‘Napoli deserve the compliments’

http://www.football-italia.net/112878/‘napoli-deserve-compliments’

Nov 16, 2017

Giorgio Chiellini concedes Napoli are ahead of Juventus “on merit” and deserve the plaudits they get but “we’ll do everything to beat them”.

The Bianconeri have won the Scudetto for the past six years in a row, but they’re currently a point behind Maurizio Sarri’s side, who have had an unbeaten start to the Serie A season.

In the course of his interview with Corriere della Sera, Chiellini was asked if all the compliments given to the Partenopei gives extra stimulus to beat them.

“It’s been like that for the past two years,” Chiellini shrugged.

“Objectively their game is spectacular at times, with merits and defects like any team. Take the chatter away though and look at the points they’re getting: they’re ahead of us on merit.

“We’ll do everything to beat them though.

“Do we have room for improvement? Yes, and it’s a pleasure that it’s like that. Historically we’re a diesel engine, but you also have to get points when you’re not at your best, using what you have inside.

“I’m intrigued as to who will arrive ahead of everyone in the end. This is an important and difficult month.

“I think the team is growing though and now we have to prove it. We have 22 players and the bench will prove crucial, because those who come on will change games.”

Chiellini and Juve Coach Massimiliano Allegri are both from Livorno, and he was asked if that gives them something in common.

“His most important attribute is the desire to improve every day. You don’t always see that in Coaches, but in the great ones you do.

“From any situation, good or bad, he gets an improvement from the team.”

Mario Mandzukic could be seen by some as a Chiellini of the attack, given their warrior-like styles…

“He could be a central defender too!” Chiellini laughed.

“Last year I was surprised, he showed a footballing intelligence we didn’t see in the first year. He can do everything, because he has everything.

“He’s the balance of our team, to a certain extent.”

Chiellini: ‘I’ve improved over the years’

http://www.football-italia.net/112935/chiellini-‘i’ve-improved-over-years’

Nov 17, 2017

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini puts his success down to hard work - “I knew a lot of talents who didn’t make sacrifices to become the champions they could have been”.

The centre-back has made 96 appearances for Italy, as well as playing over 400 games for the Bianconeri, and he readily admits he’s never been the most naturally gifted player.

“Ten years ago I was faster, more explosive than today,” Chiellini said at a Randstad event at Juventus Stadium.

“I was infinitely weaker though. I played in the regional selects, from the Italy Under-21s to the first team, and I was always considered the ugliest: ungraceful, uncoordinated, raw.

“Then I improved throughout the years, also thanks to the Coaches who believed in me.

“It was difficult when I was 17 and my friends were going out and I just had to think about the ball, but if you do it with passion it’s easier.

“I knew a lot of talents who, at 17 or 18, didn’t make sacrifices and didn’t become the champions they could have been.

“The important thing is always to give your best, at my age I can still improve, these days my brain compensates for what I’ve lost on a physical level.”

Despite his hard man reputation on the pitch, Chiellini is something of a scholar off it and he has a degree in economics from the University of Turin.

“I’d always thought about going to University, and I was prepared to do so. I had scheduled tests, recovery and a lot of will, and the many difficulties didn’t stop me leaving with a 92/100.

“I chose economics at University, but if I hadn’t been a player I might have studied medicine because my dad was an orthopedist. Obviously I always gave priority to football though so I set my studies to one side.

“I was already a professional, between Serie B at Livorno and Fiorentina, I just got an exam so I could skip military service [compulsory military service in Italy was ended in 2005]...

“When I arrived in Turin I realised I had a lot of free time in the afternoon or after training. I preferred studying to playing the Playstation or watching a movie.

“I pursued my three year course in no time, I graduated after a European Championship and a World Cup…

“I always did it for the present, not thinking about when I stop playing. Also, above all, to have a different and better perspective in my sporting career.

“Of course, specialising in business administration could also help me in the future.

“At the same time, I’m 33 now and it’s normal to start thinking about when I’ll hang up my boots, trying to open a new path.

“I don’t know what I’ll do in the future, but I don’t want to spend too much time away from my family. In short, I could stay in football but I don’t want to spend 200 days a year away from home.

