Dybala and Ramsey decide Derby d'Italia

Mar 8, 2020

Juventus earned an important 2-0 victory over rivals Inter thanks to Aaron Ramsey and a piece of Paulo Dybala magic, getting them back to a point in front of Lazio in the Scudetto race.

This Derby d’Italia was postponed a week ago amid arguments over who would be allowed in during the Coronavirus outbreak, but the epidemic has since become so serious that all the games are played behind closed doors. In fact, an emergency meeting on Tuesday could see the entire Serie A season suspended.

Antonio Conte returned to the Juventus Stadium for the first time as an opponent, but with no fans to give him a fiery welcome. Christian Eriksen and Diego Godin were dropped, with Stefano Sensi and Victor Moses injured. Maurizio Sarri made some surprising decisions, dropping Miralem Pjanic and Paulo Dybala, moving Juan Cuadrado from the trident attack to right-back so Douglas Costa could start. .....

Juventus found the breakthrough on 55 minutes after a flurry of attacks. Higuain’s shot was charged down from close range, then Matuidi pulled back from the by-line for Ronaldo, who realised Ramsey was better placed and left it. The Welshman’s finish from six yards took a deflection off Stefan de Vrij, making it even more difficult for Handanovic from six yards.

Paulo Dybala and Christian Eriksen were introduced, with La Joya making an immediate impact, scoring a sensational solo effort. He controlled a long ball off the outside of the boot, completed a give-and-go with Ramsey, shimmied past Ashley Young and then prodded in again with the outside of his foot to surprise Handanovic into the far bottom corner. .....

Ronaldo wanted to set a new all-time Serie A record of 12 games on target in a row, but only skimmed the far post with two snapshots in stoppages.

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, De Ligt, Bonucci, Alex Sandro (De Sciglio 77); Ramsey, Bentancur, Matuidi; Douglas Costa (Dybala 60), Higuain (Bernardeschi 80), Cristiano Ronaldo

Inter: Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Candreva (Gagliardini 74), Vecino, Brozovic, Barella (Eriksen 60), Young; R Lukaku (Alexis Sanchez 77), Lautaro Martinez

Conte: 'Inter not at Juventus level'

Mar 8, 2020

Antonio Conte believes it was “a balanced encounter” until the goal, but concedes Inter are still a long way off Juventus. “The difference is that we lost to them twice.”

The Nerazzurri needed a victory to get back into the title race, but have now fallen nine points behind leaders Juve and eight adrift of Lazio – albeit with another game in hand to be played against Sampdoria.

Aaron Ramsey and Paulo Dybala goals seemed to transform the match and Inter never quite recovered.

“It was a very balanced encounter up until the goal and we had started the second half much better than them, but that Ramsey goal changed everything, above all psychologically,” Conte told Sky Sport Italia.

“It boosted their confidence and hit ours, so we were unable to recover from that.”

This result means there is a nine-point gap with Juventus and eight from Lazio, although Inter do have a game in hand.

“The difference between us and Juventus, not counting the game in hand with Sampdoria, is six points. That’s the two defeats at San Siro and here,” added Conte. .....

Sarri: 'More like my Juventus'

Image may contain: 1 person

Mar 8, 2020

Maurizio Sarri explained his tactical choices as Juventus beat Inter 2-0, with Paulo Dybala a “devastating” substitute. “This was far more what I wanted to see from my Juventus.”

This was probably Juve’s best performance of the season, with Aaron Ramsey and substitute Paulo Dybala getting the decisive goals in a game played behind closed doors.

Sarri surprised many with his choices for the starting XI, as he left Dybala and Miralem Pjanic on the bench, starting Douglas Costa and Gonzalo Higuain, moving Juan Cuadrado to right-back.

“We considered it with the staff yesterday, because starting with Cuadrado in the trident meant leaving Dybala and Douglas Costa out. Starting with Douglas allowed us to have both options and Dybala proved a very important card we could whip out at the right time,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“This is an important victory, but there are still 12 games to go, so it’s a long road ahead. This was far more what I wanted to see from my Juventus. .......

Serie A suspension until April 3 'almost certain'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor CONI ITALIA

Mar 9, 2020

The last couple of weeks have been very difficult for Italy, with the Coronavirus spreading rapidly throughout the country, mainly in the northern regions. This has also affected Italian football, with many matches postponed and others played behind closed doors like the Derby d'Italia played yesterday between Juventus and Inter Milan in front of an empty Allianz Stadium.

