Juventus use practically a full-strength line-up for their Coppa Italia semi-final against Atalanta, who rely on Papu Gomez.

The first leg kicks off in Bergamo at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT, although there is fog around the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia and concern it could descend as the night wears on.

Leonardo Spinazzola – on loan from Juventus – is still out injured, so Timothy Castagne takes that flank and Andreas Cornelius is again chosen ahead of Andrea Petagna to partner captain Gomez.

Bryan Cristante takes the trequartista role behind the strikers.

Juventus give Gigi Buffon his comeback after several weeks out with a muscular injury, his first appearance as a 40-year-old.

Max Allegri is taking the Coppa very seriously indeed, fielding practically a first-choice XI with Alex Sandro, Blaise Matuidi, Douglas Costa, Gonzalo Higuain and Mario Mandzukic.

There is still no room for Federico Bernardeschi, while Paulo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado and Benedikt Howedes are sidelined.

The second leg will be in Turin on February 28, while the other semi-final is between Milan and Lazio.

Juve are unbeaten against Atalanta since 2004, followed by four draws and 18 defeats, but they were held to a 2-2 draw in Bergamo earlier this term.

The Bianconeri have never beaten Atalanta in Bergamo during a Coppa Italia tie.

Atalanta: Berisha; Palomino, Masiello, Toloi; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Castagne; Cristante; Cornelius, Gomez

Atalanta bench: To follow

Juventus: Buffon; De Sciglio, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Douglas Costa, Higuain, Mandzukic

Juventus bench: Szczesny, Pinsoglio, Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Rugani, Asamoah, Marchisio, Sturaro, Bentancur, Bernardeschi

Gonzalo Higuain has given Juventus the half-time lead and a precious away goal in the Coppa Italia semi-final, but Gigi Buffon saved Atalanta’s penalty.

The first leg of the Coppa Italia Semi-Final was taken very seriously indeed, as both sides fielded practically a full-strength XI. Gigi Buffon made his comeback after several weeks out with a calf injury, making his first appearance as a 40-year-old and the first in the Coppa since December 2012, but Juan Cuadrado, Paulo Dybala and Benedikt Howedes were injured. The hosts missed Leonardo Spinazzola and rested Mattia Caldara.

It took two minutes and 29 seconds to break the deadlock, as Gonzalo Higuain surged forward, cut inside past two defenders and curled a low right-foot finish into the far bottom corner from 12 yards. It was the quickest Juventus goal of the season in all competition.

Atalanta thought they had the equaliser when VAR was used to award a penalty for Medhi Benatia’s handling offence on an Andreas Cornelius flick, but Papu Gomez saw his spot-kick saved by 40-year-old Buffon. It was the 20th penalty save of SuperGigi’s career, but the first in regular time for a Coppa fixture.

Blaise Matuidi had two promising opportunities deflected over the bar.

Atalanta 0-1 Juventus (Half-Time)

Atalanta: Berisha; Palomino, Masiello, Toloi; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Castagne; Cristante; Cornelius, Gomez

Juventus: Buffon; De Sciglio, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Douglas Costa, Higuain, Mandzukic

ATALANTA 0 JUVENTUS 1: HIGUAIN CUTS

Juventus will take a slender advantage into their Coppa Italia semi-final second leg against Atalanta after securing a 1-0 win at a fog-laden Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia.

Massimiliano Allegri's side did not quite show the form that had seen them win their previous eight games - a run that has seen them concede just one goal -  but comfortably held their hosts at arm's length for much of the match.

Gonzalo Higuain - clearly buoyed after ending his six-game goal drought against Chievo on Saturday - got them off to a blistering start with a fine goal after just three minutes.

The hosts rarely threatened their more illustrious opponents, but Alejandro Gomez wasted a golden opportunity to pull them level in the 24th minute when his penalty was thwarted by Gianluigi Buffon.

Chances were at a premium in a desparately poor second half, with Juventus seemingly content to take a narrow lead into the second leg at the Allianz Stadium on February 28.

Buffon was making his first appearance since the 1-0 win over Napoli on December 1 and would have scarcely seen Higuain's superb early opener, given the thickness of the fog in Bergamo.

And given the dense fog in Bergamo, it is unlikely that the legendary stopper would have seen much of Higuain's superb early opener.

The 30-year-old collected Miralem Pjanic’s pass just outside the penalty area, shimmied past two defenders and stroked a composed finish into the bottom left corner of Etrit Berisha's net for his 11th goal of the campaign.

A clearly shell-shocked Atalanta struggled to find their footing in the game after that early blow but were handed the chance to level midway through the first half.

After reviewing video footage, referee Paolo Valeri deemed Medhi Benatia to have deliberately handled the ball inside the area. From the resulting spot-kick, Gomez could only conspire to deliver a belated present to Buffon, giving him ample time to get down and repel his tame effort.

Gomez's wastefulness should have twice been punished before the interval, but Higuain and Blaise Matuidi both thrashed shots over the crossbar from promising positions.

.@gianluigibuffon has now made 20 penalty saves in his club career #NumeroUno #ForzaJuve #AtalantaJuve

Any thoughts of Juventus running away with the tie were soon dispelled by a tepid start to the second half, with Atalanta refusing to throw bodies forward in search of an equaliser.

When gaps did start to appear in the hosts’ backline, Mario Mandzukic bundled a header wide and Higuain dragged a low effort past the post.

Atalanta almost found an unlikely leveller with two minutes remaining as the under-worked Buffon raced off his line to block Hans Hateboer’s shot and preserve Juve’s lead ahead of an intriguing second leg.

Key Opta Facts:

- Juventus have conceded only one goal in their last 14 games played (all competitions).
- Gianluigi Buffon saved his 20th penalty for Juve, the first in Coppa Italia (excluding extra time and a penalty shoot-out).
- Gonzalo Higuain's goal was the fastest of Juventus' season (after 2' 29'') in the 2017/18 season (all competitions).

Stephan Lichtsteiner has been reinstated in the Juventus Champions League squad, with Benedikt Howedes out.

The Swiss full-back was left out of the 23-man squad for the group stages, as was Croatian winger Marko Pjaca.

