Capello reveals what’s missing in the current Juventus team

Tudor Juve, oggi nuovo vertice con Comolli. Le richieste

Juventus have begun the season in excellent form as the men in black and white aim to reclaim the league title. Under the guidance of Igor Tudor, the team have been performing above expectations and have established themselves as serious challengers for the crown. Supporters and pundits alike recognise the potential of this squad, although some areas still require improvement. ............

Despite the encouraging start, former manager Fabio Capello has highlighted concerns that could hinder the team’s progress. He said:

“An extra midfielder. And then the Bianconeri thrive on flashes and bursts of energy: they lack consistency. Tudor obviously needs to find his feet, but the new signings shouldn’t be dismissed. They just need to be given some time to settle in and understand Italy.”

His comments underline both the strengths and weaknesses of the current side. While Juventus are capable of moments of brilliance and decisive play, there is an evident lack of sustained rhythm across matches. Capello’s suggestion that an additional midfielder would enhance the squad also points to a structural gap that, if addressed, could make the team more balanced. ............

The season has already confounded those who doubted Juventus before the first ball was kicked. The Bianconeri have reminded the football world of their pedigree, demonstrating once again that they remain one of the leading clubs on the global stage. Their early performances have sparked optimism, yet as with any campaign, challenges remain.

The recent display against Verona revealed signs of fatigue, an indication that consistency will be vital if Juventus are to sustain their push for silverware. Nevertheless, the team’s resilience suggests that they will respond positively in forthcoming fixtures. ............

Preview: Juventus vs Atalanta BC - prediction, team news, lineups

Juventus vs Atalanta Prediction & Betting Tips 27.09.2025 | Serie A | 22Bet Predictions

Both unbeaten in Serie A, Juventus and Atalanta BC will vie for victory on Saturday evening, as they go toe-to-toe at Allianz Stadium. ............

Match preview

While there have been bumps in the road for Juventus this term, Igor Tudor's start to life as permanent head coach has gone relatively well so far, with 10 points on the board in Serie A.

Still undefeated in all competitions, Juve were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Hellas Verona last weekend, in a rather more prosaic contest than their previous two matches.

Following a spectacular 4-3 win over Inter Milan in the Derby d'Italia and an incredible eight-goal Champions League draw with Borussia Dortmund, Tudor's side were ultimately left frustrated by his former club.

Francisco Conceicao's opening goal was cancelled out by a controversial penalty from Verona striker Gift Orban - who could easily have been sent off earlier on - as Juventus left the Bentegodi with just one point.

Now returning to home turf, where the Bianconeri have posted six consecutive league wins dating back to last season, they will face a likely rival for European qualification.

Though Juve have won 10 of their last 11 Serie A matches as hosts, their sole setback during that time was a 4-0 humbling by Atalanta in March, which spelled the end for former coach Thiago Motta. ............

Team News

After being rested against Verona due to a minor injury issue, Juve's defensive rock Bremer should return to their back three on Saturday, meaning Pierre Kalulu could shift to wing-back.

Recently returned from a layoff, last week's goalscorer Francisco Conceicao has been training individually but is still expected to play, so only Fabio Miretti and Arkadiusz Milik will miss out.

Meanwhile, Jonathan David must vie with Lois Openda and Dusan Vlahovic for one place up front. The latter has excelled as a substitute this season, recording five goal involvements from three cameo appearances, but David is more often favoured from the start. ............

Juventus possible starting lineup:

Di Gregorio; Gatti, Bremer, Kelly; Kalulu, Thuram, Locatelli, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; David

Atalanta BC possible starting lineup:

Carnesecchi; Kossounou, Djimsiti, Ahanor; Bellanova, De Roon, Musah, Zappacosta; Pasalic; De Ketelaere, Krstovic

We say: Juventus 2-1 Atalanta BC

Both teams have averaged at least two goals per game so far - and neither has quite managed to solve their issues at the back - so entertainment should be on the cards.

However, Atalanta's absence list could cost them any chance of taking more points home from Turin - particularly as Juventus have several threats up front.

Juventus coach Igor Tudor confirms Francisco Conceiçao is not fully fit ahead of tomorrow’s game with Atalanta and feels his compatriot Ivan Juric is ‘underrated.’ ............

“We had two days of rest to recharge. Now we have three matches in a row before the international break and we’ve worked well,” Tudor said at a pre-match press conference.

“I’m not worried, I’m confident, and I believe the team is in good shape. Playing one match per week or three is a different kind of football; it needs to be repeated, and so a coach must be even better at making choices.

“It’s difficult because sometimes you don’t want to give up on certain players. But we paid for this, and we must make as few mistakes as possible. Certain players can play 50 games without problems; it depends on their characteristics.” ............

“Conceiçao had a few small issues; he played those 70 minutes with little training and picked up some knocks. We’ll see how he feels,” Tudor said. ............

“We do everything a coach can do. I have three strong forwards, and we choose based on the matches. We need to get to know the new ones. There will be space for everyone, the season is long. I’m happy to have three strong players.” ............

“Juric is not my best friend; he’s a friend of mine. He has values and a particular way of coaching,” said the Juventus boss.

