Buffon: 'Azzurri are chameleons'

Gianluigi Buffon is pleased with a possible switch to a three-man defence against Uruguay. “We are chameleons.”

Italy need at least a point to progress in the World Cup on Tuesday in Natal and, with Daniele De Rossi injured, it’s reported Cesare Prandelli will move to 3-4-2-1 or 3-5-2.

“We are open to all possibilities,” said captain Buffon in a Press conference.

“One of our best qualities is that we are chameleons and I hope this versatility will help us to reach all the results we are aiming for.”

If it is 3-5-2, then there are rumours Torino striker Ciro Immobile will partner Mario Balotelli for the first time.

“It would be a novelty, with all the benefits and risks that go with that. In case this choice is made, what happens on the field will tell us if it was the right decision.

“Do I prefer working with a three-man defence? What I think is irrelevant, as we’re talking about what is best for the team and the right medicine to emerge from certain tough moments.

“The answer is in the head of the Coach, so what I prefer counts for practically nothing.

“I think we can all agree that recently we conceded too many chances and against Costa Rica we were unable to balance that with the opportunities created.

“The disappointment within us is about the second half, when we were unable to cause problems for a team that focused only on defending.”

Italy were praised in the media after beating England 2-1 with the 4-1-4-1 system, but lambasted after a similar approach lost to Costa Rica.

“I think it’s a bit excessive to go from this style being the cure to all ills and five days later it’s already old news. Decisions need to be made based on the players and the opponents, so versatility is helpful.”

Buffon astounded by recovery

The Italy captain had feared missing the entire World Cup, admits Gigi Buffon. “I never dreamed I’d recover so quickly.”

The goalkeeper sprained his ankle on the Manaus turf the night before their opening game with England, but was back for the 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica.

“It was a heavy psychological blow for me, because not even in the best case scenario did I dream that I’d recover so quickly,” he said in a Press conference.

“This put me in a good mood and frankly I really needed that.”

Much has been said during this World Cup about the Brazilian heat and humidity, as South and Central American sides appear to thrive in the conditions.

“I don’t believe in alibis, as I’ve never sought or liked them,” noted Buffon.

“The climactic conditions are difficult, almost impossible, but they are for everyone here. We have seen confirmation many teams unaccustomed to this tropical climate struggled, but that doesn’t mean we need to go looking for excuses.

“The truth is that against Costa Rica we were unable to play the same kind of football as against England, not even in short bursts.”

Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon accepts the criticism which came the Azzurri’s way following their defeat to Costa Rica – but insists they should not dwell on the setback ahead of Tuesday’s crunch clash with Uruguay.

Having won their opening Group D encounter against England, Italy expected smooth progress to the knockout phase, only to hit a hurdle with the shock 1-0 loss to the North American nation.

Nevertheless, a point against Uruguay will be enough for Cesare Prandelli’s men to advance to the last 16 and goalkeeper Buffon is keen for everyone to move one.

He said on Sunday: “It is right that there was criticism but, at this moment, we look for a swift recovery.

“We cannot afford to get into a negative mindset because it would be counter-productive. We have to respect everyone’s judgement and respond.

“We have to try to send signals of optimism by putting in a great performance. It will take many ingredients: a warm heart; a cool head and a certain belief that does not subside after one game which went wrong, especially when the matches are so close together.”

Reports have suggested Prandelli is considering switching to a 3-5-2 formation for this game, something Buffon hinted would be a risk.

“We are open to all possibilities. One of our best qualities is that we are all chameleons and I hope this versatility will help us to reach the results we are aiming for,” he added.

“It would be a novelty, with all the benefits and risks that go with that. If this choice is made what happens on the pitch will tell us if it was the right decision.”

Asked if he preferred working with a three-man defence, he said: “What I think is irrelevant. We are talking about what is best for the team.

“I think we can all agree that we conceded too many chances against Costa Rica and we were unable to balance that with the opportunities created.

“The real disappointment is that in the second half we were unable to cause problems for a team focused only on defending.”

Buffon: 'Unite for Italy!'

Gigi Buffon sent a message to fans ahead of Italy’s crunch World Cup match with Uruguay. “Leave divisions aside.”

The Azzurri need at least a point to go through into the Round of 16, while La Celeste can only qualify with a victory.