“Now I’m focused on this world, it’s not easy to find other areas to work with the same excellence I’ve experienced in sport and with Juventus.”

Chiellini: ‘Scudetto first objective’

http://www.football-italia.net/113118/chiellini-‘scudetto-first-objective’

Nov 21, 2017

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini insists “the Scudetto must be the first goal for us” this season.

The Bianconeri have won Serie A for the past six seasons in a row, but have been beaten twice in the Champions League final.

Gianluigi Buffon, the club captain, has never won the latter competition, and with this being his final year many expect Juve to go all out for the Champions League.

“I think our goal is to be in contention for everything in March,” Chiellini told UEFA’s official website.

“We need to be in the ideal condition and above all be a real team. If we succeed then we’ll be playing for the league, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League.

“The Champions League, of course, is a particular competition and it often comes down to incidents, but you need to get to the decisive stage in the best possible condition.

“Now our goal is to achieve qualification and reach the Last 16, being first or second won’t change much considering the teams in the running.

“Then we have to play for it in March and April, as well as trying to also be in the race to win a seventh Scudetto which has to be the first goal for us.

“Not because the Champions League is less important, but because it’s through the Scudetto and therefore through daily league games that we can get ready.

“If you only think of the Champions League, you risk hurting both sides."

Chiellini was also asked about his relationship with Juve, but revealed he actually grew up supporting Milan.

“My idol as a child was Paolo Maldini. I was a Milan fan and my brother Juve, we were divided like my mum and dad.

“He was a Juventino and she was a Milanista, so there was a bit of a rivalry in the family. But he was definitely my childhood idol.

“Juventus is a family to me now. I’ve been here for 12 years, this is my 13th season and I’ve played over 400 games.

“I recently entered the top 10 in terms of appearances for this club, so it’s part of me and I’m part of it.

“I’m part of the history of this great club and I feel fortunate to have contributed to writing it.

“To stay here for so many years you need important gifts, not just technique but above all on a human level.

“When you visit the museum and see on display the shirts and the tables that talk about so many years and lots of matches, you realise that those who have stayed here for a long time have something different from the others on a human level.

“All those who have been here even a few months realise that there’s something different. We’re here to do our job, and they put us in the best position to do so.

“At Juventus we talk about a culture of work, which is the basis for every success and handed down from generation to generation.

“It’s something that we too will leave to the lads who will continue this great history.

“The fans? I have a good relationship with them because I’ve always given everything for the shirt and they definitely appreciate that.

“Since the new stadium everything has changed on the pitch, especially in the most important games. You feel something special.”

Chiellini: 'Defenders are pessimistic'

http://www.football-italia.net/113136/chiellini-defenders-are-pessimistic

Nov 21, 2017

Giorgio Chiellini explained what it takes to be a great centre-back for Juventus. “A good defender must be pessimistic and think of the worst-case scenario.”

The Italy and Bianconeri star spoke to UEFA.com and you can read the rest of the interview here.

“I had originally wanted to start playing basketball with my friend from school, but as I was only five years old and I have a twin brother who wanted to play football, we went together to the football school and this great love affair with the sport began.

“I played in midfield until the age of 12 or 13, then started going up and down the flank up until 20 and from 20 onwards I started playing as a centre-back.

“To be a good centre-back, you need a lot of focus and concentration, which are two fundamental characteristics. You must feel pleasure in anticipating your opponent, so not just scoring goals or producing, but in a way destroying the approach of the other team and preventing their forward from scoring.

“On top of that, a good defender must be pessimistic, in the sense that he must always think of the worst-case scenario. You or your teammate could lose the ball at any moment and a dangerous situation come about. It’s not easy to keep up that mentality for 90 minutes in every game, because when you are tired or not so sharp, it can be difficult to think quickly, but I feel the mind is more important than any technical or athletic qualities.

“Personally, I try to make the most of my strengths, which are physical contact with the striker. When I’m up against faster forwards, I try to start my run a second earlier and not leave open ground for him to run in to. I feel knowing your opponent’s characteristics is increasingly important in modern football.”

Chiellini to miss Crotone

http://www.football-italia.net/113217/chiellini-miss-crotone

Nov 23, 2017

It’s expected Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini will miss this weekend’s Crotone game, as he’ll be rested ahead of Napoli.

