Juventus back in for Lazio's Stephan Lichtsteiner

The Switzerland international has again caught the attention of Juve

after a strong season with the capital club.

May 27, 2011

Struggling Serie A giants Juventus have not given up on Lazio defender Stephan Lichtsteiner, and they are ready to make another move for the Switzerland international this summer, Tuttosport reports.

The Turin outfit have long been linked with a move for the right-back, but their interest has cooled in the past few months.

Nevertheless, general director Giuseppe Marotta has earmarked the 27-year-old as the solution to Juve's problems at the back and is ready to make an offer for the stopper.

The full-back won't be available on the cheap, though, as Lazio have set a

Juventus closing in on Lazio's Stephan Lichtsteiner

The Turin giants are believed to be close to signing the Switzerland international

as Lazio have already found a replacement.

Jun 9, 2011

Serie A outfit Juventus appear to be one step closer to signing Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner from fellow Italian outfit Lazio, as the Rome club are close to signing a replacement for the full-back, Tuttosport reports.

Lazio are believed to be on the verge of securing the services of Abdoulay Konko from Genoa and could accept an offer for Lichtsteiner as soon as they have completed the transfer of the former Sevilla stopper.

Juve have long been in the market for a new right-back and they have reportedly earmarked Lichtsteiner as the top candidate. Transfer talks started in the beginning of June, but have so far not led to an agreement because of the capital club's

Juventus to announce signing of Lichtsteiner in the next 48 hours

Italian reports claim the Swiss right-back should be a Juve player within

the next couple of days, bringing an end to weeks of speculation about his future.

Jun 12, 2011

Juventus are set to officially announce the transfer of Lazio right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner before Wednesday, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.

The Switzerland international's agent, Federico Pastorello, had already hinted on Thursday that a deal was close to completion, after claiming the two clubs had come to an agreement for the 27-year-old.

There has so far been no confirmation on the figure involved in the transfer, but reports in Italy suggest that it will not reach the

Why Lichtsteiner is the man to end

Juventus' five-year full-back nightmare

The right-back should prove to be an astute purchase by under-fire Giuseppe Marotta,

and will more than complement his Swiss counterpart Reto Ziegler on the opposing flank.

Jun 28, 2011

Four trophyless campaigns, five coaches, numerous signings and hundreds of millions of Euros later, Juventus have remained without any worthy replacements for their once glittering array of full-backs.

This summer, though, they appear to have finally captured a player who fits the bill.

In the season preceding Calciopoli, then-coach Fabio Capello had World Cup winners Gianluca Zambrotta and Lilian Thuram at his disposal, and the duo would eventually depart for Barcelona after a trophy-laden spell in Turin. Their back-up options, Federico Balzaretti, Alessandro Birindelli and Gianluca Pessotto, were also several classes above the current crop.

Since then, Juve have decided to ignore these areas of the field, opting to allocate very little of their budget on their backline and instead sign cheaper, lower-quality alternatives in the hope of striking lucky - from the likes of failed Bosman arrivals Zdenek Grygera and Hasan Salihamidzic to the hugely underwhelming loanees Armand Traore and Marco Motta. Even when it appeared they had groomed a potential successor in the form of Domenico Criscito, he was criminally underused, forcing him to look elsewhere to ply his trade.

However, with the capture of Stephan Lichtsteiner, after a drawn-out pursuit of the player whose attacking verve has gained many admirers for both club and country, Juve have landed a player who possesses impressive pedigree, and has proven himself to be more than capable from a defensive perspective.

After his exploits with Lille, where he starred in Claude Puel's promising young outfit - alongside the likes of Mathieu Bodmer, Jean Makoun, Michel Bastos and Peter Odemwingie in his debut season - the Swiss international earned a move to Lazio after Euro 2008, with the capital giants beating off strong interest for his signature.

Since arriving at the Stadio Olimpico, Lichtsteiner has gone from strength to strength, first under the guidance of Delio Rossi, then, most recently, for Edy Reja. The former had initially overseen the departure of fan favourite Valon Behrami to West Ham, but it didn't take long for Lazio's support to warm to their new arrival, thanks to his energetic and committed displays which have given the Rome club another dimension in their forward play.

