Stramaccioni berates Juventus attacker: “The fans don’t like his attitude”

Jonathan David kept quiet by Serie A challengers Napoli in Juventus loss - Canadian Soccer Daily

Former Inter coach Andrea Stramaccioni blasts Juventus striker Jonathan David after another listless display in the 1-2 defeat to Napoli. ............

David was relegated to the bench following Luciano Spalletti’s appointment. However, Dusan Vlahovic will be out until the spring after suffering a serious injury, which gave the Brooklyn native a new lifeline.

And yet, Canada’s all-time goalscorer was dropped from the starting lineup against Napoli.

Spalletti preferred to entrust Kenan Yildiz with the false 9 role, before changing his mind at the interval following a miserable 45 minutes. ............

For his part, Stramaccioni believes that the former LOSC Lille star has an attitude issue, arguing that he didn’t show the required desire and tenacity.

“Spalletti had put an out-of-contract player like Vlahovic at the centre of the project. And when he’s missing, he leaves David out,” said the former Inter and Udinese manager in his post-match appearance.

“When the Canadian entered the pitch, we see that he’s not willing to ‘eat grass,’ but has the wrong attitude that Juventus fans don’t like.

“At this point, I think there’s no chemistry in the dressing room between Spalletti and the Juventus forwards.”

Safe to say that Luciano Spalletti was delighted with Jonathan David’s performance in Juventus’ 2-0 win over Pafos as the Juventus coach hugged and kissed the Canadian after replacing him in the second half.

David scored his third goal for Juventus on Wednesday night, contributing to a 2-0 win against Pafos in the Champions League. ............

David finalised a counter-attack at minute 73 and was replaced a few seconds later, but this time Spalletti showed all his gratitude towards the Canadian.

Spalletti, in fact, hugged and kissed David as soon as the striker left the pitch, making room for Vasilije Adzic. ............

Jonathan David’s struggle extends off the field

Juventus made to battle before earning much needed win over Pafos | Reuters

Jonathan David has found it difficult to establish himself at Juventus since joining the club in the summer as a free agent. His struggles in front of goal have surprised many who believed that Juventus were acquiring a top-level forward with the ability to make an immediate impact. ............

The club had been confident that David would be an effective replacement for Dv9 and viewed him as one of the finest attacking talents available. Expectations were high that he would shine immediately upon his arrival in Turin. However, that has not been the case. Instead, David has struggled to secure regular game time, forcing Juventus to turn again to Vlahovic as their main source of goals.

Despite his difficulties, David remains an important member of the squad, yet the club clearly require more from him as the season progresses. ............

While his performances on the pitch have been underwhelming, his challenges appear to extend beyond matchdays. David has also encountered problems off the pitch and has been isolating himself from his teammates. This situation is reported to stem partly from the language barrier within the dressing room and partly from his naturally shy personality.

These off-field issues may be contributing to his difficulties in adapting to life in Turin and to the expectations placed upon him. ............

Juventus forward Jonathan David has been officially crowned the Canada Soccer Men’s Player of the Year winner for 2025, his second consecutive and third overall victory. ............

“I’m proud to have been chosen as Canada Soccer’s Men’s Player of the Year for a third time. I’m grateful to my teammates, the coaching staff, and everyone who continues to support our program,” David said.

“As we approach a historic period for Canadian soccer with the World Cup coming to our country in 2026, it’s an exciting time, and I’m proud to be part of a group that’s focused on continuing to raise the standard.” ............

“To get an understanding of his commitment and desire to play for Canada, look no further than this summer’s Gold Cup. He put on our jersey when he didn’t even have a professional contract nailed down. He understands completely what it means to be Canadian and fight for the badge. I’m excited for an even better 2026 for Jonny and our team.” ............

Jonathan David needs as much time as Juventus has given Dusan Vlahovic

bologna-fc-1909-v-juventus-fc-serie-a-13.jpg

Jonathan David is already being labelled a Juventus flop, with some reports suggesting that the club could consider selling him as early as January. Such claims underline how quickly the narrative around the forward has shifted since his arrival, despite the relatively short time he has spent in Turin. ............

There have also been reports of an incident in which teammates did not invite David out for dinner, a detail that has further fuelled speculation that his time at Juventus may be shorter than initially expected. Juventus signed him as one of the finest strikers in France, and he arrived with the expectation that he would provide goals and immediately strengthen the attack. However, that impact has not yet materialised, leading to increasing scrutiny from fans and commentators.

The club soon realised that David would require time to adapt to the demands of Serie A. As a result, he found himself spending more time on the bench, while Juventus once again relied heavily on Dusan Vlahovic. This situation was not what the club had envisioned, particularly as Vlahovic was widely expected to leave in the summer, with David seen as a potential replacement. Juventus are now reportedly relieved that Vlahovic did not attract a suitable suitor, given David’s slow start. ............