The centre-back missed last night’s draw with Barcelona with a thigh injury, though his teammates kept a clean sheet in his absence in a 0-0 draw.

According to this morning’s Tuttosport, Chiellini will also miss the game with Crotone on Sunday night, even if he’s passed fit to play.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri doesn’t want to risk the veteran, with a clash with Napoli to follow on the Friday.

Chiellini: ‘Winning is an obligation’

http://www.football-italia.net/113528/chiellini-‘winning-obligation’

Nov 29, 2017

Giorgio Chiellini says “at Juventus winning is almost an obligation”, and insists he has “good relationships with opposition strikers”.

The centre-back was interviewed by Simona Sodini of the Juventus Women’s team, and discussed his long career with the Bianconeri.

“At Juve, winning is almost an obligation,” Chiellini said.

“When you win you feel like you’ve done your duty, and more than an exaltation, it’s relaxation after months of sacrifice.

“To stay at Juventus for so many years, you have to be a certain type of person and work with passion every day. The pitch is just a consequence of that.

“You always hope not to lose, but the truth is that defeat gives you the right incentives and focus to win in the end.”

Chiellini is known for his uncompromising style, and he was asked about the art of defending.

“Marking a striker becomes a personal challenge. You need to anticipate an attacker, understand his movements and try not to let him score.

“I have to say that now I had good relationships with opposition strikers, age has improved things in that regard.

“As a young man I was a bit more warlike!

“Being a defender is a way of life on the pitch. You need to take pleasure in not letting the opponent score.

“It’s about winning the duel, ‘destroying’ what the striker wants to do.”

Chiellini: 'Art of defending lost'

http://www.football-italia.net/114551/chiellini-art-defending-lost

Dec 19, 2017

Giorgio Chiellini called winning “a drug” for Juventus and fears “the art of defending” has been lost in Italy, but insists he was “always fair.”

The centre-back spoke to Undici magazine about his past, present and future in Turin.

“This season is no less motivating than any other, because for years Juventus have been racing only against ourselves,” said Chiellini.

“I can’t choose between our victories, as they are all wonderful, and it’s not true that in the end it becomes boring. Winning is like a drug. It’s something you need, because if you feel that emotion once, you do everything to experience it again.”

He is known as a rather rugged defender who relishes breaking up the opposition play.

“You have to disturb the movements of the opposition strikers and prevent them, doing things that make them short-circuit. I have always been like that and I think that’s how you ought to go into these grand duels.

“I’m certainly not a pleasant player to face on the field, but I’m always fair. Nowadays I am less impulsive, as I can reflect on my actions better. When I was 22 years old, every game was a battle, even a war, because at that age I could just let out all my tension and adrenaline.

“Even then, I wasn’t nasty, but I was a pain to play against. Now I’ve become accustomed to it, but back then you don’t know where to direct your energy and tension.”

Chiellini has been critical of Pep Guardiola’s approach to football and explained his theory in greater detail.

“I believe the advent of Guardiola’s style of football has changed the nature of something we in Italy did so well for many years, which is the art of defending.

“There is a remarkable generational gap in defenders and that’s what caused it. Now lads who arrive in Serie A know how to spread the play and pass the ball, they can make a pin-point pass 40 metres away, but they haven’t the slightest idea how to man-mark or take players on on-on-one.”

With this in mind, would Chiellini like to become a Coach and pass on his knowledge to the next generation?

“When I do hang up my boots, I want to remain in football, but with a career more behind a desk than as a Coach.”

CHIELLINI PLANS CONTRACT TALKS WITH JUVENTUS 'FAMILY'

http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/chelsea-face-chiellini-frustration

-as-defender-plans/1kp5opnt24g0518rqhlw33yvl9

Jan 1, 2018

Giorgio Chiellini is ready to snub reports of interest from Chelsea and enter into contract extension talks with Juventus.

The 33-year-old has been linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge for some time, with Antonio Conte eager to work with the experienced centre-half once again.

The Blues boss has previously spent time in charge of Juve and the Italian national side.

Chiellini is yet to bring an end to the rumours as he runs down his current contract towards free agency, but he is open to agreeing fresh terms and expects discussions to begin imminently.

