Dybala False 9 against Napoli?

http://www.football-italia.net/113589/dybala-false-9-against-napoli

Nov 30, 2017

Juventus could use Paulo Dybala as a False 9 with Douglas Costa and Juan Cuadrado against Napoli after Mario Mandzukic and Gonzalo Higuain injuries.

It kicks off on Friday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT

The Bianconeri had already been expected to do without Higuain in the starting XI, as he only underwent surgery to stabilise a fractured finger on Monday.

While Pipita is in the squad, Mandzukic and Benedikt Howedes have been left behind due to muscular problems they sustained in today’s training session.

Cuadrado, Federico Bernardeschi and Giorgio Chiellini are back in the side following their setbacks.

Max Allegri may well be forced to use Dybala as a False 9 leading the trident attack with Douglas Costa and Cuadrado, as there are no centre-forwards at his disposal.

It’d be a 3-4-3 formation focused on pace and countering the Napoli trident of Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne and Jose Callejon.

Napoli’s only absentees are Faouzi Ghoulam and Arkadiusz Milik, but Mario Rui has shaken off an ankle injury and is expected to start at left-back, moving Elseid Hysaj over to the right and Christian Maggio to the bench.

The Juventus squad arrived at the Hotel Parker’s in Naples this evening, their team bus greeted by crowds of jeering fans.

Napoli (probable): Reina; Hysaj, Albiol, Koulibaly, Mario Rui; Allan, Jorginho, Hamsik; Callejon, Mertens, Insigne

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Barzagli, Benatia, Chiellini; De Sciglio, Khedira, Pjanic, Alex Sandro; Cuadrado, Dybala, Douglas Costa

Higuain to start Napoli-Juventus?

http://www.football-italia.net/113594/higuain-start-napoli-juventus

Dec 1, 2017

Gonzalo Higuain is increasingly likely to be risked from the start as Juventus take on his former club Napoli on Friday night.

It kicks off at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT.

Last left on the bench to begin with, as he only underwent surgery to stabilise a fractured finger on Monday.

However, Mario Mandzukic pulled out with a muscular problem in training and hasn’t even made the trip to the Stadio San Paolo.

This made it seem as if Paulo Dybala would be used as a False 9 in a 3-4-3 formation, flanked by Douglas Costa and Juan Cuadrado.

However, reports from Naples suggest Higuain is determined to play from the start with the aid of a protective cast on his hand.

Sky Sport Italia are confident Max Allegri will risk Pipita at the head of a 3-4-2-1 system, supported by Dybala and Douglas Costa.

Benedikt Howedes is also out with yet another muscular injury, having made only one appearance in a Bianconeri jersey.

Napoli (probable): Reina; Hysaj, Albiol, Koulibaly, Mario Rui; Allan, Jorginho, Hamsik; Callejon, Mertens, Insigne

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Benatia, Barzagli, Chiellini; De Sciglio, Pjanic, Khedira, Asamoah; Dybala, Douglas Costa; Higuain

Juve go 4-3-2-1 at Napoli?

http://www.football-italia.net/113611/juve-go-4-3-2-1-napoli

Dec 1, 2017

Juventus will reportedly spring a tactical surprise against Napoli on Friday by lining up in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

Juve had been tipped to play in a 3-4-2-1 at the San Paolo, but Tuttojuve.com claims Max Allegri has made a late switch to the system also known as the ‘Christmas Tree’.

Consequently, Andrea Barzagli would be dropped to make way for midfielder Blaise Matuidi, with Mattia De Sciglio and Kwadwo Asamoah flanking the back four.

Despite talk of Paulo Dybala possibly functioning as a false nine, the website concludes by expecting him to play just behind Gonzalo Higuain.

Juve XI for Napoli (probable): Buffon; De Sciglio, Benatia, Chiellini, Asamoah; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala, Douglas Costa; Higuain.

When Allegri met Sarri

http://www.football-italia.net/113618/when-allegri-met-sarri

Dec 1, 2017

Napoli and Juventus meet at the San Paolo tonight for the biggest game of the season so far, but the two Coaches have been locking horns for close to 15 years.

Massimiliano Allegri and Maurizio Sarri first encountered each other in the 2003-04 Serie C2 season.

Allegri had hung up his boots the previous season after 28 games with Aglianese, and had been appointed on the Neroverdi bench, his first job as Coach.

Sarri, meanwhile, was taking charge of a match in the professional leagues for the first time in his career. Having won promotion from Serie D with Sansovino, he was entrusted with the Sangiovannese job.

