Preview: Parma vs. Juventus

Apr 9, 2015

Top meets bottom in Serie A this weekend, as runaway leaders Juventus make the trip to crisis-hit Parma.

A fourth successive Scudetto is almost in the hands of the Bianconeri and a victory would see them open up a commanding 17-point lead over Roma in the table.

Parma

Parma fans must be wondering what has happened to their club in the past year, as their very existence beyond this season is in doubt.

The Gialloblu had enjoyed a great season and finished sixth in Serie A, but due to an unpaid tax bill they were banned from competing in the Europa League.

Following a summer of upheaval their form deteriorated and they lost eight of their opening nine league games, although the huge scale of their problems had yet to emerge.

There had already been reports that a number of players had not been paid, which led to high-profile stars like Antonio Cassano leaving, before they were eventfully declared bankrupt by a court in Italy three weeks ago.

They have been allocated €5m (£3.6m) by the Italian league to complete the season and it appears that it will be their last in the top flight for the foreseeable future.

Despite their problems, they have managed to hold Roma and Inter Milan to draws away from home, while they picked up their first win in 11 games by beating Udinese on Wednesday.

Juventus

There just seems to be no stopping Juventus at the moment and they are absolutely flying as the season enters its final stretch.

They are 14 points clear at the top of Serie A and only an unthinkable collapse would prevent them from winning the title for a fourth consecutive season.

It is not just in the league where they are enjoying success this campaign, as they booked their place in the Coppa Italia final on Tuesday evening, by coming back from a first-leg defeat to earn a thumping 3-0 victory over Fiorentina.

They could very well be on for a treble, as Monaco await them in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, with the first leg of that clash set to take place in Turin week.

As you would expect, their recent form has been nothing short of sensational, with six wins from their last six matches. They haven't even conceded in any of those games and against Parma that run seems likely to continue due to the lack of goals scored this season by their opponents.

Recent form in Serie A: W D W W W W

Recent form (all competitions): W W W W W W

Team News

Juventus are expected to rest a number of key players ahead of their European clash with Monaco, so the likes of Carlos Tevez and Andrea Pirlo will probably not be risked.

Stephan Lichtsteiner may also sit the game out after missing their Coppa Italia victory with a bruise to his right thigh, while Paul Pogba remains on the sidelines.

Due to Tevez's absence, Alessandro Matri could keep his place up front, while Fernando Llorente will also be battling for a starting spot.

Meanwhile, Parma will be without the suspended Alessandro Lucarelli, while Ishak Belfodil could replace Massimo Coda in the attack.

Parma possible starting lineup:

Mirante, Cassani, Santacroce, Costa, Feddal, Jankovic, Lodi, Nocerino, Ghezzal, Varela, Belfodil

Juventus possible starting lineup:

Buffon, Padoin, Bonucci, Chiellini, Evra, Vidal, Marchisio, Pereyra, Sturaro, Matri, Lorente

Head To Head

In the reverse fixture, Juventus eased their way to the biggest win in Serie A this season by recording a crushing 7-0 victory over Parma.

It was much tighter when they met in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia in January, as a late goal from Alvaro Morata ensured a 1-0 win for the Bianconeri.

Juve are actually unbeaten in their last eight games against Parma, with six of those ending in wins, and rather unsurprisingly this is a fixture that they have tended to dominate over the years.

We say: Parma 0-2 Juventus

It's hard to see anything other than a Juventus victory, as Massimo Allegri's side are in irresistible form. Even without some of their key players, they should have far too much quality for Parma, which is why we are tipping the Bianconeri to comfortably seal the points.

Parma - Juventus Preview: Lodi warns
leaders to expect a battle

The treble-chasing Bianconeri are in sensational form but their hosts
are buzzing after picking up four points from their last two games.

Apr 10, 2015

Francesco Lodi has vowed that crisis club Parma will give another display of strength in the face of adversity against runaway Serie A leaders Juventus at Stadio Ennio Tardini on Saturday.

The Gialloblul face an uncertain future after they were declared bankrupt last month and entered administration, having run up huge debts.

The two-time Uefa Cup winners must hope that new investors step forward to save them from going out of business this summer but, despite not being paid for months, Roberto Donadoni's men have certainly not thrown the towel in.

Parma remain bottom of the table and look destined to remain there, but they secured a first Serie A victory since January by beating Udinese 1-0 on Wednesday.

That long-awaited win came on the back of a 1-1 draw at Inter last Saturday and Donadoni expressed his pride over the manner in which his players have gone about their business.

Lodi made his first start since January at San Siro and the midfielder is determined to show Juve that Parma are no soft touch despite their current plight.

He said: "We will try to play as we have done so far, with all our determination.

"Juve is the strongest team in Italy, has already practically won another league title, but in Parma will find a team ready to fight and sacrifice but that will not leave anything to chance because these months are important for the future of all of us and society.

"On Saturday we would like to give joy because we know that even with a win like yesterday [against Udinese] we can make many people happy, beginning with those who work every day here at Parma.

"There is so much pride, we are showing that we play head on to the end."

While Parma ponder what the future may hold, these are exciting times for Juve as they attempt to win a famous treble.

The Turin giants have all-but wrapped up a fourth successive Serie A title as they sit 14 points clear at the top of the table and can look forward to a Champions League quarter-final first leg tie at home to Monaco next Tuesday.

Juve will also face Lazio in the Coppa Italia final in June after beating Fiorentina 3-0 in their semi-final second leg to seal a 4-2 aggregate victory in midweek.

Massimiliano Allegri's men have won their last six games without conceding a goal, so Parma will be up against it this weekend and in a game captain Alessandro Lucarelli will miss due to suspension.

Juve still have injury concerns over Paul Pogba (hamstring), Carlos Tevez (thigh), Andrea Pirlo (calf), and Stephan Lichtsteiner (knock).

Striker Alvaro Morata scored a late winner as Juve triumphed at the Ennio Tardini 1-0 in January to keep their Coppa Italia hopes alive.

OPTA FACTS

This will be the 46th Serie A clash between these two sides: Juventus have won 21 times, Parma nine.

The Emiliani and Juventus have SHARED the points 15 times so far: the Bianconeri are the side Parma have drawn the most against in Serie A.

Parma have earned only two points over their last seven Serie A clashes with the Bianconeri, conceding 2.4 goals per match in these games.

In the reverse fixture, Juventus won by 7-0: that remains the largest Parma defeat in Serie A.

Both teams have not scored more than one goal in each of their last four Serie A meetings at the Tardini.

Parma are unbeaten in two Serie A games (1W, 1D) – they have taken four points from two consecutive league match-days for the first time this season.

Juventus have won their last four Serie A games, without conceding in these games.

The Bianconeri have not conceded goals in five out of their last nine away matches in the league.

Allegri: ‘Parma decisive for Scudetto’

Apr 10, 2015

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri believes tomorrow’s trip to Parma will be ‘decisive’ in the Scudetto race.

The Bianconeri are 14 points clear of the chasing pack, and the former Milan Coach said last week that two wins would take his side two-thirds of the way to a fourth consecutive title.

“Tomorrow we’ll put the best team we can out on the park,” Allegri told journalists in his pre-match Press conference.

“I think this is, as I said earlier, a decisive match for the League.

“Of course that’s if we win tomorrow in Parma which, by the way, won’t be easy, as we must compliment [Coach Roberto] Donadoni and his players for moving forward with such professionalism, and for showing such dignity in a very difficult season.

