Bremer still not training with the group ahead of the Villarreal game

Report: Bremer, Khephren Thuram in doubt for Juventus' trip to Villarreal | Black & White & Read All Over

Gleison Bremer appears to have suffered a setback during Juventus’ recent match against Atalanta, creating uncertainty ahead of their crucial fixture against Villarreal in Spain. For Igor Tudor and his squad, the timing could hardly be worse, as Bremer has become an indispensable figure in the heart of defence since returning from his previous injury layoff. ............

Bremer is currently undergoing differentiated training away from the rest of the first-team squad in preparation for the upcoming match. This approach suggests that the club is monitoring his condition carefully, opting for caution rather than risk aggravating the issue. The report also states that Khephren Thuram joined him in training separately, with both players experiencing discomfort following the clash against Atalanta. ............

Juventus supporters are understandably anxious about the availability of Bremer and Thuram, particularly with Villarreal looming as a decisive test. While their inclusion would undoubtedly strengthen the team’s chances, the club must weigh the immediate benefits against the potential long-term consequences. Rushing either player back into action could risk aggravating their problems, leading to a longer absence that would severely disrupt the campaign.

The situation highlights the delicate balance between necessity and prudence in elite football. Juventus find themselves needing every advantage possible to secure a result in Spain, yet they also know that squad depth and player management are crucial in navigating the challenges of a long season. If Bremer and Thuram are declared unfit, Tudor will have to rely on his alternatives, trusting the resilience and tactical organisation of the wider squad to step up in their absence. ............

Can Juventus end their terrible away form in the Champions League?

Juventus in the Champions League

Juventus are preparing for a crucial Champions League encounter as they travel to Spain this week to take on Villarreal. The Bianconeri, long established as one of Europe’s most historic clubs, are under pressure to improve their recent record in continental competition. Despite their reputation and pedigree, the Champions League trophy has eluded them for three decades, a fact that continues to frustrate their supporters. Each season brings renewed optimism that they might finally lift the trophy once more, and this campaign is no different. ............

Heading into the fixture, Juventus carry with them a concerning statistic. The team has managed only one victory in their last five away games in the Champions League. That solitary success came against RB Leipzig in Germany last season, while their other four outings produced three draws and one defeat, the latter coming against PSV. This inconsistency has raised questions about their ability to deliver strong performances on foreign soil, a factor that could prove decisive in such a competitive tournament. ............

Villarreal are expected to provide a stern test. Known for their disciplined structure and technical ability, the Spanish side are rarely easy opponents, particularly at home. For Juventus, the challenge will be to impose themselves early and demonstrate the confidence required to overcome their hosts. On their best day, the Bianconeri are more than capable of defeating strong opposition, but they must find a way to translate that potential into consistent performances on the European stage. ............

De Canio reveals where Juventus biggest problem spot is

Koopmeiners

Juventus have assembled a squad filled with top-class talent in every department, investing heavily over the last two transfer windows to strengthen its options. With such significant financial backing, expectations in Turin are understandably high. The club demands consistent performances and results that reflect the resources committed to building a competitive side. ............

Former coach Gigi De Canio has voiced his opinion on where Juventus may have a weakness, pointing to midfield as a potential problem area. In his view, the team’s balance and attacking output are directly tied to the quality and personality of its central players.

He explained, “I’ve got an idea: I think Juve, given their status as a great team, probably have a problem in midfield. They’re made up of players who aren’t exceptionally good. They need players with personality, like Modric, who know how to manage the ball. If you have the ball, your attacking game allows you to have options you wouldn’t have in other situations. If you need the whole team to push you to score, you also risk conceding goals. To find a balance, that’s why they didn’t choose a true striker.” ............

While De Canio’s assessment draws attention to a potential shortcoming, Juventus still boast several talented individuals capable of delivering in midfield. The key may lie in maximising their strengths and ensuring they complement one another, rather than seeking solutions solely through new signings. ............

Juventus warned about Villarreal’s stunning home form

Igor Tudor giving instructions to Juventus players

Juventus travel to Spain to face Villarreal in the Champions League tomorrow, and it is a fixture that presents a significant challenge for the Bianconeri. Their campaign began with a 4-4 draw at home against Borussia Dortmund, a result that fell short of expectations and now increases the pressure on them to secure a positive outcome in their next match. ............

Villarreal have made their stadium one of the toughest venues for visiting teams in both domestic and European competitions. The Spanish side has been in exceptional form at home, winning eight consecutive La Liga matches, making them one of the three strongest teams in Spain when playing on their own ground. This level of performance will make life particularly difficult for Juventus, who are already under pressure to collect three points following their opening game draw.