The Partenopei Coach had only quit his job with Banca Toscana ahead of the 1999-2000 season.

The two sides met in Arezzo for a Sangiovannese home game on November 16, 2003 in front of just 1,400 fans.

It wasn’t a classic, with Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that there wasn’t a single shot on target in the 0-0 draw.

The return leg wasn’t much better, with 434 lucky fans taking in another 0-0 draw in Agliana.

Aglianese finished the season in 13th, but Allegri did enough to convince C1 side Spal to take a chance on him.

He would meet Sarri there once again, as Sangiovannese finished second to also earn promotion to Serie C1.

Allegri and Sarri have faced each other 11 times in total, and it’s the Juventus Coach who has the upper hand.

The Bianconeri boss has won six of their meetings, with two wins for Sarri and another three draws.

Line-ups: Napoli-Juventus

http://www.football-italia.net/113630/line-ups-napoli-juventus

Dec 1, 2017

Gonzalo Higuain is passed fit to start for Juventus against his former club, as Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne lead Napoli in this Scudetto showdown.

It kicks off at the Stadio San Paolo at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT.

The Partenopei are top of the table and still unbeaten in Serie A this season, but host the side that has won the last six editions of the tournament.

Arkadiusz Milik and Faouzi Ghoulam are long-term absentees, but Mario Rui has shaken off an ankle problem to start, returning Elseid Hysaj to his preferred right-back role.

The rest is Maurizio Sarri’s ideal XI, with Mertens, Insigne and Jose Callejon supported by Jorginho, Allan and captain Marek Hamsik.

Juventus certainly cannot rely on their usual routine, because Mario Mandzukic, Benedikt Howedes and Stephan Lichtsteiner haven’t even made the trip down south due to injuries.

Higuain is therefore forced to start despite only having surgery to stabilise a fractured bone in his hand on Monday.

The only other alternative would’ve been to use Paulo Dybala as a False 9, but Max Allegri does mirror Sarri’s formation with a 4-3-2-1 approach that effectively turns into 4-3-3 when attacking.

Douglas Costa and Dybala support Pipita, who’ll get a frosty reception from his former fans, with Mattia De Sciglio and Kwadwo Asamoah as the full-backs.

Giorgio Chiellini returns from his injury, allowing Andrea Barzagli and Alex Sandro to rest ahead of the crucial Champions League match with Olympiacos.

Juve’s history in this fixture is not promising, managing only one victory in the last 13 competitive visits. That was a 3-1 result in January 2015, interrupting eight losses and four draws.

The Turin giants haven’t kept a clean sheet at the San Paolo since their 0-0 draw in March 1997, conceding 31 goals in their last 16 trips between Serie A, Serie B and the Coppa Italia. In that time, the Bianconeri only failed to find the net twice, scoring 25.

Napoli will wear their black third choice kit, while Juventus are all in yellow.

Tonight’s fixture was so eagerly-awaited in Naples that episodes of Sky show Gomorrah were released early to the On Demand service so they wouldn’t clash.

Juve fans have been barred from making the trip to the Stadio San Paolo due to security concerns.

Napoli: Reina; Hysaj, Albiol, Koulibaly, Mario Rui; Allan, Jorginho, Hamsik; Callejon, Mertens, Insigne

Napoli bench: Sepe, Rafael, Maksimovic, Chiriches, Maggio, Rog, Diawara, Zielinski, Ounas, Giaccherini, Leandrinho

Juventus: Buffon; De Sciglio, Benatia, Chiellini, Asamoah; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala, Douglas Costa; Higuain

Juventus bench: Szczesny, Pinsoglio, Rugani, Alex Sandro, Marchisio, Barzagli, Bentancur, Sturaro, Bernardeschi, Cuadrado

HT 0-1: Higuain silences the San Paolo

http://www.football-italia.net/113638/ht-higuain-silences-san-paolo

Dec 1, 2017

Gonzalo Higuain has given Juventus the half-time lead against his old club Napoli, but Gigi Buffon was decisive in a fiery San Paolo atmosphere.

This was a Scudetto showdown between first and third, the current leaders and side that won the last six editions, but also bitter rivals. Gonzalo Higuain had surgery on a broken bone in his hand on Monday, but still insisted on starting against his former club, especially as Mario Mandzukic, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Benedikt Howedes didn’t make the trip. Max Allegri adopted a new 4-3-2-1 formation that almost mirrored Maurizio Sarri’s Napoli, who welcomed back Mario Rui from an ankle problem. Faouzi Ghoulam and Arkadiusz Milik are long-term absentees.

