Sarri: 'Juve didn't use brains'

Dec 1, 2019

Maurizio Sarri feels Juventus “didn’t use our brains” enough in the 2-2 draw with Sassuolo. “We lost the ball cheaply and made daft errors.”

The Bianconeri had taken an early lead through Leonardo Bonucci, but Jeremie Boga and Francesco Caputo turned it around. Juve needed a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty to earn a point.

“I spoke to the team for 30 seconds after the game,” Sarri told DAZN.

“It wasn’t a negative performance, but we opened up far too many spaces, lost the ball cheaply and didn’t use our brains. It went better in the second half, but in the first we got the feeling there wasn’t enough focus.

“We made some really daft errors, conceding a goal because we were too sluggish tracking back. The build-up play was slow too, the midfield movements were off. I think it was because we were coming off two very stressful games and it wasn’t easy to recharge the batteries.

“The team lacked a bit of brain and soul. The reaction came at the end and we could even have won it.”

Sarri threw on Paulo Dybala with Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain, but ultimately removed Pipita for Aaron Ramsey.

“We created chances with those three, but once Sassuolo managed to pass the ball, you could tell we were struggling. The only solution was to bring back a little solidity with Ramsey.”

The second Sassuolo goal was a catalogue of errors from Juve, culminating in a Gigi Buffon fumble.

“It was an incredible series of mistakes, from a bad back-pass to another that hit a Sassuolo player. When you aren’t fully focused, a howler can happen.”

Marotta: 'Juve will win this season...'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor marotta inter

Dec 5, 2019

Inter director general Beppe Marotta “did not expect such an immediate impact” from Antonio Conte, but insists Juventus remain the Scudetto favourites.

The Nerazzurri are top of the Serie A table with a club record start of 12 wins in the opening 14 rounds, now one point ahead of Juventus.

“It’s still only Week 14, so we are well aware that winning the Scudetto from this first season will be difficult,” Marotta said at a PR event this evening.

“Juve have two very strong teams to call on, as they have two players for every role, and I think they’ll do it again this season…

“In any case, I will admit that I did not expect such an immediate impact from Antonio Conte on our squad.”

The Bianconeri have won the last eight consecutive Serie A titles.

Juventus have announced their squad for Saturday’s trip to Lazio, as Adrien Rabiot and Marko Pjaca return, but Aaron Ramsey and Sami Khedira miss out.

It kicks off on Saturday at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

Khedira and Ramsey are the latest additions to the absentee list, with the German expected to be out for two to three months.

Douglas Costa and Giorgio Chiellini are still on the treatment table, but there is a surprise re-entry for Pjaca, who has barely played over the past two years due to various injuries.

To bulk up the numbers in a depleted midfield, Maurizio Sarri has called up two Under-23 players, Manolo Portanova and Simone Muratore.

Juventus squad for Lazio: Szczesny, Pinsoglio, Buffon; De Sciglio, De Ligt, Alex Sandro, Danilo, Bonucci, Rugani, Demiral; Pjanic, Matuidi, Emre Can, Rabiot, Bentancur, Muratore, Portanova; Ronaldo, Dybala, Cuadrado, Pjaca, Higuain, Bernardeschi

Sarri: 'Lazio possible contenders'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor sarri conferenza stampa pre lazio juventus 7 dicembre

Dec 6, 2019

Maurizio Sarri warns Juventus will be facing potential Scudetto contenders in Lazio on Saturday as he expects a hard-fought battle at the Olimpico.

Juve take on a Lazio side third in Serie A this weekend, and Sarri believes the Aquile have a chance to play their way into the title race after a strong run of domestic form.

“At this moment they give us this feeling of a strong team,” he said at a press conference.

“They have picked up 18 points from their last six games. They are on a very good run of form.

“They’re a strong team with great quality. They’re the best team for picking out passes in the last 25 metres, even in Europe.

“We need this data for our own adjustments, they’re tough opponents. It will be a difficult game.”

Despie that, the coach is tipping the Old Lady to bounce back from their 2-2 draw with Sassuolo last weekend.

“After watching the training sessions, I am confident. Anyway, we must respond on the pitch. All the points are important, so all the games are important.

“I understand from a journalistic point of view that some matches will be emphasised, but I repeat; all games are important. Points are crucial.”

The 60-year-old said he was hoping his side would gain some extra “motivation” by trailing Inter in the table.

If the Nerazzurri win their match against Roma on Friday, they will provisionally extend their lead at the top to four points.