Spanish journalist Javi Mata shared his perspective ahead of the fixture stating, “I think Juve will respect their opponent. Villarreal’s current numbers don’t lie, as they’re coming off eight consecutive home wins in La Liga. At home, they’re one of the three best teams in Spain. I think it will be a tactical match in which both teams will respect each other a lot. I don’t think Juventus can count on it too much, but I’m also sure a draw wouldn’t be a bad result for them.” ............

The draw in Turin against Dortmund means Juventus must approach the trip to Villarreal with focus and discipline. Champions League matches require consistent performance both at home and away, and the inability to win the opening game has increased the importance of this fixture. Juventus will need to prepare meticulously, ensuring that their tactics and approach can counter Villarreal’s strengths while capitalising on any opportunities that arise. ............

Villarreal vs Juventus: Preview and Prediction

Villarreal vs Juventus Prediction: match preview, predicted lineups, tips & odds on October 1, 2025 – Ratingbet.com

Juventus were involved in an eight-goal thriller on Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League, as they stole a point in sensational fashion. Now, they will be looking to build on it and secure all three points against Villarreal, who started the new season with a defeat.

The home team have had a sensational start to the new season. They are third in La Liga, with five wins and a draw in their seven outings. However, they did not have the best of starts to their Champions League campaign, as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Matchday 1. ............

However, having failed to win any of their last three outings, the Turin-based outfit certainly have their task cut out. The Bianconeri will most likely go all out to claim all three points. ............

Team News & Tactics

Villarreal

 ............

Probable Lineup (4-4-2): Junior; Mourino, Marin, Veiga, Cardona; Buchanan, Gueye, Comesana, Solomon; Pepe, Mikautadze

Villarreal vs Juventus Predicted XI

Juventus

Igor Tudor will be without the services of Fabio Miretti. Meanwhile, Gleison Bremer and Khephren Thuram will undergo late fitness tests to determine their availability. Francisco Conceicao is back in training and could start here.

Against Villarreal, Juventus will stick with the 3-4-2-1 formation, where Michele Di Gregorio will be in goal. In the heart of the defence, Gleison Bremer will start alongside Pierre Kalulu and Lloyd Kelly.

Joao Mario and Andrea Cambiaso will feature as the wing-backs. Meanwhile, the midfield unit will have Manuel Locatelli will pair up with Khephren Thuram in a more central role in the middle of the park.

Francisco Conceicao and Kenan Yildiz will be the two attacking midfielders behind Jonathan David, who will lead the line for Juventus against Villarreal. Conceicao and Yildiz will have a free role, where they could drift wide as well as look to infiltrate from the middle.

Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly; Mario, Thuram, Locatelli, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; David

Villarreal vs Juventus Predicted XI

Key Stats

  • Wednesday’s match will be the third meeting between Villarreal and Juventus in the Champions League.
  • Juventus are yet to win a game against the Yellow Submarine in the UEFA Champions League (D 1L1).
  • Villarreal have only lost one out of their last nine home games in Europe (majority games in the UEFA Europa League).
  • In the Champions League, the Spanish club have only won two out of their last 12 games at El Madrigal.
  • Juventus have only won six out of their last 20 Champions League outings.

Player to Watch

Kenan Yildiz

At just 20, Yildiz has established himself as one of the mainstays in the Juventus first team. The Turkish sensation has had an impressive start to the new season. He has bagged two goals and four assists in his six outings so far.

He had two goal contributions in their UEFA Champions League outing against Borussia Dortmund last time out. Given the kind of form the young winger is in, he can certainly have a massive say on the end result of this fixture. Meanwhile, there could be multiple scouts present in the stands to watch him in action, and he will be eager to put on a show.

Prediction

Villarreal 1-3 Juventus

Juventus will be desperate to claim their first Champions League win of the season when they face Villarreal, and given their attacking form, they will back themselves to get the job done. Despite failing to win in their last three outings, the Old Lady have shown resilience and firepower, particularly in their dramatic 4-4 draw against Borussia Dortmund.

The Yellow Submarine, meanwhile, will be determined to bounce back from their narrow defeat to Tottenham. Their strong league form suggests they can pose problems, but their lack of cutting edge in the final third remains a concern. Against a Juventus side eager to make a statement, Villarreal could struggle to keep pace. The Hard Tackle predicts a 3-1 win for the away team.

Villarreal coach does not believe Juventus is rebuilding their team

Marcelino-Garcia.jpg

Considering the significant changes made to their squad over the summer, many observers have suggested that Juventus are in the midst of a rebuilding process. With a new manager also taking charge this year, there has been an expectation that the players would require time to adapt to fresh methods, tactics, and demands. On paper, it appears to be a transitional period for the Italian side. ............

Villarreal manager Marcelino Garcia has dismissed the idea that Juventus should be regarded as a team in transition. Ahead of the fixture, he offered his assessment of the Bianconeri’s current state, stressing that they remain one of the continent’s strongest outfits.