“He’s fantastic and a bit underrated throughout his career. He’s always done extraordinary things that have been underrated. In the last year, he had two unusual situations. Now he’s coaching a team in the Champions League, and so he’s been recognised. Tomorrow, two strong teams with strengths and weaknesses meet.” ............

Lastly, Tudor didn’t reply to referee designator Gianluca Rocchi, who had said the Juventus coach’s protests after the 1-1 draw against Verona were “excessive.”

“I won’t say anything; we move on,” Tudor concluded.

Ivan Juric knows Juventus has too much quality for his Atalanta team

52d3a8f7a61ca1666be3b9a15392fe74

Ivan Juric is aiming to secure maximum points when he leads Atalanta against Juventus in Serie A this weekend. The Bianconeri have been one of the league’s top-performing teams this season, having only dropped points in a single match so far. They are closely trailing Napoli at the top of the table, making this fixture a crucial encounter for their championship aspirations.

Juric has enjoyed a promising start to his tenure at Atalanta and is keen to build on that momentum. ............

Speaking ahead of the match, Juric shared his thoughts:

“I expect to face a match tomorrow where they have a lot of options. Playing Juventus will be tough, as we saw in the summer friendly (Bortolotti Trophy): we want to try to do our best. The points dropped against Pisa really hurt because we could have won. Then the team unlocked themselves in attack, and we want to continue like this. Juventus? They have Conceicao, Zhegrova, Yildiz, and also three very good strikers. They have speed, technique, and a wealth of options: we’ll need to be ready both offensively and defensively.”

Juric’s comments highlight both his respect for Juventus’ quality and his determination to prepare his team strategically. He is aware of the technical ability, speed, and depth that the opposition possesses, emphasising the need for readiness in all phases of the game. ............

Securing points against a side of Juventus’ calibre would be a major statement for Atalanta and could significantly influence the team’s confidence moving forward. The manager is focused on ensuring that his players are fully prepared to face the array of attacking options available to their opponents while maintaining balance and discipline throughout the match. ............

Serie A Preview: Juventus vs Atalanta – Team News, Line-ups & Prediction

Juventus_Atalanta_Preview.jpg

Juventus’ 100% league start came to an end last weekend. Despite taking an early lead through Francisco Conceicao, Igor Tudor’s side slumped to a 1-1 draw at Hellas Verona.

However, three wins from the opening four rounds keep Juventus firmly in contention for their first Scudetto since the 2019/20 season. A swift return to winning ways would be the ultimate confidence booster, especially considering they face perennial top-four contenders Atalanta in a blockbuster contest. ............

Match Preview

Juventus

Allianz Stadium has been a fortress this season. After a comfortable 2-0 victory over Parma, Juventus pulled off a stunning late comeback to beat Inter Milan 4-3 in a breathless Derby d’Italia in their last home league match. Furthermore, the Turin giants netted twice in second-half stoppage time to hold Borussia Dortmund to a 4-4 draw.

Despite enjoying their best start to the Serie A season since 2018/19, defensive woes threaten to hamper the Bianconeri’s hopes of returning to the domestic throne. Indeed, they’ve conceded across their last three games in all competitions, including seven in their two most recent home matches.

Nonetheless, Juventus will take the field in high spirits, buoyed by an ongoing six-game winning home streak in Serie A. Another triumph against Atalanta would see them go seven in a row for the first time since March 2021. Moreover, they scored at least two goals in each of those six wins.

Atalanta

 ............

Team News

After being rested against Verona, Gleison Bremer is expected to return to Juventus’ starting XI at the expense of Pierre Kalulu. Meanwhile, the Frenchman may return to the wing, with Joao Mario likely to make way. Long-term absentee Arkadiusz Milik remains on the sidelines, alongside Fabio Miretti.

As for Atalanta, Nicola Zalewski, Sead Kolasic, Giorgio Scalvini, and Mitchell Bakker are unavailable for selection due to injuries. Far more ominous is the absence of star striker Gianluca Scamacca and midfield cornerstone Ederson. With Scamacca out, Nikola Krstovic will probably lead the line despite Ademola Lookman’s return to the squad.

Juventus vs Atalanta Potential Starting Line-ups

Juventus (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Gatti, Bremer, Kelly; Kalulu, Thuram, Locatelli, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; David.

Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Carnesecchi; Kossounou, Djimsiti, Ahanor; Bellanova, De Roon, Musah, Zappacosta; Pasalic; De Ketelaere, Krstovic.

Juventus vs Atalanta Prediction

It would take a brave man to write Atalanta off before the kick-off. However, a sizeable injury list threatens to hamper La Dea’s chances of upsetting Turin again. Juventus have been superb at home, and we believe they’re well-positioned to take advantage of Atalanta’s injury crisis.

Indeed, this feels like a prime opportunity for Juventus to beat this opposition at the Allianz Stadium for the first time since March 2018.

Prediction: Juventus to Win

Juventus host Atalanta at the Allianz Stadium in Turin on Saturday evening, as the Bianconeri look to end a dismal streak of home results against La Dea.