“I hope so. We might be stimulated by having a team ahead of us. It could be a source of great motivation."

Sami Khedira and Aaron Ramsey are out of the trip to Rome with injury, while Federico Bernardeschi has faced criticism for his performances this season...

“I’m not happy, but there are periods during the season where this situation might occur. But [Adrien] Rabiot is fine, he has been training with the team and has recovered.

“I expect a violent approach from them, they're on a positive run. We will have to hold on, then grab the game with our hands and keep away from our own penalty area.

“Bernardeschi is a sensitive guy, and this is evident when we play away from home. His performances are different when he is in a safe environment at home.

“He is an important player; he doesn’t need to be influenced by anything or anyone. My task is to accompany him, rather than to test him.

“We will try to play Bernardeschi, while counting on Douglas Costa’s recovery. Without Douglas Costa, it’s difficult to play with a trio.

Khedira will be out for some time after undergoing knee surgery, so could Emre Can capitalise?

“He [Emre Can] has made some appearances; he is not an excluded player. He is just out of the list registered for the Champions League. But that was a tough blow for him mentally.

“He knows he will be considered in the League, if he performs.

“Khedira has a great personality, his knee was getting worse over the last 10 days and we couldn’t do anything but operate on it. Now we must help the others improve."

Probable line-ups: Lazio vs Juventus

Lazio and Juventus both go into this evening's clash with injuries, with the Bianconeri hit particularly hard in midfield and the usual doubt upfront.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

Simone Inzaghi is set to continue with his standard 3-5-2 formation.

Adam Marusic, Valon Berisha and Jordan Lukaku are still on the treatment table, whilst Patric remains a doubt due to a calf problem.

Lucas Leiva will be the Biancocelesti’s midfield fulcrum, alongside Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Capocannoniere Ciro Immobile, once of Juventus, will lead the line alongside Joaquin Correa rather than Felipe Caicedo.

Immobile is one of Europe’s deadliest strikers, with 19 goals in 17 games for Lazio this season in all competitions, and will be keen to score against his old side.

The Bianconeri meanwhile have limited options in the middle of the field, so much so that they've called up two U-23 midfielders in Manolo Portanova and Simone Muratore. But it is expected that Maurizio Sarri will implement the 4-3-1-2 that has become his go-to formation this season.

Sami Khedira is out for three months after having successful knee surgery this week.

Welsh international Aaron Ramsey is also out injured with another muscular problem.

Wojciech Szczesny should return after being rested for the 2-2 draw against Sassuolo. Blaise Matuidi should also return to midfield after playing half an hour against the Neroverdi last weekend.

Adrien Rabiot has been called up to the squad, but is highly unlikely to start.

Douglas Costa and Giorgio Chiellini remain sidelined.

Federico Bernardeschi is expected to play as a trequartista.

Paulo Dybala is tipped to start up front alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, with Gonzalo Higuain on the bench.

Probable line-ups

Lazio (3-5-2): Strakosha; Radu, Acerbi, Felipe; Lulic, Luis Alberto, Lucas Leiva, Milinkovic-Savic, Lazzari; Immobile, Correa

Juventus (4-3-1-2): Szczesny; Cuadrado, Bonucci, De Ligt, Alex Sandro; Matuidi, Pjanic, Bentancur; Bernardeschi; Dybala, Ronaldo

Line-ups: Lazio v Juventus

Dec 7, 2019

Lazio look to Capocannoniere Ciro Immobile and Joaquin Correa, while Juventus can recapture top spot with Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 19.45 GMT.

This is a top of the table showdown between third and second, but as Inter were held to a goalless draw by Roma last night, a victory would make Juventus the new leaders.

It won’t be easy, because Simone Inzaghi’s men have won their last six Serie A games and have the runaway top scorer in the tournament, Ciro Immobile.

The striker, who for a brief moment played for Juventus, has 17 Serie A goals this season, already more than Cristiano Ronaldo (six), Dybala (four) and Gonzalo Higuain (four) put together.

He is again partnered by Tucu Correa rather than Felipe Caicedo, but Patric, Adam Marusic, Valon Berisha and Jordan Lukaku are out of action.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Lucas Leiva and Luis Alberto pull the midfield strings.

Juventus have lost Sami Khedira for three months following knee surgery, joining Giorgio Chiellini, Douglas Costa and Aaron Ramsey on the treatment table.

Federico Bernardeschi is therefore the trequartista again behind Ronaldo and Dybala, sending Higuain to the bench.

