Nov 2, 2015 When Sami Khedira suffered a strained calf barely ten minutes into the Derby Della Mole between Juventus and Torino on Saturday, Bianconeri coach Massimiliano Allegri could have made the safe choice. Indeed, most coaches in his situation would have preferred a like-for-like switch. Stefano Sturaro and Mario Lemina were both on the bench and perfectly capable of playing in Khedira’s box-to-box midfielder role. Either of them would have been the more practical option for filling the void left by the German’s departure. Instead, Allegri took advantage of what should have been a tough situation and changed the look of his Juventus team. To start the match he had the team laid out in a 4-3-1-2 formation with Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala sitting up top and Hernanes just behind them in a creative role. In his time on the pitch, Khedira operated just ahead of Claudio Marchisio in central midfield, in theory, meant to trade runs forward with Paul Pogba. To his considerable credit, Allegri realized early on that he’d failed to find neither his team’s best shape nor his best eleven. It is difficult to derive much meaning from ten minutes of football, but in the opening stages against Torino it was clear that Juventus would struggle to assert itself if they continued to play as they were. Torino fielded a familiar tactical strategy, one they had used in each of their previous ten Serie A matches; a 3-5-2 built around pressing high up the pitch and quick transitions. Allegri set out to counter that style by crowding the midfield and thus making it difficult for Torino to play through the center of the pitch. In the opening minutes of play, most of the passes Torino executed came within their own third, as the three centre-backs rotated the ball back and forth among themselves as almost every available route to midfield was blocked by a Juventus player. The problem was Torino’s shape, specifically when Juventus were in possession. Morata and Dybala paired up reasonably well going forward, but in the end each and every one of their attacks was always going to have to deal with the fact that Torino’s defence would have an extra man waiting to cut off outlet passes and frustrate link-up play. Juventus were playing right into Torino’s plans by fielding a narrow attack tipped by two strikers. So when Khedira’s calf gave way, Allegri jumped at the opportunity fate had afforded. Stefano Sturaro and Mario Lemina stayed on the bench and instead Juan Cuadrado came into the game. The on-loan Chelsea winger perched himself wide on the right while Morata shifted left, leaving Dybala as the sole striker. Hernanes dropped deeper into the midfield, taking over Marchisio’s dynamic role as the Italian moved up to fill Khedira’s half of the pivot with Pogba. Juventus were now playing in a 4-3-3. Cuadrado himself proved to be the most decisive result of this switch. He assisted Pogba’s stunning opener eight minutes after he came on and then scored in the last minute of the match to give Juventus a 2-1 win over their local rivals. There was more than Cuadrado’s individual genius going on here, however. Prior to Khedira’s injury, the game was even. Juventus and Torino were level at about 60 passes each and neither had mustered a shot. In the ten minutes following Khedira’s departure, Juventus doubled the number of passes Torino managed and had two shots on goal, one of which was Pogba’s stunning opener. Breaking any game down into ten-minute increments will produce this kind of lopsided story. On Saturday though, Juventus didn’t let up. Per WhoScored.com, by the final whistle they had managed 60% possession, outpassed Torino 541 to 356, outshot them 17-10 and won the game to secure an invaluable three points. Cuadrado might have carved his name into this match, but the victory came from Allegri’s recognition that Juventus needed more in their attacking third. Bringing Cuadrado in and moving Morata wide left stretched Torino’s three-man defence, leaving holes through which Juventus’ attack could more easily manoeuvre. Moreover, it left three men nominally marking one central striker – even though Pogba usually found himself forward too – meaning that at any given time one or more of those Torino defenders were superfluous. Were Torino coach Giampiero Ventura particularly brave, he might have countered Cuadrado’s introduction with a substitute of his own, bringing off one of the centre-backs in favor of an additional midfielder to break through Juventus’ lockdown. As it stood, however, Torino persisted and were regularly caught out as a result. Their own offense continued to stutter as Juventus’ only grew stronger. After Khedira’ substitution, Juventus managed 102 passes in Torino’s third. Il Toro managed a mere 42 such passes against Juventus. The scoreline might suggest a closer game, one in which Cuadrado was the savior, but in reality this was a masterclass in pragmatism from Allegri.

