Happy 80th Birthday, Trap!

Giovanni Trapattoni celebrates his 80th birthday today and all lovers of Calcio should salute a true Italian football icon.

Il Trap spent practically his entire playing career at Milan, making 274 appearances for the Rossoneri from 1957 to 1971, before seeing out his time at Varese for one more season.

He also started management at Milan in caretaker roles, but only really began to flourish once he moved on to Juventus in 1976.

Over a decade in Turin, Trapattoni won six Serie A titles, the European Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Cup, European Supercup, Intercontinental Cup and two editions of the Coppa Italia.

There was another period of success back at San Siro with Inter from 1986 to 1994, dominating the 1988-99 Serie A season with 58 points from a possible 68.

He brought the Nerazzurri the UEFA Cup and Italian Supercup, before returning to Juventus for another UEFA Cup in 1993.

Trap became a hero for Bayern Munich fans during his time there from 1994-98, mainly for his rather unique grasp of the German language, culminating in an iconic speech shouting about the poor work ethic of Basler, Scholl and Strunz.

There were spells with Fiorentina, where he was challenging for the Scudetto until Gabriel Batistuta’s injury and achieved some memorable Champions League results against Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Inevitably, Trapattoni took the Italy job in the summer of 2000, but it was ill-fated, crashing out early in the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004.

It was then that he started globetrotting in search of new experiences at Benfica, Stuttgart, RB Salzburg and most recently the Republic of Ireland team.

He even tried to translate his legendary catchphrase: ‘Non dire gatto se non ce l’hai nel sacco’.

It literally means “don’t say cat unless you have it in your sack,” but in reality is a more bizarre version of “don’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched.”

Juventus are without Cristiano Ronaldo for their early trip to Genoa, but move to 3-5-2 with Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Alex Sandro.

It kicks off at Marassi at 11.30 GMT - 12.30 CET.

The Bianconeri are still buzzing after their Champions League comeback to beat Atletico Madrid 3-0 on the night, 3-2 on aggregate, setting up a quarter-final clash with Ajax.

Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a hat-trick midweek and Max Allegri has decided to rest the superstar, even if it means falling further behind Sampdoria’s Fabio Quagliarella in the Capocannoniere race.

Also left behind in Turin due to injury are Sami Khedira, Douglas Costa, Andrea Barzagli, Juan Cuadrado and Mattia De Sciglio.

Giorgio Chiellini and Blaise Matuidi are allowed a spot on the bench today, giving the likes of Daniele Rugani and Martin Caceres the chance to shine.

There’s a move to the 3-5-2 formation, with Mandzukic and Dybala upfront.

It’s a very special day for Mattia Perin, who returns to face his former club for the first time since the summer transfer to Turin.

Genoa have their goalkeeper Ionut Radu back in the side, after he missed last week’s defeat to Parma due to injury.

Andrea Favilli and Oscar Hiljemark are the only remaining absentees, as Coach Cesare Prandelli relies on strikers Antonio Sanabria and Christian Kouame.

Grifone centre-back Cristian Romero has practically agreed a move to Juventus, although it probably won’t be until June 2020.

Genoa have failed to keep a clean sheet against Juventus in their last nine competitive meetings, dating back to October 2014, conceding 19 goals.

If they pick up a result here, it’ll be the first time Genoa have managed to avoid defeat against Juventus over a Serie A season since 2011-12.

Genoa: Radu; Pereira, Romero, Zukanovic, Criscito; Lazovic, Radovanovic, Rolon, Lerager; Sanabria, Kouame

Juventus: Perin; Caceres, Bonucci, Rugani; Cancelo, Emre Can, Pjanic, Bentancur, Alex Sandro; Mandzukic, Dybala

Genoa have had the better of the first half, including a penalty awarded and then revoked via VAR review, but Juventus hang on.

The Bianconeri were fresh from an epic Champions League comeback to eliminate Atletico Madrid, but hat-trick hero Cristiano Ronaldo was rested with Giorgio Chiellini and Blaise Matuidi, while Sami Khedira, Douglas Costa, Andrea Barzagli, Juan Cuadrado and Mattia De Sciglio were injured. The Grifone were one of only three Serie A teams to have taken points off Juve this season, with a 1-1 Turin draw in October.

This was the first return to Marassi for ex-Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin and he was immediately called into action with an excellent save to deny Tonny Sanabria one-on-one after Daniele Rugani had done enough to stall Christian Kouame.

Perin had to parry again from Kouame on a corner, but the move continued and the referee awarded a penalty for Joao Cancelo’s handball. However, after viewing it again on VAR, he revoked the decision because Kouame had handled it first, knocking the ball on to the Juve player’s hand.