This is Dybala’s 200th appearance for Juventus in all competition.

Juventus have a famously excellent record against Lazio, losing only one of their last 29 Serie A meetings, with 22 wins and six draws.

Since that 2-0 defeat in December 2003, the Bianconeri left the Olimpico with 11 victories and three stalemates.

The referee this evening is Michael Fabbri, with Massimiliano Irrati in the VAR booth.

Lazio: Strakosha; Luiz Felipe, Acerbi, Radu; Lazzari, Milinkovic-Savic, Leiva, Luis Alberto, Lulic; Correa, Immobile

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, Bonucci, De Ligt, Alex Sandro; Bentancur, Pjanic, Matuidi; Bernardeschi; Dybala, Ronaldo

HT 1-1: Exhilarating Lazio-Juventus!

Dec 7, 2019

It’s 1-1 at the break in a pulsating match between Lazio and Juventus, as Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal was wiped out by a Luiz Felipe header.

This was a big showdown between third and second, as the Aquile were on a six-round winning streak and the Bianconeri knew a victory would put them back on top of the table, as Inter were held by Roma last night. Aaron Ramsey, Sami Khedira, Douglas Costa and Giorgio Chiellini were out injured, while the hosts missed Patric, Adam Marusic, Jordan Lukaku and Valon Berisha.

Juve were unbeaten here in Serie A since December 2003, emerging with 11 wins and three draws.

Ciro Immobile was Capocannoniere with 17 goals, more than Paulo Dybala, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain put together. He almost made it 18 within five minutes, his shot deflected over by Matthijs de Ligt’s block.

Thomas Strakosha flew to palm away a Dybala curler, doing the same when La Joya tried to bend in directly from the corner flag. Federico Bernardeschi was off balanced and couldn’t steer in a header on Ronaldo’s floated cross.

Juve broke through on 25 minutes with a well-worked team move. Dybala was involved too before a give-and-go, as Rodrigo Bentancur rolled it across the six-yard box for Cristiano Ronaldo to tap in at the back post.

Immobile went down in the penalty area as Juan Cuadrado leaned on his back, but not enough to warrant a spot-kick, then Bentancur brought down Correa inches from the penalty area.

Lazio had a series of chances charged down on a corner, then Immobile nodded a Manuel Lazzari cross wide, but Juve lost Bentancur to a knee injury.

It was wide open, as Bernardeschi sprung the offside trap to pull back from the by-line for Ronaldo’s diving header, but Strakosha clawed it off the line.

Lazio had penalty appeals for an Emre Can sliding tackle on Lucas Leiva, but the VAR opted against an on-field review. Nonetheless, from that corner, Luis Alberto whipped a cross to the six-yard box for Luiz Felipe’s glancing header to equalise right on the stroke of half-time.

Lazio 1-1 Juventus (Half-Time)

Ronaldo 25 (J), Luiz Felipe 45 (L)

Lazio: Strakosha; Luiz Felipe, Acerbi, Radu; Lazzari, Milinkovic-Savic, Leiva, Luis Alberto, Lulic; Correa, Immobile

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, Bonucci, De Ligt, Alex Sandro; Bentancur (Emre Can 40), Pjanic, Matuidi; Bernardeschi; Dybala, Ronaldo

Bentancur strained knee ligament

Juventus announce Rodrigo Bentancur has no knee ligament lesions, but he “will be evaluated day by day.”

The midfielder limped off during last night’s 3-1 Serie A defeat to Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

There were concerns he had damaged the medial collateral ligament in the right knee following a knock.

However, tests showed only a strain to the ligament and no lesions.

“Following the diagnostic tests carried out this morning at J|Medical, this is the player's diagnosis, who was forced to leave the action early in last night's game,” read a statement.

“During the match against Lazio, Bentancur suffered direct bruising with consequent distraction of the medial collateral ligament of the right leg.

“Today, he underwent treatments and recovery. The player will be evaluated day by day.”

Sarri: 'Red card changed everything'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor lazio juventus 3-1 sarri

https://www.football-italia.net/147370/sarri-red-card-changed-everything

Dec 8, 2019

Maurizio Sarri was not too concerned after Juventus suffered their first defeat of the season, 3-1 against Lazio. “The red card changed everything.”

The Bianconeri had been the only team remaining in Europe’s top five leagues who were unbeaten in all competition, but that run came to an end at the Stadio Olimpico.

