The Juventus squad escaped unharmed after a paper bomb was thrown at the team bus by a Bologna fan ahead of their Serie A clash on Friday evening.

Juve players were leaving the vehicle outside the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara when one of the home supporters threw the bomb, which exploded approximately one metre away from captain Gianluigi Buffon.

Neither the goalkeeper nor his team-mates were injured and the bus suffered no damage, although the Italian champions were visibly shaken by the incident, which took place shortly before the start of the match.

It is still unknown whether officials will investigate the matter and explore potential sanctions against Bologna for failing to control their fans.

Juve are seeking to extend their winning streak to 16 games against Roberto Donadoni's side, having been unbeaten in their last 12 visits to the Dall'Ara.

HT 0-0: Bologna scare Juventus

Feb 19, 2016

Bologna arguably had the best chance of the first half, as they are holding leaders Juventus to a stalemate.

The Bianconeri went top of the table with last week’s win over Napoli, a club record 15th consecutive Serie A victory, and had to maintain it while preparing for Tuesday’s Champions League showdown with Bayern Munich. Giorgio Chiellini, Sami Khedira, Mario Mandzukic, Alex Sandro, Kwadwo Asamoah and Martin Caceres were unavailable, but Leonardo Bonucci played despite a knock to the knee. Roberto Pereyra was given his first start since October. Bologna missed Luca Rossettini, but Antonio Mirante returned two weeks after a thigh injury.

Patrice Evra nodded a corner just wide of the far post, but Gigi Buffon had his gloves stung by a Matteo Destro screamer and Godfred Donsah blasted the follow-up off target.

Evra turned over under pressure from Ibrahima Mbaye, while Domenico Maietta bravely got his head in the way of a Simone Zaza volley.

Bologna 0-0 Juventus (Half-Time)

Bologna: Mirante; Mbaye, Maietta, Gastaldello, Masina; Donsah, Diawara, Taider; Rizzo, Destro, Giaccherini

Juventus: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Bonucci, Evra; Sturaro, Marchisio, Pogba; Pereyra; Zaza, Morata

Bologna 0-0 Juventus: Plucky minnows
halt champions' winning run

The Bianconeri struggled without the presence of top scorer Paulo Dybala
and never looked as if they would find a way through.

Juventus were unable to break down Bologna's resistance on Friday night, failing to extend their lead at the top of Serie A after only managing a 0-0 draw.

The Bianconeri were chasing their 16th consecutive victory but found themselves evenly matched by the hosts as Massimiliano Allegri's decision to rest Paulo Dybala from the starting XI proved costly.

Early chances fell the way of Roberto Donadoni's men, in fact, with Juventus' best chances arriving in the second half via Paul Pogba.

However, the No.10 proved wasteful on three occasions after the break and the chance for the champions to extend their lead at the summit to four points ultimately went begging.

Patrice Evra came close for Juve early on when he beat his marker to the ball after Claudio Marchisio's corner from the left, but the Frenchman's header went just wide.

Bologna looked dangerous on the break and Destro nearly surprised Gianluigi Buffon with a powerful shot from outside the area that the experienced goalkeeper did just enough to keep out, with Godfred Donsah guilty of wildly blasting the rebound wide.

Evra got another opportunity when Pogba headed a corner into his path at the half-hour mark, but the former Manchester United defender failed to get his shot on target from close range.

Referee Massimiliano Irrati awarded Bologna a free-kick in a dangerous position shortly after the break that Emanuele Giaccherini aimed too high.

Pogba could have broken the deadlock for Juventus in the 54th minute after some great work from Stephan Lichtsteiner down the right, but he volleyed inches wide after the Switzerland international's good cross.

Destro tried his luck with a free-kick from 20 yards out with 15 minutes left on the clock, yet the former Roma man's attempt went harmlessly over.

Marchisio found Pogba with a sublime pass late on as Juventus went in search of a late winner, only for the Frenchman to fire wide from a difficult angle.

The duo again combined in the 89th minute, but Pogba was frustrated by a fine save from Antonio Mirante this time around as it ended 0-0.

Bologna

83 A. Mirante - Hardly had a save to make until late on, but even the final push from Juventus didn't trouble him much.

15 I. Mbaye - Juventus hardly posed much of a threat down the flank, which allowed him to get forward at times, though it never amounted to much.

20 D. Maietta - Kept close watch of Zaza and did brilliantly to frustrate the physical striker.

28 D. Gastaldello - Didn't put a foot wrong at the back and was a force to be reckoned with in the air.

25 A. Masina - Defended the flank admirably, affording little space to the visiors before being replaced for the final 20 minutes.

30 G. Donsah - A fiery character in midfield, running with a full head of steam and closing down his gaps superbly. Shadowed Pogba admirably.

21 A. Diawara - Read the game well from deep, providing excellent cover for the back line and did well to disrupt Juventus' rhythm in possession.

8 S. Taïder - Played some quality balls forward to kick-start counters, and managed to frustrate the Bianconeri in possession.

22 L. Rizzo - Tracked back well but it came at the expense of his attacking presence. Left Destro isolated and was unable to offer much. Replaced just past the hour mark.

10 M. Destro - Far too isolated up top and was starved of service. A strike from 30-yards out forced Buffon into a sharp save in the first half, the best effort of the night for either side.

17 E. Giaccherini - Grew into the game in the second half, but wasn't able to see enough of the ball to punish Juventus. Won a few free-kicks, however, for his side.

Substitutes

26 A. Mounier
- Limited looks in attack after replacing Rizzo.

19 K. Constant - A bit careless with his tackling, but hardly missed a beat at the back.

23 F. Brienza - Late inclusion in midfield to help see out the draw.

Juventus

1 G. Buffon - Had just one save to make, parrying Destro's effort from range.

26 S. Lichtsteiner - Picked out Pogba with a teasing ball early in the second half, but was otherwise anonymous going forward.

19 L. Bonucci - Rarely put a foot wrong at the back and was responsible in possession.

15 Andrea Barzagli - Didn't have much to do defensively, keeping Destro in his back pocket.

33 P. Evra - Put in a flawless showing at the back, but needed to provide much more support on the overlap for Pogba.

27 S. Sturaro - Struggled to find space on the flank and was limited in possession.

8 C. Marchisio - Picked out some decent passes, including one late for Pogba that could well have resulted in the winner. Helped suffocate Bologna's many attempts to counter.

10 P. Pogba - All over the pitch and was a constant figure in attack, but his end product was lacking.

37 R. Pereyra - Unable to ask questions of the Bologna defence, struggling to find pockets of space in attack before being replaced at the interval.

7 S. Zaza - Service was inconsistent at best, and he worked hard to try and get on the ball, though was largely unsuccessful. Replaced for the final 20 minutes.

9 Álvaro Morata - Finally tested Mirante late on, though it came via a strike that was heading wide anyways. Generally kept on the periphery throughout.

