Jose Mourinho’s assistant at Inter, so naturally he was asked about this weekend’s derby.

“I saw the game they won against Benevento, and I noticed that the players are worried, anxious and struggling to express themselves at their best.

“I hope they can win the derby, because I remain tied to Inter and the experience I had with the Nerazzurri. I haven’t been back to Milan for two years, but I still have my friends and my restaurants.

“A return to Italy? Let’s just say I’ve been close to a few Italian clubs and I’ve had a couple of meetings with their directors.

“Of course I’d like a future in Italy. The benches of the big European clubs are usually decided between March and April and I am open to an important project in Italy, Spain, England or Germany.

“We’ll see what happens.”

Pochettino: 'Napoli most beautiful in Europe'

https://www.football-italia.net/117816/pochettino-napoli-most-beautiful-europe

Feb 27, 2018

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said Napoli “play the most beautiful football in Europe,” but won’t underestimate Juventus.

Spurs fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Juve in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie, and the Bianconeri are battling Napoli for the Serie A title.

“Napoli can win the Scudetto,” Pochettino told Radio CRC.

“Maurizio Sarri’s side play the most beautiful football in Europe and whenever I get the chance, I always like to watch the Azzurri games.

“They will fight to the end with Juventus for the Scudetto. I have no need to give Sarri advice on how to deal with Juve, as he is already one of the best Coaches in the world.

“Sarri is Sarri and Pep Guardiola is Guardiola, they both have their own style that they try to improve day after day.

“We got a good result in Turin, but qualification is still wide open. We must work hard to earn our place in the Quarter-Finals.”

Last night, Napoli crushed Cagliari 5-0 in Sardinia and Jose Callejon was among those on target.

“I’ve been watching Callejon since his time in Spain and I feel very fond of him because I was his Coach at Espanyol,” added Pochettino.

“Could I be the future Coach of Napoli? I’d have to ask permission from Diego Maradona first!”

Juventus 1 Atalanta 0 (2-0 agg): Pjanic

sends Juve into Coppa Italia final

Lazio or AC Milan await in the final after Miralem Pjanic's spot kick

saw Juventus see off Atalanta's stubborn Coppa Italia challenge.

Juventus stayed in contention for a fourth consecutive domestic double as Miralem Pjanic's second-half penalty sealed a 1-0 win over Atalanta, closing out a 2-0 aggregate triumph in the Coppa Italia semi-final.

It was far from plain sailing for Massimiliano Allegri's men, with Atalanta the better side early on before Alejandro Gomez struck the post, almost capitalising upon an uncharacteristic lapse from Gianluigi Buffon.

Gomez failed to convert a spot-kick in the initial encounter and saw an impressive display go unrewarded on this occasion.

Pjanic was booked in first-half stoppage time for diving in the area but, when a more clear foul was committed by Gianluca Mancini on Blaise Matuidi, he made no mistake.

Allegri will acknowledge this was not a display to live long in the memory but, with an absorbing title tussle between Napoli and Juve poised to go to the wire, his men took another step towards their latest piece of history.

Atalanta fell behind to a Gonzalo Higuain goal within three minutes in the first leg but made an enterprising start at the Allianz Stadium – three days on from heavy snowfall causing the sides' Serie A meeting to be postponed.

Keen to make up from his first leg penalty miss, Gomez led the Atalanta charge and sent a dipping shot on to the roof of the veteran goalkeeper's net.

The Atalanta captain's playmaking skills were to the fore early on and he began a 13th-minute move before darting into the box and prodding Josip Ilicic's cross too close to Buffon.

Matuidi almost got on the end of Pjanic's dangerous free-kick, seemingly doing enough to rouse a lacklustre Juve start as Allegri's men started to pin Atalanta back.

Etrit Berisha stood firm 10 minutes before half-time to deny Mario Mandzukic – starting at centre-forward in Higuain's continued ankle-injury absence - and the visiting goalkeeper shovelled Douglas Costa's curling shot to safety, having been partially unsighted.

Experienced midfielder Claudio Marchisio was the next Juve player to test Berisha early in the second period.

A steady stream of pressure from the Serie A champions appeared set to take the tie away from Atalanta but they almost levelled the aggregate score in remarkable circumstances after 64 minutes.

Gomez ran on to the ball 35 yards from goal and found Buffon inexplicably way out of his ground, lifting a shot beyond the stranded 40-yard-old that came back off the post.

Atalanta's skipper then drilled a rasping effort over from the edge of the box before it was Costa's turn to rattle the bar from similar range at the other end, with a sweetly struck left-footed attempt.

Juventus finally had their breathing space 15 minutes from time after Mancini needlessly pulled Matuidi to ground inside the box and Pjanic succeeded where Gomez failed from 12 yards.

