Juan Cabal came off the bench to snatch all three points for Juventus against 10 men, continuing the dire Bologna record in this fixture, and leapfrogging them into fifth place.

This was a direct battle for position, as the Rossoblu were two points ahead in the table. Juve lost last week to Napoli, but boosted their Champions League chances in a midweek win over Pafos. ............

Juve were unbeaten at the Dall’Ara since November 1998 and hadn’t lost to Bologna at all since a 2-0 result in February 2011. ............

There was an early double Michele Di Gregorio save, first on Tommaso Pobega’s acrobatic flick from a free kick, then the Riccardo Orsolini follow-up at the back post.

Orsolini’s trademark curler was smothered and Teun Koopmeiners was booked so will be suspended next week against Roma. ............

Juventus had the ball in the net on 36 minutes when David flicked on a long ball for McKennie, who won the ricochet off on-rushing Ravaglia and generously rolled across for the Canadian to deposit into an empty net. However, McKennie was offside on the initial flick. ............

Yet Bologna had a huge chance on the stroke of half-time, as Orsolini’s inspired disguised pass released Nadir Zortea to thump his finish against the underside of the bar from a tight angle with Di Gregorio just getting his fingertips to it. ............

Juventus finally found a breakthrough when Kenan Yildiz saw his control and strike deflected inches over by Heggem. The resulting corner was taken short for a Kenan Yildiz cross that found substitute Juan Cabal for a totally free header from six yards. ............

The situation went from bad to worse for the hosts, as soon after Heggem got caught out by a long Di Gregorio ball and bundled Lois Openda over outside the area for a straight red card.

There was more good news for Juventus, as Gleison Bremer made his comeback for the final 15 minutes, the first appearance since the meniscus injury on September 27.

Conceicao had penalty appeals rejected after running into Lucumi’s arm, infuriating the defender, while Federico Bernardeschi’s effort failed to trouble Di Gregorio.

Ravaglia kept the scoreline down with a great one-handed save on Openda’s daisy-cutter from 12 yards on the Cabal lay-off, then Openda fired another promising opportunity over in stoppages. ............

Bologna 0-1 Juventus: Spalletti’s substitutions worked a charm

Juan Cabal and Luciano Spalletti

Juventus bounced back from last week’s defeat in Naples by edging past Bologna thanks to a solitary second-half strike from Juan Cabal.

Luciano Spalletti kept his 3-4-2-1 system, with Jonathan David spearheading the lineup, supported by Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao. In midfield, Khephren Thuram connected with Manuel Locatelli, while Weston McKennie and Andrea Cambiaso started on the wings. ............

Bologna were the better side in the opening minutes, but Michele Di Gregorio produced a double save to prevent an early goal. ............

Juventus thought they had broken the deadlock in the 35th minute, when Federico Ravaglia’s attempted clearance was blocked by McKennie, who unselfishly laid it into David’s path. The Canadian scored with a simple tap-in, but the goal was disallowed for an offside on McKennie in the buildup. ............

Juventus eventually found the breakthrough in the second half from an unexpected source. Yildiz’s promising shot was blocked by Torbjørn Heggem, but he made amends from the ensuing corner kick. The Turk played a give-and-go with Conceicao before sending a sublime cross to the box that was met by Juan Cabal, whose low header left Ravaglia stranded.

The Colombian wasn’t the only second-half introduction who made a swift impact, as fellow substitute Lois Openda was equally effective.

The Belgian striker won an aerial ball against Hegem and charged towards Ravaglia’s goal, forcing the Norwegian defender to bring him down from the back. The referee had no other choice but to show the latter a straight red that left Bologna with a man down.

Afterwards, it was all Juventus, but Yildiz and Openda wasted a few glorious opportunities to double the visitors’ lead. ............

Juventus have Juan Cabal to thank after picking up a vital three points in a 1-0 victory away against Bologna in Serie A on Sunday evening.  ............

Bologna 0-1 Juventus: Player ratings!

Bologna: Ravaglia 6; Zortea 6 (De Silvestri 5.5), Heggem 4, Lucumi 6 (Bernardeschi n/a), Miranda 6; Moro 6 (Holm 6), Pobega 6; Orsolini 6.5, Ferguson 6 (Sulemana 5.5), Cambiaghi 5.5; Dallinga 5.5 (Castro 5.5).

Best Bologna player: Orsolini 6.5 –  ............

Coach: Vincenzo Italiano 6 –  ............

Juventus: Di Gregorio 6.5; Kalulu 6, Kelly 6.5, Koopmeiners 6 (Bremer 6); McKennie 6, Thuram 6, Locatelli 6, Cambiaso 5.5 (Cabal 7); Conceicao 6.5 (Miretti n/a), Yildiz 7, David 6 (Openda 6.5).

Best Juventus player: Cabal 7 – Two goals in six Serie A appearances for the Colombian now. Immediate impact off the bench on Sunday evening, evading his marker to claim a free header in the middle of the Bologna penalty area. That was a big confidence boost to begin his evening.

Coach: Luciano Spalletti 6.5 – That was a big six-pointer in the race for Champions League football, and the perfect way to bounce back after a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Napoli last time out in Serie A. Had Juventus been a touch more clinical, that would have been a slightly more flattering scoreline. Still, managed the game well after going ahead, even if their life was made easier with Heggem’s sending off.

Luciano Spalletti insists the victory over Bologna was ‘the most important’ of his Juventus career so far, but notes where Juan Cabal, Lois Openda and Jonathan David can improve.