He said, “No one believes that Juve is a team in rebuilding mode: they’re a great team with top-notch players, and their coach has made few changes to the squad. We’re still integrating the players; anything else is just an excuse. Juve are physically very strong, with world-class players who are very good at duels and transitions in the final third of the pitch. It’s difficult to create chances against them; they have both individual and collective resources.”

His words underline the perception that, regardless of changes in personnel or management, Juventus retain the qualities that have defined them for decades. Their blend of individual brilliance and tactical discipline ensures they remain a formidable opponent for any side in Europe. ............

For Juventus, the “rebuilding” label cannot be used as a shield against criticism or failure. Every player in the squad is aware of the responsibility that comes with representing one of the most historic clubs in world football. Performances are judged against the highest standards, and there is little tolerance for inconsistency at this level. ............

Igor Tudor insists he is pleased with what he has seen from his Juventus players so far this season, but insists that it is far too soon to start making Serie A or Champions League predictions as the Bianconeri prepare to take on Villarreal on Wednesday night. ............

“The team are doing very well, they put in a great performance against Atalanta three days ago, serious and balanced. Champions League tomorrow, everyone is eager and motivated to play a high-level game,” Tudor told the press on Tuesday evening. ............

“Yildiz will play, there’s no tiredness there. The team ran for 122km against Atalanta, we put in a big shift.” ............

“Bremer and Thuram have a couple of problems which means they can’t play, but they should make it back for the game against Milan,” Tudor said. ............

“The Champions League is a platform for all players. They want to play and they are all strong players,” Tudor replied.

“I’m happy to have all three, I always talk to them, I always have to make sure they all feel important. All three are good guys and strong players. I speak with them every day and I like their mentality. All three will give us a big hand. ............

On Wednesday’s opponents Villarreal, Tudor said: “They’re a balanced team and they’re doing well playing at home. Like us, there are some good things and some less good things. We have to make sure our good things are brought through.” ............

“We’ve only just started. It’s fair that some are making evaluations, but there are still 33 games left in the league. Sunday will be a good game (against Milan), but it’s the Champions League tomorrow.

“It’s too soon to say anything, I only care that the team is doing well. I always want to win, as do the guys who push and sacrifice themselves. As a coach, I stay focused on the team. Football is beautiful because it’s unpredictable, but I think the team are doing well at the moment.”

Champions League Preview: Villarreal vs. Juventus

Villarreal vs Juventus Preview 10/01/2025 | Forebet

Wednesday night may only be the second Champions League matchday of the 2025-26 season for Juventus, but there already feels like there’s a good amount of pressure on the shorthanded Bianconeri’s shoulders as they make their way to Spain to face Villarreal.

Part of that is the opponent. Another part of that is the location in which they are playing that opponent. Another piece of it is who Igor Tudor won’t have available to him in Spain. And the final part is just the simple fact that Juventus are coming off a third consecutive draw in all competitions this past weekend against Atalanta. ............

But Villarreal away from home is going to be another matter — and they know that even before you look at the players called up as part of the traveling squad and there’s no sign of your best defender (Gleison Bremer) and arguably your best midfielder (Khephren Thuram). That is the challenge that Tudor faces — how can he get Juventus to both overcome those two absences to two very important players but also get the team firing more in front of goal.

The thing is, Villarreal have had a strong start to the season. Yes, even with a loss to Tottenham to begin their own Champions League campaign two weeks ago. With that, Villarreal will be even more desperate to avoid going 0-for-2 to begin the league phase just like Juve want to avoid coming away with just one point through their first two European fixtures.

Villarreal have the best home record this season La Liga. They’ve won all four of their domestic matchups at the Estadio de la Cerámica. They’ve outscored their opposition 10-1 in those home fixtures. ............

Juventus need to get a result against Villarreal. They need it bad — both to try and go into their meeting with Real Madrid in three weeks in better shape as well as just stop this sudden Thiago Motta-like run of draws both domestically and in Europe. As much as this weekend’s fixture comes with its own unique set of storylines, the simple fact that Juventus are shorthanded against a tough Villarreal team is impossible to avoid.

But hey, maybe Dusan Vlahovic scores 33 seconds in against Villarreal just like he did back in 2022 and things start off rather well. We just won’t talk about the other 89 minutes of that one and hope that this time around goes a little bit better.

TEAM NEWS

  • The two big injury absences were known once the traveling squad was announced: No Bremer, no Khephren Thuram on Wednesday against Villarreal. Tudor said during his pre-match press conference that he expects both players to be back to face AC Milan this weekend. ............
  • Tudor confirmed during his pre-match press conference that Kenan Yildiz will get the start against Villarreal and that the 20-year-old budding superstar is not dealing with any sort of fatigue.
  • However, Tudor gave no hints who else besides Yildiz will start in attack, with the Italian press very much focused over the last few days on the early-season rotation between Vlahovic, Jonathan David and Loïs Openda. “The Champions League is the ideal stage for all our attacking players. I’m happy to have all three of them available,” Tudor said. ............