Juve’s history in this fixture was not promising, managing only one victory in the last 13 competitive visits. That was a 3-1 result in January 2015, interrupting eight losses and four draws. Their last clean sheet at the San Paolo was the 0-0 draw in March 1997, conceding 31 goals in their next 16 trips between Serie A, Serie B and the Coppa Italia.

It was an aggressive start from both sides, as Allan robbed Miralem Pjanic to roll across, but Marek Hamsik got there a fraction of a second too late. At the other end, Douglas Costa’s through ball allowed Higuain to spring the offside trap and as he chipped it from a tight angle, Pepe Reina saved with his shoulder.

Juve took the lead at the San Paolo on a classic counter-attack and it had to be Higuain. Paulo Dybala used the Douglas Costa run to draw away defenders, instead the angled pass released Higuain to stroke past Reina from seven yards.

Hamsik is only one goal away from equalling Diego Maradona’s Napoli tally and his scorcher from distance stung Gigi Buffon’s gloves, but Juve were dangerous on the counter again with Douglas Costa. Higuain was furious with his own teammate for not passing it earlier, then shouted at Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens too, as Pipita was perhaps too fired up.

Hamsik and Mertens had efforts charged down, while Buffon palmed away an Insigne curler and on the resulting corner also parried his glancing header at the near post.

The Napoli pressure and possession built towards half-time, but Juve playing in yellow remained dangerous on the counter and Insigne rushed his finishing.

Napoli saw their unbeaten Serie A record ended by Gonzalo Higuain’s early strike, as Juventus conquered the Stadio San Paolo.

Kwadwo Asamoah got back for a decisive interception to stop Jose Callejon nodding in at the back post. Allan’s give-and-go with Mertens was deflected into the path of Callejon for a daisy-cutter that fizzed inches past the upright.

Another long passing move saw Buffon do just enough to put Callejon off from point-blank range, as Juve were pinned back for extended periods. Mertens went down in the box on 66 minutes and VAR silent check confirmed there was nothing in it, a risky move considering the Belgian was already on a yellow card.

Reina performed an astonishing one-handed save to deny Blaise Matuidi moments later, as Miralem Pjanic’s long ball found him at the far post and the volley was kicked into the ground, but the Spaniard somehow palmed it over from point-blank range.

Insigne’s ferocious strike flashed across the face of goal, but he also picked up an injury and limped off for Adam Ounas. Despite holding 66 per cent of possession, Napoli were unable to make it count, even with Reina coming up for a corner in stoppages.

Napoli: Reina; Hysaj, Albiol, Koulibaly, Mario Rui (Maggio 76); Allan (Zielinski 67), Jorginho, Hamsik; Callejon, Mertens, Insigne (Ounas 76)

Buffon: 'Don't get ahead of ourselves'

Juventus, Buffon: «Non ci esaltiamo, è solo un punto di partenza»

http://www.football-italia.net/113641/buffon-dont-get-ahead-ourselves

Dec 1, 2017

Gigi Buffon said Juventus should “not get ahead of ourselves” after the 1-0 victory away to Serie A leaders Napoli and thanked Gonzalo Higuain.

“I am satisfied, but also know that we are still second with an extra game and tomorrow risk being third. That means tonight’s game has to be a starting point and we certainly shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves,” the goalkeeper told Mediaset Premium.

“We are happy, because winning here is not easy, but it’s early days. When we take on certain games with this determination, unity and focus, we are a truly solid team that could repeat its success yet again. It’s not easy to bring these ingredients to the field every time.”

Higuain played despite only undergoing surgery for a fractured bone in his hand on Monday and scored the decisive goal against his old club.

“Pipita has been on stunning form for the last two months and it would’ve been a shame to lose him for a game like this. The fact he gave his commitment and contribution through the pain means a lot to us.”

With this result, Juventus are right back in the thick of the title race and only one point off Napoli.

“We know that in certain conditions, we are still ‘us’ – but it’s not easy to do that every three days, as it involves an enormous output of energy. Yet we are still here and that is a big sign.”

Gonzalo Higuain refused a post-match interview after scoring the Juventus winner against Napoli. “I did my talking on the pitch.”

It was an ideal return to the Stadio San Paolo for Pipita, who ignored the insults of his former fans to decide the game.

Pipita was approached by Sky Sport Italia to give the traditional post-match interview after the 1-0 result, but refused.

“I already did my talking on the pitch.”