“I thought we had a good first half, doing very, very well, but unfortunately allowed that goal right on the stroke of half-time,” Sarri told DAZN.

“The second half was dominated by incidents, most of which went against us, but when it was 11 against 11, we did very well.”

Cristiano Ronaldo and Luiz Felipe had it at 1-1 when Juan Cuadrado saw red for interrupting a clear Manuel Lazzari scoring opportunity.

This opened the floodgates, as Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Felipe Caicedo turned the game around completely.

It could even have been more, but Wojciech Szczesny saved the Ciro Immobile penalty.

“We didn’t respect our duties, because players were in the wrong position, it was a distraction and you pay for that. We had decided before the game on certain positions and we didn’t cover them,” continued Sarri.

The referee had initially only booked Cuadrado, but changed his decision to a red after an on-field VAR review.

“I do not entirely agree that it was a clear scoring opportunity, as the ball was going wide. I thought a yellow card was the right ruling, as the red was a little harsh, but the fact remains that is out of our control and we made a mistake to create the situation in the first place.”

Rodrigo Bentancur went off before half-time after a knock to the knee and the initial diagnosis is not reassuring.

“Bentancur will have the tests tomorrow, the collateral ligament seems to be involved to some degree, we’ll see how much. Bentancur is a decisive player for us at the moment, so we missed him a great deal once he came off.

“Sami Khedira will be out for three months, so we’ll have to work something out over the next few weeks and see if we can resolve other situations quickly.

“Federico Bernardeschi and Aaron Ramsey could probably be used in that role, so we’ll see about some tests there.”

This was the first competitive defeat of the season for Juventus, but Sarri is not concerned.

“I didn’t see many mistakes in the first half, we passed it around well and had the chance to make it 2-0 with Cristiano’s header. We were perhaps a little slow to react on the corner, which sparked their goal.

“In the second half, when the game seemed to be in a more balanced state, the red card changed everything. We lost the match, but to be honest, I saw improvements in my team.”

Lippi: 'Juve not in a crisis!'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor marcello lippi 2019

https://www.football-italia.net/147455/lippi-juve-not-crisis

Dec 9, 2019

Former Juventus boss Marcello Lippi says it’s absurd to think that the Bianconeri are in a crisis. “They’ve only lost one game...”

Juve fell to their first defeat of the season at the weekend, going down 3-1 to Lazio, but Lippi made it clear Maurizio Sarri needed more time to implement his style on the team.

“They have only lost one game, on Saturday,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.

“Before that they had never lost. Maurizio Sarri needs time. He doesn’t have a magic wand.”

Asked if Inter played better football under Old Lady old boy Antonio Conte, his mentor insisted it was too early to say, while mentioning Lazio as Scudetto contenders.

“It is too soon. We need to wait until May. Conte is doing a great job but I didn’t think there would be any doubts. And I don’t think they are the only team to play for the Scudetto.

“I believe Lazio can put themselves in the title equation. They are a team who play great football and are a modern side with good players, especially in midfield. I like them a lot.”

The 71-year-old also commented on the Napoli situation, Milan’s pursuit of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Italy’s progress with Roberto Mancini.

“Ancelotti has had an extraordinary career, he is a coachwho’s won a lot.

“There are high and lows in life, and for now things are not going well in the League, but Napoli have time to readjust the situation.

“Milan are doing well by trying to buy Ibrahimovic as they are lacking a player with his charisma. He is a player who can give them a hand.”

“Everything is positive and beautiful. Roberto is doing very well; he has sent important messages to the clubs, asking them to let young players play and the clubs have listened to him.

“It bodes well for the future.”

The Azzurri won the World Cup in 2006 with Lippi as CT.

Sarri: 'Juve still changing mentality'

Maurizio Sarri joked about his unbeaten European record and warned Juventus are still “changing mentality” for a Champions League trip to Bayer Leverkusen.

It kicks off on Wednesday at 20.00 GMT, with the Bianconeri already sure of their status as group winners.

With Rodrigo Bentancur, Sami Khedira, Aaron Ramsey and Douglas Costa all injured, it has been suggested Federico Bernardeschi will move into midfield.

“It could happen, although I don’t know how many options I’d have in the trequartista role then, with Ramsey and Douglas Costa out,” replied Sarri in his press conference.

“Adrien Rabiot showed in pre-season he could do well on the right side of midfield, so we’ll see. The only unknown is whether Adrien can play 90 minutes after such a long time out.