“A strong and cohesive cheer has to arrive from Italy, leaving aside the divisions that exist during the season so we can UNITE all together under the tricolore flag,” wrote Buffon on his Twitter account.

“We are there fighting on the field, you are there cheering in the stadium or in front of the television, all united for the same colours, united by our passion and united for our Italy!”

Gianluigi Buffon has branded Italy's departure from the World Cup as a "failure" after their 1-0 loss to Uruguay in Group D.

Diego Godin's 81st-minute header was enough for la Celeste to seal the victory required to take them through to the next round in a tempestuous encounter that saw Claudio Marchisio sent off and Luis Suarez accused of biting Giorgio Chiellini.

However Buffon, reflecting on Italy's failure to reach the knockout stages for the second World Cup in succession, was critical of the manner in which his side departed the tournament.

"It's a very sad day for us as a group, as individual players and as a nation," the 36-year-old told Sky Italia.

"It was a failure and it is useless to deny it or go around it. We went out and deservedly so."

Italy were hoping to make amends for going without a win in the 2010 World Cup, where they finished behind Paraguay, Slovakia and New Zealand in Group F, and Buffon was disheartened by their inability to build on creditable Euro 2012 and Confederations Cup campaigns.

"After 2010 there were two competitions in which we performed well," he continued.

"We had a good start and let expectations maybe get too high, and at the end we struggled against the harsh reality of playing two games in which we created little and failed to score."

Buffon: 'Same old faces deliver'

Gigi Buffon slammed those calling for a generational shift. “You have to judge people on what they are doing, not what they could potentially do.”

The Italy and Juventus captain spoke to the Corriere della Sera newspaper about the dire first round World Cup exit in Brazil.

“Before the World Cup we knew we weren’t the best, but still thought that we were mature and reliable enough to reach the Last 16, at the very least.

“The initial victory over England gave us false hope. Before this World Cup Italy were a team appreciated for their entertaining football, but here we looked like a side without ideas.

“That is in no way a criticism of the Coach. Cesare Prandelli is a good man and a great tactician, so I am sorry he resigned. He brought the fans closer to the Nazionale with patience, sentiment and hard work. He won that challenge.

“The idea of adopting a new style of playing with the men at his disposal was right. In three competitions, we twice finished on the podium. The blame in a huge debacle like this is to be spread out between everyone. No single person was at fault, but everyone was.”

Straight after the defeat to Uruguay, Buffon was highly critical of the young players who didn’t step up, appearing to point the finger in particular at Mario Balotelli.

“I have never been afraid to express myself,” the goalkeeper told the Corriere della Sera. “Sometimes opinions burst out of me like sneezes.

“I expressed an idea that I am still convinced of now, but in 20 years of my career I’ve never attacked a teammate. Imagine if I could’ve done that in such a moment. Besides, Balotelli is 24, so he’s certainly not a young player.

“When I was 24 I hated people acting like big brothers or extra fathers with me. I have a father, a mother and two sisters already. So Balotelli needs no advice from me, he needs to listen to his family. If I had something to say to him, I’d do it directly.

“I often hear ironic comments on the ages of Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi, Andrea Barzagli and also Buffon. Idle chatter passes by and the facts remain on the field: the players who break their bones for the cause are always the same ones, every time.

“Those who tell us to think carefully if we want to continue should look at who is still the focal point of this Nazionale. You have to judge people on what they are doing, not what they could potentially do. This is how you build men, otherwise you risk looking like an idiot.

“Often youngsters have so much responsibility and expectation heaped upon them, but are fragile underneath. I’ve heard since 2010 that this Italy side is old. If you are young and have the talent to become a champion, you don’t play for the Nazionale after three or four games. You have to earn your stripes in Serie A.

“I played for the Nazionale two years after my Serie A debut and realised it was an honour and not an easy burden to shoulder. Now after three good performances a player gets into the squad and takes everything for granted.

“I agree with what De Rossi said. In these competitions it is your strength of character as a man that makes the difference.”

Buffon may well have been referring to Mattia Destro, who was asked to accompany the Italy squad to Brazil as an alternate to the list of 23 in case of injury, but told Prandelli he’d “have to think about it.”

Meanwhile, Pirlo said he’s prepared to reconsider international retirement if the new Coach wants him in the side.

