Juventus 2-1 Napoli: Dybala decides head-to-head

Immagine

Apr 7, 2021

Paulo Dybala made his comeback with a bang, scoring the winner for Juventus against Napoli in a head-to-head for fourth place.

Cristiano Ronaldo should’ve opened the scoring in the opening two minutes, but he incredibly only glanced the ball from six yards when allowed a free header on Danilo’s cross from the right.

Piotr Zielinski also wasted a big chance by firing over, but Ronaldo made up for it with the opening goal. Most of the credit goes to Federico Chiesa, who twisted and turned between two defenders down the right with a mazy run and rolled across for the simple finish from 12 yards.

Fabian Ruiz ballooned over from a very promising position, while Juve had penalty appeals for Chucky Lozano wiping out Chiesa at the by-line, an incredible decision bij the referee who denied the penalty.

After the restart, Gigi Buffon had his gloves stung by Giovanni Di Lorenzo, who was in acres of space down the right from an Insigne pass.

Buffon was called into action again, beating away a Fabian Ruiz snapshot from outside the area. Dybala made his comeback with a bang. He gathered from Rodrigo Bentancur just inside the box, turned and a left-foot shot was remote-controlled into the far bottom corner.

Napoli got a penalty when Giorgio Chiellini brought down Osimhen and Insigne converted by sending Buffon the wrong way. It was his second consecutive spot-kick against Juve, having missed the first three.

Juventus: Buffon; Danilo, De Ligt, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Cuadrado (McKennie 69), Bentancur, Rabiot, Chiesa (Arthur 80); Morata (Dybala 69), Ronaldo

Napoli: Meret; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Koulibaly, Hysaj (Mario Rui 76); Fabian Ruiz (Petagna 89), Demme (Politano 54); Lozano (Osimhen 54), Zielinski, L Insigne; Mertens (Elmas 76)

Pirlo wants same Juve 'spirit' with Genoa

Immagine

Apr 10, 2021

Andrea Pirlo hopes Juventus have ‘the same spirit’ against Genoa that they showed to beat Napoli, but Paulo Dybala is not ready to start yet.

The Bianconeri’s campaign is back on track after the win over Napoli, decided by Dybala off the bench, putting them in third place and just one point behind Milan in second.

“It’s perhaps much easier to find the right spirit in a big match like Napoli, but we need the same attitude even against smaller clubs, starting from tomorrow,” said the coach in his press conference.

“We need to find some consistency and that means facing tomorrow’s game with ferocity. Beating Napoli is meaningless unless we follow it up with the same performance against Genoa.”

“I can confirm Wojciech Szczesny will start tomorrow. I don’t think Paulo Dybala will start, because he was out for three months, so he needs another slightly longer spell as a substitute first.”

“I’ve always said Dybala is an important player and unfortunately I haven’t had him at my disposal very much this season.” .............................

Juventus 3-1 Genoa: Juve do enough

Immagine

Apr 11, 2021

Dejan Kulusevski, Alvaro Morata and Weston McKennie got the goals for the victory against Genoa.

It didn’t take long to break through, as Juan Cuadrado made Rovella dizzy with a shimmy, pulling back from the right for Dejan Kulusevski’s left-foot curler from just inside the area.

Juve doubled their lead when Federico Chiesa caught Ivan Radovanovic napping in the centre-circle, sprinted forward and forced a save, but while Ronaldo’s follow-up came off the post from a yard, Alvaro Morata was more accurate on the rebound.

Scamacca did get his goal straight after the restart, allowed a completely free header on a corner after De Ligt slipped.

Not for the first time this season, Juventus came out of the half-time break looking a very different team. Genoa had two huge chances to equalise in quick succession, as first Szczesny got down for a one-handed save on Marko Pjaca’s daisy-cutter, then the same player left Chiellini standing before blasting over from just inside the box.

Ronaldo also skimmed the upright at the other end, but Genoa were taking the initiative and pouring forward. However, Paolo Ghiglione lagged back on a floated Danilo pass, allowing substitute Weston McKennie to spring the offside trap and score just two minutes after coming off the bench.

Juve had chances to add a fourth, with Perin denying Alex Sandro and an opportunity that bobbled around in the six-yard box in stoppages.