“We know that we have to work to do better, but are calm because we are working. We need a spark nowadays, but that can be many things. We’ve got to move the ball quickly, otherwise possession becomes sterile, and not defend deep after we’ve taken the lead.

“It’s important that we always try to control the game. These are all things that represent a change of mentality at Juventus, so they do not come automatically. We’ve seen them in moments, for example the first half in Rome.”

Sarri also shrugged off questions about motivating his players in these circumstances.

“The first time I was contacted by the Juventus hierarchy, I asked how come they only managed three points in the final Serie A games of the season. I said it would be a bad sign of their mentality if they justified it with the fact the Scudetto had already been won.

“We have the privilege and the honour of playing in the Champions League. I expect a strong and focused performance, because there are always objectives. I ask for a performance, then the result can come or not.

“I am unbeaten in 21 European games. I think I read somewhere that the longest run for a coach in Europe is 22, so if my lads don’t get a result tomorrow, I’ll kill them!” he laughed.

“Clearly, the match I remember with most fondness is the Europa League Final with Chelsea, but I hope the run can last so long that I end up in another Final.”

With Juventus already qualified top of their group, could Sarri not risk the superstar trident of Paulo Dybala, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain?

“It’s an experiment, because we have used it during games, but also learned from that we cannot afford to keep it going for long periods.”

Juventus give playing time to Gigi Buffon, Merih Demiral and Daniele Rugani, with Juan Cuadrado in a new role and Cristiano Ronaldo upfront against Bayer Leverkusen.

It kicks off at 20.00 GMT at the BayArena in the final group game of the Champions League.

The Bianconeri are already sure of first place and can therefore afford to rest some players in Germany, although confidence could take a hit after their first competitive defeat of the season last week against Lazio.

There is a shortage of midfielders, as Sami Khedira, Rodrigo Bentancur, Aaron Ramsey, Douglas Costa and Giorgio Chiellini are injured, while Emre Can is not in their Champions League squad.

Maurizio Sarri therefore introduces Cuadrado in a new role as part of the three-man midfield with Miralem Pjanic, as both of them will be suspended in Serie A this weekend with Udinese.

Federico Bernardeschi takes the trequartista spot behind Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo.

There is playing time for Danilo, Rugani, Merih Demiral and Mattia De Sciglio.

Bayer Leverkusen can still qualify for the Round of 16, so are certainly not lacking in motivation this evening.

They are missing suspended Nadiem Amiri, plus injured Mitchell Weiser and Joel Pohjanpalo.

However, there are quite a few surprises, including an apparent change of system to 4-4-2 with talent Kai Havertz and Lucas Alario upfront.

Centre-forward Kevin Volland, who has seven goals and six assists in all competition this season, is on the bench along with Leon Bailey, Jonathan Tah and Julian Baumgartlinger.

Bayer Leverkusen: Hradecky; L Bender, Dragovic, S Bender, Sinkgraven; Bellarabi, Demirbay, Aranguiz, Diaby; Havertz, Alario

Bayer bench: Ozcan, Retsos, Tah, Bailey, Baumgartlinger, Wendell, Volland

Juventus: Buffon; Danilo, Demiral, Rugani, De Sciglio; Cuadrado, Pjanic, Rabiot; Bernardeschi; Higuain, Ronaldo

Juventus bench: Szczesny, Dybala, Alex Sandro, Matuidi, Bonucci, Muratore, Portanova

HT 0-0: Leverkusen rattle Juventus

Bayer Leverkusen rattled the woodwork with Moussa Diaby’s strike, but Juventus are holding on to 0-0 at the break.

The Bianconeri were already sure of first place in their group, so made several changes, with Sami Khedira, Rodrigo Bentancur, Aaron Ramsey, Douglas Costa and Giorgio Chiellini are injured, while Emre Can is not in their Champions League squad. Juan Cuadrado was given a new midfield role. Bayer Leverkusen made some surprising decisions too, as Nadiem Amiri was suspended, with Mitchell Weiser and Joel Pohjanpalo injured, but still benched Kevin Volland, Leon Bailey, Jonathan Tah and Julian Baumgartlinger.

Gonzalo Higuain had a good opportunity in the opening minutes, but his roll across for Cristiano Ronaldo was over-hit, when he could’ve just gone for goal himself.

Moments later, Moussa Diaby’s scorching strike bounced off the upright to the right of Gigi Buffon.

Ronaldo burst down the right and flashed a dangerous shot across the face of goal, Cuadrado skimming the woodwork from the edge of the box moments later.