The Bianconeri knew the importance of this fixture, as they were two points behind Bologna in the Serie A table, so it was a head-to-head for European places. ............

“We were facing a team that has an identity, quality and enthusiasm, they were built well and even down to 10 men made it difficult for us,” Spalletti said.

“Having won here means even more for my players, and they must be congratulated this evening. They did really well.” ............

“I had seen things done well in training, and told the directors that I saw the players energetic and reacting well in training. We needed a performance that could give them confidence, and I hope after this we can continue to improve,” continued Spalletti.

“Aside from the goal, the overall performance needs to be evaluated in football. Juventus were in the heart of the game for 90 minutes tonight, battled for every ball, went beyond these individual duels that Bologna force you into, and this bodes well for the future.

“Cabal must learn to keep some of his emotions in check. He is like a pedigree horse with his strength and ability to sprint repeatedly, he has talent with back-heel flicks, but talent is also repeating the 100 metre runs 20 times. He doesn’t mind being in one-on-one situations, is good in the air, but in the games he played so far he wasn’t precise enough for his talent, so I had to be hard on him.” ............

“I liked his performance. Openda is a different player to Jonathan David, who frankly seems more like a second striker to me than a centre-forward, as he combines with teammates. Openda has more power, and probably against teams like Bologna feels more at ease, because he can run at them with sheer pace when those spaces open up,” concluded Spalletti. ............

Juventus 1 - Bologna 0: Initial reaction and random observations

Bologna FC 1909 v Juventus FC - Serie A

A week ago, Luciano Spalletti and Juventus went to southern Italy and got things wrong from the very beginning. Spalletti’s approach was the wrong one, and the way in which he wanted to play was very much not well-executed by the players on the field. It was a mess, and something that Juve could really recover from against the reigning Serie A champions.

Seven days later, Spalletti got things right when it came to the approach. And while the on-field execution wasn’t always the best that it could be — which feels like an understatement considering the current state of Juventus these days — Spalletti’s squad was able to come away with three vital points against a direct competitor for a spot in the top four this season.

Juan Cabal’s goal all of three minutes after coming on as a substitute proved to be the difference in Juventus’ 1-0 win over the always-difficult Bolgona at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara on Sunday night. Spalletti got things much more on the money compared to how things went against Napoli seven days earlier, and now he can stake claim to having a team that is within striking distance of the top four. Of course, some of that depends on how Roma does against Como on Monday night, but with that same Roma squad on the schedule and making their to Turin next weekend, getting back on track domestically and jumping over at least one rival for a spot in the top four was crucial on this chilly night in Emilia-Romagna. ............

But for a team that has struggled to consistent win under their last couple of managers, Spalletti now has a team that has won five out of their last six in all competitions. Again, I know it hasn’t always been pretty or how a lot of us would like to see it, but one of the biggest things Spalletti needed to do in the short term was to just get this team from stop dropping points so damn often.

Loss to Napoli aside, they’re starting to do that.

Fact is, both Spalletti and the Juventus players needed this win badly. They have gotten a little wind back i ntheir sails in Europe with a couple of wins, but it was in these kinds of tests against teams in or around the top four where they were going to find out a lot about themselves this month. They didn’t pass the Napoli test at all — and Spalletti admitted as such when it came to himself and the team as a whole. Against Bologna, though, it was different. He got the approach spot on. He got his subs right. He managed the game incredibly well after Juventus got the lead.

The last thing Juve needed to do was to put forward a solid performance, fight hard to get the lead, actually get the lead only to cough it up in the final minutes and drop points as a result. You know, the kind of thing we’ve seen on plenty of occasions the last couple of years. But rather than actually do that, they hung on — and three points are coming back to Turin with them.

You could say “Well, it’s easy to do that against a team playing down a man!” and that’s potentially true in theory. But Bologna are one of the few sides who play the kind of way where they could have easily overcome that kind of setback in the second half and still gotten points against Juventus. They just defy logic sometimes, and Vincenzo Italiano is the kind of manager who has a kind of approach that lends itself to chaos. ............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • If only every sub Spalletti brought on could score a goal three minutes after coming on like Cabal did, right? ............
  • Good for Cabal, though. He’s had some tough games the last couple of weeks. But the dude was absolutely FLYING to get on the end of that cross.
  • And wait … Juve scored off a corner??? I don’t know what to do with myself now.
  • Let’s just get it out of the way now: Lloyd Kelly, Man of the Match? Yeah, you ain’t gonna be wrong if you feel that way. This might have been his best game in a Juventus shirt. ............
  • Those couple of Michele Di Gregorio saves in the first half look so incredibly important in hindsight. They were big in the moment, but they’re even the more important now that we can look back and pinpoint them as to why Bologna were held off the scoreboard.
  • This was one of Di Gregorio’s best game of the season after some tough outings over the last month or two. Maybe, just maybe, he’s starting to lock in like he did as the 2024-25 season went on.
  • Speaking of defense: BREMER BREMER BREMER BREMER BREMER BREMER.
  • Yes, I am not the only one to be overjoyed by seeing Gleison Bremer and his incredibly sharp-looking haircut back on the field after he had knee surgery 2 1/2 months ago. Welcome back, big fella, you have been so incredibly missed in this team.
  • Memo to Spalletti: YOU SAID YOU WILL NOT RUSH BREMER AND YOU STAY TRUE TO THAT, OK? I know it will be tempting to throw Bremer in there with a week in between games the next couple of weeks, but this is no time to just suddenly go against your line of thinking with a big fixture coming up next week.
  • That being said, it would be pretty great to see Bremer back in the starting lineup against Roma. But only if he’s ready for it. Juve need to get this one right. ............
  • Another Kenan Yildiz goal contribution? WELL CONSIDER ME STUNNED, FOLKS.
  • Weston McKennie covering more distance than anybody on the field is becoming such a common occurrence that it’s not even surprising anymore. You know, like as surprising as Yildiz doing something that contributes to a goal. ............
  • Can Cambiaso stop taking corners and free kicks? I’ve seen enough of him not even clearing the first defender on his cross.
  • I think Giorgio Chiellini’s reaction on the quick shot to the crowd on what proved Cambiaso’s final “contribution” before being subbed off pretty much summed up the latter’s form at the moment. Just not good enough.
  • Unfortunately, Francisco Conceição didn’t get a goal on his birthday. He did, however, get smacked in the face and pick up off the turf like he was some sort of little kid not wanting to go back inside after playing with his friends in the backyard. Not exactly the greatest thing to take place, but it was a funny visual. ............
  • Another full 90 for Pierre Kalulu. There might not be anybody happier that Juve don’t have a midweek fixture. Enjoy the rest, my friend.
  • Also pretty obvious, but it’s important to note that Yildiz will get a full week of rest ahead of facing one of Serie A’s best defenses. I like the sound of that. At least the first part.
  • Juventus’ next five opponents after facing Roma: Pisa, Lecce, Sassuolo, Cremonese and Cagliari. That’s incredibly favorable even if there are a couple of tricky ones in there. You get a win against Roma and you jump back in the Champions League in mid-January.