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

There is a question mark in the midfield when it comes to who will likely start alongside Manuel Locatelli. That is the result of a certain Thuram brother not being able to recover from the slight knock he picked up over the weekend. ............

Weston McKennie will be the guy to start alongside Locatelli in the Juve midfield. For all we know, they could have Koopmeiners joining them as Tudor tweaks his 3-4-1-2 into something that has more bodies in the midfield, but for now the double pivot has limited options — and that’s obviously not a great place to be.

Is it a perfect solution? Of course not.

Juventus without Thuram in the lineup are not as good as when he’s in there. ............

Ex-Italy international Giuseppe Rossi feels his former club Villarreal are ‘favourite’ against Juventus tonight, but hopes Jonathan David will ‘inspire the dreams of many North American children’ like Christian Pulisic. ............

“Villarreal are the favourites. Ten years ago, I would have never thought that, but that’s the reality in the Champions League,” the former striker said.

“They’re third in La Liga behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. Marcelino has already established consistency in their play, something Tudor is still chasing at Juventus.”

A former Villarreal striker, Rossi was asked which players in the current team are similar to him.

“Gerard Moreno resambles me a bit. Pepé and Buchanan are different, but both are dangerous,” Rossi replied.

“Villarreal’s strengths are their team spirit and their connection with the fans. Juventus will find themselves in the middle of a yellow frenzy at the stadium.” ............

“Technically David. Last year, he scored many goals in the Champions League with Lille, but at Juventus, there’s greater pressure,” he said.

“I hope he asserts himself also to inspire the dreams of many North American children, just like Pulisic is doing with his goals at Milan.” ............

“It’s true that there’s competition at a top club, but for a striker, it’s important to feel trusted and to know that if he misses a chance, he won’t immediately be benched,” Rossi said. ............

The former Italy international concluded by saying that Juventus will need a “super Kenan Yildiz” to beat Villarreal tonight.

“The Turkish player is phenomenal and will be a Ballon d’Or contender in the future. He’s 20 years old, but he plays like a 30-year-old with a hundred Champions League appearances,” Rossi argued.

“I admire his ability to attempt a brilliant play for the good of the team, not just for applause. Juventus are Yildiz plus 10 others. In terms of impact, he’s a bit like Yamal for Barcelona. If Juventus want to get back to the top, they’ll need to add more players like him. They are still under construction, and Tudor is doing an excellent job.”

Igor Tudor knows what to expect from Villarreal

Igor-Tudor-Verona.jpg

Igor Tudor has spoken about the upcoming Villarreal versus Juventus encounter, and the Bianconeri manager has made it clear that he knows precisely what to expect in Spain. Both sides enter the fixture still searching for their first victory in this season’s Champions League campaign, with Villarreal suffering a defeat at Tottenham while Juventus were held to a draw at home by Borussia Dortmund.

It is an important match for both clubs, with each eager to secure three points. ............

As he prepared to lead his team to Spain, Tudor addressed the media. He remarked, “I know what to expect and what it will take to do well. We’ll have to play a top-level match, because we’re facing a very strong team. We’re doing well, they have quality in every department, but we want to put in a great performance.” His comments underline both respect for the opponent and confidence in his squad’s current form.

The Villarreal side, aware of the pressure mounting from their lack of wins, will no doubt approach this fixture determined to achieve a result. They will look to harness their home advantage and push for a performance that secures points. For Juventus, this is an opportunity not only to solidify their position in the league but also to continue their unbeaten run this season, which reflects their depth and the presence of several match-winners across their squad. ............

Both teams know the stakes and are expected to give their utmost on the pitch. While Villarreal seeks to prove their strength in front of their supporters, Juventus aim to demonstrate its consistency and adaptability in challenging environments. Tudor’s awareness of the test awaiting his players suggests that Juventus will enter the game with clear tactical discipline, mindful of the intensity that awaits them in Spain. ............

Marcos Senna insists Villarreal does not feel inferior to Juventus

Marcos-Senna.jpg

Juventus face Villarreal in the Champions League in just a few hours, and the Spanish side is not intimidated by the arrival of the Old Lady. Juventus is one of the biggest clubs in world football and historically stronger than Villarreal; yet, past achievements will not determine the outcome of this match. ............

Villarreal’s resilience has been evident, even after their opening European defeat to Tottenham. Rather than losing confidence, they remain in a positive phase of development and are determined to keep building. Their reputation for intensity at home suggests they will provide Juventus with a very stern test.

