Remarkable comeback earns Juventus draw against Bologna 3-3

Terribile, poi meravigliosa: una Juve mai vista riacciuffa tre gol al Bologna!

Where does one start with this game? It was definitely a game of two halves that showcased both the good and bad sides of Juventus.

Bologna came out of the starting blocks at breakneck speed, scoring two goals within the first eleven minutes.

Thiago Motta has done a brilliant job with Bologna, and it took his men just two minutes to find the back of the net, courtesy of Riccardo Calafiori. This was followed just nine minutes later by a goal from Santiago Castro, leaving Juve completely shell-shocked. ............

Just eight minutes after the halftime break, Juventus found themselves three goals down, thanks to another goal from Juve target Calafiori. ............

However, Paolo Montero’s men burst into life with three goals in a crazy eight-minute spell, starting in the 76th minute with a goal from Federico Chiesa. Seven minutes later, Arkadiusz Milik smashed the ball in, and Juventus was very much back in the game at 3-2.

That scoreline lasted just one minute before Kenan Yildiz got his name on the scoresheet to make it 3-3.

Juventus were now in the ascendency, but time ran out for Montero’s men, and the game ended in a draw. ............

Montero leads dramatic Juventus comeback against Bologna

Incoming manager Thiago Motta shown a thing or two about Juve's fighting spirit

Bologna FC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

As far as starts go, it couldn't get more inauspicious than Juventus going 3-0 down away against Thiago Motta's Bologna. They had chased Juve down after a flat run of form to close the season for the Bianconeri, and when their soon to be ex-manager (if rumours are to be believed that he is taking over Massimiliano Allegri's vacated seat) watched the third goal chalked off for offside, he might have had an inkling something was afoot.

Well, Bologna did get an insurance goal or so they might have thought early in the second half, but with fifteen minutes to go Juve pulled one back, and then two more in quick succession to stun the Renato Dall’Ara.

Speaking after the game, caretaker coach Paolo Montero spoke about how the game went.

“In my view, the draw is the fair result. The victory on Wednesday was important, mentally it drained them a little bit and to come here against one of the best teams at the moment like Bologna, you are going to struggle.

“After that dip in mentality, they fought back with pride and showed how much they care about the shirt.”

On his promotion from the Under-19 side. Montero spoke about the unity he found in the squad.

“It is a special situation for me. I don’t know how to describe it, but the lads gave me this joy. I have been here for two days, they gave me a lovely welcome. When you are in important locker rooms, to achieve certain victories, you need great men in there and I think Juve have great men in this team. ............

Montero was deep in conversation after the final whistle with Motta, given that the pair had earned their Serie A coaching badges together.

“I congratulated him on his season. We also had 45 days together at Coverciano, I got to know him there, we went to dinner every day and talked about football. His team plays really good football, he’s a great guy and deserves all this success.”

After a horrific start, Juventus explode to earn a draw against Bologna

Bologna FC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Football can be a really, really strange sport.

Case in point: Juventus’ Monday evening match against Bologna at the Stadio Renato dall’Ara.

For a game that had no real significance beyond positioning within the top five, there were a lot of subplots going on. It was Juve’s first game after Massimiliano Allegri’s post-match antics led to the coach being relieved of his duties earlier than expected, leaving primavera coach and club legend Paolo Montero as the interim manager. Across from him was Thiago Motta, the man considered by most media reports to be the favorite to replace Allegri in the summer. There are also reports that these two teams could be doing transfer business with each other this summer, too, particularly for Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

For 70 minutes, Motta showed Juventus how to play modern football. Bologna were up 2-0 after 12 minutes and 3-0 eight minutes into the second half, thanks in large part to a brace by Calafiori.

Then, over a period of about eight minutes, Juventus showed Motta what Fino alla Fine means. Capitalizing on a series of Bologna errors, they came back from the dead to score three quick-fire goals within an eight-minute span to even the score and came within a last-ditch tackle of winning the damn thing. The final 3-3 score kept the two teams level on points in third, and maybe gave Juve a little shot of pride going into the season’s final game. ............

Bologna came out of the gates pressing like mad, and Juve didn’t respond well — at all. Danilo almost gave up the ball deep in his own box within 30 seconds, and Freuler pilfered the ball from Cambiaso in the penalty area seconds later, only to be denied one-on-one by Szczesny, who fingertipped the ball around the post before the first minute was up on the clock. The shambolic start continued on the ensuing corner, which was only cleared far enough for it to be put back in low, where Danilo’s deflection put it right into the path of an unmarked Calafiori, who slammed it first-time into the roof of the net for his first-ever Serie A goal. All of 89 seconds into the game, Juve were chasing.

For the hosts, the night was earmarked for celebrating the team’s first-ever Champions League qualification. The dall’Ara was rocking, and the Rossoblu were feeding off that energy. ............