Juventus player ratings vs Bologna: Cabal enjoys his best display in black-and-white

Bologna 0-1 Juventus: Super-sub Cabal downs 10-man hosts

 ............

Juventus XI (3-4-2-1)

Michele Di Gregorio – 7

The Italian produced a double save early in the match, and then put a fingertip to Nadir Zortea’s smashing shot at the stroke of half-time. Never put a foot wrong.

Pierre Kalulu – 6

 ............

Lloyd Kelly – 7.5

A monstrous display at the back from the Englishman who ate Thijs Dallinga alive, winning every single aerial duel against the Dutch striker.

Teun Koopmeiners – 5.5

 ............

Weston McKennie – 6.5

 ............

Manuel Locatelli – 6

 ............

Khephren Thuram – 6.5

 ............

Andrea Cambiaso – 5.5

An underwhelming display from the Italian international on his return to the Dall’Ara. He was struggling in his duel against Zortea, and his execution was off cue more often than not.

Francisco Conceicao – 6

The Portuguese caused havoc on the right wing as is often the case, but still has a knack for going down too easily, so his reputation is preceding him with match officials.

Kenan Yildiz – 7

The Turkish star was at the centre of every dangerous Juventus play, including the winner, when he provided the assist with a lovely cross to the box. However, the youngster will feel he should have scored from one of the inviting chances that came his way.

Jonathan David – 5.5

 ............

Substitutes

Juan Cabal – 7

Aside from a needlessly botched clearance that almost cost Juventus, the Colombian had a dream outing. He escaped his market to head home the solitary goal of the contest, and put Openda through on a couple of occasions.

Lois Openda – 6.5

Another influential substitution from Spalletti. The Belgian’s pace was a menace against Bologna’s high defensive line, and it forced Heggem to commit a challenge that earned him a red card. However, the 25-year-old still has to improve his finishing.

Gleison Bremer – N/A

Fabio Miretti – N/A

Juventus supporters at the Stadio Dall’Ara last night paid tribute to an emotional Federico Bernardeschi after the Old Lady’s 1-0 win over Bologna. ............

It was the first time Bernardeschi met with his former fans as he had left the Bianconeri in 2022 for Toronto FC, returning to Italy from Canada last summer.

Videos circulating on X social media show the Italian winger going under the Bianconeri’s Curva at the Dall’Ara to thank the Juventus fans for their chants. ............

“One of us,” the Bianconeri ultras sang while Bernardeschi thanked them and collected some Bianconeri scarves thrown from the stands. ............

Bernardeschi spent five seasons at Juventus, scoring 12 goals in 183 games. ............

Former Juventus winger Massimo Mauro insists the Bianconeri still lack a centre-forward and won’t be favourites when Roma visit them in Turin next week. ............

“They certainly won’t be the favourites, but we’ll see what happens on the pitch,” the ex-winger said.

“That’s the real issue, not cryptocurrencies. I was at the stadium for Juventus-Pafos, and it highlighted the squad’s issue with depth. Not only defensive absences, but also difficulty in finding a replacement for Yildiz, Conceiçao, McKennie and Locatelli. Thank goodness, David scored; otherwise, he would have had to flee Turin. It had been such a hard game for him.” ............

“I wouldn’t know where to turn because they didn’t sell good players. I wouldn’t have signed Openda for that kind of money,” he said.

“I would have said there were no players worthy of Juventus. There’s also a lack of important Italian players, something Juve have always had. Without them, you can’t rebuild because Juventus have always had an Italian dressing room leader.” ............

“They need a Napoli-style Osimhen, a driving force who could carry the attack on his own and whom Luciano Spalletti turned into a true leader. Juve are full of solid, above-average players, but they need someone who makes a difference,” he said.

“I would invest in attack where the situation is incredible. If Yildiz plays badly, it’s a tragedy. If he plays well, there’s a chance to create something dangerous, but Yildiz is not a 20-goal striker, unless he becomes Del Piero or plays as a central forward or support striker. Out wide, at best, he can become like Kvaratskhelia.” ............

