Juventus 4-1 Udinese: Ronaldo inspires Bianconeri

Immagine

Jan 3, 2020

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two, created the other for Federico Chiesa, then Paulo Dybala found the net, but Udinese were unlucky to see a goal disallowed and hit the Juventus crossbar twice.

Cristiano Ronaldo curled wide and Aaron Ramsey missed a sitter when set up by Federico Chiesa, firing it straight at Juan Musso from point-blank range.

Moments later, Rodrigo De Paul sprinted away from Leonardo Bonucci, combined with Kevin Lasagna and fired in to complete the move. However, it was disallowed.

Instead, Juventus took the lead when De Paul was caught napping by Ramsey on a throw-in and Ronaldo pounced, sprinting into the box to bend it around Musso into the far bottom corner with his right boot.

Moments later, Ramsey almost returned the favour, as he was caught in possession by Walace, but that shot was charged down and Lasagna’s follow-up straight at Wojciech Szczesny.

The second half started with a bang, as Chiesa ran onto a Ronaldo pass, his first touch allowing him to flick it beyond Jens Stryger-Larsen and steer in from a tricky angle.

Ramsey had the ball in the net soon after when he saw the first attempt blocked by Musso and got back onto his feet to turn in the rebound, but it was disallowed using VAR because of a handling offence.

Udinese threatened to get back into it, but Stryger-Larsen’s header looped over Szczesny to bounce off the crossbar.

However, Samir gave the ball away in midfield and when Bentancur threaded it through for Ronaldo, the outcome was a foregone conclusion.

The Friulani were very unlucky, as they hit the crossbar again with Marvin Zeegelaar, who had shaken off Bonucci from a Fernando Forestieri assist only to strike the woodwork from close range.

They did finally get a consolation goal when Molina rolled across from the right, Szczesny did what he could on Nestorovski, but could do little on the Zeegelaar follow-up.

It was Paulo Dybala who broke his goal drought with the last kick of the game. Danilo’s intelligent through ball allowed him to run between centre-backs and he kept his cool to lift the finish over on-rushing Musso. It was his first Serie A goal in Turin for six months.

Pirlo: 'Not the best Juventus'

Juventus wil versterking: Pirlo lonkt naar Giroud - Voetbal International

Jan 3, 2020

Andrea Pirlo admits this was ‘not the best Juventus’ of the season, but a 4-1 win over Udinese allowed them to shake off the Fiorentina debacle and prepare for Milan.

The Bianconeri started 2021 on the right foot with a 4-1 victory over Udinese, as Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a brace, set up another for Federico Chiesa, before Paulo Dybala netted late on.

It wasn’t an entirely perfect performance, though, as Udinese had an early goal controversially disallowed and hit the woodwork twice before Marvin Zeegelaar’s strike.

“It wasn’t the best Juventus, as we were coming off a bad defeat to Fiorentina, so started quite timid and nervous, especially when their forwards ran towards us. We gained more confidence as it went on,” Pirlo told DAZN.

“I was not satisfied with the initial approach to the game, as we were still feeling the fear of our last defeat to Fiorentina. The timing of the movements weren’t right, especially on the wings.

“We knew that Udinese would try to sit back, counter and wait for our mistakes, but we did well with the preventative marking to ensure they couldn’t do that.”

There was a hug of almost relief between Pirlo and Dybala after the final whistle.

“We need Dybala, he needs us. He worked very well during the week in training, we could tell during the match that he was in better physical condition and we kept him on to the end because we hoped he would score that goal.”

Chiesa was also on target and became stronger as the game went on this evening.

“When we defend, he needs to stay more central. With Paulo there, he can attack with more width and create the space for the other midfielders to push up as well.”

Aaron Ramsey had the ball in the net, but it was disallowed for a handling offence.

“When he’s in good shape, Aaron is a very important player. He’s intelligent, he knows which positions to find on the pitch. Unfortunately, he had so many problems in recent years that he needs a lot of rest between games.

“We’ll see what the situation is with Alvaro Morata and if he can play on Wednesday, but I doubt it.” ............

Juventus delay Milan trip after COVID cases

Juventus-Milan, probable lineups | AC Milan News

Jan 5, 2020

Juventus will delay their journey to Milan until tomorrow morning after another round of COVID swabs after Alex Sandro and Juan Cuadrado tested positive.