“If he is made to feel important, then Pirlo can still be fundamental,” concluded Buffon. “Someone of his talent doesn’t deserve to end this career with a failed World Cup.”

Did Cassano blame Buffon?

It’s reported Antonio Cassano turned on Gigi Buffon and the Italy ‘senators’ after their World Cup exit.

According to La Repubblica, the Parma man stood with the younger players and pinned the blame on the old guard.

“We only won when you weren’t on the pitch,” Cassano is alleged to have told captain Buffon on the flight home from Brazil.

The goalkeeper was injured for the 2-1 victory against England, as Salvatore Sirigu impressed in his place.

La Repubblica also claims FantAntonio complained that Buffon and Daniele De Rossi “want to make all the decisions.”

It’s reported Buffon threatened to “give Cassano a slap” if he continued his protests.

However, in today’s interview with the Corriere della Sera, Buffon insisted Cassano did “nothing out of the ordinary.

“I don’t understand this desire from the media to create controversy.”

Buffon agrees Juve renewal

Reports are that Gianluigi Buffon has all but signed off on a contract extension with Juventus, that could commit him until June 2017.

The 36-year-old has been seen recently as in prospective talks with the Bianconeri over his future, with his current deal due to expire at the end of June 2015.

The Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport today are running the line that an agreement has been reached on a contract renewal and that all that it awaits before confirmation is the Italy captain’s signature.

However, the two publications differ slightly in their interpretation of the deal - Turin-based Tuttosport suggested that Buffon has agreed to a one-year extension to June 2016, with the option in place to then commit to June 2017.

The Corriere dello Sport believe, though, that the player still has to decide between signing to such an equation, or agreeing a deal outright to June 2017.

Buffon signed for Juventus in 2001 and his then reported €45m fee has him still listed as the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

Juve have three to replace Buffon

Whilst Juventus are due to renew Gigi Buffon’s contract, they are also reportedly eyeing three players to one day potentially replace him.

No 1 at the club since his 2001 summer arrival, Buffon is speculated as on the verge of committing to a new contract in Turin to tie him down until perhaps June 2017.

Tuttosport, who are leading those suggestions, have also run through the club’s intentions further down the line, when the now 36-year-old eventually does hang up his gloves.

It is understood that they Bianconeri have signposted three potential candidates to step in between the sticks at Juventus Stadium.

First up is believed to be the highly rated Jan Oblak, Benfica’s 21-year-old Slovnian ‘keeper, who reportedly has a contract in place until June 2018, a buyout clause of €20m and interest already from the likes of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Valencia.

A cheaper second option that Juve have is Nicola Leali, on their books already and reportedly in line this year for a run in Serie A.

After two years on loan in Serie B, the 21-year-old is seen as attracting the interest of Cesena and Empoli, to provide him with a run in the top-flight that Juventus reportedly are keen for him to taste as part of his development.

Meanwhile, the third name in the club’s mind to maybe one day replace Buffon is Simone Scuffet, Udinese’s highly-rated 18-year-old, who has just signed a new five-year deal with the Zebrette.

Buffon: 'Conte bolt from the blue'

Juventus captain Gigi Buffon admits Antonio Conte quitting two days into pre-season training is “a bolt from the blue.”

The announcement was made this evening with Conte recording a video message on the club’s official website, even though pre-season training only began yesterday.

“It was an unexpected decision, a bolt from the blue,” said Buffon at a Press conference that had already been organised for the club he owns shares in – Carrarese.

“Seeing the words used and the tone of the messages, we can see both the Coach and club reached this decision by mutual consent without any type of anger.

“Probably it is something that matured over time and had been brewing for a while until it reached its epilogue today.

“The reason? I don’t know, as I haven’t spoken to him, though I will do as soon as possible. When you reach decisions like this, the only reason can be you no longer want to continue this type of work.”

Conte had a contract until June 30 2015, but renewal talks faltered and the sudden decision to terminate by mutual consent occurred very quickly, considering pre-season training only began on Monday.

“Maybe something happened over the last few days that destabilised the situation,” mused Buffon.

“Juventus lose a great deal, because it’s pointless denying what our Coach truly brings to the team and how much of the credit he deserves for the last three years.