“Spalletti is the best, along with Conte and Gasperini. An elite coach,” concluded the former winger.

“He can’t be the problem. He has to build the team of the future while hoping to finish in the top four, but he doesn’t have a magic wand.” ............

Who will replace Koopmeiners in Juventus vs Roma clash: Two options surface

Juventus, Bremer e Rugani di nuovo in gruppo in vista del Pafos - Gianluca Di Marzio

After picking up his fifth yellow card in Serie A this season, Juventus star Teun Koopmeiners will skip the contest against Roma.

After collecting a vital away win over Bologna on Sunday, the Bianconeri will host another direct rival for a Champions League spot on Saturday. ............

Since he was appointed Juventus manager, Spalletti has always relied on Koopmeiners as a starter, albeit in an unnatural role at the back.

The 66-year-old attributed this decision to the lack of options at the back, with several players out with injuries. ............

However, the Dutchman won’t be available next weekend after receiving a booking for bringing down Riccardo Orsolini with a rough challenge. ............

The Juventus boss will most likely switch Lloyd Kelly to the left side of the three-man backline, with Pierre Kalulu maintaining his spot on the right.

But who will occupy the central role?

Spalletti will choose between two options, and his decision will largely hinge on Gleison Bremer’s condition. ............

After almost three months on the sidelines, the Brazilian made his return from an injury against Bologna, replacing Koopmeiners in the last 15 minutes of the contest, in what may have been a dress rehearsal on the manager’s part.

Nevertheless, the source believes Bremer might not be fit enough for a starting role in six days. Therefore, Daniele Rugani is considered the favourite to start against Roma. ............

How Juventus surprised Capello over the weekend

Italiano confident : 'A 1-0 defeat to Juventus does not diminish Bologna'

Juventus travelled to face Bologna at the weekend in what was considered one of their toughest fixtures as they continue to rebuild confidence under Luciano Spalletti. The match represented a significant test for a side that has shown gradual improvement in recent weeks. While Juve are clearly making progress under their current gaffer, there remains an understanding that confidence is still developing, even as the men in black and white demonstrate their ability to compete this term. ............

The encounter with Bologna was widely viewed as a demanding challenge, given the context of Juventus’s recovery and the importance of maintaining momentum. The Bianconeri responded positively, showing organisation, discipline and resilience throughout the contest. Their efforts were rewarded by a solitary goal from Juan Cabal, which proved decisive and secured an important victory.

Performances of this nature have encouraged the belief that Juventus could return to top shape sooner rather than later. ............

Among those watching closely was Fabio Capello, who observed the match and later shared his impressions. He reflected on the broader title picture, saying, “Will it be the most open Scudetto race ever? It’s too early to say, but everything suggests the championship will be full of twists and turns from now until the end. Anything can happen.”

Capello also focused specifically on Juventus’s display, adding, “On the day just ended, for me, the Bianconeri were the real surprise: for the first time in the last two years, I saw a real team. Watch out…” ............

“Will tell a lot” Giletti wants to see how Juventus builds on beating Bologna

Bologna - Juve, Spalletti: “È la vittoria più bella e importante"

Juventus’ victory against Bologna has been described by some observers as their best performance of the season so far, and that assessment may be justified. The Bianconeri boast some of the finest players in Italy, yet they have struggled for long periods of the campaign to deliver consistently strong displays. This lack of cohesion and reliability has undermined their progress and contributed to ongoing frustration around the club.

Those difficulties ultimately led to a change in leadership, with Igor Tudor losing his job as results and performances failed to meet expectations. Luciano Spalletti has since arrived with the clear task of stabilising the team and restoring a winning mentality. ............

Performances such as the one against Bologna suggest there may be signs of improvement, but maintaining that level remains the real challenge.

At the Allianz Stadium, expectations are always high, and incremental development is rarely enough. The men in black and white must show that they are steadily getting better, particularly as the fixtures grow more demanding. Every match now carries added significance as the team attempts to re-establish itself among the elite. ............

Juventus’ next match against AS Roma is expected to be even tougher than the Bologna encounter. The importance of that fixture has been highlighted by Massimo Giletti, who spoke about what a positive result could represent. He said, “Consistency is also needed. If you don’t have that, you won’t be among the top teams. The match against Roma will tell a lot. The match against Roma will be the decisive match. For the first time since Allegri left, he has a coach who has achieved important results”.

“They don’t have a striker.” Christian Panucci discusses Juventus attacking struggles

Lois Openda in action for Juventus

Juventus continues to show signs of overall improvement as a team under the guidance of Luciano Spalletti, who has quickly established himself as one of the most effective managers the club has appointed in recent times. His arrival brought a level of experience and authority that Juventus required, and his impact is becoming increasingly visible across the squad. The team appears more organised, disciplined and confident in its approach, suggesting that Spalletti is laying solid foundations for long-term progress. ............

Spalletti has built a strong reputation over the last few years as one of the leading managers in world football, and his methods are now beginning to translate into tangible improvements at Juventus. Several areas of the team have benefited from his work, particularly in terms of structure and cohesion during matches. Players appear more comfortable in their roles, and the team is better at maintaining balance during key phases of play. The recent win against Bologna highlighted these improvements, as Juventus looked closer to returning to its best form. There is a sense that the team is moving in the right direction, even if the journey is not yet complete. ............

Despite these positive developments, Juventus continues to struggle in attack. The club invested heavily during the last transfer window by adding Jonathan David and Lois Openda to a squad that already included Dusan Vlahovic, Kenan Yildiz and other attacking options. However, the attacking unit has yet to function smoothly. ............