But now, everything could escalate even more. According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via goal.com), it is almost certain that Serie A will be suspended, with the proposition set to be discussed tomorrow at the extraordinary Federal Council meeting. The round table is expected to issue a decree with a request to end the campaign.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via goal.com), the idea is to stop not only Serie A but also Serie B and C, a measure that Claudio Lotito (Lazio president) could oppose, as he would prefer to go on together with other presidents. The topic will also be discussed in a conference call with the members of the TV rights commission and at the Lega assembly on Thursday. ........

PM: Serie A suspended during Coronavirus

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor allianz stadium vuoto

Mar 9, 2020

The Prime Minister of Italy announced that all sporting competition – including Serie A – will be suspended during the Coronavirus crisis.

The decision comes after another significant spike in cases, as there are now 7,985 people suffering from Coronavirus in the country, an increase of 1,598 from yesterday.

There have also been another 97 deaths over the last 24 hours, taking the total casualty toll to 463, while another 733 are in intensive care.

Including those who have recovered, the total positive tests for Coronavirus in Italy has reached 9,172.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced in an emergency press conference this evening that the ‘red zone’ limitations that so far had been largely around Lombardy and northern regions until April 3 would now apply to all of Italy. ......

FIGC: 'Options to assign Scudetto'

Ronaldo-1912-Laz-Lulic-epa_0.jpg

Mar 10, 2020

A FIGC statement confirms they will try to postpone the end of Serie A to May 31 amid the Coronavirus outbreak, but could have play-offs for the Scudetto and relegation too.

Today’s summit between the Italian Football Federation, CONI, Government and various representatives of the league competitions was called to discuss how to proceed after a shutdown on sporting events until April 3.

There is no time to complete all the postponed Serie A matches by the planned final day of May 24, not to mention the Coppa Italia.

A statement from FIGC President Gabriele Gravina confirmed the previous suggestions, which are that the end of Serie A could be pushed back to May 31, trying to use all available dates in that period.

It would mean finishing right before Euro 2020, which is due to start with Italy’s game against Turkey in Rome on June 12.

As the Serie A table currently stands after 26 rounds, Juventus are top on 63 points, followed by Lazio on 62, while Inter still have a game in hand and are on 54.

“If the COVID-19 emergency should not allow for the conclusion of the league competitions, President Gravina put forward some proposals that will be discussed in another meeting on March 23.

Juve have 121 in self-isolation

Coronavirus, la Juve:

Mar 12, 2020

Juventus confirm 121 people within the club have gone into self-isolation, including players, directors and staff, after Daniele Rugani tested positive for Coronavirus.

The defender was the first Serie A player to test positive for the virus, soon joined by Sampdoria forward Manolo Gabbiadini.

Those who came into close contact with Rugani over the last few days have therefore gone into self-isolation, including President Andrea Agnelli. ....

Many of them will be staying at the J-Hotel, which is next to the training centre.

President Agnelli announced he too was in self-isolation since last night as he launched a fund-raising campaign for local hospitals in Piedmont.

Champions League, Europa League suspended

uefa stop champions europa league

Mar 13, 2020

UEFA have announced that the Champions League and Europa League have been suspended due to the Coronavirus pandemic, without waiting for Tuesday’s summit.

The decision had become inevitable after the rapid spread of the illness saw practically all domestic tournaments shut down.

“In the light of developments due to the spread of COVID-19 in Europe and related decisions made by different governments, all UEFA club competitions matches scheduled next week are postponed,” read a statement.

“This includes the remaining UEFA Champions League, Round of 16 second leg matches scheduled on 17 and 18 March 2020; all UEFA Europa League, Round of 16 second leg matches scheduled on 19 March 2020; all UEFA Youth League, quarter-final matches scheduled on 17 and 18 March 2020.

“Further decisions on when these matches take place will be communicated in due course.

Euro 2020 moved to December?

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor euro 2020

Mar 17, 2020

UEFA are considering a shorter postponement of Euro 2020 to December rather than next summer, according to The Telegraph newspaper.

A summit on Tuesday will be the opportunity for 55 member states, representatives of Players’ Associations and others to have their say on how to deal with the on-going Coronavirus crisis.

It’s practically impossible for domestic leagues to conclude in time for the tournament to kick off as planned on June 12 in Rome.

The most logical step would be to postpone Euro 2020 for a year, making it essentially Euro 2021, played next summer. .......