The last time the Bianconeri beat Atalanta in Turin came in March 2018, when the Old Lady emerged 2-0 victors over their opposition. ............

Since then, Juventus have not won in any of their last seven home games against Atalanta.

In March of this year, the Bianconeri suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at home to Atalanta while in the 2023-24 campaign, the fixture ended in a 2-2 draw. ............

The 2022-23 season saw an absolute classic of a match, with the Bianconeri coming back from behind twice to snatch a point in a 3-3 draw. ............

Juventus vs Atalanta: Preview and Prediction

Juventus - Atalanta, 09/27/2025: pronóstico, cuotas y cuándo se juega | BetMines

Juventus have enjoyed a solid start to the new season ahead of the big game against Atalanta, and Igor Tudor’s appointment as the permanent manager is paying dividends. Having started the new campaign in full swing, the Bianconeri have collected 19 points out of a possible 12 in Serie A so far, having dropped their first set last weekend.

Before last weekend, Tudor’s men had a few challenging outings, including a top-notch 4-3 win over title rivals Inter Milan. However, when they went away to Hellas Verona, it turned out to be tougher than anticipated as Francisco Conceicao’s opener was cancelled out by Gift Orban’s penalty amid controversial circumstances.

Juventus’s performance on the road was reminiscent of some of the displays under former boss Thiago Motta, who was incidentally sacked from his role after a 4-0 humbling at the hands of next opponents Atalanta. Juventus are expected to rival the Bergamo giants in their primary quest for UEFA Champions League finish, but the Bianconeri are eyeing a spot as title challengers, and will aim for a win on Saturday. ............

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

Igor Tudor will likely have key defender Gleison Bremer back in contention after the Brazilian centre-backs rested against Hellas Verona with a minor knee injury. So, Pierre Kalulu is likely to be shifted to a wing-back role. Fabio Miretti and Arkadiusz Milik are the ones missing out on action at the current moment.

Tudor will unlikely make big changes to his preferred starting lineup, while using his preferred midfield setup of Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram. Kalulu and Andrea Cambiaso will feature in the wing-back roles, while last weekend’s goalscorer Francisco Conceicao will also play despite his recent layoff.

The in-demand prospect Kenan Yildiz will feature in the final third activities, while there is intense competition for places for the No.9 role, with Jonathan David, Lois Openda and Dusan Vlahovic all vying for a single spot. David will lead the line for Juventus against Atalanta on Saturday.

Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Gatti, Bremer, Kelly; Kalulu, Thuram, Locatelli, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; David

qqfJbKtWOi5h7m6GGKFa_Csh.png

Atalanta

 ............

Probable Lineup (3-4-1-2): Carnesecchi; Kossounou, Djimsiti, Ahanor; Bellanova, De Roon, Musah, Zappacosta; Pasalic; De Ketelaere, Krstovic

0cEoahQnTUFMt3D3gOJa_CWI.png

Key Stats

  • Juventus are undefeated in their last nine matches in Serie A.
  • Juventus have scored at least two goals in their last six home games
  • Atalanta are unbeaten in their last seven visits to Juventus.
  • Atalanta have lost one of their last 11 games against Juventus.

Player to Watch

Jonathan David

The Canadian striker had the best possible start to life as Juventus’s new striker following his move from LOSC Lille on a free transfer. David scored in the opening day victory over Parma, but he has since gone a bit quiet, with only one assist to show for his displays, which came against Inter Milan.

The competition for places for the starting striker is probably the most intense at Juventus compared to any team in the world. Lois Openda and Dusan Vlahovic are also knocking on the door with impressive performances this season, and should David start against Atalanta on Saturday, he needs to put in a formidable display to stake his place for longer.

Prediction

Juventus 2-1 Atalanta

Atalanta are in a good run of form, albeit still being inconsistent, where they have made it difficult to properly judge them under Ivan Juric. One day, they are timid, while taking the handbrake off on another occasion. While La Dea come to Juventus with a top record against their opposition, there are still big question marks about whether Juric can get them a result here.

Meanwhile, Juventus have enjoyed a very good start to their season, and that will be crucial in their game against Atalanta. They are in a superior vein of form compared to their visitors, and that might be key for Igor Tudor to get a result on Saturday. The Bianconeri are expected to take three points, possibly not convincingly, but they have the players to get the job done.

Igor Tudor could hand impressive teenager a start in Juventus next game

Vasilije Adzic

Vasilije Adzic has been developing steadily at Juventus and has made a notable impression when given opportunities on the pitch. Although he has yet to start a game this season, the minutes he has played have demonstrated his quality and potential, earning the attention of manager Igor Tudor. With a demanding week ahead, featuring three fixtures in seven days, Juventus are considering giving some of their key players rest, opening the door for Adzic to start against Atalanta this weekend. ............

Tudor is contemplating handing Adzic a starting role in attacking midfield for the upcoming clash with La Dea, while Francisco Conceicao may be rested. The decision reflects the club’s need to manage player workloads as the season intensifies, as well as the manager’s confidence in Adzic’s ability to perform at a high level. This could provide a crucial opportunity for the young attacker, who has been waiting patiently for his chance to start a game for the men in black and white.