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado (Alex Sandro 46), De Ligt, Chiellini, Danilo; Kulusevski (McKennie 68), Bentancur, Rabiot (Ramsey 84), Chiesa (Arthur 75); Morata (Dybala 68), Ronaldo

Genoa: Perin; Masiello, Radovanovic, Criscito; Biraschi (Ghiglione 46), Rovella (Zajc 62), Badelj, Behrami (Pjaca 46), Zappacosta; Pandev (Shomurodov 62), Scamacca (Melegoni 70)

Pirlo: 'I'd give myself six out of 10'

Pirlo dopo Juve-Genoa: "Dybala? Deciderà la società. La mia stagione? Mi do un 6 di stima" - Italia News Today

Apr 11, 2021

Andrea Pirlo gives himself ‘six out of 10’ for his debut Juventus season and admits his style of football has not been ‘fully implemented’ yet.

“We had the right attitude at the start, it all seemed easy, then we allowed a chance at the end of the first half due to a lack of concentration,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s happened before that we concede goals either side of the half and it almost happened again. We came out wanting to take the initiative, but we went too deep, ran a few risks and didn’t take the chances that would’ve allowed us to be a bit more relaxed.”

“Genoa put a lot of players between the lines, so we considered a change of tactics during the game. Unfortunately, we dropped points in games that on paper seemed easier, which made life complicated unnecessarily. That wasn’t the case today, as we were controlling the match, but there were a few distractions that made us run some risks.”

Pirlo was asked if he still feels that he has to prove himself on the Juventus bench and how he would judge his debut campaign.

“All coaches must feel like they have to prove themselves every single day, let alone me, as I am in my first coaching experience. Football has been my dream since I was a child and I will keep working hard to improve.

“I’d give myself a six out of 10 for this season so far. I know that I must do more, and when you don’t achieve certain results, the coach is the first to take responsibility.

“My idea of football is to dominate the game and press the opposition. For a series of reasons, we’ve been unable to fully implement it, but the team is eager and we’ll keep working on it.” ....................

Gasperini risks three-week suspension

Atalanta-Juventus di Coppa Italia. Dove vederla in tv e streaming

Apr 13, 2021

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini could miss the Coppa Italia Final after ‘insulting an anti-doping inspector during a surprise visit’.

The anti-doping prosecutor Pierfilippo Laviani has, according to news agency ANSA, charged the Orobici coach and asked for 20 days of disqualification.

The report clarifies that the Atalanta coach ‘insulted an inspector during a surprise check and railed against the entire anti-doping system, interrupting an ongoing test on an Atalanta player and forcing the player to go to train’. ....................

The report claims Gasperini could even face up to six months disqualification, if he has violated the article 3, paragraph 3 of the anti-doping code.

The tactician didn’t accept the plea bargain and asked for a hearing scheduled for May 10 in front of the national anti-doping court.

If Gasperini is suspended for 20 days, he will miss the Coppa Italia Final on May 19 this year, when La Dea are scheduled to play Juventus at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

No Ronaldo as Juve visit Atalanta

Apr 17, 2021

Juventus named their squad for tomorrow’s showdown with Atalanta, missing Cristiano Ronaldo and Federico Bernardeschi.

The big news from today’s Andrea Pirlo press conference was that Ronaldo won’t even make the trip, as he is struggling with a flexor issue in his thigh.

That means Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata are the only forwards available, with Felix Correia bumped up from the youth team.

Leonardo Bonucci returns after recovering from COVID-19, but Bernardeschi is still positive for the virus. ....................

Pirlo: 'Juve countermeasures for Atalanta'

Immagine

Apr 17, 2021

After losing Cristiano Ronaldo to injury, Andrea Pirlo assures Juventus have prepared ‘countermeasures’ to Atalanta. ‘They have particular characteristics.’

The press conference began with the shock revelation that Ronaldo has a muscular issue, so will not even be making the trip to Bergamo.

Instead, Paulo Dybala will start, presumably alongside Alvaro Morata.

“We worked hard during the week, knowing Atalanta have some very particular characteristics,” continued Pirlo.

“They play a different style of football to other teams and we have prepared some countermeasures. I am feeling confident. ....................

These teams will also face off in the Coppa Italia Final next month and it could well have a crowd in the stands of the Mapei Stadium, as the Italian Government is opening up the arenas from May 1.

“This is great news, but not just for football, as it means everything is starting to get back to normal. If the stadiums are full, it means people are feeling better.”