He told Sky Italia when quizzed on his future: “Extend my contract with Juventus? I'll meet the club after the holidays to discuss the contract extension and I think that there won't be any surprise.

“Juventus feels like family to me and I couldn't be better.”

For now, Chiellini’s focus is locked on helping Juve to chase down more major silverware.

During his 12 years with the club, he has already claimed six Serie A titles and three Coppa Italia crowns.

Chiellini intends to get his hands on those trophies again in 2018, while going one better than 12 months ago by completing a treble with Champions League glory.

He added: “We aim to win Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Champions League.

“We have the potential to go all the way in every competition.”

Juve are currently sat second in the Serie A standings, one point behind leaders Napoli.

They have a derby date with Torino to come on Wednesday in the Coppa Italia, and a last-16 encounter with Tottenham to prepare for in the Champions League.

Conte: ‘Chiellini will stay at Juventus’

http://www.football-italia.net/114998/conte-‘chiellini-will-stay-juventus’

Jan 2, 2018

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte dismisses talk of a move for Giorgio Chiellini - “he wants to stay at Juventus”.

The centre-back is out of contract at the end of the season, and so far he hasn’t signed a new deal with the Bianconeri.

That has led to talk he could reunited with Conte at Stamford Bridge, but the Blues boss thinks that’s unlikely.

“There’s a lot of speculation,” Conte said in his Press conference ahead of the Arsenal game.

“But it’s normal when the transfer window starts. It’s a difficult moment for any Coach and any club because you have to face a lot of speculation, and for sure some speculation, yeah it could be true.

“For others it’s only speculation. For us I think that in this period we must be very, very focused on our target and tomorrow we have a game against Arsenal, and we need to find the right concentration [for that].

“For the transfer market there is the club to try to do the best for the team.

“Will we get Chiellini? No, no I must be honest. Giorgio is a fantastic player but I think he wants to finish his career at Juventus and I think it’s right to finish his career in this way.”

Chiellini: ‘Conte kills you!’

https://www.football-italia.net/116871/chiellini-‘conte-kills-you’

Feb 7, 2018

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini calls Antonio Conte “a police sergeant”, declaring “when you finish training, you are dead”.

The centre-back worked with the Chelsea manager at both Juve and Italy, winning three Scudetti in a row and reaching the Euro 2016 semi-final.

“It is not only in the match with Conte,” Chiellini told the Daily Mail.

“It is all day, every training session. He is like a police sergeant.

“We felt something very special in his atmosphere, for three years with him at Juventus and two years in the national team.

“When you finish training, you are dead. Not tired — dead. You can do it only because you believe in what he does. We had 40 days in France and it was like entering another world.

“You are 100 per cent with him. He creates an atmosphere, everyone gives energy to each other. For sure he is one of the very best.”

Chiellini also discussed the upcoming tie with Tottenham Hotspur.

“Strong team. I like the Belgian couple at the back, [Jan] Vertonghen and [Toby] Alderweireld.

“Harry Kane is a fantastic player. He played against us three years ago and he has really improved. Now he scores more than Messi in a calendar year...and that's very different to scoring more than Chiellini!'

“A move to the Premier League? For an Italian, you only leave Juventus if Juventus want to sell you. It is simple.”

Chiellini to beat Boniperti record

https://www.football-italia.net/117135/chiellini-beat-boniperti-record

Feb 13, 2018

Giorgio Chiellini will move above Giampiero Boniperti in the all-time Juventus appearance list if he plays against Tottenham Hotspur tonight.

The centre-back has played 459 competitive matches for the Bianconeri, exactly the same number as the former striker.

Assuming that Chiellini starts, as is expected, he will be along in seventh position on the all-time appearance list.

Alessandro Del Piero leads the way on 705, with Gianluigi Buffon behind him on 641.

From there it’s a big gap back to Gaetano Scirea on 552 and Beppe Furino on 528.

The next target in Chiellini’s sights is Dino Zoff, the legendary goalkeeper who made 476 appearances for the Old Lady.

Chiello’s contract is up at the end of the season, but it’s not expected there will be any problem for a renewal and at the age of 33 he should be able to catch Zoff, if not Del Piero and Buffon.

