And the product of those changes saw Allegri's team flying out of the break, with the second half clearly belonging to the team in black and white stripes, not black and blue ones. They created chances, they defended well, and for good portion of the 45 or so minutes in the second half on Sunday night, they dictated the pace of the game. It was what you want your team to do in a game they truly have the chance to win. Except that goal they were clearly seeking in the second half never arrived. There were chances — some went well wide while others, like Sami Khedira's second-half chance just outside the six-yard box, went clanging off the upright. It was a game Juventus could have and maybe should have won, yet the end result was a scoreless draw against Inter at the San Siro. Not exactly the worst result in the world, but not the best way to quickly erase the terrible start to the Serie A season. That means Juventus head into this latest post-international break flurry of games in 14th place, one point behind Milan. Allegri is still saying Juventus will be in the Scudetto mix, and with more than two-thirds of the season still remaining, there's plenty of time to turn this thing around. Throw in the fact that three of Juventus' eight league games have been at Inter (third place), at Napoli (fifth place) and at Roma (second place), and it's not exactly like the schedule has helped them out at all. HOWEVER... As much as this can be considered a a decent result, Juve could have won it. And that's the frustrating part. If Khedira shoots the ball 12 inches to the right, we're not talking about another draw. Nope, we'd all be hyped because Juve just beat Inter and silenced the San Siro for another season. Instead, we're sitting here with the "What if..." thoughts surging through our heads once again. I hate those kind of thoughts, man. Especially when Juve play well enough against a good team to get the win. I mean, watching Andrea Barzagli play the way he did against Inter, then it's a perfect statement. If Juventus had been as good up front as Barzagli was in defense, we're talking about three points going back to Turin, not this team still being stuck ranked in the teens in the Serie A standings. That's a pretty easy one to figure out. Random thoughts and observations In baseball they have a saying about players who get hurt and stay in or come into the game in the late innings: "The ball is going to find you right away." The same could be applied to Gigi Buffon after he tweaked his calf in the first half. And just a few moments after the initial injury, Buffon was called into action and made the best save of the day as he went flying to his left to keep Inter off the scoreboard. Injuries can't even keep Buffon from making world-class saves. He's just a joy to watch. Paul Pogba didn't have a great game, but this run was absolutely incredible. This was not a foul on a player who already had a first-half yellow. Cool refereeing, man. I would like to assume Allegri didn't start Paulo Dybala because of all the traveling he did while getting his first call-up with the Argentina national team. And if that's the case, then I can see why Max did what he did. With that being said, Simone Zaza sure did have some decent looks on goal against Inter. He worked his tail off as you expect him to, but he probably should have finished at least one or two of those chances at the very least. Forget the miss on the golden chance for a second. I am truly enjoying watching Sami Khedira play in a Juventus jersey. He again showed why he can be a key member to this team's success this season. And now that Marchisio is back in the fold, you would think things would start to run smoothly in the center of the park. Oh, and as a reminder, Khedira didn't cost a dime to bring to Turin. Watch Juventus play like this on Wednesday in the Champions League and win. That's just because this season makes absolutely no sense to me at all. I'm sure I'm not the only one still confused by it, too. Neither side was able to break the deadlock in an entertaining game that ultimately saw both defences put in strong performances. Inter Samir Handanovic – 6 – Alert - Had to react well on a couple of occasions to shots from Cuadrado however was largely untroubled and was shielded well by his defence throughout the game. Davide Santon – 6 – Willing - Honest work in both defence and attack from the Italian without ever really imposing himself on the game, preferring to concentrate on keeping things tight at the back. Miranda – 6.5 – Brave - A strong performance alongside Murillo and was dealt well with the constant movement of Zaza and Morata, both of whom were ultimately substituted due to their lack of influence. Jeison Murillo – 6.5 – Strong - Made several impressive clearances and interventions to block Juve’s attacks and played an important part in his side keeping a clean sheet. Juan Jesus – 6 – Tested - Gave away a couple of fouls on Cuadrado but settled more as the game wore on and was ultimately able to keep his lively opponent