Aleksandar Kolarov always seemed to overshadow him during their stint together in Rome, as highlighted by his big-money transfer to Manchester City, but Lichtsteiner remained a dependable and consistent servant, albeit without the Serb's explosive left-foot.

The 27-year-old's enthusiasm for the cause is sure to gain him many fans in his new surroundings, and could even prove to be the perfect signing for the development of second-choice full backs Motta and Paolo De Ceglie, as they will now have better quality competition to aspire to match.

New boss Antonio Conte is an advocate of attacking football, with his wide players utilised to great effect in a 4-2-4 formation. The signing of Reto Ziegler gave fans a glimpse of their new direction, and Lichtsteiner's inclusion will only further emphasise this philosophy as both are renowned for their lung-bursting runs down the flanks, whilst proving to be a prolific source of assists.

There may be a degree of malcontent from a minority, as Lichtsteiner's signature all but ends the pursuit for Hoffenheim full-back Andreas Beck, who was the first choice of many supporters. However, this is the first time in years that a significant part of the budget has been spent on a wide defender, a sign of intent from the club's owners, Exor, and also of a better understanding from the management as to what is needed to improve the team.

All in all, credit should be given to general director Giuseppe Marotta, not just if the stopper performs to his potential, but also for successfully negotiating a knock-down price of around

Lichtsteiner - Juventus have addressed their full back problems

The italian giants have made moves to address the chronic issue in the Italian game,

which has proven a particular ailment for the bianconeri over the past 12 months.

Jul 11, 2011

It's not unusual for even the biggest of clubs to find fault with an area of their first-team squad, indeed it's a natural course of action for any team looking to stay at the top to be on the lookout for ways to improve. But Italy's Juventus found themselves in a state of flux over the very same issue at one time or another last season. The traditional powerhouse struggled to answer questions asked of their full-backs during the course of 2010-11 and they have made moves on the market to resolve the problem ahead of the new Serie A campaign.

Whether looking for answers within Italy, across Europe, or indeed by scouring the world, Juve have managed to plug gaps in the positions causing consternation to many clubs across the peninsula.

The Bianconeri were without doubt the most guilty in Italy in terms of their inability to plug the gaps in their defensive flanks last season as a series of short term fixes fell short of what was required.

Marco Motta's big-money loan deal proved troublesome from day one, giving Zdenek Grygera the chance to play more games than Luigi Del Neri would have originally expected. This allowed youngster Frederik Sorensen to jump the queue for the first-team by switching from his more familiar centre-back slot. Even Hasan Salihamidzic got another look-in at right-back.

At left-back there were even more players tried out. Fabio Grosso proved that the passing of time has treated him badly, but Paolo De Ceglie was cut down only by a nasty knee injury. After that blow, Juve barely recovered defensively. Armand Traore had one or two good games, but that was the best review that could be given of his loan spell as Giorgio Chiellini was forced to shift across from centre-back and even right-winger Simone Pepe tried out on the left of defence at one point.

SOLUTION

A Swiss double has been the favoured course of action at Vinovo as Stephan Lichtsteiner was signed from Lazio for just under

Juventus have the quality to return to Champions League - Lichtsteiner

The new signing is brimming with confidence ahead of the new season and expects his club

to be back among Europe's elite sooner rather than later.

Jul 11, 2011

New Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner has voiced his opinion that the Turin giants have what it takes to qualify for Champions League football again in the season ahead.

Juve only finished seventh in the Serie A table last term, but the full-back is determined to do better in 2011-12 and underlined his ambition to succeed with his new club.

"This team has quality, if we work well we have a great opportunity to get back into the Champions League. I had an enjoyable experience in Rome, but Juventus are Juventus; the team has a rich history. It

Juventus are destined for great things - Stephan Lichtsteiner

Antonio Conte's men are preparing ahead of the weekend round of action in Italy

and the former Lazio defender is feeling confident.