Genoa continued to threaten and Esteban Rolon scuffed his finish over from just inside the penalty area when undisturbed.

Juventus record ended by Genoa!

Juventus have lost their Serie A unbeaten record with a shock 2-0 defeat to Genoa, with late goals from Goran Pandev and their former player Stefano Sturaro.

They hadn't lost in the top flight since the home defeat to Napoli on April 22.

Juve thought they had taken the lead when Cancelo pulled back from the by-line for unmarked Dybala, whose side-foot finish from just inside the area took a deflection off Domenico Criscito to wrong-foot Ionut Radu. However, VAR intervened again, this time because there was a very tight offside call in the build-up.

Goran Pandev came off the bench and aimed straight at Perin from a promising position, but the breakthrough came from the man absolutely nobody expected.

Stefano Sturaro, who was sold to Genoa in January after practically a year out injured and who was criticised by many as overpaid and a financial loophole for Juventus, came off the bench for his Grifone debut and scored two minutes later. It was a well-taken right-foot curler from the edge of the box, but bounced right in front of Perin and into the far bottom corner.

Juve were rocked and Kouame wasted a great opportunity by firing over, but created the goal moments later when he cut inside and sent Pandev clear with a smart reverse pass, allowing the Macedonian to drill into the far bottom corner with his trusty left boot. The celebrations at Marassi were so wild that they cracked the glass dividing the crowd from the pitch.

Genoa: Radu; Pereira, Romero, Zukanovic, Criscito; Lazovic (Sturaro 70), Radovanovic (Veloso 75), Rolon, Lerager; Sanabria (Pandev 59), Kouame

Juventus: Perin; Caceres, Bonucci, Rugani; Cancelo (Bernardeschi 59), Emre Can, Pjanic, Bentancur (Spinazzola 77), Alex Sandro; Mandzukic (Kean 73), Dybala

Allegri: 'Wakes Juventus up'

Max Allegri hopes the first Serie A defeat of the season can “wake Juventus up, but there’s no need to make a drama” of the loss to Genoa.

Just days after the Champions League 3-0 triumph over Atletico Madrid, the Bianconeri seemed drained at Marassi and fell 2-0.

“I expected a different Juventus. We did not put in a good performance, we made some mistakes and then this goal came out of nowhere,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia and DAZN.

“Much like the Coppa Italia defeat to Atalanta, we picked the right game to lose, because it’s just before the break for international duty, so we have time to unplug and rest.

“Inevitably, the effort we put in against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday weighed on us. We ran some risks in the first half, but did better after the break. Once we seemed to be in control, that’s when we conceded and the game changed.

“You can’t play every game to the best of your abilities. I think, if anything, this defeat can do us good and wake us up. We thought that we’d already won the Scudetto, but that is not the case. We need another five wins and must now hope Napoli drop some points.

“It’s impossible to win every game, I’ve said that since the start, so no need to make a drama out of it. We’ve played 28 games, won 24 and drawn three, so it’s not that bad.”

The opener was scored by Stefano Sturaro, who only left Juventus on loan with obligation to buy in January and was 90 seconds into his Grifone debut.

“I am actually happy for Stefano, because if anyone had to score against us, I’m glad it was Sturaro. He’s a lovely guy and suffered so much, out of action for practically a year with that tendon injury, so he deserves it.”

Sturaro: 'Didn't realise what happened'

Stefano Sturaro admits he “only realised after a few minutes what had happened” after scoring for Genoa’s victory over parent club Juventus.

The midfielder has been out for practically a year due to a tendon injury, joined Genoa in January on loan with obligation to buy and scored within two minutes of stepping off the bench for his debut.

“It’s a fantastic sensation, I only realised after a few minutes what had happened,” Sturaro told DAZN after a shock 2-0 victory.

“It has been a difficult year for me. I am still a long way off match fitness and this really couldn’t have been a better gift. This has to be the boost we need, because Genoa are largely a young squad, but with solid foundations.”

Sturaro still has fond memories of Juventus and wished them the best in Europe.

I hope my former teammates win the Champions League. They did something really special in beating Atletico Madrid and can achieve great things for Italian football.”

Very bad game for Ajax at AZ

Ajax is heading into the interland period on a sour note.  In Alkmaar, the Amsterdam team was defeated by AZ, 1-0.  Due to this loss, the Ajacieds have lost control in the race for the title.