Adzic appears mentally prepared to seize the opportunity should it arise. His brief appearances this season have been impressive. Tudor’s consideration of starting Adzic indicates that the manager values the player’s potential to contribute meaningfully when given game time, particularly in a squad rotation scenario. ............

As Juventus navigate a congested schedule, balancing the workload of their key players while maintaining competitive performance is essential. Allowing Adzic to start could not only provide rest for established starters but also help integrate him further into the first-team setup. The club must evaluate whether he is the best option for the role, taking into account both his development and the team’s tactical requirements. ............

Ten-man Atalanta survives late Juventus onslaught to get a draw in Turin

Cabal-celebrating-against-Atalanta.jpg

Ten-man Atalanta held Juventus to a 1-1 draw in Turin this evening, surviving a wave of late pressure from the home side. Both clubs came into the match unbeaten, and the intensity from the opening whistle reflected their determination to preserve that record. ............

The deadlock was broken in added time at the end of the opening period, with Atalanta striking a blow just before the interval. While Juventus may have felt unfortunate to trail after an evenly balanced half, matches at this level often hinge on small details and the ability of managers to reset their teams through tactical adjustments.

The restart saw Atalanta continue to pose a threat on the counter, even as Juventus pushed forward in search of an equaliser. The Bianconeri dominated possession and territory, yet clear openings proved elusive against a disciplined defensive structure put in place by Ivan Juric. ............

The turning point came midway through the second half when Juan Cabal, introduced from the bench, found the net just two minutes after his arrival. His goal provided Juventus with the lifeline they were chasing, sparking belief in the home crowd and adding further urgency to their attacks.

Atalanta’s task became even more difficult shortly afterwards when they were reduced to ten men. From that point, it was relentless Juventus pressure, wave after wave of attacks driven by their substitutes. Edon Zhegrova, in particular, played a central role in creating opportunities, yet the breakthrough never arrived. ............

A goal from Juan Cabal helped Juventus avoid defeat against Atalanta, who seem to have found the new Ademola Lookman in Kamaldeen Sulemana.

Juventus vs. Atalanta – player ratings

Juventus: Di Gregorio 6; Gatti 5 (64′ Joao Mario 6), Bremer 5 (75′ Cabal 6.5), Kelly 6.5; Kalulu 5.5, Koopmeiners 5.5, Thuram 5.5 (57′ McKennie 5.5), Cambiaso 6; Adzic 4.5 (57′ Vlahovic 5), Yildiz 5; Openda 5 (63′ Zhegrova 6). Coach: Tudor 5.5.

Best Juventus player: Cabal 6.5 – Introduced from the bench to replace the injured Bremer, the Colombia international scored his first goal since returning from a cruciate ligament injury. Kelly’s performance should also be highlighted, the best Juventus centre-back today.

Lowest Juventus rating: Adzic 4.5 – Many poor passes and lost possession in the build-up to Atalanta’s opening goal.

Juventus coach: Tudor 5.5 – The paradox is that he has plenty of options in attack, but Juventus struggle to create big chances to score. His men moved the ball too slowly and only tried to hurt opponents through sterile crosses that the Atalanta defence managed easily.

Atalanta: Carnesecchi 6.5; Kossounou 5, Djimsiti 7, Ahanor 6; Bellanova 6, De Roon 5, Pasalic 6, Zappacosta 6.5; Samardzic 6 (76′ Musah 6), Sulemana 7 (61′ De Ketelaere 5.5); Krstovic 6 (81′ Brescianini N/A). Coach: Juric 6. ............

Atalanta coach: Juric 6 – It may not be the same Atalanta as the Gasperini era, but they haven’t lost their soul. ............

Igor Tudor sees ‘the glass half full’ after Juventus came back for a 1-1 draw with Atalanta, insisting it was ‘one of the best performances since I’ve been here.’

The Bianconeri pulled a few surprises in the starting XI, picking Vasilije Adzic for his first Serie A start with Kenan Yildiz and Lois Openda, but despite having several scoring opportunities, they failed to make the breakthrough in the first half. ............

The game turned late on when Juan Cabal poked in from six yards after an Odilon Kossounou fresh-air clearance, then Marten de Roon saw red moments later, but Juve were unable to turn it around completely.

“I see the glass half full, because we put in a great performance, one of the best since I’ve been here,” Tudor said.

“It was a tough match between two teams who play in the Champions League, so a draw is fair.” ............

The Old Lady also lost Gleison Bremer to a muscular injury, as he asked to come off.

“He was playing against a very strong striker today and used up a lot of energy, so we’ll see. I don’t think it’s serious, but the timing was a problem, as I couldn’t introduce Jonathan David in the final minutes,” explained Tudor.

“Khephren Thuram felt a twinge in his calf, but that’s nothing to worry about either.” ............

“There are three centre-forwards and a group of players who can support the striker. I just have to choose them from game to game, making them all play in the system that we set up. There’s also Francisco Conceicao, who will be fit and ready for the Champions League next week.” ............

“Adzic deserved to start today, he was a bit sluggish and we paid for that, but this is part of the maturation process. He is a player we really believe in.”

