ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Bonucci: 'Juve forced defensive Atleti' Oct 1, 2014 Leonardo Bonucci said Juventus deserve credit for “forcing Atletico Madrid to sit back and wait for us.” The Bianconeri dominated possession at the Vicente Calderon with 62 per cent of the ball, but were beaten 1-0 by an Arda Turan goal. “Perhaps we lacked the final pass, as we did well until the final third, but Atletico close with all 11 men behind the ball,” Bonucci told Sport Mediaset. “We tried to spread the play and had some chances, albeit not clear ones, but were penalised on an error as we allowed them a cross that should’ve been closed down. “We know Serie A and the Champions League are two different situations. In Europe when you make a half-mistake, there are players who can take advantage. “If we look on the positive side, we dominated possession against an Atletico Madrid side that almost won the Champions League last season and forced them to sit back and wait for us.” http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166

ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Vialli: Atletico Madrid Prevented Juventus From Playing Oct 1, 2014 Gianluca Vialli has asserted that Atletico Madrid prevented Juventus from playing their natural game during the Champions League clash at the Estadio Vicente Calderón. In a battle of a match, the Bianconeri where consigned to a 1-0 defeat by a second half Arda Turan strike. “It was a very complicated game,” Vialli told Sky Sport Italia following the match. “Allegri has asked the team to play a technical game, but Atletico prevented them from doing so by any means at their disposal. “They did not allow Juve to be able to develop their play as they normally do.” The result see’s all four of Group A’s teams level on three points each after two games. http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166

ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Simeone: 'Tactically intelligent game' Oct 1, 2014 Diego Simeone explained Atletico Madrid’s “tactically intelligent game” to beat Juventus 1-0 in the Champions League. “We faced a great team,” Cholo told Sport Mediaset. “I think we played a tactically intelligent game, as Juve have strong strikers who are reference points and champions in midfield with a high three-man defence. It’s not easy to play against them. “We knew that we could hurt them with crosses and pull-backs, as it is difficult for them to close down the wings.” Juventus had 62 per cent possession, which in the opening half-hour was close to 70 per cent, but ex-Catania Coach Simeone assured it was all part of the plan. “We allowed them to press us in midfield and in the first half Juventus played better, but we were more aggressive after the break and could slowly see what was going to happen. “I think the game opened up, when we introduced Griezmann and moved to a 4-4-2 we knew it would open up the game. We happened to get the goal first.” Malmo beat Olympiacos 2-0 tonight, meaning all four teams in the group have three points. Juve are on top thanks to goal difference. “It is going to be a tough group, as it is not easy to win away from home against any of these sides. Now we have to focus on the Liga, where we feel like we’re playing in about 20 minutes!” http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166

ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Match Analysis: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Juventus Oct 1, 2014 Arda Turan's late goal handed Atletico Madrid all three points in their Champions League Group A clash with Italian champions Juventus on Wednesday evening. Both sides struggled to create opportunities in what was a close-fought encounter, but Turan's effort 15 minutes from time secured all the points for last season's finalists. Here, Sports Mole dissects the 90 minutes of action between the two European rivals. Match statistics Atletico Shots: 8 On target: 2 Possession: 38% Corners: 4 Fouls: 21 Juventus Shots: 5 On target: 0 Possession: 62% Corners: 2 Fouls: 28 Was the result fair? In truth, it was not a brilliant spectacle at the Calderon. Both sides really struggled to create openings, but credit must be given to both defences, who certainly came out on top in the battle against the attacking personnel on display. There was little to choose between the two teams in the first period, but Juventus did have more of the ball. It was a similar story in the second 45 minutes, but the longer the match went on, the more likely Atletico looked to claim all the points. There would have been few complaints if the match ended goalless, but Atletico just about shaded the contest overall. Atletico's performance It has been a mixed bag for Atletico this season, with a clutch of new signings still settling into the team and head coach Diego Simeone recently returning from a touchline suspension. Mario Mandzukic is also carrying a facial injury and struggled to get the best of the Juventus defence this evening. That said, defensively Atletico were just superb. Much of their success last season was built on a solid unit at the back and Diego Godin and Miranda were back to their very best this evening. Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez have started the season in good form for Juve, but neither got a sniff tonight. As touched upon, there was little to separate the two teams in general play and neither attack played particularly well, but Atletico started to force the issue in the final third of the contest and got their reward late on. Juventus's performance Juve entered the match sitting top of the Italian league and having not conceded a single goal this season. Like Atletico, the Serie A champions were brilliant defensively this evening, but they really struggled in the final third. In their usual 3-5-2 formation, wing-backs Patrice Evra and Stephan Lichtsteiner both failed to offer a threat in attack, while Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal were also disappointing in the middle of the park. Llorente and Tevez had some brief moments in the final third, but the attacking pair could not get the best of a brilliant Atletico defence. The away side still had time to secure an equaliser after conceding with 15 minutes remaining, but they never really offered the impression that they could level late on. They are the dominant force in Italy, but really need to improve their performances in the Champions League. Sports Mole's man of the match Miranda: In truth, this could easily have gone to Miranda's defensive partner Godin, with both centre-backs sensational for the home side this evening. Miranda just shades it, however, due to his overall performance. Llorente is one of the most difficult strikers to mark in European football due to his size and power, but Miranda never afforded the frontman any space in the Spanish capital. When needed, he was also prepared to bring the play forward from the back. It was just about a faultless defensive performance from the Brazilian. Biggest gaffe There isn't really one single moment that stands out, but Juventus's inability to push forward in the latter stages was disappointing. It wasn't as if Atletico were desperately holding onto their lead in the final moments, with Juve almost accepting the one-goal defeat. Overall, it was a poor attacking display from the Italian side. Referee performance To suggest that it was a tough match for referee Felix Brych to officiate would be the understatement of the century. The contest was littered with late challenges and clashes between both sets of players, but the German did well to calm proceedings when needed. He awarded just the one yellow card in a feisty first period, but had to get his card out seven more times in the second half. It was an untidy match in terms of free kicks and fouls, but Brych cannot really be criticised for his part in the match. What next? Atletico: The Spanish champions return to league action with a trip to Valencia on Saturday. Their next Champions League clash is against Malmo on October 22. Juventus: Juve also return to domestic action this weekend with the eagerly-anticipated clash against Roma on Sunday evening. They also return to Champions League action on October 22 with a trip to Olympiacos. http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166

ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Simeone shows reactive Allegri how to change a game The Atletico Madrid boss made a winning impact with his changes from the sidelines, while his Juventus counterpart reacted only when it was too late. Oct 1, 2014 COMMENT By Kris Voakes | International Football Correspondent Diego Simeone did it again on Wednesday. He rallied and he cajoled from the touchline. He ran the risk of being banished to the stands. He stirred up the Vicente Calderon crowd to get behind their Atletico Madrid heroes. And, it turned out, he had the winning attitude that put Juventus counterpart Massimiliano Allegri to shame. In their starting XIs, the two coaches had matched each other stride for stride for the Champions League Group A clash. But the second-half turnaround that sparked Atleti’s 1-0 win had the fingerprints of Simeone all over it. The first half gave us a fair idea of what was to follow, with two packed midfields cancelling each other out for the entire 45 minutes. With both sides looking to play with a rather narrow approach, no leeway was given for the likes of Koke, Patrice Evra or Stephan Lichtsteiner to make space out wide. It was fairly dull stuff for the neutral. Simeone’s introduction of Antoine Griezmann for Saul shortly after the interval was the first liberal move by either coach either before or during the match, and suddenly there seemed to be a slight injection of pace and flair. Juve continued to display a decent shape, but for the home side there was more hope that something might come of their endeavour. Allegri had his side hanging on for a point, but Simeone’s proactivity had resulted in more opportunities in the final third. Atleti’s goal arrived 15 minutes from the end. Stephan Lichtsteiner lost his man when tracking in to cover for Martin Caceres, and Arda Turan neatly turned home a wonderful cross from Juanfran. Allegri’s luck had run out. While the Bianconeri might have felt it a bit harsh that their hard work had been undone, they hadn’t threatened nearly enough to truly be considered as being on a par with the Spanish champions. They didn’t get a single shot on target throughout