HT 0-1: Porto stun Juventus again

Mar 9, 2021

Juventus need a total transformation to reach the Champions League quarter-finals, as they trail Porto 1-0 on the night, 3-1 on aggregate.

The Bianconeri had lost the first leg 2-1 in Portugal, so needed at least a 1-0 win to progress from the Round of 16. Danilo was suspended, with Paulo Dybala injured, Rodrigo Bentancur positive for COVID, plus Matthijs de Ligt not at 100 per cent. Arthur returned for his first start in seven games, but Porto fielded the same XI that won the first leg.

Merih Demiral gave away an avoidable penalty, as Taremi was shielding the ball with his back to goal and there was no need to make the tackle. Sergio Oliviera converted the spot-kick to give Porto a 1-0 lead on the night, 3-1 on aggregate. ..............................

CL: Juventus crash out to 10-man Porto

Immagine

Mar 9, 2021

Juventus are out of the Champions League after failing to get the better of 10-man Porto in extra time, as Federico Chiesa’s heroics were ruined by an error on a free kick.

Alvaro Morata forced a great save with his header after just three minutes on Juan Cuadrado’s cross, but Wojciech Szczesny had to rush off his line to smother at the feet of Moussa Marega, then Mehdi Taremi’s header bounced off the bar after Cuadrado’s slip.

Cuadrado seemed to hurt himself in that move and needed strapping on his right thigh.

Merih Demiral gave away an avoidable penalty, as Taremi was shielding the ball with his back to goal and there was no need to make the tackle. Sergio Oliviera converted the spot-kick to give Porto a 1-0 lead on the night, 3-1 on aggregate. .................................

Juventus finally got into the game with the same man who scored in the first leg. Ronaldo knocked down a Leonardo Bonucci floated ball over the top for Chiesa to smash into the far top corner with the inside of the right boot from a tricky angle.

Moments later, Taremi was booked for a foul on Chiesa, then two minutes after that the striker did something incredibly stupid, kicking the ball into the stands after a foul was given against him. It was an inevitable second yellow card and Porto were down to 10 men. .....................

Ronaldo’s header was also parried, but Chiesa completed the comeback with a rare header, getting to the back post to steer in Cuadrado’s sensational cross.

It was now 3-3 on aggregate, all square on away goals, so would go to extra time.

Ronaldo was surprisingly poor on the night and wasted a huge opportunity to win it with his header well wide on a great Cuadrado cross.

Morata had the ball in the net at the 91st, but he had wandered narrowly offside. Cuadrado then cut inside a defender and curled an astonishing strike, but it bounced off the underside of the crossbar at the far top corner. Almost a memorable and worthy winner, but the tie went to extra time. .............................

Morata really should’ve done better when Kulusevski pulled back to the edge of the area, but he fired straight into the goalkeeper’s arms.

Instead, Porto got back to 2-2 and ahead on aggregate when Sergio Oliviera’s free kick went under the wall and through Ronaldo and Rabiot’s legs, as they jumped at completely the wrong time, leaving Szczesny unsighted to squirm in at the near bottom corner.

It still wasn’t over, as Rabiot made up for his error by nodding in a corner moments later for 4-4 on aggregate, going out on away goals.

Matthijs de Ligt had penalty appeals, but the tackle seemed to be clean, and Rabiot blasted over the bar.

Pirlo defends Juventus approach to Porto

Champions League, Juventus-Porto 3-2: le foto

Mar 9, 2021

Andrea Pirlo would not have done anything differently after Juventus went out to 10-man Porto in the Champions League, but players ‘didn’t sense the danger’ on that free kick.

The Bianconeri crashed out of the Champions League in the Round of 16, despite the fact Porto were down to 10 men from the 54th minute.

Even in extra time, they were only able to scrape a 3-2 win on the night, going out on away goals, 4-4 on aggregate.

This was therefore an even more painful exit than to Ajax or last season Olympique Lyonnais, especially as it was so clearly deserved.

