Fantastic Di Gregorio could not save Juventus from Club World Cup exit

Juventus v Real Madrid

Juventus were aware this fixture would be a significant challenge, as expected given the strength and reputation of the Madrid side. The Bianconeri opted to rest key players such as Kenan Yildiz ahead of their clash with Manchester City, and that decision appeared to pay off in the early stages of the match, with the team delivering a composed and confident performance.

In the opening exchanges, Juventus created chances and might have taken the lead. At the same time, they effectively neutralised Madrid’s early attacking threats, keeping the score level and restricting clear opportunities. ............

As the match developed, Juventus were increasingly forced to defend deep. In a fixture where many expected standout performances across the pitch, it was Michele Di Gregorio who truly rose to the occasion. The goalkeeper produced a series of impressive saves as Madrid intensified their attacks, particularly from long-range efforts. Juventus’s defensive organisation kept the Spanish giants from entering their penalty area with ease, forcing Madrid to rely on distance shooting. ............

They started the second half brightly, but their resistance was eventually broken by a moment of quality. A well-taken goal from rising talent Gonzalo Garcia finally beat the outstanding Di Gregorio, giving Madrid a slender but decisive lead. ............

Despite the result, Juventus can take positives from their performance. Their earlier victories over Al Ain and Wydad may have given cause for optimism, but this encounter highlighted the gap that still exists when facing Europe’s elite sides. Even so, the 1-0 defeat was a respectable showing, and Juventus demonstrated tactical discipline, commitment and flashes of promise.

The Bianconeri leave the competition with pride intact and valuable lessons gained from this hard-fought contest against one of Europe’s strongest teams.

Manuel Locatelli feels ‘the only game we really played badly was against Manchester City’ in the Club World Cup, as they were eliminated in a tight 1-0 result by Real Madrid.

The Bianconeri knew they had a difficult draw after finishing runners-up in their group to Manchester City, but it was only a slender 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid in Miami. ............

“I think today we gave our all, even against a very strong opponent, showed great team spirit. They managed to get a goal and we didn’t, it’s a pity, but the only game in this tournament where we really played badly was against Manchester City,” Locatelli said.

“We are Juventus and therefore had hoped to progress in the competition, but this is the way it went. Juve must never be happy if we go out, but we gave our all and had the right attitude, whereas against Manchester City we were too sluggish and allowed them to control the game.” ............

“It has been a long and intense campaign, we are tired, now we need to recharge the batteries and try to restart with more energy.” ............

“It is not the time to think about next season, we just need to go spend some time with our families and recharge those batteries,” concluded Locatelli.

Igor Tudor insists Juventus had ’10 players asking to come off’ with fitness problems during the 1-0 Club World Cup defeat to Real Madrid, but saw a ‘different strategy’ from his squad.

It was a hard-fought match in Miami and was eventually decided by a free header from Gonzalo Garcia on the Trent Alexander-Arnold cross from the right.

Goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio kept his men in it to the last minute thanks to some extraordinary saves. ............

“I have to congratulate the lads, because they stuck to the game plan we had and followed the strategy. They gave their all in the circumstances, at the end there were 10 players asking to come off” Tudor said. ............

“Yildiz was stretching, we were afraid he would hurt himself, but others were in a similar situation. There was a slot, I wanted to make more attacking changes, but Frank (Conceicao) was hurt and I was afraid we’d be down to 10 men.” ............

Juventus bow out of the Club World Cup after two wins and two defeats, but it was an improvement on the performance against Manchester City, which was a humiliating 5-2 loss.

“We went to school against two teams of the highest level,” added Tudor.

“It’s valuable to compare where we are with these teams and learn going forward. We prepared a very different strategy against Real Madrid and it was also a different context, as the City game didn’t count, whereas this was a knockout tie.

“You don’t know when Real Madrid are more dangerous, is it when they pass it around, or go on the counter? We had a few scoring opportunities too, I congratulated the lads, and we build from here.” ............

“This is not the moment to answer these questions. We will rest now and then prepare for the next season. Let us all have a good vacation now,” smiled the coach.

Juventus Player Ratings vs Real Madrid: Miraculous Di Gregorio

Real Madrid 1-0 Juventus: Trent Alexander-Arnold sets up Garcia winner as Real beat Juventus - BBC Sport

 ............

Juventus enjoyed a better start to the game. Yet, Randal Kolo Muani and Kenan Yildiz didn’t have enough luck to open the scoring. Los Blancos bounced back after a slow opening, with Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham forcing two outstanding saves from Michele Di Gregorio.

Real Madrid opened the scoring early in the second half through Garica’s towering header and managed to hold onto their narrow lead until the final whistle. Without further ado, let’s look at our player ratings.

Juventus (3-4-3)

Michele Di Gregorio – 9/10

His standout performance between the sticks was the only reason Juventus lost via a single-goal margin. Probably the best showing from a goalkeeper at the tournament!

Pierre Kalulu – 6/10

Though he improved after a disastrous display against Man City, the French defender often struggled to cope with Vinicius Junior’s devastating pace.

Daniele Rugani – 6/10

Handed an unexpected chance to start, Rugani offered a decent performance, though Garcia slipped his mark to score the winning goal.

Lloyd Kelly – 5/10

 ............

Andrea Cambiaso – 6/10

 ............

Khephren Thuram – 5/10

The Frenchman always seemed one step behind his rivals, resulting in Real Madrid’s territorial dominance. Occasional flashes of quality weren’t enough to mask his mediocre showing.