Oct 20, 2011

Juventus full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner believes the club are in for a success-filled season in Serie A as he looks ahead to their next match at home against Genoa.

The league leaders failed to breach Chievo's backline last weekend and had to be content with a 0-0 stalemate in Verona and Lichtsteiner believes Juve need to be at their best in the coming weeks.

"We have difficult games coming up [Genoa, Fiorentina, Inter and Napoli] and so we cannot really speak about the Scudetto now," Lichtsteiner told Sky Sport Italia.

"But if we can continue along this path then I am sure we will achieve great things."

Genoa have failed to pick up a win in their past three games, however, Lichtsteiner has warned his team-mates not to take Alberto Malesani's men lightly on Saturday.

"We will have to be careful against Genoa as they have good strikers, but we are preparing well and I have faith," concluded the defender.

Juventus have not struggled against smaller sides - Lichtsteiner

The Switzerland international has voiced his opinion that the Turin side deserved to win

against Bologna and Chievo and were simply unlucky not to bag the full three points.

Oct 21, 2011

Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner insists that the Turin giants have not struggled against smaller teams this campaign, but feels they were just unlucky not to win their games against them.

The Serie A table toppers were held to draws by Catania, Bologna and Chievo in their first six matches, but the Swiss full-back is of the opinion that they deserved the full three points in at least two of those meetings.

"I disagree with all the people who say that we struggle against smaller teams," Lichtsteiner told Sky Sport Italia.

"We created a lot of chances against Bologna and Chievo and deserved to win both games in my opinion. The only thing that was missing in those matches was a goal.

"Obviously, it's never going to be easy against the lesser teams as they often defend with 11 men behind the ball."

‘Lichtsteiner one of the best’

Dec 16, 2011

Moreno Torricelli has crowned Juventus’ Stephan Lichtsteiner as one of the finest right-backs presently in the game.

The Swiss international joined the Old Lady in the summer from Lazio for €10m and he’s been an ever-present in the club’s Serie A starting XI since.

“Lichtsteiner is doing very well,” Torricelli, himself a former full-back in Turin, told Radio Mana Mana. “He is demonstrating to everyone just how good a player he actually is.

“Lichtsteiner, in my opinion, is one of the best full-backs in Europe and I hope he doesn’t stop performing so well.”

Torricelli spent six years at Juventus where he played in Marcello Lippi’s mythical side alongside present Juve boss Antonio Conte.

“There are similarities between this team and the Juventus I played in,” added the former Fiorentina man.

“They play with the same velocity, high pressing and the squad is very similar. This is an excellent team.

“Antonio is charismatic, he was an excellent captain who is pays close attention to every detail. His DNA is Bianconero.”

Stephan Lichtsteiner: The Right Man For The Job

June 2, 2012

Lichsteiner-celebrates-his-goal-v-Parma.jpg

The new Juventus Stadium had seen just fifteen minutes of official match play when, having had his own route to goal blocked by not one but two opposing players, Andrea Pirlo checked his run and almost without looking clipped a ball over the top of the static Parma backline. Floated perfectly, it dropped to the feet of Stephan Lichtsteiner who had cut in unnoticed from his position on the right. He controlled the ball with one foot before slotting past the helpless Antonio Mirante with the other, the ball settling into the back of the visitor’s goal. Their new home had its first competitive goal and Juventus had not only found a new hero but, finally, a quality right-back to fill the team’s most long-standing void.

Antonio Conte rightly deserves all the plaudits he has received for steering the club he captained with such distinction to the Serie A title in his debut season on the Bianconeri bench. Similarly, Pirlo’s immaculate passing, thoughtful probing and sublime vision undoubtedly made him the side’s most outstanding performer on the field. During the campaign however, the Switzerland international was perhaps the one other player whose arrival could match that of the 2006 World Cup winner in terms of significance and importance to a team which improved greatly thanks to his presence.