The game is due to kick off on Wednesday at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

Alex Sandro tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, then it was announced today that Cuadrado had also been diagnosed with Coronavirus.

There are growing concerns this could turn into a hotspot with the virus spreading through the squad, not least because Paulo Dybala had a fever yesterday.

Dybala had COVID for several weeks last year and has still not quite got back to 100 per cent. ............

Health authority 'could block Juventus travel'

AC Milan vs Juventus Odds & Pick - Italian Serie A Betting Tips for July 07

Jan 5, 2020

The Turin local health authority confirm they are ready to step in and block Juventus travel for the Milan game ‘if more COVID cases were to appear.’

The match is due to kick off at San Siro on Wednesday at 19.45 GMT.

Alex Sandro tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, followed by teammate Juan Cuadrado today.

Because of the situation, Juve have decided to remain in their ‘bubble’ at the J Hotel tonight, only travelling tomorrow morning after the results of the latest swabs.

“Juventus have informed us that two of their players tested positive,” said Doctor Roberto Testi, director of the Department of Prevention at the Turin ASL (local health authority) to the Corriere di Torino.

“At this moment, we do not have the evidence required to say there is a hotspot within the squad, because we know how the two players were infected and why the others are negative.

“If there should be more positive tests today and the evidence of an uncontrolled breakout within the squad, that would become a problem of safety for the other players.

“Clearly, at that point, the ASL would be forced to intervene, isolating everyone and blocking Juve’s departure towards Milan.” ............

Pirlo: Juventus vs. Milan important but not decisive

Conferenza stampa Pirlo: «Milan non decisivo, a San Siro senza paura»

Jan 5, 2020

Juventus will travel tomorrow — if the Turin ASL permits, that is — to take on AC Milan who sit pretty on the top of the Serie A table ten points ahead of the Bianconeri, though they have played one more game too.

Coach Andrea Pirlo, who has donned the colors of both sides, said today that the title race is still open, and the result of this game would not decide who won the Scudetto with so many games left go.

“We are working for that, we started 2021 with a win and a positive attitude. We take one game at a time, then we will evaluate the table in a couple of months

“It’s certainly an important match, but not a decisive one. Playing Milan-Juventus is always fascinating.

“It was as a player and it will be as a coach. We will play the game to do our best, it will be important but not decisive.”

How does he feel playing against a team that he was at for such a long time?

“Milan are a team where I have played a lot and won a lot. For me it’s an important game, even if the club has changed a lot, seeing that there’s only [Paolo] Maldini left who I know.

“It will still be wonderful, also because it’s the first time I have faced them as a coach.” ............

Line-ups: Milan v Juventus

Both Milan and Juventus are forced to make radical changes due to injuries, bans and COVID, as Davide Calabria moves into midfield against Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo.

This is a huge match between the current Serie A leaders and the side that won the last nine Scudetto titles.

Unfortunately, it won’t be a full-strength squad for either coach, as they have an extraordinary number of problems, some of them arising over the last 24 hours.

Juventus knew they were in trouble with Alvaro Morata injured, Alex Sandro and Juan Cuadrado testing positive for COVID-19.

Dybala also had a fever over the last couple of days, but he is fit to start upfront, with Gianluca Frabotta coming in to the versatile wide role.

Milan knew they would have to do without suspended Sandro Tonali and long-term injury absentees Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ismael Bennacer, Alexis Saelemaekers and Matteo Gabbia.

However, this morning, it was confirmed Ante Rebic and Rade Krunic had both tested positive for COVID-19. ............

HT 1-1: Calabria replies to Chiesa

Immagine

Jan 6, 2020

Davide Calabria cancelled out the thumping Federico Chiesa opener, as Milan and Juventus are 1-1 at the break in a scintillating game of football.

This was a huge showdown and the Rossoneri knew they’d be top anyway, as Inter lost 2-1 at Sampdoria this afternoon, whereas Juve were 10 points adrift of the leaders with a game in hand.