Ajax sconfitto dopo sei vittorie consecutive: Ziyech ko dopo 23'

https://english.ajax.nl/streams/ajax-now/very-bad-game-for-ajax-at-az-.htm

Mar 17, 2019

PSV, who will visit the Johan Cruijff ArenA in 2 weeks, had posted a narrow 0-1 win at VVV earlier in the afternoon.  Just before kick-off, the gap between the leader and Ajax had increased to 5 points.  In order to keep their chances at winning the championship in their own hands, the Ajacieds needed to win at AZ.  They failed to do this.

Erik ten Hag went with his Champions League line-up with Dusan Tadic as centre forward and David Neres on the flank.  Compared to Wednesday’s narrow win against PEC Zwolle, the coach was now able to use Frenkie de Jong and Hakim Ziyech.  Ajax was in fighting form.

Ziyech injured
But after 20 minutes of play, with AZ’s Seuntjes getting the best scoring opportunity, that dream was dashed.  Ziyech was forced to leave the field and was replaced by Kasper Dolberg.

Ajax was playing a sloppy game, and they watched AZ get stronger and stronger in the first half.  In the 28th minute, the Amsterdam team escaped narrowly when Oussama Idrissi’s shot was stopped at the line by Nico Tagliafico, and shortly after, Onana was forced to step in on a shot by Midtsjø.  Ajax had a few good moments, and the best was for Donny van de Beek.  He saw his header get turned away by Ron Vlaar.

Well deserved 1-0 for AZ via Til
Ajax started off better in the second half and, via Dolberg, had a chance to score the opening goal.  The Dane’s header went wide.  After that, Stengs had 2 good opportunities, but Daley Blind took good action on his first play, and he shot over the goal on his second.

But it was AZ that took the lead in the 56th minute.  In a packed goal area, Guus Til sent the ball against the ropes after a corner kick.  It was well deserved, as Joh van den Brom’s team was very well organized, and Ajax was unable to come up with any solutions.  Also, the visitors were very sloppy when in possession of the ball.

Outstanding Bizot
In the last fifteen minutes, Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s job was to erase the deficit.  The striker, who is still looking for his 100th Eredivisie goal for Ajax, came in for David Neres.  Earlier, Schöne had been substituted out for Noa Lang.  The Hunter’s first contact with the ball was an amazing header which was fished out from under the crossbar by Marco Bizot.  The outstanding AZ goalie did the same thing later on a hard shot by Mazraoui.

The final minutes were very exciting.  Tagliafico sent in a hard shot.  AZ then countered, but Onana made another great save.  Van de Beek had the ultimate chance to score the 1-1 goal, but his shot went over.  Because Ajax was hunting for the tying goal, the Alkmaar forwards had a lot of room to manoeuver.  They didn’t manage to do anything with this, and the score remained1-0.

Juve hadn't lost away since Nov 2017

Mar 17, 2019

Juventus have seen several records shattered with their shock 2-0 defeat to Genoa, ending a 31-round unbeaten streak, but their first away loss since November 2017.

The Old Lady had been unbeaten in this tournament so far this season, losing 1-0 at home to Napoli on April 22, 2018.

Juve hadn’t lost a Serie A match by a two-goal margin since their 3-1 to Roma in May 2017.

The Bianconeri failed to find the net, ending a run of 27 consecutive rounds on target.

When it comes to purely an away Serie A fixture, Juventus were unbeaten since another trip to Marassi, although that time it was 3-2 to Sampdoria, on November 19, 2017.

That was their only Serie A away defeat suffered last season and the only one since a 3-1 at Roma on May 14, 2017.

Genoa had also earned a 1-1 draw in Turin back in the reverse fixture, when Ivan Juric was still the Coach.

That means it’s the first season that the Grifone have gone unbeaten against Juventus since 2011-12, when it was two draws.

'Ajax lost to a doped Juve!' :|

L'ex Endt: «La Juve nel 1996 era un po' dopata, l'Ajax vuole vendicarsi»

https://www.football-italia.net/135959/ajax-lost-doped-juve

Mar 19, 2019

Ajax’s former team manager claims the club want ‘revenge’ against Juventus because the Bianconeri ‘perhaps doped’ in the 1996 Champions League Final.

This season’s quarter-final between Ajax and Juve is a rematch of the mid-90s showpiece in Rome, when the Old Lady beat the Dutch side on penalties for their last triumph in the competition.

However, David Endt - who worked for the Amsterdam outfit between 1993 and 2013 - suggested the tie had a more sinister backdrop.

“Juve are the real favourites, there’s no doubt about that, but with the ruthless nature of Ajax’s football, anything is possible,” Endt told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“After that, we have something else... revenge, I’d say. True, very true, because at the time in Rome, we played against a Juventus side who later turned out to be perhaps a bit doped, no-one knows the truth…

“That still burns us. It’s another reason, with all due respect for Juve.”

