The old line that every goalkeeper who plays against Juventus suddenly becomes some Titan-level mix of Lev Yashin and Gianluigi Buffon has gotten cliche over the years, but cliches often form around truth. And over the last week, it has been a deep truth.

 

After watching Rui Silva reject shot after  shot on Tuesday in the Champions League, Juve returned home on Saturday for the Derby della Mole, only to see the Granata’s backup keeper, Alberto Paleari, go Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan and rattle off a series of clutch saves that kept the year’s first Derby scoreless. ............

 

MICHELE DI GREGORIO - 7. Made a massive save near the hour mark that kept Che Adams from opening the scoring from a great position. Other than that he didn’t have a whole lot to do, but was quick enough off his line to ensure that a few balls that did get behind the defense were wrapped up.

DANIELE RUGANI - 6.5. Completed 98.2 percent of his passes and kept Simeone mostly silent throughout the first half. It was a little worrying that the Argentine nearly got straight through the defense the moment he was withdrawn.

TEUN KOOPMEINERS - 6.5. Made a pair of key passes and also led the team with four clearances. His long balls weren’t as accurate as they could have been, but how wild would it be if this was where he needed to be all along?

WESTON McKENNIE - 6.  ............

MANUEL LOCATELLI - 6.5.  ............

KHÉPHREN THURAM - 6.5. Co-led the team with four key passes, and his four tackles were more than anyone who saw the field on either team. He’s starting to find those powerful midfield runs again.

ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6.  ............

FRANCISCO CONCEIÇÃO - 6. Tied for the team lead with three dribbles and was barely denied by Paleari in the first half. Still, he needs to diversify his game a little bit, because he’s getting predictable and he won’t be able to coast on pure talent for long.

KENAN YILDIZ - 6. Made four key passes, three dribbles, and hit the target with two of four shots, but just couldn’t get the final result out of things. Looked a little fatigued by the end.

DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 6. The most interesting statistic for him was three tackles, as he led a press that caused Torino some problems over the course of the evening. Could’ve done better with some more end product though, even though his supply wasn’t fantastic.

JONATHAN DAVID - 5.5. The lack of end product is the only thing that didn’t bring this up to a solid 6. He was in good positions a lot of times but was unable to sneak the ball into the goal, dueing to a lack of service and that tiny bit of missing edge.

EDON ZHEGROVA - 6. Added some variety to the attack on the right, and had a key pass as well as two shots. Looked a lot more dangerous than a younger Conceição. Putting him in alongside David was a good touch, given how well they know each other.

MANAGER ANALYSIS

There isn’t a whole much to complain about for Spalletti here. Like Tuesday, he had the team playing quite well only for a combination of poor finishing and insane goalkeeping kept Juve at bay.

 

If I could quibble, I would’ve sent Joao Mario on the field as opposed to Openda. That kind of creativity on the wings is a boon in any system. Seeing him and Zhegrova together on the right is a terrifying prospect.

 

But, utlimately, the only advice Spalletti could give his charges—especially given the way Paleari was playing—was “finish better.” The tactics didn’t have a much different look to them, and despite his suggestion that he may change systems over the break, he clearly likes Koopmeiners playing from deep on the defensive line. Time will tell if he shakes things up. ............

Spalletti: Juventus need ‘more time’ for new system

 

 

Juventus coach Luciano Spalletti is delighted by the players’ availability, but insists he’ll need ‘more time’ to work on a four-man defence.

 

Juventus return to the pitch after the international break on Saturday, visiting Fiorentina at the Stadio Franchi. ............

 

“We have worked, but I didn’t have many players available. With those who were there, we focused on things that I believe are important,” Spalletti said.

 

“Yesterday, I looked at something new with the entire team; they were focused and showed availability. Somebody came from a 10-hour flight, but still wanted to be there. We had to be cautious with some of them; somebody worked separately, but today everyone is available.” ............

 

“We should not be affected by bad moments because we might doubt our quality, and we must use it in certain moments of the game. It’s a work on the team as a unit: what to do at which moment of the game. It’s hard to do, and we are working mostly on this.” ............

 

“Koopmeiners has proved that he can adapt to that situation, and a modern footballer knows how to do it. I’m happy he reacted positively because it was not guaranteed. Safe to say Spalletti doesn’t expect a warm reception at the Stadio Franchi, especially as the Juventus coach.

 

“I know the environment well because I’ve spent many years there. I’ll accept every situation because I’ve been there already,” he said.

 

“I’ll enter the field as the Juventus coach and will accept everything. Out of love for this sport, we must show the best of us, not the worst. I’ve always respected everyone. I’m serene in being the Juventus coach also in the Fiorentina stadium, and I expect a great game from my players. It will be a tough game for us.” ............

 

There are reports that Juventus have put contract talks with Kenan Yildiz on hold, but Spalletti didn’t want to speak about the Turkish star’s future in Turin.

 

“I won’t discuss the renewal thing, is not up to me. I look at it, but the club knows what to do,” he said.