Since their enforced relegation six years ago, a seemingly endless stream of poor performers have attempted to fill the right-back slot so ably covered by the accomplished Lilian Thuram prior to the fallout of the Calciopoli scandal. Sure, Alessandro Birindelli was a loyal and perfectly serviceable option in the second division but, after returning to the top flight in 2007, Jonathan Zebina, Zdeněk Grygera, Olof Mellberg and Marco Motta all failed to reach anything like the required standard while Martín Cáceres’ biggest admirers would admit the rawness of his game during his first tour of duty with the Turin club.

Even the signing of Lichtsteiner – brought from Lazio for a significant sum of €10 million in late June last year – was, prior to his arrival, viewed something of a gamble. Here was a player considered solid but temperamental and far better suited to a wing-back role rather than being pressed into service as an orthodox full-back. He had collected no fewer than twenty yellow cards in ninety league appearances for the Biancocelesti and was involved in a number of memorable spats, none more so than with Christian Panucci in the Rome derby in which he also scored the winning goal.

He enjoyed a relatively successful three year spell in the Italian capital, netting a shootout penalty in their 2009 Italian Cup Final win over Sampdoria and also helping Lazio defeat Inter in the Super Cup that same year. Yet, as has happened with almost every signing from last summer, moving to Juventus has seen the Swiss international elevate his game to a higher level than any previous point in his career.

His-masters-voice.jpg

As we saw on that sunny September afternoon, life in Turin would begin in the best possible fashion as he netted that historic opening goal, a strike which would also mark the beginning of a wonderful understanding with Pirlo. It became a huge weapon for Conte’s men throughout the campaign and the move would be repeated countless times, culminating in many dangerous attacks and leading to his only other goal, a header in January’s win at Atalanta.

He added two assists and completed 87% of his 1575 pass attempts making him the seventh best passer at the club but it was undoubtedly his defensive attributes which were most vital to the team. Lichtsteiner made 64 tackles, 91 clearances, 27 interceptions and blocked seven shots in 34 league games and, while the former Lille man was dribbled past by opposition players seventeen times, he was able to recover his position many times thanks to his incredible stamina and pace.

What is even more interesting however has been the way he impressed so greatly as part of a back four which made his performances as a wing-back – where he shone at Lazio – seem far more average. The popular stat based website WhoScored.com gave him an average of 7.04 in his 24 games as a right-back but that dropped to 6.52 across the ten matches he was deployed on the right of a five man midfield.

Looking for reasons for that difference in performance it is important to note that Conte has largely utilised the 3-5-2 against Serie A’s tougher sides. Indeed, among those ten games Lichtsteiner featured in that role are two matches against each of Roma, Napoli and Udinese as well as one against Milan, all among the Old Lady’s rivals at the top end of the league table at the end of the season.

Added to that is his position on the field and those taken by team mates in each different shape. As part of the midfield Lichtsteiner would usually occupy the flank alone, often lining up against both the opposition full-back and a covering midfielder. This would make space hard to find, a by-product of better quality defenders and was exacerbated by him being further forward, increasingly condensing the field and cut down on opportunities to break free from his marker.

In contrast, playing in a 4-3-3 not only meant his direct opponent would be a midfielder – far more likely to be caught out of position than a natural defender – and with a wide player such as Simone Pepe or Emmanuele Giaccherini also occupying the full-back on the Juventus right. He would also have room to run into, the player often referred to by the self-explanatory ‘lo Swiss Express’ moniker allowed to build up a head of steam before receiving the ball. It may perhaps be an overly simplistic way of looking at his efforts, but it is no surprise that both his goals – and his two assists – all came in games he played as part of a back four.

Fatigue would also play its part with Lichtsteiner looking increasingly tired as the season drew towards a triumphant conclusion for la vecchia Signora and indeed he played more minutes than all but four other outfield players at the club. He was replaced after just 25 minutes of the decisive game against Cagliari due to injury, marking one of only five occasions in which he would fail to complete the full ninety minutes during a draining campaign.

