Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain was taken off just 15 minutes into the derby clash with Torino after picking up an injury.

The Argentina international landed heavily five minutes into Sunday's match after hurdling goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu when trying to reach Miralem Pjanic's throughball.

The 30-year-old tried to continue after receiving treatment but eventually had to be replaced by Federico Bernardeschi, with it appearing that Higuain had hurt his ankle.

It will come as a concern for Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri ahead of a crucial run of fixtures in his side's season.

Juve take on Atalanta in Serie A next Sunday before the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final against the same opponents three days later.

They then begin March with a trip to Lazio, four days before they take on Tottenham in the Champions League last 16, who hold the edge in the tie on away goals after a 2-2 draw in Turin.

The loss of the Argentine, who scored both of his side's goals against Spurs on Tuesday, was a big blow for the Serie A champions as they look to overtake Napoli at the top of the table.

However, Bernardeschi proved to be a sound replacement for the former Real Madrid and Napoli star as he took on a pass from Alex Sandro and drove into the box to set the Brazilian up with the return pass and give his side the lead after 33 minutes.

Allegri: 'No Juve failure'

Max Allegri was pleased with the way Juventus reacted against Torino and insists the 2-2 draw with Tottenham “is not a failure.”

The Bianconeri were decimated by injuries, but beat Toro 1-0 thanks to an Alex Sandro tap-in.

“Juventus made too many technical errors after going 2-0 up against Tottenham and they had more chances than we did, but we go to London convinced we can do it,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“Juve are a strong side with extraordinary players, so I am happy to train them. We’re challenging on all three fronts, only got it wrong on four games and I don’t consider the 2-2 with Tottenham to be a failure, nor a tragedy.

“I am proud of the lads and today we saw a good reaction, as we enjoyed ourselves even during difficult moments.”

Paulo Dybala made his comeback in the Derby della Mole.

“Dybala did well for 30 minutes, obviously he’s lacking match fitness, but that will come.”

Higuain and Bernardeschi CL doubts

Gonzalo Higuain and Federico Bernardeschi will undergo testing to determine the extent of injuries sustained in today’s Derby della Mole.

“During today's derby against Torino, Gonzalo Higuain suffered a contusion and trauma to his left ankle, while Federico Bernardeschi suffered some pain involving his left knee ligaments. For both, further tests are planned in the coming days," read a statement.

The Argentine forward lasted only 15 minutes of the 1-0 win over Torino at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino before being substituted after falling awkwardly on his left ankle.

Higuain had sustained the knock after only three minutes following a challenge with Torino keeper Salvatore Sirigu, but despite limping on he was forced to concede defeat not long afterwards.

His replacement, Bernardeschi, was not included in Max Allegri’s starting 11 due to not being fully fit - however, he was required to play 75 minutes before going off himself deep into injury time.

And following the final whistle, it emerged that the former Fiorentina man had sustained a sprain to the ligament of his left knee.

The duo will now undergo testing over the next few days, amid fears they could miss Juve’s crucial Champions League last 16 second leg with Tottenham Hotspur in just over a fortnight’s time.

No video evidence on Chiellini

Serie A, Giudice Sportivo: niente prova tv per Chiellini

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini faces no video evidence punishment for striking Torino star Andrea Belotti during the derby.

The incident occurred during Sunday’s Derby della Mole, which ended 1-0 for the Bianconeri.

Chiellini caught Belotti in the face with a fist, but it was not considered an intentional act.

VAR was not used in this case, as it seems the connection was caught on a Sky Sport Italia exclusive pitch-side camera and not one used by the officials in the booth.

Higuain ready for Coppa

https://www.football-italia.net/117619/higuain-ready-coppa

Feb 23, 2018

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain is expected to be fit for the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg with Atalanta.

The Argentinian international went off injured in the Derby della Mole last Sunday, and it was later confirmed he had suffered an ankle injury.

It was feared that would keep him out of the Champions League second leg with Tottenham Hotspur, but Tuttosport believes he is nearing a return.

The newspaper states that if that match were to be played on Sunday, Higuain would probably be able to play, but he won’t be risked against Atalanta this weekend with Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala both fit.

It’s likely Pipita will be on the bench, but only to be used in case of emergency.

His return is therefore expected to be on Wednesday, when Juve face Atalanta in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final.

In either case, Higuain is expected to be available to face Spurs.

Luca Toni: Napoli lack ‘winning mentality’

https://www.football-italia.net/117638/toni-napoli-lack-winning-mentality

Feb 23, 2018

Luca Toni claims Napoli lack a “winning mentality” as the former Italy striker “didn’t like the way they decided to abandon cups for the League.”

Napoli lead Serie A by a point but at the expense of their participation in the Coppa Italia and European competition, prompting Toni to take issue with the way the Partenopei were going about their business.

“The beautiful thing is that Serie A is the only European League still up for grabs,” the ex- Juve, Fiorentina and Bayern Munich hitman told RMC Sport.

“I didn’t like the way Napoli decided to abandon cups for the League. That’s not the right way to acquire a winning mentality, even if they’re still a great team.

“Juventus are actually trying to move forward in every competition because of this ruthlessness in wanting to win everything.

“The title race will be a good fight until the end of the season.”

Allegri gives Juve injury updates

https://www.football-italia.net/117663/allegri-gives-juve-injury-updates

Feb 24, 2018

Juventus Coach Max Allegri confirms Federico Bernardeschi could require surgery, while Gonzalo Higuain is unlikely to face Atalanta.

It kicks off tomorrow at 18.00 CET - 17.00 GMT.

Bernardeschi sprained his knee and ankle during last week’s 1-0 win over Torino and was meant to undergo tests for ligament damage.

However, the leg is still so swollen that the examinations cannot give a definitive answer.