“It is true that over these years we have all matured, so we have a solid club and directors who will be able to cover this serious loss.

“We players also need to do everything we can to find that sense of responsibility and prove we can do it too. It is important to send that signal.”

Among the candidates to replace Conte are Luciano Spalletti, Massimiliano Allegri and Roberto Mancini.

“It is not Year Zero, as over the three years we have all matured, thanks also to the Coach and club. It is exciting.

“Am I worried? We don’t know who will arrive, so I look to the present and say we have lost a wonderful Coach, an extra value, but the fundamental players remain and a solid club that will be able to work towards a great Juventus.

“These are the certainties the fans should rely on and relax knowing they are there.”

Buffon was asked whether Conte would now become the new Italy Coach, replacing Cesare Prandelli after the dismal World Cup.

“I am certainly not surprised by your fervid fantasies, in fact I have to smile because you know your jobs.

“I think the Coach is not thinking about the future, but in a very calm and relaxed manner is discussing his irrevocable decision.

“Will he reconsider? I really doubt it, as when official statements with video messages are released, that’s pretty much it.”

Buffon: Allegri one of the group

Gianluigi Buffon sees Massimiliano Allegri as ‘one of the group’ at Juventus, whilst he reflects again on heartache suffered with Italy.

The goalkeeper is working under new management this pre-season following Antonio Conte’s surprise summer exit and has considered the changes so far noticed.

“Everyone has their own character. There is no formula that guarantees victory, otherwise it would have been patented,” Buffon has considered in today’s edition of La Stampa.

“There is the sergeant like Louis van Gaal and then there’s those like Carlo Ancelotti, who look for direct contact, and they both know how to achieve success.

“Which style do I prefer? I was pleased with both approaches because I received an education that helped me to respect authority.

“It is up to the players to figure out how to interact with the Coach so as to give their best. Ancelotti said that the Coach must be one of the group, not above it. Allegri is like this and it is a quality that I like.

“If the player is able to give something more, then they do so in certain situations.

“There have been several changes, but after a fantastic journey with the same men in command, a change can also be physiological.

“Concerns over Allegri’s relationship with Andrea Pirlo? I have never understood these - even if there were problems, between men these are resolved in a few words, it’s just a joke.”

Discussion remains on Juve’s ambitions heading into the new season, particularly in the Champions League.

“Investments play their part, but in the last two years Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid have reached the final.

“Surprises do happen, although it is strange to define Juventus like this.”

Roma are seen as Juve’s key competitors for the Scudetto, alongside Napoli.

“Roma? After last year they begin with enthusiasm and awareness of being competitive and having strengthened. At the start they are our equals.”

Meanwhile, Conte has been linked with taking on the vacancy with the national team.

“He would have to change the way he works because he would not have time to be so manic, but it would be quite a challenge.”

Buffon also had his say on the controversy surrounding prospective FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio, who in the run-up to this month’s election has faced pressure over racist and sexist comments released.

“The ‘banana’ phrase was and remains unfortunate, then it has been manipulated, but it will not be decisive. The future of the game depends on radical change, on programmes that are much more precise.

“Just for the fact there is an atmosphere like this makes it a half-defeat, let’s see if before August 11 [when the presidential election is held] it becomes a full one.

“If nothing changes from here to the 11th then we all have to feel part of the blame - players, journalists and anyone who gravitates around football. To remove some from their positions and change certain relations of power that are now exhausted cannot be so complicated.

“In politics they are trying and in sport they can too. The new President of CONI has ideas and presents himself as a reformist. Whoever is elected should have the same effect in conveying a sense of responsibility to those who insist on fighting for its interest.”

Tavecchio and Demetrio Albertini are standing for President as part of the fallout from the World Cup campaign, which saw Giancarlo Abete and Cesare Prandelli resign their positions.

“I am not one to drench my shirt in tears, I drench it in my soul. In Brazil, we lost everything, we had the opportunity to make our country proud during a difficult moment and we were eliminated in a manner so unseemly.

“I do not know the reasons for a debacle like this but I agree with De Rossi - you win with men and not with figurines.

“My words were not referring to an individual. We do not need a scapegoat. What bothers me is the conditioning of certain media - they exalt the youngster before they have done something concrete in their career.