The latter has been sent on loan to Schalke 04, but Lichtsteiner has been reinstated in Max Allegri’s squad for the knockout stages.

Benedikt Howedes, who has managed just one appearance so far due to injuries, has been removed from the squad.

FIGC prosecutor a Napoli fan

Feb 2, 2018

The FIGC’s prosecutor has stirred controversy by admitting he wants Napoli to win the Scudetto this season.

Giuseppe Pecoraro was born in Naples and notably gave Juventus President Andrea Agnelli a one-year ban earlier in the season for his alleged role in selling tickets to ultras.

“Which team do I support? On Sundays, the team of my heart are Napoli,” he told Rai 1.

“On other days, every team are the same to me. Will Napoli win the Scudetto this season? We hope so. Us Neapolitans hope so.”

The remarks have led many on social media to not only condemn Pecoraro but call for his resignation due to a possible conflict of interest.

Allegri: 'Bernardeschi has to play'

https://www.football-italia.net/116647/allegri-bernardeschi-has-play

Feb 3, 2018

Massimiliano Allegri confessed Juventus are forced to start Federico Bernardeschi against Sassuolo amid an injury crisis, as Douglas Costa misses out.

It kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

There is an injury crisis in Turin, missing Paulo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado, Benedikt Howedes and probably also Douglas Costa, while Bernardeschi is not fully fit either.

“Douglas Costa is very unlikely to take part, we’ll see today. He had a knock to the calf muscle and there are risks to letting him play,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Bernardeschi had a knock, so it’s just an issue of pain. We’ll see today and tomorrow morning, but he’s more likely to play than Douglas Costa. If both are out, then I’ll find 11 players to start in one way or another. It could mean moving to 3-5-2 or 4-4-2, but it’s an issue of characteristics.

“Naturally if Dybala, Cuadrado and Douglas Costa are out… Bernardeschi is the only one left, so he has to grit his teeth and play regardless. Unless he feels enormous levels of pain, he will play.

“If Bernardeschi doesn’t make it, we could play with someone a little deeper, or simply use different characteristics in the position of right winger. Otherwise it’d be shaking things up that don’t need shaking up right now.

“There are options, such as Stephan Lichtsteiner more advanced or Stefano Sturaro in the front three. The important thing is to take the right approach, because we’re coming off a fine game against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia and need to get the three points tomorrow.

“We’re in the second half of the season and cannot afford errors, because we are only one point behind Napoli and must remain in their slipstream. I always said the Scudetto will be decided in the final month, because we’ve got three head-to-head clashes in the last five rounds.

“The only risk we run against Sassuolo is losing concentration against a team that is technically-gifted and added more physicality to the side with Khouma Babacar. In recent weeks they’ve beaten Inter and drawn with Roma.

“At the end of the day, the Scudetto is won by the strongest team. Obviously, there is also a component of luck, but whoever wins the title will have deserved it.”

Douglas Costa out for Juventus

Feb 3, 2018

Douglas Costa, Paulo Dybala and Juan Cuadrado are out for Juventus against Sassuolo, while Federico Bernardeschi remains in doubt.

It kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

The Bianconeri are in the midst of an injury crisis that has ruled out Benedikt Howedes, Dybala, Cuadrado and Douglas Costa.

Max Allegri confessed in his Press conference that Bernardeschi will start tomorrow unless he is in immense pain, because there are no other wide alternatives on the right.

In the circumstances, Allegri has added 20-year-old sensation Ferdinando Del Sole to the squad for tomorrow’s game.

Juventus squad for Sassuolo: Buffon; Szczesny, Pinsoglio; De Sciglio, Chiellini, Benatia, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Rugani, Lichtsteiner; Pjanic, Khedira, Marchisio, Matuidi, Asamoah, Sturaro, Bentancur, Bernardeschi; Higuain, Mandzukic, Del Sole

Juventus - Sassuolo Match Preview

https://www.football-italia.net/SerieA/match/preview/106593

Feb 3, 2018

After taking advantage in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg on Tuesday evening, Juve’s attention returns to applying pressure on Serie A leaders Napoli and they should have an easy time against a Sassuolo side without a win in four games.

It seems like only last month the 2017-18 season was starting but, somehow, we are already at the first crucial stage of the football season. As usual, Juventus are still in contention for all three major trophies and Gonzalo Higuain’s wonderful solo effort against Atalanta all but confirmed their place in the Coppa Italia final.

Sassuolo on the other hand have been enduring a difficult season, especially of late as their form has taken a nosedive since December’s 1-0 victory over Inter. The Neroverdi have also taken a great risk in swapping a key man in Diego Falcinelli for Fiorentina’s talented but largely inconsistent Khouma Babacar. Although the Senegalese forward will be almost guaranteed more minutes at the Mapei Stadium, Babacar has yet to replicate the form he showed at Modena in Serie A. With only 27 goals in 97 top flight appearances, the former Racing Santander man may not be what Giuseppe Iachini needs, despite his impressive goals-per-minute ratio.

Although Juventus’ advantage in quality is undeniable, Sassuolo presents an interesting tactical battle, with both sides playing very different variants of the 4-3-3 shape in recent games. Juventus will likely press high to control possession and encourage Mattia De Sciglio and Kwadwo Asamoah to overlap the wingers as often as possible, while in the centre Blaise Matuidi and Sami Khedira will sit wide and deep so Miralem Pjanic can push forward and dictate play.

Sassuolo will however get full-backs Pol Lirola and Federico Peluso to sit deep and protect the spaces in defence, while the midfield will include three more defensive options in Simone Missiroli, Francesco Magnanelli and Alfred Duncan, who will likely sit deep and play long balls towards the front three. New signings Mauricio Lemos and Babacar could start while Edoardo Goldaniga sits out through suspension. Although it will likely be damage limitation from Iachini from the first minute, expect Juventus to win to nil.