When asked about the mindset of his former side, Villarreal’s idol Marcos Senna gave an assured response. He stated, “Our feelings are very good, despite the fact that we failed in our first European match against Tottenham (a 1-0 defeat, ed.). We’re in a very positive phase of growth, and we want to put all our players at the coach’s disposal as soon as possible. We don’t feel inferior or superior to anyone; what we have is great respect for all the opponents we face. Obviously, including Juve.” His words highlight the balance of respect and confidence with which Villarreal will approach the fixture. ............

Juventus, despite their stature and unbeaten record, understand the importance of handling Villarreal with caution. The Champions League often rewards teams that combine quality with determination, and the Spanish side has demonstrated both. For Villarreal, this is an opportunity to showcase their growth, while for Juventus, it represents a challenge to maintain consistency in a demanding environment. ............

Champions League Preview: Villarreal vs Juventus – Team News, Line-ups & Prediction

20220215_Villarreal_Juventus_Preview-scaled.jpg

Villarreal endured a rough start to their league phase journey, slumping to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. However, Marcelino Garcia Toral’s men have since bounced back with three consecutive wins in La Liga, most recently beating Athletic Bilbao on home turf. ............

El Submarino Amarillo have history on their side in this matchup. Indeed, they’ve avoided defeat in both previous meetings with Juventus in the Champions League.

After a 1-1 draw in Spain, Juventus fell to a humiliating 3-0 home defeat in March 2022, resulting in a heart-wrenching last-16 elimination. Therefore, revenge will be at the forefront of Juventus’ mind here as they seek a return to winning ways after drawing three matches on the trot.

Igor Tudor’s side pulled off a stunning, late comeback in a 4-4 home draw against Borussia Dortmund in their curtain-raising Champions League fixture. Yet, they’ve since shared the spoils in back-to-back Serie A games against Hellas Verona and Atalanta, losing ground on new pacesetters Milan.

Match Preview

Villarreal

 ............

Juventus

Despite netting four goals in a Champions League match for the first time in four years, Juventus couldn’t take three points against Dortmund last time out. However, Tudor’s charges demonstrated an incredible bounce-back ability in that clash, fighting back three times to avoid defeat, including two injury-time goals.

Juventus will need that fighting spirit today if they’re to defy their disappointing traveling record in the Champions League. The Turin giants have emerged victorious from just one of their last ten away games at Europe’s top table (D4, L5), underscoring the size of the task ahead.

On the contrary, they went unbeaten in all four road matches in last season’s league phase (W1, D3). Moreover, they’ve racked up a win and a draw on two road trips this season. Entertainment has been relatively sparse as six of Juventus’ last seven away games produced under 2.5 goals.

Team News

 ............

As for Juventus, long-term absentees Arkadiusz Milik and Fabio Miretti are not in contention for the starting line-up. The same goes for Gleison Bremer, who sustained another injury against Atalanta. Khephren Thuram is also out with a calf problem.

Villarreal vs Juventus Potential Starting Line-ups

Villarreal (4-4-2): Junior; Mourino, Marin, Veiga, Cardona; Buchanan, Gueye, Comesana, Solomon; Pepe, Mikautadze

Juventus (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Gatti, Kelly; Mario, Koopmeiners, Locatelli, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; David.

Villarreal vs Juventus Prediction

Juventus take this trip undefeated in all competitions this season. Yet, Villarreal have been formidable at home and will likely give the Bianconeri a run for their money. We don’t expect the home side to stroll to victory, but we wouldn’t dare to rule out such a possibility.

Prediction: Villarreal to Win

Tudor did not drop Bremer and Thuram for precautionary sake

Juventus, Bremer e Thuram non convocati alla partita di Champions col Villareal | Sky Sport

Igor Tudor has confirmed that Gleison Bremer and Khephren Thuram will not be part of the squad for the match against Villarreal after both players suffered injuries in the recent fixture against Atalanta. The pair had been training separately from the group in the build-up to the trip to Spain, with hopes that they could recover in time. However, their absence has now been explained by the Juventus manager.

Tudor made it clear that the decision was not a precaution but rather a necessity due to their lack of fitness. He stated: “This isn’t a precautionary suspension. They weren’t fit to play this match. But it looks like they can recover for the match against AC Milan. Yildiz is playing, and there’s no sign of fatigue. Against Atalanta, the team ran 122 km, and they ran at a high level.” His words underline the disappointment of losing two important players while offering optimism that both could return soon. ............

Despite their absence, Juventus are not without options. The squad retains depth in defence and midfield, allowing Tudor to select replacements capable of maintaining a competitive level. The team’s recent physical performance, highlighted by the statistics against Atalanta, suggests that other players are prepared to step up. ............

The focus now turns to how Juventus respond in Spain. To secure a result against Villarreal, they must deliver an improved performance compared to their last three matches. The Spanish side is formidable at home, and Juventus will need discipline, energy and composure to avoid defeat. ............