Atalanta 1-0 Juventus: Dea leapfrog Old Lady

Immagine

Apr 18, 2021

A late deflected Ruslan Malinovskyi strike gave Atalanta the points in this showdown for third place and their first Serie A win over Juventus since 2001.

Only one point separated these teams in third and fourth going into the weekend, but Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t make the trip due to a muscular issue, with Federico Bernardeschi suffering from COVID, so Paulo Dybala had to start. The pressure was largely on the Bianconeri, who ran the real risk of missing out on the Champions League.  ....................

Juventus really should’ve taken the lead on 34 minutes when Federico Chiesa caught Joakim Maehle napping in the box and set up Alvaro Morata, but the Spaniard took one too many touches, tried to dink it over Pierluigi Gollini and Berat Djimsiti was able to clear off the line.

Maehle got another decisive block in on Chiesa from a Cuadrado pull-back. Muriel’s curler flashed wide, but Chiesa pulled up with a muscular problem and had to come off.

Malinovskyi came off the bench and made the difference, as he has done many times recently for La Dea. His free kick from an improbably long distance still forced a tough save from Szczesny, but the move continued and Malinovskyi thumped it again from the edge of the box, a deflection off Alex Sandro wrong-footing the goalkeeper.

Atalanta: Gollini; Toloi, Palomino, Djimsiti; Maehle (Malinovskyi 72), De Roon, Freuler, Gosens; Pessina (Pasalic 46); Muriel (Ilicic 68), Duvan Zapata

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, De Ligt, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; McKennie (Arthur 77), Bentancur, Rabiot, Chiesa (Danilo 58); Dybala (Kulusevski 68), Morata

Pirlo pleased with Juve performance

Classifica aggiornata dopo Atalanta-Juve: Gasperini sorpassa Pirlo

Apr 18, 2021

Andrea Pirlo insists Juventus ‘played the match we needed to’ in their 1-0 defeat to Atalanta and he is confident they’ll have ‘no problem’ qualifying for the Champions League.

The Bianconeri dropped down to fourth place and it could be fifth tonight if Napoli manage to beat Inter at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Ruslan Malinovskyi’s deflected shot off Alex Sandro proved decisive at the 87th minute in Bergamo.

“It was a good game against a strong team. We played the match we needed to, then they were lucky with the late goal, but we played with great determination and aggression. It’s disappointing, we could’ve brought home at least a point,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia. .........................

Despite the defeat, Pirlo was impressed with the Juventus performance against Atalanta, who they will face again in the Coppa Italia Final on May 19.

“We have not faced all our games with the same attitude and determination. It’s a completely different team when we have those elements, but despite me pointing it out, we have dropped too many points by not having the right attitude in the smaller fixtures.

“We knew Atalanta would make it a duel all over the field, so that’s how we prepared it. We kept good possession, covered the spaces, Atalanta can force you to play differently to other situations, but we did well.” ..................

Juventus must put the Super League drama aside and focus on qualifying for the Champions League, as Cristiano Ronaldo returns against struggling Parma.

The last few days have been chaotic for the Bianconeri, with their 1-0 defeat to Atalanta seeing them slide into fourth place, then Andrea Agnelli at the forefront of the breakaway Super League project that collapsed in just 48 hours.

It all means qualifying for the Champions League is more important than ever and certainly not a given for the Old Lady.

Ronaldo returns after injury forced him out of the Atalanta trip and he partners Paulo Dybala, leaving Alvaro Morata on the bench.

Federico Chiesa is out of action, while Federico Bernardeschi only got the all-clear from COVID yesterday. ..................

Four were defenders on the scoresheet when Juventus beat Parma 3-1 at the Allianz Stadium, as Alex Sandro's brace turned the game around.

Gaston Brugman has scored the opener from a free kick and Juventus struggled to answer in the first half, but Alex Sandro found an opening when he took two touches in the area and smashed in the equaliser before half-time.

The same Brazilian was the man who turned the game around after two minutes in the second half, before Matthijs de Ligt added a third for the hosts.

Juventus had to put the Super League drama aside and focus on the match against Parma, fighting for a place in the Champions League next season.

The last few days have been chaotic for the Bianconeri, with their 1-0 defeat to Atalanta seeing them slide into fourth place.

Patron Andrea Agnelli was then on the forefront of the breakaway Super League project that collapsed in just 48 hours.

Fans have protested, but the collapse means qualifying for the Champions League is more important than ever and is not a given for Juventus.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned against struggling Parma and was close to scoring after only seven minutes.