“Pirlo is the greatest in the world and he should have to stay at home? The fanfare around some names, perhaps it is to drive up their price tag.”

Allegri is like Ancelotti, says Buffon

The Juventus skipper believes the two take a similar approach to man management
and is taking Champions League inspiration from Dortmund and Atletico.

Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon has compared the approach of new coach Massimiliano Allegri to former boss Carlo Ancelotti.

The 46-year-old took over from Antonio Conte this summer and the veteran goalkeeper has praised the ex-Milan boss for his consensual manner with the players.

"Everyone has their own character," he told La Stampa. "There is no formula that guarantees victory, otherwise it would have been patented.

"There is the sergeant like Louis van Gaal and then there's those like Carlo Ancelotti, who look for direct contact, and they both know how to achieve success.

"Which style do I prefer? I was pleased with both approaches because I received an education that helped me to respect authority.

Buffon went on to say that his team-mates are taking inspiration from Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid, who reached the last two Champions League finals, as they plan an assault of their own on Europe.

"In the past two years Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid have reached the final," he added. "Surprises do happen, although it is strange to define Juventus like this."

The 36-year-old also considered Juve's main contenders in the league for the upcoming season and believes Roma's success in the previous campaign marks them as the biggest threat.

Buffon: 'Del Piero the Juve symbol'

Gigi Buffon assures Alessandro Del Piero “will always be the symbol of Juventus” after the A-League All-Stars game.

Del Piero said goodbye to Sydney FC and the A-League in today’s exhibition match, which was won 3-2 by the Bianconeri.

“Del Piero will always be the symbol of Juventus,” Buffon told reporters in Australia.

“Alex has had a unique and extraordinary career. I think he will always be representative of the Bianconeri.

“It was a good game and it’s always wonderful to see so many fans come to see us in Australia.

“Although we had to suffer for it, we were able to win in the end.”

Juve were trailing twice, but two goals in the final minutes from Paul Pogba and Simone Pepe turned it around.

There had been reports Del Piero would play a few minutes in the Juventus jersey today, but that did not prove to be the case.

Buffon: League won't be an easy ride

Gianluigi Buffon has admitted that Roma and Napoli won’t give Juventus an ‘easy ride’ this season.

The Bianconeri cantered to a third-successive title last time out breaking the 100-point total for the first time.

But the goalkeeper has insisted that their nearest rivals will be up for the challenge in the upcoming campaign.

“There will be plenty of competition this year and Roma and Napoli won't give us an easy ride,” he told reporters in Singapore.

The veteran shot-stopper then commented on his ambition to win the Champions League.

“Winning the Champions League would represent the icing on the cake for my career. I'll give it my best shot.”

boss again and says all Italians should be delighted with his appointment.

Gianluigi Buffon has hailed the appointment of Antonio Conte as Italy coach and feels the 45-year-old will bring a winning mentality to the Azzurri set-up.

The former Juventus boss left Turin this summer after three Serie A-winning seasons with the Old Lady and was handed the national team job following Cesare Prandelli's resignation.

Buffon believes that every football fan in Italy should be delighted to have Conte in charge of their country.

"He will be very good for both the footballing movement and also for individuals in the national team," he told La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport.

"He is a natural fundamentalist, but he also has the intelligence and sensitivity to understand and adapt to situations that are not those of a club.

"Antonio is a winner as a coach and as a character. It's normal that fans of Juventus' rivals are bitter against him. But I'm sure 95 per cent of Italians would like to have him coach their team and the same is true for the national team."

Buffon went on to say that he wants to represent his country at the next World Cup in 2018, by which time he will be 40 years of age.

"If I can carry on until 40 and make it to a sixth World Cup, that would really be amazing. No one has ever made six World Cups before.

"It's better not to think about this because these four years will be very hard."

Carlo Tavecchio was appointed president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) despite courting controversy recently for alleged racism, but Buffon feels he will perform his new role well.

"I have nothing disagreeable to say - I know him. I think that, at 71, he has great experience on his side. Now we need to find cohesion, unity of purpose."

Buffon: No contract problems

Gigi Buffon says there are no problems with Juventus over contract negotiations, nor issues to see between Max Allegri and Andrea Pirlo.

The goalkeeper’s current deal with the Old Lady expires in June 2015, but it is believed that he is in continued negotiations over an extension.