Keep an eye on: Domenico Berardi (Sassuolo) — Every season there is the case of a footballer who left a club too early and potentially damaged their career before it had truly started. With Domenico Berardi we have the opposite case of a wonderfully gifted forward, but he may have left it too late to leave. The 23-year-old already has 56 Serie A goals to his name and several giant killing performances, but with only two goals in 16 games this season, the Italy U21 international’s star seems to be dropping. However, Berardi’s talent is undeniable, and as he traditionally saves his best for the biggest games, expect a meaningful contribution.

Form guide: Juventus (W W W W W) Sassuolo (L D L D W)

Last season: Juventus 3-1 Sassuolo

Stat Fact: Sassuolo have faced Juventus nine times in Serie A history and have never avoided defeat in Turin. The Neroverdi got a 1-0 home win in October 2015 but have lost their last four games against the Old Lady, conceding 10 goals in the process, scoring only two in return.

Top Tip: Juventus to score in both halves

Juventus (probable): Buffon; De Sciglio, Benatia, Chiellini, Asamoah; Khedira, Matuidi, Pjanic; Bernardeschi, Higuain, Mandzukic

Suspended: None

Sassuolo (probable): Consigli; Lirola, Lemos, Acerbi, Peluso; Missiroli, Magnanelli, Duncan; Berardi, Babacar, Politano

Suspended: Goldaniga

Juventus 7 Sassuolo 0: Higuain

hat-trick puts Napoli on notice

Juventus continued their fine form with a thrashing of Sassuolo,

Gonzalo Higuain in particular enjoying his day out.

Gonzalo Higuain scored a hat-trick as Juventus sounded an ominous warning to rivals Napoli by overwhelming Sassuolo in a comprehensive 7-0 victory at Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

The champions scored four times in a one-sided first 45 minutes, and added three more through Higuain in the second half, to ease to their 10th consecutive victory in all competitions, bolstering their Serie A title defence.

Massimiliano Allegri named Gianluigi Buffon for his first league appearance since December and the 40-year-old could hardly have asked for a more comfortable clean sheet, his side's sixth straight in all competitions.

Alex Sandro opened the scoring after nine minutes and the contest was all but over by the half-hour mark as Sami Khedira hit a quickfire double to improve his season tally to six.

Miralem Pjanic's fine fourth prompted Allegri, who was forced to withdraw the injured Blaise Matuidi amid the goal glut, to make a further two changes at the break in a sign of the comfort enjoyed by the Bianconeri.

Higuain stole the spotlight with a classy treble – his first for the club – after the restart to further compound the away side's misery and cap off a win that momentarily moves Juve two points ahead of Napoli, who visit Benevento later on Sunday.

With Paulo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado and Douglas Costa all still sidelined by injury, Juve were searching for fresh avenues to goal and immediately found one in Alex Sandro.

The full-back pounced on a kind ricochet inside the area to punish the visitors for failing to clear a short corner.

Sassuolo stemmed the damage for a further 15 minutes until Khedira single-handedly opened the floodgates midway through the half.

Alex Sandro's flick-on from a Pjanic corner enabled the Germany international to open his account with a simple tap-in and he made it 3-0 moments later, exposing a high line to finish coolly past Andrea Consigli.

Juve's superb start did sour somewhat as Matuidi limped off between those two strikes, but that minor frustration was softened by a fourth first-half goal.

Pjanic – provider of Khedira's second – this time got in on the scoring, rounding off a thoroughly dominant 45 minutes by firing a sweet strike into the bottom-left corner from just outside the area.

Allegri opted to safeguard against further injuries by removing Khedira and Daniele Rugani at the interval and the changes hardly appeared to upset his side's rhythm.

Higuain almost got on the end of Mario Mandzukic's low cross, while Federico Bernardeschi slammed a low effort into Consigli.

But Juve did get their fifth in the 63rd minute when Higuain expertly fired through Federico Peluso and into the net for his 11th of the Serie A season.

The Argentina international took centre stage from there, rounding Consigli to convert again in the 74th minute before he claimed the match ball with his seventh goal in his last five top-flight meetings Sassuolo late in proceedings.

Key Opta facts:

- Juventus scored seven goals in a Serie A game for the first time since November 2014 versus Parma.

- The last time Juventus scored at least four goals at home in the first half in Serie A was in April 2008.

- Juventus have scored nine goals from corners, a record in Serie A this season.

- Sami Khedira has scored six league goals this term, having nettedd five in each of his previous two Serie A seasons.

- Gianluigi Buffon started a Serie A games 65 days after the last one.

Juventus in Seventh Heaven

Feb 4, 2018

Juventus earned their biggest win of the season, humiliating Sassuolo 7-0 with a Gonzalo Higuain hat-trick and Sami Khedira brace.

The Bianconeri could temporarily go top awaiting Napoli’s trip to Benevento this evening, but had an injury crisis to deal with, missing Paulo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado, Douglas Costa and Benedikt Howedes. Federico Bernardeschi had to start despite not being fully fit either, but Andrea Barzagli pulled out in the warm-up. Edoardo Goldaniga was suspended for the visitors, so January buys Mauricio Lemos and Khouma Babacar were thrown straight in for their debuts.

Sassuolo had lost all four previous Serie A trips to Turin, scoring one goal and conceding nine.

Andrea Consigli flew to palm a Sami Khedira effort away for a corner, but on the resulting corner Alex Sandro finished off a series of ricochets by rifling in from eight yards.

Gonzalo Higuain ran half the length of the pitch to see his lob slapped out from under the bar and on the resulting corner, Alex Sandro flicked it on for Khedira to tap in from five yards.

However, there was bad news when Blaise Matuidi went off injured to make way for Claudio Marchisio.

It didn’t disturb Khedira, who added a second by springing the very high Sassuolo offside trap on a Miralem Pjanic assist to place an angled drive across Consigli.

Sassuolo finally had their first chance of the game on 36 minutes, Gigi Buffon denying Pol Lirola from close range.

It was a brief respite from the siege, as Miralem Pjanic added a fourth with his ferocious strike from distance on a short Mauricio Lemos clearance.

Higuain’s angled drive flashed just wide, as it really was one-way traffic. Curiously, Max Allegri used up all his substitutions by the start of the second half.

Babacar just failed to get on the end of a smart Domenico Berardi cross, but Higuain added a fifth with his precise angled drive.