Euro 2020 Championship postponed to 2021 over coronavirus crisis

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor euro 2020 coronavirus

Mar 17, 2020

The Euro 2020 soccer Championship, trumpeted as a continent-wide feast of football from Dublin to Baku to mark UEFA’s 60th anniversary, was postponed for a year on Tuesday as the coronavirus pandemic claimed its biggest sporting casualty yet.

The fate of the 24-nation, month-long showpiece due to start in June had hung in the balance ever since Europe’s domestic leagues shut down in the wake of the sweeping health crisis, which has killed around 7,000 people worldwide.

UEFA relayed the news after an emergency video conference with all 55 of its affiliated national federations and representatives from clubs and leagues.

“It was important that, as the governing body of European football, UEFA led the process and made the biggest sacrifice,” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement confirming what the Norwegian and Swedish FAs had leaked earlier.

“We are at the helm of a sport that vast numbers of people live and breathe that has been laid low by this invisible and fast-moving opponent. At times like these, that the football community needs to show responsibility, unity, solidarity.”

Even as the video conference was ongoing, Norway’s FA broke ranks to confirm via Twitter that the tournament had been postponed for the first time in its history. Swedish FA chairman Karl-Erik Nilsson also sent a message to Reuters during the video conference. “Postponed until 11/6- 11/7 2021,” he said.

UEFA confirmed those dates shortly after. ......

Pressure on Lotito to stop training

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor agnelli e lotito

Mar 18, 2020

Pressure is growing on Claudio Lotito, who owns both Lazio and Serie B side Salernitana, after complaints he is trying to force players into training during the coronavirus pandemic.

The AIC (Players’ Association) released a statement this week warning they would take strong action if clubs tried to call players into training sessions or even to have their temperature checked rather than doing it themselves at home.

Even though Serie A and B are shut down until at least April 3, Salernitana held a training session this morning, going against the Government guidelines.

There have been multiple reports that Lotito and Juventus President Andrea Agnelli had a heated discussion during this week’s Serie A conference call to discuss suspending the league.

Lotito was determined to keep Lazio going into training, with Agnelli reportedly accusing him of “caring more about this than the health of your players.” ....

Juventus 'let stars leave' after quarantine

pjanic khedira juventus fuga torino

Mar 19, 2020

Juventus assure Gonzalo Higuain, Miralem Pjanic and Sami Khedira have all been given permission to leave quarantine after testing negative for coronavirus.

La Repubblica’s online edition had claimed this afternoon that Higuain was stopped at the Caselle Airport in Turin trying to board a private jet on his way to Argentina, breaking the self-isolation rules.

La Gazzetta dello Sport then added that teammate Rodrigo Bentancur was with him, accompanied by their respective families.

However, Juventus have assured multiple sources – including La Gazzetta dello Sport – that this was a misunderstanding.

Higuain, Pjanic and Khedira have all been in isolation since Daniele Rugani became the first Serie A player to test positive for coronavirus on March 11.

A week has passed and they tested negative, so have been allowed to leave the country in order to join their families. ......

UEFA postpones club Finals

Ronaldo

Mar 23, 2020

UEFA has officially postponed the Champions League and Europa League Finals as the 2020 Olympic Games look set to be held next year.

In a statement, UEFA also confirmed the Women’s Champions League Final would be put off until further notice.

Europe’s three major club Finals were scheduled to take place in May, but the outbreak of coronavirus on the continent has forced the governing body’s hand.

Italy is the country with the world’s most deaths from COVID-19 (6,077), whereas Spain rank third, France fifth and the UK seventh.

Meanwhile, International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound has told USA Today that the Tokyo Olympics will be postponed until 2021. .....

Godin: 'Players most exposed'

Juventus-Inter, le probabili formazioni: Ronaldo ci sarà, Eriksen ...

Mar 28, 2020

Inter’s Diego Godin has hit out at Italian football authorities for their handling of the coronavirus pandemic. “We were exposed until the last moment.”

Serie A did not officially stop until March 9, when Italy went into full lockdown, with games continuing to be played behind closed doors before then.

Among those to be played behind closed doors was Inter’s 2-1 defeat to Juventus, which Godin claims possibly helped the spread of COVID-19.

“We were exposed until the last moment,” the defender, who is isolating in his native Uruguay, told ESPN.

“They opted to keep going to see if we could continue playing, until the situation became untenable and the health system collapsed.