Talking to Tuttosport on the matter, the 36-year-old admitted that a year-by-year renewal is up for consideration.

“Sure. It is a form of respect for the club but also for me,” Buffon has responded in a lengthy interview released today.

“There will be no problems. Contracts for life have already been signed in the past. I am 36. And when one looks back on a career like mine, they should have sensitivity and respect for its history.

“I have already had 14 seasons at Juve. So it would be doubly nice to continue to move forward together, truly if the club will agree.

“Between us we have created such a relationship of mutual trust that no problems will come from it.

“The problems, if any, will arise when I no longer reach a certain level of performance.”

Buffon was asked if he has considered moving into management once he retires from playing.

“Now it is stupid and foolish to talk of this. The first thing I will do when I quit playing is dedicate time to myself.

“That is to further my studies - for my training and for future work. Sometimes I cannot wait to retire, so great is the urgency I feel inside. An urgency of life.

“Of course, for now I am happy to defer this question, because I have a more important mission to fulfil. That is to honour my career and my commitment to Juve…”

Juve and Italy’s captain, who also considered Antonio Conte’s appointment as Italy Coach and Massimiliano Allegri’s adaptation with the Bianconeri, was asked about the latter’s relationship with Andrea Pirlo.

“They are always laughing and joking? And how. We see it all. They are always in great harmony. It’s true, they are often joking. Without hesitation, without malice.

“They are two very smart people. Maybe at a certain point in their careers they had different ideas. Some differences.

“And that may be so. But then things go on. They understand situations. There is no problem, in short.”

‘Buffon to play for a long time’

Gianluigi Buffon is not yet near retirement, says his agent, who also looks to reassure over contract talks with Juventus.

The 36-year-old has been reported for a number of months as set for negotiations with the Old Lady over a new deal, yet nothing has materialised as of yet.

Talk has also arrived surrounding the player’s intentions with regards to retirement and on both matters his representative has now commented.

“Calm, you have all seen the state Buffon is in, he will play on for a long time,” Silvano Martina has told Calciomercato.it.

“The contract is due to expire next June, that is true, but the words of Marotta seem very clear in this regard.

“There is no rush for the renewal - for this we have not yet set a date for a meeting.

“Let the transfer market finish and the season begin, then we will see.

“It will really take two minutes to sign a new agreement.”

Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon was pleased with his side’s opening day victory over Chievo, but still feels that there is room for improvement.

The veteran goalkeeper, who had little to do for large spells of the game nonetheless pulled off some smart saves to ensure that Massimiliano Allegri’s side returned to Turin with all three points thanks to a 1-0 win.

“Despite the numerous absences, we still managed to be well prepared,” he stated to Sky Sports following the match.

“But, as it was our first game, it’s only natural to take a while to get into things. We still want to win and continue to impress [like we did last season].

“The difficult thing will be to keep up this level of intensity in every game.”

The long-serving Bianconeri shot-stopper also offered some thoughts on the team’s rivals for the Scudetto this season.

“Roma last season was our number one rival, and it will be the same this season. However, other teams, like Napoli, Inter, and [AC] Milan can also pose a challenge.”

Buffon will now turn his attention to international duty as the Azzurri prepare to take on the Netherlands in a friendly before their EURO 2016 qualifying campaign.

Buffon: Conte a perfectionist

Gigi Buffon considers Antonio Conte the right man at the right time for Italy, and says work is similar to how it was at Juventus.

The 45-year-old is overseeing a first week of work with the Azzurri squad since taking over on the bench in place of Cesare Prandelli.

For Italy’s captain, who up until the start of pre-season was working with Conte at Juventus, the transition is going well.

“The Coach is a perfectionist, a Coach and a man who believes in discipline and rules,” Buffon has told reporters in Florence, in picking up the 2014 Nereo Rocco Award.

“In a time in history like this I think he was the only one who in a short time could have the strength to drag us back up.

“I see him as we saw him at Juve - very clear ideas, transmitting concepts without any possibility of being misunderstood.

“I believe that our players need this type of guidance. I see him as really well, calm, energetic, at the right place.”

Buffon: 'Exactly the same Conte'

Gigi Buffon says Antonio Conte “is exactly the same” Coach for Italy as Juventus and has high hopes for Simone Zaza.