Both sides were forced to reshuffle, as Juan Cuadrado, Alex Sandro, Ante Rebic and Rade Krunic tested positive for COVID-19 over the last 24 hours. Sandro Tonali was also suspended, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ismael Bennacer, Matteo Gabbia, Alexis Saelemaekers and Alvaro Morata injured. Davide Calabria therefore had to improvise as a defensive midfielder.

It was only a warning, as moments later Paulo Dybala’s back-heel flick sent Chiesa through with a quick one-two and his angled drive nestled into the far bottom corner from 10 yards.

Chiesa was tearing Theo Hernandez to shreds and his cross only just went past Cristiano Ronaldo, then he stung Donnarumma’s gloves from the edge of the box.

Milan got their equaliser just before half-time. Calhanoglu tackled Adrien Rabiot in midfield to spark the counter, Leao went down the left and pulled it back across for Calabria, who could not have hit a better finish with the inside of the right boot into the top corner from the edge of the area. Juve felt there was a foul on Rabiot in the build-up, but VAR did not intervene.

Milan 1-3 Juventus: Old Lady ends Rossoneri record

Immagine

Jan 6, 2020

Milan saw their 27-round Serie A unbeaten run come to an end, as Federico Chiesa inspired the 3-1 Juventus victory at San Siro.

Federico Chiesa had a huge chance on 15 minutes when his chest and volley smacked against the frame of the goal with Gianluigi Donnarumma beaten.

It was only a warning, as moments later Paulo Dybala’s back-heel flick sent Chiesa through with a quick one-two and his angled drive nestled into the far bottom corner from 10 yards.

Ramsey scuffed another potentially good chance wide at the back post, but Chiesa was having a dream evening at San Siro and completed his brace.

He again cut inside from the right past Theo Hernandez and curled left-footed into the far bottom corner from the edge of the area. Chiesa felt cramp after that goal and asked to come off.

Juve’s substitutions made the difference, as Kulusevski got past Alessio Romagnoli down the right and laid it off for McKennie to fire in from six yards.

Pirlo explains Juventus key to beat Milan

221808523-601a5ede-220a-4579-b939-ee20c9

Jan 6, 2020

Andrea Pirlo explains why Juventus put Federico Chiesa up against Theo Hernandez and showed ‘the spirit of a team that wants to be in control’ against Milan.

The Bianconeri were missing Alex Sandro, Juan Cuadrado and Alvaro Morata, but Federico Chiesa stepped up with a brace before Weston McKennie scored off the bench for 3-1.

Davide Calabria had scored the temporary equaliser, but strength in depth made the difference, especially with the Rossoneri missing so many players.

“It was important for us, we weren’t interested in the results of the teams above us, as we were concentrated on our own progress. We’ll see in a few months where we are,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“The important thing was this spirit of a team that wants to be in control, especially against the Serie A leaders on their own turf.”

The tactical key was perhaps putting Chiesa up against Theo Hernandez.

“The idea was to keep him under pressure and not allow him to keep pushing forward as freely as he usually does, especially when he had to deal with a player who was also good in one-on-one situations.

“We signed him so he could take men on in the final third, his position might change, but his role does not.” .............

Juve felt there was a foul on Rabiot by Hakan Calhanoglu at the start of the move that led to Davide Calabria’s equaliser.

“It was a foul and the referee should’ve blown the whistle. After that decision was made, Danilo should’ve been more aggressive, but also the whole team wasn’t set out well. In any case, it all started from a foul.” .............

Pirlo: 'Juve mental strength with Sassuolo'

Conferenza Pirlo pre Juve-Sassuolo: 'Demiral titolare. E in panchina...' - La Gazzetta dello Sport

Jan 9, 2020

Andrea Pirlo outlines the Sassuolo dangers for his Juventus side, urges more ‘mental strength’ and insists Milan ‘remain the team to beat’ in Serie A.

It kicks off on Sunday at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“I expect a difficult game, as Sassuolo are a very good team who have been playing together for several years now,” said Pirlo in his press conference.

“They have an excellent coach in Roberto De Zerbi, we must above all be concentrated when they have the ball, because they’re very good at escaping the opposition press.”

Before he took the Juve job, Pirlo had named De Zerbi as one of the coaches he was studying, along with Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.

“We’ve always had some great conversations about football, but there are many young coaches out there who are doing well.”