Buffon had to be alert with his gloves stung by Karim Bellarabi, while Merih Demiral made a decisive sliding block on Kai Havertz from six yards.

CL 0-2: Dybala lights up Juve in Leverkusen

Dec 11, 2019

Juventus concluded their Champions League group stage with a joint record 16 points, as Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain scored on Paulo Dybala assists to beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0.

With five wins and a draw, this is the best ever Juve Champions League group stage performance, alongside Marcello Lippi’s team of 2004-05 and Fabio Capello's in 1996-97.

Cristiano Ronaldo had the ball in the net on 51 minutes, his strike bouncing in off the inside of the far post, but he was marginally offside.

Daley Sinkgraven made a crucial interception, as both Ronaldo and Federico Bernardeschi were lining up to tap in Higuain’s pass from six yards.

Sarri had to shake things up, as the tempo was dropping, so introduced Paulo Dybala to create the super-trident with Ronaldo and Higuain.

It paid off, because Juventus took the lead 10 minutes later. The move started with a Mattia De Sciglio nutmeg in midfield, Pjanic released Dybala down the left and he rolled across for Ronaldo to tap in.

Charles Aranguiz had the opportunity to grab a late equaliser, but turned wide from 12 yards off balance after Rugani’s misplaced clearance.

Instead, Juve doubled their lead in stoppages with another Dybala assist. Higuain controlled a long ball over the top, back-heeled it for La Joya and was ready to rifle home the return pass.

The game was twice halted in the final minutes for pitch invaders, who ran on trying to hug Ronaldo.

Sarri: 'Juve need this focus'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor maurizio sarri leverkusen juventus 0-2

Dec 11, 2019

Maurizio Sarri explained why he introduced Paulo Dybala to break the Bayer Leverkusen deadlock, but reiterated the importance of Juventus “focus.”

The Bianconeri secured a 2-0 victory at the BayArena, allowing him to match the 16-point group record set by Marcello Lippi in 1996-97 and Fabio Capello in 2004-05.

“It’s important to keep a sense of balance. We lost against Lazio, but for long periods it was one of our best games of the season,” Sarri told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was tough tonight against a side that is doing very well in the Bundesliga this season. We held out and as soon as their tempo dropped, we stepped up to take the points.”

With first place already guaranteed, Juve made several changes, giving rare starts to Merih Demiral, Daniele Rugani, Danilo and Adrien Rabiot.

“All four defenders did well. Demiral is the most aggressive, so he was more visible. Rabiot improved throughout the game and that was pleasing.”

Miralem Pjanic and Juan Cuadrado are both suspended for this weekend’s Serie A encounter with Udinese.

“We hope to get Rodrigo Bentancur back soon, we’ll have a look tomorrow. If he is out too, then someone else will take the role. The issue is not who plays, but keeping this level of focus and balance.”

Juve really lit up once Paulo Dybala came off the bench, as he provided both assists to Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain.

“We waited for Bayer Leverkusen’s tempo and aggression to drop, so when Bernardeschi found enormous spaces in that area, we thought it was the right time to use all three together.

“There are times in Serie A when we showed a markedly different sense of determination than in the Champions League, especially in games that directly followed European fixtures. That is something within our minds that we need to work on.”

Juve: Trio back for Udinese

Juventus trio Matthijs de Ligt, Douglas Costa and Rodrigo Bentancur are available to face Udinese after resuming full training.

The Bianconeri face Udinese at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday, and the club reports the aforementioned three trained regularly with the rest of the squad this afternoon.

Bentancur picked up a knock in the 3-1 defeat to Lazio last weekend, whilst Costa has been out injured for much of the season.

On the other hand, Aaron Ramsey is working away from the group, following a personalised training regime.

The Welshman has struggled to stay fit since joining the Old Lady in the summer, starting only five games in all competitions.

Sarri: 'Fight Juve complacency'

sarri conferenza stampa juventus udinese

https://www.football-italia.net/147646/sarri-fight-juve-complacency

Dec 14, 2019

Maurizio Sarri tried to shake Juventus out of Champions League mode and focus back on Serie A to avoid another slip-up with Udinese. “We must fight against it.”

It kicks off on Sunday at 14.00 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“The risks of dropping the intensity levels and dropping points after Champions League games is visible in the statistics, you can’t argue when it happens two or three times,” said Sarri in his press conference.