 

“To me, it’s easy with Yildiz, he’s the one who breaks the systems and patterns. Whoever links up with Yildiz links up with the rest of the team. He knows how to stay in the team and he has leadership skills, so it’s the best for me.”

Round 12: Fiorentina vs. Juventus match preview

 

 

A whole lot has happened since the last time Juventus and Fiorentina played each other back in March. So much that it’s almost leaving you in the kind of thought process where you’re probably bound to forget something or just suddenly go “Oh, right! That happened, too!” It’s the kind of situation at each club that probably nobody wants to actually see the team they root for happen, but Juve and Fiorentina supporters have seen so much change over the last eight months that sometimes it just makes your head spin. ............

 

As Juventus heads to Florence for Saturday’s return from the November international break, both clubs are coping with their own difficult starts to the 2025-26 season that have seen plenty of panic and frustration ensue. Juventus are, somehow, just five points off league-leading Inter Milan and Roma but still sitting out of the top four — and that is the better of the two situations. That’s because you’ll have to keep on scrolling all the way down to the very bottom of the Serie A table to find Fiorentina — which, like Juventus, have recently made a managerial change after Stefano Pioli’s return to Florence went about as horribly as some feared it might.

 

In short, you’ve got a Juventus team hoping to start something positive with Luciano Spalletti out of the international break, while new Fiorentina manager Paolo Vanoli is hoping that he can do something that Pioli didn’t do in Serie A this season. That would be win a game.

Seems to be an interesting little Saturday in store, doesn’t it?

 

Well, maybe. There is the simple fact that Juve are still trying to adjust to life under Spalletti and have only had a full squad training with him for the last few days of the international break. ............

 

It will, of course, be interesting just how much different Juve look after the break as compared to Spalletti’s first three games in charge before it. Is this when Spalletti rolls out a new formation that includes a four-man backline? Does he he continue to use the three-man defense and maybe make some changes up front and/or on the wings? How will he take advantage of the fact that Fiorentina also have a brand new manager and they are also probably still adjusting to life following Pioli’s brutal 11-game run domestically to start the season? ............

 

In the end, though, the biggest thing Juventus need to improve on is what has hampered them both before and after Spalletti took over as manager: their finishing in front of goal. It’s been the thing that has one of the biggest reasons as to why Juve’s last two games against Sporting CP and Torino in the Derby della Mole have been draws rather than wins that Spalletti can boast about coming out of the break.

 

Fiorentina have the worst defense in Serie A. This isn’t some sort of statistical quirk because we’re working with a small sample size of two or three games. We’re nearly a third of the way through the 2025-26 season, and Fiorentina have allowed a Serie A-high 18 goals. Their goal differential of minus-9 is second-worst in the league behind only Hellas Verona, the team that sits right in front of them in 19th place. ............

• The big development with Juventus’ traveling squad to Florence being announced is that Dusan Vlahovic has been deemed fit and is available to play against his former side. Just how he will be able to play remains to be seen, but the fact that he’s part of the traveling squad is a pretty good sign that he’ll play some sort of part against Fiorentina. ............
• Bremer is still a couple of weeks away from making his return, with the big Brazilian reportedly targeting Juventus’ Dec. 7 trip to Naples to face Spalletti’s former squad Napoli as a potential comeback fixture. ............
• You’ll notice that Juan Cabal is not on that list of injured players. The Colombian defender returned to training on Thursday after missing close to two months due to a hamstring injury he picked up against Villarreal.
• Same goes for Lloyd Kelly, who is back in the squad after missing the last couple of weeks due to a muscle injury.
• With Kelly back in the squad, Spalletti did note at his pre-match press conference that it could mean Teun Koopmeiners returns to more of his natural role as a midfielder. Or, as Spalletti put it, “a more advanced position.” ............

 

JUVENUTS PLAYER TO WATCH

We don’t just how much Vlahovic will play against Fiorentina in his latest trip back to Florence. So, because of that, it feels rather appropriate that we at least dedicate some sort of time to the guy who could very well fill his spot. ............

 

 

A lot of the predicted lineups are thinking that it’s going to be Loïs Openda stepping in for Vlahovic against Fiorentina on Saturday evening. If that’s the case, then it will be interesting for multiple reasons:

• It’s not the natural guy you think would step in for Vlahovic.
• It’s something that might result in a formation change from Spalletti even if sticks with a three-man backline.
• Openda has not been very good since coming to Juventus.

Sure, take what you want out of the statement that “Openda hasn’t scored a goal in seven months” because that’s a little bit of crafting the narrative around the calendar. ............

 

 

So, I remind you: Fiorentina have the worst defense in Serie A. Juventus under Spalletti have created chances but haven’t done a very good job of finishing those chances. It’s come with Vlahovic being in the lineup as compared to Openda, but the fact that they’re creating more chances under their new manager is a start.

 

Now it’s about finishing those chances — and Openda could very well play a big part of that if he’s in the starting lineup. And you can only imagine what getting a goal right out of the international break could do for a player who has struggled in his first three months with his new club and probably isn’t riding high with confidence.