Higuain completed his brace by controlling an inspired Marchisio cross-field pass and waltzing round the goalkeeper to deposit into an empty net.

Pipita completed his hat-trick thanks to his smart give-and-go with Bernardeschi, dinking the finish over Consigli from a tight angle.

Higuain: ‘Hat-trick inevitable’

Gonzalo Higuain believes it was always inevitable he would score a hat-trick after bagging his first treble in a Juventus shirt.

The Argentine scored three times in the final half-hour of the Old Lady’s 7-0 demolition of Sassuolo to send his side to the top of Serie A.

And the forward believes his recent form is the result of hard work earlier in the season.

“Sooner or later the hat-trick had to come. I am happy and calm working,” Higuain told Italian television after the match at Juventus Stadium.

“When you work, the results come. When I wasn’t playing before I was still happy with the performances. I needed to work hard and now the fruit of it is showing.

“Now it is important to have five months on top form. We have taken home an important result and now we think about Friday.”

Juve’s next match is a trip to Florence to take on rivals Fiorentina, after which they resume their Champions League campaign against Tottenham Hotspur.

Allegri: 'Juve reaching peak'

Feb 4, 2018

Max Allegri warns Juventus “will change system again going forward” and are starting to find their peak after beating Sassuolo 7-0.

“We have to compliment the lads on how they interpreted the game, as we were coming off a Coppa Italia semi-final and there was the risk of losing concentration,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“We cannot afford any slip-ups with Napoli marching on so strong. It was important to win today so we could definitively break away from the chasing pack, who are now 14 points away.

“I am happy for Gonzalo Higuain’s hat-trick and the whole team. Many players are beginning to reach their ideal form. Blaise Matuidi seems to have a muscular issue, but we have players like Claudio Marchisio and Paulo Dybala who are getting closer to fitness.

“This is a different Juve to previous years. We started out with one tactical system, now we use another and I think we’ll change again going forward, because we could use more players with certain characteristics.

“There’s no secret to our success, we simply have lads with good values and want to win what feels like their first Scudetto. We want to stay on Napoli’s tails going into the sprint finish.”

Matuidi out of Spurs clash

Feb 4, 2018

Max Allegri confirms midfielder Blaise Matuidi will miss the first leg of Juventus’ Champions League clash with Tottenham.

The Frenchman had to be replaced in the 26th minute of the Old Lady’s 7-0 thrashing of Sassuolo this afternoon after picking up an injury, with Claudio Marchisio coming on in his place.

And his Coach has now admitted that the 30-year-old will not be available for the match at Juventus Stadium on February 13, as well as next Friday’s Serie A trip to Fiorentina.

“Matuidi won’t be there against Tottenham. I think it is a muscular problem,” Allegri told reporters.

There was better news elsewhere for the Juve boss, who added he expects Andrea Barzagli, Sami Khedira and Daniele Rugani to all be available moving forward.

“However, there are no problems for Barzagli, Khedira and Rugani. They have come out or haven’t played as a precaution.

“Douglas Costa will be back on Friday as well, so we have the necessary players to play.”

Costa back in Juventus training

Feb 7, 2018

Douglas Costa has returned to training with the rest of the Juventus squad, ahead of the trip to Fiorentina on Friday.

The Brazilian winger missed the win over Sassuolo at the weekend with a calf injury, and had been following a personalised training program.

Now though the Bianconeri’s official website has confirmed that Douglas Costa returned to training with his teammates at Vinovo this morning, while Stefano Sturaro worked separately.

Despite that, the winger is not expected to start at the Artemio Franchi, with Tottenham Hotspur to come in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Astori: ‘Juventus better than Napoli’

https://www.football-italia.net/116857/astori-‘juventus-better-napoli’

Feb 7, 2018

Davide Astori warns Juventus are “stronger than Napoli”, but Fiorentina can beat them if they play “the perfect match”.

The Bianconeri are one point behind Maurizio Sarri’s side at the top of the league, and can go top, at least temporarily, with a win in Florence on Friday night.

For the Viola’s fans this is one of the biggest games of the season, and the club captain spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of the match.

“On paper Juventus are clearly stronger than Napoli,” Astori cautioned.

“So there’s not a worse opponent to be facing. That said, we can’t be afraid to face Juventus.

“If they detect that we’re ‘worried’ then that’s it, goodbye. We’re dead. Of course, to get a positive result we have to play the perfect match, but it can be done.

“Gonzalo Higuain is the number one danger, Pipita is ruthless. If you give him even 30 centimetres of space he’ll punish you. His shots are sentences.

“Mario Mandzukic? In the first game he was the one who tipped the balance with his physicality.

“Douglas Costa has dribbling and speed, so we’ll need to do well and double up on their attackers.

“I like Khedira and Pjanic is one of the best in the world at free-kicks. Juventus are a winning machine.”

Federico Bernardeschi will return to the Artemio Franchi after his controversial move to Turin, the ultimate betrayal for Viola fans.

“I saw him mature in the two years we had together in the Viola shirt. He has huge margins for growth.

“On this occasion we’ll have to play on his state of mind, Federico will feel this match. He has the shots of a champion, but he’s still a boy.

“At the Franchi he can’t forget that the Viola changed his life.”

At 31, Astori is something of an elder statesman of Italian defending, how does he see the new generation?

“There are some strong ones, but they need to be lucky enough to have a Coach who promotes certain concepts, like Conte did so well at Juventus. I’m talking about defending as a unit.

"Romagnoli is strong, but he’s continually working with different Coaches. Caldarda is working with a unique Coach like Gasperini and Rugani is a good prospect but at Juventus you have to win, he can’t focus on his growth.”

Feb 8, 2018

Juventus Coach Max Allegri isn’t thinking about the Tottenham Hotspur game - “to get out of Florence with three points you need to play a serious game”.

The Bianconeri return to Champions League action on Tuesday, but first must face the febrile atmosphere of the Stadio Artemio Franchi as they take on Fiorentina tomorrow night.

“We’re thinking about tomorrow,” Allegri underlined in his pre-match Press conference.