The Bianconeri are fresh from a 3-1 win away to Milan, which put them right back in the thick of the Scudetto race and as potential favourites.

“Whoever is top remains the team to beat,” insisted the coach. “We’ve won for nine years in a row and clearly there is pressure on us, but Milan are the team to beat because they are the leaders.

“It was an important victory, but if we don’t win tomorrow, then it will all have been for nothing. If we don’t get a result here, then what we did at San Siro will fall into the background. .............

Juventus are forced to revamp their defence again with Merih Demiral, while Sassuolo must do without Domenico Berardi.

The Bianconeri have a huge opportunity to climb up into fourth place, one point behind Roma with a game in hand.

Their enthusiasm is sky high after beating leaders Milan 3-1 at San Siro on Wednesday evening, despite missing Alex Sandro and Juan Cuadrado with COVID-19.

Matthijs de Ligt also tested positive yesterday, so the options in defence are very limited and Merih Demiral gets a rare start with Gianluca Frabotta.

Federico Chiesa and Weston McKennie take the wings, with Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo upfront, as Alvaro Morata is still only fit for the bench. .............

Juventus: Szczesny; Danilo, Bonucci, Demiral, Frabotta; Chiesa, Bentancur, Arthur, McKennie; Dybala, Ronaldo

Juventus bench: Buffon, Pinsoglio, Chiellini, Di Pardo, Dragusin, Ramsey, Rabiot, Bernardeschi, Portanova, Fagioli, Kulusevski, Morata.

Sassuolo: Consigli; Muldur, Chiriches, Ferrari, Kyriakopoulos; Obiang, Locatelli; Defrel, Djuricic, Traore; Caputo

Sassuolo bench: Pegolo, Marlon, Magnanelli, Ayhan, Rogerio, Boga, Lopez, Peluso, Raspadori, Toljan, Oddei, Schiappacasse

It has been a chaotic first half in Turin, as Juventus lost Paulo Dybala and Weston McKennie to injury, while Pedro Obiang saw red for Sassuolo.

A towering Cristiano Ronaldo header landed on the roof of the net, then Gianluca Frabotta’s strike was deflected just over after an inspired Weston McKennie back-heel flick.

McKennie went off with a minor injury and Vlad Chiriches made a decisive block on Ronaldo, but as the game became increasingly frustrating for Juve, they also lost Dybala to a slight knee sprain.

The situation got even worse, as Chiesa was practically in tears after a very late Pedro Obiang tackle. VAR showed why, as Obiang caught him studs-up on the ankle and was shown a straight red card. .............

Juventus 3-1 Sassuolo: Bianconeri knock down Sassuolo

Juventus were made to work very hard, as Danilo’s rocket and Aaron Ramsey eventually broke 10-man Sassuolo, despite Gregoire Defrel’s goal, before a last-gasp Cristiano Ronaldo strike.

After the restart, Danilo broke the deadlock with an absolute missile of a strike. The poor clearance came to around 20 metres out and the Brazilian unleashed an unstoppable effort into the far bottom corner. Funnily enough, his last Serie A goal was also against Sassuolo.

However, the Bianconeri seemed to almost assume the job was done and were caught out by the 10 men of Sassuolo. It was a well-worked team passing move in the Neroverdi mould, Hamed Junior Traore’s through ball finding Gregoire Defrel, who took a touch to knock it between the centre-backs and at full stretch steered it past Wojciech Szczesny.

Sassuolo refused to sit back and defend the point, so teenage debutant Brian Oddei had a shot charged down on the counter.

This inevitably made it a very open game and Juventus took their chance, as Frabotta got down the left and rolled a ball across the six-yard box, two Sassuolo players didn’t cut it out, but Ramsey tapped in at full stretch.

Sassuolo continued to push to the end, but Juve added a third with the last kick of the game. It was very route one, as Danilo's long ball from inside his own penalty area sent Ronaldo running for an angled drive. ...........

Coppa Italia: Juve need extra time to beat Genoa

Immagine

Jan 13, 2020

Juventus needed extra time in the Coppa Italia Round of 16, as Dejan Kulusevski lit up the first half, Genoa fought back from 2-0 down and Hamza Rafia sealed the 3-2 win.