“Parma also have good players and staff and they’re also a team which competes well physically.

“We need to play a good game, because bringing home the three points tomorrow would be another step toward the Scudetto.

“There’d then be seven games to go and we’d be even closer to our goal, but to do that we have to play a good game tomorrow.

“So tomorrow, we’ll put out the best team we can, because whatever team you select should always be the best for that particular game.”

Tevez back for Juve but Pirlo
will have to wait - Allegri

The Juventus boss has confirmed that the Argentine is available once more
after injury but the midfielder will not return until the clash with Monaco.

Apr 10, 2015

Carlos Tevez is fit to return for Juventus on Saturday, but Andrea Pirlo will have to wait until the Champions League quarter-final showdown with Monaco to make his long-awaited comeback.

While Tevez is back after a thigh injury, Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed that Pirlo will miss the Serie A trip to Parma with his troublesome calf strain.

But he has confirmed that the midfielder will be available for Tuesday’s first leg against the Ligue 1 outfit at Juventus Stadium.

"Tevez is fine, and while Pirlo will not be available on Saturday, he will be on Tuesday," Allegri told a press conference on Friday.

Parma are well adrift at the bottom of the league and are destined for relegation at the end of the campaign, while they have also been declared bankrupt after countless FINANCIAL difficulties in recent times.

Yet Allegri insists that he will not be taking it easy at the Ennio Tardini, even with Juve holding a commanding 14-point lead in Serie A.

"On Saturday the best possible team will be out on the pitch, since so many players are already rested. It is a decisive game in the championship," he insisted.

"We must give Parma and [head coach Roberto] Donadoni great compliments for their professionalism in Serie A this season. From next Saturday we will begin a run of matches against sides going well in the league. The boys know the importance of the Parma game.

"Taking home the three points on Saturday would mean us taking home another little piece of the Scudetto."

The clash at Parma kicks off at 18:00 CET, with attention then turning to Tuesday's home fixture against Monaco as Juve go in search of their first Champions League quarter-final win since 2003.

Parma v Juventus: Preview

Apr 10, 2015

Juventus have one of their toughest games of the season coming up against Monaco in the Champions League but coach Massimiliano Allegri wants his players to focus on Parma.

Tuesday's 3-0 win at Fiorentina gave Juve a place in the Coppa Italia final, ensuring they continue fighting for silverware on three fronts.

But even though his side have a 14-point lead over Roma at the top of Serie A, with the title looking like a formality, Allegri is determined to stop his players focussing on the cup competitions.

``We must maintain our balance and concentration, '' Allegri said to the Italian press. ``Otherwise, we risk falling.

``We have an opportunity to turn a great season into an exceptional one.

``We are on course for the club's fourth straight scudetto, we are in the Coppa Italia final and we are alive in a very difficult competition as the Champions League is.

``Our focus right now is on taking three points at Parma and after that we will prepare for Tuesday's (home) quarter-final match against Monaco.''

The Turin giants TRAVEL to the Ennio Tardini stadium riding a four-game winning streak in Serie A.

Juve, who have the best attack and defence in the competition, have kept a clean sheet in their last four league games.

But Parma midfielder Francesco Lodi has warned Juve to expect a battle this weekend.

The Ducale club clinched their just fourth win of the season and first since January 6 in Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Udinese.

The bankrupt club went into administration last month and has an uncertain future.

``We are taking on the strongest team in Serie A,'' Lodi said. ``They have almost won the scudetto but they should know that they will face a Parma side that is determined to prove its worth.

``We have two important months ahead of us for our future and for that of Parma's in view of possible future buyers.

``We will give our all against Juve because nothing is impossible.''

Parma, coached by Roberto Donadoni, lie at the foot of the standings, 13 points from safety with 30 points still up for grabs.

The hosts are without captain Alessandro Lucarelli, who is suspended.

Parma V Juventus – Preview: Seventh Heaven Again?

Apr 10, 2015

Bottom hosts top in Serie A on Saturday at 18:00 CET as Parma face Juventus at the Stadio Ennio Tardini hoping to avoid a repeat of the reverse fixture in which Roberto Donadoni’s men were hit for seven in Turin.

The 7-0 defeat in November was the lowest point of what has been a nightmare season for Parma, who have won just three times all season and face almost certain relegation to Serie B as they are currently 16 points from safety after a three-point deduction as punishment for the club’s financial woes.

The champions on the other hand look well on course to retain their crown with a 14-point lead at the top.

The Bianconeri go into the game on the back of an impressive 3-0 victory in Tuesday’s Coppa Italia semi-final at Fiorentina, meaning that they haven’t conceded in their last four games in all competitions.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side are unbeaten in Serie A since October having lost just once all season, boasting the division’s best attack with 57 goals, and have beaten Parma in six of the last eight meetings between the sides.

Parma on the other hand have the league’s second worst defence having shipped 54 goals this season and haven’t won since early January, but will take hope from the fact that two of their three wins this term were on home turf against Inter and Fiorentina.

If they are to pull off one of the shocks results of the season they will have to do so without their goalscorer in last week’s 1-1 draw at Inter, Andi Lila, who along with Zouhair Feddai should be replaced by Massimo Coda and the experienced Mattia Cassani due to injury.

Juventus look likely to make four changes from the side that won in Florence, with Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Barzagli, Angelo Ogbonna and Fernando Llorente to come in for Marco Storari, Giorgio Chiellini, Roberto Pereyra and Alvaro Morata.

Form Guide: Parma (L-D-D-L-L-D), Juventus (W-D-W-W-W-W)

Expected Starting XIs

Parma: Mirante, Cassani, Mendes, Costa, Gobbi, Nocerino, Jorquera, J. Mauri, Varela, Belfodil, Coda

Juventus: Buffon, Barzagli, Bonucci, Ogbonna, Padoin, Vidal, Marchisio, Sturaro, Evra, Llorente, Matri

Juventus squad for Parma

Apr 10, 2015

Andrea Pirlo and Carlos Tevez are rested for the game against Parma, with a view to Tuesday night's clash with Monaco.

The Bianconeri, who currently enjoy a 14-point lead in Serie A, appear to be prioritising their Champions League engagements and will rest some of their star players, despite Max Allegri’s words earlier.

In addition to Pirlo and Tevez, captain Gianluigi Buffon and midfielder Paul Pogba are out of the squad as they are deemed unfit to play. The former is reported by Juventus to be suffering from an intestinal virus, while the latter is still recovering from injury.

Juventus squad for Parma: Chiellini, Ogbonna, Pepe, Marchisio, Morata, Coman, Llorente, De Ceglie, Bonucci, Padoin, Vidal, Vitale, Lichtsteiner, Sturaro, Storari, Matri, Evra, Rubinho, Pereyra, Marrone, Audero

Juventus must not be complacent
for tricky league trip to Parma

Apr 10, 2015

Perhaps it is to be expected. When a football giant plays with fluidity and great hunger, the world expects. The fact that Juventus overcame Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia despite losing the first leg at home sent a clear signal. This is a team on the rise, a team that believes and a squad that conquer any challenge.

In times like these, it can be difficult to keep players' feet on the ground. Media outlets are already talking about a possible treble. Could the Old Lady pull off such excellence? Of course they can; if Atletico Madrid can reach the final of the Champions League and win La Liga despite the arguably tougher competition in Spain, then the Bianconeri can achieve as much if not more. However, to start dreaming about such matters now, before the quarterfinal has not even been played, is dangerous and naive.