Del Piero: 'Juventus will win Champions'

https://www.football-italia.net/136179/del-piero-juventus-will-win-champions

Mar 24, 2019

Alessandro Del Piero believes Juventus “will win the Champions League sooner or later with Cristiano Ronaldo. I was surprised to see him sign, but not that surprised.”

The Bianconeri will face Ajax in the quarter-finals after overturning a 2-0 deficit to beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 on aggregate with a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick.

“It was a huge achievement with Atletico, but those who already know this club were not surprised,” Del Piero told Marca.

“We know the club, the mentality, the players and that everything is possible. It wasn’t simple, they had to put in the perfect performance and Atletico simply disappeared.

“This Juve side is making history and the Champions League trophy will arrive eventually. Cristiano Ronaldo was brought in for this, however, if it doesn’t happen this season, that won’t necessarily make it a failure. That is too harsh a word and I wouldn’t say that.

“The project is to win it with Cristiano in the side and his contract is for a few years, so there’s time. Obviously, it’s better if it comes sooner rather than later…”

Del Piero was playing when Juventus last won the tournament, beating Ajax on penalties in Rome in 1996.

“That was a different time and football has changed so much in the intervening years. Ajax had already won the Champions League then and had so many talents that in a couple of years would be at bigger clubs. The way this current Ajax side beat Real Madrid in the last round was fantastic, though.

“It’s going to be a tough task, but this Juve was one of the candidates to win the Champions League from the very beginning. They built a very strong squad and added Cristiano Ronaldo to it.

“He is a champion who has won everything, he knows how to play these games. Juve signed him in order to pursue the Champions League and so far the plan is working well.

“I will admit, I was surprised to see him come to Juve, but ultimately not that surprised. Cristiano wanted a club that was valued all over the world, so choosing Juve was a great idea.”

Pirlo: Juve can 'destroy' Ajax

https://www.football-italia.net/136207/pirlo-juve-can-destroy-ajax

Mar 25, 2019

Andrea Pirlo believes Juventus are ‘better’ than Barcelona and that they can ‘destroy’ Ajax in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Juve are considered to have been handed one of the better last-eight draws, despite Ajax thrashing Real Madrid in the previous round, and Pirlo is backing his former club to deliver.

“Ajax are a good draw. Physically Juve can destroy them,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Juventus seem better than Barcelona, but [Manchester] City are dangerous. I already gave [Juve] a big chance of winning [the Champions League].

“That’s providing they convince themselves that it’s necessary to play with that rhythm and mentality from the first minute of every game [referring to the second leg against Atletico Madrid], which is what Juve didn’t do in Madrid.”

Deschamps hits back at doping claim

https://www.football-italia.net/136204/deschamps-hits-back-doping-claim

Didier Deschamps has hit back at claims that Juventus doped against Ajax in 1996. “What happens on the pitch is the only truth that counts.”

David Endt, Ajax’s former team manager and Press officer, suggested the Dutch side were out for revenge against Juve in the Champions League quarter-finals on the basis of his allegation.

Deschamps was part of the Bianconeri side who beat Ajax in the 1996 Champions League Final, and the France CT was dismissive of Endt’s remarks.

“They’re always statements that can cause doubt, but there’s no need for them,” he told Sport Mediaset.

“There’s the truth of what happens on the pitch. That’s the only one that counts.”

The fixture list for this summer’s International Champions Cup has been released, with Juventus, Inter, Milan and Roma all involved.

As expected, Juve will play all their matches in Asia, starting in Singapore against Tottenham Hotspur on July 21.

They will then take on arch-rivals Inter in China three days later, before rounding off the campaign on August 10 in Stockholm against Champions League victims Atletico Madrid.

It had been reported that the Bianconeri chose to play in China and Singapore to avert the risk of Cristiano Ronaldo possibly being detained by US authorities.

However, the club have since denied that to be the case, explaining they preferred to play in Asia after several summers in North America.

Roma will be the first Italian team to take to the field, kicking off the International Champions Cup against Mexican side Guadalajara on July 17 at the Seatgeek Stadium in Bridgeview.

The Giallorossi then face Arsenal at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, prior to ending their participation on July 25 against Benfica at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison.

Inter, meanwhile, get the ball rolling against Manchester United in Singapore on July 20 and travel to Tottenham Hotspur on August 4.

The Nerazzurri already have a friendly with Spurs scheduled for this Saturday to help open the Londoners’ new stadium.

Finally, Milan lock horns with Bayern Munich in Kansas City on July 24 and Benfica in Foxborough four days later.