“It’s an important match for us to get three points, and for them it’s a match of great rivalry, the match that they experience with huge desire, with the enthusiasm to beat Juventus.

“Last year they succeeded because we lost 2-1, so it’ll be a difficult game, also because they’re coming off a good win.

“They have a young team with great quality. Fiorentina are second in the Italian league for shots per game, and they have a young player in [Federico] Chiesa who has these characteristics.

“So to get out of Florence with three points you need to play a serious game. Only after that will we rest, recover, and think about Tottenham.”

It’s a difficult 10 days for Juventus, as they face the Viola, then Spurs, then the Derby della Mole with Torino.

“To get to the end and win the league I think you need to pick up a lot of points, given the average that Napoli are doing and that Juventus are doing.

“If we think that from tomorrow until the game with Spal - because we have to go to Ferrara, it’s the last game before the international break - we have a lot of matches and games against good teams.

“You have to take them one at a time, tomorrow the best team will be on the pitch to play the match and win.

“Then, after tomorrow, we’ll think about Spurs and we’ll face them with the intention of progressing and building the foundations to do that.”

Massimiliano Allegri confirms Juventus will be without Paulo Dybala for tomorrow’s Fiorentina game, but Douglas Costa will be available.

It was reported today that La Joya was approaching a return, but that he wouldn’t be called for the trip to Florence.

Today the Coach addressed the media in his pre-match Press conference, and was asked about the injured, as well as the possibility of Claudio Marchisio starting tomorrow.

“There’s a chance of seeing Marchisio, but we saw Claudio on Sunday too, he played from 20 minutes in place of [Blaise] Matuidi,” Allegri pointed out.

“I’ll have to see training today to decide whether I’ll make a change or not. There’s no emergency though, because pretty much everyone is back.

“[Juan] Cuadrado is still out but we all knew that would be the case, Dybala, [Benedikt] Howedes and Matuidi are out then the others are available.

“Douglas is fine, but I don’t think he’ll play from the beginning because [Federico] Bernardeschi is fine and it’s only right that Bernardeschi plays in an important match like tomorrow.

“So we have plenty to play in football matches.

“Daniele Rugani? No-one needs to rest, because we played on Sunday and it’s been five days and we’re in trouble if someone needs a rest.

“They’re young, beautiful and sprightly so no rest. Rugani came off on Sunday because he had a niggle in his thigh flexor and I preferred to preserve him, because there was no need to take risks.

“I’ll have to evaluate tomorrow, the only doubt I have is on the right between [Mattia] De Sciglio and [Stephan] Lichtsteiner, with the probability that Lichtsteiner will play.

"Could Dybala be back for Tottenham? I don't know, because I haven't seen him yet.

"We'll see when he comes back to the squad, because it's one thing to train alone but it's another to train with the team and find certain rhythms.

"Then Tottenham isn't the last game of the season. If it's the last game and some is half-fit...

"Among other things it happened to me in the first Champions League final in Berlin, Barzagli was coming off an injury but we took a risk and let him play.

"But when there are 14 league games after tomorrow, another tie in the Coppa Italia and at least one more in the Champions League, why should we take risks on a player?

"We'll see. If he's fit he'll be available, then I'll have to evaluate things because I have to look at the whole season, not one game that isn't a final."

With Fiorentina, Tottenham Hotspur and Torino in the next 10 days, is this the most crucial juncture of the season?

“More than the derby, I’d go further, I’d go until the game before the international break on March 18, we’ll see what point we’re at then.

“We’ll have played a lot of games and come through a tough period, as will Napoli because Napoli have tough matches too.

“So we’ll see where we’ll be, but it’s pointless thinking about two months, three months or a month.

“The league will be decided at 16.45 - if we play in the afternoon on the final day, if not 22.45 - on May 20.”

Napoli Coach Maurizio Sarri said that Napoli have done well to keep the Scudetto race alive, as “similar to the Bundesliga, there’s a club that is clearly stronger than the others”.

“I’d just say that the numbers tell you Napoli are a great team,” Allegri responded.

“They’re doing great things, they’re scoring goals and winning so they’re a good team.

“Serie A is not like the Bundesliga because there’s a good duel between Juventus and Napoli.

“A lot, indeed 99 per cent, of why Napoli are there is because of Sarri, so that’s honour to him because he’s taken Napoli to great levels, they’re fighting against Juventus, a team that has won for six years in a row.

“This is a team which has had excellent results and has changed a lot compared to them [Napoli], almost all their players arrived with [Rafa] Benitez.

“So they’ve given continuity to their work and he [Sarri] has done really well to refine that and above all given them a style of play that is really nice to watch.”

Juventus winning a seventh Scudetto in a row would be “extraordinary” says Max Allegri, as “Napoli have concentrated all their strength on the league”.

The two sides are separated by just a point at the top of Serie A, with the Bianconeri travelling to face Fiorentina tomorrow night.

Last weekend they beat Sassuolo 7-0, with some dubbing the Neroverdi ‘Scansuolo’, a pun on the verb “scansare” which means “to step aside”.

“It doesn’t make me smile or irritate me,” Allegri shrugged in today’s Press conference.

“I’ll just say that in the end the best team wins the league and deserves to win the league.

“Each team plays to the characteristics of its players and I always say - I’m becoming boring - that within a season you can’t always have great performances in a match.

“Games last 100 minutes, there’s half an hour where you have to play one way, then an quarter of an hour where maybe you have to play another way.

“There are many small facets within a game, and little moments during a season. We have to continue our journey, our journey toward May 27.

“Winning is not easy, only one team can win and it’s normal that the others are there. Right now it’s Napoli, who have concentrated all their strength on the league because they got knocked out of the Coppa Italia and they’re out of the Champions League, so they’ve focused all their strength on the league.

“For us it’s an important challenge, a challenge within a challenge, i.e reaching the seventh Scudetto.

“That would be something which goes beyond any result, of any plausible imagination.

“If we succeed, the lads will have given me, the fans and the club an extraordinary result, above all by beating a great team like Napoli.”

Tomorrow will be Allegri’s 200th match as Juve Coach.