A relevant cautionary tale can be found a bit lower down in the league table. Roma were in tremendous form during the early part of the season, accumulating wins and impressive performances in Europe. The coach wanted to boost his players' morale even further by guaranteeing the Scudetto at the end of the season. Sadly he only made his men arrogant and increased the pressure. They went into their Champions League group stage game with Bayern Munich thinking they could challenge and play with possession. Yet their overconfidence caused their undoing, resulting in the most humiliating 7-1 defeat. The Bavarians showed them the reality and Roma's psychological breakdown did the rest.

In the Champions League round of 16, Arsenal faced Monaco with a hint of arrogance at receiving an "easy" draw. They are quite possibly playing the best football in England at the moment yet underestimated their opponent and paid the price. At this stage of the season, concentration, unity and sacrifice can win games even if the opponent boasts better technique and more quality.

Massimiliano Allegri has consistently been asked if they can win the biggest trophy in Europe and he's getting tired of responding in exactly the same way. They will take it one game at a time. Yet regardless of how much he can whip his squad into shape and focus their attention on the little details, the talk surrounding the team is overly confident and risks derailing the side regardless.

Monaco will be a difficult opponent in the Champions League quarterfinals -- few sides boast such wonderful organisation behind the ball -- while Parma, Juve's next opponent in Serie A, are playing for themselves, free of pressure and expectation. Both opponents are looking to cause an upset and both are very capable.

The Ducali have managed some splendid results despite the current state of affairs, showing integrity and honour. Roberto Donadoni and his squad of unpaid players are giving all they can in hopes of collecting points and pleasing the fans who have stood by them through torrid times. If Juventus are lethargic on Saturday, then Parma may well do as they did against Inter and Roma and grab a point regardless of their difficulties. In fact, one need only remember how well the Gialloblu did in the Coppa Italia match between the two sides to know this isn't a squad that will roll down and accept defeat.

Both Carlos Tevez and Andrea Pirlo will not be available for the match but Allegri has shown he has a squad capable of rotating well and one that is not dependent on a particular player. As he did in the Coppa Italia match back in January, it's likely he will opt for a 4-3-3 shape with an emphasis on attack to destroy Parma's seemingly feeble backline.

Simone Pepe, Fernando Llorente and Kingsley Coman are all in contention to start and it remains to be seen whether on this occasion they can provide more attacking danger than last time. The young Frenchman in particular will need to be more mobile than he has been previously, in order to allow Llorente to make an impact and operate without the pressure.

Allegri insists his men will take the game seriously as after this game, they will be facing tougher competition in Serie A going forward. A win here would allow them to proceed with less anxiety, not to mention the confidence it will give them ahead of their Champions League clash. It may not be the toughest challenge they'll face but it will help maintain that momentum they need as they push on for glory.

Juventus vs. Parma Preview: Round 30 —
The latest calm before the storm

Apr 11, 2015

Right or wrong, Parma has been the butt of quite a few jokes this season. The ones where we say something like "Hey, what's happened more often this season, Amauri scoring a goal or Parma being sold?" That kind of stuff is the reality of Parma's current state. They've been bankrupt and then saved while the whole time toiling around the relegation zone.

Juventus, however, are in the exact opposite situation as their prosciutto-guzzling friends to the south. Money is coming in by the millions thanks to a deep run in the Champions League. Max Allegri is smiling like a guy who just hit all six numbers in the latest draw. Juve are on the brink of a fourth straight title. We're all making Scudetto parade plans as Juve's double-digit lead over Roma isn't going anywhere.

Life is good — at least for one of us, that is.

And guess who just so happens to be popping up on Juventus' schedule this weekend?

Ha! It's so funny how those things work out the way they do.

Nine rounds to go, even fewer before Scudetto No. 33 is signed, sealed and delivered to Juventus Stadium for yet another big-time celebration. The way things are going now with Roma not even putting a dent into the 14-point lead atop the table and it won't be long before those Scudetto parade plans are being made an actuality.

Max Allegri has called tomorrow's game "A difficult, but potentially decisive game in our race for the title." And while I don't know how truly difficult it will be considering how poor Parma has been throughout the season, it certainly will be a decisive game when it comes to wrapping up the Scudetto simply because there's just one fewer game to go. There's only so much everybody else can do because of how big Juve's lead atop the Serie A table currently is.

And let's be honest, who amongst us in black and white colored glasses doesn't want Juventus to go into their clash with Monaco with a lot of momentum? They've played so well these last few weeks, this is just another chance to build upon that. I won't be opposed to that. (Shocking, I know.)

GOOD NEWS

This is a two-part, short-attention-span reading exercise. First, the Serie A table position of both Juventus and Parma entering the weekend's set of games. As you can guess, there's a slight bit of space between the two clubs.

1. Juventus — 70 points from 29 games

20. Parma — 12 points from 28 games

Second, let's look at the goal different between the two clubs.

Juventus — plus-43

Parma — minus-31

Good. Now that we're done with that, we can continue on with this preview that talks about the best team in Italy's top flight playing against the worst one.

BAD NEWS

No Andrea Prilo. No Carlos Tévez. No Andrea Barzagli. No Gianluigi Buffon. Some of these decisions are with Monaco in mind, others are because of injuries. It's easy to figure out which is which.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

1. How much squad rotation will there be?

The funny thing is, if you were to approach this like a Coppa Italia game, you'd probably be thinking to yourself something along the lines of "Juve's RESERVES are good enough to beat Parma, so rotate that squad away, Max!" I know I have. And, to be honest, I still am. Juventus are playing easily the worst team in Serie A this season just a few short days before the latest and greatest game that is being considered the most important of the season.

"We'll go out with our best team tomorrow as many players have rested. It's a crucial game for our title ambitions."

Max is such a sneaky little devil when it comes to talking about the lineups at his pre-match press conferences. I'll just leave it at this: If Juventus' lineup is anything close to what Allegri is planning on rolling out there against Monaco on Tuesday, then I'll be pretty surprised. Last-place Parma or Champions League quarterfinals? Hmmm, I wonder which one has more importance right now...

2. Will Kingsley Coman get a shot from the start?

Max Allegri has done a lot right over the last month as Juve has gone on this run both in Italy and in Europe. One of the more head-scratch-worthy moves was brining Kingsley Coman on for all of about three minutes before taking the young Frenchman off in favor of Fernando Llorente against Fiorentina midweek. With no Carlos Tévez called up and Álvaro Morata expected to get a rest before the first leg against Monaco, this could — and should — be the chance for Coman to get his first start in over a month. Remember, Coman has barely seen any game time in the past two months, so if he does get the start against Parma, it will be the first time he's truly had a chance to play since the last time Juve played against Saturday's opposition. That's unfortunate, because while he's a raw talent, the potential is there. He just need game minutes.

JuventusFC ✔ @juventusfcen
.@OfficialAllegri: "Coman will get some game time to improve his qualities between now and the end of the season."