The Rossoneri bow out with a glamour friendly against United at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on August 3.

Other notable encounters see Bayern do battle with old foes Madrid, who in turn face city rivals Atleti for the first time outside of the Spanish capital.

Tottenham are the tournament’s reigning champions, finishing ahead of Borussia Dortmund and Inter on goal difference.

Allegri: Caution over Ronaldo

https://www.football-italia.net/136354/allegri-caution-over-ronaldo

Mar 29, 2019

Juventus boss Max Allegri says ‘caution’ is needed with Cristiano Ronaldo as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

Juve will be without Ronaldo for their Serie A match against Empoli on Saturday, but Allegri is confident Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Federico Bernardeschi will step up to the plate in the Portuguese’s absence.

“He had the day off,” replied the Coach when asked about the No 7’s day in Barcelona.

“Anyway he’s fine, he’s started moving again but caution is needed because we’re in a delicate part of the season.

“It’s better that he misses a game. He’ll return when he’s at his best and there’s no longer danger of a relapse.

“Kean must go step by step. He’s a 19-year-old boy, my concern is how he goes on from here, like with all young players.

“He needs to stay calm. It’s clear that he has the qualities of a goalscorer, but we have to let him take his normal path and let him grow. My job is to protect him.

“All our players have recovered from their international commitments, and we still have a day to go.

“Tomorrow we’ll all be in excellent physical condition, but the one that will make the difference is our mental condition.

“We must get closer to our objective of the title. Cristiano will have tests on Monday and so will Douglas Costa so they can get back fully for the Champions League.

“De Sciglio is available, Cuadrado will be available in about 10 days. As for Khedira, we’ll see next week.

“Bonucci will rest tomorrow. In attack it’s likely that Dybala, Mandzukic and Bernardeschi will play.

“The mental risk is due to the break, which is a bit of a thorn for us, plus the fact that a 15-point lead can distract us.

“Still, we were all angry about losing at Genoa. Tomorrow we need to put in a solid performance.

“We need to put in a serious performance, with great respect for our opponents, and win: I demand my team to be tough.

“We didn’t have the right ruthlessness in our game against Genoa, which would’ve been enough to overturn the result.

“We need five victories: let’s start tomorrow. The game is very important, we have so many challenges from now until April 22, five in the League and two in the Champions League.

“Finding ourselves in a vortex like the one we’re in only lasts for a second, so we mustn’t pull the plug now, thinking we’ve already won the League.

Allegri was then asked about Daniele Rugani’s new contract, Paulo Dybala’s role in the team and the Bianconeri’s upcoming clash with Milan.

“Rugani is a responsible lad and has grown a lot: the club did well to renew his contract,” he added.

“I talked to Dybala and he knows he’s important for us. He’ll have a great end to the season.

“We’ll only play Milan when we’re told to do so.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, as expected, misses Juventus’ Serie A match against Empoli on Saturday, but Mattia De Sciglio is back.

Ronaldo was rested for Juve’s 2-0 defeat to Genoa last time out, but the No 7 then picked up a hamstring injury during the international break.

However, De Sciglio has recovered from a muscle problem that has kept him out for the past three weeks.

The full-back is joined in the squad by Mattia Perin, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Moise Kean and Federico Bernardeschi – all of whom represented Italy over the past fortnight.

Sami Khedira, Douglas Costa, Andrea Barzagli and Juan Cuadrado, on the other hand, remain sidelined.

Juve squad to face Empoli: Szczesny, Perin, Pinsoglio; De Sciglio, Chiellini, Caceres, Alex Sandro, Bonucci, Cancelo, Rugani; Pjanic, Matuidi, Emre Can, Bentancur, Nicolussi Caviglia; Dybala, Mandzukic, Kean, Bernardeschi

Kean rescues disappointing Juventus

Mar 30, 2019

Juventus were outplayed for the entire first half by Empoli, but Moise Kean came off the bench and scored the winner with his second touch.

The Bianconeri lost their first Serie A match of the season, falling 2-0 to Genoa ahead of the break for international duty, but it made little difference to their lead at the top of the table. Aurelio Andreazzoli marked his comeback in place of sacked Beppe Iachini with a 2-1 victory over Frosinone to keep their heads above water.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Douglas Costa, Juan Cuadrado and Andrea Barzagli were injured, with Paulo Dybala pulling out during the warm-up with a right thigh issue, so Rodrigo Bentancur stepped in. Matias Silvestre was suspended for the visitors, with Antonino La Gumina, Levan Mchedlidze, Kevin Diks and Jacob Rasmussen unavailable.