Multiple sources in Italy claim that Mattia Perin will start in goal for Juventus against Villarreal this evening, replacing Michele Di Gregorio. ............

It is believed to be a technical choice, although Igor Tudor recently stood up for Di Gregorio, insisting that the Italian would be the starting goalkeeper at the Allianz Stadium this season. ............

Di Gregorio has featured in every Juventus match this term, five in Serie A and one in the Champions League, conceding nine goals and keeping just two clean sheets.

Perin, 32, has made 56 appearances across all competitions with Juventus, conceding 49 goals and keeping 25 clean sheets. ............

Villarreal star to miss Juventus clash for Yom Kippur

sevilla-fc-v-villarreal-cf-laliga-ea-sports-1170x780.jpg

La Liga outfit Villarreal will be without the services of a member of the club’s attacking ranks for their upcoming showdown with Italian giants Juventus.

The player in question? Manor Solomon. ............

In turn, it will come as a blow to those of a Villarreal persuasion to learn that Solomon will not be at the disposal of manager Marcelino on Wednesday.

The Yellow Submarine are primed to return to action later this evening, in a Champions League clash with the aforementioned Juventus.

Taking to his official Instagram account this afternoon, however, Solomon confirmed that he will play no part, owing to the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur.

Juventus had to settle for a hard-fought draw away against Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday night, as a last-minute header from former Bianconero defender Renato Veiga meant that Federico Gatti’s bicycle kick and Francisco Conceicao’s individual effort counted for just one point. ............

The Yellow Submarine came out firing early on in the first half: Nicolas Pepe looking particularly bright. The former Arsenal man beat Juan Cabal for pace multiple times, got the Colombian booked, almost won a penalty, before the Bianconeri defender was taken off with a hamstring injury 15 minutes in.

The deadlock was broken almost immediately afterwards. Andrea Cambiaso shuffled over to the left to replace Cabal after his withdrawal, but was unable to stop Pepe and Mikautadze as they burst into the area. The Ivorian laid off for the Georgian, who slotted away a tidy, first-time finish. ............

Conceicao came on for Koopmeiners at the interval, and his impact was immediate.

The Portuguese put one on a plate for David almost immediately after kick-off, only for the Canadian to skew off target from five yards out.

Then, he won the throw-in right next to the corner flag which led to Gatti’s wondergoal. McKennie’s long throw was flicked on by Locatelli, only for Gatti to pull off a bicycle kick in the middle of the area.

Conceicao then intercepted Dani Parejo’s loose back pass, carried the ball the length of the half and slotted past Arnau Tenas with ease one-on-one to put the Old Lady ahead.  ............

Conceicao’s hard work was undone right at the last, however, when former Juventus defender Renato Veiga headed home from a corner in the final minute of regular time.

Wednesday’s result means that Juventus have now picked up two consecutive draws in the Champions League, and four in a row across all competitions.

Villarreal 2-2 Juventus

Mikautadze (V) 18’, Gatti (J) 49′, Conceicao (J) 56′, Veiga (V) 90′.

Francisco Conceicao believes that Juventus need to improve if they are to win in the Champions League, insists that his side’s improved second half performance against Villarreal was not solely down to him, and has revealed that Federico Gatti attempting a bicycle kick is nothing new: ‘He tries that sometimes’.  ............

Conceicao was the player of the match for Juventus on the night, but insists that his teammates already knew that they had to improve, and where to improve, before his introduction at half-time.

“I’m not saying that (the game changed) because I came on, but that the team understood what we needed to improve at the end of the first half,” the Portuguese said after full-time.

And on where Juventus need to improve generally, Conceicao said: “We have to train a little better: We improved in the second half but couldn’t get the win.

“We missed another goal, which we deserved, but it must be said that we played a strong team. We have to continue, be strong and think about the next big challenge in Serie A.” ............

And a final word on Gatti, who scored with a bicycle kick in the second half: “He tries it sometimes, it’s great he managed to do it today. We have to continue working hard if we want to win in the Champions League.”

Igor Tudor believes that Juventus were too frantic, nervous and misplaced too many passes in their 2-2 draw away against Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, but insists that his defenders are performing ‘better than anyone else’ despite suggestions that his side are conceding too many goals. ............

Tudor began his post-match interview with an apology for the Juventus supporters, and insisted that his side ‘can’t’ be conceding last minute goals from corners as they did in Spain.

I’m sorry, it’s part of the game. You can’t lose a game in the last seconds from a corner like that. We’ll take this point and move on.

“We worked and prepared as best we could, but we did have some difficulties. There was too much of a frenzy and too many nerves. Too many simple passes we got wrong.” ............

“Chico came on and made the difference. We did what we could, even with some mistakes. Unfortunately they came in the last few minutes.”

When asked if Juventus have an ‘issue’ with conceding, Tudor replied: “The three defenders are doing better than anyone else. We need to be winning more second balls. The three at the back held the fort for the whole game.” ............