“When you make four big errors over two legs in the Champions League Round of 16, you can get eliminated,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“We didn’t get it wrong when Porto were down to 10, as all we could do was try to spread them out by moving the ball side to side and packing the penalty area with bodies. That is how the goals arrived.

“It will take a few days to cancel this game from our minds, but then we must face every game with the right attitude, realise we’re still only in March and have time to climb the Serie A table.”

After so many comebacks from conceding early goals, is there a problem with the initial Juventus approach?

“We had started well and there was a chance with Alvaro Morata to take the lead immediately. It didn’t go in, there was an error for the penalty, we could’ve conceded a second, but then played the game we should’ve done in the second half, helped also by the extra man.

“I don’t think our starts are a problem. We knew Porto would play like this, the game could change if we scored in the opening minutes. When you concede, then it becomes a completely different match.” ..........

Juventus are without Gigi Buffon, Merih Demiral, Aaron Ramsey, Rodrigo Bentancur and Paulo Dybala against Cagliari.

Coach Andrea Pirlo again has limited choices in Sardinia just days after crashing out of the Champions League against 10-man Porto.

Dybala is still out injured and Bentancur remains in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.

Demiral picked up a muscular injury during the Porto game and is out for circa three weeks. .........................

Pirlo: 'Nothing changes for Juventus'

A5O6LxDH?format=jpg&name=small

Mar 13, 2021

Andrea Pirlo insists the Champions League exit to Porto is not ‘the end of our season’ and Juventus won’t change their path, although Cristiano Ronaldo rumours are to be expected.

“The team obviously suffered a heavy blow, but we resumed training and have the path forward clear in our minds,” said Pirlo in his press conference.

“Cagliari are a team who recently changed their coach and immediately picked up some important results, so we need pride and team spirit to put in a great performance against Cagliari.”

This will be the first game since the devastating Champions League Round of 16 exit to 10-man Porto, prompting suggestions in Italy and Spain that Ronaldo could be sold.

“Ronaldo is fine. It’s natural he is disappointed by what happened the other night, as is everyone. He trained well and has recovered to play tomorrow night.

“It’s natural there are rumours after the elimination, as he is the most important player in the world along with Lionel Messi. He has always done well for us, scoring 90-odd goals and more than proved his worth.

“The project started in recent years planned the enrichment of the squad with players of a certain pedigree. It’s impossible to create a team just of young players. This was the initial project and it will be for the future as well.”

This is Pirlo’s first season as a coach, but he does have more experience than most as a player.

“I had many of these situations in my career, as I won a great deal and also lost. I always tried to get back on track despite disappointment and we’ll do the same here.

“Our season didn’t end on Tuesday, we still have Serie A games to play and the Coppa Italia Final. We resume with the urge to show we are Juventus and we can react to negative moments by getting the best out of ourselves. It depends on us and the targets we’ve set ourselves. .........................

HT 0-3: Ronaldo hat-trick crushes Cagliari

Mar 14, 2021

Cristiano Ronaldo answered his critics and blew Cagliari away, scoring a Juventus hat-trick in the first 32 minutes.

For the first time, Juve started Federico Chiesa, Dejan Kulusevski, Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata together.

It took under 10 minutes to break the deadlock, Juan Cuadrado’s corner finding Ronaldo for a free header from six yards.

CR7 was booked moments later for dangerous play, as he went in high to meet a Chiesa cross, clattering Alessio Cragno in the face, leaving him with a cut to the chin.

Morata’s finish was too weak and straight at Cragno, then the Spaniard rolled across for Ronaldo, who was caught by the goalkeeper for a penalty. Ronaldo converted it himself with sheer power, despite Cragno getting something on it.

However, Ronaldo completed his hat-trick, gathering Chiesa’s cross, a little shimmy to unnerve Daniele Rugani and then blasting into the far top corner.

It was also a perfect hat-trick, as he scored with his head, right foot and left.

Ronaldo could've had a fourth with the final kick of the game whe sent clear, but Cragno bravely rushed off his line to make the block.