Diego Farias hesitated when one-on-one with Wojciech Szczesny, sent clear by a Rade Krunic back-heel flick and Ciccio Caputo through ball, allowing Daniele Rugani to close him down for a corner.

Empoli dominated early on, the crowd grumbling at Joao Cancelo defensive errors, Rugani’s sliding block cutting off Farias again and Krunic drilling just wide on a couple of occasions.

Juve only threatened on the counter-attack and with a Mario Mandzukic diving header that tested Bartlomiej Dragowski.

Federico Bernardeschi’s daisy-cutter was fingertipped away and he almost scored a stunner, his acrobatic volley off the outside of the boot clipping the crossbar under pressure from Cristian Dell’Orco.

The Bianconeri improved considerably as time wore on, Bernardeschi’s half-volley over and a Cancelo effort flashing in front of Mandzukic.

The biggest cheer from the crowd came when 19-year-old Kean was introduced, swiftly followed by his goal three minutes later. It was only his second touch, as Mandzukic nodded down a long ball and Kean let it bounce inside the box before smashing in the half-volley. It rounded off the perfect week, scoring for Italy against both Finland and Liechtenstein.

Kean was sent clear again by Pjanic and a Domenico Maietta error, but Dragowski managed a desperate one-handed save.

Empoli kept pushing to the end, but Rugani and Chiellini cleaned everything up.

Juventus: Szczesny; Cancelo, Rugani, Chiellini, Alex Sandro (Spinazzola 61); Emre Can, Pjanic, Matuidi (Kean 69); Bernardeschi (Caceres 84), Mandzukic, Bentancur

Empoli: Dragowski; Veseli, Maietta (Pasqual 80), Dell’Orco; Di Lorenzo, Traoré, Bennacer, Krunic (Acquah 80), Pajac (Ucan 80); Farias, Caputo

Kean: 'Hope to reach Ronaldo level'

Moise Kean hit another winner for Juventus against Empoli and the 19-year-old said he “hopes to one day reach the level of Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi.”

The Italy international capped off a glorious week after scoring in Euro 2020 qualifiers against both Finland and Liechtenstein.

He came off the bench this evening and got the winner to beat Empoli 1-0 with only his second touch.

It means he has become the youngest player since Mario Balotelli (who was 18 years and 242 days old in 2009) to reach eight Serie A goals.

“I’m very happy at another record. As I said, I’m always ready to beat some more records,” he told Sky Sport Italia, aged 19 years and 31 days.

“Hard work is the only thing that can help me prove what I can do every single weekend.”

Max Allegri said in his Press conference that people had to calm the clamour around Kean, because he is “not Cristiano Ronaldo, nor Messi” and too much attention was unhealthy.

“If the Coach says that, then it’s true. Of course I am not Cristiano or Messi. I hope to one day reach their level, if I work hard enough.”

Allegri: 'Kean mustn't lose way'

Max Allegri insists he was right not to start Moise Kean against Empoli, even though he came off the bench to score the Juventus winner.

The 19-year-old is on stunning form right now and fresh from scoring his first two senior Italy goals against Finland and Liechtenstein.

After getting the winning goal today, Kean said he aims to one day reach the level of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

“It’s only right to have ambition when you are training with Juventus and surrounded by these champions. The difference at this level is mentality and he needs to above all be professional over time, be ready to work hard and improve every day.

“He’s got the characteristics and the quality to be a great player, but so did many lads who lost their way over the years,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

When Paulo Dybala pulled out in the warm-up, was he tempted to introduce Kean rather than Rodrigo Bentancur?

“No, because scoring two goals for Italy in as many games, having all that attention, it uses up a lot of energy both physically and mentally. He returned from international duty and looked like he barely knew where he was.

“We had a few players who were tired after international duty and you need to share out the effort in these situations.

“Dybala had a knock during international duty and he felt the muscle harden during the warm-up, so we decided not to risk it.

“We struggled in the first half and couldn’t get a grip on Empoli’s shape, but we changed some things and had an excellent second half, not allowing them a shot on goal.

“Empoli were very aggressive early on and we showed patience, waited for them to drop and raised our tempo, revving up the engine. Sometimes you need to do that, it’s not that because we are Juventus, we automatically win every game.

“It’s never easy after the break for international duty and it was good that we won like this, 1-0 with a struggle to get the points. It’s another step forward.

“We had prepared Dybala between the lines, but losing him at the last minute, I had to make some changes. I decided to wait until half-time to make the necessary adjustments, as it was quite difficult to get the message across.

“Now we have seven games in 20 days and fortunately we are recovering some players who can give us a big hand.”