The mental and physical energy required of all the players as Juventus fought, not only to secure the Serie A title but also maintain their unbeaten run, cannot be understated and perhaps only Arturo Vidal and Simone Pepe would embody that incredible drive more than the 28 year old. He may be widely known as ‘Forrest Gump’ but all that truly matters is that Juventus can finally call on a player who displays the consistency and talent befitting a club that has been home to some of world football’s best since the birth of his position. His name is Stephan Lichtsteiner and he is, at last, the right right-back.

Everyone at Juventus is behind Conte, Pepe and Bonucci, says Lichtsteiner

The right-back, who played in Saturday's 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin, insists everyone

at the club retains their full support in the trio, who have been implicated in Scommessopoli.

Jul 28, 2012

Stephan Lichtsteiner has asserted that Juventus are fully behind Antonio Conte, Leonardo Bonucci and Simone Pepe, who are currently under investigation for their alleged involvement in the Scommessopoli scandal.

The Bianconeri coach, along with the centre-back and winger, form part of the 44 players and coaches targeted by FIGC prosecutor Stefano Palazzi.

Conte and Pepe stand accused of failing to report instances of match-fixing, while Bonucci has been charged with sporting fraud.

However, Juve president Andrea Agnelli vowed to stand by the trio, and the Swiss full-back is the latest to pledge his support.

"Juve are a big family and we are all with the coach, Leo [bonucci] Simone [Pepe] and the other staff involved," Lichtsteiner said after the Old Lady's 2-0 victory over Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

"They are excellent professionals and have all of our support in this matter."

Reflecting on the friendly success in the German capital, Lichtsteiner, who started the match, noted: "It was a good test and I am satisfied with my performance and that of the team.

"I like to try other positions and it is useful for the team to have more solutions."

Chelsea identify Lichtsteiner

Aug 10, 2012

Reports in England suggest that Chelsea are monitoring Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner as a possible transfer target this summer.

The Swiss full-back is reportedly an option being considered by the London club as they look to improve their defensive options.

The Daily Mirror believe that Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo is interested in the 28-year-old if their interest in Marseille’s Cesar Azpilicueta fails to materialise.

However, any move is likely to be met with resistance from the Bianconeri, in light of Martin Caceres’ injury ruling him out for at least six weeks and Lichtsteiner having recently impressed in pre-season in a new role of centre-back.

Lichtsteiner 'interested' in PSG

Aug 17, 2012

Paris Saint-Germain are raiding Serie A again, as Stephan Lichtsteiner’s entourage are quoted as saying the Juventus star is “interested” in a move.

Carlo Ancelotti’s club has already taken Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Ezequiel Lavezzi this summer.

According to Calciomercato.it, Juve would be willing to listen to an offer of €15m for their right-back.

“Stephan arrived in Italy from Lille, but when he joined Lazio there had already been a concrete interest from PSG and we spoke to them, but decided to try out a new experience in a different league,” said an unnamed member of Lichtsteiner’s entourage.

“Obviously PSG are a very interesting club with an excellent structure. They have an important project, a great Coach like Ancelotti and a great technical director in Leonardo. It would be an honour for Stephan to play for Ancelotti.

“At the same time he is very happy in Turin. The Bianconeri also have an important project for the future and he is part of it, so there’d be no real reason to leave Juventus.

“The decision is down to Juventus. If they decide to sell Stephan, then obviously he would be interested in joining PSG.

“The certain thing is that the player wants to know his future in the next four or five days, because he is very ambitious and wants to prepare as best as possible for next season.”

Swiss right-back Lichtsteiner has also been linked with Chelsea.

“The situation is different, as I can confirm they know the player very well and really want him, but the Londoners might not want to spend that much money for a right-back.”

Ancelotti: 'PSG don't want Lichtsteiner'

Aug 18, 2012

Carlo Ancelotti insists it’s “not remotely true” that PSG are making a bid for Juventus right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner.

The reports emerged last night with quotes from an unnamed member of Swiss international Lichtsteiner’s entourage.

“It is not remotely true that we are interested in Lichtsteiner,” replied Paris Saint-Germain manager Ancelotti.