It was clear that the Bianconeri weren’t anywhere close to optimal mentally. The whiplash of Allegri’s dismissal could’ve had something to do with it, but it was likely also a combination of a number of other things, including the hangover from winning the Coppa Italia on Wednesday and the fact that, in a rather meaningless game, some players may have cast their thoughts forward to the Euros or the Copa America. Regardless, they were disorganized, absent-minded, and devoid of any ideas on the rare occasions that they managed to actually control the ball for more than a few seconds. Frustration crept in quickly, and over a 13 minute span three Juventus players received yellow cards, including Cambiaso, who effectively ended his season by going over the suspension threshold.

Juve’s only shot of the entire half was a long-distance effort by Bremer that was blocked in close, although Cambiaso did provide one moment of danger just before the interval when he put in a wicked low cross from the byline that was only kept from being an easy Vlahovic tap-in by a last-minute lunge from Lucumi.

Montero came out of the half with a double sub, lifting two of his cautioned players, Cambiaso and Miretti, for Tim Weah and Carlos Alcaraz. Two minutes in, it looked like Juve might be able to claw out some sort of foothold when Rabiot tested Skorupski for the first time all day, forcing him to parry an angled drive past his near post.

But just six minutes later it looked like the game was well and truly over when Bologna made it 3-0 on a lightning counter. Calafiori blocked Vlahovic’s attempt to turn a pass from Bremer around the corner, then continued charging forward as Urbanski pushed the ball to Castro, who left it on a plate for the center back, who beat an an outnumbered Danilo and put the ball in with a striker’s finish, gently lifting the ball over an onrushing Szczesny.

An attempt to respond immediately was wasted by Gatti, who struck a free header well off-target. Montero then took a gamble, sending on Kenan Yildiz for Gatti and moving the team into a 4-3-3 formation. It looked like a desperation heave at the time, but it would turn out to be game-changing. Arkadiusz Milik and Fagioli soon followed him onto the field. ............

Seven minutes after Chiesa got Juve up off the mat, Yildiz was fouled about 23 yards from goal. Milik lined the ball up and reminded everyone that he is, in fact, a very underrated free kick taker, striking a laser beam into the top corner that gave his countryman zero chance to intervene.

The crowd had barely been able to react to that goal when Yildiz jumped in front of a pass by Sam Beukema, charged down the middle of the field, and unleashed a 25-yard rocket past Skorupski. The time elapsed between 3-1 and 3-3 was 79 seconds.

Bologna FC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

As improbable as everything had been, with two minutes left the impossible nearly happened. Chiesa made a difficult turn in traffic and executed a fantastic one-two with Yildiz to put himself into the channel. It looked for all the world like it was about to open up for him but Aebischer came to Bologna’s rescue at the last second, tackling it behind as Chiesa wound up to take the shot. ............

LE PAGELLE

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 6. One of the only guys in the early going who looked like he gave a damn about doing his job. Made a couple of incredible saves in the first 15 minutes, denying Freuler in the first minute and then adjusting on the fly to parry Ndoye’s deflected effort.

FEDERICO GATTI - 4.5. Lost his bearings on the first goal, where he really should’ve been sticking with Calafiori instead of dropping back toward the goal line. Missed a chance to start pulling Juve back a lot earlier too.

BREMER - 5. Let Urbanski sneak behind him far too easily on Bologna’s second goal. His distribution out of the back (90.6 completion rate, one key pass) keeps him from dropping below 5.

DANILO - 5. Had the best raw counting numbers (deuces wild for tackles, interceptions, clearances, and blocks) of any of the back three, but his defending on Castro on the second goal was atrocious.

ANDREA CAMBIASO - 5. Very nearly got an assist at the end of the first half, but also lost his cool a little when he got booked and did very little else that was positive. One of his worst performances of the season for sure. His season’s over thanks to his yellow card suspension.

FABIO MIRETTI - 4. A straight-up ghost in midfield, only touching the ball 17 times — and was dispossessed on three of them. A loan next year really ought to happen so he can have the time and space to pull it all together.

MANUEL LOCATELLI - 5.  ............

ADRIEN RABIOT - 5.5.  ............

SAMUEL ILING-JUNIOR - 5.5.  ............

FEDERICO CHIESA - 6. He just couldn’t get onto the ball much in the early going as the walls came crashing down around Juve’s ears, but his tenacity in the press earned him a good goal, and he was THIS close to a brace in the end.

DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 5.5. Cut a deeply forlorn figure at the top of Juve’s formation. Often had no support around him, leading him to fight losing battles against multiple defenders alone.

SUBS

TIMOTHY WEAH - 4.  ............

CARLOS ALCARAZ - 5.  ............

KENAN YILDIZ - 7. The engine for the final phase of the comeback, earning the free kick that Milik scored and then created the last goal with a fantastic solo effort.

ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 6. Similar to Vlahovic, he had to do some lonesome fighting, but that free kick was absolutely fantastic.

NICOLO FAGIOLI - 5.5. MY BOY!!!!!!! He actually looked pretty good for a guy who hasn’t had live game action in seven months. Completed every pass he attempted, including one key pass. As he gets his feet back under him, he could pick up right where he left off.