“I’d say I’m happy with the results the lads have given me in these three-and-a-half years with Juventus, with the work of the club, and for the rest we go forward.

“Everything comes down to results, so far we’ve got them and we want to continue to get them from now on.

“We’ve got an important game tomorrow, and I’d say we’re getting to the most beautiful part of the season.

“You’ve got knockout games - not in the league, because there are still 15 games to go, with 45 points available - but we’ve got a knockout tie with Tottenham and then Atalanta in the Coppa Italia where we’ll either make the final or go home.

“So I think this is a nice period, you need to approach it with great enthusiasm.

“The team is good physically and especially mentally, so there are all the right things in place to be able to do well. Then, as always, it takes a bit of luck.”

Federico Bernardeschi will return to the Stadio Artemio Franchi for the first time tomorrow, having left to join Juve in the summer.

“I think he made a professional choice, he didn’t run away from Florence. If I were at Fiorentina I’d welcome him in a certain way,” Allegri said.

“Then it’s normal that they’ll chant against him, because they’re playing against Juventus and they want Fiorentina to win, so they’ll want to cause him problems on a psychological level.

“Federico is very calm though, among other things he’s a very light-hearted lad. I think this is a particular game for him, but also a good one.”

Mario Mandzukic praised Allegri yesterday, stating that he knows how to listen.

“I think it’s important to know how to listen, but it’s also the hardest thing. I learned it in my old age.

“Before I listened less, now much more.”

Finally, Allegri was asked if he could play a 4-4-2, with Bernardeschi and Douglas Costa on the wings and Gonzalo Higuain and Mandzukic up-front.

“Not tomorrow, no. Yes, yes when Costa’s there, although there’s something with Douglas, we have to see if we can do it or not…

“What is it? Let’s see later, goodbye!”

Douglas Costa is in the Juventus squad travelling to Fiorentina for tomorrow’s game along with Andrea Barzagli.

It kicks off on Friday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT.

The Bianconeri have recuperated Douglas Costa after he missed the 7-0 thrashing of Sassuolo.

Barzagli was originally named in the starting XI for that game, only to pull out in the warm-up.

Stefano Sturaro has also shaken off a knock to make the trip.

However, Paulo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado, Blaise Matuidi and Benedikt Howedes miss out.

Bernardeschi to face Fiorentina

https://www.football-italia.net/116939/bernardeschi-face-fiorentina

Feb 9, 2018

Federico Bernardeschi will face a hostile reception when he returns to the Stadio Artemio Franchi tonight, having left Fiorentina for Juventus in the summer.

A 7-0 mauling of struggling Sassuolo last weekend saw Juventus record a sixth straight win in 2018. Having already taken control of their Coppa Italia semi-final with Atalanta, a big win at the Allianz Stadium against the Neroverdi was ideal preparation for Max Allegri’s men as they step into their biggest week of the season so far.  A heavy schedule of games and injuries to key players has forced Juve to dig deep into their squad and this Friday’s clash against Fiorentina will see subtle changes to the starting XI.

Juventus coach Max Allegri will have used the five days between games to assess his squad. The Old Lady were dealt a blow at the weekend with news that midfield engine Blaise Matuidi is set to miss around a month of action. The game against Sassuolo also saw veteran defender Andrea Barzagli pull out injured in the warm-up while his replacement Daniele Rugani was removed at half time as a precautionary measure, but both will be in the squad travelling to Florence.

In Thursday’s Press conference the Juventus boss confirmed the absence of Blaise Matuidi along with longer term casualties Juan Cuadrado and Benedikt Höwedes. Rumours had circulated that Paulo Dybala could be in contention for the first time this year, however Allegri confirmed that La Joya remains unavailable.

Gianluigi Buffon will continue in goal following his recent return and will hope to make it three consecutive clean sheets in the process. Three of the back four will remain from the game against Sassuolo, an improving Alex Sandro will keep his place at left-back while at the heart of defence will be the formidable pairing of Giorgio Chiellini and Medhi Benatia.

The only doubt remains at right back, Italian international Mattia De Scgilio has started the last three and is slowly proving he is a dependable option at the back; however his Coach has said he will look to rotate him here in favour of Stephan Lichtsteiner.

After another impressive display, midfield maestro Miralem Pjanic will attempt to continue his fine season and it is hard to imagine Juventus functioning the same without the Bosnian in the team. With two goals at the weekend taking his tally to six for the season, German international Sami Khedira will continue alongside Miralem Pjanic. The Juventus number 6 is not always a popular choice amongst the fans but for Mister Allegri he is Mr. Reliable in these games. There is a place available in the midfield three following the injury to Blaise Matuidi and it is Claudio Marchisio that is favourite to take his place. In what’s been another start stop campaign for the Italian, it was Marchisio that replaced his French counterpart after 20 minutes at the weekend, players and fans alike will be hoping this is the Italian’s opportunity to have a run in the team. Other options for the midfield include Stefano Sturaro or Uruguayan international Rodrigo Bentancur.

The frontmen pick themselves for this encounter. Following his hat-trick at the weekend, in-form Gonzalo Higuaín has now scored five goals in his last three games and will be raring to go. Alongside “Pipita” will be the ever present Mario Mandžukić and with the returning Douglas Costa unlikely to be risked from the start, it was confirmed by Max Allegri that Tuscan native Federico Bernardeschi will keep his place on the right of the Juventus attack. It will be a return to his old club for Bernardeschi and he can expect a hostile welcome from the Viola faithful as he steps onto the pitch at the Artemio Franchi.

Juventus expected XI (4-3-3) Buffon – Lichtsteiner, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro – Khedira, Pjanic, Marchisio – Bernardeschi, Higuaín, Mandžukić.

Fiorentina hope Federico Chiesa and Giovanni Simeone can follow in their father’s footsteps by tripping up old rivals Juventus.

The Bianconeri have the chance to temporarily take top spot ahead of Napoli’s clash with third-placed Lazio tomorrow night.

It’s a real grudge match at the Stadio Franchi, as the Viola have always seen Juventus as their arch rivals and it’s never just a game for them.

Federico Bernardeschi returns to Florence for the first time since completing his transfer to the Old Lady, adding further spice to the evening.