“We continued to play for several weeks, we continued training and played behind closed doors until Rugani’s positive test: only at that point did the campaign stop. ......

Juve squad agrees to pay cut

Mar 28, 2020

Juventus players have agreed to take a collective pay cut, saving the club around €90m.

As per an official statement, Juve’s squad will receive no wages in March, April, May and June of this year, with a view to “conditional increases” if the season ends up resuming.

“Juventus Football Club S.p.A. announces that, due to the current global health emergency is preventing the performance of the sporting activity, it has reached an understanding with the players and the coach of the First Team regarding their compensation for the residual portion of the current sport season.

“The understanding provides for the reduction of the compensation for an amount equal to the monthly payments of March, April, May and June 2020. In the coming weeks, personal agreements with the players and the coach will be finalised, as required by the current regulations.

“The economic and financial effects of the understanding reached are positive for about €90m for the 2019/2020 financial year. .....

Ogbonna: 'England laughed at Italy'

LIVEBLOG | Koning geeft vanavond toespraak, streep door Ronde van ...

Mar 28, 2020

West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna has talked about life in quarantine in the UK and how England “laughed” at Italy, “underestimating a global issue.”

Ogbonna left Juventus and signed for the Irons in July 2015, going on to play 152 games since his €15m move to the Premier League.

He revealed his wife was expecting their second child, it was difficult to keep in shape living in an apartment in the English capital and that the country reacted late to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Initially there was scepticism, the emergency was handled superficially,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.

“I think there was also an intention to try to protect the country economically after Brexit.

“They underestimated a very serious, global issue. Initially they laughed at us [Italy], they thought we were exaggerating and exasperating the matter.

“I live in London, but I was immediately worried about us and my family in Italy. I have to tell you the truth, at least in London there was concern. Empty supermarkets, fewer people around. But London is not England.” .......

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina has hailed Juventus as “an example for the whole system” after their staff accepted pay cuts.

Juve’s first-team squad and coach Maurizio Sarri will not take a wage until June, as part of measure to help the club remain financially stable for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The agreement reached by Juventus is an example for the whole system,” Gravina told ANSA.

“I thank Giorgio Chiellini, his teammates and Maurizio Sarri because, in wake of the collaboration that the FIGC hopes to have in days, they placed general interests at the heart of their conversations with the club. ......

Former Juventus trainer and Italy CT Marcello Lippi claims Serie A "should be completed” and suggests broadcasting the matches on TV but “played behind closed doors”.

The World Cup winner has revealed that he would like to see the championship concluded on the pitch, even if it will affect next season.

“I’m of the opinion that the championship should be completed, all of them,” he told Radio Sportiva. “If they end in May, August or September remains to be seen.

“It will mean that the next season will be more condensed.”

Cancelling Serie A season due to coronavirus would be a disaster & we must play on to respect the dead - Lazio sporting director Tare

The Albanian has warned football authorities against calling off the 2019-20 campaign, insisting such a scenario would lead to a "collapse"

Mar 31, 2020

If the current Serie A season is cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak it would be a "disaster", according to Lazio sporting director Igli Tare.

The Italian top-flight has been suspended indefinitely due to the Covid-19 crisis, with players and staff from all clubs across the league currently in self-isolation in accordance with new government rules.

The pandemic has hit Italy harder than any other country in the world, with 101,739 cases confirmed and 11,591 deaths recorded to date.

Despite the fact there are still 13 rounds of Serie A fixtures to be completed, it has been suggested that the campaign could be voided completely if the coronavirus crisis rages on over the next few weeks.

However, Tare says it is still far too far early to make a final decision, with it his belief that the competition must reach its natural conclusion "out of respect for the dead".

"The season must be completed. The championship must go on out of respect for the dead and all the fans," the Lazio chief told Sport 1.

"The time is not yet ripe to decide on the cancellation. The number of infected people is decreasing and interrupting the season would be unfair."

Tare added on the possible financial implications of ending the season prematurely: "For Italian football, stopping here would be a disaster. .....

Someone has started a petition asking for the 2019-20 Serie A title to be handed to Atalanta, as the city of Bergamo has been hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

There are now 15,362 deaths registered in Italy from the virus, with 8,656 of them being in the Lombardy region.

Bergamo is a small town of around 120,000 people, so it is particularly shocking to see over 4,500 die there over the last month.

The nation was shocked by scenes of a military convoy carrying coffins to other cities because their crematorium was unable to keep up with the rising number of fatalities.