“Bernardeschi will be revaluated in 20 days,” said Allegri in his Press conference.

“If by that time the conservative treatment has not had the desired effect, we’ll see if he needs an operation. Unfortunately, that is the situation with Federico.

“Higuain got this knock to the ankle last week, he hasn’t trained since and only worked separately from the squad, so it’s very unlikely he’ll be able to play tomorrow.

“Blaise Matuidi and Mario Mandzukic are available. Mattia De Sciglio has a problem with his adductor muscle and will be re-evaluated next week. Juan Cuadrado is working, but still a long way off his comeback.”

This leaves Juventus not only short-staffed for the Atalanta game in Serie A, but also nervous ahead of the Champions League trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

Paulo Dybala has made his return to the fold after a thigh strain, but only as a substitute.

“I tried him out as a centre-forward yesterday, but I need to evaluate it, because we’ve got four games coming up: tomorrow, then Wednesday in the Coppa Italia, Saturday Lazio and the following Wednesday Tottenham.

“It’s unthinkable that Dybala could be ready after 40-45 days out to play 90 minutes in all three games. He played around half-a-hour against Torino, so it’s about finding the right fitness levels in a decisive moment of the season.

“Tomorrow we’ll certainly start Matuidi and Miralem Pjanic, then will decide between Stefano Sturaro, Claudio Marchisio or Rodrigo Bentancur.

“Gigi Buffon and Stephan Lichtsteiner start tomorrow, with either Daniele Rugani or Medhi Benatia.”

Juve beat Atalanta 1-0 in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final and Gian Piero Gasperini’s men are fresh from a heart-breaking Europa League exit to Borussia Dortmund.

“I compliment Atalanta on the way they faced that tournament. It’s a pity they went out, as did Napoli, because Italian sides should always try to go forward in Europe.

“They’ll be eager to make up for it straight away and on Wednesday, like us, they’ll be fired up to reach the Coppa Italia Final. Atalanta are a very physical side who play good football and it’s the first game in a very important run of fixtures.”

Gonzalo Higuain, Sami Khedira and Federico Bernardeschi are out of the Juventus squad to face Atalanta, but Blaise Matuidi and Mario Mandzukic return.

It kicks off on Sunday at 18.00 CET - 17.00 GMT.

The Bianconeri are forced to do without Higuain, who sprained his ankle in the 1-0 victory over Torino last week, and Bernardeschi, who hurt his knee in the same match and will be out for at least three weeks.

Coach Max Allegri said today that if conservative treatment hasn’t resolved the issue by then, Bernardeschi could require surgery.

Mandzukic missed the Torino game with flu and returns with Matuidi and Benedikt Howedes.

Khedira is out along with long-term absentee Juan Cuadrado and full-back Mattia De Sciglio, who has a muscular issue.

Juventus squad for Atalanta: Buffon, Pinsoglio, Szczesny; Chiellini, Benatia, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Howedes, Rugani, Lichtsteiner; Pjanic, Marchisio, Matuidi, Asamoah, Sturaro, Bentancur; Dybala, Douglas Costa, Mandzukic

Mandzukic to lead Juve line

Mario Mandzukic is expected to start as Juventus’ centre-forward in their match with Atalanta today.

With Gonzalo Higuain ruled out after picking up an injury early in the win over Torino last weekend, Coach Max Allegri is set to move the Croatian into the middle from his usual position on the left.

Paulo Dybala is likely to start on the bench once more as he continues his return to fitness, so Mandzukic will be flanked by Alex Sandro on the left and Douglas Costa on the right in Juve’s 4-3-3 formation.

Elsewhere, captain and goalkeeper Gigi Buffon will come back into the Old Lady’s starting eleven after being among the substitutes for the Derby della Mole victory.

Midfielder Blaise Matuidi is back sooner than initially expected following a thigh injury and is tipped for a return to the line up, replacing Stefano Sturaro who drops to the bench.

Full-back Mattia De Sciglio joins Juve’s already lengthy injury list and will be replaced by Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Juan Cuadrado is still absent as he continues to recover from a groin injury, while Federico Bernardeschi could face surgery on his left knee after going off late last week at the Stadio Olimpico.

Atalanta meanwhile are likely to make changes, given that they were in Europa League action on Thursday and have a Coppa Italia semi-final to plan for against Juve in midweek.

“This time we will mix it up, on Wednesday we will honour the cup,” Coach Gian Piero Gasperini remarked as he gave an indication as to what his immediate priorities are.

Andrea Petagna is missing through injury for La Dea, who are looking to repeat last season's achievement of Europa League qualification.

Probable Line-ups

Juventus: Buffon, Lichtsteiner, Rugani, Chiellini, Asamoah, Marchisio, Pjanic, Matuidi, Douglas Costa, Mandzukic, Alex Sandro

Atalanta: Berisha, Toloi, Palomino, Masiello, Castagne, De Roon, Freuler, Spinazzola, Cristante, Ilicic, Cornelius

Official: Juve-Atalanta snowed off

Feb 25, 2018

Juventus-Atalanta has officially been called off due to heavy snowfall in Turin after a pitch inspection.

The snow had been in the city for several hours, but intensified considerably just before the warm-up.

Following a pitch inspection, there was the theory they could simply delay kick-off until another later inspection, but it has now been called off.

“The conditions are clear to all. It would certainly change the spectacle on show, not to mention potential danger for the players,” Juventus director Beppe Marotta told Mediaset Premium before the decision was made.

“We are prepared for any eventuality. Now we’ll await the referee’s pitch inspection and see if there’s a delay or a postponement.

“It’s possible to play in these conditions, but would not be a spectacle worthy of the top flight. There is also the issue we have to take into consideration of potential harm to the players.”