Douglas Costa and Andrea Barzagli are available again after skipping the 7-0 demolition job of Sassuolo, though Paulo Dybala, Blaise Matuidi, Juan Cuadrado and Benedikt Howedes are still sidelined.

Max Allegri must balance the Scudetto demands with their Champions League commitments, as Juve host Tottenham Hotspur in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.

Bernardeschi therefore starts against his former teammates with Gonzalo Higuain and Mario Mandzukic in the increasingly consolidated 4-3-3 system with Claudio Marchisio pulling the midfield strings.

Juve have conceded only one goal in their last 10 Serie A games, against Hellas Verona, with Wojciech Szczesny and then Gigi Buffon wearing the gloves.

Fiorentina had been without a win in four rounds ahead of their hard-fought 2-1 victory away to Bologna, a game that saw both teams score ‘Olympic goals’ direct from the corner flag until Chiesa’s decider.

German Pezzella returns from suspension, though Vincent Laurini is still struggling with injury. Gil Dias again gets the nod rather than Cyril Thereau, but all eyes are on the pair of very famous names. The sons of Enrico Chiesa and Diego Simeone will be eager to follow in the footsteps of their fathers by damaging the Juventus cause.

Last season, Fiorentina won this fixture 2-1, for Juve’s first loss here since 2013.

Fiorentina: Sportiello; Milenkovic, Pezzella, Astori, Biraghi; Benassi, Badelj, Veretout; Gil Dias, Simeone, Chiesa

Subs: To follow...

Juventus: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic, Marchisio; Bernardeschi, Higuain, Mandzukic

Subs: Szczesny, Pinsoglio, De Sciglio, Barzagli, Rugani, Asamoah, Sturaro, Bentancur, Douglas Costa

Fiorentina 0 Juventus 2: Bernardeschi

haunts Viola as Juve go top

Juventus return to Serie A's summit after beating Fiorentina 2-0,

with former Viola star Federico Bernardeschi scoring on his return.

Federico Bernardeschi had the last laugh as he returned to his former club Fiorentina with their historic rivals Juventus and scored in a 2-0 victory which puts the reigning champions top of Serie A.

The 23-year-old angered Fiorentina fans in pre-season when he crossed the rivalry that was intensified by Robert Baggio's switch to Juve in 1990 and he silenced the jeers with a second-half free-kick, before Gonzalo Higuain wrapped things up late on in Massimiliano Allegri's 200th game in charge.

For the most part, the first half was a cagey affair, with a controversial VAR decision which ultimately denied Fiorentina an early penalty chief among the few highlights.

The best opportunity in a first period otherwise devoid of them fell to the hosts just before the break and Juve could count themselves lucky to escape, as the lively Gil Dias fired against the right-hand post of Gianluigi Buffon, who was making his 500th league appearance for the Turin giants.

Initially, proceedings were not hugely improved upon the restart, but Bernardeschi – who has been hit-and-miss since costing Juve €40million – managed to heat things up, netting 10 minutes into the second half.

Juve were forced to withstand plenty of pressure towards the end, though their ever-dependable backline held firm and they hit Fiorentina on the break, as Higuain rounded things off four minutes from the end to move them two points ahead of Napoli at the top of the table, with Maurizio Sarri's men facing Lazio on Saturday.

Although Juve dictated possession during the early exchanges, Fiorentina did an excellent job of restricting their flow of chances, with a Claudio Marchisio effort from 30 yards – which was easily saved by Marco Sportiello – all they could muster.

Fiorentina then seemed to be presented with the perfect chance to take the lead 18th minutes in, as Giorgio Chiellini was penalised for appearing to handle Marco Benassi's cross inside his own area.

But, after much deliberation, Jordan Veretout was denied the opportunity to take the kick, as VAR identified Benassi in an offside when he received the ball even though the ball appeared to be played to him by Alex Sandro.

Despite that disappointment, Fiorentina seemed to improve thereafter and went agonisingly close to the opener six minutes before the break - Dias breezing past Stephan Lichtsteiner and shooting right-footed on to the left-hand post.

Juve were no better as an attacking entity at the start of the second half, with the pattern of the game initially unchanged.

But Bernardeschi's quick feet on the edge of the box in the 56th minute secured Juve a free-kick and the Italy international picked out the bottom-left corner, exploiting Sportiello's poor positioning.

That forced Fiorentina to become more forward-thinking, though that almost resulted in Juve catching them on the break 11 minutes later – Mario Mandzukic shooting just wide after Douglas Costa's cut-back.

Buffon had to be alert soon after, rushing out to block Cyril Thereau's close-range effort following a driving run courtesy of Giovanni Simeone.

And Juve capitalised on Fiorentina's desperation for an equaliser, hitting them on the break towards the end as Higuian coolly swept past Sportiello for his sixth goal in four games across all competitions.

Allegri: Juve must play better, VAR…

Max Allegri admits Juventus “must play better” against Tottenham Hotspur than they did at Fiorentina and claims “there was a foul” before the VAR controversy.

Goals from Federico Bernardeschi and Gonzalo Higuain fired Juve to a 2-0 win on Friday, but it came at the cost of a Fiorentina penalty being reversed by VAR, amidst a lack of clarity over whether the decision was an offside call or foul on Alex Sandro.

“It wasn’t easy to stay focused. We have to congratulate the lads and Fiorentina,” the Coach told Premium Sport.

“We started well, but they applied pressure. We played too much on the lines and helped them.

“We risked [conceding] a couple of times and had to end the first half without any damage. The second half was different.

“Matches aren’t all the same. There can be moments of fogginess. The team did well, Dias hitting the post came from a breakaway, where we went wrong.

“In the second half, we didn’t suffer too much. We knew the difficulties we’d face, they’re a young team with good qualities.

“Juventus, when [Fiorentina] began to defend, played in the right way. I must congratulate our lads for what they’re doing.

“We have Napoli, who are behind us, but we mustn’t lose track of the difficulties.

“Costa? I’d say that we found numerical superiority in the middle after he came on. Players like him let you play on an open field.