3. Service to Fernando Llorente.

We can go on about how disappointing Llorente has been this season, but that horse has been beaten enough already. A lot of folks are suspecting Llorente will get the start up front no matter which formation Allegri chooses to go with against Parma. If Llorente is the center man in a proposed trident, then the wingers supplying the big Spaniard the ball will be almost as important as him scoring it himself. We know Llorente will be a threat in the air no matter what kind of form he is currently in simply because he's such a huge target for crosses. Some lineups thrown out there by the Italian media had Juve going with a 4-3-3 with Coman and SIMONE Pepe as wingers. Even if it's a 4-3-1-2 that Allegri goes with, the fact still remains about Llorente — if he gets some crosses, he will have the chance to take advantage of the glaring weaknesses at the back for Parma.

4. How much of a flight will Parma put up?

Here's something we haven't been able to say much at all this season: Parma is coming off a win! You wanna know how many times we've been able to say that this season? Four. Four freaking times Parma have recorded a win. That's as many wins as Juventus have had in the last month — in Serie A alone. I don't doubt Parma will be in much higher spirits after their win over Udinese earlier this week compared to the first time Juventus saw them and handed them quite a healthy defeat. (That's probably an understatement when you consider the final score is 7-0.) But with their fate pretty much sealed because they're so many points away from safety with nine games to go, Parma is playing for pride and that's about it. Will they? If their win over Udinese is any indication, that's certainly going to be the case.

My starting XI (4-3-3): Storari; Padoin, Bonucci, Ogbonna, De Ceglie; Vidal, Marchisio, Sturaro; Pepe, Llorente, Coman

OFFICIAL KICKOFF TIME: 6 P.M. IN ITALY; HIGH NOON ON THE EAST COAST; 9 A.M. ON THE WEST COAST

Line-ups: Parma-Juventus

Apr 11, 2015

Juventus have to do without Carlos Tevez and much of their midfield against a Parma side that won’t go without a fight.

It kicks off at 18.00 CET.

Max Allegri’s men are seemingly unstoppable at the moment in Serie A and the Coppa Italia, where they crushed Fiorentina 3-0 to reach the Final this week.

They are now preparing for the Champions League quarter-final against Monaco on Tuesday night, so make numerous changes.

Tevez and Andrea Barzagli are rested due to muscular problems, joining Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba, Martin Caceres, Kwadwo Asamoah and Romulo on the treatment table.

Parma have captain Alessandro Lucarelli suspended, while Andi Lila, Andrea Costa, MacDonald Mariga and Daniele Galloppa are sidelined.

The Ducali might be under administration and unpaid since July 2014, but they are still putting in the performances this season.

In the last two rounds they have held Inter to a 1-1 draw at San Siro and beaten Udinese 1-0 in a rescheduled midweek game.

Roberto Donadoni’s side also want to regain some pride after their historic 7-0 defeat at the Juventus Stadium.

Juventus: Storari; Lichtsteiner, Chiellini, Ogbonna, Padoin; Vidal, Marchisio, Sturaro; Pereyra; Coman, Llorente

Parma: Mirante; Santacroce, Mendes, Feddal; Varela, Jose Mauri, Jorquera, Nocerino, Gobbi; Ghezzal, Belfodil

HT 0-0: Parma hold Juve at bay

Apr 11, 2015

Antonio Mirante performed some crucial saves to keep Parma level with Juventus, while Genoa hit the Cagliari woodwork three times.

The Serie A leaders made numerous changes to prepare for the Champions League quarter-final with Monaco, just days after crushing Fiorentina 3-0 in the Coppa Italia semis. Carlos Tevez and Andrea Barzagli were rested due to muscular problems, while Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba, Kwadwo Asamoah, Martin Caceres and Romulo were injured. The Ducali were under administration and not paid since July 2014, but over the last two games had held Inter 1-1 at San Siro and beaten Udinese. Alessandro Lucarelli continued his ban.

Parma started stronger, but as time wore on Juve increased the pressure and Antonio Mirante was at full stretch on a Roberto Pereyra strike, while Claudio Marchisio’s screamer was charged down.

Ishak Belfodil was dangerous on the counter, his rising finish across the face of goal skimming the far top corner.

Mirante performed a stunning reaction save with his foot to keep out Arturo Vidal’s header at the back post from a well-worked Marchisio free kick. The goalkeeper again used his legs on Kingsley Coman’s angled drive.

Parma 1-0 Juventus: Rock-bottom
hosts stun Scudetto holders

Massimiliano Allegri's men were heavy favourites against Roberto Donadoni's
financially screwed side but Jose Mauri's goal made the visitors pay.

2sbmxyt.jpg

Apr 11, 2015

Jose Mauri scored only his second Parma goal as they sprung the biggest surprise of the Serie A season with a 1-0 win over Juventus, who suffered their first league defeat since October.

Financially stricken Parma went into Saturday's clash at the Stadio Ennio Tardini 13 points adrift of safety following a campaign that will be remembered for their off-the-field problems rather than any exploits on the pitch.

But Roberto Donadoni's men managed to give their suffering fans a stunning victory that they could not have envisaged courtesy of a determined performance against the runaway leaders, who are 14 points clear at the top of the table.

Juve dictated play for long periods and created the better the opportunities in the opening 45 minutes, but Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante kept them at bay.

With Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final clash against Monaco perhaps playing on their minds, a Juve side without the services of Carlos Tevez and Andrea Pirlo slumped to their first Serie A defeat since losing to Genoa over five months ago.

Mauri's cool finish from the edge of the area on the hour mark sealed a memorable fifth league win of the season for Parma and their second this week after beating Udinese on Wednesday.

It took 20 minutes for Juve to carve out their first opportunity, Roberto Pereyra's low curling effort turned past the post by Mirante before Ishak Belfodil bent an effort wide at the other end.

The best chance of a disappointing first half came in the 32nd minute when Arturo Vidal met Claudio Marchisio's free kick, only for Mirante to deny him with a fine far post save from the midfielder's header.

Forward Kingsley Coman then forced the impressive Mirante into action again after finding half a yard of space in the box as Juve finished the first half on the front foot.

But the game became more open upon the restart, and Mauri took advantage by firing Parma into a shock lead.

The midfielder raced on to a lay off from Belfodil on the edge of area and coolly angled the ball into the top-right corner beyond the helpless Marco Storari.

Juve, despite their obvious superior quality, showed little signs of mounting a comeback in the closing stages, with the leaders' forward line frustrated by a determined Parma side.

Parma had little difficulty in holding firm for three points in another defiant display despite their uncertain future.

Juve capitulate in Parma!

Bankrupt bottom club Parma caused the upset of the season
by beating leaders Juventus 1-0 at the Tardini!

Apr 11, 2015

Juventus had lost just one game all season, 1-0 deep into stoppages against Genoa.

Mirante performed a stunning reaction save with his foot to keep out Arturo Vidal’s header at the back post from a well-worked Marchisio free kick. The goalkeeper again used his legs on Kingsley Coman’s angled drive.

Parma started the second half brightly and took a shock lead, as Ishak Belfodil burst down the right and pulled back for Jose Mauri to smash into the roof of the net from just inside the box.

The Ducali more than held their own at the Tardini and went for a second, Varela’s effort charged down, despite some players collapsing with cramp. Juve struggled to mount much of a comeback and failed to create a genuine scoring opportunity.

Parma 1-0 Juventus: Shock Of The Season As
Rock-Bottom Crociati Stun Champions

huj5f6.jpg

Apr 11, 2015

Troubled Parma caused a huge upset by beating defending champions Juventus at the Stadio Ennio Tardini on Saturday evening, marking back to back wins for Roberto Donadoni’s side.