“We do want a right-back, but we are looking for a Frenchman for that role.”

This would also seem to rule out another rumoured target for PSG, Inter’s Brazilian star Douglas Maicon.

Ancelotti: PSG are not interested in Lichtsteiner or Debuchy

The 53-year-old trainer has revealed that his team are not looking

into the possibility of acquiring either of the internationals.

Aug 18, 2012

Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that the club are not interested in signing Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus, and has also ruled out a move for Lille full-back Mathieu Debuchy.

The French capital club were expected to announce the arrival of veteran Anthony Reveillere from Lyon last week, but the deal has reportedly fallen through.

These developments have reportedly rekindled PSG's interest in the Juventus right-back, but Ancelotti has moved to squash such claims and insisted that Lichtsteiner is not in PSG's plans.

"It is not remotely true that we are interested in Lichtsteiner," he said in a press conference on the eve of their trip to Ajaccio on Friday. "We do want a right-back, but we are looking for a Frenchman for that role."

"It definitely will not be Debuchy however, who is a player of Lille."

Lichtsteiner set for Juve talks

Aug 20, 2012

Juventus will reportedly hold talks with the agent of Stephan Lichtsteiner this week about Paris Saint-Germain’s interest in him.

Although PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that the right-back is not one of their targets, the transfer rumour mill continues to link the defender with the French outfit.

It is being claimed that Juventus director general Beppe Marotta will meet with the Swiss international’s representative towards the end of the week to discuss their options.

The Old Lady now value the former Lazio player, signed at a cost of €10.5m last summer, at around €15m.

Paris SG are also said to be willing to offer the stopper a four-year deal worth €4m a campaign – around double his current salary.

The Turin giants could consider a sale given the presence of Martin Caceres, Simone Pepe and Mauricio Isla in their squad given that they can all play on the right in a 4-3-3 or 3-5-2 system.

Paris Saint-Germain prepare €18m offer for Lichtsteiner

The Swiss wing-back has caught the attention of the Ligue 1 giants with his consistent performances

last term, and the Old Lady face a tough choice in whether to sell or not.

Aug 22, 2012

Paris Saint-Germain are ready to make an €18 million offer for Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner, Goal.com understands.

The Ligue 1 giants are keen to add a new right-back to their squad, and had initially earmarked Anthony Reveillere as the perfect candidate.

However, the right-back failed a medical at PSG, prompting the Champions League hopefuls to turn their attentions elsewhere, and they have now set their sights on Lichtsteiner.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti recently denied that the Parisians are interested in signing the Switzerland international, but they are now looking into the possibilities of luring Lichtsteiner away from his current club after all.

The 28-year-old has developed into a key player at Juventus since joining them from Lazio in the summer of 2011, but the Old Lady could be tempted to cash in on the stopper if a good-enough offer comes in.

PSG believe that a bid in the region of €18m will be enough to convince Juve to let go of the right-back, and the French giants are expected to make a formal offer shortly.

Juventus already brought in Mauricio Isla from Udinese earlier this summer as an alternative to Lichsteiner, while Martin Caceres could also feature as right-back in a 4-3-3 or on the right side of a five-man midfield in a 3-5-2 formation.

Lichtsteiner: There is absolutely no reason to leave Juventus

The wing-back has made it clear that he is very pleased with the conditions

at the Bianconeri, and that a transfer is not an option for him.

Sep 8, 2012

Stephan Lichtsteiner has stressed that he is very happy with life at Juventus and has no intention of leaving the Serie A champions any time soon.

The Switzerland international was being linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer, but he feels the conditions at his current club are too good to pass up.

"The simple truth is that we [players] don't change clubs as easily as some people seem to think. Juventus are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I feel very well here," the right-back said to Le Matin.

"I feel loved at the club and we will be playing Champions League football again this term. We're challenging for all trophies. There's no other place where I could find this.

"All this has really strengthened my desire to stay here. I have absolutely no reason to leave.

"And to be honest, I have not received any extraordinary offers."

Lichtsteiner is under contract with Juve until June 2015.