Despite the criticism, it is far too early to give up on David. It is disappointing that some supporters appear to have forgotten how long it took Vlahovic himself to prove that he could be relied upon. Even now, Vlahovic has not consistently reached the same heights he achieved at Fiorentina, which originally persuaded Juventus to sign him. Nevertheless, the club showed patience and never abandoned him during difficult periods. ............

Condó slams ‘sloppy’ Juventus man: “You’re not a phenomenon”

Juventus players looking dejected after Lecce draw

Italian journalist Paolo Condó roasted Juventus striker Jonathan David, who failed to convert from the spot against Lecce.

The Canadian was relegated to the bench in favour of Lois Openda in recent weeks, but Luciano Spalletti decided to give him a starting berth on Saturday. ............

After the break, a lovely team action from Juventus culminated with Weston McKennie’s equaliser. However, the home side failed to find a winner, even when the referee awarded them a spot-kick.

David, who won the penalty, decided to take it himself, with Kenan Yildiz’s blessing. However, the former LOSC Lille star sent a weak effort straight to the middle without the customary chip. Hence, the ball was easily blocked by Wladimiro Falcone’s trailing leg.

Canada’s all-time goal-scorer tried to make amends later on, but the Lecce goalkeeper thwarted him once more. ............

“David was too sloppy on the penalty … as if he were a phenomenon, going to score a goal like a phenomenon,” said the veteran journalist in his post-match appearance.

“I think the message we need to send to David right now is this: ‘we don’t think you’re a phenomenon; up to now, based on what you’ve shown, you’ve been a fairly modest centre-forward’.

“When you’re given the opportunity to show your qualities, you have to put in 200% — mentally and technically.

“On the technical side, I hope he knows how to take penalties better than that, but from a mental point of view… You simply cannot step up to take a penalty like that.” ............

Jonathan David is happier that Juventus won than his goal

David-celebrating-v-Sassuolo.jpg

Jonathan David delivered an impressive performance as Juventus beat Sassuolo last night, a result that will have felt particularly satisfying following his missed penalty against Lecce. The striker appeared confident and composed, showing signs that he is settling into his role within the squad at a crucial point in the season.

The Canadian forward is beginning to build momentum after enjoying a sustained run of form under Luciano Spalletti. ............

At the beginning of the season, David found opportunities limited. When he did feature, the team struggled to perform at its usual level, and his own contributions in front of goal were limited. Adjusting to life in Italy proved challenging, and these early difficulties led Juventus to continue relying heavily on Vlahovic, the player David had effectively been signed to replace. ............

In recent weeks, David has repaid the faith shown in him by his manager with increasingly assured performances. His movement, link-up play, and growing composure have added a different dimension to Juventus’ attack. Against Sassuolo, his contribution was not only measured in goals but also in his overall influence on the match.

Speaking after the game, David underlined his priorities by saying, “Yes, everything’s fine. I had to score that goal. I’m happy, but the important thing is that we got back to winning ways straight away.” ............

Canada coach Marsch: David ‘the best I’ve worked with after Haaland, now he won’t stop’

SASSUOLO, ITALY - JANUARY 06: Jonathan David of Juventus celebrates scoring his team's third goal during the Serie A match between US Sassuolo Calcio and Juventus FC at Mapei Stadium Citta del Tricolore on January 06, 2026 in Sassuolo, Italy. (Photo by Alessandro Sabattini/Getty Images)

Canada coach Jesse Marsch predicts that Jonathan David ‘won’t stop’ scoring goals for Juventus: ‘After Erling Haaland, he’s the best striker I’ve worked with.’

Canada coach Marsch believes Juventus striker David will start scoring consistently after ending a 135-day Serie A goal drought on Tuesday in a 3-0 win over Sassuolo.

“I know Jonathan well, and I wasn’t worried after he missed the penalty against Lecce. It happens to everyone,” Marsch said.

“I had seen him live in Pisa. We often speak, so I was sure the goal would come soon. I wasn’t surprised either by the wonderful embrace from his teammates and Spalletti.” ............

“Juventus are a great team, and these are the attitudes of a big club. David is happy at Juventus, and even in the toughest moments, he always told me he wanted to stay in Turin,” Marsch continued. ............

“Now Jonathan won’t stop anymore, and he will score many goals. He just needed a period to settle in. I said before and I repeat it. I am David’s national team coach with Canada, but at Salzburg, I coached Haaland and Milan’s Nkunku at Leipzig.

“After Erling, who is a monster, David is the best striker I’ve worked with. He has always scored and will do so even in a league with less space for strikers, like Serie A. Nkunku is less of a goalscorer, but he has great quality, and I’m happy Milan are giving him confidence.” ............