Substitutes

16 J. Cuadrado
- Provided a bit more width, but couldn't pick out the decisive final ball.

21 P. Dybala - Saw little of the ball and struggled to influence the match after replacing Zaza.

Bologna 0-0 Juventus: Fiery Rossoblu
Stop The Old Lady’s Winning Streak

Bologna drew 0-0 with Juventus at the Stadio Renata Dall’Ara on Friday night.

In the first-half neither side were able build up a head of steam and the two teams went into the interval with the game scoreless.

The second-half continued in the same vain, and despite the Bianconeri getting desperate towards the end of the match, they couldn’t find a winner.

After a rather tepid start to the match it was Juventus who created the first meaningful chance. A corner was swung in by Claudio Marchisio and Patrice Evra somehow managed to get a free header, yet he arrowed his effort wide.

However, Bologna were looking impressive, and they almost took the lead when Mattia Destro cutely turned Marchisio and fired a stinging and swerving shot, which was palmed away by Gianluigi Buffon.

The rebound came out to Godfred Donsah, but he rushed his shot and fired miles wide.

However, apart from this, both sides attacking play lacked coherence and frankly quality. As a result chances came at a premium.

Like the opening 45 minutes, the start to the second-half was lukewarm. Yet, the Bianconeri awoke when Stephan Lichtsteiner fired in a low cross to Paul Pogba, but the mercurial Frenchman on the half-volley drove his shot wide.

Both sides defences were on top form and going into the last 20 minutes of the match, Pogba’s effort was the only chance of the half.

In the 83rd minute Marchisio played a superb ball to Pogba, to put the former Manchester United player within sight of goal. But after a fine first touch, he miserably sliced his shot wide.

Juventus were piling on the pressure and Alvaro Morata was the next player to have an effort denied by Antonio Mirante. However, it wasn’t to be The Old Lady’s 16th win in a row as they failed to find the winner.

The result leaves Bologna in ninth place, whereas Juventus stay top of Serie A, temporarily two points above Napoli.

Bologna end Juve record

Bologna brought an end to the 15-round winning streak,
as Juventus were held to a goalless draw at the Dall’Ara.

Max Allegri changed system at the break, introducing Juan Cuadrado for trequartista Pereyra in more of a 4-4-2.

Bonucci did well to intercept a Godfred Donsah chipped pass for Destro in the six-yard box, while Paul Pogba’s volley from 10 yards was just wide of the near stick.

Buffon plucked an Adam Masina cross-shot out of the far top corner, but Juventus were still not making a breakthrough, so Paulo Dybala replaced Zaza. Masina went off injured for the hosts.

Destro curled a free kick over the bar and Pogba turned wide, but was ruled offside anyway. The midfielder had another great opportunity in the final minutes, but scuffed his finish wide of the near post after springing the offside trap.

Giaccherini volleyed over and Mirante had his first save after 86 minutes of football, palming a Morata shot on the turn round the base of the near post, though it might’ve been going wide anyway.

Pogba’s cross-shot flashed along the six-yard box and Cuadrado was just unable to make contact for a tap-in because Mirante got a fingertip to it.

The Turin giants hit a brick wall for the first time since October 28 - the same day Roberto Donadoni was appointed at Bologna.

Bologna
Mirante; Mbaye, Maietta, Gastaldello, Masina (Constant 73); Donsah, Diawara, Taider (Brienza 81); Rizzo (Mounier 65), Destro, Giaccherini

Juventus
Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Bonucci, Evra; Sturaro, Marchisio, Pogba; Pereyra (Cuadrado 46); Zaza (Dybala 68), Morata

Player Ratings: Bologna 0-0 Juventus

Bologna held Juventus to a commendable 0-0 score at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara in their Friday evening Serie A fixture.

The result ends the Old Lady’s winning streak in Serie A, after attempts by Paul Pogba and Patrice Evra were dealt with by the Rossoblu. Godfred Donsah and Mattia Destro came close to causing an upset, but neither side could make their chances count.

Bologna

Antonio Mirante – 6.5 – Resolute - Showed early confidence, attempting a cheeky turn with Simone Zaza pressuring him. Forced into making a late save to deny Alvaro Morata but, like Gianluigi Buffon at the other end, was largely untested.

Ibrahima Mbaye – 6 – Average - Struggled with the physicality of the Juventus strikers and the trickery of Paul Pogba. Grew into the game but couldn’t afford to go too far forward on the counter attack.

Domenico Maietta – 6.5 – Tough - Withstood an accidental kick to the head from Simone Zaza, remained resolute for much of the game and showed a great understanding with Gastaldello.

Daniele Gastaldello – 6.5 – Solid - Used all his experience to keep both Alvaro Morata and Simone Zaza in check, yellow carded for a foul on Roberto Pereyra.

Adam Masina – 6.5 – Unlucky - A threat with his early crosses and speed coming forward from the back, picked up a knock late in the match and was replaced by Constant.

Godfred Donsah – 6.5 – Commanding - Squandered a great chance to give the hosts the lead, blasting a saved effort from Destro past the post. Put in the hard yards, tracking the Juventus players as they moved forward.

Amadou Diawara – 6.5 – Engine - Covered a lot of ground and combined well with Donsah in the middle of the park. Didn’t involve himself as much in the attack as the Ghanaian, but certainly made the ground and a number of important tackles. Yellow carded for a late foul on Marchisio.

Saphir Taider – 6 – Decent - Battered and bruised his way through the game, winning back possession and looking for the killer pass. Saw his attacking role restricted as Bologna looked to hang on in the dying minutes. Replaced by Brienza in the last ten minutes.

Luca Rizzo – 6 – Tricky - Full of determination, making quick feints and twists on the ball to keep the Juventus defenders guessing. Moved the ball around intelligently but couldn’t add more in the attacking third. Made way for Mounier after the hour.

Mattia Destro – 6.5 – Stubborn - Had Gianluigi Buffon scrambling with a well-struck effort outside the box, but the veteran keeper parried it back into play. Saw very little of the ball, sending a late free kick over the bar in a decent position. Difficult to wrestle off the ball and used his strength.

Emanuele Giaccherini – 6.5 – Pacy - The former Juventus man was a menace with his speed and body feints, drawing fouls from his former teammates. A tad indecisive once he got himself into a good position, but helped his side claim the point all the dame.

Substitutes

Anthony Mounier – 6
– Replaced Rizzo after the hour mark, added fresh legs but couldn’t contribute anything in attack as the hosts tried to claim a point.

Kevin Constant – 6 – Calming - Stepped in for the stricken Masina late in the game, played an important role in the dying minutes matching Juan Cuadrado for pace.

Franco Brienza – N/A - Brought on to help hold the fort in the dying minutes.

Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon – 6 – Spectator - Called into action early on, parrying the shot from Mattia Destro back into play; breathing a sigh of relief when Godfred Donsah hit the rebound wide. Had just the one touch in the second half and was largely untested.