Pirlo explains Juventus tactics

Cagliari-Juventus, Pirlo: "L'ntervento di Ronaldo non era da espulsione"

Mar 14, 2021

Andrea Pirlo does not believe Cristiano Ronaldo’s intervention on Alessio Cragno warranted a red card and explains Juventus tactics against Cagliari.

The Bianconeri needed a response after the Champions League exit to 10-man Porto and they got it from Ronaldo with a hat-trick in the opening 32 minutes.

“It was the right approach, which we needed after failing to qualify the other day, and we started on the right foot,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

The coach was asked about the tactics used, because people cannot seem to decide if Juve are playing with a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2.

“Danilo is an intelligent player who can have his say in any role. We are trying him here at the moment because we know he can make an impact there.

“We had three in defence in possession, with Juan Cuadrado pushing up and Dejan Kulusevski coming more inside. We defend with four, but then play out from the back with three. ...........

Pirlo: 'Juve duty to pressure Inter'

Juventus TV | Highlights, Videos, Exclusive Content

Mar 20, 2021

Andrea Pirlo says Juventus have the ‘duty’ to put pressure on leaders Inter, is without Alex Sandro against Benevento and wants to see ‘the overall play improve.’

“It’s an important game and comes just before a break for international duty, so it’s possible minds will wander towards what’s happening next week,” said the coach in his press conference.

“However, this is a fundamental match for our campaign, we are up against a team in a good period of form, I know their coach well and he’ll come here trying to get a result.”

Pirlo was teammates with Pippo Inzaghi both for Milan and within the Italy squad that won the 2006 World Cup.

“I haven’t spoken to Pippo lately, but I always follow his progress with affection. He did so well to win the Serie B title last year and is proving himself to be an excellent coach.”

Juve are without Paulo Dybala, Aaron Ramsey, Merih Demiral and Alex Sandro, while Rodrigo Bentancur has recovered from COVID, but Juan Cuadrado is suspended.

“Gigi Buffon is feeling better, he trained and we’ll see if he will play tomorrow. We are all waiting for Dybala, who will have a week or two more to work in time for his return.

“Alvaro Morata is fine and will start, as will Dejan Kulusevski. I was impressed with the tactical approach we took against Cagliari, but I had no doubts that it would. When everyone sacrifices themselves in both defence and attack, it all becomes easier. ...................

“It is our duty to put pressure on Inter, as we have the opportunity to close the gap, but it all depends on us. We asked for information and accepted it. Different things have been done in this case compared to other situations.

“It happens during a positive moment for Inter, who will also be able to keep hold of their players rather than send them on international duty. In that sense, they were fortunate.”

Bentancur returns for the first time since he was diagnosed with COVID-19, having been given the all-clear on Friday.

Gianluigi Buffon is also available and could well be in the starting XI.

Juventus unveil anti-racism shirt

Immagine

Mar 20, 2021

The Lega Serie A airs its anti-racism video before every game this weekend, but Juventus are also using a special edition shirt with racism statistics.

March 21 is the International Day Against Racial Discrimination, so a brief film featuring many Serie A players will air before every match in Italy this weekend.

That’s only the beginning, as Juventus also announced their own initiative.

“The Juventus players will wear on their backs customised versions of the shirt numbers (in accordance to Lega Serie A regulations) that will feature, from 0 to 9, a statistic linked to racism.

“A perfect opportunity to further reinforce the message of the importance of the fight against racial discrimination and through numbers to provide a snapshot as real as possible of the current situation on the issue as real as possible.” ..................

Probable line-ups: Juventus v Benevento

Immagine

Mar 20, 2021

Federico Bernardeschi is expected to start as a left-back for Juventus, with Dejan Kulusevski, Federico Chiesa, Alvaro Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo against Benevento.

The Bianconeri released their squad list for the game and are without suspended Juan Cuadrado, plus injured Aaron Ramsey, Alex Sandro, Merih Demiral and Paulo Dybala.

That means Bernardeschi is the favourite to play at left-back, a role he has taken on occasionally in an emergency situation with some success.