Key Opta Facts:

- Juventus will take part to their 18th Coppa Italia final, a record for a club in the competition.
- Juventus qualified for the fourth time in a row in a Coppa Italia final, equalling the record held by Roma and Inter (both between 2005 and 2008).
- Only Barcelona (26) have kept more clean sheets than Juventus (23) in the current season (all competitions) between clubs in top-5 European Leagues.
- The Bianconeri have kept a clean sheet in their last five Coppa Italia games, equalling their best streak in the competition (season 1964-65).

Pjanic: 'Important objective'

Miralem Pjanic said Juventus “achieved another important objective” by reaching the Coppa Italia Final, but complimented Atalanta.

His penalty made the difference in Turin, though Juve had already won the first leg 1-0 in Bergamo.

“Atalanta are a very good side, they are in the semi-final and caused problems for a lot of teams,” Pjanic told Rai Sport.

“I compliment Juve for how we are playing this season and we have achieved another important objective.”

The Bianconeri are in their fourth consecutive Final and will face Milan.

Allegri doubtful on Higuain

Feb 28, 2018

Max Allegri credits Douglas Costa with the Coppa Italia win over Atalanta and doubts Gonzalo Higuain will be able to face Tottenham.

Miralem Pjanic’s penalty proved the difference on the night, though Juve had already won the first leg 1-0 in Bergamo.

“We have to compliment the lads for what they did tonight and are doing this season. Our aim was to reach March and still be in all three tournaments,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“Now we’ve got an important game coming up in Serie A with Lazio and then must be at our best in London against Tottenham Hotspur.

“We had a few problems in the first half, as we were late closing them down on the flanks and they did well to find passes between the lines.

“In the second half, we created more going forward, as Douglas Costa put himself behind the centre-forward and that broke the game open.”

Paulo Dybala came on for the final eight minutes, but Higuain wasn’t even on the bench due to a sprained ankle. It’s a race against time to be ready for the Champions League trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

“Dybala came on well, I am happy and I’m sure he’ll be the added value to this team in the final stages of the season. As for Gonzalo Higuain, risking him for one game makes no sense. We want him back in shape going forward.

“Higuain is not available right now, he hasn’t trained for a few days and we’ll see if he is available on Saturday. That is the most important game right now, because London and Tottenham can wait. It’s not an obsession. I realise it’s an important game in a marvellous stadium and we want to progress with a good performance on the European stage, but it mustn’t be an obsession.

“There are always moments in a season where things go wrong and there are injuries, but we won’t waste time crying over spilt milk. We should always thing positive and will always find a way.

“When you are a big club, you must combine beautiful football with results. It’s a very fine line. Over the last few years, Tottenham have had the most prolific attack and the best defence, but haven’t won the Premier League. That means these statistics don’t really count in England, but they do in Italy.”

Giorgio Chiellini’s suspension has been officially confirmed, so the Juventus defender will miss the Coppa Italia final with Milan.

The centre-back picked up his second booking of the competition in yesterday’s semi-final second leg with Atalanta, incurring a suspension for the final.

There are no other suspensions for the showpiece game, though Atalanta’s Andrea Masiello and Stefan Radu of Lazio have also incurred a one match ben for next season.

Miralem Pjanic has been fined €1,500 for diving in an attempt to win a penalty in yesterday’s match, an action he was also booked for.

Gonzalo Higuain is still out of Juventus’ squad for their clash with Lazio in Serie A on Saturday.

Allegri: Dybala will start, Higuain…

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor lazio juventus 3 marzo 2018 conferenza stampa allegri

https://www.football-italia.net/117951/allegri-dybala-will-start-higuain

Mar 2, 2018

Max Allegri has confirmed that Paulo Dybala will start Juventus’ match against Lazio and is ‘optimistic’ Gonzalo Higuain will be fit for Tottenham Hotspur.

Dybala is set to start his first Juve game in two months when Juve travel to the Olimpico on Saturday, but there will be no Higuain, who is still struggling with an ankle injury.

“Higuain won’t be in the squad, but Dybala and Buffon will start. Chiellini could rest,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“Higuain trained, but for London it’s too early to say, although we’re confident and optimistic.

“He’s in pain, otherwise he would’ve come to Roma with us. We’re not thinking about Tottenham. Lazio are the priority.

“It’s a game from which we want to go out with a positive result. Lazio in extra time against Milan? That won’t affect them.

“This game gives so much motivation. It’ll be very tactical. Attention and detail will make the difference.

“The best team must be put out. We’ve lost twice to Lazio due to making mistakes, they’ve grown a lot and Inzaghi is doing a great job.

“His team have physical and technical qualities and deserve to be the position they’re in.

“It’s always difficult to play against them, they give little away and are very good off the ball.

“My contract? I’m tied until 2020, I’m happy here and I don’t see why I should leave, unless a catastrophe happens between now and the end of the season.”

Mandzukic out of Lazio-Juventus?

Mario Mandzukic has also reportedly sustained an injury, leaving Juventus with no centre-forwards against Lazio on Saturday.

It kicks off at 18.00 CET - 17.00 GMT.