Stefan Lichtsteiner – 6.5 – Determined - Worked tirelessly in all areas, dropping back to cover Barzagli and putting in dangerous crosses at the other end. Nearly set up Pogba but the Frenchman put his shot just wide.

Andrea Barzagli – 5.5 – Slow - Struggled at times with the pace of the Bologna attackers, but had increasingly little to do with Bologna looking to hold the Bianconeri to a draw.

Leonardo Bonucci – 5.5 – Careless - Started the game despite the upcoming Champions League fixture, rarely troubled and could arguably have sat this one out. Escaped a booking for a terrible challenge on Mattia Destro.

Patrice Evra – 6.5 – Inspired - Had a shot in the area following a free kick, but saw it deflected out for a corner. Came forward time and time again with his side needing a goal.

Stefano Sturaro – 6.5 – Tireless - Was in the wars early on when the ball struck him on the head, but continued none the less. Yellow carded for a trip on Emanuele Giaccherini. Kept his side motoring in the midfield and ran himself into the ground.

Claudio Marchisio – 6 – Unrewarded - Tried to pull the strings for the visiting side. Shown a yellow card before half time for fouling Emanuele Giaccherini. Didn’t have the effect he would liked to have had on the game, but a lack of movement up front may have been a factor.

Paul Pogba – 6 – Fuming - Had a quiet first half, growing frustrated with the referee after decisions didn’t go his way. More lively after the restart, coming close to converting a great cross from Lichsteiner. Blazed over one final chance in the dying minutes when Marchisio found him in the box.

Roberto Pereyra – 5.5 – Indecisive - Largely ineffective, contributed little to the attack but put in a shift tracking back and winning the ball. Replaced by Cuadrado at half time.

Simone Zaza – 5.5 – Rash - Did little to impress in the first half with poor touches and dangerous attempts at winning the ball. Saw even less of the ball after the restart, was eventually replaced by Dybala.

Alvaro Morata – 5.5 – Disappointing - Grew increasingly annoyed with the treatment from the Bologna defenders, had the one shot saved by Antonio Mirante but was rarely involved in the game.

Substitutes

Juan Cuadrado – 6.5 – Energetic
- Brought on at half time for Pereyra with the result still in the balance, gave the visitors a different approach. Almost tapped in the ball after Pogba crossed to the back post, but Antonio Mirante got a hand to the ball.

Paulo Dybala – N/A - The Argentine replaced Zaza with his coach badly needing a goal, but couldn’t fashion an opportunity in the dying minutes.

Juventus's 15-game winning run in
Serie A ends with draw at Bologna

Juventus's 15-game winning run in Serie A came to an end on Friday night as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Bologna.

The Old Lady, who have failed to win in the Italian top flight for the first time since October, entered the match knowing that three points against the league's 10th-placed team would see them open up a four-point gap on second-placed Napoli.

A stern defensive performance from Roberto Donadoni's Bologna allowed the hosts to gain a point, however, against a Juventus team that only really had two serious chances throughout the 90 minutes.

Both of those came for Paul Pogba, but the Frenchman fired narrowly wide of the post from a Stephan Lichtsteiner cross in the 53rd minute, before seeing his dangerous low cross hacked clear by Antonio Mirante in the 89th minute.

Bologna's best chance of the match came for Mattia Destro in the first period, but the attacker's stinging drive was kept out by Gianluigi Buffon, who was rarely troubled throughout the 90 minutes.

Napoli will have the chance to return to the top of Serie A when they welcome AC Milan on Monday night.

Bonucci: 'Nothing decided yet'

nqtkyd.jpg

Feb 19, 2016

Leonardo Bonucci insists Juventus “didn’t win the Scudetto last week and haven’t lost it now” after a draw at Bologna.

The Bianconeri only went top on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Napoli, but their run of 15 consecutive Serie A wins came to a halt at the Stadio Dall’Ara.

“We didn’t win the Scudetto last week and we haven’t lost it now,” the defender told Mediaset Premium after a 0-0 draw.

“It’s going to be a long road ahead of us and we need to fight. We need everyone to be at 100 per cent so we can get there.

“We knew that Bologna were a great side, perhaps we made some mistakes in the final pass. From now on it will be an intense and important climb, we need to fight for every single point.”

Bonucci was asked whether Juve were distracted by the upcoming Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

“When you play a game that is worth the Scudetto, you don’t think about the one coming up next.

“Bayern will be a fascinating challenge and as the first leg is at the Juventus Stadium we need to have the right concentration.”

Juventus held by Bologna as 15-match
Serie A win streak comes to an end

14w699d.jpg

http://www.espnfc.co.uk/italian-serie-a/match/432014/bologna-juventus/report

Feb 19, 2016

Juventus dropped points for the first time in 16 league matches as Bologna held the Serie A leaders to a goalless draw at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.

The Old Lady had won every league game since an Oct. 28 loss to Sassuolo -- and 13 straight in all competitions -- but created little in their stalemate in northern Italy.

Manager Massimiliano Allegri left both 16-goal forward Paulo Dybala and winger Juan Cuadrado on the bench ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarterfinal clash with Bayern Munich and Juve carved out few openings in the pair's absence.

Patrice Evra twice came close in the opening exchanges while Paul Pogba lashed a couple of attempts wide and Cuadrado, on as a half-time substitute, almost reached a deflected cross at the back post late on.

But Juventus' run of 15 successive Serie A triumphs came to an end and they will now lose top spot on Monday if second-placed Napoli can defeat AC Milan too.

Ex-Manchester United full-back Evra found himself in advanced positions on a couple of occasions early on, heading wide from one corner before poking over as he stretched to meet Pogba's nod down.

At the other end Mattia Destro's long-range effort was pushed out by Gianluigi Buffon and Godfred Donsah smashed his first-time follow-up well wide when he had time to steady himself with a touch.

The visitors were posing little threat and it was no surprise to see Allegri turn to Chelsea loanee Cuadrado at the interval.

Juventus' next chance did come from down the right-hand side where Cuadrado was stationed, although it was from Stephan Lichtsteiner's cross that Pogba blasted a half-volley narrowly wide.

Dybala came on for the disappointing Simone Zaza with 22 minutes left and Juve found a sense of urgency in the closing moments.

Pogba picked up an inch-perfect pass from Claudio Marchisio in the area but lashed a left-footed try wide of the near post and Alvaro Morata's volley on the turn was kept out by home goalkeeper Antonio Mirante.

The stopper was needed again at the end to turn Pogba's cross between Morata and Cuadrado, who almost managed to flick the ball home as Juve's impressive run finally came to an end.

The result means that Napoli can return to the summit with a win on Monday night having only relinquished top spot following a loss to Juve in their most recent league fixture.

Donadoni: 'Could've hurt Juve more'

2popbg8.jpg

http://www.football-italia.net/80120/donadoni-couldve-hurt-juve-more?