The captain spoke at a Press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Norway, as Conte made his debut on the Azzurri bench with a 2-0 friendly victory over Holland.

“It was a great performance and in some respects an unexpected one, considering we came off Costa Rica and Uruguay at the World Cup,” said Buffon.

“We faced a team in a friendly that after 10 minutes were a man and two goals down. It was a good test of our concentration, especially as in recent years our approach to friendlies has been dangerous. We can say we did well.

“The World Cup exit was something shocking and therefore any post-match reaction could’ve gained more importance than it was meant to.

“Having said that, I didn’t say anything that wasn’t founded in facts. It wasn’t a generational shift, but a way of evaluating players by real meritocracy. In the Nazionale you need the best players, regardless of their age.”

Cesare Prandelli resigned after that debacle in Brazil and Conte took over, having won three consecutive Serie A titles at Juventus.

“There are many analogies with his first day at Juve and at the Nazionale,” agreed Buffon.

“He is the same Conte who stayed for three years and he continues to express his concepts of football in a way that makes him unique and special.

“There are eras that have to end, or not give the same results or the same enthusiasm they did before. If the Coach made that decision, it’s because he realised something had changed and we were going into more difficulties.

“I repeat with great strength that if we have Conte here, it’s because he has absolute conviction we can achieve something extraordinary. He is so mature and such a professional that he won’t go into an adventure unless he believes in it 100 per cent.”

Zaza and Ciro Immobile impressed in their first game together against Holland and could also be used in Norway on Tuesday.

“For those of us who have represented Italy for many years it is a pleasure to see the humility and hard work the young players put in, even when they ask you advice.

“Often young people today think they know it all, don’t need any advice or help. And yet it is good for them to stretch themselves. We’ve been there, De Rossi, Pirlo and Chiellini, when we were young.

“I am not surprised by Zaza’s success, as I’ve always really liked him as a player, even when facing him as an opponent.

“I think only we are capable of ruining a talent like this, so we have to look after him as much as possible over two or three World Cups or Euros.”

Buffon was asked about the potential rules to clamp down on foreign imports in Serie A, B and Lega Pro.

“It’s not a question of quantity, but quality. There are debates on the quality of someone playing in the place of an Italian. That is bad for our football if we cannot allow new talent to flourish.

“As for reforms, I think something has to be changed. If we horribly failed in two consecutive World Cups and do not have that pool of talent we had in the past, it means something is wrong.

“I think we should help the maturation of Italian talents in the youth academies, putting some limitations on who to play in the starting XI.

Buffon respects Scandinavian sides

Italy captain Gigi Buffon has “the utmost respect for Norway” and Juventus Champions League opponents Malmo.

The Azzurri travel to Norway for Tuesday’s Euro 2016 qualifier, then the Bianconeri also travel to Scandinavia against the Swedes.

“There is a lot of tradition there,” said Buffon in a Press conference.

“They are very physical teams whose greatest strength is in the air, always creating a lot of problems for us.

“In recent years football has become more uniform, so the Scandinavian teams play like the rest of Europe. Norway no longer have only giant centre-forwards, but quick young strikers.

“There is a lot of respect for them, as we cannot afford to face any team in a superficial manner.”

Giorgio Chiellini is out of the Norway game with a calf injury and had been ready to stay with the Italy squad, but today was sent back to Turin by the Juve doctors.

“Is it causing a problem? No, just look at the code that was in place before: any time a player is injured and cannot play, he returns to his club.”

Buffon was told he is popular in Norway, particularly for the passion he puts into the national anthem.

“Many people have pointed out the way I sing the anthem. What I transmit to others at that moment is not planned or studied.

“I am quite simply honoured to represent my country, especially as I know the history of my country and am emotionally involved in it.”

Buffon: 'No Balotelli problem'

Gigi Buffon denied the Italy senators have “a problem” with Mario Balotelli, but explained his view on self-discipline.

The Italy and Juventus captain held a Press conference today ahead of Tuesday’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway.

Balotelli was surprisingly dropped for Antonio Conte’s first Italy squad, though he was also suspended against the Norwegians.

“We are players and Mario is our teammate,” said the goalkeeper. “We don’t have a problem with him.