MANAGER ANALYSIS

If this game had ended 3-0 I still wouldn’t have come down that hard on Paolo Montero. The dude had all of one training session between being officially named interim coach and Monday night’s game. Factor in the hangover from the Coppa final and the fact that there was very little actually riding on this game, and it’s hard to get much traction.

Bologna FC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

And yet, Montero rode the horrific start to the match and made one key move that ultimately changed the game. The effect of introducing Yildiz and changing to a 4-3-3 wasn’t immediate, but ultimately it turned it on its head.

I mean imagine that, if you put forwards on the field and use them to attack your opponent, you score goals! Took Montero one training session to figure that concept out, how did it not land with his predecessor in three years?

That said, if the reports do come to pass and Thiago Motta does arrive at Continassa in the not-too-distant future, I hope he was paying attention. Those last 15 minutes are the baseline for what he has to work with. Get to it, man!

Montero thrilled with chaotic Juventus debut & reveals his future

Bologna - Juve - Formazioni, statistiche e cronaca - Tuttosport

Juventus caretaker coach Paolo Montero had a rousing first-team debut, as his players mounted a stunning comeback to earn a 3-3 draw against Bologna. ............

For his part, Montero felt his team only needed a spark to take off, and it came in the shape of Chiesa’s strike.

“What a euphoria! I told Chiesa that if we scored a goal within a certain time we would go on to win it,” said the Uruguayan in his post-match interview with DAZN.

“The analysis is very simple in my opinion. Our team came from an important match, there was a mental decline after an objective was achieved and then there was an opponent who is among the strongest teams in Italy.

“Bologna was the worst opponent we could find today. We endured an hour of difficulty and it showed, then the pride of our boys came out. With courage and pride, we secured a draw.” ............

“I found a united group. These results cannot be achieved without unity. But I can’t analyze certain dynamics yet.”

“We consulted with the staff to make changes after their third goal. It’s easy to talk after being lucky enough to equalize, but the boys went searching for the result, and fortunately, we got it.”

Finally, Montero revealed he’ll resume his role as Juventus U19 coach once the campaign concludes.

“I will return to Vinovo to work with youngsters. I am happy to be back in Turin and to work with Juventus.”

Juventus Player Ratings vs Bologna: Yildiz Completes Sensational Comeback

Bologna-Juventus, le parole di Yildiz | OneFootball

Juventus (3-5-2)

Wojciech Szczesny – 6.5

The Pole conceded three goals but pulled off a few excellent saves, including one in the first minute of the match.

Federico Gatti – 5.5

In earnest, the Italian was the pick of a poor defensive bunch, but Montero still opted to sacrifice him when switching to 4-3-3.

Gleison Bremer – 4.5

A below-par display from the Brazil international who left Danilo hanging on the second and third goals.

Danilo – 4.5

Just like Bremer, the Juventus defender was to blame for two Bologna goals, as he struggled to cope with the pace of the young Bologna players.

Andrea Cambiaso – 5.5

A disappointing return for to the Renato Dall’Ara for the wingback who couldn’t produce much on the right flank and got himself booked for a needless booking which ended his season with a one-match ban.

Fabio Miretti – 4.5

The young Juventus midfielder struggled to cope with the pace and flow of the Bologna midfielders and vented his frustration with a nasty tackle that earned him a yellow card. Like Cambiaso, he was hauled off at the break.

Manuel Locatelli – 5.5

 ............

Adrien Rabiot – 5

 ............

Samuel Iling-Junior – 5.5

 ............

Dusan Vlahovic – 5

The Serbian was a shadow of the inspired striker who delivered the Coppa Italia to Juventus on Wednesday. Was left starving for service and lost his battle against Lucimi.

Federico Chiesa – 6.5

It was a listless display from the Italian, but eventually made the most of an error at the back to poach the goal that kickstarted the comeback.

Substitutes

Timothy Weah – 5.5

 ............

Carlos Alcaraz – 5

 ............

Kenan Yildiz – 7.5

The teenager was the driving force behind the Juventus comeback. Won the freekick that yielded Milik’s goal and then won back possession and scored the goal that completed the remarkable comeback.

Arkadiusz Milik – 6.5

The Pole scored the second Bianconeri goal thanks to a slight deflection

Nicolò Fagioli – 6

The Juventus midfielder marked his return from a lengthy suspension with a decent display. His team’s rhythm improved following his entry.

Italian media player ratings: Deadful Juventus defenders, superb Yildiz

Kenan Yıldız attı, Juventus geri döndü!

Following last night’s memorable encounter, the Italian media outlets handed their player ratings for Juventus who came from behind to salvage a draw against Bologna.

The Emilians were leading 3-0 at the start of the second and appeared to be in full command. However, a few howlers at the back allowed Paolo Montero to secure a morally valuable draw on his first-team debut.

Nevertheless, the defensive trio of Federico Gatti, Gleison Bremer and Danilo were chastised for their abysmal display at the back, earning below-bar grades. ............

The best grades were reserved for Arkadiusz Milik and Kenan Yildiz who came off the bench to put their names on the scoresheet.

The teenager won the freekick that was translated to goal by the Pole, before scoring Juve’s third goal with a solitary effort. ............