Feb 19, 2016

Roberto Donadoni believes Bologna “could’ve done even better” after a 0-0 draw against leaders Juventus.

The Bianconeri had won every single Serie A game since October 28 – the same day Donadoni was appointed on the Rossoblu bench.

If the campaign had started on that day, Juve would still be top, but Bologna in fourth place.

“The lads did really well, even if at times we lacked a bit of confidence and character to do even better,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium and Sky Sport Italia.

“We have to focus on getting stronger. There are some big margins of improvement at individual and collective levels.

“All the lads I train have a great mentality and that is a big advantage for a Coach.”

Donadoni made some attacking substitutions in the second half, proving his ambition.

“I wanted the players to realise we were not suffering or under a lot of pressure because we were organised. I really like this mentality. I think we could’ve done more, as we often have problems in the final third.”

Since taking over from Delio Rossi, Bologna have beaten Napoli and Milan, holding Juventus, Roma, Fiorentina and Lazio to draws.

“Who are the Scudetto favourites? Both Napoli and Juve have what it takes to go all the way.”

Donadoni was asked if he sees himself on the Milan bench in future, returning to the club where he spent most of his playing career.

“Of course I am fond of Milan, but right now my reality is at Bologna.”

Allegri: 'Can't win them all'

2q8mu6g.jpg

Feb 19, 2016

Max Allegri concedes “you can’t win all the time” after Juventus saw their 15-round winning streak ended in Bologna.

The leaders saw their club record breaking run come crashing to a halt at the Stadio Dall’Ara, where for the first time in four years they failed to get a single shot on target.

“We started the game well, but tonight Bologna deserve a lot of credit for limiting our performance,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium and Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s disappointing we didn’t win, but we were coming from a run of 15 consecutive victories and Bologna are one of the form teams in Serie A right now. You can’t win all the time in football.

“We should’ve spread the play more and it was one of those games where the deadlock has to be broken by an incident.

“We kept another clean sheet and that is certainly important. Simone Zaza and Alvaro Morata did well, but there weren’t many spaces to play in tonight.”

The setback arrived straight after Juventus had gone top of the table for the first time this season. If Napoli beat Milan on Monday night, the Partenopei will recapture the leadership.

“These lads have been working so hard for three months and a hiccup can happen. Nothing has been decided yet,” continued Allegri.

“Obviously on Monday I’ll be cheering on Milan, but whatever happens then I am sure Juve will be fighting for the Scudetto to the very end.”

The attention now turns to Tuesday’s Champions League Round of 16 against Bayern Munich, above all the injury list.

“Mario Mandzukic is fine, Sami Khedira should return. We also hope that Giorgio Chiellini and Alex Sandro can recover quickly.

“We’ll need to be gritty, focused and realise it will be played over 180 minutes of football.”

Juventus 0 - Bologna 0: Initial
reaction and random observations

I feel like a lot of people come to this blog looking for tactical breakdowns after each and every match. Well, this isn't exactly going to be one of those posts. There's a very good reason for that: It was simple as simple gets against Bologna on Friday night, and the reason why Juventus' 15-game winning streak is now a 16-game unbeaten run is pretty easy to figure out from this point of view.

Juventus recorded all of 10 shots against Bologna. Juventus didn't put one single shot on target Friday night. Not one. They had close calls — including a couple in the final 15 or 20 minutes that went whizzing past the Bologna goal — but nothing truly of kind substance that trouble former Juve goalkeeper Antonio Mirante. Shots close to target, but nothing actually on target.

To score goals, you must, at the very least, test the opposing goalkeeper. And when it comes to peppering Mirante's gloves, the likes of Álvaro Morata, Simone Zaza and the rest of Juve's goal-scoring threats did absolutely none of it. Not one single bit.

James Horncastle ‎@JamesHorncastle
Bologna would be 4th if season began when they appointed Donadoni. No shots on target for Juve. Last time that happened? Nearly 5 yrs ago

Another easy thing to decipher from Friday night's game: Bolgona came to play. Juventus were there, but not exactly looking like the team that we've seen over the last couple of months during this lengthy winning streak. Juve couldn't break down Bologna, who routinely threw nine or 10 players behind the ball to simply clog up any kind of consistent pressure on the home side's goal.

Juventus simply had no answer. End of story.

You think somebody Alex Sandro would have been useful against Bologna with his ability to not just attack down the left flank, but also spin in crosses from the wing? What about Mario Mandzukic? Or Sami Khedira? Probably even Kwadwo Asamoah, right?

Unfortunately, none of those players were going to be on the pitch Friday night because of their respective reasons.

We'll probably Khedira back for Tuesday night's clash with Bayern Munich. It sounds like Mandzukic might face his former club, too. That will help surely, and in a game where you know Juve will want a goal or two knowing who the opposition is and where the second leg is going to be played.

But for now, I guess we just have to kinda shake our head at a frustrating draw that saw a historic winning streak come to an end with somewhat of a whimper.

I'll remind everybody of this, though: The world is not over just because of one draw. Juventus are still in first place. They may be back in second place by the time Napoli-Milan is over on Monday night. But hey, ripping off 15 straight wins, shooting up the table thanks to getting 45 points in the span of three and a half months,

Luca Cetta ‎@l_cetta
Bologna have taken points from Napoli, Milan, Roma, Lazio, Fiorentina and now Juventus. Tough team to beat.

And guess what? Napoli still has to play Bologna, too. You know what needs your team needs to do in April, Roberto Donadoni.

Random thoughts and observations

The refereeing in that game was rather ... interesting. I guess I'll just leave it at that even though I risk absolutely no kind of punishment from those who run Serie A because I just backhandedly criticized a ref..

Gigi Buffon made one save. It was really good. Continue as you were.

Paulo Dybala only has one goal in his last five appearances. I'm starting to get worried. (Not really. That was me being facetious.)

Roberto Pereyra, getting his first start since October, looked exactly like somebody who has played in about 25 minutes worth of game time in the last four or five months. There was nothing wrong with the idea of Max Allegri playing Pereyra from the start seeing as what players were available. But that's also the risk you take with having a player who has barely featured over such an extended period of time. There was bound to be rust — and Pereyra proved that to be true.

The downside of going with a 4-3-1-2 was that Juve had absolutely no width in the first half and caused Morata to drift outside to the left wing probably much than he should be doing. Allegri rightfully made the Pereyra-Juan Cuadrado sub coming out of halftime. It just didn't materialize into anything of substance.

Morata's decision making in this game was also ... interesting. I can't help but think a more in-form version of him would have attacked the goal with some kind of authority instead of either slowing up or passing it to a teammate like he did on a few occasions on Friday.

Lost in all the attention going toward Juve's offensive struggles against Bologna was the job Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli did defensively. It's pretty refreshing to see that Juventus' defense is continuing to roll right along even though Giorgio Chiellini is out injured.