The Argentina international had been a major doubt to even feature in this game, as he had surgery to stabilise a fractured bone in his hand on Monday and played with a protective cast.

Allegri: 'Juve slowed Napoli down'

Dec 2, 2017

Max Allegri gave the key to the Juventus victory against Napoli. “If you let them pick up the pace, they become devastating.”

The Bianconeri earned a 1-0 win at the Stadio San Paolo on Friday night thanks to Gonzalo Higuain’s 13th-minute counter-attack.

“In the first half, we held out well under the pressure and tended to break free from it, while in the second half we managed to slow down the Napoli moves,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Maurizio Sarri’s side played very well and to leave here with a clean sheet, we needed a performance like that.

“Napoli play wonderful football and if you let them pick up the pace, then they become devastating.”

Allegri was asked if the Juventus success was the triumph of tactics over aesthetics.

“I wouldn’t know, I’m not an expert on these things…”

Higuain was on target, but he was originally expected to sit this one out after having surgery on a fractured bone in his hand on Monday.

“He was relaxed, because until yesterday, he thought he wasn’t going to play. Then Mario Mandzukic got hurt and I was forced to play Higuain.”

Benatia: 'Title race wide open'

Medhi Benatia believes Juventus “blew the title race wide open” with their 1-0 victory at leaders Napoli. “We had to send this signal.”

Gonzalo Higuain scored the decider at the Stadio San Paolo last night, ending the Partenopei’s nine-month unbeaten Serie A run.

“We found the right attitude, which we had been lacking recently,” the defender told Mediaset Premium.

“We blew the title race wide open. We had to send this signal, that we will be here to the bitter end. It was a solid defensive performance and we took advantage of the opportunity to score a goal.”

The result puts Juventus one point behind Napoli, but if Inter beat Chievo on Sunday, then the Nerazzurri will become the new Serie A leaders.

If the Bianconeri had lost, they would’ve fallen seven points adrift of Napoli.

Sarri 'sad' at Napoli-Juve kits

Maurizio Sarri was just as disheartened as many fans when both Napoli and Juventus wore away kits at the San Paolo. “I thought I’d die first.”

The Bianconeri – wearing bright yellow on the night – won the match last night with a lone goal from Gonzalo Higuain.

The Azzurri – who on this occasion were dressed all in black – suffered their first Serie A defeat in nine months.

“I am very sad for two reasons today, which is for the Napoli fans, and one for me, because I thought I’d die before I saw a Napoli v Juventus with grey jerseys against yellow,” Napoli Coach Sarri told Mediaset Premium.

“It hurt, as it hurt I imagine for those who grew up with Panini stickers and with attachment to club colours. It made me profoundly sad.”

The decision to honour the various sponsors with both sides wearing away kits prompted confusion and controversy in the biggest game of the season so far.

Sacchi critical of Juve tactics

http://www.football-italia.net/113709/sacchi-critical-juve-tactics

Dec 3, 2017

Arrigo Sacchi has criticised Juventus’ tactics in Friday’s win over Napoli, saying their victory ‘wouldn’t be celebrated in Spain.’

The former Milan and Italy Coach believes Max Allegri’s team should have displayed more attacking intent after Gonzalo Higuain’s early goal gave them the lead at the San Paolo – despite the Old Lady hanging on to claim a vital three points.

“They won, yes, but with a goal scored in the first 15 minutes,” Sacchi told Corriere del Mezzogiorno.

“After that, they were all back there defending to close it out.”

Sacchi, whose hugely successful career included spells as Atletico Madrid boss and Real Madrid director of football, added that the manner of Juve’s win would be frowned upon across the Mediterranean.

“In Spain, a win like Juve’s wouldn’t be celebrated. Football’s founding fathers would never have imagined giving life to a game that would be developed in such a defensive way.

“For those who love football, the game can only be offensive.

“Juve have everything to become a great team. However, their improvement will become complicated if they simply allow their opponents to play for 70 minutes.”

Juve: Chiellini out, Mandzukic in

http://www.football-italia.net/113771/juve-chiellini-out-mandzukic

Dec 4, 2017

Mario Mandzukic is back in Juventus’ squad for their Champions League clash with Olympiakos on Tuesday, but Giorgio Chiellini misses out.

Mandzukic returns after being ruled out of Juve’s 1-0 win at Napoli with a calf strain, but Juve have confirmed that Chiellini will not travel to Greece due to a stomach bug.

The Bianconeri must beat Olympiakos to secure their place in the Champions League last 16, although their progress would be assured if Sporting CP fail to beat Barcelona.