Manuel Locatelli – 4/10

Like his midfield colleague, Locatelli wasn’t up to the tempo, often losing out in duels and failing to dictate the rhythm.

Alberto Costa – 4/10

 ............

Francisco Conceicao – 5/10

Virtually invisible throughout the opening hour of play, the diminutive winger was well below his high standard, never putting Real Madrid’s backline to the test.

Kenan Yildiz – 6/10

Despite being Juventus’ liveliest performer this evening, the Turkish starlet couldn’t make the difference. It’s a shame his thunderbolt didn’t hit the target early on.

Randal Kolo Muani – 5/10

Who knows how the game would’ve gone had he had more composure in that fateful eighth minute? Vanished from the game afterward.

Substitutes

Nicolas Gonzalez – 6/10

Filip Kostic – 4/10

Teun Koopmeiners – 6/10

Federico Gatti – N/A

Weston McKennie – N/A

Juventus 0 - Real Madrid 1: Initial reaction and random observations

The Spanish giants eliminate Igor Tudor’s squad from the Club World Cup thanks to a dominant second-half showing.

Real Madrid CF v Juventus FC: Round Of 16 - FIFA Club World Cup 2025

There was a point in the first half on Tuesday afternoon when you could see things start to click for Real Madrid. After Juventus gave the Spanish giants a couple of early scares, the later stages of the opening 45 minutes saw Real Madrid start to kick into gear. And it didn’t stop come the second half, either, with Juve having to fight off wave after wave of pressure. ............

Despite Di Gregorio heroics time and time again against Real Madrid, it wasn’t enough to fully keep one of the most talented teams in the world off the scoreboard. There was just one blemish in the 1-0 loss to Real Madrid — and it wasn’t even on Di Gregorio, as one of the most surprising performers thus far at the Club World Cup for Xabi Alonso, 21-year-old striker Gonzalo Garcia, was able to finish a wide-open header that proved to be the difference in Juventus’ 1-0 loss at Hard Rock Stadium. With the loss, it spells the end of Juve’s stay in the United States this summer, with plenty of questions remained to be answered coming out of the Club World Cup and where Tudor takes this team from here. ............

Let’s make no mistake about it, though: Without the effort in goal from Di Gregorio against Real Madrid, the final score would have looked more like what we saw last week against Manchester City. It would have been a blowout or something close to it — something that would have truly been a massive blow knowing what happened less than a week earlier against City.

Thankfully, Di Gregorio had what will surely go down as one of the best performances of his career. He made 10 saves — many of them of the high-quality variety, if not world class. Time and time again, Real Madrid launched something at the Juventus goal only for Di Gregorio to fly to his right or dive to his left to stop a shot. ............

Juventus had their chances to strike in the first half — most notably through Randal Kolo Muani and Kenan Yildiz — but couldn’t convert to give them the early lead. It proved costly even though Real Madrid’s goal didn’t come until the 54th minute. You had to figure that Juve’s opportunities would be somewhat limited even with Kolo Muani and Yildiz back in the starting lineup, so taking advantage of those had to be crucial if they wanted to even sniff the Club World Cup quarterfinals.

Unfortunately, they didn’t come about. And the more talented team took advantage of that. ............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • I sure hope Di Gregorio gets as much room as he wants on the flight back to Turin. He deserves to stretch out and rest as much as anybody after that kind of performance.
  • Seriously, though ... some of those saves were just so good.
  • And he nearly got a hand to Garcia’s goal, too. That would have just been the cherry on top if he were somehow able to tip that ball over the bar and keep Real Madrid scoreless.
  • Still, even with that goal, the 9.3 rating on Sofasore that Di Gregorio has received feels completely justified. Dude was far and away the biggest reason why it was only a 1-0 loss. ............
  • Fede Valverde, what a player.
  • Dean Huijsen, also a pretty good player. Somebody should have picked him up on the cheap when he was a teenager in Spain. Ah well. ............
  • Considering he had not started a game in nearly two months, I feel safe in saying that was a pretty good showing from Daniele Rugani in the center of Juve’s defense. Hopefully this is just another sign that he can be a useful player off the bench for this team — especially if they’re going to use a back three and only a back three. ............
  • The biggest thing that turned things for Real Madrid? Putting multiple defenders on Yildiz every chance they got and basically forcing Juventus to try and go through another one of their limited creative outlets. Once that change was made, Juve barely had an answer going forward.
  • Juventus’ first sub of the day was Filip Kostic.
  • Real Madrid’s first sub of the day was Kylian Mbappe.
  • I think that says all you need to say about the gap in quality between the two squads.
  • Still thinking about that missed chance from Kolo Muani. Man of man, you gotta finish those when you get them — especially against an opponent like Real Madrid. ............
  • Considering this was close but not completely Real Madrid’s starting lineup, I can’t help but wonder how many Juve players that Tudor played on Tuesday actually get into that side. It’s probably Yildiz ... and who else? I really don’t know because Madrid’s squad is just so much better than Juve’s currently is.
  • I sure hope the next game Juventus plays has Bremer in defense. That would be nice.
  • The possession numbers didn’t really change from the first half to the second, but it sure did feel like Real Madrid had so much more of the ball coming out of halftime. I guess that’s what happens when your goalkeeper has to make big save after big save with no end in sight. ............
  • So that ends Juventus’ stay at the Club World Cup, a tournament in which things have been far from perfect on the whole. We’ll have more to say about it over the next handful of days, but it’s hard to say it was a success when Juve beat the two clubs they should have beaten and then lose to the two clubs they were underdogs against. It’s just ... yeah, hard to say.
