Time for Marrone to grow up

What to do with Luca Marrone is a question that Juventus
will have to answer this summer. Antonio Labbate writes.

Jun 29, 2013

“I certainly won’t be on the move this month. Then, in June, we’ll evaluate the situation again. I’ve spoken with the Coach and with the club. We all believe that it is better for me to play 10 games for a big outfit like Juventus instead of 30 for another team. Staying here will help me to grow.”

That was Luca Marrone committing his future to the Bianconeri in January. Six months on, and at the end of a campaign where he did indeed make 10 Serie A appearances, it’s time to consider the biggest decision of his career to date.

Marrone can’t afford to spend another campaign on the periphery in Turin. Learning the tricks of the trade from more established teammates in training is one thing, but playing week in and week out is another. The player and the club seem to have acknowledged as much. A summer move is, thus, on the horizon.

The Italian Under-21 international, whose European Championship was cruelly ended by an injury sustained in the opening victory over England, has no shortage of admirers. However, he and Juventus will have to choose his next destination wisely.

At this stage it seems unlikely, although not impossible, that the champions will sell him outright. A loan or a co-ownership are subsequently options for La Signora. The loan is the safest ploy for the club in terms of making sure that the player returns to base if that is their desire. Yet the co-ownership solution, despite what happened with Ciro Immobile in the last campaign at Genoa, could arguably deliver the biggest return.

If you offer a share of a player’s contract, it is in the interests of the buying party to regularly play that individual in the hope that he develops. The tactic worked with Sebastian Giovinco and Parma. The fact Juventus had to spend €11m to buy back a forward they had previously owned is often cited as a failing. But they got €3m from Parma in the first place and the Atomic Ant now, even after his problematic 2012-13, is a better player than when he left and is today comfortably valued at over €10m.

What Marrone and Juventus need is a club who can guarantee the ex-Siena loanee regular first team football because he’s already in a race against time. Italian football worryingly considers Marrone as a youngster, but he’s 23 and, if he indeed is as good as his potential alludes, then he can ill afford to waste another campaign. His Serie A career to date? Just 15 appearances.

There is a complication however. Simply finding Marrone a new home will not be enough, deciding on a role for him is also a necessity. While versatility is an appealing trait, it can also endanger development in one particular position. Before the start of last season, Marrone was very much a central midfielder with playmaker potential. That was until he was transformed into a centre-back by Antonio Conte.

Hit by a defensive shortage in pre-season, Conte, who also worked with him in Tuscany, needed a player with good feet as an alternative to Leonardo Bonucci in the middle of the back-three. Marrone was the chosen one and it became evident why.

“I felt comfortable in the role,” he said last term. “But the important thing is that you play at Juventus, not what position you play. I was used to a midfield berth, but now I can play elsewhere and this will be good for my experience.”

Marrone was used at the back in nine of his 10 League appearances in the past campaign. In the interests of his own personal growth, a decision needs to be made on what he wants to be when he grows up. Resuming his career as a central midfielder perhaps makes more sense, especially as there are doubts regarding his suitability in a flat back-four should Juventus one day revert to a rear-guard of that configuration.

“I certainly hope to play more regularly,” Marrone stated while in Israel with the Azzurrini when asked about 2013-14. “I’ll evaluate all of the offers that I get. Training is of use up to a certain point, but games are the real exam for a player. Playing consistently would be important. And, who knows, I could have a good season elsewhere and then return to Turin.”

That scenario would be very neat and has to be a consideration the club are seriously thinking about. The last 12 months have shown that Marrone would struggle to get into the best midfield in Italy, but, sooner or later, La Signora will lose the 34-year-old Andrea Pirlo. Now few are proclaiming Marrone to be his heir, but at a time when Marco Verratti’s agent is constantly reminding us that his client is too expensive for Italian clubs, Luca is a home grown option that must be evaluated – even if it means initially waving goodbye or selling 50 per cent of his contract.

Atalanta want Marrone - report

Jul 16, 2013

Atalanta are looking to make a move for perennial Juventus substitute Luca Marrone, reports have claimed.

Sky Sport Italia believe that La Dea are hoping to lure the 23-year-old to Bergamo, and will offer the midfielder regular first-team football.

Marrone played just 10 League games for the Bianconeri last term, and is seemingly not in Antonio Conte’s plans for next term.

As such, Stefano Colatunono’s men could make a move, likely to be a year-loan loan with an outright option.

Juve to now keep Marrone?

Jul 17, 2012

Italian champions Juventus have made Luca Marrone unavailable for transfer, report Sky Sport Italia.

The Italian Under-21 international was set to be released this summer, on loan or in a co-ownership agreement.

However, it is now being claimed that boss Antonio Conte has asked the club to keep him following the sale of Emanuele Giaccherini to Sunderland.

