The Bianconeri must secure victory if they are to maintain their hopes of finishing in the top four this season. ............ The upcoming clash arrives at a time when Juventus are battling a series of absences. Several players are either suspended or doubtful for the fixture, limiting the club’s options and forcing a tactical reshuffle. Khephren Thuram and Nicolo Savona are suspended, while Lloyd Kelly, Teun Koopmeiners and Federico Gatti are currently uncertain to feature due to fitness concerns. ............ In light of the absences, manager Igor Tudor is expected to make notable adjustments. Juventus plan to deploy Weston McKennie and Douglas Luiz in central midfield, with Manuel Locatelli likely to be moved into the defensive line to compensate for the shortage at the back. Such versatility from key players will be crucial as the team attempts to overcome this challenging moment. This period represents a significant test for Tudor, who must demonstrate his tactical flexibility and leadership. ............ . Khephren Thuram, Nicolo Savona and Pierre Kalulu are all suspended, while Teun Koopmeiners and Federico Gatti have yet to fully recover. So according to several sources in the Italian media the Croatian manager will be forced to drop his tried-and-trusted 3-4-2-1 formation due to the lack of defenders at his disposal and unleash a 4-4-2 system. Michele Di Gregorio will start in goal as usual, while Lloyd Kelly makes a timely return from injury to link up with Renato Veiga at the heart of the backline. ............ In the middle of the park, Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli will be paired with the versatile Weston McKennie who returns to his original role to fill in for the absent Thuram. ............ Kenan Yildiz returns in attack after serving a two-match ban. The Turkish youngster should link up with Randal Kolo Muani, while Dusan Vlahovic starts on the bench. ............ The Bianconeri got to the game with selection issues as Pierre Kalulu, Nicolò Savona and Khephren Thuram were suspended while Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal, Arkadiusz Milik and Teun Koopmeiners were out injured. ............ The home side dominated possession in the first half and had the first two chances with Randal Kolo Muani and Manuel Locatelli. ............ Kenan Yildiz returned to action after serving a two-game ban, and his shot from distance was deflected for a Juventus corner kick, but the Old Lady had the best chance in the first half just seconds before the break, when Okoye pushed Nico’s shot onto the base of the upright. ............ The Bianconeri took the lead after the hour mark when Oumar Solet won the ball from Conceiçao inside the box, but lost it quickly from Yildiz’s pressing, so the Turkish striker passed it to Nico Gonzalez, who found the net with a powerful attempt at the far post. Dusan Vlahovic was introduced as a substitute at minute 72 and found the net in the final stages, finalising a perfect counter-attack conducted by Yildiz, who provided his second assist in the game. Roma’s win against Milan and Lazio’s draw against Inter mean the Bianconeri remain alone in fourth, but will need another victory in the final matchday against Venezia to be certain of Champions League qualification. . With so much at stake, Juventus had to defeat Udinese, and they began the game as if they understood the importance of winning. ............ Juve dominated possession, as any team chasing victory would, and they also created the better chances early on. ............ Juve had to increase the pressure in the second half, and they did exactly that, aware of the cost of failing to beat Udinese at home. The pressure eventually paid off as Nicolas Gonzalez opened the scoring, following some fine work from Yildiz. Juve needed to push for more goals, as one was not enough, and Igor Tudor introduced some fresh legs, including Dusan Vlahovic. The Serbian’s introduction soon made an impact, as he scored the second goal of the night to extend Juve’s lead and underline their dominance in a 2-0 win. . Winning was crucial for the hosts to maintain the lead in the race for the fourth Champions League spot, especially with Roma beating Milan at the Stadio Olimpico. Tudor’s men dominated the action from the get-go, but were wasteful in the first half. ............ Nevertheless, the Zebrette’s resistance ended in the second period when Gonzalez scored from a play he instigated himself, while Dusan Vlahovic put some daylight between the two sides after coming off the bench, taking advantage of Kenan Yildiz’s second assist of the night. After the contest, Tudor insisted he was happy with the performance of every single Juventus player. “It was a nice game and we deserved to win. It was prepared in the best way. It’s never easy to play Udinese, so I congratulate the boys,” said Tudor in his post-match interview. “We miss the last step. We must recover for the Venezia game and play these final 90 minutes.” ............ “It was a serious performance; there wasn’t a player I didn’t like. It was truly a great game. Udinese are a serious and well-trained team.” The Croatian is a big fan of Vlahovic whom many suspect played his last home outing as a Juventus player ahead of an inevitable summer transfer. ............ “He is a strong player. Socrates 8957 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 136666 messaggi Inviato May 19 (modificato) Juventus 2 - Udinese 0: Initial reaction and random observations Juventus will enter the final weekend of the 2024-25 season with their Champions League destiny very much in their hands. I know this sounds like it could end in a massive amount of disappointment next week — and it very well might knowing this team! — but it’s much better than the alternative. ............ Juventus, coming off a pair of draws in which they could have taken complete control of the race for fourth place, got the three points they desperately needed Sunday night. Thanks to second-half goals from Nico González and Dusan Vlahovic — his first in a black and white jersey since Feb. 23 — Juventus claimed an important yet completely unspectacular 2-0 win over Udinese in their home finale at Allianz Stadium to keep ahold of fourth place entering Matchday 38. With Roma beating 10-man Milan 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico and Lazio holding Inter Milan to a 2-2 draw, Juventus will head into the final game of the season with a one-point advantage over Claudio Ranieri’s squad with light blue side of Rome lurking two points behind the Bianconeri. ............ But instead of playing a mid-table Udinese side that really has nothing to play for in the standings after securing safety weeks ago, the opposition to finish out the season will be a Venezia side that will have to win to avoid being relegated to Serie B. Oh, and it’s on Venezia’s home turf, too. ............ Juventus’ first half was one marred with ineffectiveness in front of goal despite having nearly three-quarters of the possession, attempting 16 shots and nearly hitting double digits in corner kicks. There were still the same mistakes that we’ve seen from this team throughout the season. Only three of those 16 shots were actually on target, with the final one of those right before halftime hitting the upright after González tried to sneak one in at the near post. ............ But when González found the back of the net just after the hour mark after he forced a turnover in the Udinese box and Kenan Yildiz jumped on the loose ball, you could feel at least some of that anxiety leave the building. Not tally, of course, because Juventus holding a lead this season has been such a delicate affair, but a lead in a game that you had to win was something that had eluded Igor Tudor’s squad. ............ So now we head into the final weekend of the season with Juventus needing a win against a team that’s second from the bottom to clinch a spot in the Champions League. It’s that simple even though you know it won’t be simple at all. That’s just how this season has been, and it makes no sense to think it will go any other way in the final 90 minutes. It sure would be nice to not pay so much attention to the live table next week. I can say that with all of my heart. But I have a feeling I’ll be sweating it just as much as I was this week. I know better than that. RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS Juventus are now officially undefeated in their new home kits. That’s science, folks. Do they wear the new home kits next weekend in Venice? I don’t know. Let’s just hope they don’t wear the yellows. We don’t need them potentially doing something stupid in those things. ............ Welcome back to Kenan Yildiz! Recording both of the assists after serving a two-match ban for an unnecessary elbow the last time Juve played on their home field had some nice numerical symmetry. Or something like that. Either way, do that again next weekend, Kenan. Yildiz got 77 touches on the ball against Udinese. That’s something I can support. ............ It has been impressive to see Costa come in and have to pretty good performances in back-to-back weeks after barely playing for his first 3 1⁄2 months with Juventus. Maybe, just maybe, Juve have discovered a thing for the right back spot next season no matter who their manager is and what European competition they’ll actually be in. Manuel Locatelli took a shot from close range right off the side of his skull and not even two minutes later he’s pressing high up the field and motivating his teammates to do the same. Say what you want about him as a player, but that is the kind of dedication to the Juventus cause that is always going to be appreciated. Even without that two-minute span in the second half I just told you about, Locatelli played pretty well. The man had more key passes in the first half than Udinese’s entire team. ............ Say what you want about ‘em, but a central defense pairing of Veiga and Kelly limited Udinese to all of seven shots and both of the saves that Michele Di Gregorio had to make were all that difficult at all. Well done, lads. No joke, both Kelly and Veiga played well on the whole — they combined for 19 clearances! — and they deserve some recognition for it. ............ Vlahovic got a haircut between Juve’s draw with Lazio and the Udinese win. I prefer my Vlahovic with longer hair and not the tight fade like he rolled out again this weekend. Then again, I’m guessing we won’t be saying that for much longer. I think Andrea Cambiaso hurt his ankle again and I would just like this cursed season to come to an end for him so he can get healthy again. These last five months for him have not been easy as he’s tried to play through a good amount of pain. In conclusion, let’s just go finish this next weekend, Juventus. That’s all I ask for. The Dutch midfielder has been one of the most influential figures at the Allianz Stadium, consistently earning his place in the starting eleven when fit. Previously a regular under Thiago Motta, Koopmeiners has maintained his importance under Igor Tudor as well. ............ On the last weekend of the season, Juventus are set to face Venezia in a match that will determine their qualification for next season’s Champions League. While the Bianconeri are the stronger side on paper, football rarely adheres to expectations. Venezia will be looking to spoil the party, and Juventus must be fully focused to ensure they do not let this opportunity slip through their fingers. The importance of the match cannot be overstated. Champions League qualification remains a critical objective, both from a sporting and financial perspective, and securing that spot would mark a positive end to what has been a turbulent season. ............ Koopmeiners is working diligently behind the scenes in an attempt to regain fitness in time for the decisive clash. The report suggests that the midfielder believes he has a strong chance of being involved and is making every effort to rejoin the squad ahead of the fixture. ............ Juventus must weigh the risk of bringing him back too soon. With the depth in their squad and the form they have maintained in recent weeks, there is reason to believe they can secure the necessary result even without him. ............ . This situation presented a tactical challenge for head coach Igor Tudor, who was forced to make unorthodox decisions in his team selection. Among the notable adjustments, Francisco Conceição was deployed in midfield, a move that raised eyebrows but ultimately paid off. ............ As Juventus prepare for their final match of the season against Venezia, the squad will benefit from the return of several first-team players, most notably Khephren Thuram. Suspended for the Udinese clash, the French midfielder is now available for selection and is expected to play a crucial role. Thuram has been widely recognised as Juventus’ standout summer signing and is strongly tipped to be named the club’s Player of the Year. ............ Despite the success of the lineup against Udinese, Tudor now faces a selection dilemma. While continuity might favour retaining the same XI, leaving Thuram on the bench would undoubtedly spark questions, particularly if the result against Venezia is unfavourable. The manager is under pressure to conclude the season on a high, and for that, he is expected to deploy his strongest possible side. Given Thuram’s impact this season, his inclusion could be pivotal. ............ . Juventus are among the clubs set to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, which begins next month, and current manager Igor Tudor is expected to remain in charge for the tournament. The competition presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Bianconeri as they prepare to represent Italian football on the global stage. ............ Once Serie A concludes, preparations for the Club World Cup will begin in earnest. The tournament’s new format includes more teams and additional fixtures, which will require greater depth and fitness from the squad. Socrates 8957 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 136666 messaggi Inviato May 23 Preview: Venezia vs. Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups Both teams will have a lot on the line when Venezia host Juventus in Sunday's Serie A season finale, with the hosts staring relegation in the face at Stadio Penzo. While the Lagunari need help from elsewhere to have any chance of avoiding the drop, Juve are looking to secure a Champions League return for next season - victory will wrap up fourth place for the Bianconeri at the end of another sub-par campaign. Match preview With just one match remaining, Juventus occupy pole position in the sprint for Champions League qualification, though there are still three teams capable of claiming fourth place depending on the outcome of another Serie A 'Super Sunday'. While the Turin giants will guarantee fourth spot if they beat Venezia, both Roma - who play away against Juve's city rivals Torino - and Lazio, at home to Lecce, stand ready to pounce. Juventus lead fifth-placed Roma by one point and sixth-placed Lazio by two, so they are on track to achieve the board's minimum requirement - albeit a tie between any of the trio would see head-to-head records decide their fate. Taking one step closer last week, the Bianconeri saw off mid-table Udinese, with both goals created by Kenan Yildiz: Nico Gonzalez broke the deadlock on the hour mark before Dusan Vlahovic finally ended his drought by firing home a late second. The latter is one of several men whose future is up in the air - including interim head coach Igor Tudor, who will lead Juve to the new Club World Cup next month but could then depart - so a summer of change may await. First, though, Tudor will attempt to win an away game at his fifth attempt since replacing Thiago Motta, as the Croatian's prolonged trial period continues. After a last-gasp leveller from Vlahovic salvaged a 2-2 draw in December's reverse fixture, Tudor's men are aware that only maximum points will do this weekend - otherwise, fourth place could go to either club from the capital. ............ Team News Igor Tudor should be able to call upon utility man Weston McKennie, despite the USA international limping off with an ankle injury last week, while Juventus can also welcome back both Khephren Thuram and Nicolo Savona from one-match bans. Pierre Kalulu is still suspended, joining long-term absentees Juan Cabal, Arkadiusz Milik and Bremer on the sidelines; furthermore, midfielder Teun Koopmeiners continues to struggle with an Achilles issue. Hoping to displace Randal Kolo Muani up front, misfiring striker Dusan Vlahovic scored against Udinese after a run of seven league matches without a goal, and Sunday's game could potentially be his last for the club. With two assists, Kenan Yildiz took his tally of Serie A goal involvements up to 10, becoming the youngest player to hit double figures this season. Juve have a points-per-game average of 2.1 with the Turkish star in their starting lineup; that drops to less than half (1.0) when he does not start. ............ Venezia possible starting lineup: Radu; Marcandalli, Schingtienne, Cande; Zerbin, Perez, Nicolussi Caviglia, Busio, Ellertsson; Yeboah, Gytkjaer Juventus possible starting lineup: Di Gregorio; Savona, Veiga, Kelly; McKennie, Locatelli, Thuram, Cambiaso; Gonzalez, Yildiz; Kolo Muani We say: Venezia 1-2 Juventus Much improved since the turn of the year, Venezia have become tougher to beat on home turf - but their final-day fixture is far from ideal and relegation surely awaits. For all their flaws, Juventus still boast plenty of quality and - following a few scares - they should get the win that secures Champions League qualification. . Though the reasons are different, the goal is the same – take three points or wave goodbye to your seasonal goals. Relegation-threatened Venezia head into proceedings two points adrift of safety after Cagliari thumped them 3-0 last weekend. Eusebio Di Francesco’s side had briefly reignited their survival hopes with a stunning 2-1 home win against Fiorentina, only to throw everything away at the Unipol Domus. ............ Juventus won’t be out to make friends as they fight tooth and nail to fend off Roma in an intense top-four battle. A 2-0 home win against Udinese last time out saw the Bianconeri preserve a slender one-point lead over Claudio Ranieri’s side heading into the season finale. Therefore, there’s no margin for error. Head coach Igor Tudor may be fighting for his job as well. Securing another season at Europe’s top table could be just what the doctor ordered for the Croatian manager amid talks Juventus could try to re-sign Napoli boss Antonio Conte in the summer. Match Preview Venezia ............ Juventus Dusan Vlahovic returned to the scoresheet against Udinese and could make his final appearance for Juventus this weekend. Despite talks the Turin heavyweights could sign Victor Osimhen to replace the Serbian superstar, their hopes of landing the Napoli superstar have suffered a massive blow. Per French outlet Foot Mercato, the Nigerian could soon complete a shock transfer to Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal. Nonetheless, dining out at Europe’s top table next season would significantly bolster Juventus’ hopes of reinforcing their squad in the summer. As such, extending a four-game unbeaten league run (W2, D2) with a win is imperative. Facing bottom-five sides on the road hasn’t been smooth sailing for Juventus. Indeed, they’ve managed just one win in such fixtures this season (D2, L1). Their overall away form in 2025 paints a similar picture, with only two competitive victories on the road (D6, L4) and none in their last five. As if that’s not concerning enough, Juventus netted 2+ goals in just one of those 12 matches. Team News ............ On the other hand, only long-term absentees Arkadiusz Milik, Juan Cabal, and Gleison Bremer are on the list of missing players in the Juventus camp. Indeed, Teun Koopmeiners and Weston McKennie are back to full fitness, while Nicolo Savona and Khephren Thuram return from suspension. Venezia vs Juventus Potential Starting Line-ups Venezia (3-5-2): Radu; Marcandalli, Schingtienne, Cande; Zerbin, Perez, Nicolussi Caviglia, Busio, Ellertsson; Yeboah, Gytkjaer. Juventus (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Savona, Veiga, Kelly; McKennie, Locatelli, Thuram, Cambiaso; Gonzalez, Yildiz; Kolo Muani. Venezia vs Juventus Prediction Given the stakes, it’s reasonable to expect both teams to be cautious in the early exchanges. Another low-scoring contest could be in store, and that’s the environment that better suits Juventus, who should take three points. Prediction: Juventus to Win . Knowing that their destiny was entirely in their hands, the Bianconeri travelled to face Venezia in a must-win encounter on the final day of the season. However, their hopes of a straightforward evening were dashed almost immediately, as Daniel Fila opened the scoring for the hosts inside the first two minutes. ............ Despite the disappointment, Juventus maintained their composure and gradually began to dominate possession. ............ Their efforts were rewarded when Kenan Yildiz found the equaliser, injecting renewed confidence into the side. Shortly after levelling the score, Juventus capitalised on their momentum and took the lead through Randal Kolo Muani. ............ However, Venezia had other plans and struck early in the second half through Ridgeciano Haps, levelling the score once more and casting doubt over Juventus’s hopes of securing a top-four finish. ............ Their breakthrough came when a penalty was awarded and converted by Manuel Locatelli, whose composed finish restored the lead and ultimately sealed the outcome. With time ticking down, manager Igor Tudor made several substitutions to inject fresh energy into the team and maintain their advantage. . Socrates 8957 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 136666 messaggi Inviato May 27 Juventus 3 - Venezia 2: Initial reaction and random observations And now, thankfully, we can exhale. It was not pretty. It was far, far, faaaaaaaar from anything resembling something good for long periods of time. But Juventus, with so much riding on their season finale Sunday night, got the one result that ensured they would have Champions League football come the fall. Manuel Locatelli’s penalty in the 73rd minute — the first-ever PK attempt he’s had since his move from Sassuolo in 2021 — was the difference in an absolute roller coaster of a ride that ended with Juventus recording a 3-2 win over Venezia at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo. It came with so much attached to it — the chances of Juventus actually achieving one of their preseason goals and finally taking the late lead they so desired. Locatelli, with the captain’s armband on full display, was ice cold as can be with his finish, and the subsequent celebration with the traveling fans behind the goal was proof of just that. With the victory — which also ensured the Bianconeri actually finished with more wins than draws in this cursed 2024-25 campaign — Juve secured qualification into the Champions League next season and sent Venezia down to Serie B just one season after getting promoted. ............ Juve had to rally to pull ahead not once but twice along the way against a Venezia squad that showed just about every good and bad characteristic of an Eusebio Di Francesco-managed team. It was a wild, wild time. It started out as the worst of times. Then it was at least some improved times thanks to Kenan Yildiz and Randal Kolo Muani. Then it was the worst of times again, only for Locatelli to make it a happy yet incredibly nervous time again. But they did it. Somehow. Some way. They did it. With Roma easily beating Torino and leading from the 18th minute on, this was the only result that would have gotten Juventus into the Champions League. And they did it. ............ The brand of ball didn’t drastically improve under Tudor’s watch. He described Juventus as a squad that was “lost” when he arrived, so it’s not like things were far from completely fixable when he arrived. But in the nine games in which Tudor was in charge, Juventus won five games, drew three and lost one. Thankfully, that loss to Parma — one of the most frustrating results of the entire season — didn’t come back to completely bite the in the ass. ............ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS ............ And, for the record, since you might be wondering: Yes, it was a penalty. Go ahead and get your Hans Nicolussi Caviglia conspiracies out, but that’s a penalty all day, every day no matter who attempted that tackle on Francisco Conceição. If that ends up being the last major contribution that Conceição makes as a Juventus player, by the way, let us thank him and wish him all the best in the future. ............ You gotta feel at least a little bit bad for Hans, too. He was wearing the captain’s armband and was having a great second half before that PK happened. He seems like a very nice and professional young man, so that was a nice thing to see ahead of kickoff when he met with Manuel Locatelli for the coin toss. (I know Venezia’s regular captain was suspended, so it’s not like Hans has been wearing it all season, but definitely a pretty big thing for a young guy who’s on loan at the club.) ............ Speaking of keepers, that near-post save by Michele Di Gregorio a couple of minutes before Locatelli sunk the PK sure proved to be pretty important, huh? Bravo, Di Gre. You done good. How Yildiz and Khephren Thuram were able to walk off that field — dear lord please let them just be cramps and nothing actually to do with a muscle injury — might be a minor miracle. I really have no idea how these guys do it. And that’s especially true when it comes to such a physically demanding game like this one was. Yildiz in his seven appearances with Tudor as manager: three goals and two assists. I think that was a pretty good way to close the season. And with Juve qualifying for the Champions League, the need to sell the club’s biggest asset seems a lot less of a pressing matter. For that, we should all be thankful. Those long and mazing Thuram runs from one end of the field to the other will never get old. He’s got all the tools to be a great midfield, and I hope that happens at Juventus for a long time because they need somebody like him to build around. That defense before Renato Veiga came on ... my goodness. ............ I’m sad that Alberto Costa’s goal didn’t count — still not totally convinced that actually was his arm that the ball hit — because that was an absolute screamer. He’s had a couple of close calls lately, and to finally break through in that kind of way would have been so badass. ............ That atmosphere in Venice was special, man. That crowd knew what was at stake, tried to will their team to a win and they nearly did just that. I hope Venezia comes back to Serie A soon and adds another chapter to their recent yo-yo between the top divisions of Italian football because it’s just a cool place to play in every way. ............ Socrates 8957 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 136666 messaggi Inviato May 27 Igor Tudor says his future at Juventus will be decided before the Club World Cup After helping Juventus secure Champions League football for next season on Sunday night in Venice, it appears as though interim manager Igor Tudor has drawn a line in the sand when it comes to his future at the club. ............ During his post-match media availability on Sky Italia following Juve’s 3-2 win over Venezia that secured a fourth-place finish and Champions League qualification, Tudor said that he will discuss his future with the club “very soon.” On top of that, Tudor essentially said that it makes no sense for him to manage Juventus at the Club World Cup if he is not confirmed as the head coach for next season — which goes against something that we’ve heard from the club’s management for much of the last couple of weeks and again from Chief Football Officer Cristiano Giuntoli after Sunday night’s game that Juve will decide on their next manager after their participation in the tournament. ............ Here are Tudor’s words regarding his future as Juventus’ manager beyond Sunday night’s season finale: “I can say that we will know very soon, a little patience and we will decide, before the World Cup.” [...] “You’re making me get into discussions about which I can’t say anything. We’ll see each other soon and a decision will be made soon, we were all focused on this finale, on the games. I don’t even have to talk about it for a question of concentration, now there’s the World Cup but everything can be resolved beforehand.” It had also been previously reported in the days leading up to him officially signing with the club that Tudor’s hiring on a short-term caretaker basis included being manager at the summer tournament that will see Juve play at least three games in the United States. Juventus begin group play at the Club World Cup against Al Ain FC from the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday June 18, at Audi Field in Washington D.C. Tudor has every right to both know what the future holds for him at Juventus and the stance to not be a lame duck coaching Juventus at the Club World Cup when he already would know somebody is coming in to take his job once the tournament is over. ............ With rumors spinning that a certain former Juventus manager — and teammate of Tudor’s during his playing days in Turin — might be leaving Naples after leading Napoli to the Scudetto this season, the Bianconeri might be trying to rekindle their old flame shortly. And if that’s the case, then they may as well have their new manager start work and evaluating this squad at the Club World Cup no matter who is actually available to play. ............ . Socrates 8957 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 136666 messaggi Inviato May 31 (modificato) Juventus 2024-25 Season Ratings: The Goalkeepers For the first time in seven years, Juventus ushered in a new era in goal. Of course, it wasn’t the massive headline-grabbing departure of one the game’s truly legendary players, but seeing somebody other than Wojciech Szczesny in goal for Juventus took some time to get used to. ............ Di Gregorio’s move from Monza included an obligation to buy this summer for an initial fee of €13.5 million — which looks like a relative bargain compared to what some other keepers have cost other high-profile clubs in very recent memory. That means that a common thought that we’ve had for so many years will almost be certainly remain true following Di Gregorio’s first season in Turin alongside Mattia Perin and everybody’s favorite long-distance uncle, Carlo Pinsoglio: The Juventus goalkeeper is in very good shape and we hope it stays that way. ............ Michele Di Gregorio — 7 If this was done at the midseason point rather than after all 38 league fixtures had been played, this probably would have been a much lower grade. But, when it comes to the entire picture, I was left with a feeling that Di Gregorio definitely got better — and more comfortable as Juve’s starter — as things went on. ............ Sure, it is the most fresh in all of our minds, but just look at the save he made in the season finale against Venezia. It’s not only a fantastic save no matter the context because of how difficult it was, but it came just a couple of minutes before the goal that secured Juventus Champions League qualification. There, of course, are other examples, too. (A few of those saves in the first Derby d’Italia of the season ... my goodness.) Di Gregorio’s counting stats in goal aren’t as impressive as what we saw from him last season with Monza when he was named Serie A’s best goalkeeper. Is that a by-product of facing less shots as compared to a Monza side that forced Di Gregorio into a league-high 122 saves a year ago? Yeah, it certainly played its part. This season, Di Gregorio made 51 fewer saves than he did a year ago, facing 56 total shots on target fewer compared to his final season with Monza. ............ Mattia Perin — 7 Perin looked to be one of the biggest benefactors of Motta’s desire to rotate keepers more than a lot of other managers. It didn’t matter who it might have been against, Perin was definitely a bigger part of the early season league schedule than he had been the previous campaign when Juventus didn’t have any European football on the schedule. ............ Perin’s final appearance of the season ultimately came in Juventus ill-fated Coppa Italia quarterfinal against Empoli in which they were eliminated by a team that was playing their second-string lineup. With no Champions League football on top of that, it was pretty much Di Gregorio’s show the rest of the way and Perin was there in case something happened to Juve’s starter in goal. When Perin was in goal, he was very good no matter the circumstances. That’s not a surprise from him at this point considering he embraces the challenge of being the backup goalkeeper at Juventus where he knows he won’t play as much as he would at a smaller club where he’d start 30-plus games a season and do it for as long as he wanted. The unfortunate part of Perin’s season is that some of his best performances are attached to some of Juve’s most forgettable moments under Motta. ............ Carlo Pinsoglio — s/v One of the most notable things about Juventus’ season finale having so much attached to it is that we didn’t get a typical Pinsoglio appearance. No Pinso Time this time around — which, honestly, was understandable. it’s the second time in the last three seasons we didn’t get the unofficial tradition of seeing Pinsoglio — who has been Juventus’ No. 3 goalkeeper since the 2017-18 campaign — step onto the field as a second-half sub during the season finale. Considering what was happening in what proved to be a 3-2 win over Venezia, it’s not like there was a window for it. ............ . Socrates 8957 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 136666 messaggi Inviato May 31 Juventus 2024-25 Season Ratings: The Center Backs Juventus have completed one of their most interesting seasons to date. After much tumult, exemplified by massive overhaul in both players and coaches, meaningless draws and unexpected defeats, us Juventus fans can breathe a sigh of relief after narrowly beating Venezia on the eve of the 2024–25 Serie A season to mark our participation in next year’s Champions League. One of the more cogent emblems of the club’s headache of a season was their defense. Marred by an injury crisis, Juventus’ backline was subject to change, tinkering, and overhaul no matter if it was through Thiago Motta or Igor Tudor. ............ Regardless, this post will try, arduously, to present an image of normality. McKennie and Locatelli, while we’re grateful for their service, will be in their natural position in midfield, while the great and mighty Gleison Bremer or the outcast Danilo — who played just a handful of games during the first half of the season for very different reasons — will indeed be included here. ............ Gleison Bremer — s/v 2024-25 Stats: 8 Appearances, 0 Goals, 0 Assists, 1 Yellow Card, 0 Red Cards Bremer played just six Serie A games and two in the Champions League, yet he remained a consistent emblem throughout the early parts of the club’s campaign. ............ Since joining the Bianconeri from Torino in 2022, Bremer has represented a commanding, disciplined, and consistent figure in defense — and his eight appearances this season were no different. With his injury, and the string of others that followed, any hope Juventus fans had of winning Serie A were quickly quelled. ............ Danilo — 5 2024-25 Stats: 16 Appearances, 0 Goals, 1 Assists, 1 Yellow Card, 1 Red Card Another Brazilian that failed to make an impact this season was Danilo — but for different kinds of reasons than Bremer. While we Juventus fans should certainly take umbrage with the undignified way the club offloaded the now-former captain, it’s not hard to see the logic behind the decision. ............ Danilo was flawed, and maybe after the Bonucci-Barzagli-Chiellini dynasty ended was simply the best of a bad bunch, but he deserved better. ............ Federico Gatti — 7 2024-25 Stats: 42 appearances, 1 Goal, 2 Assists, 3 Yellow Card, 0 Red Cards Gatti is a tough one to write about. Namely, because he lacks the trappings of a modern defender. Freakishly tall and just as wide, he often looks gawky, awkward and uncomfortable on the ball. His passing ability does not inspire faith, and nor does his first touch. Yet, for some reason, it just works. ............ Apart from being incredibly solid off the ball with his dog-like conviction to retrieve it at the expense of his health and safety, Gatti was also, often, a goal threat. Physically imposing and uncharacteristically clinical in the final third, Gatti delivered Juve fans with some special moments this season — of which, lamentably, the club has few. ............ Lloyd Kelly: 5.5 2024-25 Stats: 15 Appearances, 0 Goals, 0 Assists, 1 Yellow Card, 0 Red Cards Kelly is one of those unfortunate cases where what he represents overshadows his genuine ability. Kelly is the poster boy for the seemingly chaotic season of Cristiano Giuntoli transfers. ............ Not only did Giuntoli and Co. classlessly throw away Danilo who could have easily provided some relief at the height of the injury crisis, but he offloaded one of the best young defending talents in Dean Huijsen for just €2 million more than Juve will have ultimately spent on Kelly. ............ Pierre Kalulu: 6.5 2024-25 Stats: 39 Appearances, 1 Goal, 0 Assists, 3 Yellow Cards, 1 Red Card Kalulu, surprisingly, given the haste with which we signed the deal with Milan, was one of our better defenders this season. While perhaps best at fullback, Kalulu spent most of his year in the center of defense — a lot of it out of necessity after Bremer’s injury. ............ He was strong and confident on the ball and did well to facilitate some attacks. Kalulu also rarely turned over the ball and was solid at recovering. ............ Renato Veiga: 6.5 2024-25 Stats: 15 Appearances, 0 Goals, 1 Assist, 2 Yellow Cards, 0 Red Card Never fall in love with a loan player, they say. Well, easier said than done. Just imagine a back line of Veiga, Gatti, and Bremer next season — a tall, physically imposing back to complement our more skilled and dynamic fullbacks. While he’s young and shows his inexperience in turning over the ball, the player has immense potential and will certainly represent a force to be reckoned with wherever he lands next season. ............ If Juve tried, in some way, to secure his services for next season, he’d be a great addition to the squad. Someone young, dynamic, and ready to learn — but also, more importantly at this stage, it would save Juve fans from the headache of another transfer window marked by hasty and poorly thought-out acquisitions. . Socrates 8957 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 136666 messaggi Inviato June 2 Juventus 2024-25 Season Ratings: The Fullbacks Every year when we write our season reviews, we verify which players belong in which category/group of positions. ............ But for some positions in some seasons, it’s a little more complicated. This season, the fullbacks was one of those. Was Andrea Cambiaso more a fullback, a wingback, or a central midfielder? Did Timothy Weah play enough at right back to be grouped into the fullbacks category? And what about Weston “I-play-everywhere-except-center-back-and-goalkeeper” McKennie? ............ Juan Cabal — s/v Appearances: 9; Minutes Played: 618; Goals: 0; Assists: 1; Yellow Cards: 2; Red Cards: 0 I don’t have an official rule about the minimum number of minutes that players have to play in order to receive a season rating. However, I generally believe that if they had fewer than 10 appearances, there’s not enough data to give them a rating. Unfortunately, Cabal (and a few others) was in this category as he suffered a season-ending knee injury while on international duty with Colombia in November. ............ Juventus purchased the 24-year-old Colombian left back from Hellas Verona for a little less than €13 million. ............ Once again, it’s difficult to give a definitive analysis of Cabal given that he played only a handful of games this season. Based on what I’ve seen so far, I think that when he returns to full fitness he will be a very useful player for Juventus. He’s strong offensively but, unlike most modern fullbacks, doesn’t sacrifice his defensive duties for the opportunity to constantly bomb forward in attack. ............ Jonas Rouhi — s/v Appearances: 6; Minutes Played: 209; Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Yellow Cards: 0; Red Cards: 0 Here we have another fullback who most fans have probably forgotten about due to his lack of appearances for the team. But unlike Cabal, Rouhi doesn’t have the excuse of injury to explain why has played so little. ............ I don’t think Rouhi is a failure at all. However, I think in the few games he did play this season, it looked like playing in the Serie A was just a little too much, too soon for him. Motta gave him a few opportunities, but he seemed overwhelmed and unable to keep up with the pace of the games he played in. He was regularly included in the senior squad throughout the season but was on the bench almost every game. ............ Alberto Costa — s/v Appearances: 10; Minutes Played: 358; Goals: 0; Assists: 1; Yellow Cards: 3; Red Cards: 0 Another senza volta! This has to be a season record. In fairness, the Portuguese fullback has been at Juventus for less than six months, which means he had few opportunities to play. But, in the handful of games that he played, he looked promising. Standing 6-foot-1 inches and 172 pounds, the 21-year old has a sizable physique which allows him to outmuscle physical wingers and/or strikers that drift out wide. Though it’s a small sample size at Juve, he has shown to be defensively solid — which, once again, is a trait in fullbacks that the modern football fan seems to disregard. ............ Nicolò Savona — 7 Appearances: 37; Minutes Played: 2,334; Goals: 2; Assists: 1; Yellow Cards: 6; Red Cards: 0 Finally, a rating! Motta surprised everyone when he gave the Next Gen graduate his full senior debut in the 3-0 home victory over Como on the first matchday of the season. And what a pleasant surprise it was. Savona hit the ground running in the first couple of months of the season. He’s roughly the same height and weight as Costa (192 cm vs. 186 cm; 79 kg vs. 78 kg) and used his physique well to defend on crosses and to provide a threat on attacking set pieces. For his young age, he has showed impressive tactical flexibility by occasionally playing as a right-sided center back in a back three, wing back, and (to lesser success) left back. ............ Nevertheless, Savona is another defender who should be trusted with more games and responsibility in the Juventus defense. Later in the season he got caught out positionally a few times (sometimes leading to goals), so he definitely needs to work on that next season. And there’s definitely some potential for him to develop as a (right-sided) center back. ............ Andrea Cambiaso — 7 Appearances: 42; Minutes Played: 2,895; Goals: 2; Assists: 5; Yellow Cards: 4; Red Cards:0 Like Savona, Cambiaso’s season was characterized by his performances before and after a significant injury. Before his ankle injury in early December, Cambiaso was sensational and continued his great performances from the 2023-24 season. His tactical intelligence and great passing allow him to play as a fullback in defense and wide central midfielder (mezzala) in attack. He defends well in 1-on-1 situations but because of his positional fluidity can be caught out of position from time to time. But then came the freak ankle injury that he sustained when blocking a shot against Bologna. He simply wasn’t the same after that. ............ Overall, I give him an 8 for his pre-injury form and 6.5 for his post-injury performances, which I averaged to a 7 (I chose to round down here). As we’ve seen with McKennie, the type of tactical flexibility that players like them provide is an invaluable asset that this team needs in order to compete for silverware. Let’s hope that he remains a Juventus player next season. .