Carragher: 'Nobody like Chiellini'

https://www.football-italia.net/118305/carragher-nobody-chiellini

Mar 10, 2018

Jamie Carragher penned an impassioned tribute to Giorgio Chiellini after Juventus beat Tottenham Hotspur. “England have nobody like him.”

The Bianconeri fought back from a 2-2 first leg result and Hon Seung-Min goal at Wembley to win 2-1 in the Champions League.

Although Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala got the goals, former England and Liverpool midfielder Carragher hailed another hero.

“Where is England’s Chiellini?” wrote the pundit in The Telegraph newspaper.

“Who among the centre-backs in Southgate’s squad could produce a performance of Chiellini’s calibre in that last 20 minutes against Spurs at Wembley on Wednesday night? There is nobody close.

“That is a worry going into the World Cup. When England find themselves under pressure, holding on to a lead in a tight game, who will step up like the Juventus centre-half?

“Whatever happens in the CL this season, Chiellini’s reaction when intercepting the cross from Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min will be one of the competition’s enduring images. It made me jump out my seat and applaud the TV. Then the celebration between Chiellini and (Gigi) Buffon. I loved it.

“Dybala may have scored the winning goal, but I am sure everyone in that dressing room was thanking Chiellini.”

The 33-year-old has been with the Bianconeri since 2005, but sadly won’t get a chance to shine at the 2018 World Cup because Italy failed to qualify.

“Chiellini’s performance made me realise what I miss most about playing. He would have slept soundly on Wednesday night after his masterclass in organisation and resilience during those last 20 minutes.

“As the game entered the closing stages, I said to my son: ‘Just watch Chiellini. Watch everything he does.’”

Juventus veterans to renew

https://www.football-italia.net/118448/juventus-veterans-renew

March 13, 2018

Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini are both close to signing new contracts with Juventus, according to reports.

Both players are out of contract on June 30, but neither appears to have any desire to leave the Old Lady this summer.

Now Tuttosport is reporting that Chiellini has agreed on a new multi-year contract, which will be officially announced in the coming days.

The 33-year-old wants to end his career in Turin, and the Bianconeri are ready to satisfy that desire.

Meanwhile, for 36-year-old Andrea Barzagli there will be a one-year extension, keeping him at Juve beyond his 38th birthday on May 8 2019.

Chiellini a Real risk?

https://www.football-italia.net/118731/chiellini-real-risk

Mar 19, 2018

Giorgio Chiellini is reportedly a doubt for the first leg of Juventus’ Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.

According to Tuttosport, the suspected muscle strain Chiellini suffered against SPAL on Saturday is worse than first feared.

The defender was initially considered doubtful for Italy’s upcoming friendlies against Argentina and England.

However, the Turin-based publication believes the 33-year-old is certain to miss those games.

One stopper certain to miss the visit of Madrid on April 3 is Medhi Benatia due to a yellow-card ban.

No serious injury for Chiellini

https://www.football-italia.net/118781/no-serious-injury-chiellini

Mar 20, 2018

Juventus have announced that Giorgio Chiellini’s injury is “nothing serious”, so he should be back for Milan and Real Madrid.

The centre-back went off injured against Spal on Saturday, and was forced to pull out of the Italy squad with a thigh injury.

It was initially feared that he would miss the first leg of the Champions League Quarter-Final, but the Bianconeri have offered reassurances today.

“Giorgio Chiellini has undergone tests on the muscular injury to his right thigh flexors, sustained in the match against Spal and because of which he yesterday left the training camp of the national team,” a statement on Juve’s official website begins.

“What has emerged is a situation which is nothing serious but which, however, requires daily monitoring.

“The player has already started physiotherapy and will be re-evaluated next week.”

Confirmed: Chiellini hamstring tear

https://www.football-italia.net/120356/confirmed-chiellini-hamstring-tear

Apr 23, 2018

Juventus could lose Giorgio Chiellini the rest of the season after it was confirmed the defender suffered a hamstring tear against Napoli.

Chiellini pulled up just 10 minutes into Juve’s 1-0 defeat to Napoli, and a statement on the Bianconeri’s official website explains tests on Monday showed ‘a tear to the biceps femoris muscle in his left knee’.