Eighteen-year-old midfielder Jose Mauri’s strike settled the tie on the hour mark, giving the team propping up the Serie A table an unexpected win against the league’s runaway leaders.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri clearly had one eye on his side’s upcoming Champions League tie with Monaco, as Gigi Buffon, Leonardo Bonucci, Alvaro Morata and Carlos Tevez were all rested.

The champions were slow to get going but had penalty appeals waved away after 19 minutes when Fernando Llorente was grappled to the ground.

Roberto Pereyra had a curling strike pushed away by Antonio Mirante soon afterwards, but the hosts almost surprised on the counter attack after a superb long ball from Antonio Nocerino found Ishak Belfodil, who cut inside and blasted his finish narrowly wide.

The Bianconeri came close just after half an hour, when a superb set piece delivery from Claudio Marchisio was met by an unmarked Arturo Vidal at the back post, but the Chilean was denied by a point-blank save from Mirante.

Parma’s goalkeeper was again decisive as Juve’s pressure intensified before the end of the first half. Kingsley Coman threatened for the first time when he burst past his marker and fired a low drive at goal that was saved by the feet of Mirante.

The visitors struggled to create chances in the second half and were made to pay on the hour mark as Parma took a shock lead.

Roberto Donadoni’s side again hit on the counter attack and Belfodil squared a pass to the edge of the box where 18-year-old starlet Mauri timed his run to side foot home an emphatic finish.

Allegri hoped that the introduction of substitutes Morata, Pepe and 17-year-old debutant Mattia Vitale would spark his team into life, but a lethargic Bianconeri performance continued as they failed to break down the well-organised hosts.

The result does not bode well for Juventus only days before their vital Champions League last 16 tie, but gave the Parma fans a rare moment of joy in an otherwise tumultuous season.

Gobbi: Only Football Could Bring
A Story Like Parma’s Win Over Juventus

68zrj6.jpg

Apr 11, 2015

An emotional Massimo Gobbi spoke with great pride about his side’s achievement after they handed champions Juventus only their second loss of the season.

In the absence of Alessandro Lucarelli, he captained the side and was one of their star performers as they stunned the Bianconeri – although it still leaves them 10 points adrift of the safety places.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia afterwards, he enthused: “Only football can give you stories like this, it is incredible!

“We are so happy and I am so proud of us as a team. We never gave up and this is a victory that gives us the greatest satisfaction. I have enormous pride at being the captain of this team.

“We do not think of the standings but we only take satisfaction away from this. After some difficult months, we are calmer now and are thinking only of what to do on the field.”

He added: “After the failings, we have banded together even more. We hit the bottom but are remaining professional and training hard.”

Allegri: 'Juve did nothing right'

314t4wh.jpg

Apr 11, 2015

Max Allegri said Juventus “did nothing and deserved the defeat” against bottom of the table Parma.

The runaway leaders lost only their second Serie A game of the season, 1-0 at the Stadio Tardini.

“I lost my voice almost straight away. We didn’t do anything in the second half and deserved the defeat,” he rasped on Sky Sport Italia.

Were Juve distracted by Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final with Monaco?

“Monaco are another matter. Today we underestimated an important match and didn’t realise it could allow us to secure the Scudetto.

“Now we’ve got head-to-head clashes coming up and this was a perfect opportunity to seal the deal.

“Changes to the line-up are not an excuse. We kept a low tempo and I don’t think we won a single challenge out there. That says it all.

“I hope this can give us a positive shake-up, but we shouldn’t need that. It was the chance to stay 14 points clear of Roma and Lazio, but we weren’t up to it today.

“Parma played well, while we were slow and risked conceding on three or four counter-attacks. We didn’t control the game at all, as even in the first half Parma were dangerous.

“This was the match we had to play with maturity. Even if we couldn’t win it, then we certainly shouldn’t have lost.”

Donadoni: 'Parma fairy tale'

2aamzxl.jpg

Apr 11, 2015

Roberto Donadoni admits Parma’s 1-0 victory over Juventus was “like a fairy tale” and they will keep fighting.

The Ducali are bottom of the table, were docked three points, are under administration following bankruptcy and nobody at the club has been paid since July 2014.

Despite all this, and the ban for captain Alessandro Lucarelli, they’ve earned seven points in their last three games against Inter, Udinese and Juventus.

“We won against the leaders and that is something to be satisfied about,” Coach Donadoni told Sky Sport Italia.

“We knew how much our fans cared about facing a side like Juve and we’re happy to have given them this joyous evening.

“I think it’s only right to give credit to the lads for their extraordinary efforts. We know that there’s only one path to take and that is to prove ourselves.

“We want to end this campaign well and create foundations for the future, plus repay the fans for their love.

“I have a young daughter and was watching a fairy tale with her today. This match reminded me that fairy tales can come true.”

Donadoni also revealed he’s taken an extra step to help Parma, as his restaurant is one of the new shirt sponsors.

“I must thank my two associates. We’re all trying to give a hand so we can reach the end with dignity.”

Player Ratings: Parma 1-0 Juventus

t8nqme.jpg

Apr 11, 2015

Parma stunned the continent by defeating the monstrous Juventus 1-0 at the Stadio Ennio Tardini during Saturday night’s Serie A action.

A fine performance in net from Antonio Mirante and a crucial goal by Jose Mauri were enough to propel the Crociati to glory on the night.

Parma

Antonio Mirante – 7.5 – Excellent - The heroics of the shot stopper were invaluable against the dangerous attack of Juventus throughout the match. His shocking first half stops on Arturo Vidal and Kingsley Coman seemed to bolster the mentality of the Gialloblu, and he should be given much of the credit for the tremendous result.

Fabiano Santacroce – 7.5 – Fighter - The defender was causing immense frustration for the Bianconeri and was most likely leaving with bruises after the affair. His dominance in the air and from standing tackles was crucial to preserving a strong performance by the home side.

Pedro Mendes – 7.5 – Guard - As a vital cog in the Parma back line, the Portuguese defender kept his composure in the late onslaught of attacks by the visitors and was great at winning back possession from his numerous tackles.

Zouhair Feddal – 7 – Aggressor - A crunching shoulder tackle inside his penalty area had set the tone for the Moroccan’s work rate during the 90 minutes. He blocked Marchisio’s dangerous half volley early on to preserve the deadlock between the mismatched sides and held on well for the win.

Silvestre Varela – 7 – Rapid - From the get-go, the Portuguese winger was effective in stretching out the opposition with his darting runs on the ball towards goal. When the Gialloblu needed possession he was up to the task, and notched six tackles on the night.

Jose Mauri – 8 – Slayer - Undoubtedly the hero of the night, the Argentine born Italian was stellar in all facets of his position against the Bianconeri. In addition to hitting the back of the net, he made four tackles and got back to assist the defenders by blocking a shot. The stadium gave the 18-year-old a much deserved round of applause as he was substituted in the late stages of the match, it will be a night to remember for the youngster.

Cristobal Jorquera – 6.5 – Bright - The Chilean made a bright start against the league leaders and maintained a high accuracy in his passing through the crowded midfield. Despite having a hard time hitting the target on his handful of shots, the 27-year-old did well to mount pressure when given the chance.

Antonio Nocerino – 7 – Safeguard - The Milan loanee gave a fine display in terms of cautious passing and even dished out a great through chip in the 20th minute to give Ishak Belfodil a run on goal. All in all, his work rate was vital in contributing to Parma’s three points.