the match, and Allegri only looked to do something about that when his side had already fallen behind. It was a trait for which he was regularly found out in his days as AC Milan boss. Whereas Simeone had been quick and incisive about his first change, Allegri hadn’t. And Juventus’ first concession of a goal in over five months proved costly. "It was a very even game. In this competition, though, the small details are decisive," Juve skipper Gianluigi Buffon admitted afterwards, and he had hit the nail on the head. Both sides should still qualify from this group, with all four teams now on three points with four games to play. Juve will not panic. Only one team has got a maximum 18 points from their Champions League group since 2002, and a loss away to last year’s runners-up is hardly the end of the world. But the long-standing inability of their coach to be proactive in his alterations must be addressed if they are to be a contender come the final stages this term. http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166

ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Buffon: 'Juve must take more risks' Oct 1, 2014 Gigi Buffon warned Juventus “need to take more risks” in Europe after their 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid. Arda Turan scored the first goal Buffon has conceded all season between Serie A and the Champions League. “It was a balanced game in which we certainly were not inferior. We might not have created a huge amount, but over the whole 90 minutes a draw was more than fair,” the goalkeeper told Sport Mediaset. “Unfortunately, in football and in life, a small detail can send the result one way or another.” The Bianconeri dominated possession at the Vicente Calderon, holding the ball for 62 per cent of the game, but did not have a single shot on target. “Atletico are a team who have become a reality on the European scene whose strength is solidity and counter-attacks. Today they should’ve taken the initiative, but had a few problems doing that against us. “What we need to look at is our own house, to improve ourselves and irritate our opponents a bit more away from home.” It was a very different performance from Juve’s 3-0 victory away to Atalanta on Saturday. “Atletico Madrid are part of the elite of European football, but it is also true that if we want to make a step forward and gain our maturity in Europe then we need to take more risks away from home.” Juventus face Roma on Sunday in Serie A, fresh from an impressive 1-1 draw at Manchester City. “Roma’s performance in Manchester confirmed everything they did well last season and this. They faced a side with more talented individuals than Atletico, but who are less of a team unit, so the approach could be different.” http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166

ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Chiellini: 'Juve deserved a point' Oct 1, 2014 Giorgio Chiellini said Juventus “deserved at least a point” against Atletico Madrid and they are in a “very balanced group.” The Bianconeri were beaten 1-0 at the Vicente Calderon despite having 61 per cent possession, as Arda Turan tapped in at the 75th minute. “We played our game, we knew it would be like this and we did it well,” Chiellini told Sport Mediaset. “It’s a shame, as the game should’ve ended at least 0-0 and we wanted to make the most of any gap we found. “We leave here with regrets, as we deserved at least a point here.” Malmo beat Olympiacos 2-0, so all four teams in this Champions League group have three points. “We knew the group would be very balanced, now in three weeks we have an important trip to Athens that will say a lot about what we can do in this group.” Juve suffered their first defeat – and conceded their first goal – of the season and on Sunday face a Scudetto showdown with Roma. “Let’s leave tonight to recover from this disappointment, then from tomorrow we will think about Roma.” http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166

ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Arda Turan leaves it late as Atletico Madrid see off Juventus Oct 1, 2014 Arda Turan struck in the second half to inflict Juventus' first defeat of the season and get Atletico Madrid's Champions League Group A campaign up and running on Wednesday evening. The Turkish midfielder scored the only goal of the game in the 74th minute at the Vicente Calderon stadium to give last season's finalists all three points in the 1-0 victory. After suffering a 3-2 defeat in their opener at Olympiakos a fortnight ago, Atletico went into the encounter without injured captain Gabi and under pressure to deliver. Juve dominated possession but failed to test Atletico goalkeeper Miguel Moya throughout the match. The outcome has lifted Atletico level on three points with Juve, Malmo and Olympiakos after two games played. The visitors, heading into the game on the back of six straight wins in all competitions and having kept a clean sheet in the process, looked nervous in the early stages. Raul Garcia headed Atletico's first chance just wide after five minutes before it was Juve who threatened, Claudio Marchisio seeing his long-range effort go off target. Mario Mandzukic had the best chance to break the deadlock in the 