Former Juventus coach says Fagioli can be like a new signing next season

Juventus' Nicolo Fagioli banned for seven months over breach of betting rules

Nicolo Fagioli has returned from his extended ban and is now available for Juventus as the current season approaches its end. ............

Despite training with the team throughout his ban, Fagioli saw limited playing time. However, former Juventus youth team manager Francesco Baldini believes Fagioli’s return can be akin to a new signing for the club in the upcoming term.

Asked if he thinks the midfielder will be like a new signing, he said:

“Yes, due to the direction that Juve is taking at the moment. I don’t think we can ignore, at this moment, the youngsters who have come out of the youth sector such as Nicolussi Caviglia and Fagioli. I have always supported the importance of the second team and it makes me nice to see her still there in the running for the play-offs. Next Gen is a fundamental player for the first team.” ............

Preview: Juventus vs. Monza

Juventus vs Monza : H2H, Live Score, Lineups and Statistics

Wrapping up another tough season in Turin, Serie A giants Juventus can only finish third at best, as they tackle mid-table Monza on Saturday. ............

Match preview

After the dramatic sacking of one of their most successful coaches, following a very public post-cup final meltdown, Juventus asked former defender Paolo Montero to step up from the club's primavera and steady the ship. ............

Against Bologna last time out, Juve met the veteran coach's likely successor Thiago Motta, with the two teams locked together on points in a duel for third place: Montero's side initially slumped to a three-goal deficit at Stadio Dall'Ara, but they bravely fought back and Kenan Yildiz struck a late leveller.

Throughout their Serie A history, the Turin giants have only once before recorded a run of seven consecutive draws - between March and April 1971 - and in order to have a good chance of overtaking Bologna, they ideally need to avoid matching that streak on Saturday.

Juve famously lost their only previous home game against Monza in the top flight, and another slip-up this weekend would end a below-par season in frustrating fashion. ............

Team News

After Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli finally returned from his betting ban against Bologna, only Mattia De Sciglio and fellow wing-back Andrea Cambiaso are set to miss Saturday's game - De Sciglio is still hampered by a thigh problem, while the latter must serve a suspension.

Timothy Weah is expected to replace Cambiaso on the right flank, while Filip Kostic and English winger Samuel Iling-Junior contest a place on the left.

Having sparked Juve's late fightback on Monday, Federico Chiesa can now claim a personal record, despite seeing another season scarred by injury; the Italy striker has scored eight goals in Serie A this term and needs just one more to post his best tally yet.

Top scorer Dusan Vlahovic made his 100th appearance for Juventus last time out, but both he and Chiesa could make way for Arkadiusz Milik and Kenan Yildiz up front if interim coach Paolo Montero decides to mix things up for the season finale. ............

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Weah, Miretti, Locatelli, Rabiot, Iling-Junior; Chiesa, Vlahovic

Monza possible starting lineup:
Di Gregorio; Birindelli, Izzo, Mari, Kyriakopoulos; Bondo, Gagliardini; Colpani, Pessina, Mota; Djuric

We say: Juventus 2-1 Monza

Putting the full stop on an uneven campaign, Juventus can take advantage of Monza's wilting form and finish the season with an overdue win.

Then, a busy summer awaits the Bianconeri's new boss, who will be expected to get a well-paid squad back in contention for the Scudetto.

Palladino praises Montero ahead of the Juventus-Monza game

Montero a Sky: «Uscito l'ORGOGLIO Juve nel finale. Il mio futuro? Ecco cosa farò a fine stagione»

Juventus faces Monza in their final game of the season as they look to finish the campaign with a flourish. .............

Juve will be eager to end the term by beating Monza this weekend, and the boys from Brianza will also want to get the win.

Their manager, Raffaele Palladino, has now spoken about Montero, who played for Juventus just like himself and said:

“I think he was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met in the world of football, it may seem paradoxical but it’s true. I have fantastic memories of Paolo. Going from the Primavera to the first team isn’t easy but I think this sort of barrier has been broken regarding the leap from youngsters to seniors.” .............

Juventus made more money winning the Coppa Italia than the English FA Cup winner

Juventus win Coppa Italia final with early Vlahovic strike | Reuters

The English Premier League and its other competitions typically receive a lot of publicity, and it seems they are the most commercialised in the world.

This should ideally earn the teams competing in them more money, and the Premier League does. .............

However, the same cannot be said of their domestic cups, as Juve made more money from winning the Coppa Italia than Manchester United or Manchester City will make from winning the FA Cup.

The report claims the Bianconeri scooped 7.5 million euros, plus 45% of the proceeds from the final, while the winner of the English FA Cup will make 4.5 million euros. .............

Juventus vs AC Monza: Preview and Prediction

Kijk Juventus - Monza Live Stream | DAZN BE

Juventus will take on Monza in their final Serie A match of the 2023/24 season, looking to end their campaign on a high.

Juventus are winless in their last six league matches, and the home fans will demand a strong performance from the players when they welcome AC Monza to the Allianz Stadium in their final Serie A game of the 2023/24 campaign.