Given the defender tore the muscle, as opposed to straining it, he will miss the Old Lady’s trip to Inter on Saturday and is not certain to be back in time for the Coppa Italia Final against Milan on May 9.

Chiellini 'cheering on Liverpool'

https://www.football-italia.net/121940/chiellini-cheering-liverpool

May 26, 2018

Giorgio Chiellini and his father will be “cheering on Liverpool” against Real Madrid in the Champions League Final.

It kicks off this evening in Kiev at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Real Madrid knocked Juve out in a dramatic quarter-final with a last-gasp penalty at the Bernabeu.

“With the match practically over, a dubious penalty does leave you upset, as you saw from Giorgio’s reaction,” Fabio Chiellini told Mediaset Premium.

“I’ll look at the result, but it won’t take my attention.”

When asked if he and the other Juventini would be supporting Real Madrid, if nothing else to show they were beaten by the eventual trophy winners, the answer was emphatic.

“No, no. We’re cheering on Liverpool, both Giorgio and me. In a way, I guess Real are unlikeable a bit like us at Juventus, because we win all the time. It’s only normal.”

Chiellini: ‘No CL priority’

https://www.football-italia.net/122744/chiellini-‘no-cl-priority’

Jun 10, 2018

New Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini says his side will not prioritise winning the Champions League over retaining the Scudetto.

The Old Lady have won Serie A in each of the last seven seasons. However, despite their domestic dominance they have failed to add to European Cups won in 1985 and 1996.

But Chiellini, who replaces Gigi Buffon as captain of the Turin club, insists the Bianconeri’s focus will be on winning everything once the new campaign begins in August.

“No, we will aim to win everything as always,” the veteran defender responded when asked whether European glory is the priority.

“Now, we have the chance to relax with peace and calmness. Then it will be a great year just like the last ones, I am sure about that.”

The 33-year-old admits he will miss predecessors Buffon and Alessandro Del Piero but wants to leave a legacy of his own as Juve captain.

“I am even older, it’s true. I will miss them and it’s normal that it’s like that.

“We hope to leave behind good things for our teammates, who can then continue when we are not there anymore.”

OFFICIAL: Juve renew Chiellini & Barzagli

https://www.football-italia.net/123746/official-juve-renew-chiellini-barzagli

Jun 29, 2018

Juventus have announced that defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli have extended their contracts until 2020 and 2019 respectively.

Chiellini and Barzagli have made 743 combined appearances for Juve, as well as forming part of their ‘BBBC’ backline, which has yielded seven straight Scudetti, four Coppa Italia and two Champions League Finals.

A statement on the Bianconeri’s official website reads: “Two of Juve’s ‘Magnificent Five’ members to have won all seven Scudetto titles en route to becoming #MY7H, Chiellini and Barzagli have forged an extraordinary partnership across the Bianconeri backline over the years, making it one of the most formidable defences in European football.

“With both Chiello and Barza together on the pitch, Juventus have conceded just 0.7 goals and gained an impressive 2.3 points per game.

“On both counts, the Bianconeri have performed better compared to when at least one of them has been absent (0.8 goals conceded and 2.2 points per game).

“Juventus could not be happier to maintain the services of two men, who for so long have embodied the club’s #FinoAllaFine mindset. Here is hoping for further success for both players and the club starting next season.”

Chiellini has also been confirmed as the Old Lady’s captain next season following the departure of fellow veteran Gianluigi Buffon.

Chiellini: ‘Bonucci? We’ll see…’

https://www.football-italia.net/125572/chiellini-‘bonucci-we’ll-see…’

Jul 31, 2018

Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini calls Leonardo Bonucci “a friend” but doesn’t know if he’ll return from Milan.

The Bianconeri appear to be on the verge of a swap deal which will see the centre-back return to Turin after just one season, with Mattia Caldara to move the other way.

“Leonardo, for me, is a friend,” Chiellini told ESPN.

“I pass my holiday with him and my family. I know about his quality, but I don't know. It's not easy, and I want to have respect to my teammates

“I'm not a Oresident or director, so we will see what happens at the end of the Serie A transfer window. We will see if Leonardo is here.”