at bay. Gary Medel – 6.5 – Work - Put in his usual hard-working performance in midfield by closing down opponents and kept his passing simple when in possession. Felipe Melo – 5.5 – Restricted - The Brazilian was loose with his passing in the first half and having picked up an early yellow card was replaced mid-way through the second half . Marcelo Brozovic – 6 – Positive - Showed willingness to contribute to Inter’s attacking play and put a couple of dangerous balls into the penalty area as well as forcing an excellent save from Buffon. Ivan Perisic – 6 – Running - Tried to provide a supply to his forwards from the wide areas with a few runs and crosses but was unable to create any clear-cut opportunities for Icardi or Jovetic. Stevan Jovetic – 7 – Influential - Was at the heart of most of Inter’s attacking play and looked the most likely to provide a goal for the Nerazzurri but was shut out by the Bianconeri’s back line. Mauro Icardi – 6 – Marshalled - Linked up well with Jovetic on a couple of occasions but his attacking threat was nullified by an attentive performance by Juve’s defenders as he struggled to get a clear-cut goalscoring opportunity. Substitutes Fredy Guarin (64 minutes) – 5.5 – Outsider - Didn’t have any noticeable involvement in the game after replacing Felipe Melo. Rodrigo Palacio (92 minutes) – N/A Geoffrey Kondogbia (92 minutes) – N/A Juventus Gianluigi Buffon – 6.5 – Comfortable - Made a world-class save in the first half from Brozovic but aside from that was untroubled for the majority of the game. Andrea Barzagli – 6.5 – Wall - Probably the pick of the Juve defence with a strong, alert performance that included a vital intervention from an Icardi cross late in the game. Leonardo Bonucci – 6 – Effective - A quiet but effective performance from the Italy international who was perhaps the least noticeable of his defensive partners but no less important. Giorgio Chiellini – 6.5 – Warrior - Did well to keep Icardi quiet all evening with a series of clearances and typically brave blocks. Also used the ball well when stepping out of defence. Patrice Evra – 6 – Engine - Usual energetic display from the Frenchman up and down the left flank and played his part in keeping the Inter attack at bay in Juve’s strong defensive performance. Juan Cuadrado – 6.5 – Energetic - A performance typically full of positive running and attacking intent and was his side’s most dangerous player for much of the game. Sami Khedira – 6.5 – Chance - Missed the best chance of the game when he hit the post from seven yards out but was a positive influence in his side’s midfield play and this was typified but his strong forward runs. Claudio Marchisio – 6 – Honest - Did the grunt work in the Juventus midfield to allow Khedira and Pogba more freedom which seemingly limited his influence on the game overall. Paul Pogba – 6 – Struggle - Had a quiet first half but picked up in the second half with some skilful touches and runs. Was however some way short of the level of performance now expected of him. Simone Zaza – 5 – Lacking - Was always willing to provide an outlet for Juve’s attacking play and worked hard to close down opponents but his decision-making lacked the required quality to threaten the Inter goal on numerous occasions. Substitued for Dybala after 78 minutes. Alvaro Morata – 5.5 – Quiet - Struggled to get involved in the game despite his good movement, however did set up a great chance for Khedira before being substituted after 71 minutes. Juve also were denied by the woodwork in the 69th minute when Sami Khedira's right-footed shot beat Inter Milan keeper Samir Handanovic but rattled the left post. The outcome in Milan has left Inter in third place, level on 17 points with second-place Roma. They are one point adrift of league leaders Fiorentina, who lost 2-1 at Napoli earlier on Sunday. Juve, meanwhile, have dropped to 14th in the standings with nine points from eight games. The Nerazzurri, who had failed to beat Juve at the San Siro in their previous five matches, were bolstered by the return of their top scorer Stevan Jovetic from injury. Simone Zaza replaced Paulo Dybala for the Old Lady after a disappointing start to the Serie A campaign for the Italian champions, with Claudio Marchisio also returning to the Juve starting XI. Ivan Perisic, Mauro Icardi and Stevan Jovetic formed a sumptuous attack for the Nerazzurri as they looked to top the table ahead of pacesetters Fiorentina. The atmosphere was hot and loaded before kick-off, with the Inter fans taunting Juventus for their failed bid at the treble last season. Juan Cuadrado went close for the visitors early on, but the Colombian winger couldn't convert from the angle, firing at Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, who beat the effort away. The hosts were on the back foot for the final moments of the encounter, with Juve the aggressor against an increasingly passive Inter. But despite a strong rally in the closing stages, Juve could not break the deadlock as Inter sat and accepted a share of the points.