The Bianconeri are currently third in the league table, and they will be hoping to finish the season strongly. It has been a disappointing campaign for a club of their stature, and they are expected to win major trophies every year. It will be interesting to see if the home team can give the fans something to cheer about. ............

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

Juventus are likely to shape up in a 3-5-2 formation against AC Monza, with Wojciech Szczesny in goal. The back three should feature Danilo alongside Federico Gatti and Gleison Bremer.

As for the midfield unit, the in-demand Adrien Rabiot will look to add control and composure to the side alongside Fabio Miretti and Weston McKennie. McKennie will look to add creativity, goals and drive to the side, while Miretti will help out defensively.

Timothy Weah and Filip Kostic will start on the flanks. They will look to contribute at both ends of the pitch. Finally, Dusan Vlahovic will lead the line for Juventus against AC Monza, with Federico Chiesa alongside him.

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Szczesny; Danilo, Gatti, Bremer; Weah, McKennie, Rabiot, Miretti, Kostic; Chiesa, Vlahovic

Key Stats

  • Juventus have drawn their last six matches in Serie A.
  • Monza have failed to win their last eight matches in Serie A.
  • 12 goals have been scored in the last five matches between Juventus and AC Monza.
  • Monza have scored just five goals in their last six matches in all competitions.
  • Juventus have conceded seven goals in their last six matches in all competitions.

Player to Watch

Federico Chiesa

The 26-year-old winger has eight goals and two assists in Serie A this season, and he has been in impressive form. Chiesa produced an impeccable display against Bologna last time out, and he managed to get on the scoresheet. ............

Prediction

Juventus 2-0 AC Monza

Juventus have not been able to win games in recent weeks, but they are the favourites heading into this contest. They have the better team and they should be able to grind out all three points here.

Meanwhile, the visitors are completely devoid of form and confidence right now. They are likely to come up short once again. Juventus have the quality in the final third to punish a vulnerable AC Monza defence, and a comfortable home win is on the cards.

Rabiot set to miss the Monza game because of injury

OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL: Adrien Rabiot signs new deal with Juventus through 2024 - Black & White & Read All Over

Adrien Rabiot may have played his last game for Juventus as the midfielder is injured and will now miss the final game of the season against Monza.

Rabiot has been an important player for the Bianconeri and would certainly have started the game against Monza if he were fit.

Juventus will be managed one more time by Paolo Montero, who is acting in an interim capacity before the Bianconeri finalise a deal with Thiago Motta. .............

The Bianconeri will have to replace him in their lineup, as he has been one of the key players in their squad this season. .............

Juventus end the season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Monza

Serie A | Juventus 2-0 Monza: Alex Sandro perfect send-off

Juventus finished the season with a 2-0 win against Monza on an evening when most of their players shone.

Paolo Montero fielded one of the most dynamic Juventus teams of the season, with Kenan Yildiz, Federico Chiesa, and Arkadiusz Milik starting in a front three.

Juve began the game with more excitement than we have seen all season as they probed to find the first goal. .............

In the 25th minute, Yildiz should have scored after controlling the ball well, but a Monza defender made a superb block.

It did not matter for long as Chiesa scored a stunning opener a minute later.

Juve extended their lead shortly afterwards as Alex Sandro arrived at the right place at the right time to score in his last game for the Bianconeri. .............

The Bianconeri went into the break in the lead, and Montero surprisingly replaced Mattia Perin with Carlo Pinsoglio at halftime.

Seven minutes after the break, the Juve veteran was called into action as he was forced to make a superb block from Samuele Birindelli. .............

In the 73rd minute, Montero subbed on Dusan Vlahovic and handed Tiago Djalo his debut for the club.

With very little important action, Montero again made a substitution, bringing on Hans Nicolussi Caviglia with 11 minutes left to play. .............

In the final minute of added time, Timothy Weah brought down Dany Mota in a knee-to-knee challenge for a potential penalty.

After a long VAR check, the penalty was not given, as a Monza player had conceded a handball in the buildup, and Juve finished the season in style with a fine win.

Juventus 2 - Monza 0: Initial reaction and random observations

A little bit of sunshine to close out a very dark second half of the season.

Alex Sandro, standing ovation e lacrime per l'ultima in bianconero con record

The last four months have not been easy for Juventus players, coaches and supporters alike. The results have been disappointing at best and downright anger-inducing at its most constant, with the club that has the biggest payroll in Italy playing like a team that could be sent to Serie B if their form was extended for a full season.

For their final 17 games of the 2023-24 season, Juve collected the amount of a provincial side. It made you wonder when things were ever going to end and turn for the better, only for nothing to improve outside of their Coppa Italia final win against Atalanta a week and a half ago.

Well, my friends, I have some good news for you: The season is now officially over. .............

Two goals in two minutes from Federico Chiesa and Alex Sandro (!!) midway through the first half did the trick, as for the first time since early April we can say the following sentence: Juventus won a game in Serie A. The 2-0 win over Monza ended a streak of six straight league draws for Juve, with Paolo Montero getting his first win as a manager in Serie A before he presumably hands over the reins to Thiago Motta in what feels like a very short amount of time. .............