Juve squad for Olympiakos: Buffon, Pinsoglio, Szczesny; De Sciglio, Benatia, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Rugani; Pjanic, Khedira, Marchisio, Matuidi, Asamoah, Sturaro, Bentancur; Cuadrado, Higuain, Dybala, Douglas Costa, Mandzukic, Bernardeschi

Barzagli: ‘Olympiakos is crucial’

http://www.football-italia.net/113784/barzagli-‘olympiakos-crucial’

Dec 4, 2017

Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli admits tomorrow’s Champions League clash with Olympiakos is “crucial for us”.

The Bianconeri will qualify for the Last 16 if they win in Greece, and will be guaranteed to progress if Barcelona beat Sporting at the Camp Nou.

“There are pitfalls,” Barzagli warned in the pre-match Press conference.

“We’d be fools to slip-up, because tomorrow’s match is crucial for us. It’s really the first objective for the season, we understand its importance and consequently we know the game won’t be easy.

“The first leg with Olympiakos was a complicated game, they defended well and they’re a physical team, so it won’t be easy.

“We’re playing in their stadium and they’ll want to do well to close out their Champions League campaign, so it’s a complicated match where we need to be very focused and very careful.”

After some patch form at the start of the season, the Old Lady took a crucial victory away at Napoli on Friday night, could that prove to be a turning point?

“The mentality has always been the same, it’s in the DNA of this club. On Friday we put in a really tough performance, and maybe it had been a long time…

“But maybe also it was down to the atmosphere, everything that was waiting for us in that match.

“We played a great game in every regard, and that has to give us an extra boost to face what will be a really tough period.”

Douglas Costa’s form has been widely praised in recent weeks, and Barzagli echoed those sentiments.

“He’s a player who can really make the difference one-on-one,” the centre-back confirmed.

“He can create numerical superiority for us and that’s important. He has some characteristics which are crucial in modern football, and now he’s had his adjustment period because coming to play in Italy isn’t easy.

“Now he also understands how Italian football works, our philosophy of play, so now he’s putting in great performances and really helping us.

“He’s helping us in developing the play, but also in what he gives the attack, creating numerical superiority.”

Another who has been praised in recent weeks is Medhi Benatia.

“In my opinion Medhi is a great defender, but sometimes he’s not convinced of it himself and it’s crucial for us that he becomes a key man, because he’s an international player, a good one, and he has great physical strength.

“I think now he’s showing that with great performances and he’s becoming crucial for us. It’s crucial that a player like him feels important, because he can make the whole team grow.”

Allegri: ‘Buffon, Pjanic in doubt’

http://www.football-italia.net/113786/allegri-‘buffon-pjanic-doubt’

Dec 4, 2017

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri says Miralem Pjanic and Gianluigi Buffon are doubts for Olympiakos but “Gonzalo Higuain will play”.

The Bianconeri need a win in Greece to be sure of qualification for the Last 16 of the Champions League, but they could be without two key players.

“Higuain will play tomorrow, because he’s fine physically and mentally,” Allegri revealed in his pre-match Press conference.

“Tomorrow Mandzukic will be available, there are two problems I’ll have to evaluate tomorrow.

“One is Buffon and the other is Pjanic, so if they play, good, if not another two will play.

“Pjanic has muscular fatigue and Buffon has a calf problem, so I’ll have to evaluate them tomorrow because I can’t risk playing a player and then having them miss a load of games.

“If Gigi doesn’t play then Szczesny will play, so we’re covered, but tomorrow is a lot more difficult and important than Napoli was.

“Tomorrow is the first objective of the season, there’s time to recover in the league but tomorrow we don’t have time to recover, because there will be no rematch after tomorrow.

“We need to win otherwise we risk going out, we can’t wait for the match in Barcelona against Sporting.

“It’s a complicated game because we’re coming off a really tough game against Napoli, and we already lost a first place once when we went to Sevilla with the wrong attitude.

“So tomorrow is a game where we have to be very attentive, very patient, because Champions League games aren’t easy to win, especially away from home.

“So it’s a complicated game for us tomorrow, a game we have to face with great respect, especially mentally, without thinking about what could happen in Barcelona.”

Allegri was then asked if that would affect his decisions in defence, namely whether he’d opt for a back-three or back-four.

“No, I haven’t decided yet. At the back, with Chiellini out, Rugani or De Sciglio will play.

“It’s not about playing three or four though, it’s just about the characteristics of the players. In Naples we played with four in midfield, but the difference was that Matuidi was on the outside and Mandzukic wasn’t there, or rather there wasn’t a more attacking winger.