Allegri optimistic over Ronaldo

https://www.football-italia.net/136477/allegri-optimistic-over-ronaldo

Apr 1, 2019

Max Allegri says he is ‘hopeful’ that Cristiano Ronaldo will be back for Juventus’ Champions League quarter-final with Ajax next week.

Ronaldo is currently sidelined with a hamstring problem and will miss Juve’s Serie A match against Cagliari on Tuesday, but Allegri is confident the No 7 will be back in time for the trip to Amsterdam.

“We hope to have Cristiano Ronaldo back for Ajax,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“Cuadrado is catching up. He’ll be with us in 7-10 days. Spinazzola had a knee problem but won’t need surgery.

“I believe that if everything goes well, he’ll be out for two weeks. Perin took a blow to the shoulder and we hope to have him back for Ajax.

“Douglas Costa is fine and he’ll be there against Ajax. Khedira was with the team yesterday and could return against Milan.

“Mandzukic has a fever, we’ll see if we can take him to Cagliari. We also have to assess Dybala today.

“It’ll be a difficult game against a team who transform themselves at home. Cagliari will try to do the business. It’ll be a stimulating game.

“I have yet to decide whether to play three or four at the back. Cancelo could play as a winger.

“We have so many good players like De Sciglio, Caceres and Bonucci. The midfielders are also doing well.”

Ronaldo’s injury opened the door for Moise Kean to follow up his first Italy goals with the winner against Empoli at the weekend...

“He’s fine and he scored in our last game,” added Allegri.

“He’s enthusiastic, he’s a 19-year-old boy who has great quality and is scoring right now.

“It can happen that your form drops, just like it happened to Bernardeschi at the start of the season.

“The team are doing well. We play every three days right now. Therefore, being able to rest is crucial.

“Emre Can is an example of enthusiasm and desire. After the problem he had at the beginning of the season, he’s improved a lot and he can also play in defence.”

Juventus have as many as nine players missing for their game against Cagliari in Serie A on Tuesday.

Mattia Perin, Leonardo Spinazzola, Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala join Andrea Barzagli, Juan Cuadrado, Sami Khedira, Douglas Costa and Cristiano Ronaldo on the sidelines for Juve.

To make up for the lack of numbers, Coach Max Allegri has promoted trio Grigoris Kastanos, Hans Nicolussi Caviglia and ex-Arsenal striker Stephy Mavididi from the Under-23 team.

However, the coast is clear for Italy sensation Moise Kean to lead the line in Sardinia after his winner against Empoli at the weekend.

Juve squad to face Cagliari: Szczesny, Pinsoglio, Del Favero; De Sciglio, Chiellini, Caceres, Alex Sandro, Bonucci, Cancelo, Rugani; Pjanic, Matuidi, Emre Can, Bentancur, Kastanos, Nicolussi Caviglia; Kean, Bernardeschi, Mavididi

A depleted Juventus are expected to go 3-5-2 against Cagliari, who have top goalscorer Leonardo Pavoletti back.

Mattia Perin, Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Spinazzola, Juan Cuadrado, Sami Khedira, Douglas Costa, Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic, Cristiano Ronaldo are all out for Juve.

That should see Max Allegri reshuffle his pack, starting with a back three of Martin Caceres, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

Up top, Moise Kean will start alongside Federico Bernardeschi after his winner off the bench against Empoli at the weekend

Cagliari, meanwhile, thrashed Chievo 3-0 last Friday for their first away win in Serie A since September.

They are further boosted by the return of Pavoletti, who scored for Italy during the international break but was suspended for the trip to the Bentegodi.

Cagliari (probable): Cragno; Cacciatore, Ceppitelli, Pisacane, Pellegrini; Padoin, Cigarini, Ionita; Barella; Joao Pedro, Pavoletti

Moise Kean starts in a decimated Juventus team for the tricky trip to Leonardo Pavoletti’s Cagliari, fresh from three straight home wins.

It kicks off at the Sardegna Arena at 20.00 UK time - 21.00 CET.

The Serie A midweek round arrives at a bad time for the Bianconeri, because Max Allegri has few choices available during an injury crisis.

Cristiano Ronaldo is joined on the treatment table by Paulo Dybala, Leonardo Spinazzola, Andrea Barzagli, Sami Khedira, Juan Cuadrado, Douglas Costa and flu-ridden Mario Mandzukic.

Kean therefore gets his chance to start for Juve and is on sparkling form, as the 19-year-old found the net in both full senior Italy caps against Finland and Liechtenstein, then came off the bench to score the Juve winner against Empoli at the weekend.

Allegri switches back to the 3-5-2 formation with Federico Bernardeschi in support, Mattia De Sciglio and Alex Sandro as wing-backs.