The winners will go on to meet Sassuolo or SPAL in the quarter-final.

It took 90 seconds to break the deadlock, as Chiellini threaded through for Dejan Kulusevski to fire in relatively undisturbed from 12 yards.

Mattia Bani needed a last-ditch tackle on Kulusevski, who had dribbled into the box, but the Sweden international created the second goal for Morata with a first-time flick to send the Spaniard running.

However, Genoa scored with their first real chance of the game, a cross whipped in from the right for the diving header of Lennart Czyborra.

Morata sprinted away on the counter, but then saw his shot deflected rather than make the pass. Juve started to lose intensity as the game wore on and Genoa completed the comeback for 2-2 with a ferocious Filippo Melegoni screamer into the top corner from outside the box.

Juve finally got back in front with substitute Hamza Rafia’s first goal for the club. Ronaldo sent Morata down the left, his low cross found Rafia for the first scuffed finish, but it bobbled kindly on the rebound for him to fire in from six yards.

Genoa did not give in and thought they’d made it 3-3 on the corner with Ivan Radovanovic’s header, but Arthur made a decisive goal-line clearance.

Kulusevski also had the chance to seal it when intercepting a poor Rovella pass, but Paleari made an extraordinary save to fingertip over the bar. ...............

Pirlo: 'Juve poor game management'

Rafia manda la Juve ai quarti di Coppa Italia - Juventus

Jan 13, 2020

Andrea Pirlo concedes Juventus ‘made life difficult for ourselves’ in the 3-2 Coppa Italia win over Genoa, which went to extra time.

The Bianconeri were in total control and leading 2-0, but Genoa fought back to 2-2, so Hamza Rafia got the winner on his debut.

“We made life complicated for ourselves, as we had played the first half really well, then got distracted and it became tougher,” Pirlo told RAI Sport.

“It’s a pity, as we had done what we needed to and should’ve controlled the situation better. The Coppa Italia is a target, so it was important to win and go through to the next round.”

Dejan Kulusevski lit up the first half, scoring a goal and assisting for Alvaro Morata, but fell away badly after the break.

“He is still very young and only really had one Serie A season, so it’s a big step up to Juventus. He has some peaks and troughs, so needs to be more consistent during the 90 minutes, more determined in front of goal and realise every single ball at Juventus is precious.” ...........

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo reportedly has both Federico Chiesa and Weston McKennie available for the big game against Inter.

Il Corriere dello Sport reports Paulo Dybala and Matthijs de Ligt are certainly out against the Nerazzurri, but Pirlo hopes to get good news regarding Alex Sandro and Juan Cuadrado.

The two latter tested positive for coronavirus but the Old Lady hope to have them back in contention for the match against the Beneamata.

The two will undergo the necessary swabs and medical tests to see if they can exit the isolation and re-join the group. ...........

Pirlo inspired by Conte at Juve

Juventus: Juventus shouldn't need a slap to wake up, says coach Andrea Pirlo | Football News - Times of India

Jan 16, 2020

Andrea Pirlo reveals Antonio Conte ‘made me want to become a coach’ during their time at Juventus and they’ll ‘battle to the end’ with Inter for the Scudetto.

It kicks off on Sunday at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“I expect to see an aggressive Inter that wants to set the tempo for the game, but we are Juventus, so we want to go to San Siro with our style of football, free from pressure,” said Pirlo in his press conference.

“There must be no fear, no timidity, even in such an important match. We must free our minds. We are Juventus and must be accustomed to people putting pressure on us.

“The victory would give us a real boost that goes beyond the three points. We might have different philosophies at this moment, but both teams will fight to the end for the title.”

Conte was the coach who started the nine-year Scudetto winning streak, with Pirlo in his midfield, but they now face off as opposing tacticians.

“Conte and I have two very different personalities, which is probably why we have always got along really well. We did speak before the season began, there remains great respect and affection between us.

“He made Juventus history and I learned a lot from him, so will always be grateful. Conte is the first man who made me want to become a coach. He is a great person as well as a great coach, but tomorrow we will be opponents on the touchline.” ...........

Probable line-ups: Inter v Juventus

Inter-Juve, probabili formazioni e dove vederla in tv - Sport - Calcio - quotidiano.net

Jan 16, 2020

Federico Chiesa, Alvaro Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo are expected to start for Juventus against Inter’s Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez and Arturo Vidal.