Much as Cuadrado was an attacking right-winger and became a right-back under Maurizio Sarri, Andrea Pirlo is eager to do the same with Bernardeschi.

Giorgio Chiellini is more likely to play than Leonardo Bonucci as part of a natural squad rotation to avoid fatigue.

As always with Pirlo, Juve start in a 4-4-2 and then mutate into a 3-5-2 when going on the attack, with Chiesa and Kulusevski encouraged to bomb forward.

Arthur is expected to start in midfield with Adrien Rabiot, while Morata partners Cristiano Ronaldo. ..................

Probable line-ups

Juventus (4-4-2): Buffon; Danilo, De Ligt, Chiellini, Bernardeschi; Kulusevski, Arthur, Rabiot, Chiesa; Morata, Ronaldo

Benevento (3-5-2): Montipò; Tuia, Caldirola, Barba; Tello, Hetemaj, Viola, Ionita, Improta; Lapadula, Caprari

Juventus use Federico Bernardeschi as a left-back, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvaro Morata, Federico Chiesa and Dejan Kulusevski in an all-attack approach to Benevento.

The Bianconeri must do without suspended Juan Cuadrado, who joins injured Aaron Ramsey, Alex Sandro, Merih Demiral and Paulo Dybala in the stands.

This lack of options means that Danilo moves over to the right, with Bernardeschi introduced as a left-back, a role he has played occasionally, but generally only as a substitute.

Andrea Pirlo is holding nothing back, also unleashing Chiesa and Kulusevski on the wings, with Morata and hat-trick hero Ronaldo upfront.

Benevento are struggling badly and sliding back down towards the relegation zone, so the squad was very briefly put into a training retreat this week. ..................

Juve were held to a 1-1 draw by Benevento in November, so will know not to take anything for granted.

Juventus: Szczesny; Danilo, De Ligt, Bonucci, Bernardeschi; Kulusevski, Arthur, Rabiot, Chiesa; Morata, Ronaldo

Benevento: Montipò; Tuia, Caldirola, Barba; Foulon, Hetemaj, Viola, Ionita, Improta; Gaich, Lapadula

‘Juventus have no soul, the title race is over’

Vorige zomer trok hij bijna naar Club Brugge, nu scoort Arge... - Het Nieuwsblad Mobile

Mar 22, 2021

Italian media criticise Andrea Pirlo after Juventus’ defeat against Benevento: ‘The Bianconeri have no soul, the title race is over.’

The Old Lady are now ten points off leaders Inter and only two points are dividing the defending Serie A champions with fifth-placed Napoli.

Juventus fans have been criticising the coach and the management for this season’s results and Italian sports papers analyse the Old Lady’s flop against Pippo Inzaghi’s side. ...............

“Please come back for a fourth win in a row. The approach was not the same as the Cagliari game. This time the title race is over. Juventus put in a chaotic performance, and the final result is a natural consequence,” is the analysis of Tuttosport.

The Turin-based paper rates Pirlo 4/10, while Il Corriere dello Sport rates the coach 4.5. ..............

Pirlo: 'The players attending the party are not called up'

Immagine

Apr 2, 2021

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo confirmed the three players attending the party at Weston McKennie’s house are not called up for the match against Torino. ..............

“The three players involved are not called up for the match tomorrow,” Pirlo said at a press conference.

“They will resume working with time and then we’ll see when. I made the decision and the club did the rest.

“For the technical part, I decided. These things have always happened, but this is not the time for what is going on in the world.

“It was not the right time to do it, we are examples and must behave like it.”

Pirlo: 'Juve have only one target'

Apr 2, 2021

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo said the ‘goal is to win all the games’ and stressed his players will ‘continue to pull in the same direction’.

“The approach is to win all the games and then see what happens in front and behind,” Pirlo said at a press conference.

“The goal is to win the one tomorrow and then think about the next one. Our goal is to win all the games.”

The local derby is important for Pirlo’s men and the coach believes he will see a great performance from the Old Lady.