“The penalty? I was just waiting for the referee’s decision, it's him who decides and it’s happened on other occasions.

“It was a long way, but luckily the penalty was annulled. After that, we started to defend better.

“Did I understand the referee’s decision? It wasn’t clear, I thought there was a foul before it. [Officials] are much more careful with TV images. I only know that I was there waiting.

“Bernardeschi key against Tottenham? We’ll see, we have to recover first. Going through would be nice, but we have to be careful.

“Spurs have excellent technique, but Champions League games are tight. We must play better.

“When will Dybala return? Paulo’s working in a different way to the squad, but we hope he’ll be available.

“It’s very difficult. I can’t take risks with him as he’s a very important player and we need him in the best condition.

“We have four players out, but we can’t rush them back and and then lose them even longer.”

Gonzalo Higuain felt Juventus took “a big step towards the Scudetto” with their 2-0 win at Fiorentina on Friday.

Federico Bernardeschi scored a free kick on his return to Fiorentina, before Higuain killed them off with a late finish to provisionally move Juve top of Serie A.

“It’s never easy to win here,” the striker told Sky Sport Italia.

“We didn’t have a brilliant game, but we didn’t concede either. We won and I think it’s a big step towards the Scudetto.

“Did I expect Bernardeschi’s goal? Yes, and I’m very happy for him.”

Asked about his goal by Premium Sport, he replied: “It’s always important, I’m always calm.”

Bernardeschi: 'I respect my fans'

Federico Bernardeschi defended his celebrations when scoring for Juventus against his old club Fiorentina. “I respect my fans.”

The winger was on target with a free kick in Friday night’s 2-0 victory, his first return to the Stadio Franchi since a move to Turin, and celebrated wildly.

He seemed to wind up the Viola supporters even before kick-off, staring at the Curva Fiesole section during the warm-up.

“A professional makes choices and has to pursue them in the direction he feels is right,” Bernardeschi told Sky Sport Italia.

“Obviously, there are those who are going to be in favour and those who are against. I think certain reactions ought to be avoided, but that’s part of football.

“I am a Juventus player and I respect my fans. Besides, I did nothing outlandish and I think I showed respect for everyone.

“I celebrated because a player must respect his own fans. I will always thank the club Fiorentina, because they let me grow and mature, so if I have arrived at Juventus, it is also thanks to them.

“I will never lack for gratitude towards the club, but a professional must follow his ideas and show respect towards his own fans.

“I thank all my teammates who were close to me during a night that was not easy and ensured I was able to stay calm. It’s a tough period of fixtures and now we must focus on a great performance against Tottenham in the Champions League.”

Can Spurs surprise the Old Lady?

Tottenham Hotspur already stunned Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund,

so Juventus ought to be wary of Harry Kane and co.

After defeating Fiorentina 2-0 in what was a complete second-half performance from Juventus, how will the Bianconeri deal with their crucial Champions League clash against Tottenham Hotspur?

Occupied in a two-way Scudetto race with Napoli, Juve will need to emulate the pragmatic approach they have been using in this Serie A campaign when they host an underrated Tottenham in the first leg of the Last 16 on Tuesday evening.

This match-up will be the first time these sides play against each other in European club competition, which makes it an intriguing affair.

Juventus may be satisfied facing Spurs rather than battling with the big guns Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester City, but that’s probably what Real Madrid thought too.

There is no denying that the English outfit was one of the Champions League’s top performers in the group stages, as the statistics don’t lie.

Bagging upset wins against European Champions Real Madrid and an experienced Borussia Dortmund propelled the Premier League side to a first-place finish in Group H, amassing more points than any club in the competition’s group stage.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men must be vigilant of their opponent’s fast passing and smooth transition with the ball. Tottenham are the complete opposite to the Italian champions – playing with unpredictability and pressing high up the pitch. With veterans Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli occupying the centre-back positions in the Juve backline, it will be essential that the defending duo use their tall stature and tenacity to deny Tottenham’s aerial threats in set-pieces.

Mauricio Pochettino is known for utilising his traditional 4-2-3-1 formation, allowing the team to be flexible and switch to the basic 4-4-2. The trio of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min providing through balls and crosses to No.10 hitman Harry Kane has often overwhelmed opposition defenders, including Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and Marcelo.

If there is one vital thing the Bianconeri defence can do well in this fixture, it is to keep Kane at bay without giving the Premier League’s leading goal scorer any space around the 18-yard box. Juve’s Alex Sandro must limit any crosses and low passes from the left flank being delivered to the Spurs forward. This is to ensure the Englishman doesn’t get the chance to display his clinical finishing in the air or with his lethal right-footed shot - the last thing La Vecchia Signora want is to concede a fatal away goal that could change the entire complexion leading into the second leg at Wembley.

As the 2017-18 Serie A season has progressed, Juventus have rediscovered their true defending. To be honest, it has only improved under the 4-3-3 formation, demonstrating that the Turin club has moved on from the Leonardo Bonucci era. With Juve only conceding once in 16 consecutive fixtures in all competition, due to a robust defence and Wojciech Szczesny or Gigi Buffon between the posts, this has been a testament to Allegri’s pragmatic approach towards weekly games.

One of the main vulnerabilities that exist within this Tottenham side this season is defending set-pieces. The Bianconeri should get players like Mario Mandzukic – the potential replacement for Paulo Dybala - and Chiellini to expose Spurs’ flaws in corners and free-kicks.

Given Juve’s current form, they should feel full of confidence ahead of this Tottenham clash. While Blaise Matuidi is ruled out due to a thigh muscle injury, Claudio Marchisio will most likely be performing alongside Sami Khedira and Miralem Pjanic, continuing to provide crucial tackles and passes.

Allegri might also give Federico Bernardeschi – the hero from the Fiorentina match - the chance to start ahead of Douglas Costa, as the Italian youngster is finding tremendous form. With the Scudetto holders boasting a deep squad with Champions League knockout experience, they should be the slight favourites to beat Tottenham by playing their traditional style of calcio – absorbing the pressure and capitalising on their chances in attack.

A win without conceding an away goal will put Juve in a commanding position for the second leg in London next month.