Marocchi explains what stopped Juventus from beating Atalanta

Kenan Yildiz in action against Atalanta

Atalanta secured a valuable draw against Juventus in Turin this evening despite being reduced to ten men. The visitors began brightly, showing composure and organisation, and were rewarded when they took the lead shortly before half-time. Juventus were forced to chase the game and eventually found an equaliser in the second half, though their efforts to complete a comeback ultimately fell short. ............

Igor Tudor would have anticipated more cutting-edge from his team, given the attacking talent at his disposal, but Atalanta’s organisation under Ivan Juric proved decisive. Every attempt to prise open their back line was met with resistance, ensuring Juventus were denied a winning strike.

Giancarlo Marocchi reflected on the encounter: “When you win or draw after a comeback, it’s much more of a celebration than usual. Then, an orderly Atalanta blocked Juventus, who had started very well, creating and not creating. However, Atalanta’s order alone was enough to keep the game deadlocked. Then, Atalanta actually took the lead, and with three attackers, a defender who shouldn’t have come on scored at the end. This happens too, and in the end, Juventus always come from behind to win. Atalanta can only be satisfied with the path they’ve taken with Juric.” ............

Dusan-Vlahovic-Atalanta.jpg

While Juventus fought hard and dominated the latter stages, they could not convert their pressure into three points. Their failure to break down Atalanta’s ten men underlined the need for greater sharpness in attack, particularly when faced with disciplined opponents.

The draw was far from the outcome the Bianconeri wanted, especially at home, yet it offered important lessons. ............

Juventus player ratings vs Atalanta: Cabal the most unlikely saviour

Juan Cabal scoring against Atalanta

Juventus registered their second Serie A draw in a row, as they shared the spoils with Atalanta at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

The Bianconeri were the better side in the first half, but couldn’t find the breakthrough. On the contrary, La Dea took advantage of Vasilije Adzic’s mistake to open the scoring through Kamaldeen Sulemana.

Nevertheless, Juan Cabal salvaged a point for the home side on his return from injury. ............

Michele Di Gregorio – 6

 ............

Federico Gatti – 6

 ............

Gleison Bremer – 6

The Brazilian was resolute for as long as he lasted, but he almost gifted Nikola Krstovic a goal after misjudging an air ball.

Lloyd Kelly – 6.5

The Englishman continues to win over his initial detractors, as he produced another convincing showing at the back.

Pierre Kalulu – 6

The former Milan defender almost scored in the second minute but was denied by the post. Switched from wing-back to centre-back in the second half.

Teun Koopmeiners – 5.5

The Dutchman ran more than anyone else, but still lacked the required technical touch and creativity.

Khephren Thuram – 5.5

The French midfielder had a promising start, but he doesn’t seem to be at his best physically. Found difficulties matching Mario Pasalic for pace, which might have prompted his exit early in the second half.

Andrea Cambiaso – 7

An inspiring display from the Italy international who won his duel against Raoul Bellanova on the wing, while helping the midfielders in the buildup as he operated in a free role.

Vasilije Adzic – 4.5

Aside from a couple of dangerous attempts on target, the teenager had a full debut to forget. Gave away possession cheaply on at least five occasions, and this eventually proved costly, allowing Atalanta to break the deadlock against the run of play.

Kenan Yildiz – 6

 ............

Loic Openda – 5

The Belgian has once again failed to justify his selection ahead of Vlahovic and Jonathan David. He has yet to present himself as a threat in front of goal.

Substitutues

Dusan Vlahovic – 5.5

 ............

Weston McKennie – 6

The American brought some much-needed energy in midfield and caused De Roon’s dismissal, but should have done better when he had the chance to win it for Juventus.

Edon Zhegrova – 6.5

A vibrant cameo from the speed demon who gave Davide Zappacosta nightmares.

Joao Mario – 6

The Portuguese’s crosses weren’t too accurate, but one of them ended up being the assist for Cabal’s equaliser thanks to a deflection

Juan Cabal – 7

A dream return for the Colombian who opened his account for Juventus in his first appearance after 10 months on the sidelines.

Juventus 1 - Atalanta 1: Initial reaction and random observations

Juventus FC v Atalanta BC - Serie A

Juventus, once again, have left a lot to be desired as they ventured out on a second-half comeback bid.

We’ve seen this type of situation in each of the last three times they’ve taken to the field at the Allianz Stadium. And just like the previous two times against Inter Milan in the Derby d’Italia and then Borussia Dortmund to open the Champions League league phase, Juventus were hounding the opposing goal in hopes of taking a late lead as the anxiety only went higher and higher amongst the 40,000-plus in the stands. ............

If not for one Juan Cabal —easily one of the least likely players in one of Juve’s blue away strip that they actually wore at home to score a goal — finding the back of the net for the first time since he was still playing in Colombia 3 1/2 years ago, Juventus would have likely suffered their first loss of the 2025-26 season. That is the good part to come out of Saturday night — they didn’t lose. But other than that, this was a night in which a lot of the same problems we’ve seen from Juventus over the last couple of years and the last couple of managers come to the fore. This was a 1-1 draw where Juve dominated possession but ultimately didn’t do a whole hell of a lot with it in a 1-1 draw against Atalanta, the third straight draw within a two-week span from Igor Tudor’s squad that definitely had some worrying signs.