Massimo Gobbi – 7 – Leader - Even after taking an early elbow from Roberto Pereyra, the Italian led his side by example and did not hesitate to get stuck in the tackle and fight in the air. His crosses from the left end of the pitch kept the Bianconeri defence on high alert.

Abdelkader Ghezzal – 6 – Quiet - The Algerian struggled to assert himself in front of goal, and may have squandered his chance in the first half as a loose ball fell to his feet with the net in close range. Despite some early frustration, he was key to Parma’s game winning goal after running up the middle of the park and linking up to Ishak Belfodil at the right side of the box.

Ishak Belfodil – 7 – Valuable - Like his Algerian compatriot, the attacker found chances few and far between, but his vision to assist Jose Mauri’s goal was as silky as you’d like, and he should be given due credit for earning the stunning win.

Substitutes

Mattia Cassani – N/A

Andi Lila – N/A

Giuseppe Prestia – N/A

Juventus

Marco Storari – 6 – Helpless - The experienced goalkeeper would love to forget this night. Despite never needing to make a save he was helpless in stopping a stunning effort from Jose Mauri and could only contribute in terms of his distribution from goal kicks.

Stephan Lichtsteiner – 6.5 – Silenced - The Swiss fullback seemed to be the target of many crunching tackles and was unable to play his style of sprinting and crossing from the outside. He had a staggering amount of touches on the ball but did not offer more than a single tackle from his defensive area.

Angelo Ogbonna – 7 – Impressive - The 26-year old was very convincing in the air and stole possession six times in this regard. Along with his fellow defence he will definitely feel robbed of at least a point after playing well in his passing game.

Giorgio Chiellini – 7 – Decent - The defender succeeded in keeping the opposition at bay for the majority of the match, and was his usual self when winning in the air and moving the ball past the half way line, but he will be frustrated with the loss no doubt.

Simone Padoin – 6.5 – Feisty - The fullback answered much of the grittiness that the home side were asserting and did well to win possession from his tackles. Unfortunately his efforts were not enough to change the result.

Arturo Vidal – 6.5 – Slow - The Chilean was a threat from all angles of the pitch on the night, and forced two fine saves from Antonio Mirante after firing a low curling effort from inside the area and later connecting a close range header on Claudio Marchisio’s free kick. Unfortunately his lack of a defensive work rate was evident as he was unable to chase down Jose Mauri for his game winning strike at the edge of the penalty area.

Claudio Marchisio – 6 – Trigger - Although the Italian international could not be faulted for his tremendous accuracy in playmaking, his shooting was uncharacteristically poor, and his chances from the top of the 18 should have hit the target.

Stefano Sturaro – 6 – Consistent - The 22-year-old put in a good shift for Juventus in terms of his distribution and defensive work rate, but his lack of attacking tendencies prompted Maximiliano Allegri to take him off for the experienced Simone Pepe once his side was down a goal.

Roberto Pereyra – 6 – Solid - The Argentinian continues to perform well for the Old Lady, and tonight he asserted himself with a shot on target, a dribble won, and 81% passing accuracy. Unfortunately the player had to make way for Alvaro Morata when his side conceded the goal from Jose Mauri.

Kingsley Coman – 7 – Confident - After a rather wasteful opening 45 minutes, the Frenchman did well to create enough space and beat his marker in the box to fire a hard left footed shot on Mirante right before the break, but again the Italian shot stopper was up to the task. The 18-year-old continued to show good confidence on the ball, but was a bit too adventurous and lost the ball at times.

Fernando Llorente – 5.5 – Flat - Tonight will go down as one of the inconsistent showings by the Spaniard. The target man couldn’t amass a single shot on target and was guilty of attempting a header when off balance and should have left some crosses for his teammates.

Substitutes

Alvaro Morata – 6 – Lively
- Perhaps the Madrid man should have been given more time on the pitch as he immediately put the defence on their heels with his sprints away on the dribble. His ability to pass accurately and win back possession were valuable, but too little to bring at least a point to the Bianconeri.

Simone Pepe – 6 – Secure - After replacing Sturaro, the Italian took on the set pieces and whipped in some promising plays, but could not alter the result.

Mattia Vitale – N/A

Juventus lose for first time
in over five months

The Bianconeri fell to a shock defeat at rock-bottom Parma
and saw two outstanding Serie A runs come to an end.

35izyub.jpg

Apr 11, 2015

Juventus suffered their first league loss in over five months and conceded after 431 minutes of Serie A football as they fell to a shock 1-0 defeat against bottom-of-the-table Parma.

The Bianconeri had conceded only 14 goals in the league all season going into the game and were on an incredible run of six games in all competitions without conceding.

However, Jose Mauri's second-half winner for Parma at the Ennio Tardini saw this trend come to an end.

It was a huge shock as Parma were declared bankrupt last month and are almost certain to be relegated at the end of the season as they are still 10 points from safety.

However, Roberto Donadoni's men are not going down without a fight and have now won two matches in the space of a week, having defeated Udinese 1-0 on Wednesday.

Juventus also saw another record tumble on Saturday as they lost their first Serie A game since October 29 and only their second of the entire campaign. It was the best run of form of a club in a major league this season.

The Bianconeri will be hoping this defeat won't have an impact on their Champions League chances as they host Monaco in the quarter final first leg in Turin on Tuesday.

Allegri slams Juventus after shock Parma defeat

The Bianconeri coach conceded his side "did nothing right" as they fell to just
their second defeat of the season in a 1-0 loss to Serie A's bottom-placed side.

j96iro.jpg

Apr 11, 2015

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has conceded his side deserved their shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of bottom-placed Parma on Saturday.

The reigning Italian champions had gone 20 Serie A matches unbeaten before Jose Mauri struck the only goal of the game after an hour at the Ennio Tardini – ending Juve's run of 431 minutes without conceding in the league.

Allegri praised cash-strapped Parma for their performance but slammed his own side's performance as the Old Lady fell to just their second league defeat of the season.

"We didn't do anything in the second half and deserved the defeat," Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

"I hope this can give us a shake-up, but we shouldn't really need that. We had the chance to stay 14 points clear of Roma and Lazio, but we weren't up to it today.

"Parma played very well. We were too slow and risked conceding on three or four of their counterattacks. We didn't control the game. Even in the first half Parma posed a danger."

Juventus remain 14 points clear of second-placed Roma and 15 of third-placed Lazio ahead of Sunday's fixtures and remain on course to claim their fourth consecutive league title.

Parma

83 A. Mirante - The keeper made some great saves to keep Juve at bay, particularly from Vidal and Coman in the first half.

27 F. Santacroce - Dealt with Llorente well and made a crucial tackle to deny him during the first half.

4 Pedro Mendes - The Portuguese riled the opposition with his physical play and proved a strong competitor in the air.

28 Z. Feddal - Read the game well at the back and showed good strength in the tackle to thwart runners into the box.

26 Silvestre Varela - The Portuguese's pace was a source of concern for Juve, regularly drawing fouls as he looked to break away.

8 J. Mauri - Won the ball a few times to help push his team forwards and netted the decisive goal with a great finish.

80 C. Jorquera - Provided some decent set-piece deliveries for the hosts and sprayed a few good passes from the midfield.

23 A. Nocerino - Often drifted over to the left-hand side and sent some great passes in behind the defence.

18 M. Gobbi - Took an early blow to the nose but played on and supplied a few decent crosses from the left while letting little past him.