“On the other side was Douglas Costa and in that game he could give us advantages and play one-on-one, then he also sacrificed a lot in the defensive phase, a clear sign that he understands what Italian football is, what the DNA of Juventus is.

“We can’t mess around tomorrow. It was a beautiful night in Naples, because for the first time we went there as I’d say… almost lambs to the slaughter. and so I’m happy for the lads.

“It has to be normal though, so tomorrow we think about Olympiakos and then from Thursday we turn our attentions to Inter. You can’t go from euphoria to depression, we have to live normally.

“The norm is that Juventus have to win games to get to the end, to win leagues, fight for the Champions League - which is a lottery - and try to win the Coppa Italia, because in 10 days we’re playing in that.”

Will Paulo Dybala be rested tomorrow?

“We played four days ago, so we’ve had plenty of time to recover. We have plenty of time to recover for the match with Inter too, and some players have played less than others.

“Tomorrow is another important test for Dybala, because he’s a player who can’t be content with what he’s done, he has to demand much more from himself.

“That’s true for everyone, but him even more so because he has extraordinary qualities and he needs to get back to his best in terms of performances, regardless of goals.

“He’s an important player, and one who should be decisive in this match tomorrow.”

Line-ups: Olympiacos-Juventus

Dec 5, 2017

Juventus are without Gigi Buffon, Mario Mandzukic and Miralem Pjanic, but rely on Juan Cuadrado and Douglas Costa against Olympiacos.

It kicks off in Athens at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT.

The Bianconeri have one foot in the Champions League Round of 16, as the only way they’ll go out is if they fail to get the victory and Sporting beat guaranteed group winners Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Max Allegri is fresh from a surprise 1-0 win away to Serie A leaders Napoli thanks to Gonzalo Higuain, but has many problems to contend with.

Giorgio Chiellini, Benedikt Howedes and Buffon are out of action, with Miralem Pjanic, Mario Mandzukic and Federico Bernardeschi only fit for the bench, so Wojciech Szczesny steps in.

Blaise Matuidi and Sami Khedira form the midfield, with Cuadrado, Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa fanning out behind Higuain.

Mattia De Sciglio starts at right-back, as Stephan Lichtsteiner is cup-tied.

Olympiacos are already guaranteed their spot at the bottom of the group, but are always a handful in front of their passionate home fans.

Diogo Figueiras is suspended and Emmanuel Emenike out with a knee injury, but the line is led by ex-Palermo striker Uros Djurdjevic.

Olympiacos: Proto; Elabdellaoui, Engels, Nikolao, Koutris; Romao, Tachtsidis; Pardo, Odjidja, Seba; Djurdjevic

Olympiacos bench: Choutesiotis, Botia, Fortounis, Marin, Gillet, Nabouhane, Andoutsos

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Benatia, Barzagli, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Matuidi; Cuadrado, Dybala, Douglas Costa; Higuain

Juventus bench: Pinsoglio, Pjanic, Marchisio, Mandzukic, Asamoah, Rugani, Bernardeschi

Juan Cuadrado has given Juventus the half-time lead away to Olympiacos, but Wojciech Szczesny needed a great save to keep it intact.

Elsewhere, Barcelona and Sporting CP are goalless at the break.

The Bianconeri knew they’d qualify with a win, but even that wouldn’t be necessary if Sporting failed to beat Barcelona at Camp Nou. Gigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Benedikt Howedes were injured, with Miralem Pjanic, Mario Mandzukic and Federico Bernardeschi not fully fit. Diogo Figueiras was suspended and Emmanuel Emenike sidelined for the hosts, who were guaranteed bottom place in the group with one point from five games.

The deadlock was broken with the first genuine attempt in Athens, as Alex Sandro controlled a long Blaise Matuidi ball over the top and rolled it across for Cuadrado to tap in from point-blank range.

The Colombian almost got a second, but Proto rushed off his line to smother at his feet, while Gonzalo Higuain’s effort was deflected wide following good work from Paulo Dybala.

However, Wojciech Szczesny needed a great reaction save with his foot at the back post as a corner was knocked on for the header from ex-Palermo striker Uros Djurdjevic.

Juan Cuadrado and Federico Bernardeschi enjoyed a goal in each half, as Juventus conquered Olympiacos to book their place in the Champions League Last 16.

The Colombian almost got a second, but Silvio Proto rushed off his line to smother at his feet, while Gonzalo Higuain’s effort was deflected wide following good work from Paulo Dybala.