These issues were highlighted by Christian Panucci, who shared his assessment. He said, “Very good, they were a team for the first time, but the problem is that when the ball reaches the final 20 meters, they don’t have a striker. Openda did a little more, but it’s a dark night up front and you don’t have anyone who can put it in. Then this time they faced a tired Bologna and it went well.”

Former referee Andrea De Marco analysed the controversial Serie A decisions made during Parma-Lazio, Bologna-Juventus, Udinese-Napoli and Torino-Cremonese.

He was representing the Italian Referees’ Association (AIA) in the weekly DAZN Italia programme Open VAR, where the footage and audio from conversations between the officials are analysed. ............

Not for the first time, the official line was different to the one presented by the television pundits. ............

Some other decisions this weekend did not meet with the approval of the AIA. ............

However, De Marco sided with the officials on two other contentious Serie A Week 15 situations. ............

“When Lucumi had a hand on David’s back in Bologna-Juventus, the intensity was not enough to warrant a penalty, so the correct decision was made. We raised the bar for giving penalties for a push and this falls well below it.”

De Marco said nothing about the non-sportive action of Lucumi on Conceicao.

Always the same old story.

Alessio Tacchinardi thinks Spalletti has not only been working on tactics

DESERVED & CONVINCING WIN BUT WE MISS 1 TO MAKE 100 | BOLOGNA 0-1 JUVENTUS

Juventus is showing clear signs of improvement over the last few matches played under Luciano Spalletti, with the manager visibly working hard to raise the team to higher standards. The recent performances suggest a positive shift in direction, as Spalletti focuses on restoring confidence and consistency within the squad. His experience appears to be playing a key role in helping the team regain stability after a difficult period. ............

Spalletti has placed significant emphasis on ensuring the squad is in excellent physical condition while also addressing the challenges that come with rebuilding confidence. He is fully aware that the task ahead is demanding, particularly given the setbacks Juventus experienced under their previous two managers. A lack of experience at that time led to decisions that pushed the team backwards, leaving Spalletti with the responsibility of reversing that trend. The current squad contains players capable of delivering more than what has been shown so far, and the manager clearly recognises this potential. By drawing on his extensive experience, he is encouraging players to perform at higher levels, and early signs indicate that this approach is beginning to yield results. Juventus now looks more cohesive and competitive, suggesting that the foundations for further progress are being laid. ............

The recent victory against Bologna served as further evidence that Juventus is moving in the right direction. ............

This view was shared by Alessio Tacchinardi, who offered his assessment. He said, “This week, in my opinion, Spalletti has not only focused on tactics, but also on mentality to prepare for this match on a very difficult pitch. We saw a determined Juve, and the immediate test will be Saturday’s match against Roma, because they need to show they’ve changed. It was a do-or-die game; it would have been a media disaster if they didn’t do well.”

“Nothing is impossible” Del Piero sends a message to Juventus team

Juventus' New Era Begins with Newcastle's Big Loss of Peter Silverstone

Alessandro Del Piero was one of the defining figures for Juventus from the 1990s through to the 2010s, enjoying a long and highly successful career with the club. His influence extended beyond goals and performances, as he became a symbol of identity and continuity during some of the most dominant periods in the club’s history. ............

Despite his departure, Del Piero has remained closely connected to Juventus in the eyes of supporters. Many fans continue to advocate for his return in an administrative or leadership role, believing that his presence could help restore a stronger sense of identity within the club. The current squad is often viewed as lacking heroes, and there is a growing belief that learning from former players and historic teams could inspire greater resilience and belief.

During Del Piero’s playing days, Juventus were a dominant force in Italian football. The standards set during that era remain a reference point for supporters and former players alike, particularly when discussing mentality and collective responsibility in difficult moments. ............

Reflecting on those values, Del Piero recently recalled a match that exemplified Juventus’ spirit, even when key players were absent. He referenced a famous victory away at Borussia Dortmund in 1995, achieved despite significant challenges. He said, “In that match, we were missing Vialli and Ravanelli, who were our starting attack. We were playing on a major stage—me, Padovano, and Di Livio, who had made around fifty appearances for Juve between us—and we managed to win against a great team. It proves that nothing is impossible.” ............

Spalletti to unleash new Juventus formation vs Roma: McKennie & Bremer the catalysts

Juventus, non si salva nessuno: Bremer e McKennie ai saluti?

Juventus will reportedly adopt a new formation when they host Roma at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday evening.

Since his appointment as head coach in late October, Luciano Spalletti has maintained the 3-4-2-1 system implemented by his predecessor, Igor Tudor. ............

Spalletti will opt for a hybrid formation varying between a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1, similar to the system adopted in the second half against Pafos.

The Turin-based newspaper also anticipated Gleison Bremer’s return to the starting lineup following his cameo against Bologna.

The Brazilian should link up with Lloyd Kelly at the heart of the backline, with Pierre Kalulu and Andrea Cambiaso occupying the full-back slots.

Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram should keep their places in the middle of the park, while Weston McKennie will have a key role to play.

The ultra-versatile Texan could alternate between a box-to-box role in a three-man midfield and an attacking midfielder operating between Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao, and behind the striker (either Jonathan David or Lois Openda). ............

Throughout his managerial career, Spalletti developped a habit for playing a hybrid midfielder in an advanced role.

During his time at Roma, he converted Simone Perrotta, originally a box-to-box midfielder, into an attacking midfielder who worked off the space created by Francesco Totti and Co.