Chiellini also discussed the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I said to my friends: ‘Nah, it’s impossible’.

“After one day, [I thought] maybe it is possible.

"With our, with our directors... it's a reality. Juventus is growing year after year, and we need a champion like Cristiano.

"We are excited, we are ready to work with him; all the parts of the club, the players, the marketing manager, the director, are ready to improve with Cristiano and we hope he can help us to achieve our target."

Chiellini ‘torn’ over Azzurri future

https://www.football-italia.net/125785/chiellini-‘torn’-over-azzurri-future

Aug 6, 2018

Giorgio Chiellini says he is ‘torn’ over whether to continue playing for Italy and will talk to Coach Roberto Mancini.

The Juventus defender has won 96 caps for the Azzurri since making his full international debut in 2004.

But during an interview with Corriere dello Sport, the 33-year-old revealed he is unsure as to whether he should continue playing for his country or make way for younger talent to emerge.

“I am torn. I am not a youngster anymore,” Chiellini admitted.

“I know that every decision I make will have pros and cons.

“The boss will probably want to try out the many good younger players there are in my position.

“I will talk about it with him. I’ll do it with great calmness and in a level-headed way.”

Chiellini: 'Poland-Italy not a play-off'

https://www.football-italia.net/129284/chiellini-poland-italy-not-play

Oct 13, 2018

Giorgio Chiellini maintains tomorrow’s Nations League trip to Poland “is not a final, not a play-off, there’s a long way to go yet for Euro 2020.”

The Nations League clash kicks off on Sunday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

As both sides lost to Portugal and drew 1-1 in Bologna, this is a head-to-head in order to avoid third place and relegation into League B.

“It’s not a final, it’s not a play-off, it’s just an important push towards Euro 2020. There is a long way to go yet,” assured the Juventus defender in his Press conference.

“I take it day by day and work with great enthusiasm. There are many talented young lads, we are getting to know each other more and more.

“It’ll never be a problem if I step aside and I’ll never see myself as indispensable. I am just as important as the other 26-27 players.

“Whatever will be, will be, we’ll see what happens over the next month, six months or two years.”

The Nazionale were held to a 1-1 draw by Ukraine on Wednesday, despite dominating the first hour of their friendly.

“It was certainly pleasing that we played good football, although there are regrets we only scored one goal, which was the bare minimum considering our efforts.”

Chiellini: Players need more education

https://www.football-italia.net/129428/chiellini-players-need-more-education

Oct 17, 2018

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini claims ‘we have to encourage more football players to study and increase the number with university degrees.’

Chiellini is one of the most decorated Italian players in history with seven Scudetti to his name, but the 34-year-old also recently graduated from the University of Turin with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.

“We have to encourage more football players to study and increase the number with university degrees. Because life is long,” he told FIFPro to help promote its ‘Mind the Gap’ campaign.

“Life will be beautiful after the end of a player’s career. But you have to prepare first or there is a risk you will get to 35-years-old and not know what to do with your life. Only a few players manage to find a job in football.”

Chiellini joins the 100 Club

https://www.football-italia.net/130805/chiellini-joins-100-club

Nov 17, 2018

Giorgio Chiellini has become only the seventh player to reach 100 Italy caps, after he captains the Azzurri against Portugal - 14 years to the day since his debut.

The Juventus defender made his debut on November 17 2004 at the age of just 20, replacing Alessandro Parisi at half-time in a friendly against Finland.

Fabrizio Miccoli scored the winner after 33 minutes, with Chiello playing left-back in a team which also included future teammate Andrea Barzagli.

Here are the six other men who have reached their Azzurri century.

Dino Zoff (1968-1983) - 112 caps

Zoff-Bearzot-epa.jpg

Zoff was the first man ever to reach the milestone, making his debut against Bulgaria in the quarter-finals of the 1968 European Championships.

He retained his place in the side on home soil, and Italy went on to win the tournament, with Zoff playing in the final and the replay, after the first match had ended 1-1.

The legendary goalkeeper was still between the posts 14 years later, when at the age of 40 he captained the Azzurri to the World Cup.