You want individual errors leading to the opposing team scoring a goal after doing virtually nothing in the attacking third? You got that from Vasilije Adžić and his turnover that led to Atalanta taking a 1-0 lead right before the half. ............

And, of course, there was the scoring chance that wasn’t scored that will loom so incredibly large in a lot of minds over the coming hours, with Weston McKennie unable to put away a glorious chance in the 88th minute and instead seeing his shot go right at Marco Carnesecchi.

It definitely felt like one of those games where Juventus were just fighting an uphill battle even when they weren’t behind on the scoreboard. Atalanta were playing as a classic Ivan Juric side wants to play — they will let you have the ball even they mix it up with their press and then just try and counter you to death. That, plus the Adžić mistake and the subsequent juking of Federico Gatti, is why they were up 1-0 going into the half. Juventus had virtually every advantage statistically outside of the most important one — on the scoreboard. ............

Is one point better than none a positive? Sure.

Is the fact that a banged up Atalanta side with some of their best players either out injured and back in Bergamo or sitting on the bench coming away from this one with a point a negative for Juventus? Yeah, definitely.

This was the same Atalanta — albeit with a new manager, of course — that throttled Juventus back in early March and put one of the final nails in Thiago Motta’s coffin in Turin. They certainly weren’t at that level on Saturday night, and it really did show no matter how well Juric might have set things up in this one.

We can play the “it’s early” card all we want, but these problems that Juventus have shown this season aren’t new. They showed more signs of fatigue — can we give Khephren Thuram a break, please? — even though their last game was seven days ago. These are reasons for worry no matter how early in the season it may still be. ............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Pre-game thought No. 1: Well, that certainly is an interesting starting lineup from Mister Tudor.
  • Pre-game thought No. 2: Quite the interesting time for Adžić to make his first career start at Juventus. ............
  • Then Pierre Kalulu goes and hammers a header off the post. Man, knowing how this one turned out, how different things would have been if that ball had been directed about a foot more to the left and snuck inside the post.
  • Juventus had 69% possession through the first 20 minutes. I think that could be nice.
  • A sign of just how Atalanta approached the opening stages of this one: Juventus had a 174-53 advantage in terms of completed passes through the first 25 minutes. They had a 12-2 advantage when it came to entries into the final third and 12-1 edge with touches in the opposition’s box over that same time period. They had no goals to show for it. ............
  • There is a collective rise of anticipation at the Allianz whenever Kenan Yildiz has the ball at his feet now. Like, it was there last season, but it’s just grown seemingly 10 fold now. He is the star of the show, and everybody is just waiting for him to do his next really wonderful piece of magic with his right or left foot.
  • Yildiz and Edon Zhegrova being on the field together has the potential to be very fun.
  • Juventus didn’t have a single shot during the first 25 minutes of the second half. That’s not good. ............
  • I, for one, am happy for Juan Cabal and him getting his first goal since 2000-freaking-22. He was playing for Atlético Nacional back then! That’s a lot time! He often is the “other player” when thinking about the major knee injuries Juventus dealt with last season — which is expected considering just how good and important Gleison Bremer is. But Cabal has brought a positive impact in his handful of appearances off the bench so far. That’s all you can ask from him as he continues to slowly work his way back into the fold.
  • Speaking of dudes who had ACL injuries last season, it seems like Bremer asked to be subbed out more due to fatigue more than anything. Will be very interesting to see how Tudor handles him knowing that Juventus have all of a few days in between now and their trip to Spain to face Villarreal. ............
  • My guy Khephren is tired. Like really tired.
  • Koopmeiners wasn’t necessarily bad against his former club, but we’re still waiting for that Atalanta version of him to show up and I really have no idea what it will take at his point. The bar is very, very low for him right now to clear the “at least he wasn’t terrible” when he plays — and that’s unfortunate because there is still a good player somewhere in there.
  • I know the bar is still relatively low for Lloyd Kelly, but he’s having a good season! Wasn’t expecting that. ............
  • Juventus finished with 24 shots. They scored one goal.
  • Starting to think Carnesecchi really is the bane of my existence. That man is so good. Atalanta are going to make so much money whenever they sell him.
  • Juve’s one point off the Serie A lead. Time for Max to help out a little bit on Sunday. (But not next Sunday!)

Tudor reveals why he kept David on the bench, highlights difference between Juventus strikers

Jonathan David and Lloyd Kelly

Juventus manager Igor Tudor explains why Jonathan David remained an unused substitute against Atalanta on Saturday.

The two sides shared the spoils in an entertaining draw at the Allianz Stadium. The Orobici broke the deadlock against the run of play towards the end of the first half through Kamaldeen Sulemana. Nevertheless, Juan Cabal emerged as the most unlikely saviour for the Old Lady, bagging the equaliser just minutes following his return from a 10-month injury layoff. ............