“We’ve got to find out why it keeps happening and fix it. There are differences playing in Serie A to the Champions League, but it’s not true to say the European opponents are more open. Bayer Leverkusen focus mainly on possession, while Lokomotiv Moscow tend to clam up.

“Perhaps subconsciously our minds can drift to other targets after so many Scudetto titles in a row, but that is something we must absolutely fight against. If we are to be competitive in the Champions League, we need to be competitive in Italy too.

“It is a good sign that there are three Italian teams in the Round of 16 draw on Monday, but my mind won’t be on that until after tomorrow’s game.”

Udinese are currently under caretaker manager Luca Gotti, who has said repeatedly he does not want the job full-time.

The men know each other well, as Gotti worked as part of Sarri’s staff at Chelsea last season.

“Gotti is very talented. I’m told he doesn’t want to take on the responsibility of a coach, which means he is also very intelligent. Udinese can transform any long ball into a scoring opportunity, so we’ve got to be wary of that.”

Aaron Ramsey will at most be on the bench after more injury concerns, while Rodrigo Bentancur and Douglas Costa are back in the squad.

“The sensation is that Cristiano Ronaldo is recovering faster now than he was a while back. We’ll evaluate his fitness levels over the next few days, but he seems to be improving radically.”

Miralem Pjanic and Juan Cuadrado are suspended, so Adrien Rabiot could get another chance after a disappointing performance in Leverkusen midweek.

“He struggled to settle in to our football, but that is normal. He also came off an injury and struggled more in the first half in Germany, but he came out towards the end. He is also quite introverted, which doesn’t help him to settle.

“Emre Can was immensely disappointed (at being left out of the Champions League squad). Tomorrow either Emre Can or Rabiot will certainly play, and both of them may well be on the pitch for a portion of the game.”

Line-ups: Juventus v Udinese

Dec 15, 2019

Juventus finally launch the ultimate trident attack with Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo against Udinese.

It kicks off at 14.00 GMT at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin.

The Bianconeri suffered their first defeat of the season in all competition with last week’s 3-1 loss at Lazio, following on from a 2-2 home draw with Sassuolo.

Those results mean Maurizio Sarri’s men have fallen two points behind new leaders Inter.

Miralem Pjanic and Juan Cuadrado are suspended, with Wojciech Szczesny, Sami Khedira and Giorgio Chiellini injured.

Aaron Ramsey is only fit enough for a spot on the bench, but Sarri has finally bowed to pressure and launches a 4-3-3 formation with Dybala, Higuain and Ronaldo together from the start.

Rodrigo Bentancur has recovered in record time to start in Pjanic’s usual midfield role, flanked by Rabiot and Blaise Matuidi.

Merih Demiral and Mattia De Sciglio are also given starts in defence.

Udinese are still under the guidance of caretaker manager Luca Gotti, who worked with Sarri last season as part of his staff at Chelsea.

Ken Sema, Samir and Mato Jajalo have not made the trip, so Stefano Okaka and Kevin Lasagna are confirmed upfront with Argentina international Rodrigo De Paul.

It is a special game for Juventus midfielder Rolando Mandragora.

This fixture has not ended in a Serie A draw since 1990, followed by 20 home wins and five Udinese victories.

Juventus: Buffon; Danilo, Bonucci, Demiral, De Sciglio; Rabiot, Bentancur, Matuidi; Dybala, Higuain, Ronaldo

Udinese: Musso; De Maio, Troost-Ekong, Nuytinck; Ter-Avest, Fofana, Mandragora, De Paul, Stryger-Larsen; Okaka, Lasagna

Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a brace before Leonardo Bonucci’s header, as the Juventus trident with Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain is tearing Udinese apart.

The Bianconeri needed a boost after one point from their last two Serie A matches, including the first defeat of the season at Lazio. Miralem Pjanic and Juan Cuadrado sat out bans, with Wojciech Szczesny, Sami Khedira and Giorgio Chiellini injured. Aaron Ramsey was only fit for the bench, although Rodrigo Bentancur recovered in record time to start. The big news was Maurizio Sarri bowing to pressure and starting Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo simultaneously.

Udinese missed Ken Sema, Samir and Mato Jajalo, but remained under caretaker manager Luca Gotti, who was on Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea staff last term.

The three stars were relishing the opportunity to play together from the start and broke the deadlock early on. Dybala chested down a long Leonardo Bonucci ball, his attempt to turn was deflected, but turned into an assist for Ronaldo to drill home.

There was almost a second moments later, as Ronaldo’s back-heel flick set up Higuain, his through ball released Dybala, whose shot was deflected on to the side-netting by Sebastien De Maio.