The Portuguese managed to direct a powerful low cross, but goalkeeper Simone Colombi managed to get down quickly and reacted just in time to stop it on the line. .............................

Pirlo: “We made life difficult for ourselves”

Pirlo: We'll evaluate if Ronaldo should be in the wall - Black & White & Read All Over

Apr 21, 2021

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo admits Cristiano Ronaldo could no longer be in the wall for free kicks, but he defends the Super League idea. 'Something has to change.'

The Bianconeri badly needed a result after their 1-0 defeat to Atalanta, and had gone behind to a ferocious Gaston Brugman free kick, but turned it around through Alex Sandro’s career first brace and Matthijs de Ligt to beat Parma 3-1.

“We made life difficult for ourselves with the opening goal, then ran a few other risks on set plays, and it’s a pity because we’d done well defending from dead ball situations this season,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“Maybe we don’t maintain the same concentration and pace from match to match. Sometimes we are a little slow, we hold onto the ball, allow the opposition to occupy the space and it all grinds to a halt.”

“Agnelli explained what was happening, but that the most important thing was to secure a place in the top four to qualify for the Champions League. He reassured and encouraged us ahead of this game.”

“I already spoke about it yesterday, so did the President and the director. We all know the same things. Something has to be changed on the European level, because the ideas that were proposed were good ones, but we are also open to other suggestions and will respect the rules.”

As expected, Federico Chiesa and Merih Demiral are out of the Juventus squad travelling to Tuscany to face Fiorentina.

Coach Andrea Pirlo confirmed in his press conference that Chiesa had not recovered from a muscular issue and will not be able to face his former club.

Defender Demiral is also out of action, but he said Giorgio Chiellini and Aaron Ramsey might start, with Adrien Rabiot definitely in the first XI.

According to the latest reports, Alvaro Morata is the favourite to partner Cristiano Ronaldo, sending Paulo Dybala to the bench. .............

Both teams are desperate for points, as Fiorentina must escape the drop with Dusan Vlahovic and Franck Ribery, while Federico Chiesa is injured for struggling Juventus.

There is a long-running rivalry between these clubs that goes back decades and it only became even more bitter after Chiesa pushed for a transfer to the Bianconeri last summer.

He won’t return to face his former teammates, as he is out injured along with Merih Demiral, but Paulo Dybala gets the nod rather than Alvaro Morata alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

Juan Cuadrado is another former Fiorentina man, while the Viola start ex-Juve defender Martin Caceres. .............

Fiorentina 1-1 Juventus: Morata replies to Vlahovic

Immagine

Apr 25, 2021

Juventus stalled in Florence, as Alvaro Morata came off the bench to cancel out the cheeky Dusan Vlahovic Panenka-style penalty. ....................

Fiorentina were unlucky on 21 minutes, as Erick Pulgar’s long-range strike was deflected off Leonardo Bonucci, bounced off the far post and into a grateful Szczesny’s arms.

The pressure finally paid off when Adrien Rabiot was penalised for handling the ball with his arm straight up in the air. Vlahovic stepped up and confirmed he’s got confidence in spades, as he beat Szczesny with a Panenka chipped penalty.

Aaron Ramsey should’ve equalised just before the break when he was sent clear one-on-one with Bartlomiej Dragowski by Rodrigo Bentancur after good work from Paulo Dybala, but at full stretch the Welshman prodded wide.

Andrea Pirlo transformed his team at half-time, introducing Alvaro Morata and Dejan Kulusevski to go back to 4-4-2. It certainly made an impact, because within 31 seconds Morata swung in what was probably meant to be a left-footed cross, but it bent into the far top corner with Dragowski flapping at thin air.

Matthijs de Ligt was booked and will be suspended against Udinese, while a Pulgar free kick was deflected to land on the roof of the net. .................................

Juve should’ve taken the lead on 84 minutes, but Cristiano Ronaldo only grazed his head to a Kulusevski cross at the back post and it went wide.

Fiorentina: Dragowski; Caceres, Milenkovic, Pezzella; Venuti (Martinez Quarta 46), Amrabat, Pulgar, Castrovilli (Eysseric 85), Igor (Biraghi 72); Vlahovic, Ribery (Kouame 72)

Pirlo admits Juventus 'can't be happy'

Kan een afbeelding zijn van Maurizio Motta

Apr 25, 2021

Andrea Pirlo admits Juventus had a ‘horrible’ first half in their Fiorentina draw, his experiment ‘didn’t work’ and he cannot be happy with his season so far.