The 23-year-old has only appeared in 13 League games for the Old Lady over the past two campaigns.

Marrone was used as a centre-back last term by Conte, but he may be transformed back into his natural central midfield role after the signing of stopper Angelo Ogbonna from Juventus.

The former Siena player has been linked with the likes of Atalanta, Inter, Parma and Fiorentina this summer.

Everton miss out on Marrone

Aug 1, 2013

Everton have failed in a bid to sign Luca Marrone on loan from Italian Serie A champions Juventus.

Sky Sport Italia claim that the Premiership side wanted to take the now former Under-21 international on a temporary basis until the summer of 2014.

The Old Lady apparently informed the Liverpool-based outfit that they are only willing to discuss a €10m sale for the midfielder.

The 23-year-old, who can also be used as a centre-back, has scored one goal in 15 Serie A games for the Bianconeri.

Everton in talks for Marrone?

Aug 8, 2013

Reports in the British Press have claimed that Everton are targeting Juventus midfielder Luca Marrone.

The Sun believe that Roberto Martinez has highlighted the Bianconeri man as the ideal replacement for Marouane Fellaini.

The Belgium is reportedly on his way to Manchester United, reuniting with former Coach David Moyes at Old Trafford.

And the tabloid has insisted that the Toffees are already in talks with the Old Lady over a potential move for the 23-year-old.

Marrone was used sparingly by Antonio Conte last term, playing in just 10 League games.

Monaco now in for Marrone

Aug 22, 2013

French Ligue 1 outfit Monaco have stepped forward as a possible contender to sign Luca Marrone from Juventus.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Juve sporting director Fabio Paratici has held initial talks with representatives of the Principality outfit.

http://markting10.nl/

Marrone, 23, was expected to leave Turin in some form this summer after appearing in just 15 League games for the club over the last two seasons.

Juve are understood to value the central midfielder at around the €10m figure, although a loan or a co-ownership move has been touted as well.

Marrone, now a former Italian Under-21 international, was mainly used as a centre-back by boss Antonio Conte last term.

A variety of Italian clubs, as well as Everton, have been paired with the former Siena player over the last two months.

Juve searching for Marrone solution

Aug 27, 2013

Juventus director general Beppe Marotta has confirmed they are trying to find Luca Marrone a new club.

The central midfielder, 23, is rated highly by boss Antonio Conte in Turin, but he isn’t guaranteed playing time at the Juventus Stadium.

http://markting10.nl/

“Marrone has the need and desire to play with regularity in another team,” the transfer official told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ll have to see what the best destination is for him before the market closes, but right now I can’t tell you where that will be.”

The Italian champions reportedly value the player, one goal in 15 Serie A games for the Bianconeri, at around the €10m mark.

He’s been linked with the likes of Inter, Fiorentina, Parma, Everton and Monaco this summer. Cagliari became the latest club to be paired with him yesterday.

Marrone Sr has faith in Juve

Aug 29, 2013

The father of Luca Marrone is confident Juventus will make the right decision when it comes to the future of his son.

The midfielder is expected to leave Turin before the transfer window closes in favour of joining a club who can offer him more regular playing time.

http://markting10.nl/

“We’ll patiently wait for Juventus to make a decision,” Enzo Marrone told Tutto Juve when asked about the 23-year-old.

“I saw him over the weekend, but we didn’t talk about the transfer market. We obviously know that he is wanted by a number of sides, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

“Juventus will know what to do, what is best for Luca and his growth as a player – no matter whether he stays or goes.”

The now former Italian Under-21 international, one goal in 15 Serie A games for the Old Lady, has been linked with the likes of Inter, Fiorentina, Parma, Everton, Monaco and Cagliari this summer.

Sassuolo wrap up Marrone deal

Sep 2, 2013

Sassuolo will today confirm the signing of Luca Marrone from Juventus on a co-ownership agreement.

The midfielder, who was used as a defender last term by Antonio Conte in Turin, put pen to paper on a contract last night.

http://markting10.nl/

It is understood that the 23-year-old, one goal in 15 Serie A games for the Bianconeri, has cost the newly promoted outfit a fee in the region of €3.5m.

Juventus and Sassuolo are also still in transfer discussions regarding Domenico Berardi.

The Turin giants could sign a 50 per cent share in the 19-year-old attacker, but allow him to remain with the Neroverdi for this term.

Marrone returns to midfield

Sep 4, 2013

New Sassuolo signing Luca Marrone wants to resume his career as a midfielder after being used in defence at Juventus last term.

The 23-year-old has joined the Neroverdi after the latter signed 50 per cent of his contract from the Turin giants for a fee of €4.5m.

http://markting10.nl/

“If I have to be honest, the role I prefer is playing in front of the defence,” the former Italian Under-21 international commented after his experiences in a back-three in 2012-13.