The Croatian manager picked Lois Openda to start as the lone striker, supported by Kenan Yildiz and Vasilije Adzic.

However, the Belgian was largely ineffective, so the manager resorted to Dusan Vlahovic, who didn’t fare much better. ............

Tudor reassured that he intended to play the former Lille striker David, but he had to bring in Cabal instead, as Gleison Bremer asked to be substituted after feeling a muscle strain.

“I’m very happy for Cabal,” said the Juventus manager in his post-match press conference.

“But it’s a shame we couldn’t make the most of the last substitution by bringing in David.” ............

“Openda, Vlahovic and David can’t play as attacking midfielders. But every now and then, they adapt. We play 3-4-3 and I have to be good at utilising our players.

“We have three players who prefer to play as a central striker. Openda wants his space, whereas David wants to stay close to the goal, and Vlahovic is the same. Nevertheless, they have to adapt when they play deeper.”

Juventus have two major doubts surrounding the availability of Gleison Bremer and Khephren Thuram for Wednesday’s Champions League match away against Villarreal following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Atalanta in Serie A. ............

During Saturday’s action, both Bremer and Thuram requested to be replaced with physical concerns, however. Both players are expected to report for medical examinations on Monday. ............

As things stand, however, Bremer is a major doubt for Villarreal in the Champions League. Even though the full extent of his problem is not yet known, Juventus do not feel prepared to risk the Brazilian given that he has only recently returned from an injury that kept him out of action for almost a full year.

Thuram will also have to wait to learn the full extent of the calf issue that forced him out of Saturday’s draw with Atalanta. ............

“He chose the wrong lineup” – Collovati ‘perplexed’ by Tudor’s post-match comments

Igor Tudor giving instructions to Juventus players

Former Italy defender Fulvio Collovati was bewildered by Juventus manager Igor Tudor, who was satisfied with his team’s display against Atalanta. ............

In his post-match press conference, Tudor was highly praiseful of his men, arguing that the team produced their best first half since he took over from Thiago Motta back in March.

However, Collovati struggled to wrap his head around the manager’s comments. The former Milan and Inter centre-back wasn’t entirely impressed with Juve’s display, or with the manager’s choices.

“I agreed with Tudor’s comments when he vented (against the referee’s controversial decision) last week,” said the 1982 World Cup winner during his appearance on Il sabato al 90.

“However, I absolutely disagree—in fact, I’m quite perplexed—by these statements I read after watching today’s match. ............

“It seems to me that Tudor chose the wrong lineup; they were a rather surprising team, in the negative sense of the word.” ............

“It will be wonderful” – Allegri looking forward to Juventus vs Milan showdown

Allegri e Milan furiosi: a gennaio indosserà la maglia della Juve

Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri will be happy to make his return to the Allianz Stadium next weekend to take on his former employers, Juventus.

The 58-year-old is enjoying a thrilling start to his second stint with the Rossoneri. Despite shockingly losing the opening fixture of the season against Cremonese at home, Milan are now at the top of the Serie A table after winning their last four. ............

“We have to keep working hard; we’ve only made a small step forward,” said the Livorno native in his post-match press conference.

“There will be more difficult games like this one, but if we play with this spirit, it will be easier to win. Leao’s still lagging behind in terms of fitness, but Nkunku is improving. We have the potential to do well.” ............

Next weekend, Milan will head to Turin to battle it out with Juventus in what will be a special contest for Allegri who spent eight years overall with the Bianconeri.

“Am I thinking about it? No, but it’ll be a great game, wonderful. I’ve played a few here and a few there. It will be a fun one too.”

Allegri enjoyed a largely successful first tenure at Juventus between 2014 and 2019, winning five Scudetti titles, four Coppa Italia trophies and reaching the final of the Champions League twice. ............

Two Juventus midfielders vying to replace Thuram against Villarreal

Juventus midfielder Khephren Thuram

Juventus boss Igor Tudor has a selection dilemma in the middle of the park, as Khephren Thuram is expected to be rested.

The French star has now cemented himself as one of the most influential players in the team. Even club icon Alessandro Del Piero identified him and Kenan Yildiz as the two ‘main’ players in the squad. ............

On Saturday, Thuram picked up a slight knock during the first half of the Serie A clash against Atalanta, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The midfielder initially gritted his teeth, but he seemed to be struggling to cope with the opposition, so the manager eventually replaced him with Weston McKennie early in the second half. ............

While the latest updates reassure that Thuram hasn’t suffered an injury, it remains to be seen if he’ll be able to pull off a swift recovery and get on the plane to Spain.

Tudor will most likely drop Thuram from the lineup, even if the latter is available. The manager must also take into account next weekend’s top Serie A showdown against Milan. ............

Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli will retain his starting spot against Villarreal, but the identity of his midfield partner remains uncertain.

As the source explains, Tudor will have to choose between Teun Koopmeiners and McKennie.

The Dutchman has been tested in several positions since Tudor’s arrival, but has yet to thrive in any. So it would be interesting to see how he’d cope in the double-pivot alongside Locatelli. ............