Now we go off to pray to get as many of the injured players back before Bayern arrives in Turin. All the good injury-related vibes going Juventus' way couldn't help at this point, right?

Morata: 'Juve not feeling pressure'

25g70q1.jpg

http://www.football-italia.net/80122/morata-juve-not-feeling-pressure?

Feb 19, 2016

Alvaro Morata assures Juventus are not “feeling the pressure” after a 0-0 draw at Bologna, as they prepare for Bayern Munich.

The stalemate at the Stadio Dall’Ara ended their run of 15 consecutive Serie A victories.

“I am not happy with today’s game, as I cannot be satisfied with a draw,” the striker told Sky Sport Italia.

“On the other hand, we can’t win all the time and Bologna made it very difficult for us. Let’s not forget many big clubs have failed to get all three points here.

“Am I feeling the pressure when I don’t score? No, anyone who feels the pressure should not be at Juventus.”

Morata could well be benched on Tuesday if Mario Mandzukic returns for the Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

“It will be a very different type of game, but we will aim to win. The thought of that game did not affect our performance this evening. We are professionals and we know how to balance things out.”

Juventus' bus attacked with
small explosive device in Bologna

Feb 19, 2016

The team bus of Juventus was briefly attacked by Bologna fans before Friday night's game at the Renato Dall'ara Stadium.

Juventus CEO Giuseppe Moratta said a small explosive device was thrown at the bus while players were exiting. No one in Juventus' party was hurt and the bus was not damaged.

"It's always a problem getting into Bologna, somebody threw a paper bomb or a firecracker, I don't know which," Moratta told reporters before kickoff.

"It's not an act of civility, it goes against what should be a positive spirit this evening. It's an act of hooliganism and violence which has nothing to do with the real values of this match."

Bayern won't be scared
as Juventus bomb at Bologna

There were fireworks off the field but few on it as the Bianconeri's arsenal of attacking
weapons failed to fire in their final fixture before they face Pep Guardiola's men.

2lm1kb6.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/3276/serie-a/2016/02/19/20527372/-?

Feb 19, 2016

The night began with a bang. A loud one. Then, there were fireworks. Literally. However, there was nothing remotely explosive about Friday's scoreless draw between Bologna and Juventus. Not that the hosts minded. A draw against the league leaders represented yet another fine result for a Bologna side that would be fourth in Serie A if the season had started when Roberto Donadoni succeeded Delio Rossi at the end of October.

For Juventus, this was a worryingly flat performance ahead of next week's Champions League showdown with Bayern Munich. True, there were mitigating circumstances. Having a paper bomb hurled at their team bus by Bologna ultras before the game was hardly the ideal preparation for Massimiliano Allegri's men, who had arrived in Bologna without the likes of Mario Mandzukic, Giorgio Chiellini, Sami Khedira and Alex Sandro. Paulo Dybala was left on the bench, with one eye clearly on Tuesday's visit of Bayern. Without their creative spark, however, Juve's attacking arsenal failed to fire.

After the hysteria surrounding his late winner against Scudetto rivals Napoli, Simone Zaza failed dismally to advance his claims for a starting berth against Bayern before being hauled off after 67 uninspiring minutes. Alvaro Morata, meanwhile, endured another frustrating evening - it is now three goals in 23 appearances for the struggling Spaniard - and the hope must be that the Champions League will once again bring the best out of a man who played such a prominent role in the Old Lady's run to last season's final.

If Morata cut a forlorn figure at times, Pogba was the personification of frustration. Three times in the space of a few second-half minutes he threw his arms into the air in despair. First, he berated Stefano Sturaro for failing to give him the ball. Then, he appealed in vain to the referee for a non-existent foul after being fairly beaten to a bouncing ball by the impressive Amadou Diawara. By the time the Frenchman was cleanly stripped of possession with embarrassing ease by Anthony Mounier, Pogba looked around for someone to blame until he accepted that he need only look at himself.

Allegri may also wonder if he could have approached the game differently. The Juve boss insisted beforehand that this game was "crucial" in terms of the title race, acknowledging that "Napoli will not give us an inch". Yet his decision to start with star forward Dybala on the bench arguably sent out the wrong message to the rest of the squad. Actions speak louder than words.

Defensively, Juventus were once again excellent, affording Bologna just one shot on goal, meaning Gianluigi Buffon has now been tested just seven times in his last six Serie A outings. Furthermore, Juventus have now racked up nine clean sheets in a row and conceded just once in its 11 competitive matches in 2016 so far.

However, what will perturb Allegri is that his side did not manage a single shot on target at the Dall'Ara. Yes, Bologna have been in fine form of late but this is also a team that had gone seven games without a clean sheet at home, conceding at least twice in five of those fixtures. And yet Juve's blunt attack made Bologna's back line look impenetrable.

Leonardo Bonucci admitted that Juventus "did well in terms of possession but we were lacking something when it came to the final ball". Certainly, there was a distinct lack of creativity in the middle of the Juventus midfield, with Roberto Pereyra once again underlining that he is not - and never will be - a trequartista good enough to play for Juventus.

Indeed, Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola will have looked at Juve's performance at the Dall'Ara and seen absolutely nothing to fear. The Bianconeri may have suffered a bomb scare in Bologna but what awaits them in Turin next Tuesday night is a far more frightening prospect...... Really? .asd

Bologna vs. Juventus: Winners
and Losers from Serie A Match

21v61u.jpg

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2618097-bologna-vs-juventus-winners-and-losers-from-serie-a-match?

Feb 19, 2016

While next week’s Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich will undoubtedly be at the forefront of their minds, Juventus first needed to reinforce their position at the top of the standings by overcoming a rapidly improving Bologna.

The Bianconeri visited the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara on Friday evening, finding themselves trapped in a difficult 0-0 encounter that saw them fail to register a single shot on target over the course of 90 minutes.

It always appeared to be a problematic fixture for the Turin giants, with coach Massimiliano Allegri warning that the Felsinei must not be overlooked as he spoke to reporters at the traditional pre-match press conference.

“We absolutely mustn’t allow ourselves to think about Bayern, a game we’ll only focus on from Saturday morning onwards,” the Juve boss said. “The Bologna match is crucial for us because a win would take us four points above Napoli ahead of their game on Monday against Milan.”

Even with a raft of injuries and an ultimately disappointing result, they temporarily extended their advantage to two points, and what follows is a look at the winners and losers from the game, highlighting the best and worst performances from the Serie A clash.

Winner: Roberto Donadoni (Bologna)

The Bianconeri struggled here, but much of the credit must go to Roberto Donadoni as the Bologna boss continues to compile an impressive record. Since arriving earlier in the campaign, he has lost just six matches, with Juventus becoming the latest side to struggle against his much-improved team.

Since December, the club have recorded wins over Napoli and Milan, also holding Fiorentina to a draw as Donadoni’s impact becomes increasingly apparent.