5 A. Ghezzal - Showed a few flashes of individual brilliance and linked up with his strike partner to good effect.

10 I. Belfodil - Held up the ball well and involved others. Sent a great effort narrowly wide in the first half and assisted Mauri's goal.

Substitutes

2 M. Cassani
- Replaced Santacroce in the 80th minute.

3 A. Lila - Brought on for Mauri in the 82nd minute.

13 G. Prestia - Came on for Belfodil in the 86th minute.

Juventus

30 M. Storari - Did not have many saves to make all afternoon as Parma created few openings.

26 S. Lichtsteiner - The Swiss pushed high up the pitch on the right and won a few free kicks but did not supply much ammunition to the forwards.

5 A. Ogbonna - Came into the centre of defence in place of Bonucci and was quick to rush into tackles.

3 G. Chiellini - Got stretched a couple of times by balls over the top but, on the whole, had a comfortable afternoon.

20 S. Padoin - Operated in the left-back position and was comfortable, though he did not contribute much of note.

23 A. Vidal - The Chilean pulled a good save from Mirante before the break but provided little more of substance.

8 C. Marchisio - Struggled to influence the match in the centre of the park, sending shots wide an wasting set-pieces.

27 S. Sturaro - Showed a lack of positional awareness as Mauri fired in the equaliser and was not particularly positive in possession.

37 R. Pereyra - Made a few good runs through the Parma midfield and closed down the opposition quickly.

11 K. Coman - The Frenchman got one decent effort away in the first half but his end product was poor more often than not.

14 Llorente - Struggled to link the play with his back to goal and was unable to test Mirante himself.

Substitutes

9 Álvaro Morata
- Came on for Pereyra in the 62nd minute and failed to have a positive impact.

7 S. Pepe - Brought on for Sturaro in the 69th minute and was disappointing in possession.

24 M. Vitale - Replaced Coman in the 80th minute.

Juventus fall to dispiriting defeat
against Parma with Monaco looming

sp7q0m.jpg

Apr 12, 2015

It was what Massimiliano Allegri feared. It was what the fans feared. Arrogant Juventus underestimated their opponent and paid the price, suffering a humiliating 1-0 defeat at the hands of a Parma side that is not only is suffering the pain of bankruptcy proceedings, but is playing purely for their integrity and their fans.

Unpaid and betrayed, Parma have shown themselves to be honourable in a match that no longer retains its basic morals. A point against Juventus was a pipe dream; instead they walked away with a win, at home and in front of their proud fans. Let it be known that not even the "worst" side in Serie A rolls over and accepts their technical inferiority.

The tedious performance of the Old Lady was shocking. It was as if acceleration was a foreign concept in their style of football. Everything was slow. Movement lacked flavour and ideas came at a premium. The Gialloblu may not be a team that motivates the spirits so one can perhaps understand a less than inspired display but what cannot be tolerated are the amateur mistakes committed by the likes of Arturo Vidal, who has blown hot and cold all season.

The Chilean may never recover his brilliance but he has steadily improved in the past few months, showing a desire to expend forces for the sake of the side. Yet the manner in which he squanders possession with such ease is disconcerting. There is a little pain to be felt when one watches performances such as these from the player who defined Juve under Antonio Conte. He wasn't simply a warrior who ran relentlessly but a talented midfielder who recovered possession, took up the right possession and was ruthless with his touch, scoring an abundance of goals to appease the fans who idolised him.

Against Parma, Vidal attempted to create danger in the first half but soon vanished. If this is simply a bad year where one has to accept the mistakes, then the fans will. What cannot be forgiven, however, is the nonchalance and his lack of leadership in midfield -- Juventus deserve more from the man who used to lead by example.

Yet he wasn't the only man to disappoint; the whole team deserves criticism, in particular the forwards who failed to prove their worth. If Kingsley Coman and Fernando Llorente are struggling against a side that had picked up only 13 points in the league prior to this match, how can they be entrusted to face better opposition? In essence the two don't work together and were hardly helped by a lethargic and disinterested midfield. Not even Alvaro Morata could change proceedings when he was thrown on in an attempt to salvage a point.

With Monaco coming up in the Champions League quarterfinals and a win not really required on Saturday, the Old Lady felt the absence of her leaders -- the men who make the difference. Talk of the match will always focus on the Bianconeri's malaise, and perhaps deservedly so, yet one has to congratulate the mental fortitude and sacrificial spirit of Roberto Donadoni's men. Playing without their captain, Alessandro Lucarelli, they defended in organised fashion and went for their chances, counterattacking with danger when the opportunity presented itself.

Producing only nine shots on goal (of which only one was on target), the Gialloblu were allowed to rejoice after months of depression. Picking up seven points in their last three matches against Inter, Udinese and Juventus, they deserve a thousand compliments for never giving in.

As for Allegri, he was right to be angry. Juve's greatest quality is their humility and ability to fight against criticism. They have shown hunger and pushed for glory in recent months, breaking down psychological barriers. They mustn't get carried away now and believe in their own hype; insipid performances such as the one against Parma will not be tolerated in Europe and they will be punished.

At times it's hard to motivate a squad who hold such an advantage in the league and one has to accept such defeats. If Juve's minds were on Monaco, then one hopes they will rebound quickly and guarantee a victory on Tuesday night.

Parma 1-0 Juventus: Bianconeri shocked
by bankrupt Parma at the Tardini

A brilliant strike by José Mauri hands the Old Lady their second loss of the league season.

Apr 12, 2015

Who would have thought, given the unmitigated disaster that has been Parma's season so far, that Juventus -- runaway league leaders and champions-elect -- would come a cropper at the Stadio Ennio Tardini. Most likely no one, as even with their decent form of late, Parma are still not very good. It seemed very safe to assume that a Juventus win was a given, even with a number of reserves filling in for some of the established players.

But, as the saying goes, "When you assume, you make an ass of you and me." Juventus were shocked and, admittedly, deservedly beaten. Parma, ultimately playing just for pride as they will definitely be relegated to Serie B, were quick and incisive for the most part. They caused us numerous problems on the counter-attack (a well-known problem that we have had for a while). Though they gave up chances to us, between some brave defending and top goal-keeping from former Juve bench-warmer (and Zach Braff lookalike) Antonio Mirante, they kept Juventus off the score sheet.

It's hard to know what to make of this loss. On one hand, Juventus definitely did not play up to their recent standards, though we were terrible. In the form we were in, we should have won this easily. On the other hand, we can't blame the reserve players who have largely done well when called upon this season, including in the recent good run of form.

Il Mister, Massimiliano Allegri, was rightfully annoyed at the performance and had choice words after the match. The good news is that this loss only delays rather than derails Juve's charge towards our fourth consecutive Scudetto. Even with a Roma win tomorrow, Juventus will remain 11 points ahead, which barring a momentous collapse is an insurmountable lead.

It may be best to just write this off and move on. Monaco are up next and the focus needs to quickly turn to that match. It's been the case recently that when Juve have these types of losses, it acts as a positive shake-up and they get back to the business of dominating all their way. Let's hope that starts with Monaco on Tuesday.

But hey, for those English Premier League fanboys who like to trumpet that the EPL is the best league because "anyone can beat anyone else on any day", how you like dem apples?