“There will be great pride because it’s a team of champions who have already faced moments like these,” he said. “They will have a great desire for revenge and to prove that they are a fantastic group of players.” ..............

Juventus are forced to radically reshuffle, and the pressure is on in the Turin Derby, as Torino use Antonio Sanabria and Andrea Belotti.

This has been a rough couple of weeks for Andrea Pirlo, whose job was put in doubt after a shock 1-0 home defeat to Benevento effectively ended Scudetto hopes.

The rescheduled game with Napoli is coming up on Wednesday, but to make matters worse, Gigi Buffon was given a one-match ban for using a blasphemous phrase, while Leonardo Bonucci and Merih Demiral contracted COVID on international duty.

The club dropped Weston McKennie, Paulo Dybala and Arthur Melo after they were caught breaking lockdown rules during a party at the American midfielder’s house. It means Pirlo has precious few options to choose from, with Danilo in a more advanced role.

Federico Chiesa supports Alvaro Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo. ..............

HT 1-1: Toro reply to Juventus

Federico Chiesa saw his early solo effort cancelled out by an Antonio Sanabria header, as Torino are holding Juventus at half-time in the Derby della Mole.

There was so much riding on this Derby della Mole, as Toro were one point clear of the relegation zone and Juve saw even their top four status at risk after a shock home defeat to Benevento. ..............

Juve had three chances in the first five minutes. Alvaro Morata forced a save with Salvatore Sirigu’s legs from close range, then Federico Chiesa hit a half-volley over and also stung Salvatore Sirigu’s gloves.

Chiesa broke the deadlock when he completed a give-and-go with Morata, although the Spaniard didn’t seem entirely aware he was meant to pass it back, as the former Fiorentina man sprinted onto the ball and nutmegged Sirigu from a tight angle.

Wojciech Szczesny got down to parry a Rolando Mandragora rocket with one hand, but the ball went up rather than away from goal, so Antonio Sanabria pounced to nod in the rebound.

Torino 2-2 Juventus: Tight Turin Derby

Immagine

Apr 3, 2021

Cristiano Ronaldo thanked VAR for his Juventus equaliser, but Torino were the more impressive team in the exciting 2-2 Derby della Mole.

There was so much riding on this Derby della Mole, as Toro were one point clear of the relegation zone and Juve saw even their top four status at risk after a shock home defeat to Benevento.

The second half was only 13 seconds old by the time Torino managed to turn the game around completely thanks to two Juve errors. Dejan Kulusevski made a horrible back-pass and Sanabria then surprised Szczesny at the near post, bending back the goalkeeper’s gloves.

Another Ronaldo header went over and he thought his goal was disallowed when Giorgio Chiellini flicked on a Federico Bernardeschi header and CR7 nodded in from point-blank range. However, after a long wait to check all the positions, VAR ruled it was onside and Juve equalised.

Moments after that, it was almost a turnaround, as Rodrigo Bentancur’s strike was fingertipped onto the base of the upright by Sirigu.

Szczesny also had the tips of his gloves called into action, pushing a towering Sanabria header over the bar, then deep into stoppages palmed Daniele Baselli’s free kick away.

Pirlo: As usual, we make life complicated for ourselves

Immagine

Apr 4, 2021

Juventus continued to drop points and see themselves on the verge of missing out on Champions League qualification with another debacle in Serie A action. Despite taking the lead early in the Derby della Mole, they found themselves behind Torino seconds into the second half before needing a late equalizer to rescue a point while virtually bidding farewell to any chance of catching Inter Milan at the top of the table.

Speaking after the game, coach Andrea Pirlo was at a loss to explain his side’s errors which cost them all three points.

“We had started well, taken the lead, and that’s the most difficult thing against teams that defend. As usual, we make life complicated for ourselves. We had hoped for a different second half, but we made that error straight away and had to get back into it.

“The error was similar to the one we conceded against Lazio, unfortunately these are happening a bit too often and we have these lapses in concentration.

“We must learn that we cannot lose concentration for even a second, because the moment we lose the ball, it’s only right that we are then punished.”