Martin Caceres comes in to the defence, although his versatility means the system could change without necessarily introducing other players.

Cagliari are eight points clear of the relegation zone thanks to a recent spurt of form, which has seen them win three home games on the bounce.

They even thrashed Chievo 3-0 at the weekend for their first away victory since September.

Pavoletti was suspended for that game, but returns refreshed and raring to go tonight, supported by Joao Pedro and Arsenal transfer target Nicolò Barella.

If the Sardinians win this evening, it’ll be the first time they’ve managed three straight Serie A victories since October 2016.

However, Juve are unbeaten against Cagliari in Serie A since November 2009, emerging with 13 wins and three draws.

They’ve won each of the last five encounters, home and away, with four clean sheets.

Cagliari: Cragno; Srna, Pisacane, Ceppitelli, Lykogiannis; Faragò, Cigarini, Ionita; Barella; Pavoletti, Joao Pedro

Leonardo Bonucci’s precise looping header has given Juventus the half-time lead over Cagliari in Sardinia.

The Bianconeri were decimated, missing Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala, Leonardo Spinazzola, Andrea Barzagli, Sami Khedira, Juan Cuadrado, Douglas Costa and flu-ridden Mario Mandzukic, so moved to a 3-5-2 formation. The Sardinians were seeking their fourth consecutive home win and welcomed Leonardo Pavoletti back from suspension.

Juve were unbeaten against Cagliari in Serie A since November 2009, emerging with 13 wins and three draws.

Martin Caceres got just enough on to a Miralem Pjanic free kick at the back stick, forcing Alessio Cragno into a reaction save from six yards.

Although Cagliari are well known for their danger on set plays, it was Juve who opened the scoring from a Federico Bernardeschi corner, as Leonardo Bonucci was allowed a free header from 10 yards to steer it into the far bottom corner.

Joao Pedro came close to an equaliser, firing over from a Nicolò Barella roll across from the right.

Leonardo Bonucci’s looping header and a late Moise Kean tap-in gave Juventus all three points away to Cagliari, but there was tension in Sardinia.

Juve are now unbeaten against Cagliari in Serie A since November 2009, emerging with 14 wins and three draws.

On another set play, Nicolò Barella saw his strike charged down, while Kean managed to squirm between two defenders to flick on a long Pjanic ball, calling Cragno into action.

Caceres pulled up clutching his hamstring and immediately limped off, while Charalampos Lykogiannis was perhaps fortunate not to receive a second yellow card for his unnecessary barge sending Kean into the advertising boards.

Bernardeschi thought his volley on a Blaise Matuidi cross was going in and it may well have been were it not for a deflection off teammate Kean.

Pavoletti’s header from a Luca Cigarini free kick floated over and Cragno rushed outside his own penalty area for a brave header to parry Kean’s attempted lob.

Kean did double their lead in the final minutes, as Rodrigo Bentancur sprinted down the right and rolled across perfectly for the 19-year-old to sneak up behind Darijo Srna and tap in from four yards. His celebration was a Mario Balotelli-style challenge to the crowd that had been jeering him since he was booked for simulation in the first half. This sparked an even worse reaction from the Cagliari fans, some of whom engaged in racist chants, which in turn infuriated Matuidi.

Cagliari: Cragno; Srna, Pisacane, Ceppitelli, Lykogiannis; Faragò (Padoin 76), Cigarini, Ionita (Birsa 68); Barella; Pavoletti, Joao Pedro (Cerri 76)

Juventus: Szczesny; Caceres (Bentancur 61), Bonucci, Chiellini; De Sciglio, Emre Can, Pjanic, Matuidi, Alex Sandro; Bernardeschi, Kean

Kean: 'Best response to racism'

Juventus and Italy star Moise Kean confirms his goal celebration against Cagliari was “the best way to respond to racism.”

The 19-year-old had already been insulted throughout the 2-0 Bianconeri victory at the Sardegna Arena on Tuesday evening,

When he scored at the 85th minute, he stood arms outstretched in front of the ultras behind the net, sparking even more furious and openly racist abuse from the stands.

Teammate Leonardo Bonucci sparked controversy by telling Sky Sport Italia straight after the final whistle that Kean had provoked the fans.

“Kean knows that when he scores a goal, he has to focus on celebrating with his teammates. He knows he could’ve done something differently too,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia.

“There were racist jeers after the goal, Blaise heard it and was angered. I think the blame is 50-50, because Moise shouldn’t have done that and the Curva should not have reacted that way.

“We are professionals, we have to set the example and not provoke anyone.”

It seems as if Matuidi and Kean do not agree.