........... Juventus are still missing Matthijs de Ligt, Alex Sandro and Juan Cuadrado due to COVID-19, with Paulo Dybala injured for at least another two weeks with a knee ligament problem.

A choice needs to be made in defence between Giorgio Chiellini and Merih Demiral, while Weston McKennie probably won’t be risked from the start, giving Adrien Rabiot the nod.

Chiesa and Ramsey have shaken off knocks and should be in the starting XI with Rodrigo Bentancur and Gianluca Frabotta.

There are no other alternatives upfront, it’s got to be Morata and Ronaldo, sending Dejan Kulusevski to the bench after his impressive display in the Coppa Italia against Genoa midweek.

Probable line-ups

Inter (3-5-2): Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Hakimi, Barella, Brozovic, Vidal, Young; Lautaro Martinez, R Lukaku

Juventus (4-4-2): Szczesny; Danilo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Frabotta; Chiesa, Bentancur, Rabiot, Ramsey; Morata, Ronaldo

It’s a fascinating Derby d’Italia for the Scudetto, with Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez against Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata.

With Roma losing to Lazio, this has become a head-to-head for second place and the chance to chase down leaders Milan.

Andrea Pirlo faces his former coach for the first time, as Antonio Conte tries to end the nine-year winning streak that he started in Turin.

It’ll require a sea change in statistics, because Conte has lost all three Serie A matches against Juve as a coach. ...........

Juve are still without Matthijs de Ligt, Alex Sandro and Juan Cuadrado, who all tested positive for COVID-19.

Paulo Dybala is also out with a knee ligament injury, so Morata is the inevitable partner for Capocannoniere Cristiano Ronaldo.

Federico Chiesa is back in action after a knock, as is Aaron Ramsey, with Gianluca Frabotta given a chance.

Weston McKennie is only fit enough for the bench, but Giorgio Chiellini is back in the starting XI.

Both teams were forced to play 120 minutes in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday, as Inter beat Fiorentina 2-1 in extra time, while Juve eventually saw off Genoa 3-2.

Inter: Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Hakimi, Barella, Brozovic, Vidal, Young; R Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez

Juventus: Szczesny; Danilo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Frabotta; Chiesa, Rabiot, Bentancur, Ramsey; Morata, Ronaldo

HT 1-0: Vidal strikes back at Juventus

Immagine

Jan 17, 2020

Arturo Vidal has given Inter the half-time lead against his former teammates, but Lautaro Martinez wasted several chances to further punish Juventus.

There were fireworks let off outside the stadium by the Curva Nord, Inter ultras, creating quite a lot of smoke in the arena for the first few minutes.

Juve had the first chance, Adrien Rabiot stinging Samir Handanovic’s gloves, but Federico Chiesa was offside when he set up Cristiano Ronaldo to score on the rebound.

However, Inter took the lead when Nicolò Barella’s cross with his left foot sailed over Lautaro Martinez for a Vidal header, getting in front of Danilo from six yards. It was the Chilean’s first Serie A goal for the Nerazzurri and he did it against his former club.

Inter 2-0 Juventus: Conte takes Derby d'Italia

Inter comfortably out-played Juventus in the Derby d’Italia, as Nicolò Barella assisted ex-Bianconeri star Arturo Vidal and then scored the second himself.

This wasn’t just a Derby d’Italia, but also a battle to see who would be the main Scudetto contenders to chase down leaders Milan. The Nerazzurri had practically a full squad to choose from, with ex-Juve midfielder Arturo Vidal, but Matthijs de Ligt, Alex Sandro and Juan Cuadrado had COVID-19 with Paulo Dybala injured. Both teams had to play extra time in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday.

Inter doubled their lead after the restart with a fantastic searching pass from deep by Alessandro Bastoni, as Barella sealed his MOTM status with a great first touch, sprinting away from defenders to blast into the roof of the net.

Andrea Pirlo made a triple substitution and Weston McKennie immediately made an impact with a towering header smothered by Handanovic, but Alvaro Morata’s similar attempt was over the bar.