“I want to become an important part of this team and finally be able to demonstrate my worth,” he continued.

“I thank the club for wanting me so much. My objective is to play with the regularity I did not have at Juventus.”

Marrone has gone from targeting the championship with the Old Lady to fighting for survival with the newly promoted club.

“We haven’t started the season on the right foot, but I’m certain the victories will arrive. We’ll know how to get some satisfaction.”

Sassuolo lost 2-0 at Torino in Week 1, while they were thumped 4-1 at home by Livorno at the weekend.

OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL: Federico Peluso sold
to Sassuolo, Luca Marrone bought outright

Jul 3, 2014

Just like we all expected to happen this summer, Juventus are keeping that pipeline to Sassuolo going strong. There's Domenico Berardi and Simone Zaza. A few others along the way, too.

Chalk up another couple of Juventus-Sassuolo moves, guys and gals.

Juventus announced a pair of deals with Sassuolo on Thursday. The first being that homegrown midfielder and sometimes central defender Luca Marrone was bought outright after he — along with Berardi — had his co-ownership deals extended two weeks ago. The second sees backup defender Federico Peluso head to Sassuolo on a permanent basis for a transfer fee of €4.5 million.

The details, from juventus.com:

Juventus Football Club and U.S. Sassuolo Calcio have today reached an agreement on two transfer deals concerning Luca Marrone and Federico Peluso.

Marrone, who spent last season on a co-ownership agreement with the Neroverdi, will return to Juventus after the club paid a €5 million fee for the remaining 50 per cent of his transfer rights. He has signed a five-year contract.

Peluso, meanwhile, will join Sassuolo on a permanent basis after both clubs agreed a €4.5m fee payable over three years for the defender's services.

Two quick questions...

1-How will Juventus survive going forward without the constant threat of Federico Peluso being shown a yellow card every time he steps on the field?

2-Does Luca Marrone, a former Juve youth product, actually figure into Juventus' plans next season?
Marrone battled injuries throughout his season at Sassuolo, limiting him to just 15 appearances (14 starts) in the center of the Neroverdi midfield. Not exactly what we figured was the plan so Marrone, who was sent to Sassuolo right before the transfer window closed last summer.

I guess it's just wait-and-see mode at this point when it comes to Marrone's immediate future. There have been rumors that he could be included in some kind of transfer to bring down the potential fee. According to some other outlets, Palmero have also expressed interest in the 24-year-old Marrone as they look to strengthen their squad in their return to Serie A.

Or, he could just stay at Juventus and playing for known-admirer Antonio Conte once more. That'd be perfectly okay, too, ya know.

Juventus Right to Rely on the Talented Luca Marrone

Aug 22, 2014

In the summer of 2011, both Luca Marrone and Antonio Conte came back to Turin after a spell at Siena, but the arrivals of the two men could not have been more different. While the coach was hailed as a returning hero, the future of his young charge was open to numerous questions.

Having helped the Tuscan minnows earn promotion to Serie A together, their careers once again diverged, the coach leading the Bianconeri to three years of incredible success, whilst the young player struggled to carve out a niche with the club.

Marrone was sent in co-ownership to Sassuolo last term, just as Conte was guiding the Grand Old Lady of Italian football to a third consecutive league title. The former was then sold back to Juve, arriving just in time to see the coach walk out on the club he had restored to prominence.

While he has now taken the job as national team coach, the future of Marrone appears to be with the club Conte has left behind. Born in the Torinese municipality of Bosconero, he helped the under-19 side lift the prestigious Viareggio Cup before moving on to Siena where he played a key midfield role.

Since then, however, he has evolved into a very different position, becoming an understudy to Leonardo Bonucci in the centre of the back three. Only this week, Beppe Marotta cited the improvements in his play as a reason the club would not be pursuing defensive reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the director general said that “the positive start Marrone has made” meant La Madama would “begin the season with the same defensive options that we currently have available to us," per Juventus.com.

Looking for what has lead to that assessment, it is impossible to ignore Marrone’s displays for Juventus in 2012-13, his first campaign in his new post. After being the subject of transfer speculation last January, the player declared that it was “better to play 10 games for a big club like Juventus instead of 30 games for another team,” per Football Italia, and did just that.

The Bianconeri won nine of those games, drawing the other fixture, and his stats made for impressive reading. According to WhoScored.com, Marrone averaged 1.8 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per appearance, whilst his passing was excellent—a major factor in his ability to adapt to the role.

Like Bonucci, he shared playmaking duties in order to free up Andrea Pirlo, averaging 48.9 passes per game and completing them at an excellent rate of 91.8 percent.

That form prompted another of his Italian international team-mates to hint at what may lie ahead for the talented Marrone, as Andrea Barzagli told reporters, per Goal.com's Stefan Coerts:

"Luca possesses great quality. He’s good at man-marking and can withstand physical contact.