"I started with Hernanes as a trequartista and I knew it could be tricky because Torino are so clammed up without the ball. "At the moment we are playing every three days, there’s no time for players to recover, so we have to focus on guarantees and solidity. However, while the club will be pleased to have secured a victory, the performance was far from convincing, with the team keeping possession but doing little to fashion clear goal-scoring opportunities. Incapable of producing any real threat from set pieces and still susceptible to giving away free kicks from dangerous areas on the pitch, there is still so much for Massimiliano Allegri to do if he is to get the Old Lady back to winning ways. While Paul Pogba managed to open the scoring with a delightful goal that showed off his technique, it must be said that had Gianluigi Buffon not been as alert and as capable as he is, this could have well been a Toro victory. The Bianconeri were once again predictable going forward, lacking the necessary fluidity up front while Paulo Dybala was burdened with doing it all at the top. However, rather than focusing on the negatives, we should recognise the positive aspects of Juve's game, such as the growing impact of the midfield. Claudio Marchisio is slowly recovering his form, and while the subtle player has a way of simply blending in, his impact can never go unnoticed. His interesting passes, his perfect positioning -- it must be said the team missed his tactical intelligence when he was lost to injury. Alongside him, Pogba played an excellent game, and while consistency is perhaps too much to demand from a youngster, the occasions in which he performs, he dazzles. Still not one who can stretch a good display for a whole 90 minutes, he did manage a sensational goal and was the man who initiated several patterns of attacking play. Had Khedira been allowed to stay on the pitch, then perhaps Allegri would have benefitted from affording his midfield trio more time to adapt to one another and establish a rhythm. But in his place arrived Juan Cuadrado to change the shape from a 4-3-1-2 to a 4-3-3, which, as it turns out, seemed to create a more threatening Juve side. The Colombian is slowly learning how to channel his talent. While on occasion he can be guilty of slowing down play as he seeks to make the right move, against Torino he combined well with his teammates and terrorised his opponents with his quick movements, never forgetting to track back to aid the defence. Of course, it was the desire he displayed on the night that made the real difference and perhaps turned him into a real Bianconero. Scoring the winning goal with the final kick of the game, he wanted all three points and he desperately wanted to be on the score sheet. As long as he continues to show ambition and the willingness to sacrifice for his teammates, he will continue to grow into a champion. His arrival on to the pitch proved to be a blessing in disguise and incidentally brings up another point. While Allegri has regularly gotten his starting lineup wrong, tinkering and rotating too often, he does know how to rectify his errors and affect the game with his substitutions. Bringing on Cuadrado was perhaps an obvious choice, but the decision to bring on Alex Sandro in the final minutes of the game made a huge difference to the scoreline, as it was the Brazilian's brilliant assist that led to the winning goal. The more time Sandro is afforded on the pitch, the more he will develop into the man worthy of the hefty price tag Juventus paid for him. His offensive ability is the reason why he caught the eye of the Juve directors, and while the current identity crisis means the club needs experienced players to take to the pitch, the full-back is someone who, in the near future, should be slowly integrated into the starting lineup. With more consistency, he can regain his accuracy, delivering those perfectly placed passes and precise crosses into the box as he managed to do on Saturday. Moments like this will only increase the pressure on his already difficult mission of getting Juventus back on the right track. Speaking of which, bianconeri tifosi all around the world have been rather vociferous after the latest setback in Emilia-Romagna. Gathering together in angry mobs, with scythes and blazing torches lightening their way towards the headquarters of Juventus in Turin, they have been asking for Allegri’s head. Completely mental, if anyone is interested in a humble opinion. Had Allegri even led Juventus to a 3-0 defeat in the Derby della Mole, he would have still been the man to take the Old Lady out of these dark times. But patience is not a word that can be easily found in the – sometimes limited – vocabulary of football fans nowadays. Cuadrado could not have found a better moment to open his scoring account for Juventus. Doing an Andrea Pirlo and handing Juventus the victory against Torino in the last possible moment is surely enough to start appreciating the Colombian for his playing style that either goes haywire or becomes essential for the win. Much like it was said here. The Champions League anthem – a massive improvement from the hideous Serie A one – and Borussia Monchengladbach