“There’s always a feeling of regret when you concede a goal in the last minute. It would be nice to play 90 minutes at the highest possible level, but it’s not easy. We have our weaknesses, too,” Tudor concluded.

Juventus had to settle for a 2-2 draw away against Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday evening: Despite a game-changing performance from Francisco Conceicao, the Bianconeri were pegged back in the final minute by former loanee Renato Veiga. ............

Villarreal 2-2 Juventus: Player ratings

Juventus: Perin 6; Kalulu 5.5, Gatti 7, Kelly 6; Cambiaso 5 (Rugani n/a), McKennie 5.5, Locatelli 6.5, Cabal 4.5 (J.Mario 6); Koopmeiners 4.5 (Conceicao 7.5), Yildiz 6.5 (Adzic n/a); David 5 (Vlahovic n/a).

Best Juventus player: Conceicao 7.5 – The Portugal international came on at the interval for Teun Koopmeiners, who had next to no impact during the first half, and completely changed the game. He won the throw-in that led to Federico Gatti’s bicycle kick, scored the goal that put Juventus into the lead, and should have had an assist to his name had Jonathan David been able to find the target from five yards out.

Worst Juventus player: Cabal and Koopmeiners 4.5 – An evening to forget for the Colombian in Spain. Nicolas Pepe had his number from the off, beat him on pace numerous times, got the Juventus wing-back booked and almost won a penalty off him. Then, Cabal’s hamstring went 15 minutes in. The early booking meant that Igor Tudor might have brought him off early, anyway. Koopmeiners was also taken off at half-time after after having little to no impact in one of the attacking roles alongside Kenan Yildiz.

Coach: Igor Tudor 6 – Until the final few minutes, this was a game of two halves. Juventus tried to press Villarreal in the first half, but the Yellow Submarine were often able to play around it. Juventus, particularly after the introduction of Conceicao, were a much improved side in the second half, but conceding from a corner in the last minute left the head coach raging during his post-match interview.

Villarreal ratings

Tenas 6; Mourino 6, Veiga 7, Marin 5, Pedraza 6.5; Gueye 6.5, Parejo 5.5, Comesana 6; Pepe 7, Mikautadze 7, Buchanan 6.

Villarreal 2 - Juventus 2: Initial reaction and random observations

FBL-EUR-C1-VILLARREAL-JUVENTUS

There were days in which Juventus holding onto a slim but important lead was something that they would see out on a regular basis. It was stressful, sure, but it was also a trait in which they became such a successful club once again. The defense bent but rarely broke, giving us the kind of faith that leads were actually in safe hands when Juventus were trying to protect one.

These current days are not like those previous ones.

We saw it in important fixtures over the last couple of seasons. We saw it against provincial sides, too. The same script repeated itself — Juventus tried to defend their lead, only for the opposition to level things up on the doorstep of second-half stoppage time and level things up just when you thought they might actually see out the win.

We can now add Villarreal to the list of clubs that Juventus have seen score with only stoppage time to go. And not only was it a former Juventus player in Renato Veiga — yeah, sure, he was in bianconero for less than six months, but he still wore those stripes — but also in a second half where Igor Tudor’s squad was the better side. Villarreal didn’t test Mattia Perin in goal the same way they did in the first half, but on what proved to be one of the final scoring chances of the night, Juventus’ zonal marking failed to keep track of their former teammate and arguably the biggest threat in the air on the field. ............

But the ifs can only go so far once again. This Juventus team has now only won one game — the Derby d’Italia thriller — since the September international break ended. At least when it comes to the results, it’s suddenly looking a lot like last season when it felt like all Juve did was record draw after draw. ............

It’s the kind of gut punch in which feels all too familiar in multiple ways. Juventus were playing well as they ventured out on their second-half comeback that saw Federico Gatti score an absolute beauty of an overhead kick out of nowhere and Francisco Conceição turn nothing into something with a little bit of individual magic to put his team ahead for the first time all night.

Even as the second half went on, it wasn’t like Villarreal were incredibly threatening. Perin, the somewhat surprising starter in goal even with the rumors earlier in the day surfacing that he might get the call, wasn’t forced into any other major saves like he was on multiple shots in the first half. It felt, at least a little bit, like Juve were actually in control of things and were going to see this thing out. ............

With no Bremer out there, this defense is pretty much the same we saw during the second half of last season. And that is one that couldn’t hold onto leads and rarely recorded shutouts like they did the turn of the new year. The fact that Veiga was able to rise up like he did and wasn’t really challenged at all knowing that this was the 90th minute is just inexcusable. You can’t allow that to happen if you’re marking either him personally or the area in which he is taking up. And let’s face it, there sure were bodies around Veiga … not exactly challenging for the ball.