Radja Nainggolan also interpreted a similar role during the 66-year-old’s second tenure in the capital and then his time at Inter. Davide Frattesi was entrusted with this mission in the Italian national team. ............

Di Canio urges Juventus to enhance two roles, proposes Wolves star

FC Groningen legt Noorse spits Strand Larsen vast | Transfermarkt

Retired Italian striker Paolo Di Canio identifies the two playing positions that Juventus must urgently address, while offering a possible solution. ............

“The responses today are positive, especially on a mental level: attitude, mentality, aptitude. The team is more organised and more balanced,” said the former Juventus, Lazio and West Ham striker during his appearance.

“We still lack the finishing quality to compete for first place, but ambition can grow. Spalletti knows how to pass on values.

“At times he’s tough, even brusque, but he immediately understands the players’ dynamics — not only technical and physical, but also moral. That’s essential if you want to fight for at least a top-four finish.” ............

“I still wouldn’t put Juve first right now. Without a prolific striker and without a midfield of real quality in the build-up, it’s difficult.

“That said, they’re improving the defensive phase, attacking spaces and overall balance. Against Bologna, the tactical plan worked very well, beyond the 1–0 scoreline.

“Inter are ahead of everyone at the moment. Napoli, with Conte, remain strong. Milan, Juve and Roma will battle it for the Champions League spots.” ............

“I appreciated the Agnelli family’s stance: their pride was evident. It gives us hope. However, the growth process has taken too long.

“Now, they have found a serious, disciplined manager like Spalletti, someone who instils values. They have to trust him. I would renew his contract. It would bring stability and a strong message to the dressing room.” ............

” Juve need a physical player up front, someone who can play a key role. You can’t rely on midfielders alone.

“From England, I suggest Jørgen Strand Larsen from Wolverhampton. He’s physical, hungry, and a team player. He’s not a phenomenon, but he makes the others perform better. I’d go for him for €40-45 million.” ............

Former Juventus and Roma coach Fabio Capello feels that Kenan Yildiz, Francisco Conceiçao, Wesley and Mile Svilar can make a difference in the upcoming Serie A meeting between Bianconeri and Giallorossi.

Juventus and Roma meet on Saturday at the Allianz Stadium in Turin in the big match of Serie A round 16.

The Bianconeri sit fifth in the Serie A table, four points below the Giallorossi. ............

“It means more for Juventus, at least in terms of the standings. But it’s also a big test for Roma,” the former Italian coach said.

“Winning at the Allianz Stadium would give even more momentum to Gasperini’s team after the fine victory against Fabregas’ Como. The scoreline on Monday could have been wider.

“If both teams play at a high tempo, as I expect after what they showed in the last round, then duels and fine margins will matter even more. Yildiz’s bursts and Conceiçao’s dribbling can shift the balance.” ............

“For now, it is a league without a dominant team. If, after Bologna, they beat Roma as well, why should they not think bigger about getting back in the Scudetto race? Especially because Juventus are training these days, while their rivals are travelling and playing in the Supercoppa in Saudi Arabia, it’s no small difference.” ............

Preview: Juventus vs Roma - prediction, team news, lineups

Juventus vs AS Roma Prediction & Betting Tips | 20/12/2025 | FootballPredictions.com

Two teams vying for a top-four finish will clash on Saturday evening, as Serie A rivals Juventus and Roma meet in Turin.

While most of their direct competitors are away in Saudi Arabia, contesting this season's Supercoppa Italiana, the pair must try to make up lost ground.

Match preview

Backing up a morale-boosting victory in Europe, Juventus came out on top in their last league fixture, inflicting a rare defeat on Bologna at Stadio Dall'Ara.

Four days after beating Pafos in the Champions League - where recent back-to-back wins have revived dreams of reaching the knockout stage - Juve impressively conquered a top-four rival.

Second-half substitute Juan Cabal was the Bianconeri's surprise match-winner, heading home the only goal of a close-fought contest within minutes of leaving the bench.

Having posted two wins from their last three league matches - as many as across the previous nine - Juventus seem to be recovering from a rocky start, now sitting fifth in the Serie A standings.

With new boss Luciano Spalletti beginning to make an impact, Italy's most successful club will aim to extend their unbeaten streak in top-flight home matches to 12 this weekend.

Set to face one of his former teams, two weeks on from losing to another old flame in Naples, Spalletti can also reflect on Juve's dominant home record against Roma.

Not only have the Bianconeri won 11 of the last 14 league meetings in Turin, they have kept no fewer than 10 clean sheets during that period. ............

Team News

Juventus are still enduring a defensive crisis, with Federico Gatti ruled out by injury and his fellow centre-backs Daniele Rugani and Bremer just returning from layoffs.

Sorely missed in recent months, the latter could be pitched in from the start on Saturday evening, as makeshift defender Teun Koopmeiners must serve a suspension.

Once again, chief creator Kenan Yildiz - who set up Cabal's winner last week - is set to support a lone striker. With Dusan Vlahovic sidelined, either Lois Openda or Jonathan David will take up the mantle.

Canada star David recently scored in the Champions League, but he is enduring his longest goalless run in league football since moving to Europe (13 games). ............

Juventus possible starting lineup:

Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly; McKennie, Locatelli, Thuram, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; David

Roma possible starting lineup:

Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Hermoso; Wesley, Kone, Cristante, Rensch; Soule, Pellegrini; Ferguson

We say: Juventus 1-0 Roma

As neither side finds the net freely, one goal could be enough to take three points from a closely contested encounter.