However, Wojciech Szczesny needed a great reaction save with his foot at the back post as a corner was knocked on for the header from ex-Palermo striker Uros Djurdjevic.

Szczesny was decisive again on substitute Marko Marin in the second half after Dybala lost the ball in midfield, so the disappointing Argentine was replaced by Miralem Pjanic to bolster the midfield.

It was all Olympiacos in the second half, as Juve rested on their laurels and seemed rather sluggish. Ben Nabouhane fired a free kick into the wall, but 10 minutes from time he had a sensational chance to equalise, his diving header thumping the spot where the crossbar meets the upright.

Douglas Costa drilled off target and Federico Bernardeschi came off the bench for a late scorcher that Proto palmed off the line.

It was only a warning, as Bernardeschi found the far bottom corner moments later when cutting inside from the right flank to arrow in with his left foot.

Olympiacos 0-2 Juventus

Cuadrado 16 (J), Bernardeschi 90 (J)

Olympiacos: Proto; Elabdellaoui, Engels, Nikolao, Koutris; Romao, Tachtsidis; Pardo, Odjidja (Fortounis 61), Seba (Marin 46); Djurdjevic (Ben Nabouhane 71)

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Benatia, Barzagli (Rugani 70), Alex Sandro; Khedira, Matuidi; Cuadrado (Bernardeschi 84), Dybala (Pjanic 62), Douglas Costa; Higuain

Allegri: 'Juve must think positive'

222041405-01bc2928-3835-4b07-ac22-5d91c6

http://www.football-italia.net/113841/allegri-juve-must-think-positive

Dec 5, 2017

Max Allegri wants Juventus to “go for the jugular” when in the lead, but urged their fans to “stop being so negative” about the Champions League.

Juan Cuadrado and Federico Bernardeschi got the goals in a 2-0 result away to Olympiacos, going through second in the group behind Barcelona.

“We got a lot wrong in the second half, so I was angry, and it’s always dangerous in Europe. On a corner there was a flick-on, Szczesny had a great save and we could’ve been 1-1 at the break,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“It was like a Final, we needed the win so we wouldn’t have to wait for the result in Barcelona. We need to improve and be more clinical.

“We misplaced a few too many passes in the second half and risked dangerous situations. You have to understand the moment of that match, not concede and wait for it to pass. We were in a similar situation against Napoli, as we were too static and you can’t control the game when you are static.

“We need to work on not making so many technical errors. When you are in the lead and the pressure builds, naturally it’s a different type of game to the start. It’s a phase of the match we need to work better in and focus on not making mistakes.

“When you realise the game is there to be finished off, you have to go for the jugular. A game can change at any moment on a set play, so we can’t leave it open.”

Paulo Dybala was substituted by not fully fit Miralem Pjanic, as La Joya gave away the ball repeatedly.

“At the moment, things aren’t going the right way for Dybala, but it happened at this stage last season too. Paulo needs to relax and keep doing the simple things, training hard and finding the right fitness levels.”

Allegri closed on a note of protest when a joke was made in studio about the number of Champions League Finals Juve have lost.

“Juventus fans have this negativity in their minds. It’s not easy to reach a Champions League Final. They always say we lost two Finals, not that we reached two Finals in three years. I want them to be more positive.”

Juventus TV apologise for Inter attack

http://www.football-italia.net/113875/juventus-tv-apologise-inter-attack

Dic 6, 2017

The official Juventus television channel has apologised after a guest said he wanted to “cancel Inter from the planet, keep them in the sewers.”

With the Derby d’Italia coming up this weekend, the build-up has begun on JTV with an astonishing rant from one of their guests.

Sandro Pellò, the President of a group of Juventus-supporting figures in communication, made the following comments on their official television channel.

“I dream of burying them, cancelling them from the planet, removing every last glimmer of hope and desire that they have become a normal team.

“They must remain in the sewers where they’ve been for the last few years, hiding in the darkness of the gutters.”

Pellò realised the controversy he had sparked in the statements on Tuesday night and made an apology via Twitter.

“Many Interisti were angry and offended by what I wished ahead of Saturday’s game. A few Bianconeri brothers also told me off. I was joking, it was banter and in a moment of euphoria and fun, I probably went too far. The word ‘sewer’ isn’t nice and I shouldn’t have said it.

“If someone felt aggrieved, I apologise. We’ll see each other on the pitch on Saturday: one will win, one will lose. Whoever wins will mock the other.”