And with this win, Juventus takes over third place all for themselves as we wait for Atalanta to play out the rest of their schedule to see just where they will finish (and how many teams Serie A will get into Europe). .............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • There goes the storybook ending of Rafa Palladino beating Juventus in his first game and (likely) last game as Monza manager. Sorry, Rafa. Something tells me he’ll be fine, though. (And I’m not talking about his looks because he’ll always be foine on that front.)
  • Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi can officiate Juventus whenever she wants. She’s good — and that’s something that we can’t say about much of her male counterparts.
  • Alex Sandro playing his best game in months in his final Juventus game just felt good. The vibes were good overall, but the vibes around Sandro — which have been very, very bad the last couple of years — were back to being good and that was enjoyable.
  • Sandro, who was clearly emotional as he walked off the field for the final time, very much deserved the reception he got from the fans. This is a guy who now shares a record at Juve with Pavel Nedved — which is never a bad thing to boast about. He’s always been a loyal servant to the club, and you gotta remember that even with his struggles the last few years he was so damn good during the prime of his career. Few players in this day and age spend a decade at one club, but Sandro was just one year off that, so bravo to him for everything that he accomplished during his nine seasons in Turin.
  • Sandro making his 327th and final Juventus appearance and being subbed out for Tiago Djaló to make his long-awaited club debut just had some nice symmetry to it. .............
  • Carlo Pinsoglio pulled off a couple of really good saves and got himself one half of Juve’s first clean sheet since early April. How about that?
  • You forget because they rarely play, but third-choice keepers are usually pretty good, too!
  • Speaking of goalkeepers, Michele Di Gregorio had a very emotional interaction with the traveling Monza fans after the final whistle sounded. If that’s not a clue that he’s getting ready to sign with Juventus, I don’t know what is. (It was very heartfelt and very sweet to see, especially when you consider it’s taking place at the stadium he will call home next season.) .............
  • Boy, did this team miss Nicolo Fagioli.
  • I know it’s a small sample size since he’s come back from suspension, but if his performance against Monza tells you anything is that not playing in a game for seven months hasn’t really impacted his impact on a game as much as we thought it might.
  • Federico Chiesa could have scored a hat trick in this game. The one goal he did score was pretty damn nice.
  • Two goals in two games for Chiesa since Max Allegri was fired. I’m not sayin’, but I’m just sayin’.
  • Carlos Alcaraz did some things well in this game. He did other things not so well. I feel like this kinda sums of Charly’s loan spell at Juventus. That’s probably a good reason why he might not be back on loan at Juventus again next season. Definitely not worthy of that massive buy clause, but you probably already knew that.
  • Chiesa is fun to watch.
  • So is Kenan Yildiz.
  • I like when those two guys are on the field together. Do that next season, Thiago.
  • And with that, the season is over. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was a second half of the season that left many wanting the season to end a couple of months earlier than it actually did. But, with a summer that should see Juve actually do things on the transfer market and a new manager set to be hired, there won’t be a lack of things to talk about around here. Let’s hope it’s mostly good things, too.

Juventus finish unhappy season on high note in win over Monza

Juventus was able to put a button on a rough season with some good play and a heartwarming farewell.

Juventus sluit seizoen af met zege in Turijn op Monza en passeert Bologna | Flashscore.nl

It’s not news to anyone that the majority of the 2024 portion of Juventus’ 2023-24 season has been an unmitigated nightmare. Over the last 17 Serie A games of the season, 10 of them were draws and four were losses. The 2-0 win over Monza in Saturday’s season finale was only their third victory in that span — giving them a total of 19 points in those 17 matches. Despite the Coppa Italia win 10 days ago, the vast majority of Juventini were likely welcoming the end of the campaign.

Thankfully, the end came with a smile.

Juventus actually played — I know, bear with me on this one — well against Monza. They still ceded the majority of possession, holding the ball just 41.9 percent of the time, but what they did with that 41.9 percent was a long ways better than anything the team had put together in quite a while. The two goals they scored could have easily been four or even five, and they were strong enough defensively to record their first league clean sheet in a month. All in all, it was enough to end the team’s AFC Richmond-esque string of draws at six, send the fans home happy, and one of their most loyal servants off in style.

Unlike Monday’s match, Paolo Montero did in fact do a little tinkering with the training sessions he had available to him, and altered the ever-standard 3-5-2 into a 3-4-3. .............

It was Chiesa who finally broke the dam. His first touch off a pass from Milik was a little strong and went right to D’Ambrosio, but it ricocheted into a spot that allowed Chiesa to take it right back in stride, quickly dribble around the center-back, and ripped it into the goal at the near post after Sorrentino committed to the near post too early.

Juventus v AC Monza - Serie A TIM

The team’s attitude in the next few minutes was a refreshing change from the majority of the year. Rather than dropping back, they smelled blood and pushed for a quick second—which they got less than two minutes later when Fagioli put in a cross that was met by none other than Sandro, who outfought three defenders to fire in a bullet header at the near post. You couldn’t have written it any better, and his teammates felt the significance of the moment, mobbing the clearly emotional Brazilian. .............