Roma may have raised expectations, but losing to the likes of Napoli, Milan and Inter without scoring suggests they will come up short against Juve, who can inch a little closer to the top four.

Selection dilemma for Spalletti as two Juventus forwards vying for starting role against Roma

bologna-fc-1909-v-juventus-fc-serie-a-11.jpg

Juventus boss Luciano Spalletti will have to choose between Jonathan David and Lois Openda for Saturday’s big showdown against Roma.

With Dusan Vlahovic out of action until the spring due to a high-grade tear, the Canadian and Belgian attackers have been competing for a starting berth. ............

Spalletti has been fielding David in his starting XI in the most recent contests. But while he managed to score in the last two Champions League contests against Bodo/Glimt and Pafos, his Serie A goal drought dates back to the opening day of the season. ............

Spalletti is torn between confirming David in the starting lineup or rewarding Openda for his cameo at the Dall’Ara by handing him a starting spot against Roma. ............

The manager might have an even bigger dilemma, as some reports claim he’s tempted to unleash a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation this weekend, while other sources expect him to delay the change and stick to Igor Tudor’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Nevertheless, in either case, Spalletti is expected to field Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao behind a solitary striker, so it remains to be seen if it will be David or Openda. ............

Could Milik earn a call-up for Juventus vs Roma showdown?

Arkadiusz Milik in action for Juventus

Juventus striker Arkadiusz Milik has reappeared on the scene following an injury ordeal that lasted 18 months.

The Pole suffered a knee injury in June 2024 during an international friendly ahead of the European Championship. ............

As reported earlier this week, Milik has made his return to group training, albeit he’s still partially working on a personalised program, sparking rumours of a potential call-up for Saturday’s big clash against Roma.

But the former Ajax and Napoli star is unlikely to be in the matchday squad this weekend.

While the player has been clinically cleared, his athletic condition remains far from perfect after more than 550 days on the sidelines. ............

Milik’s return would offer Juventus a timely boost, given that Dusan Vlahovic is expected to remain on the outs until the spring after suffering a high-grade tear during the contest against Cagliari in late November.

Luciano Spalletti is currently relying on Jonathan David in the striker role, but the Canadian has only scored three goals since the start of the season, one on his club debut against Parma in August, and two in the last two Champions League fixtures against Bodo/Glimt and Pafos.

Lois Openda represents the solitary back-up at the moment, but Spalletti considers the versatile Belgian only useful in the centre-forward role when the team is relying on counterattacks. ............

“Entertain us” Capello discusses his expectations when Juventus faces Roma

Quote e pronostico di Juventus-Roma e Supercoppa italiana | Transfermarkt

Juventus take on AS Roma in their next league fixture, a contest that promises to be one of the standout matches in European football this weekend. The encounter brings together two sides capable of producing high-quality performances and will offer a clear indication of where both teams currently stand in terms of consistency and ambition. ............

The meeting with Roma will demand a significant step up in performance, given the quality of the opposition. Roma arrive as a side capable of matching Juventus in intensity and attacking threat, which should force both teams to operate at their highest level. If each side commits fully to attacking football, the match has the potential to produce plenty of goals and sustained entertainment. ............

Former manager Fabio Capello has shared his thoughts ahead of the fixture, highlighting the importance of consistency for both clubs. He said, “Both Juventus in Bologna and Roma against Como impressed me with their intensity, pace, pressing, and counterattacks. Were they flashes of brilliance, or is this normal? The match in Turin will help us understand: it will be a test of consistency for both teams, and it comes at the right time, in a week without European commitments.” ............

Gian Piero Gasperini confirms he picked Roma over Juventus last summer as the Giallorossi offered a ‘more difficult’ challenge, but facing the Bianconeri is ‘always’ tough ‘because they have top-level players.’

Gasperini held a press conference on Friday on the eve of a Serie A match against Juventus at the Allianz Stadium in Turin. ............

Gasperini has now explained why he chose the Giallorossi over the Bianconeri.

“Because it was more difficult. I’m happy with how it went,” Gasperini said.

“Now we face this important match. Juve remain a great team, certainly strong and always able to reinforce themselves. Winning is always in their DNA; we come to this match after a good performance against Como and in Glasgow, and we want to test ourselves against this team.

“I think we’ve been good: 15 matches is a good streak to give some indications. I don’t know if we are among the best, but the boys have been excellent in almost all games, even when we didn’t manage to win,” Gasperini continued.

“It’s important for them to try to catch up and for us to maintain or increase our advantage. It’s December 19, concentration is at its peak, and it’s very exciting to play this match with this ranking. The rest can wait, this is not the time.” ............

“Spalletti is certainly friendly. When he was at Inter, we happened to have dinner together and we often spoke when he was with the national team,” Gasp revealed.

“Now we talk less, but we will greet each other cordially. It’s not easy to be appointed mid-season, but he’s trying to bring his ideas. Facing them is always difficult because they have top-level players.

“The rivalry with Juventus is felt in all cities. I was at the club as a youth coach, and always finding motivated opponents toughened the team,” concluded the Roma coach.

“Instead of being a disadvantage, it becomes an advantage. Juve have always been a benchmark in my career. ............

Luciano Spalletti has shut down rumours that Jonathan David has become an isolated figure in the Juventus dressing room and that he was not invited to the team’s Christmas dinner by joking that the Canadian committed an Italian sin when he first moved to Turin: ‘He grated parmesan on seafood pasta, they didn’t invite him again’. ............

David had not been invited to several informal team dinners, and there have been some suggestions elsewhere that he was not invited to the squad’s annual Christmas do.