Dybala had the ball in the net again with a delightful lob, but it was all for nothing, as he was booked for controlling the cross with his arm.

The trio combined again, Dybala sparking a dangerous counter by turning Rolando Mandragora inside out, then Ronaldo was cut off, but Higuain forced a low save at the near bottom corner.

It was really one-way traffic in Turin, as Higuain provided an assist with his cheeky no-look through ball for Ronaldo, who burst away from William Troost-Ekong to fire home.

Higuain forced a corner on the stroke of half-time, from which Merih Demiral knocked it down for Bonucci’s header. The Italian didn’t even have to jump, he simply got in front of De Maio and steered it in at the near post.

Juventus proved the trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain can co-exist from the start in a 3-1 win over Udinese.

Higuain forced a corner on the stroke of half-time, from which Merih Demiral knocked it down for Bonucci’s header. The Italian didn’t even have to jump, he simply got in front of De Maio and steered it in at the near post.

Dybala tried again after the restart, his delicate lob kissing the top of the crossbar with Juan Musso beaten.

Gigi Buffon did have a save to make on the hour mark, as Kevin Lasagna’s strike was powerful but central, while Bonucci sprinted back to tackle Lasagna on the counter.

Buffon again had to keep out Lasagna and Seko Fofana, as Juve got tired and stretched out towards the closing stages.

Musso denied Ronaldo a hat-trick, fingertipping his scorcher on to the upright, while Federico Bernardeschi’s finish was too weak to trouble the goalkeeper.

Buffon kept the clean sheet intact with another diving save on Ilija Nestorovski, but he too was beaten deep into stoppages when Ter-Avest’s cross found Ignacio Pussetto relatively unmarked to score from close range.

Juventus: Buffon; Danilo, Bonucci (De Ligt 76), Demiral, De Sciglio; Rabiot, Bentancur, Matuidi; Dybala (Bernardeschi 75), Higuain (Douglas Costa 80), Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo trusts Juventus can continue growing with Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain. “We must play with confidence.”

Today’s 3-1 win over Udinese was the first time Maurizio Sarri has used Ronaldo, Higuain and Dybala together in a trident attack and it worked well, CR7 bagging a brace.

“The most important thing was to win, although we could’ve had more goals,” Ronaldo told Sky Sport Italia.

“I think this is a good way of playing and it’s important we must play with confidence. It’s not about individual performances, but how we work as a collective.”

Juventus temporarily go top of the table awaiting Inter’s visit to Fiorentina this evening.

“We’ll see what happens.”

Borja Valero thought he had given Inter victory against his former club, but Dusan Vlahovic’s stoppage-time stunner saved Fiorentina and Vincenzo Montella.

It means Juventus and Inter are now joint Serie A leaders.

Sarri: 'Juve trio worked well'

Maurizio Sarri was pleased with Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain’s work-rate for Juventus. “We played at a high level for 60 minutes.”

The 3-1 victory over Udinese was sealed by a Ronaldo brace and Leonardo Bonucci, but above all had the three stars starting together.

“It’s the first time that we’ve managed to really attack the game after a Champions League fixture. We played at a high level for a good 60 minutes,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“At this moment, those three are in good shape and we were facing an Udinese side that doesn’t really keep possession, they like to try long balls.

“I therefore thought this was a situation where we could afford to have them. As soon as Udinese starting passing it around more, we struggled, so it is a valuable option for us, but one we cannot use all the time.

“Our forwards also worked hard to help the defence and press the opposition for the first 60 minutes. In attack, they did what I asked, which was quick exchanges and passing.”

Dybala was introduced in the Champions League victory against Bayer Leverkusen midweek and transformed the game with two assists.

“If we are in a game where the opposition will have 50-50 possession, then it becomes more complicated. They were very organised and focused today.

“With Bayer Leverkusen, I saw they were getting tired and struggling to keep up the intensity, so I introduced the trident for that reason. Udinese play in a different way, they are not so focused on passing.”

Sarri was asked if he is ready to be criticised when he next picks Federico Bernardeschi rather than this trio upfront?

“I’ve been criticised after making a substitution that proved decisive for a victory, so frankly I never know what to expect.”

A picture was doing the rounds on the Internet this weekend, showing Sarri during his playing days and a distinct resemblance to Antonio Cabrini.

“I was a much worse player and much less famous than Cabrini, but I was fairly pretty!” he joked.