He saw his side create plenty of chances to win the game, but poor finishing at times combined with fatal mistakes defending ensured they had to come from behind to grab a point.

“When you play against teams that defend deep, it’s difficult to attack the space, so you have to go round the flanks and try to create some width. We do try these tactics, especially against sides who have five at the back.

“It’s important to get crosses in and above all put bodies into the box. After the second goal, we got the game back on track, hitting the woodwork and that chance with Cristiano. It’s only natural that against teams who pack their final third, we can’t move the ball quickly, as there aren’t any spaces.

“Mistakes happen, whether you are a player, a coach or a referee. We have to stay fully focused, stay on our toes and understand the moment we are going through. Some sharpness can be lacking after international duty, but we cannot afford to let go even for a moment now.” .............................

“At the moment, we are making too many horizontal passes and that makes us predictable.”

Pirlo: 'An important match, Dybala is available'

Juve Napoli, Pirlo: 'Potremmo cambiare ancora. 'hiesa? Ne stiamo parlando con la società' | Sky Sport

Apr 6, 2021

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo said Paulo Dybala is available for the ‘important’ match against Napoli. ‘Having him available means a lot’.

The Bianconeri prepare for the rescheduled match against the Partenopei tomorrow and Pirlo said he ‘expects an open and great game’.

“It will be an important match for the table,” Pirlo said at a press conference. “Napoli are experiencing a positive period.

“We want to play the game and try to score points. I expect an open match and I hope it will be a great game.”

The match has already been postponed once and this time Juventus are without Merih Demiral, Leonardo Bonucci and Federico Bernardeschi due to COVID-19.

“We respect the protocol as always and we are in tune with what the ASL says,” he added. “We will present ourselves as we have always done.”

Pirlo added that he’s confident the team is behind him.

“I’m always in contact with them,” he contined. “I like to talk before and after training, I feel great confidence.

“The players follow me, they want revenge and they are the first to be sad about the situation.” .................................

Pirlo confirmed he was aware of the meeting between patron Andrea Agnelli and Max Allegri.

“I have daily contact with the President, we always tell each other all the things that happen,” Pirlo said. “I was aware of this meeting and his confidence, then it’s normal that it’s up to me to prove that I can be the coach next season.”

Juventus welcome Gigi Buffon back to the starting XI, but not the ‘lockdown party rebels’, while Napoli go with Hirving Lozano, Dries Mertens and Piotr Zielinski.

This Week 3 fixture was originally meant to be played on October 4, but cancelled when Napoli were ordered not to travel by the local health authority following COVID cases.

Both clubs are locked together in joint fourth place, so this could be a potentially decisive result in the race for a Champions League spot.

Juve are in crisis after losing to Benevento and only drawing 2-2 with Torino, but Weston McKennie, Arthur and Paulo Dybala all return after they were dropped for the Turin Derby due to breaking lockdown rules with a party at the American’s house.

However, they are not in the starting XI and there are even reports Dybala’s knee pain has flared up again.

Leonardo Bonucci and Federico Bernardeschi are out with COVID-19, but Merih Demiral has recovered and is on the bench.

Buffon returns after his ban for using a blasphemous phrase and is given the gloves after Wojciech Szczesny’s recent errors.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave Juventus the half-time lead over Napoli on a stunning Federico Chiesa assist, but Juventus had a penalty appeal rejected too.

Cristiano Ronaldo should’ve opened the scoring in the opening two minutes, but he incredibly only glanced the ball from six yards when allowed a free header on Danilo’s cross from the right.

Piotr Zielinski also wasted a big chance by firing over, but Ronaldo made up for it with the opening goal. Most of the credit goes to Federico Chiesa, who twisted and turned between two defenders down the right with a mazy run and rolled across for the simple finish from 12 yards.

Fabian Ruiz ballooned over from a very promising position, while Juve had penalty appeals for Chucky Lozano wiping out Chiesa at the by-line. It was an incredible decision by referee Mariani.