He is very good as a central midfielder, but he also knows how to adapt well as a central defender.

When he’ll be able to play more regularly he’ll also gain consistency and will be the future of Juventus."

With Sassuolo struggling and only narrowly securing their Serie A status for this term, Marrone failed to build upon that impressive start, but it seems Massimiliano Allegri looks set to continue Conte’s work with the talented 24-year-old.

Five of the club’s pre-season fixtures—including Wednesday’s traditional encounter with a youth-sector side—have seen Marrone feature in central defence, and he was listed as a defender for their tour of Asia and Australia earlier this month.

However, the new coach also sees the need to play with a four-man back line, and in that framework he is likely to become a deputy for Pirlo in midfield. Playing time there may be even more difficult to find, but all indications are he will feature much more heavily this time round.

It appears Barzagli’s assessment of him may well prove accurate, and Marrone might yet be the future of Juventus.

Marrone suffers thigh strain

Sep 5, 2014

Juventus midfielder Luca Marrone missed training today and has since been diagnosed as having suffered a thigh strain.

The 24-year-old missed today’s workout and, in undergoing tests, has been confirmed by the Bianconeri as having suffered a first-to-second-degree strain of the rectus femoris muscle in his left thigh.

Further examinations will be carried out in the upcoming days to assess the gravity of the injury, and the estimated recovery time – a subject that has not been assessed yet.

Marrone on verge of Cordoba move

Jan 29, 2015

Juventus midfielder Luca Marrone is on the verge of securing a loan move to Spanish side Cordoba.

The 24-year-old has been pictured arriving at Cordoba airport, with Diario Cordoba indicating that he will undergo a medical this afternoon before being presented tomorrow.

The player will spend the rest of the season on loan in Spain, before a decision on his future is made in the summer.

Marrone returned to Turin this summer, having spent the second half of last season at Sassuolo, but has failed to make a single appearance for Massimiliano Allegri’s side this term.

The midfielder will join up with fellow Juventus loanee Fausto Rossi at Cordoba, who currently lie 15th in La Liga.

Luca Marrone reportedly fails
Córdoba medical, will return to Juventus

Jan 29, 2015

Just when you thought Luca Marrone was gone, he's coming right on back to Turin.

(Not exactly the same punch as in Godfather III, but yeah.)

The former Juventus primavera standout won't be heading to Spain on loan. Everything was ready to go. An announcement set to be made, and then ... splat! Why? Well, let's take a look:

A done deal, a kit number selected and a head raised high to the next journey. It's all over now. Luca Marrone, midfielder owned by Juventus that seems nearly on his way to Cordoba, did not pass his medical with the Spanish club. Therefore, the transfer is off, with the player heading back to Turin tomorrow. His future seemed set, but now it's yet to be written: Marrone will return to Juventus.

(Source: Gianluca Di Marzio)

So a guy, who has battled injuries for a large portion of the past two seasons, wasn't able to pass his medical tests? I mean, I'd like to think it's a surprise, but it isn't really earth-shattering news that Marrone, who has yet to even play a game with Juve this season, didn't pass his medical with Córdoba. He's been a constant on the Juventus injury list. Even when it looked like he might get healthy and be an option for Max Allegri, he gets injured once more and misses even more time.

The guy just can't catch a break. Even when he's trying to find playing time elsewhere.

Carpi on season-long loan

http://www.blackwhitereadallover.com/2015/7/8/8915993/luca-marrone-juventus-carpi-serie-a-transfers-2015

Jul 8, 2015

When Luca Marrone came back from a season on loan at Siena (under Antonio Conte, no less), it was widely regarded as a big step in what would be a bright career for his hometown club, Juventus.

Now, four years later, he's going to be trying to kick-start it.

Marrone, the Turin-born midfielder-turned-defender-turned-who-knows-what-now, joined newly-promoted side Carpi on a season-long loan deal, Juventus announced on Wednesday. It will be the second time in three seasons the 25-year-old Marrone has gone out on loan to one of Serie A's newest clubs, with the

The word from Juventus' official website tells us...

Luca Marrone has today joined newly promoted Serie A outfit Carpi on a season-long loan deal.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who made his Juventus first team debut in 2009, has amassed 23 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring once.

Okay, so it's not that much different than what we've come to already know about Marrone's move to Carpi, but an official statement is still an official statement, right? Right.

Marrone dealt with injury after injury a season ago, and didn't appear in one single game for Juve after he was bought outright from Sassuolo last summer, It was the second straight season where injuries derailed any kind of progress Mr. Luke Brown was making as a player. But now Carpi, which seems like a place that much-needed playing might be available as it looks to make the stay in Serie A more than just one season.

But, more importantly, he needs to be healthy to be able to play. That's a pretty crucial part in the equation, don't you think? Yeah, thought so, too.