25th minute but the Croatian's rising shot from 30 yards was kept out by Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. Shortly after, Diego Godin met a Koke free kick into the box with a header which went over the bar. The hosts finished the first half with a good chance for Saul Niguez, whose header from Koke's cross flashed wide. Simeone made his first substitution early in the second half with Antoine Griezmann replacing Niguez. Juve struggled to break Atletico's defensive line and in the 72nd minute, Carlos Tevez' goal-bound attempt was blocked by a defender. Atletico pressed forward more aggressively and were rewarded when Juanfran's cross found Turan in the box and his left-footed strike towards the far post beat Buffon. The hosts almost shot themselves in the foot four minutes later when Stephan Lichsteiner's effort from 14 yards took a deflection off Garcia and the ball just went wide of the far post, with Moya already beaten, Atletico then holding on for a vital victory. http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166

ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Atletico Madrid vs. Juventus: Score, Grades and Post-Match Reaction Oct 1, 2014 Atletico Madrid earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Juventus during Wednesday's UEFA Champions League fixture, with Arda Turan scoring the only goal of the match in the second half. The visitors took control of the ball early while Atletico were comfortable defending the box and luring on the counter, and as a result, chances were few and far between. Leonardo Bonucci was booked for using his elbow against Mario Mandzukic, as the Croatia international was closely marked by the Italians. The first real chance was for the hosts, when Turan pulled the ball back for Mandzukic, who tried a back-heel from close range. The ball was blocked by Arturo Vidal and Gianluigi Buffon, although the ball appeared to hit the Chilean on the arm, as shared by AS English's Nicholas Rigg: Nicholas Rigg @nicholasrigg Big claims for a handball from Vidal (I think) from the #Atleti fans but not given. #Juve had eased their way into in the last 10 mins or so The action was involuntary, however, and from close range, Vidal had no chance to pull his arm back. No penalty was given. Juventus continued to dominate possession, as evidenced by this tweet from the club after 30 minutes: JuventusFC ✔ @juventusfc Dopo 28', POSSESSO PALLA: 70.2% per la Signora, 29.8% per l'Atletico #AtleticoJuve #UCL Mandzukic pounced on a spill from Vidal and blasted a shot on goal from the edge of the box, but Buffon read it well and made a good save. Paul Pogba had a nice effort on goal from the edge of the box, curling his effort just wide. There was a scary moment when Turan stayed down on the pitch after a duel with Stephan Lichtsteiner with an apparent head injury. The Turk made a strong tackle on Lichtsteiner, who fell down awkwardly on top of his head. Fortunately, Turan was able to continue after receiving treatment. Atletico controlled the final minutes of the first half but couldn't find their way past Juve's defence, as the teams went into half-time scoreless. The same pattern repeated early in the second half—Juventus kept possession around Atletico's box but were clearly missing Andrea Pirlo's incisive passing, while the Spanish side displayed patience and aimed for the counter-attack. Atletico had another penalty shout when a fast cross was deflected onto Martin Caceres' arm and nearly disappeared into the goal, but Buffon reacted quickly and kicked it off his line. Caceres had no time to react to the deflection, and the penalty was once again not given. Football Italia were confused by the sequence: footballitalia @footballitalia Caceres almost scored an own goal as a fierce Arda Turan strike was deflected up off two players on to his hand! Atletico now took control of possession, and Antoine Griezmann (who was introduced at half-time) added some spark and pace to the Spanish side's attack. Turan finally broke the deadlock with 15 minutes left on the clock, the first goal Juventus conceded all season. Juanfran's cross missed Mandzukic but fell all the way to the Turk, who slotted home from close range. Juventus now upped the pace and Raul Garcia nearly put the ball in his own goal, finding the outside of the post after making contact with Lichtsteiner's cross. The Italian champions launched a toothless final offensive, and Atletico comfortably held on to win the match. Grades Gianluigi Buffon: B Andres Kudacki/Associated Press Juventus looked out of sorts and lost for ideas in possession, and their top player was undoubtedly Buffon, who continues to defy his age. The Italy No. 1 could do nothing about Turan's effort and was otherwise flawless. Koke: B+ Pulling the strings in midfield, Koke showed everyone his reputation for underperforming in the biggest matches is unfounded. A nuisance for Pogba and Claudio Marchisio throughout the match, the midfielder served as the Atleti's main creative outlet as well. Arda Turan: B+ Turan's contributions might not always be pretty, but his tireless work rate is of vital importance for his squad. Disturbing Juve's buildup play by pressing high and scoring the pivotal goal, Turan was the clear