Lautaro Martinez ran half the length of the field only to curl wide again and Rodrigo Bentancur’s effort was charged down, but Juve seemed to be completely lacking ideas and enthusiasm.

They only genuinely tested Samir Handanovic with a Federico Chiesa snapshot on 87 minutes, readjusting to palm it away with one hand.

Inter: Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Hakimi, Barella, Brozovic, Vidal (Gagliardini 77), Young (Darmian 72); R Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez (Alexis Sanchez 86)

Juventus: Szczesny; Danilo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Frabotta (Bernardeschi 58); Chiesa, Rabiot (McKennie 58), Bentancur, Ramsey (Kulusevski 58); Morata, Ronaldo

Pirlo: 'Juve could not have played worse'

Inter-Juventus 2-0 all goals and highlights - YouTube

Jan 17, 2020

Andrea Pirlo admits Juventus suffered ‘a bad defeat, we could not have played worse than this and it was unexpected’ against Inter.

The Bianconeri barely tested Samir Handanovic and were fortunate there weren’t more goals after the Arturo Vidal header and Nicolò Barella running onto a long Alessandro Bastoni pass.

Lautaro Martinez had several opportunities to extend the lead, but was wasteful in front of goal, whereas Federico Chiesa only really forced a save in the final minutes.

“We got the attitude wrong from the start and when you don’t have the determination to win the duels, it becomes difficult,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“We just didn’t step onto the pitch, we were timorous, afraid of Inter’s attacking play, so in our minds we only focused on defending and weren’t even very aggressive with that either. We allowed Inter to take the initiative and they become devastating in those circumstances.

“Individual quality can only shine if you first match the opposition in terms of aggression and determination. We didn’t do that and it showed.

“It’s a bad defeat, we could not have played worse than this and it was unexpected, but we have to lift our heads and prepare for Wednesday and the Supercoppa against Napoli.”

Juve now have 33 points, seven adrift of Inter, but with a game in hand to be played against Napoli. .............

Chiellini: 'Inter totally out-played Juve'

Inter-Juve, le PAGELLE dei giornali: Rabiot e Bentancur ritmo amatoriale. Ronaldo evaporato, Chiellini c'è | ilbianconero.com

Jan 17, 2020

Giorgio Chiellini discusses his physical battle with Romelu Lukaku, admitting Juventus were ‘out-played in every area of the field’ by Inter in this 2-0 defeat.

The result was never really in doubt at San Siro, as Nicolò Barella created one goal for Arturo Vidal and scored the second himself on a long Alessandro Bastoni ball.

“You can make all the preparations and tests you want, but it’s about putting that into action. We didn’t win a single duel on the field today, Inter wanted it more and deserved the victory,” Chiellini told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s a blow, but it mustn’t be a knockout blow, because we have the time to make up for it and a long way to go this season, starting on Wednesday against Napoli in the Supercoppa. Fortunately, we are playing again in three days, so we can put this behind us and focus on winning the first trophy of the campaign.”

Napoli beat Fiorentina 6-0 this afternoon and play at a high pace, so they’re going to potentially stretch Juve as well.

“There are times when you have to be humble and allow the opponents to have the ball, but our problem today was that when we were on the ball, we made a lot of mistakes and were constantly giving it away or not finding a way through.

“We were out-played in every area of the field, we kept taking too many touches, were moving the ball too slowly, we made too many mistakes.” .............

Juan Cuadrado is rushed back into the starting XI after recovering from COVID-19, helping a decimated Juventus defence with Dejan Kulusevski upfront, while Napoli look to Chucky Lozano, Lorenzo Insigne and Andrea Petagna.

Juve are coming off a painful 2-0 defeat to Inter in Serie A and are forced to do without Paulo Dybala, Merih Demiral, Matthijs de Ligt and Alex Sandro.

Cuadrado had also been ruled out, but he recovered from COVID and was rushed through a medical this morning, travelling to Reggio Emilia in the afternoon and thrown straight into the starting XI.

This shuffles Danilo over to left-back, but there’s another change on the wings.

Federico Chiesa is switched to the left, so he can counter Lozano, with Weston McKennie guarding Lorenzo Insigne on the right.

Kulusevski is preferred to Álvaro Morata as the partner for Cristiano Ronaldo. .............