“We are not so presumptuous to think we can teach someone how to act or how to live, because it’s not as if we are 50 years older.

“I think there is a Coach and he decides what is best for the group. It is not our job to comment on who gets called up.”

When asked about why the Italy squad needed a tough Coach like Conte in charge, Buffon looked on a wider scale.

“The psychology of man and not just players could get us talking for hours. I am convinced that the moment a man or player is given too much freedom, that man will mistake it for a licence to do whatever he wants, so consequently either fails or doesn’t know how to use it.

“I think players, seeing as they are still young, do not have self-discipline. It is inevitable that some Coaches will push them from the start and that probably helps.

“If we think of all the ‘hard men’ of football, like Capello and Van Gaal, then they spent a lot and still won.

“It is not the only path to victory, but it really helps. On the other hand, you have Carlo Ancelotti, who if it came to being a hard man would never win at all.

“In terms of tactics, Conte and Arrigo Sacchi are the most focused on tactics. It is their credo and if the results don’t come, you can’t just change approach.

Azzurri: 'No harm in Lotito presence'

Gigi Buffon and team manager Gabriele Oriali denied Italy players “complained” about Claudio Lotito’s presence.

The Lazio President accompanied the squad to Bari for Thursday’s 2-0 friendly win over the Netherlands and reportedly irritated the players by being ever-present at the side of FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio.

“All I can say is that the locker room is sacred, so only people with my authorisation or that of Antonio Conte can come in. I did not receive requests to enter,” Oriali told reporters today.

“I didn’t receive complaints from any players on the issue either. We are all concentrated on what we have to do, which is a lot.”

Buffon was also asked about the Lotito story, which was on the front pages of all three major sports newspapers today.

“I can say that, as a player, I have seen Lotito in many other events. Most recently he was at the Italy-Argentina friendly, or at Euro 2008. It’s not a surprise.

“He is not someone who comes into the locker room. If a person is close to the squad and represents the institutions, I don’t see what harm it can do.”

Buffon 'no rush' for Juve contract

Gigi Buffon is in negotiations with Juventus for a contract extension, said his agent, but “there’s no rush.”

The goalkeeper’s current deal is set to expire at the end of this season and there has been talk of a new agreement until June 2017 – by which time he will be 38 years old.

“There is no rush, nor any short-term agreements made,” representative Silvano Martina told Calcionews24.com.

“We have an excellent rapport with Juventus, so there will be no problems. Right now I can’t talk about details, as it’s still too early.

“Buffon is a key figure at Juventus and still the best goalkeeper in the world.”

Martina was asked whether the shot-stopper will join the club hierarchy as a director after he hangs up his gloves.

“These are questions you should ask him. I don’t know, but right now he wants to play.”

Buffon: 'Juve top eight in Europe'

Gigi Buffon said Max Allegri is “less maniacal” than Antonio Conte, but Juventus “can be in Europe’s top eight clubs.”

The goalkeeper spoke to Sky Sport Italia after a 2-0 victory over Malmo, the first time they’ve won their Champions League opener since 2008.

“This Juve can be in Europe’s top eight clubs. In us there is the awareness we can play a good Champions League campaign, even if we then have to translate that confidence on to the field.”

So far new Coach Allegri has done remarkably well at the helm, winning all three competitive matches between Serie A and Europe.

“When we have situations like this, everyone is aware that we’re starting from scratch. We all must prove that we deserve the responsibility of being Champions of Italy and that we can do it again.

“This is our hope, but we know it will be even more difficult than in other years, when we managed to make our success look easy.

“Allegri knows his tactics, but also the psychology of the group. He is less maniacal about details than Conte, but still very attentive and pernickety. After so many years of being under pressure, his methods are useful for giving us more responsibility.

“On the pitch he wants us to control the tempo at some stages to get our breath back, whereas in the past we were always bombing forward.”

Allegri will face his former club on Saturday at San Siro when Juventus take on joint Serie A leaders Milan and Buffon’s ex-teammate Pippo Inzaghi.

“This Milan side is bubbly. Inzaghi is a great Coach and is transmitting the same characteristics to his team that he had as a player.

“They engage in attacking football and have many experienced players with great quality who want to make up for last year.

“Fernando Torres is a great signing for them. He wants to get back on track and can only do well in Italy.”