man of the match. Post-Match Reaction Giorgio Chiellini told Mediaset (h/t to Football Italia) he believed Juventus deserved at least a point: We played our game, we knew it would be like this and we did it well. It’s a shame, as the game should’ve ended at least 0-0 and we wanted to make the most of any gap we found. We leave here with regrets, as we deserved at least a point here. We knew the group would be very balanced, now in three weeks we have an important trip to Athens that will say a lot about what we can do in this group. Post-Match Outlook The hosts were desperate for a strong result after their loss to Olympiacos on Matchday 1, and a win over Juventus will do nicely. Their Champions League campaign is now back on track, and with Malmo next on the schedule, last year's finalists' chances of making the next round are looking good. The same can be said for the Bianconeri, who will receive a boost by the return of Pirlo. Losing at the Vicente Calderon is no disgrace, and the doubleheader with Olympiacos will likely decide which team joins Atletico in the knockout stages. http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166

ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Atletico Madrid 1-0 Juventus: Turan Breaks Bianconeri Hearts Oct 1, 2014 Massimiliano Allegri suffered his first defeat as Juventus coach as Atletico Madrid battled to a 1-0 victory in Wednesday’s Champions League fixture at the Estadio Vicente Calderón. Arda Turan struck midway through the second half to give Diego Simeone’s men the three points and a vital win in Group A. Juventus dominated possession early on and moved the ball around while Atletico, holding a high defensive line, continually harassed the Bianconeri and always looked to win the ball and break up field. The opening stages offered frantic play but neither side were able to achieve any penetration against well organised defences. Several key battles began developing, especially between Mario Mandzukic and Giorgio Chiellini, and Paul Pogba and Tiago. This spilled over in the 12th minute when Leonardo Bonucci collected the first booking of the game for an elbow on Mandzukic as they challenged for a high ball. Juventus, missing the injured Andrea Pirlo, continued to control possession but lacked any attacking spark and failed to create any meaningful chances. They were hindered by a disciplined Atletico defence which mobbed the Juventus strikers in numbers the moment they received the ball. After one or two half chances the Mandzukic had the game’s first shot at 24 minutes. Arturo Vidal was caught in possession by the terrier like Koke and Arda Turan, who supplied the Croat. However, his shot from range was saved with ease by Gianluigi Buffon. Juventus had their own effort ten minutes later when a high ball broke kindly for Paul Pogba, but the resulting shot sailed wide. In a very physical first half and the game was continually interrupted as both sides gave away a plethora of free kicks. However, despite the high energy of the contest, neither side was able to create any significant opportunities to score. The second half continued in the same vein with Juventus controlling possession but doing little with it. The scrappiness of the first period was also in evidence as the contest was constantly stopped for fouls, destroying any sense of flow to the game. The referees leniency was ended by Chiellini who received the games second yellow card just before the hour. Atletico Madrid saw a credible penalty claim waved away after the resulting free kick was fired low across the Juventus box and ricocheted up and off Martín Cáceres’s hand. That incident seemed to spur the Spanish team on and they began to assert themselves more on the game, putting the Juventus back line under sustained pressure. It was Atletico who finally broke the deadlock in the 74 minute. Tiago slipped the ball wide to Juanfran who delivered a perfect cross which landed at the feet of Turan, who had stepped past Stephan Lichtsteiner. The Turk’s deft touch guided the ball into the corner of the net, leaving Buffon helpless. Juventus urgently tried to get back into the game and almost forced Raúl García into scoring an own goal. Former Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata came on to a hostile reception as Juventus looked for a late equaliser but by this time Atletico had tightened up and managed to see out the result. http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166

ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) CL: Atleti get better of Juventus Oct 1, 2014 Juventus had more possession at the Vicente Calderon, but were beaten by Arda Turan’s goal for Atletico Madrid. It leaves their Champions League group perfectly poised, as Malmo beat Olympiacos 2-0, so all four teams are now on three points. The Bianconeri had won all their competitive games this season with clean sheets and visited last year’s beaten Champions League Finalists. The pressure was on Atleti to deliver after losing their opener 3-2 at Olympiacos. Gabi was injured and Antoine Griezmann dropped in favour of 19-year-old Saul, while Mario Mandzukic played with a protective mask after breaking his nose last month, although he took it off after 13 minutes. Juve missed Andrea Pirlo, Romulo and Andrea Barzagli, picking Martin Caceres rather than Angelo Ogbonna at the back. Atleti had won their last five meetings with Italian clubs, knocking Milan out last season just weeks after Max Allegri was replaced by Clarence Seedorf. Juve gave their new all-green strip its debut and Claudio Marchisio blasted wide from distance, while Leonardo Bonucci went into the book early on for jumping with his elbow raised. Arda Turan got away on the counter, but Mandzukic backheeled it on to Arturo Vidal’s prone body – including his arm – from point-blank range. Atleti’s high pressing game was causing problems and it led to Mandzukic testing Gigi Buffon from the edge of the box. Diego Godin nodded a free kick well over and Fernando Llorente just failed to make contact with a dangerous cross. Juve had 69 per cent possession in the opening half-hour and Paul Pogba spun to curl not far wide of the far post. The French midfielder also hit a fresh-air volley in the box after Carlos Tevez was crowded out. Pogba curled a free kick well wide from a dangerous position, as Pirlo’s absence was sorely felt. Goalkeeper Moya horribly fumbled on a simple catch and was fortunate Llorente hesitated, as he was able to scramble the ball back under control. Martin Caceres risked an own goal when Arda Turan’s fierce strike took a double deflection to bounce up on to his hand, but there could be no question it was involuntary, and Buffon prevented more damage. Atleti stepped up a gear and had their first period of genuine pressure going into the hour mark, but Juve held out for that 15-minute spell and got back in control of possession. Tevez had a shot charged down in the box and an audacious Koke volley off target, but the deadlock was eventually broken when Juanfran’s cross sailed past Mandzukic, but found Arda Turan to tap in from six yards. That was the first goal conceded by Buffon in all competition this season. Max Allegri switched to a four-man defence and Stephan Lichtsteiner’s pull-back was deflected inches past the post bu Raul Garcia at full stretch, risking an own goal. Llorente couldn’t quite turn on a Lichtsteiner assist and Juve failed to break down a solid Atleti squad despite having over 60 per cent possession. ATLETICO 1 - 0 JUVENTUS - A. Turan 74' Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 08:45 P.M. Estadio Vicente Calderón - Madrid Referee: Felix Brych (Germany) Atletico Madrid 1-0 Juventus: Turan fires Spanish champions to victory The attacker's second half goal was enough to give Diego Simeone's men all three points against the Serie A champions in a close encounter. Oct 1, 2014 Juventus suffered a first defeat under Massimiliano Allegri as a goal from Arda Turan earned Atletico Madrid a 1-0 home win on Wednesday. The Turkey international converted from close range 15 minutes from time to ensure last term's beaten Champions League finalists claimed their opening points in this season's competition. Juve had not conceded a competitive goal under Allegri, who was appointed in July, prior to the Group A clash and that record looked set to remain intact as a result of a scrappy affair. Atleti boast a fearsome recent home record in Europe - avoiding defeat at the Vicente Calderon in last season's competition - and the two sides cancelled each other out for much of a fixture that saw plenty of disruptions and stoppages due to fouls. Mario Mandzukic's tame strike 25 minutes in was the only effort on target during the first half, while the in-form Carlos Tevez was kept quiet by the hosts, who were without injured captain Gabi. However, when the sides seemed on course for a draw, Turan got on the end of a Juanfran cross to nudge home the winner and leave Allegri cutting a frustrated figure on the sideline. Amid a fast-paced opening that saw possession change hands regularly, Leonardo Bonucci picked up a yellow card for tangling with Mandzukic after a reckless jump. Atletico then had half-hearted penalty appeals turned down when Mandzukic and Turan felt Arturo Vidal handled in the area. The Croatia international stung the palms of Gianluigi Buffon from distance after 24 minutes, in an opening half-hour devoid of clear-cut chances. Paul Pogba's curled effort from outside the area veered wide of Miguel Angel Moya's left-hand post as the latter stages of the first half became even more scrappy. With fouls aplenty from both sides, the game remained fractured and there was no sign of a goal prior to the interval. Juventus dominated the opening exchanges after the break but, as in the first half, failed to cause Atletico too many problems. Another Turan delivery led to shouts for a penalty as it deflected off Stephan Lichtsteiner and struck Martin Caceres on the arm - although referee Felix Brych remained unmoved. However, Turan was to come up with the goods for Simeone as he timed his run into the area to get on the end of Juanfran's cross after Mandzukic had failed to connect with Juanfran's delivery. The winger - involved in much of the limited attacking play from the hosts - turned home the winner to hand the hosts maximum points on Simeone's return to the dugout following his Uefa ban. http://www.goal.com/en/results-standings/49/uefa-champions-league/group?ICID=MP_TN_166