Loser: Alvaro Morata (Juventus)

While Donadoni’s stock continues to rise, Alvaro Morata’s miserable campaign continued here as the Spanish striker struggled throughout the game. Giving the ball away repeatedly, he contributed to Juve’s complete lack of cutting edge, certainly never looking like breaking the deadlock at any point as he drifted wide on the left flank.

According to statistics courtesy of WhoScored.com, Morata was disposed six times, took just one shot and completed a meagre 36 passes in an abject display. Juve will need much better if they are to have any impact against Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening in Turin.

Winner: Amadou Diawara (Bologna)

Juventus may boast the likes of Juan Cuadrado and Paul Pogba in midfield, but both men were arguably outshone here by Amadou Diawara. The Bologna man—still only 18 years old—never looked phased by his opponents, breaking up play and repeatedly winning the ball back for the Felsinei.

Statistics provided by WhoScored.com show Diawara registered three tackles, one interception and completed one dribble in a hugely impressive display.

Winner: Claudio Marchisio (Juventus)

If Juventus took any credit from this outing, it was perhaps in the performance of Claudio Marchisio. The Turin native completed 91 pass attempts while making one tackle, three interceptions and one clearance, according to Who Scored.com’s figures.

Continually in the right place, he also blocked one Bologna shot attempt but was ultimately unable to help his side to victory.

Loser: Stefano Sturaro (Juventus)

Like Morata, Stefano Sturaro struggled to bring the required intensity and quality here, lacking the skill or incisive edge to make a difference. Often finding himself with time and space, the former Genoa man repeatedly turned the ball over in one of his worst games since joining the Bianconeri in January 2014.

Juventus not up to task as win streak
ends versus valiant Bologna side

http://www.espnfc.co.uk/club/juventus/111/blog/post/2811116/juventus-not-up-to-task-win-streak-ends-vs-valiant-bologna

Feb 20, 2016

It was bound to happen, Juventus' rivals were hoping for it, and with the Bayern Munich challenge coming up, it was almost to be expected. After managing 15 consecutive Serie A wins, the Bianconeri could only muster a draw against a spirited Bologna side who continue to impress under Roberto Donadoni. A 0-0 scoreline, the first time in four years the Old Lady's squad couldn't even manage a shot on target.

This is a Rossoblu side that defeated Milan, beat Napoli and held Roma. On Friday evening, Juventus found out why. Determined, physical and perfectly organised, the home side were excellent at frustrating their technically superior opponents. However, what was most impressive was the ambition shown by coach Donadoni, who has done wonders for the squad's self-esteem.

Had the Felsinei possessed better technique, they certainly would have scored, but their many individual errors, including misplaced passes and poor decision-making, made it difficult for them to penetrate an experienced Juve back line. Yet despite their flaws, they never lost the will to keep going, believing in their strength to spring a surprise, and having a coach on the sideline who makes offensive substitutions, despite the quality of the opponent, encouraged them even further.

Sadly for Juventus, they couldn't overcome the tight defending; there was simply no room to operate. Predictable with their style and narrow in the first half, the away squad struggled to create space for themselves and lure the opponent in a different direction. Bologna did well to close down all the spaces in the middle and on this occasion, the Bianconeri failed in to find another route to goal, perhaps distracted by their upcoming Champions League clash.

Allegri attempted to rectify the situation by changing to a 4-4-2 formation in the second half, removing a rusty Roberto Pereyra for Juan Cuadrado, but the Rossoblu's midfielders never gave up the fight, snatching a point from the game to keep Napoli's hopes of winning the Scudetto alive.

Player ratings

Gianluigi Buffon, 6
-- Always alert and focused, he came to the side's rescue to produce a good first-half save that denied Mattia Destro, and he wasn't really tested thereafter.

Stephan Lichtsteiner, 6 -- Played a very cautious game and did well defensively, but without his thrusts forward, the team looked very narrow.

Leonardo Bonucci, 6 -- Always capable of a foolish mistake or two, he can be a bit aggressive with his challenges and inaccurate when clearing the ball. But barring the odd mistake here and there, few are better at his role.

Andrea Barzagli, 7 -- Excellent as usual in reading the game, he spots trouble from a mile away and runs across the pitch to deny the opponent. Experienced and reliable.

Patrice Evra, 6 -- Certainly not the offensive threat Alex Sandro is, but the intelligence is there to see. Some great passes, and he came close to breaking the deadlock.

Stefano Sturaro, 6 -- His determination makes him interesting to watch, but his technique isn't the greatest and he must work on his accuracy. Gets into good positions and always fights for possession.

Claudio Marchisio, 6 -- Started off well but struggled thereafter to provide the quality required to control the game.

Paul Pogba, 6 -- An emotional player, when Pogba is frustrated, his game suffers. He doesn't have the composure required to keep calm and excel at the basics. He offers a beautiful demonstration of his technique on occasion, but he disappeared at certain moments of the game.

Roberto Pereyra, 5 -- Struggled to keep up with the requirements of the game and his intellect wasn't on show as it usually is, which is to be expected after the injury. Looking out of sync with the rest of the squad, he struggled to really push the team forward in his role as trequartista.

Alvaro Morata, 6 -- He made some excellent runs, was rather good at holding up the ball and fought hard to win possession, but the lack of space made it difficult for his particular talent to shine.

Simone Zaza, 6 -- His touch is heavy, and while he worked well with Morata in an attempt to overcome Bologna's tight defending, reading the game well on occasion, his execution was disappointing.

Substitutes

Juan Cuadrado, 6
-- Brought on in a bid to change tactics and exploit Bologna's weaknesses, the player moved well and always looks exciting, but he almost runs without direction. Needs to develop his understanding of the game.

Paulo Dybala, 6 -- His arrival on the pitch made no impact.

Max Allegri: 'It's disappointing
Juventus didn't win' against Bologna

Manager's comments after the draw at Bologna.

24mupf7.jpg

http://www.blackwhitereadallover.com/2016/2/20/11075228/max-allegri-disappointing-juventus-didnt-win-against-bologna

Feb 20, 2016

Juventus manager Max Allegri has maintained a level head throughout this down-and-up season. Earlier when Juve languished in the bottom half he called for patience, and when the Bianconeri's meteoric rise took them to the pinnacle of the Scudetto he called for calm. Nothing changed today.

Bologna became the team that halted the Juventus juggernaut and after fifteen consecutive wins, the Old Lady had a scoreless draw. Fans will be worried at how listless and rusty the team looked, just days ahead of what is one of the biggest games of the season with Bayern Munich coming to visit in the Champions League.

After today's draw where Juve failed to register a single shot on target, this is what Allegri had to say -

"We started the game well, but tonight Bologna deserve a lot of credit for limiting our performance.

"It's disappointing we didn't win, but we were coming from a run of 15 consecutive victories and Bologna are one of the form teams in Serie A right now. You can't win all the time in football.

"We should've spread the play more and it was one of those games where the deadlock has to be broken by an incident.

