Juventus 2 - Udinese 0: Initial reaction and random observations It was a bit of a guessing game come kickoff at the Friuli, but Juventus (thankfully) showed that the team that was there Wednesday night didn’t show itself once again. You can’t necessarily say the same about what happened after the halftime break, but two very important things happened come the final whistle: Juventus got the win, beating Udinese 2-0 to claim their first win in three league fixtures. The extremely under-fire Juventus defense kept their first clean sheet since that slim 1-0 win over Lazio on Oct. 19, albeit needing a little bit of help from the woodwork in the second half. Not perfect, but certainly an improvement over what Juve did against Parma and enough defensively stability to get a clean sheet and hopefully some much-needed confidence for a backline that had allowed six goals in those two draws over the last week. ............ Obviously, any time you can take a 2-0 lead into halftime it’s shown you’ve played well during the opening half, but Juventus just didn’t look all that wobbly at all. That was so important because Udinese had played so well at home so far this season, with Inter being the only team to beat them in Udine. And once Nicolo Savona hammered home Kenan Yildiz’s shot that clanged off the right upright, we got a situation that Juventus hasn’t exactly had a lot the last couple of weeks. ............ Udinese’s second-half showing included nine shots, but Juve keeper Michele Di Gregorio was only forced into one save. (He had plenty of crosses to either punch out or try to claim in the air, so there’s also that.) Juve’s defense was certainly bending, but they ultimately never fully broke — which I’m not fully sure how, but it’s the truth. ............ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS ............ Dusan Vlahovic touches in the first half: 8. That’s not great! Khpehren Thuram ground duels won in the first half: 6. That’s pretty great! Speaking of Thuram, that had to be his best game since coming to Juventus, right? Like the team in general, his performance in the first half was really well-rounded. He was contributing defensively, he was making a ton of runs going forward and had a couple of scoring chances even before the shot that lead to the own goal. Man, could Juve’s midfield really benefit from Thuram playing like that on a much more consistent basis. Thuram deserved credit for that goal simply for how good his run was. I know you can’t really get credit for it when it bounces off the post and then the keeper’s back, but dammit give that man a goal because he deserved it. ............ I don’t know if it’s true, but this felt like the game in which Savona got forward as much as he has this season. I’d probably say that Thuram is the man of the match in my book, but Savona wasn’t too far behind. Sure, I get that he made a few tired mistakes in the couple of minutes before he was subbed off, but before that he really was having a strong performance on both ends of the field. Who led Juventus in tackles against Udinese? A certain Turkish striker with the No. 10 jersey. That’s right — Yildiz finished with a game-high five tackles. ............ We saw what life could be like if Thiago Motta decides to rest Vlahovic and that involved Yildiz becoming the false 9. I dunno how to feel about it just yet, but Yildiz playing a little more centrally and closer to goal has worked well in the past, so we’ll see. Pierre Kalulu finished with 99 touches. Shame. Somebody shoulda passed him the ball just to get him to 100 and have it be a nice, clean number. Federico Gatti had a perfect 100% pass success rate. I was not expecting that when I looked the passing numbers up after the final whistle. ............ Sure would like Teun Koopmeiners to score his first Juventus goal soon just so we don’t to hear about how Teun Koopmeiners has yet to score his first Juventus goal. Juventus Player Ratings vs Udinese: Savona Keeps His Cool Juventus bounced back from their poor midweek outing against Parma by prevailing over Udinese at the Bluenergy Stadium in the battle of the two Bianconeri. ............ Juventus (4-2-3-1) Michele Di Gregorio – 6.5 ............ Nicolò Savona – 7.5 A brilliant display from the young right-back who kept his cool to slot the ball past several defenders to give his side a valuable two-goal lead. He also showed his composure and maturity at the back, albeit he eventually found some difficulties following Hassane Kamara’s entry. Federico Gatti – 6.5 A solid outing at the back from the former Frosinone man, even though he encountered tougher times when Lorenzo Lucca entered the pitch. Pierre Kalulu – 6.5 Just like Gatti, the Frenchman was enjoying a relatively quiet night against Davis and Florian Thauvin, but Lucca gave him something to worry about. Andrea Cambiaso – 6.5 ............ Manuel Locatelli – 6.5 ............ Khephren Thuram – 7 This was arguably the Frenchman’s best performance since joining Juventus in the summer. While the opener went down as an Okeye own-goal, Thuram had his signature all over it. He also launched the play that culminated in the second. Timothy Weah – 5.5 ............ Teun Koopmeiners – 5.5 The Dutchman will be kicking himself for failing to open his Juventus goalscoring account when he found himself in front of goal. He’s now acting as the team’s technical leader, but he didn’t see much of the ball this time. Kenan Yildiz – 7 A fine outing from the Juventus Number 10 who picked up Thuram on the opener and then almost scored the second himself but was denied by the post. Showcased his outrageous dribbling skills on a few occasions. Dusan Vlahovic – 5.5 To his credit, the Serbian remained mentally composed despite seeing little of the ball. Tested Okeye with a thunderous effort, but that was his lone highlight of a quiet evening in Udine Substitutes Weston McKennie – 5.5 ............ Francisco Conceicao – 5.5 The Portuguese star is always dangerous on the ball, but couldn’t inflict damage this time. He also wasn’t on song with Yildiz. Juventus return to winning ways as Savona shines in Udine Juventus ended their three-match winless streak by beating Udinese at the Bluenergy Stadium by two unanswered goals. ............ Juventus dominated possession from the early going, and could have opened the scoring in the first two minutes, but Thuram failed to hit the target from a narrow angle. Nevertheless, the Frenchman made up for it by producing the opener in the 20th minute. The Bianconeri displayed neat football in the buildup but Thuram still had much to do. The midfielder dribbled past Christian Kabesele before hitting the far post, but was lucky enough to see the ball bounce off Maduka Okeye’s back and sneak into the goal to give the Old Lady the lead. Keinan Davis almost restored parity straight away, but was denied by Michele Di Gregorio’s astonishing save. In the 37th minute, Motta’s men doubled their lead when Yildiz was thwarted by the post, but Savona was in the right place to pounce on the rebound. The young right-back drilled a low ball with his weaker foot to score his second of the season. ............ Nevertheless, Motta will be content with the all-important victory, as Juventus temporarily climb to third place in the table.