Juventus v AC Monza - Serie A TIM

Carlo Pinsoglio came on for his yearly cameo, and he was immediately called into action when Warren Bondo, an injury replacement for Gagliardini, put a shot on target. It was right at him, though, and he made the easy save to the vocal delight of the crowd. Five minutes later, Pessina hit his own man with a shot from outside the box, but the carom went right to Birindelli, whose attempt to score against his father’s old club was denied by a sprawling Pinsoglio save. .............

As the half wore on a running battle began between Yildiz and Izzo after an errant elbow from the Turkish teenager busted the defender open. Monza believed it was more sinister than it probably was and wanted more of a punishment from referee Maria Sole Ferreria Caputi, who wasn’t interested in the protests. After a few more incidents between the two, Yildiz went on a long run and tried to finish solo, but his shot was too straight at right at Sorrentino.

Just after that shot came one of the moments we were waiting for in this match. The sub board went up, and the No. 12 was on it. A clearly emotional Sandro was congratulated one by one by his teammates as he walked off the field at the Allianz for the last time in a Juventus shirt. His replacement was an unexpected one: January signing Tiago Djaló made his Juventus debut. Sandro came back to the bench to compose himself before taking a Lap of Honor around the field, becoming the sixth player since the stadium’s opening to be so honored. .............

A few more minutes were added on for the lost time, during which Monza lost Alessio Zerbin to a second yellow card, and the whistle soon sounded, ending the match and giving way to the postgame ceremonies, where the team paraded the Coppa Italia in front of the fans, as well as presenting Sandro with a jersey commemorating his 327th appearance with Juventus, tying Pavel Nedved’s record for appearances by a non-Italian player. .............

Juventus v AC Monza - Serie A TIM

LE PAGELLE

MATTIA PERIN - 6.  .............

DANILO - 7. Trips all around: three tackles, three interceptions, three clearances. Marked men well and on more than one occasion dispossessed his opponent with an ease that almost looked disdainful.

DANIELE RUGANI - 6.5. Defended well and completed 94.4 percent of his passes to celebrate his contract extension. He’ll be a very useful rotational piece next year as Juve return to European competition.

ALEX SANDRO - 10. A ceremonial 10 for one of the most faithful soldiers the team has had for a decade. His peak was incredible, and even though there’s been a steady decline ever since, it’s only been the last two or three years that he’s really become a liability. He’s one of the most decorated players in team history, winning five scudetti, five Coppa Italia and a Supercoppa. It’s fitting that he played his best game in months for his final game, capping his Juve career off with a goal.

TIMOTHY WEAH - 5.5.  .............

NICOLO FAGIOLI - 7. A tremendous day for my large adult son given the fact that he hadn’t started a game since the first day of October. Got the assist on Sandro’s goal with an excellent corner, and that ball he scooped over the defense for Chiesa in the second half was a pass worthy of Andrea Pirlo. We missed him so much, and his presence in the team next year will be immense.

Juventus v AC Monza - Serie A TIM

CARLOS ALCARAZ - 5.5. Again showed a flash or two but was ultimately not quite there. Too many times he followed a good play with a bad one. He’s probably not worth trying to re-acquire on loan again this summer.

SAMUEL ILING-JUNIOR - 6.  .............

FEDERICO CHIESA - 7.5. His goal was gorgeously taken, and he came ever so close to a hat trick with two other chances. Had three key passes and even tied for the team lead in tackles (3). He can build on these last few weeks.

ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 6.  .............

KENAN YILDIZ - 6.5. Looked electric every time he touched the ball. Had a pair of key passes, including on the play that saw Chiesa hit the post. We’ve got a great player in our hands.

SUBS

CARLO PINSOGLIO - 8. Showed that he’s more than just a Chesher Cat grin and a lot of screaming. Made three excellent saves in the second half. Pinso Time is the best time.

DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 5.5.  .............

TIAGO DJALO - 6. When he came to the touchline I genuinely wondered whether we had a No. 33. He played well in the back after a slightly shaky start, giving Juve an option in defense next year.

HANS NICOLUSSI CAVIGLIA - NR.  .............

FABIO MIRETTI - NR.  .............

MANAGER ANALYSIS

Max Allegri bitterly resisted putting Kenan Yildiz and Federico Chiesa on the field together in an attacking trident, even when Juve were in the depths of their second-half collapse. It was one of many reasons why he was on his way out even before his Coppa Italia final outburst.

Paolo Montero needed all of a week to deploy the trident. All the more damning to Allegri is just how successful it was. They harangued the Monza back line and created some really great chances beyond what they did to score. Their five goals under Montero, by the way, were more than Allegri had in his last month in Serie A.

Put on attackers and attack with them and you score goals. ovel concept, ain’t it? I hope the reports of Montero getting promoted to the Next Gen is true, because I think that promotion is well earned. .............