MATCH SUMMARY

Parma started the match stronger, but failed to make the early pressure count; their best chance being offside as Abdel Ghezzal tried to get on the end of Cristóbal Jorquera's deflected shot. Juventus' first chance came on fifteen minutes; a surging run by Stefano Sturaro saw the ball fall to Claudio Marchisio at the top of the box, whose shot was deflected up by Zouhair Feddal and caught by Mirante. On twenty minutes, a counter attack saw Inter reject Ishak Belfodil elude Giorgio Chiellini on the right before cutting inside the same defender and firing a left-footed shot, forcing a save from stand-in Marco Storari.

Juve's best chance of the first half came on thirty-two minutes; a free kick was clipped to the far post by Marchisio for Arturo Vidal's late run, his header forcing Mirante into a brilliant kick save. Kingsley Coman got into the match, creating a chance for himself on fourty-two minutes and forcing another kick save out of Mirante.

Some neat play between Marchisio, Vidal and Fernando Llorente saw the big Spaniard lay off for the oncoming Marchisio for a one tim left-footed shot from the top of the box, which went wide of the far post on fifty-five minutes. Coman again created an opening for himself, this time cutting in from the right wing into the middle and firing high and wide with his left.

The game's goal came on the hour mark. Chiellini failed to intercept a pass by Ghezzal on the counter, which resulted in the ball getting to Belfodil out on the right, who - after being given too much space by Angelo Ogbonna - rolled across for the onrushing Mauri to put a left footed shot into the top corner past Storari's dive. It was a lovely finish to a wonderful move, but could have been avoided with some better defending.

Parma tried to go for a second, with Silvestre Varela having a shot charged down on seventy-four minutes. Juve's last real chance came from Vidal's header on eighty-five minutes. Neither team could score, and the match ended 1-0 in favour of the Gialloblu.

PLAYER RATINGS

Storari: 6 Did not have a lot to do with Parma only having one shot on target and all; unfortunately for him, that one shot was the goal.

Lichtsteiner: 6 Didn't do much wrong in this GAME. Was typically dogged, getting up and down the right flank. Could have done more offensively.

Chiellini: 6 His missed interception turned into an inadvertent assist on Parma's goal; another costly error of note this season. Was also given trouble by Belfodil's pace in the first half. Another sub-par game.

Ogbonna: 6 His lack of pace was exposed on a few occasions. Also gave Belfodil way too much space to lay off for José Mauri on Parma's goal.

Padoin: 5.5 An expected Padoin-esque performance, and one couldn't have expected more.

Vidal: 6 A solid shift by Arturo. Has been looking better on a more consistent basis in the lost couple of months, and got into a few good positions with late runs today. The goals have dried up, however, which was a big part of what made him so dangerous and coveted.

Marchisio: 6 Likewise, a solid shift by Claudio. Passed well and his movement off the ball was very good. Continues to pick up needless yellow cards and did so again today.

Sturaro: 5 An average performance by the youngster, who is honestly yet to impress and show why Juve ended his LOAN at Genoa early. Just making up the numbers at the moment.

Pereyra: 5.5 The Argentine has been a good form recently, but put in a so-so performance today. Unsurprisingly hooked for Alvaro Morata.

Coman: 6 A rare start for the 18 year old, and a decent showing. Made a couple decent chances for himself and showed his undoubtedly quality and potential.

Llorente: 5 Played the full 90, but didn't even get a shot on goal. Was involved in some attacking plays, but he's not giving much reason for the fans to want him to stay. Not scoring is one thing, but Fernando generally does not even look threatening. Allegri needs to work this out or get rid of him in the summer.

Subs

Morata: 5
Surprisingly quiet when he came on, not being too involved in the creation of chances.

Pepe: 5 As with Padoin, Pepe gave the type of performance that one would expect from him - complete with wayward/blocked crosses. In all fairness, you can't expect much from a player who's in the squad to keep spirits up.

Vitale: N/A Replaced fellow youngster Coman with only 10 minutes to go.

Coach

Allegri: 5.5
Personally, I find it a bit harsh to blame Allegri for this loss; to me it was just one of those matches. But I guess the coach should take blame for any loss suffered by a team. If there's one thing Allegri has shown this season though, is that he can get things back on track. Let's hope that starts with the Champions League first leg on Tuesday.

WEEK 30 PLAYER RATINGS

Juventus were stunned by Parma at the Stadio Tardini as they slipped to only their second league defeat of the season

The Bianconeri were without Carlos Tevez, Andrea Pirlo and Gianluigi Buffon but still fielded a strong starting XI as they faced a Parma side with one foot in Serie B.

Parma started the brighter but Juve took control of the game in the first half with Pereyra and Marchisio forcing saves from Mirante.

The Gialloblu pushed forward after the restart and their pressue paid off as Ishak Belfodil burst down the right and pulled back for Jose Mauri to strike.

Juve dominated possesssion for the remainder of the game but were unable to find a response.

Marco Storari 6.0 - Didn’t have any saves to make and couldn’t have saved Parma’s one opening goal

Stephan Lichtsteiner 6.0 - Won some valuable free kicks in the Parma half and spent much of the game in the opposition half without creating anything of note

Angelo Ogbonna 6.0 - Made some vital tackles but much like Chiellini, he was untroubled

Giorgio Chiellini 6.0 - Was caught out by some overhead balls but other than that, he had a comfortable game with precious little to do

Simone Padoin 6.0 - Comfortable in possesion, defended well enough but offered little else

Arturo Vidal 6.0 - Forced a good save from Mirante with his header but was quiet for the much of the second half

Claudio Marchisio 6.0 - Kept the side ticking over in midfield but contributed little else

Stefano Sturaro 5.5 - Not his best game, positioninally speaking. Was caught out a few times and played his part in Parma’s opening goal

Roberto Pereyra 6.0 - One of the few bright sparks in an otherwise dreary afternoon. Some good runs forward and some decent tackles as well as a decent effort that forced a save from Mirante.

Kingsley Coman 6.0 - One decent effort of note but little else

Fernando Llorente 5.5 - Had his chances to make something but wasted a few half chances and spent the match with his back to goal.

Substitutes

Alvaro Morata N/A

Mattia Vitale N/A

Simone Pepe N/A

Moutinho: 'Juve favourites like Arsenal'

Apr 12, 2015

Monaco star Moutinho points out Juventus might be favourites in the Champions League quarter-final, “but so were Arsenal.”

The first leg is played in Turin on Tuesday evening and a spot in the final four is at stake.

“The Bianconeri have a great team, even without Paul Pogba, with formidable players and a solid team ethic,” Moutinho told Tuttosport.

“They are the favourites to reach the semi-final, but Arsenal were the favourites against us and we still eliminated them.

“We’ll do anything to win in Turin and then the home leg, so we must be concentrated for the full 180 minutes. I think we’ll have to double our efforts.”

Monaco eliminated Arsenal thanks to a 3-1 victory in London, which saw them through on away goals despite losing the second leg 2-0.

Jeremy Toulalan is a major injury doubt after hobbling off during the 3-0 win at Caen on Friday.

“Obviously it’d be better if he recovers, but if not then we have others who can fill in for him.

“Who is the most dangerous Juve player? I’d say Carlos Tevez, as he is so strong and determined. Any distraction could be lethal.

“I’ve never played at the Juventus Stadium, but they tell me there’s a great atmosphere. The stadium could also do well for us and I hope our fans will show their passion in the second leg.

“We want to reach the Final and will give 200 per cent to reach our objective.”
