However, it will be a similar story for those that were happy to see the 48-year-old relieved of his managerial duties in January 2014, given the Old Lady’s poor start to Serie A this term. Somewhat surprisingly, given their own difficulties to adapt to the ideas of new coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, Milan go into the match above the reigning champions – albeit with just two points and one place separating the pair. After Antonio Conte’s sudden exit, Allegri arrived in Turin with pre-season underway – just six months after his Rossoneri sacking – and looked a risky appointment by the Bianconeri. Yet, the Italian not only maintained their Serie A dominance but captured a first Coppa Italia in 20 years and led the club to the Champions League final for the first time since 2003. With Juventus on a run of three consecutive Scudetti, many saw this as the ex-Cagliari coach simply overseeing an already well-oiled machine, particularly given the talent inherited from Conte. It is an argument that was also aimed at Allegri with reference to his debut season in Milan, where a squad of comparable ability was quickly supplemented with the goalscoring prowess of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the trickery of Robinho. What some forget, is that despite the know-how of Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo, et al the Rossoneri were trophyless since collecting the FIFA World Club Cup in 2007 and had not triumphed domestically since 2003. However, similar to the Bianconeri’s recent dip in form, the wheels started to come off at Milan when the club allowed a number of senior, or vital, components of the side depart without adequate replacements coming in. In the space of just one transfer window, out went Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, along with the experience of Gattuso, Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf and several others. Whilst Allegri still managed to steer them to a creditable third place, the Italian tactician could not hide the squad’s inadequacies the following season and departed with them in 11th position. With Juventus, the Milanisti may finally recognise Allegri’s ‘achievements’ with such an underwhelming group of players that he was forced to work with during those final 6-12 months at the club. Along with an exhausting campaign last season, the Bianconeri’s recent troubles have clearly been in some part due to the summer departures of Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Carlos Tevez, but the significant investment in replacing them is starting to be seen. The way in which the Italian has galvanised a tired group in transition to not only rise through the Serie A rankings but also remain unbeaten in a tough Champions League group deserves plenty of praise. In Turin on Saturday, do not be surprised if the Rossoneri fans get to witness firsthand the coaches tactical acumen and brush aside the challenge of Mihajlovic’s new look Milan, and continues their ascent towards a fifth consecutive Serie A title.