The Bianconeri again disappointed on their travels, as Alvaro Morata scored with what appeared to be a wayward cross-shot just 31 seconds after coming off the bench.

He cancelled out the cheeky Dusan Vlahovic Panenka-style penalty, which was awarded for an Adrien Rabiot handling offence.

“It was a horrible first half. We should’ve started in a different way, because this was a fundamental fixture in the race for the Champions League places, but we were too slow, our distances were all wrong and we were always second to the ball,” confessed the coach on Sky Sport Italia.

Pirlo surprised by starting with a 3-5-2 formation with Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo upfront.

“After Danilo’s injury yesterday, we changed to three at the back, with Aaron Ramsey and Dybala between the lines. It didn’t work, so we introduced Morata after the break to give us a change of pace.

“Our first half was bad, the second a little better, but it still wasn’t good enough. We tried one thing and ended up doing something completely different, but we adjusted to the way we have done throughout the season and it went better.”

Dybala was substituted at the break, but did Pirlo ever feel tempted to substitute Cristiano Ronaldo instead?

“I don’t think Ronaldo did badly. He had a few chances and overall was not bad. It was the team that should’ve attacked the space more and we did see some of that in the second half, as Fiorentina had a high line. ...................

Udinese 1-2 Juventus: Ronaldo double to the rescue

Udinese Juventus 1-2: gol e highlights della partita di Serie A | Sky Sport

May 2, 2021

Juventus put in another poor performance, but Cristiano Ronaldo pounced on two Udinese errors late on to give them the victory to catch Atalanta and Milan in second.

The pressure was on Andrea Pirlo, with reports he could even be sacked if he failed to win here, as even a Champions League spot was at risk. Alvaro Morata was not fully fit, with Federico Chiesa and Merih Demiral out, so Paulo Dybala partnered Cristiano Ronaldo.

Juve were caught napping when Rodrigo De Paul took a free kick quickly, sending Nahuel Molina down the right for a ferocious right-foot strike that squirmed in despite Wojciech Szczesny getting something on it.

Udinese have not yet conceded from a corner yet this season and that record was almost broken on 27 minutes when Weston McKennie turned a diving header wide from six yards. ..................................

De Paul stuck out an elbow in the wall to deflect Ronaldo’s free kick and it was an inevitable penalty, the fifth game in a row that Udinese have given away a spot-kick. Ronaldo wasn’t going to turn that gift down and smashed the spot-kick past Scuffet.

Juve could smell blood and pounced for the kill, as Adrien Rabiot whipped a cross to the back post for Ronaldo’s header, surprising Scuffet from point-blank range. The way Andrea Pirlo sprinted off the touchline to celebrate showed how important this was to their season, as it sends them into joint second place with Atalanta and Milan.

Pirlo praises Juventus 'determination'

Udinese-Juventus, Pirlo: "Complimenti all'Inter. Apriremo un nuovo ciclo"

May 2, 2021

Andrea Pirlo was clearly emotionally exhausted after the comeback win over Udinese and praised the ‘determination and fight’ Juventus showed.

The Bianconeri again put in a frankly poor performance at the Dacia Arena, barely creating any chances after they were caught out on a quickly-taken free kick for Nahuel Molina’s goal.

They were revitalised by a penalty for Rodrigo De Paul’s avoidable handling offence, then Cristiano Ronaldo nodded in at the back post to complete the turnaround.

“This victory arrived with determination and fight. We once again made life complicated for ourselves, but we wanted to bring home the result right to the end and that’s what is important,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was particularly crucial considering the results from this afternoon. This is a group, it’s strong, it wants to fight for its targets and we never lacked that. Sometimes the attitude during games was not worthy of Juventus, but the final embrace was a show of our unity. Now we need to continue with this spirit.” ..................................

Federico Chiesa returns with Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata as Juventus are practically in a play-off with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Brahim Diaz’s Milan.

This is essentially a play-off for Champions League football and therefore an extraordinarily important showdown for both this season and their future.

They went into the weekend locked together in second place with Atalanta, and just two points clear of Napoli, but both those teams won already.

Giorgio Chiellini is surprisingly chosen to partner Matthijs de Ligt, leaving Leonardo Bonucci on the bench against his old club.

The good news is the return of Chiesa, who missed the last three games with an injury.