So on and on it goes. ............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Man, if only Jonathan David had scored one of those chances he had, huh?
  • OK, so it’s not just something to pile on David, but a 3-1 lead sure would have been nice to have considering how the rest of that game played out. ............
  • Perin had a good night in goal. Those two first-half saves he made obviously were great because it kept things within touching distance and allowed Juve to actually go on the comeback that they did. But actually allowing the corner that led to Villarreal tying things up to actually happen is a blemish on his performance. You come out like that, at that time of the game, you have to prevent the corner from happening — and he missed.
  • I love the Gatti story. I really do. But also, if he’s your best defender on the field when you’re trying to lock down three points in the Champions League, I just don’t know what that says about your defense as a whole. ............
  • The Conceição sub for Teun Koopmeiners at the beginning of the second half sure worked out well, didn’t it? Tudor took off a player that wasn’t doing much and instead put on a player who ended up doing a whole lot of everything. There were things to take issue with from what Tudor did against Villarreal, but bringing Conceição when he did certainly ain’t one of them. ............
  • Brutal turn of events for Cabal, who went from the thrill of his first goal with Juventus (and in Serie A) to having to be subbed off after 15 minutes due to injury. Guessing we don’t see him for a few weeks, if not longer, thanks to that hamstring injury that didn’t look good at all simply by his reaction to it.
  • It was a rather subdued night for Kenan Yildiz, who took three shots but didn’t put any of them on frame. Who knows how much fatigue is playing into it, but his last couple of shot attempts weren’t even close to the Villarreal goal. ............
  • Maybe introducing a defender in Daniele Rugani who hasn’t played a single minute since Juve’s preseason slate in August with 10 minutes to go in a game you’re trying to lock down and win wasn’t the best idea. ............
  • Juventus were ninth in the UCL league phase live table right before Veiga’s goal hit the back of the net. They’re now sitting in 23rd. ............

‘Angry’ Tudor defends Juventus trio: “Better than anyone else”

VILLARREAL, SPAIN - OCTOBER 01: Players of Juventus pose for a team photograph prior to the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD2 match between Villarreal CF and Juventus at Estadio de la Ceramica on October 01, 2025 in Villarreal, Spain. (Photo by Aitor Alcalde/Getty Images)

Juventus manager Igor Tudor was upset with his team after squandering the lead against Villarreal in the dying minutes.

Following the 4-4 draw with Borussia Dortmund on the opening day, the Bianconeri were very close to securing their first Champions League victory of the season, as they turned the result upside-down after the break, mostly thanks to Francisco Conceicao’s introduction. ............

After the encounter, Tudor admitted that the late goal was hard to swallow, while praising Conceicao for the great impact he made following his entry.

“I’m angry about that goal, you can’t concede it like that at the end,” said the Croatian manager in his post-match interview.

“We pushed hard in the second half. We’ll take a point and move on.

“Conceicao made the difference; we did what we could. Even a few mistakes are understandable, which is a shame because there’s certainly regret.

“We worked hard for two days. There were difficulties and too much frenzy, with a bit of nervousness. Too many simple mistakes.” ............

“In my opinion, the three defenders are doing better than anyone else. We’re lacking a bit of nastiness on the second balls.

“The three at the back have held the fort every game: Kelly, Kalulu, and Gatti, who scored a great goal. I liked that.

“When you concede a goal in the last minute, there’s always disappointment. We always build on that, we always work hard.” ............

Gatti disappointed despite astonishing goal: “These were three crucial points”

Juventus held to 2-2 draw by Villarreal after dramatic late equaliser | FMT

Juventus defender Federico Gatti laments his team’s 2-2 draw against Villarreal on the second matchday of the Champions League group stage.

The Bianconeri had already registered a draw on the opening day of the competition, when they rallied from behind to rescue a point against Borussia Dortmund in dramatic fashion.

This time, it was quite the contrary, with the Italians allowing the victory to slip through their hands due to a late goal from a familiar face.

While Renato Veiga deserves the credit for a well-taken header, Juve’s defending is coming under scrutiny once more, as they, once again, failed to contain the opposition from a set-piece situation. ............

“I saw my goal and it was too good. It was a bit instinctive, and it went well,” said Gatti in his post-match interview.

“But I’m really disappointed with the result, because those are two points that you pay for in the long run. We have to mature, because when we’re ahead in the result, it should be game over. I’m sorry.” ............

“Nastiness? It’s something we need to work on. We need to all get together and talk about it because once you take the lead, games have to finish. You have to be a team of free-spirited players, as they say.

“It’s disappointing because the three points were crucial. But we need to put this game behind us immediately, and now on Sunday we have another crucial one (against Milan), so we need to recharge our batteries.

“We’re in a moment where we’ve been made to pay for every half-mistake. It’s disappointing because we’re throwing away a game we were in control of in the second half. I really felt we were in control.” ............