"We kept another clean sheet and that is certainly important. Simone Zaza and Alvaro Morata did well, but there weren't many spaces to play in tonight."

Napoli are in second place and could leapfrog the Bianconeri back into first place on goal difference if they can Beat Milan, Allegri's former employers, on Monday.

"These lads have been working so hard for three months and a hiccup can happen. Nothing has been decided yet.

"Obviously on Monday I'll be cheering on Milan, but whatever happens then I am sure Juve will be fighting for the Scudetto to the very end."

Juventus can now turn their attention to Bayern, and more importantly, the long injury list.

"Mario Mandzukic is fine, Sami Khedira should return. We also hope that Giorgio Chiellini and Alex Sandro can recover quickly.

"We'll need to be gritty, focused and realize it will be played over 180 minutes of football."

Despite Juventus having laboured to a 0-0 draw against Bologna on Friday night, there were still a number of positives to take from the match. Given the form of the home side since appointing Roberto Donadoni as coach, the point the Bianconeri took from the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara may yet prove to be a valuable one in the title race.

The performance was discussed at length in this previous post, but there is little doubt the best display in a Juve shirt came from Claudio Marchisio.

With the players ahead of him struggling to create an opening and repeatedly losing the ball, the midfielder was continually forced to recover it and launch another attack.

Juventus: Have failed to win a Serie A match for the first time since October, ending a run of 15 consecutive wins

Before the game, he had warned of the danger posed by the Felsinei, using an interview with Sky Italia (h/t BeIn Sports) to note their opponents would be more than ready for the reigning Italian champions thanks to their excellent coach:

Donadoni is doing a great job, as he had been doing with Parma in recent years. He's completely changed the way Bologna play but, above all, he's changed the motivations of the players.

So he's definitely put his stamp on this good Bologna side, who cause problems for everyone and will make things difficult for us.

The match would prove that to be a perfect assessment of the trip to Emilia-Romagna, but Marchisio did all he could to secure victory. His tactical awareness and neat distribution have become hallmarks of the Bianconeri under Massimiliano Allegri, and the coach once again oversaw a wonderful all-round display from the 30-year-old.

As the graphic in the tweet below highlights, his accuracy in picking out a team-mate was excellent, connecting with 91 of his 100 pass attempts on the night. Marchisio managed seven crosses and two shots on goal—both were blocked—while finding success on the three occasions he took on a defender.

Adam Digby ‎@Adz77
Claudio Marchisio #BolognaJuve 91/100 passes, 1 tackle, 3 int, 7 ball recoveries, 3/3 take-ons (via @StatsZone)

Yet it was without the ball when he truly shone, winning one tackle, making three interceptions and blocking one shot. That he did so while recovering the ball seven times, winning the one aerial duel he contested and committing just a single foul shows the intelligence of a player who is vital to Juve's approach.

What makes that even more impressive is to do so, Marchisio has completely altered his own style of play to benefit the team. Earlier in his career, the Turin native was a marauding box-to-box midfielder, regularly arriving in the box to score or create goals in huge matches for the Bianconeri.

Indeed, he netted 10 times in 2011/12 and followed up with eight a year later, only to then become the holding player alongside Andrea Pirlo in former coach Antonio Conte's system. That freed up Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal to attack more regularly, with both men better suited to that role rather than taking on defensive duties.

But last term began with Pirlo injured, and while Conte had often deployed Pogba whenever the bearded genius was absent, his successor decided a different approach was needed and opted to hand the reigns to Marchisio instead.

He never looked back, with statistics courtesy of WhoScored.com showing the ease at which he adapted to the new position. Marchisio averaged 48.8 passes per game in 2013/14 but increased that to 61.3 last season, completing an impressive 86.1 percent of those attempts while still protecting the defence behind him.

Indeed, Marchisio’s tenacious tackling meant that, by the end of the campaign, he was arguably even more effective than Pirlo, and the side has not notably missed the 2006 World Cup winner this year.

They will need the local boy at his best next week as they welcome Bayern Munich to Juventus Stadium, but he will certainly be ready for the challenge.

Despite End To Winning Run

Juventus striker Alvaro Morata admitted he was happy to come away from a difficult game at Bologna with a point after a 0-0 draw.

The Vecchia Signora’s 15 game streak was snapped by the stalemate at the Stadio Renato dall’Ara.

“It was a difficult game,” he told Mediaset Premium, “the big teams have lost here and we have had so many victories.”

“It was not easy, but we have one point more and it is important to get points as there are so many matches and the season is so long.”

“We never think of the games that we are not playing in, but you cannot always win and this is an important point because Bologna are not an easy team”

Despite the Bianconeri failing to find the target, Morata went on to defend both himself and his fellow forwards.

“I’m fine, I feel good,” he explained, “I’m trying to do what the coach tells me. Today was a difficult match for everyone as we have to keep winning, we have an opportunity to win the title and we have to carry on.”

“Drawing a game doesn’t put any doubt on the attackers, I don’t think there are any problems, but have to work hard to get a goal.”

Gotze: 'Juve hard nut to crack'

http://www.football-italia.net/80127/gotze-juve-hard-nut-crack?

Feb 20, 2016

Mario Götze warns Bayern Munich that their Champions League rivals Juventus “will be a hard nut to crack.”

The giants face off on Tuesday in Turin for the first leg of their Round of 16 tie.

“You have to be ready in the moments that count. I can tell you we are. We know Juve will be a hard nut to crack,” the German told Chinese news agency Xinhua.

There are several injury problems for Bayern, above all in defence with Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez.

It remains to be seen whether Mehdi Benatia, Franck Ribery or Götze himself will be fit to start on Tuesday.

“I'm feeling fine at the end of my third week training with the team and, much more, I'm looking forward to my first game in the Bundesliga this weekend after being injured for several months.

“Of course it's not ideal but we have to deal with the situation, and that is important, we are determined to reach the next round.

“We are confident enough to be positive. We want to make it to the next round and in the end reach the Final.

“Looking at this year there are two possible finals we have in our minds, the Champions League final and the German Cup, and of course the fourth consecutive German title for Bayern Munich and the European Championship in summer with the German national team.

“If you ask me, great months are ahead of us. I'm really looking forward to everything.”

Guardiola has already announced he will leave at the end of the season for Manchester City and his replacement at Bayern Munich is Carlo Ancelotti.

“You read a lot positive things about him, but I personally have no experience of him. You hear he is a great and special Coach.

“I recently spoke with Toni Kroos about Ancelotti as he knows him from Real Madrid. He was totally positive about him.

“Fact is: I'm looking forward to working with him in summer. But in the end, you have to wait until you work together with someone to be able to say something about him.”

THE LOWDOWN ON TODAY’S BAYERN MUNICH

http://www.juvefc.com/the-lowdown-on-todays-bayern-munich/?

Feb 20, 2016

FC Bayern München has changed much since the last meeting with Juventus in 2013. This guest post’s mission is to explain how.