Several members of the Juventus squad have tried to shut these rumours down. Federico Gatti wrote on his Instagram story: “I want to take two minutes to clarify this situation. I find it inconceivable that such unfounded news, built out of nothing, on the eve of such an important game, have been allowed to circulate.

“Even more surprising is seeing how many people believe this news hat doesn’t even have the slightest element of truth. The only thing that matters now is the game. The rest is just noise.” ............

Spalletti joked that David had not been invited to team meals because he committed an Italian cardinal sin after he first moved to Italy.

“They made the right call not inviting him,” Spalletti joked. “The first time they took him out to dinner, he grated parmesan on seafood pasta and they didn’t invite him again.”

Juventus vs AS Roma: Preview and Prediction

Juventus vs Roma: Prediction, Preview, lineups, tips and odds on December 20, 2025 – Ratingbet.com

Saturday evening in Turin will see a critical clash between two Serie A giants, Juventus and AS Roma, both vying for a place in the top four. While much of the competition is focused on the Supercoppa Italiana in Saudi Arabia, these two sides will look to make up ground and boost their own ambitions for European football next season.

Juventus come into this match with growing confidence after back-to-back wins in both the Champions League and Serie A. In their most recent league outing, they pulled off an impressive 1-0 win over Bologna at Stadio Dall’Ara, with second-half substitute Juan Cabal heading home the only goal of the match. This victory, combined with their 2-0 win over Pafos in Europe, has revitalised their hopes of progressing in the Champions League while keeping pace in Serie A.

Under Luciano Spalletti, Juventus seem to be hitting their stride, having won two of their last three league games after a rough patch earlier in the season. Sitting fifth in the table, they will look to extend their unbeaten run in home league matches to 12 as they host AS Roma.

Historically, Juventus have dominated at home against Roma, winning 11 of the last 14 encounters in Turin and keeping 10 clean sheets during that period. The Giallorossi, on the other hand, are enjoying a solid season but have struggled to find consistency in recent weeks. After topping the table in late November, they hit a rough patch with two consecutive league losses, both without scoring a goal. ............

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

Juventus continue to face significant defensive challenges heading into Saturday’s clash. Federico Gatti remains sidelined due to injury, while fellow centre-backs Daniele Rugani and Bremer are only just returning from layoffs.

Bremer, sorely missed in recent months, could be called upon to start in this match, providing a welcome boost to a defence that has been relying on makeshift options. Teun Koopmeiners, who has been filling in at centre-back, is unavailable for selection due to a suspension, further complicating Juventus’s defensive setup.

In attack, Juventus also face a shortage of options, with Dusan Vlahovic still out with injury. This leaves either Lois Openda or Jonathan David to lead the line, with David having recently ended a goal drought in the Champions League.

However, he is enduring his longest goalless streak in league football since moving to Europe, having not scored in 13 consecutive Serie A games. Kenan Yildiz, who provided the assist for Juan Cabal’s match-winning goal last week, will again support the lone striker as Juventus look for a spark in the final third.

Tactically, Juventus are likely to adopt a 3-4-2-1 formation to bolster their defensive resilience while maintaining fluidity in attack. Michele Di Gregorio should start in goal, with a back three comprising Pierre Kalulu, Gleison Bremer, and Lloyd Kelly.

The midfield will feature Weston McKennie and Manuel Locatelli as central midfielders, while Khephren Thuram and Andrea Cambiaso will occupy the wing-back roles, providing width and covering both defensive and offensive duties. Finally, Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao  will operate as the creators alongside the striker, with Jonathan David leading the attack.

Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly; McKennie, Locatelli, Thuram, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; David

Juventus vs AS Roma: Preview and Prediction.

AS Roma

 ............

Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Hermoso; Wesley, Kone, Cristante, Rensch; Soule, Pellegrini; Ferguson

Juventus vs AS Roma: Preview and Prediction. Juventus vs AS Roma: Preview and Prediction.

Key Stats

  • Juventus have won 11 of their last 14 Serie A meetings against AS Roma at home, keeping ten clean sheets during that period.
  • AS Roma have won 12 of their last 17 away matches in Serie A, showing strong form on the road, although they have struggled in recent encounters with top-tier teams.
  • Paulo Dybala has scored just once in Serie A this season, marking his worst start to a top-flight campaign since moving to Europe.
  • Juventus have conceded just one goal in their last three Serie A matches.
  • AS Roma have scored just 16 goals in Serie A this season, the fewest among teams in the top half of the table.

Player to Watch

Jonathan David

Jonathan David is poised to be a key figure for AS Roma in this crucial fixture against Juventus. The Canadian striker has been enduring a lean spell in Serie A, with his longest goalless run since moving to Europe stretching to 13 matches. However, his experience in European competitions, coupled with his ability to break down defensive lines, makes him a potent threat when Roma need a spark.

David’s movement off the ball, ability to link up with attacking midfielders like Lorenzo Pellegrini, and clinical finishing in the box are all elements that Roma will rely on to break Juventus’ resilient defence. ............

Prediction

Juventus 2-1 AS Roma

Juventus’s solid home record and recent defensive improvements give them the edge in this encounter. While AS Roma will put up a strong fight, particularly with the attacking potential of David, the home side’s depth and attacking options should ultimately prevail.

A closely contested match is expected, but Juventus’ ability to control key moments and capitalise on Roma’s attacking struggles will see them edge a narrow victory. The Hard Tackle predicts a 2-1 win for Luciano Spalletti and his charges.