Andrea Pirlo (2002-2015) - 116 caps

Pirlo-Barthez-epa.jpg

Having been talismanic for the Under-21 side, Pirlo made his senior debut in a 2–0 away win over Azerbaijan in a Euro 2004 qualifying match.

He wouldn’t become a fixture in the side until the following qualifying campaign though, announcing himself on the international stage with two free-kick goals against Scotland.

Pirlo was ever-present as Marcello Lippi’s side won the trophy, and he was awarded man-of-the-match in the final.

He inspired the Azzurri to the Euro 2012 final, and scored on his 100th cap against Mexico at the Maracana in the 2014 Confederations Cup.

Daniele De Rossi (2004-2017) - 117 caps

Another 2006 World Cup winner, De Rossi’s first cap for his country came against Norway in a qualifying match for that tournament.

The Roma man scored in that game, but his World Cup got off to a poor start when he was banned for elbowing Brian McBride in the group stage against the U.S.A.

De Rossi surpassed Pirlo in a defeat away to Sweden last year, which proved to be his final cap.

The veteran remained on the bench as the Azzurri drew the return leg, and he retired from international football following the resultant failure to make the World Cup.

Paolo Maldini (1988-2002) - 126 caps

Considered by many to be the best defender of all time, Maldini’s first match came in a 1-1 draw with Yugoslavia.

He played all seven matches at Italia 90 two years later, doing the same as the Azzurri reached the World Cup final four years later in the U.S.A.

Maldini became Italy’s most-capped player in a 3–0 win over Romania in Milan in a 2002 World Cup qualifier, but he never won a trophy at international level.

The defender retired from the Azzurri after the 2002 World Cup, but he played another seven seasons for Milan before hanging up his boots.

Fabio Cannavaro (1997-2010) - 136 caps

Cannavaro’s Italy debut came in a friendly against Northern Ireland, and alongside Alessandro Nesta he became a mainstay of the defence for the next decade.

Undoubtedly his finest moment came as he captained the Azzurri to World Cup glory in Germany in 2006, with his inspirational displays earning him the nickname ‘The Berlin Wall’.

His performances earned him the Ballon d’Or, only the third defender to be awarded the prize and the most recent to be given the award.

Cannavaro returned for the 2010 World Cup, but by then his powers were waning and he retired after a humiliating group stage exit.

Gianluigi Buffon (1997-2018) - 176 caps

Buffon-Ita-Wargh490epa.jpg

The record set by Buffon may well never be broken.

As well as being Italy’s most-capped player, Gigi is also the European player with the most international caps of all time.

His debut came at the age of just 19 in a crucial World Cup play-off against Russia, with the Parma goalkeeper putting in a heroic display in snowy conditions to earn a 1-1 draw.

Buffon was included in five World Cup squads - though he didn’t play in 1998 - and played every match in 2006.

He also played at five European Championships, with his 17 appearances a record for a goalkeeper.

For Italy Buffon holds the record for most minutes, most games as captain, most European Championship appearances, most World Cup qualifying matches, most clean sheets and most penalties saved.

He asked not to be called-up after the June friendlies, but given he is still playing at Paris Saint-Germain, the 40-year-old may yet add to his caps.

Chiellini: Ronaldo until 40, Cancelo...

https://www.football-italia.net/130900/chiellini-ronaldo-until-40-cancelo

Nov 19, 2018

Giorgio Chiellini says Cristiano Ronaldo can play until he is 40 and that Juventus ‘forgive’ Joao Cancelo’s lapses because ‘he gives us so much going forward’.

Ronaldo and Cancelo both joined Juve over the summer, and Chiellini praised the impact made by the Portuguese pair on the Old Lady.

“Can we play until 40? Yes, although I don’t think I will,” the defender told Tuttosport.

“It’s not so much that he comes first to training to make a difference, but rather it’s the way he works: he pushes you to improve yourself.

“On top of that, he’s smart: he arrived in a different League and country but immediately tried to understand the dynamics of the city and integrate.

“He’ll be back for his national team and he’ll be able to play even more than me: I have to manage myself.

“Cancelo? I saw that the Coach called him back for a couple of defensive movements he made, but he’s working a lot on this and he’ll learn quickly.

“We know he gives us so much going forward that we forgive him for a bit of amnesia…”