He is thrown straight into the starting XI with Ronaldo and Morata, sending Paulo Dybala to the bench, while Adrien Rabiot and Weston McKennie play in midfield. .............................................

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, De Ligt, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; McKennie, Bentancur, Rabiot, Chiesa; Morata, Ronaldo

Juventus 0-3 Milan: Rossoneri dominate in Turin

Immagine

May 9, 2021

Milan ended their Juventus Stadium taboo with a thumping 3-0 victory, ending their run of nine consecutive Serie A defeats here and sending the Bianconeri down to fifth place.

These teams went into the weekend locked together in second place with Atalanta, and just two points clear of Napoli, but both those teams already won and the pressure was on in this Champions League play-off.

Federico Chiesa returned after three games out injured and Giorgio Chiellini pushed Leonardo Bonucci to the bench, while Samu Castillejo was suspended. ................

Szczesny did not punch a free kick very far, so Brahim Diaz was able to control with his chest and cut inside to curl a stunning finish into the far top corner. Chiellini was on the line, but simply could not reach it. There was a VAR silent check for possible handball, but the front camera angle showed it was on the chest.

Juve came out fighting after the break, Donnarumma immediately getting down for a one-handed save on Rodrigo Bentancur following the Alvaro Morata back-heel flick.

VAR was called into action when Brahim Diaz had another effort charged down by Chiellini’s outstretched arm and inevitably it was a penalty. However, while Franck Kessie has an excellent conversion rate from the spot, this time Szczesny managed to palm it out from the bottom corner and keep Juve in the game. That was only the third time in his career that the Ivorian failed to convert a penalty, the second this season.

Ibrahimovic limped off with a left knee issue, while Brahim Diaz also had an injury. Szczesny had to rush off his line to smother at the feet of Hakan Calhanoglu and after a long period of Juve possession without creating genuine chances, Milan doubled their lead.

Ante Rebic placed a stunner into the top corner with the inside of the right boot from the edge of the area, as Szczesny could do nothing but watch it fly in.

The result was even heavier, as Calhanoglu floated a free kick into the box for Fikayo Tomori’s towering header, out-jumping Chiellini. This was a crucial goal, as it means Milan also now have a better head-to-head record with Juventus, so will be ahead even if they finish level on points, as it ended 3-1 for the Bianconeri at San Siro in January.

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, De Ligt, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; McKennie, Bentancur (Kulusevski 67), Rabiot, Chiesa (Dybala 79); Morata, Ronaldo

Milan: G Donnarumma; Calabria, Kjaer, Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Kessie, Bennacer (Dalot 82); Saelemaekers (Meite 82), Brahim Diaz (Krunic 70), Calhanoglu; Ibrahimovic (Rebic 66)

Sassuolo 1-3 Juventus: Veterans rescue Juve

Juventus got back on track with a crucial 3-1 win away to Sassuolo, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala hitting 100, but only after Gigi Buffon saved Domenico Berardi’s penalty.

The Bianconeri were in crisis after sliding to fifth place with a 3-0 home defeat to Milan, so Andrea Pirlo made several changes, bringing in Paulo Dybala, Arthur, Dejan Kulusevski and Gigi Buffon. Sassuolo had won five of their last six, drawing the other with Atalanta, and were closing on Roma for seventh place.

Leonardo Bonucci clattered into Giacomo Raspadori for a penalty after 15 minutes, but when Berardi stepped up, he was denied by Gigi Buffon. The 43-year-old goalkeeper only announced yesterday he is leaving Juventus and may well continue his career elsewhere, so with saves like that, it’s evident why.

Juventus took the lead instead, as Adrien Rabiot cut inside and drilled left-footed through a defender’s legs into the far bottom corner, leaving Andrea Consigli unsighted.

Traore again fired well over from a promising position, but Juve doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time with a moment of sheer class from Cristiano Ronaldo. He controlled a long ball, with his right foot flicked it through Marlon’s legs, then with his left drilled into the far bottom corner.

After a series of substitutions, Sassuolo got their way back into the game. Buffon was absolutely furious with his defenders, as Giacomo Raspadori was allowed to spring the offside trap centrally on a Manuel Locatelli pass.

However, Juve restored the two-goal cushion with a classic counter, as Kulusevski’s slide-rule pass was perfectly-timed, then Dybala delicately lobbed the goalkeeper. It was La Joya’s 100th goal in the Juventus jersey.