Latest updates on Conceicao, Thuram & Bremer ahead of Villarreal vs Juventus clash

Francisco-Conceicao-celebrating-v-Verona.jpg

Juventus manager Igor Tudor is hoping to recover three regular starters for Wednesday’s Champions League encounter against Villarreal.

The Bianconeri will resume their European campaign with a meeting against the Yellow Submarines on Spanish soil. ............

The 1-1 draw with La Dea saw Khephren Thuram and Gleison Bremer pick up knocks that prompted their exit in the second half. Moreover, Francisco Conceicao was nowhere to be seen, having suffered a muscle strain in previous days.

So will Tudor be able to rely on his key trio? ............

First of all, Conceicao is expected to resume training with his teammates on Monday, which should lead up to his return to the matchday squad. Hence, the Portuguese will almost certainly be on the plane to Spain. ............

As for Bremer, he felt some pain in the left knee, the one that was operated last year after tearing his ACL. Needless to say, this sparked some concern among the medical staff who continue to treat the Brazilian’s case with extra caution.

Nevertheless, all fears have been dispelled, and the 28-year-old has been given the green light to rejoin the squad.

Finally, Thuram’s calf problem remains a cause for concern, but the club is certain that the Frenchman has averted a serious injury. ............

Preview: Villarreal vs Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups

Villarreal vs Juventus Prediction and Betting Tips

Following a spectacular start to their 25th Champions League campaign, Juventus will seek maximum points on Wednesday, when they visit Villarreal at Estadio de la Ceramica.

While Juve stole one point from an eight-goal thriller on the opening matchday, their hosts succumbed to a single goal in London.

Match preview

 ............

Juventus finished 20th in last season's league phase, before losing to PSV Eindhoven in the knockout playoffs, so their main aim over the coming months is to sneak into the Champions League's top eight.

That would see them straight through to the last 16, but the Italian giants are already under pressure to produce results.

Just days after fighting back to beat Inter Milan in a classic Derby d'Italia, Juve kicked off their continental campaign with another saga that featured a truly incredible finale.

Having twice equalised in the second half, the Bianconeri shipped two more goals in the closing stages and seemed bound for defeat against Borussia Dortmund, but they somehow scored twice deep into stoppage time and salvaged a 4-4 home draw.

Substitute Dusan Vlahovic was the catalyst for such a thrilling comeback, but it was Lloyd Kelly who proved Juve's unlikely saviour with his last-gasp leveller.

Yet, in the cold light of day, they had only continued a subpar run of results in the Champions League, where Juventus have now won just six of their last 20 matches.

Since then, Igor Tudor's call for calm has been heeded, as his team have recorded relatively mundane 1-1 draws against Hellas Verona and Atalanta BC in Serie A.

Last time out, they dominated La Dea in Turin but needed a 78th-minute equaliser from Juan Cabal to share the spoils, leaving them fourth in Italy's top flight.

Team News

 ............

Juventus currently have a three-way battle for selection in attack, as Buchanan's international teammate Jonathan David vies with Vlahovic and Lois Openda.

Vlahovic was directly involved in three of Juve's goals against Dortmund, despite only coming on in the 60th minute; so with the other two failing to fire, Tudor may turn back to his Serbian striker.

Meanwhile, Fabio Miretti is still sidelined by a thigh injury, while key men Bremer (knee) and Khephren Thuram (calf) will be assessed closer to kickoff; Francisco Conceicao is now back in full training and could even start.

Villarreal possible starting lineup:

Junior; Mourino, Marin, Veiga, Cardona; Buchanan, Gueye, Comesana, Solomon; Pepe, Mikautadze

Juventus possible starting lineup:

Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly; Mario, Thuram, Locatelli, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; David

We say: Villarreal 2-1 Juventus

Still undefeated in all competitions, Tudor's Juventus often make up for their shortcomings with the capacity to fight back - but their run of fortune may be cut short.

Villarreal have been one of Europe's top-performing teams in recent months, and they will recover from losing to Spurs with a win on home turf.

David, Openda or Vlahovic? Who will lead the line for Juventus against Villarreal

Dai dubbi su Openda e David al nuovo ruolo di Vlahovic: l'attacco della Juventus è un rebus — Tribuna.com

Juventus head coach Igor Tudor will have to choose between Jonathan David, Lois Openda and Dusan Vlahovic for Wednesday’s Champions League contest against Villarreal. ............

Following Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Atalanta, Tudor revealed that all three players prefer to play as centre-forwards, so he’s unlikely to deploy two of them in the same starting lineup.

But while Openda got the nod on the weekend, the Belgian failed to inspire. Vlahovic entered the contest in the second half, but he didn’t fare much better. ............

On the contrary, David remained on the bench, as Tudor had to use his last substitution in defence, bringing in Juan Cabal for Gleison Bremer, who suffered a muscle strain.

Therefore, Tudor would make amends by fielding the Canadian striker as a starter against Villarreal. ............

This would be the 25-year-old’s first starting appearance since the thrilling 4-4 draw against Borussia Dortmund on the opening round of the Champions League.

As the Turin-based newspaper explains, David will get a new opportunity to prove his worth, while Openda will be dropped to the bench following a disappointing display. ............