CL: Juventus’ possible opponents

http://www.football-italia.net/113895/cl-juventus’-possible-opponents

Dec 6, 2017

Juventus can face four English sides in the Last 16 of the Champions League, with the other options Paris Saint-Germain or Besiktas.

The Bianconeri qualified from their group yesterday with a win over Olympiacos, and the complete line-up for Monday’s draw has now been confirmed.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side can’t face Roma, as teams from the same country are kept apart at this stage.

In addition, they cannot face Barcelona as they finished behind them in Group D.

That means Juve can face any of the other group winners, with four of the possible opponents from the Premier League.

Juventus could be drawn against Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur or Liverpool.

Facing Liverpool would represent a fiery fixture, as there is bad blood between the two sets of fans following the Heysel disaster in 1985.

While their last meeting in 2005 proceeded without serious trouble, there is still a strong anti-Liverpool sentiment among the hardcore Juve fans.

Allegri: Buffon unlikely, Dybala…

Juventus boss Max Allegri admits Gianluigi Buffon is ‘unlikely’ to face Inter on Saturday but insists Paulo Dybala’s dip in form “doesn’t worry me.”

Buffon missed Juve’s 2-0 win at Olympiacos midweek with a calf injury, and Allegri suggested Wojciech Szczesny would line up between the sticks for the Derby d’Italia.

“Winning at Napoli was a step forward,” explained the Coach.

“Tomorrow will be an important game as we’ll be competing against the top team in the League.

“It’s not often that you face the top two teams one after another. We have to improve the physical condition of some players, but I’m confident.

“Decisive for the title race? Juve, Napoli, Inter, Roma and Lazio will compete for the title until the last day, but tomorrow’s game won’t decide the Scudetto. For us, the title race will remain open.”

Dybala went the entire Champions League group stage without scoring, and Allegri backed the forward to “go back to doing the things he does best.”

“I still have to assess him. I’ll make a decision based on today’s training session,” he added. Buffon’s unlikely to make it. I also still have to decide whether to play three in midfield.

“The less beautiful run he’s going through doesn’t worry me, although he has to go back to doing the things he does best.

“Several players have to recover physically. Pjanic must find his ideal condition, like Dybala.

“We have the chance to improve the general condition of our whole team for the game against Roma on December 23.”

Allegri awaits ‘real’ Alex Sandro

Max Allegri warns Juventus have yet to see “the real Alex Sandro” this season, despite his contribution against Olympiacos midweek.

Alex Sandro’s form has noticeably dropped from last term after a summer that saw him heavily linked with Premier League champions Chelsea, but the left-back played a key role in Juve’s opening goal during their 2-0 victory over Olympiacos on Tuesday.

“A defeat to Napoli would’ve increased the gap between ourselves,” the Coach said at a Press conference for Saturday’s Derby d’Italia against Inter.

“The title race wouldn’t be over, but it would’ve been more difficult, considering that those at the top are dropping so few points against the smaller teams.

“The Derby d’Italia is beautiful to play in, so we need to have a great game and also be a bit lucky in order to bring home the result.

“Attitude? The team have become more responsible. The difference is always made by work and sacrifice, on the part of both the coaches and players.

“The most important thing was for us to know how to read games well. Spalletti? He’s confirming the good things he did over the past few years.

“He’s good at getting the best out of his players. He’s one of the best and important for Inter.

“Mandzukic starter? He had a period when he missed training sessions and his condition dropped, but now he’s resumed [training] and he’s one of those who must recover.

“Alex Sandro? He was decisive in our first goal [against Olympiacos], but we haven’t seen the real Alex Sandro yet.”

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri has named his squad to face Inter, with no Gianluigi Buffon or Stephan Lichtsteiner.

The Bianconeri can go top of Serie A, at least temporarily, if they win the Derby d’Italia tomorrow, but they’ll have to do it without their captain.

Allegri warned in his Press conference earlier today that it was “unlikely” the goalkeeper would be fit after a calf injury, and Buffon hasn’t been included in the squad.

As a result, 18-year-old Leonardo Loria comes in as third choice behind Wojciech Szczesny and Carlo Pinsoglio.

Lichtsteiner also misses out, but Giorgio Chiellini is back in the squad after missing the trip to Olympiacos in midweek.

Juventus squad to face Inter: De Sciglio, Chiellini, Benatia, Pjanic, Khedira, Cuadrado, Marchisio, Higuain, Dybala, Douglas Costa, Alex Sandro, Matuidi, Barzagli, Pinsoglio, Mandzukic, Asamoah, Szczesny, Rugani, Sturaro, Bentancur, Bernardeschi, Loria