The Top Five Juventus players in 2023/24 ranked

mxw2vdwqft5pom9l102m.jpg

 .............

Several Juventus stars failed to deliver their best displays, or at least weren’t able to maintain their consistency. Many fans and observers pointrd the finger at Max Allegri’s rigid tactics as a key factor that prevented the players from producing the best.

But while none of the Bianconeri stars enjoyed a sensational campaign, some at least managed to impress more often than not, playing an integral role in achieving Champions League qualification and winning the domestic cup.

So here are our Top Five Juventus stars for the 2023/24 campaign:

5. Weston McKennie

The American was arguably the biggest surprise of the season given how inconsistent he was during his first two and a half years at Juventus. .............

4. Wojciech Szczesny

Aside from his howlers in Sassuolo, the Pole was superb between the sticks, pulling off jaw-dropping saves on several occasions.

If this is to be his last campaign in Turin before he makes way for Michele Di Gregorio, then he’s certainly leaving on a high note.

3. Dusan Vlahovic

Perhaps the Serie A Striker of the Season Award was a bit of a stretch, but the Serbian surely turned the page this term following an abysmal 2022/23 campaign.

Juventus fans still expect him to improve and become more clinical in front of goal, but there were times when he managed to carry the team on his back.

Moreover, scoring 18 goals per season for a club that at times lacked any sort of creativity and cohesion is a feat that mustn’t be taken lightly.

2. Andrea Cambiaso

The Italian’s emergence onto the scene was one of the few bright spots of an overly disappointing campaign for Juventus.

The 24-year-old presented himself as a generous and technical footballer capable of playing in a variety of roles. .............

1. Gleison Bremer

While this season was a letdown in general, it might have easily been catastrophic if it wasn’t for the reassuring presence of the Brazilian who has now established himself as one of the most resolute defenders on the Old Continent.

The 27-year-old is a physical beast who relishes one-on-one duels and is also capable of inflicting damage on the opposite end of the pitch as evidenced by his three goals.

We can only hope the management doesn’t cash in on his services this summer.

Montero: “Fagioli can become a Juventus pillar, Yildiz is talented but not like Del Piero”

e7kulr1f5rh0cvpup9b7.jpg

Juventus caretaker coach Paolo Montero finished a brief stint with the first team by beating Monza with two unanswered goals at the Allianz Stadium. .............

The 52-year-old seemed pleased with his experience and tipped Nicolo Fagioli to cement himself as a stalwart at the club after marking his return from a lengthy suspension with impressive displays.

“I have had the good fortune to work with great men, who have the desire to work and improve,” said the Uruguayan in his post-match interview as published by the club’s official website.

“Fagioli is an intelligent player who knows where to position himself to create superiority and the play that the team needs. In the future, he can become a Juventus pillar, because he has the right personality.

“I’ve been with them for only a few days, so I can’t pass judgments, but they are a strong team. But then, every club endures difficult campaigns.

“But then again, the Bianoneri achieved their season objectives. The players are attached to the jersey, I’m glad I got the chance to work with them.” .............

“Yildiz is talented, but is a little different from Del Piero. Alex played more centrally, Kenan on the other hand, goes wider.

“For him, this comparison must be an incentive, because in Juventus, there are three club icons: Boniperti, Scirea and Del Piero.” .............

Finally, Montero explained why he fees at home in the city of Turin.

“When I walk in Turin I feel like I’m walking in Montevideo because of the affection that the people of this city show me.

“This is why I chose to come and live here, before working for Juventus as a coach. I feel at home because of the affection of the people. The mentality cannot be a system, that comes from within: to be a winner, you have to be born with it.”

Heartbreak for Juventus Next Gen as Serie B dream reaches abrupt end

Il sogno promozione della Juve Next Gen svanisce a Carrara

Juventus Next Gen have been eliminated from the Serie C promotion playoffs following their 2-2 draw against Carrarese in the quarter-finals.

Massimo Brambilla’s men had eliminated Pescara and Casertana in the previous rounds, but their dream of playing in the Serie B next season ended on Saturday night.

The young Bianconeri side had hosted the first leg which ended in a draw. Therefore, they needed a win away from home as their opponents had the advantage of a superior league record. .............

Journalist explains how Juventus season can be divided into two parts

Genoa Juve, il gesto di Vlahovic: cede il rigore a Chiesa | Sky Sport

The just-concluded campaign was truly a season of two halves for Juventus, as the Bianconeri proved too unpredictable to win the league.

In the first half, Max Allegri’s side showed they were prepared to make the most of their lack of European football and win as many games as possible.

This raised hopes that they could win the league, and their fans were dreaming of that happening for the first time since 2020.

However, in the second half of the season, they went through a tough period and failed to make a recovery. .............

Juve has since sacked Allegri and a new era is to begin at the club this summer, but journalist Giuseppe Falci looked back at their performance and said:

“A season ends that could be divided into two: excellent first part, second relegation. Yet there was a trophy. A final thank you to Max Allegri. Now we look to the future, to the team of the future, to the coach who will come. Come on @juventus #finoallafine”. .............