is up next for the Old Lady in three days’ time and it is just redundant to stress the importance of three more points. Allegri knows the game: win and the progress to the knock-out stages is pretty much secured. Lose and the angry, blood-thirsty mobs come back to life. Either way, there will be good football to watch and talk about. MATCH SUMMARY After some rather surprisingly uneventful first 10 minutes, the bomb dropped. Sami Khedira got injured playing a simple pass and was immediately replaced by Juan Cuadrado. The tifosi didn’t get to see any goal action whatsoever until the 20th minute but the long waiting was worth it. Dybala’s little dummy ensured Pogba received the ball at the edge of the box and after a great first touch, the Frenchman propelled the ball into the top corner past an idle Daniele Padelli – a superb goal reminiscent of the times Pogba used to produce something similar every fortnight. A couple of minutes after scoring the goal, Pogba was the victim of two killing challenges in the space of five seconds, first from Afriyie Acquah and then from Cesare Bovo. Both culprits were booked by referee Gianluca Rocchi and Pogba could count himself lucky to get away without an injury. On the half hour mark, Quagliarella missed the first good chance for Torino when he received a ball outside the area and, due to Leonardo Bonucci’s poor positioning, had plenty of time to control the ball and get a shot in but his volley went wide of Buffon’s goal. Dybala came close to doubling Juventus’ lead three minutes later but his shot from the edge of the 16-yard-box flew past the top corner at the far post. Two minutes before half time, Cristian Molinaro sent a ball in front of goal and Bonucci managed to get in front of Maxi Lopez to deny the Argentine what would have been an easy tap-in for a goal. The danger wasn’t immediately cleared away but Rocchi stopped the play for a foul on Andrea Barzagli. As the second half started, little would have predicted an early goal from Torino, but it came nonetheless. Bonucci gave away a foul outside the area and Daniele Baselli only hit the wall from the resulting free-kick. The ball bounced to Bovo and the defender sent a thunderous strike into the roof of the net, leaving Gianluigi Buffon little time to react. A few minutes later, Buffon produced a miraculous save to keep the sides level as he denied Kamil Glik’s header from point-blank range, following a corner kick. Bonucci was quick to clear the rebound away for another corner from which nothing dangerous resulted. Pogba came close to scoring his second goal on a couple of occasions but first his shot from inside the box was weak and easily held by Padelli and then he only managed to sky his effort after receiving a good ball from Cuadrado. Just after the hour mark, Juventus failed to took the lead in three different situations. Hernanes was the first to send a shot over the goal from outside the area, before Dybala’s effort was blocked and put behind for a corner kick. The Argentine delivered the ball in from the set piece but Pogba couldn’t make contact with the ball at the far post and the chance was squandered. Juventus came inches away to take the lead in the first minute of injury time as Bonucci met Hernanes’ brilliant delivery from a set piece and sent a similar great header against the crossbar. Marchisio followed the rebound but his shot was cleared by the defence. Despite that miss, the Bianconeri snatched the victory in the dying minutes through Cuadrado who managed to slide in and put the ball behind the line after a great pass from substitute Alex Sandro. Forced into ritiro after a ‘disastrous’ Mapei Stadium defeat on Wednesday, Juve had to steer their season on to the right path. A second successive Derby della Mole defeat would increase the tension surrounding the squad. It would also put Allegri at risk. The Coach got what he needed from the team in the first half. It was a much improved display capped by Paul Pogba’s wonder goal from outside the penalty area. His strike left Daniele Padelli rooted to the spot. For the first time this term the champions had scored inside the opening 20 minutes. It looked more like the Juventus on display against Atalanta, which was their best performance of the Serie A season. Even losing Sami Khedira to an early injury did little to stem the rhythm, as the Granata created little at the other end. The second half, however, was a completely different tale. But substitute Cuadrado grabbed the winning goal which lifted Juventus into 10th spot, eight points behind leaders Roma who can extend their lead later Saturday when they travel to fourth-placed Inter Milan. Juventus went into the match sitting in 12th place, with coach Massimiliano Allegri coming under intense pressure following some poor recent results. For their part, the visitors –- who won the last time these sides met back in May -– were buoyed by the fact they entered the clash above Juve in the table for the first time since 1993. However, Torino boss Giampiero Ventura had a lengthy injury list to contend with, missing Danilo Avelar, Alexander Farnerud, Alessandro Gazzi, Pontus Jansson, Joel Obi, Nikola Maksimovic and Josef Martinez.