Under Jupp Heynckes’ tutelage, the Reds beat Juve 4:0 on aggregate with a brand of football that could be labeled as direct and vertical.

Bayern then was comfortable with more or less 55% possession, attacking on the wings with magicians Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben. They would dribble against defenders and either shoot or look for passing targets in free-roaming Thomas Müller and striker Mario Mandukic. Full-backs Philipp Lahm and David Alaba, would send exquisite crosses to Mandžukić.

A robust midfield was anchored by Bastian Schweinsteiger, who was in charge of distribution and of supporting the attack by following ball carriers closely. His “double six” partner Javi Martínez was the destroyer who absorbed counterattacking pressure. He won the ball back and helped relaunch the attack.

With Philipp Lahm, Jérôme Boateng and David Alaba, the back four was the best in the world. The back line received the help of Ribéry and Robben who frequently tracked back to shut down attacks.

Although possession-based, Bayern’s playing style was direct. Execution in tight space was a trademark of the Bavarian powerhouse, leading it to destroy even FC Barcelona en route to a Champions League win.

Change of philosophy

Enter Pep Guardiola. His philosophy is more ideological than Heynckes’. He believes in total control of the action and positional play. His hunch is that FCB does not play well without the ball.

With this philosophy, possession skyrocketed to over 60% in most games. It sometimes reached a dizzying 80%!

This game plan however backfires against the big teams. To execute Guardiola’s tactics, Bayern has to send its defenders high on the pitch, collectively entering the final third. Teams put 10 or 11 men behind the ball and look for counterattacking opportunities.

When it happens, one defender has to take break up the play before ball carrier can pass to other rushing teammates. This is how Bayern has conceded costly goals in Champions League semis against Madrid and Barcelona in the last two years.

Guardiola’s ideology put an end to verticality and most teams took notice. They defend and defend to death, making many wins lacklustre.

Injuries galore

A weakness Juventus should look to exploit is Bayern’s bill of health, which is not clean. Key players such as Jérôme Boateng, Javí Martinez, Holger Badstuber are missing. The team only has one healthy centre-back and it is recently signed Serdar Tasci. He started his Bavarian career with a concussion suffered in training!

The current makeshift back line is untested against dangerous teams. Will it crack under pressure?

CoCo power

Injuries also affect the precious wings. Arjen Robben is picking up speed after numerous spells on the sidelines. Franck Ribéry has just returned to the squad and he is not 100% fit yet.

Beware, however, of a duo that we lovingly nickname CoCo.

Douglas Costa was signed last summer and he provides an impressive offensive spark. His superior speed and athleticism allow him to burn full-backs mainly on the left flank, finding space for a good cross to the penalty area. Anyone rushing towards goal will try to meet the ball and squeeze it past the keeper.

The other half of this duo is a familiar name: Kingsley Coman. The young Frenchman is a surprising revelation. He does not have Costa’s pure speed, but he is more intelligent on the ball. He takes on defenders and works around them, finding spaces to make great passes to his teammates. He usually patrols the right flank.

The two players can however swap positions and drift inside at will.

A year or two ago, Bayern’s attacking would come to a screeching halt with injuries to Ribéry and Robben. With CoCo in the lineup, this is not the case anymore. Although untested in the Champions League knockout stage, the pair has already demonstrated its ability to make up for the absence of stars on the wings.

If you wonder, we are not giving Coman back. Bayern will surely use the buying option in his loan contract.

Vidal not finding form

What about Arturo Vidal? You sold him last summer in a move that surprised many. Bayern fans saw him as the box-to-box midfielder who would make Bayern’s central midfield tougher.

It has not turned out that way. Vidal plays regularly but his efficiency is rather low. He does not cover the pitch as he used to.

Why is that so?

Box-to-box midfielders struggle to make their mark under Pep Guardiola. His favouritism of Xabi Alonso, whose play is incompatible with the role, and little use of the central midfield changes explain the problem.

Notice that Luiz Gustavo left quickly after Pep’s arrival. Bastian Schweinsteiger never found his legs and he left for Manchester United. Javí Martinez rarely plays in the position, held back in central defence. Even the professor’s pet, Thiago Alcântara, has had a difficult season so far.

How can Juve beat Bayern?

With all of the above in mind, you should know that directness and verticality have been erased from the playbook. There is little chance that Bayern will attack with the energy of old. It will most probably come up with the usual insanely complex passing game with a high line of defence.

Even lowly opposition such as Eintracht Frankfurt has managed to frustrate the Bavarian attack by parking the bus and defending energetically. With resolve, pressing and good positioning, opponents can look for the decisive counterattack that can break Bayern’s back.

If Juventus wants to go “back and forth” by taking the game to Bayern, though, it will pay a high price. Costa, Robben, Müller and Lewandowski are deadly on the rare counter opportunities they get.

You now have clear view of today’s FC Bayern. Enjoy the tie!

Mandzukic back in Juve squad

http://www.football-italia.net/80143/mandzukic-back-juve-squad?

Feb 20, 2016

Mario Mandzukic is back in training with the Juventus squad ahead of their Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

The first leg of this Round of 16 tie will be held at the Juventus Stadium on Tuesday.

Mandzukic resumed training with the rest of the team today and Coach Max Allegri said the striker is likely to be available in Europe.

Sami Khedira was rested for last night’s 0-0 draw with Bologna, which interrupted their run of 15 consecutive Serie A victories.

Giorgio Chiellini also hopes to recover in time from a calf strain, but Alex Sandro, Kwadwo Asamoah and Martin Caceres are out of action.

Bayern survive early scare

http://www.football-italia.net/80153/bayern-survive-early-scare?

Feb 20, 2016

Bayern Munich were trailing at half-time, but fought back to beat Darmstadt 3-1 in their build-up to the Juventus game.

The giants meet in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday evening in Turin.

Juve played their Serie A game last night, drawing 0-0 at Bologna to end a run of 15 consecutive victories.

The Germans also initially struggled and were 1-0 down at the break on home turf when Serdar Tasci made an error on his debut, allowing Sandro Wagner’s header to open the scoring.

It was the first time since September 22 that Bayern had gone into the half-time interval in a trailing situation.

This can be a positive pointer for Max Allegri to build on, specifically the problems Bayern have in defending aerial situations.

Pep Guardiola’s men fought back with Thomas Muller’s brace, including a spectacular overhead kick, and late Robert Lewandowski effort.

Jerome Boateng, Javi Martinez and Holger Badstuber are out injured, but today Franck Ribery made his return after a muscular problem in December.

Ribery has only made two Bundesliga appearances all season due to ankle and muscular injuries, plus one 45-minute Champions League run-out against Dinamo Zagreb.

Bayern Munich:

Neuer; Rafinha, Kimmich, Tasci (Bernat 53), Alaba; Vidal; Coman (Ribery 53), Robben (Alonso 81), Müller, Costa; Lewandowski