The Bianconeri are already missing Gonzalo Higuain, Federico Bernardeschi and Juan Cuadrado from their attack, with only Pipita potentially able to play against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Mandzukic was due to start in Rome with support from Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa in the trident attack.

However, there are reports that the Croatia international also had a slight problem in training on Friday and wouldn’t be risked ahead of the trip to Wembley.

If that is the case, then Alex Sandro would again be used on the left side of the trident, with Dybala turned into an atypical centre-forward.

Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala are passed fit to start, while Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile aim to give Lazio a third Juventus scalp.

It kicks off at 18.00 CET - 17.00 GMT.

This is a huge fixture, as it’s third against second in Serie A and the Bianconeri can’t risk falling further behind leaders Napoli.

Both were in action on Wednesday for the Coppa Italia semi-final, but while Juve disposed of Atalanta 1-0 (2-0 on aggregate) thanks to a very debatable penalty, Lazio had to play 120 minutes and a sudden death penalty shoot-out, which they lost to Milan.

There is no time to recover, as they’re right back in action in a rainy Stadio Olimpico and seeking a third win of the season against Juve.

The Aquile beat them 3-2 in a thrilling Italian Super Cup clash in August, then ended Juve’s 57-match unbeaten home Serie A run.

Ciro Immobile is Capocannoniere and leads the attack with Luis Alberto and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, but Martin Caceres is injured and Adam Marusic suspended with Dusan Basta not 100 per cent fit.

Jordan Lukaku made a big difference coming off the bench against Juve in the Super Cup, so he gets to start.

As Lazio play with a 3-5-2 formation, Max Allegri adjusts Juventus to mirror that system, with Giorgio Chiellini, Alex Sandro and Douglas Costa are rested ahead of the Champions League trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

Stephan Lichtsteiner and Kwadwo Asamoah take wide roles, with Dybala’s return to the starting XI for the first time in over a month.

There were some concerns about Mandzukic, but the centre-forward has been passed fit to start despite a slight muscular issue in training.

It’s just as well, because Juve are missing Gonzalo Higuain, Juan Cuadrado, Federico Bernardeschi and Mattia De Sciglio.

The Bianconeri’s last Serie A defeat at the Olimpico was 2-0 in December 2013, followed by nine wins and three 1-1 draws.

Lazio: Strakosha; Luiz Felipe, De Vrij, Radu; Lulic, Parolo, Leiva, Milinkovic-Savic, Lukaku; Luis Alberto; Immobile

Lazio bench: Guerrieri, Vargic, Bastos, Basta, Patric, Murgia, Crecco, Jordao, Lukaku, Nani, Felipe Anderson, Caicedo

Juventus: Buffon; Barzagli, Rugani, Benatia; Lichtsteiner, Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi, Asamoah; Dybala, Mandzukic

Juventus bench: Szczesny, Chiellini, Howedes, Sturaro, Douglas Costa, Bentancur, Marchisio, Del Favero, Alex Sandro

Mario Mandzukic and Ciro Immobile had the best chances of the first half, but it’s still goalless between Lazio and Juventus.

The Aquile had already beaten Juve twice this season in the Italian Super Cup and Serie A, but were fresh from Wednesday’s gruelling Coppa Italia penalty shoot-out defeat to Milan after extra time. Adam Marusic was suspended with Martin Caceres and Dusan Basta injured, so Jordan Lukaku came in. Juve missed Gonzalo Higuain, Federico Bernardeschi, Juan Cuadrado and Mattia De Sciglio, but Paulo Dybala made his first start in two months. For only the second time this season in Serie A, the Bianconeri used 3-5-2 to mirror Simone Inzaghi’s system.

The Bianconeri’s last Serie A defeat at the Olimpico was 2-0 in December 2013, followed by nine wins and three 1-1 draws.

Dybala went down in the box during the opening minutes, but seemed to back into Lucas Leiva seeking contact and the referee waved play on. A long free kick found Mandzukic, but he needed to crouch and the header went over from five yards.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s header was smothered on the line, but Gigi Buffon had harder work to do on an Immobile snapshot he turned round the base of the near post, then fingertipped an in-swinging Luis Alberto corner out from under the bar.

Jordan Lukaku accidentally put the ball in his own net, but only after play had already been stopped for a foul, while at the other end Sami Khedira’s effort was deflected wide from a corner.

There were some crunching tackles before half-time, most notably Marco Parolo on Medhi Benatia and a run-up high challenge from Stephan Lichtsteiner to take out Stefan Radu.

Lazio 0-0 Juventus (Half-Time)

Lazio: Strakosha; Luiz Felipe, De Vrij, Radu; Lulic, Parolo, Leiva, Milinkovic-Savic, Lukaku; Luis Alberto; Immobile

Juventus: Buffon; Barzagli, Rugani, Benatia; Lichtsteiner, Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi, Asamoah; Dybala, Mandzukic
