Round 13: Juventus vs. Cagliari match preview Juventus have returned from the Arctic Circle and have the hopes that they will be done with those kinds of temperatures and playing conditions for the rest of the late-fall weeks and into the winter. Same goes for hoping that a first Champions League win can carry over to a current run domestically that has seen plenty of draws the last few weeks. Then again, it’s not expected to be all that much warmer in Turin this weekend. So while it might be cold in Turin on Saturday evening, Juventus are certainly hoping to build off their first Champions League win of the season. The last thing Juve manager Luciano Spalletti needs to see from his team is the same result he had seen the previous three outings in all competitions. You know, the sight of Juventus drawing against an opponent no matter how good or bad they may be. But a lot like when Juve faced Fiorentina last weekend, Spalletti’s squad now has a Cagliari side that entered Matchday 13 in 14th place and all of three points above the drop zone as we charge toward the midway point of the 2025-26 season. ............ But if Spalletti’s team wants any chance of getting into the top four before the end of the 2025 calendar year, then it’s these types of opponents in which they need to start beating regularly again rather than recording draw after draw after draw. ............ In fact, it’s the same seventh-place standing when Juve play at the Allianz Stadium, with four wins and two losses in their first six home fixtures domestically this season. So, with all of that being said, the main question coming off Tuesday’s win over Bodø/Glimt is probably this one: Will we see the Juventus from the first half in Norway or the one that flipped the score in their favor in the second half? It sure would be nice — especially against a team like Cagliari that hasn’t won a game since the last week of September and has just a single positive result over that span, with a scoreless draw against the aforementioned red-hot Como coming earlier this month. ............ Juventus have won 14 of their last 17 games against Cagliari. That is a trend that has to continue for the simple fact that Spalletti’s squad has to keep pace with the top six and not let things get even worse as we head toward the new year. Because if the margin between Juve and the top six becomes more than just a few points once we hit Christmas, there’s going to be a lot of work to do — yes, even more than the current day — after we all try and shake off our New Year’s Eve hangovers. Nobody wants that — especially when you realize how crowded the fixture list is going to be over the next couple of months. TEAM NEWS Spalletti did not hold a pre-match press conference on Friday, so we’re unsure of where things stand officially in terms of injuries and availability for Saturday’s game. Federico Gatti, who missed the trip to Norway earlier this week due to the flu, looks like he will be available off the bench after returning to training on Thursday. ............ Considering Juventus are a week away from their big trip to Naples, it feels important to repeat that Teun Koopmeiners is one yellow card away from having to serve a one-game ban. So if he wants to continue the recent trend of not getting a card, that should ensure he will be playing against Napoli in a week. JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH As we have done plenty of the times over the last few years, we’re going to talk about somebody from Serbia. The catch is that the Serbian we are about to talk about probably isn’t the one you think. ............ The Serbian we are about to talk about is Filip Kostic. You know, the guy who scored Juventus’ only goal in their less-than-inspiring performance in Florence last weekend. When it comes to the predicted lineups for Cagliari’s trip to Turin, guess who’s being tipped to start on the left wing? That, my friends, would be our buddy Kostic. ............ Juventus’ need for some sort of presence on the left wing that isn’t Kenan Yildiz is pretty apparent at this point. Cambiaso has provided it at times, but is still just so widely inconsistent on both ends of the field to be relied upon like he has been in the past. (He will still get a lot of minutes, though, because of who he is and he has a manager who very much appreciates him.) But Kostic has delivered when he’s played — which, again, is something I did not expect to say when it became evident he was sticking around this season. So let’s hope Kostic can once again do something cool on the left wing just like he did last weekend. Maybe it can even come in a game that Juventus actually wins, too. When injured Juventus star Bremer is expected to return to action Juventus star Gleison Bremer has been forced to the sidelines for two months, but the Bianconeri hope the Brazilian centre-back will return to action against Bologna in mid-December. ............ The Brazil international underwent meniscus surgery on the medial meniscus of his left knee in October, but hasn’t played a competitive match for the Old Lady since the end of September. Bremer is gradually increasing the workload during training sessions, and his target is to be available for an away game at Bologna on December 14. ............ Bremer’s return will boost Luciano Spalletti’s options in central defence, possibly allowing the Tuscan tactician to use a four-man defence. ............ . Napoli is competing with Juventus for Serie A midfielder Davide Frattesi has remained under Juventus’ observation, and the club may now have a renewed opportunity to sign him following his struggles at Inter Milan. The midfielder first came onto the Old Lady’s radar during his time at Sassuolo, where his consistent performances attracted attention from several top clubs. Juventus were reportedly interested when he sought to leave the Black and Greens, but he ultimately opted for a move to Inter Milan. Since joining the Nerazzurri, however, he has struggled to secure regular playing time, prompting renewed interest from the Bianconeri, who see him as an ideal addition to their squad. ............ Juventus view Frattesi as a player capable of strengthening their midfield both tactically and strategically. His previous performances for the national team under Luciano Spalletti have enhanced his appeal, and the new Juventus manager is reportedly eager to work with him again should a transfer take place. Frattesi possesses the versatility to contribute in multiple phases of play, combining energy, vision, and technical ability, qualities that Juventus are keen to integrate into their squad. The club believes that, with the right environment and consistent playing time, Frattesi could quickly become a key figure in their midfield setup. ............ Despite Juventus’ interest, they are not the only team monitoring Frattesi’s situation. Napoli is also considering adding him to their squad. The Partenopei recently experienced the loss of Kevin de Bruyne to injury and may look to strengthen their midfield during the January transfer window. ............ . Journalist says Juventus ‘would consider’ signing Verratti in January Juventus expert Gianni Balzarini suggests that the Bianconeri ‘would consider’ signing Marco Verratti in January, but the Italian midfielder would need to take a huge pay cut to move to Turin. ............ “Juventus need a midfielder for a transition period,” the Italian reporter said. “In January, Juventus will not sign a Regista for the long-term future. The former PSG midfielder would need to give up his annual €30m salary to join Juventus, but the Bianconeri are his favourite club, and he’d play in Serie A for the first time. If I were him, I’d think about it. If he were open to the idea, perhaps Juventus would consider him.” Verratti, 33, spent almost his entire career at PSG and left the Ligue 1 giants in the summer of 2024. ............ Verratti has never played in Serie A, given that he signed for PSG in the summer of 2012 after contributing to Pescara’s promotion from Serie B in the previous campaign. ............ . The agent of Juventus target says he could be sold in January Atalanta’s Ederson has long attracted interest from Juventus, and recent developments appear to have given the Bianconeri new encouragement in their pursuit. The midfielder has also been monitored by major European clubs, including Liverpool and Barcelona, and his consistently high level of performance has established him as one of the most impressive players in his role. Atalanta are known for protecting the value of their best talents, and during the last transfer window they were unwilling to consider any offer below 70 million euros. However, the circumstances surrounding his contract are now influencing their position. ............ Ederson will enter the final year of his deal next summer, a factor that has naturally affected the expectations of La Dea. The midfielder rarely discusses his future in public and prefers to focus on his contributions on the pitch, an attitude appreciated by Atalanta, which has been pleased with both his performances and professionalism. Nevertheless, every player eventually reaches a stage where a move becomes a realistic possibility, especially when interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs is sustained. With the end of his contract approaching, it has become increasingly unlikely that any team would consider paying up to 60 million euros, and Atalanta have begun to adjust their valuation accordingly. ............ His representative André Cury explained, “Atalanta were asking for a lot of money, between 60 and 75 million euros, but now his contract is almost up, they could even halve the price, between 30 and 40 million. He is a spectacular player with some of the best statistics in Europe for his position.” ............ . Stefano Tacconi backs Spalletti to succeed on the Juventus bench Luciano Spalletti has become the latest manager tasked with restoring Juventus to the summit of Italian football after several seasons of inconsistent form. The Bianconeri have endured a challenging period and continue to work tirelessly to regain the level of success that once defined them. Despite their stature, they have not won the league since 2020, and they have not come close to securing the title in recent years. For a club with such a rich tradition, this decline has highlighted the need for meaningful change and renewed direction. ............ The men in black and white remain determined to improve, and Spalletti is working to bring Juventus back to a more competitive standard, although the process has proved far from straightforward. As an established figure in management, he carries a strong reputation, and his performance with Juventus will inevitably influence how he is judged in the future. The club remain confident in his ability to guide the team forward, believing that his experience and strategic understanding can lay the foundation for progress. ............ Stefano Tacconi, a former Juventus player, has expressed confidence in Spalletti’s potential to succeed. He said, “He made a good impression on me, he’s nice and funny. We talked a bit about the current situation, and he said he’s studying the situation to be able to intervene in the best way possible. I’m convinced he can become a Juventus man too, even if it’s not easy to take over midway through the game. But I saw his passion, and above all, he wants to win. A coach who speaks like that is already in the game, and you can already see greater organisation.” ............ . Padovano backs Jonathan David to shine despite tough start Former Juventus star Michele Padovano expressed his satisfaction when the Bianconeri secured the signing of Jonathan David in the most recent transfer window from Lille. The striker had run down his contract at the French club after several seasons as their leading scorer, attracting interest from many top European sides. Juventus were aware of the competition and acted swiftly to ensure they added him to their squad before another team could intervene. ............ David has not enjoyed the smoothest start to his time in Turin, with recent matches seeing him begin on the bench and only feature for limited minutes. As one of the highest-paid players in Serie A, expectations surrounding him are understandably high. Juventus had brought him in as a replacement for Dusan Vlahovic, yet the Serbian forward currently remains ahead of him in the pecking order. This situation is far from ideal for the club, and they continue to work hard to help David demonstrate the level of performance they believe he can offer. ............ Despite the slow start, Juventus intend to remain patient, and Padovano believes this is the correct approach. He said, “I’ve always liked Jonathan David. I was very happy with his arrival in the summer, especially because the Canadian is a striker who has consistently scored 20 goals a year in Ligue 1, so I think he can do the same in Serie A. I hope his decisive goal against Bodo Glimt on Tuesday can unlock his potential. He has all the potential to do well at Juve, despite a difficult start. Now it’s up to him.” ............ . Juventus vs Cagliari: Preview and Prediction Juventus return to Serie A duty on Saturday looking to channel the emotion and momentum of their dramatic midweek European triumph. Their narrow UEFA Champions League victory may have lifted pressure momentarily, but Luciano Spalletti knows that the domestic picture remains far less forgiving. Standing in their way at the Allianz Stadium is a Cagliari side entrenched in another tense relegation fight and desperate for points. The midweek trip to Norway could have easily deepened Juventus’s crisis. Instead, it delivered a flicker of hope. Winless in Europe prior to Tuesday night, the Bianconeri entered their clash with Bodo/Glimt in dangerous territory near the bottom of the group. But in an eventful second half, two of their most scrutinised forwards finally struck back, Lois Openda finding the net before Jonathan David snatched a stoppage-time winner in striking fashion. The 3-2 victory did not solve all problems, but it restored belief and pushed Juventus into a playoff spot with three matchdays remaining. Yet, the mood in Serie A remains far less positive. Last weekend’s draw against bottom-placed Fiorentina only reinforced the sense of stagnation that has plagued Juve for over a year. Matches they should be controlling too often become scrappy, disjointed affairs, and dropped points have become a recurring theme. No side across Europe’s top five leagues has drawn more matches since the start of last season, 21 from 50, a statistic that reflects both structural issues and a chronic lack of cutting edge. Their current haul of 20 points from 12 matches marks the club’s third-worst return at this stage of a season this century, while scoring only 15 league goals represents their lowest output since 1999. Spalletti’s arrival has not yet sparked the dramatic transformation many fans had hoped for, and with a widening gap to Italy’s leading contenders, the pressure to correct course grows heavier by the week. ............ Team News & Tactics Juventus Juventus return to domestic action with relatively few absentees, giving Luciano Spalletti the opportunity to field a near full-strength side. The only confirmed injuries are in defence, with both Gleison Bremer and Daniele Rugani unavailable due to muscular issues. Their absence leaves Juventus slightly light at centre-back, although the versatility within the squad should compensate. Long-term absentee Arkadiusz Milik also remains sidelined and will not take part in Saturday’s contest. After rotating heavily in the UEFA Champions League win over Bodo/Glimt, Spalletti is expected to restore key starters to the lineup. Khephren Thuram should return to the midfield after being rested in midweek, while Kenan Yildiz is poised to slot back into the advanced playmaking line. Dusan Vlahovic, who began on the bench in Norway, is pushing strongly for a start, particularly given his outstanding record against Cagliari, with eight goals in eleven Serie A appearances against the Sardinian club. Juventus have no suspensions for this fixture. Spalletti is expected to continue with his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, a structure designed to maximise control in midfield and create fluid rotations between the attacking midfielders and the central striker. Michele Di Gregorio will start in goal, offering calm distribution and sharp reflexes behind the defensive line. In the back three, Pierre Kalulu should occupy the right-sided centre-back role, combining mobility with strong tackling, while Lloyd Kelly features centrally as the defensive anchor. On the left, the technically composed Teun Koopmeiners is expected to start as the ball-playing defender, contributing to build-up phases with accurate forward passing. Across the midfield, Andrea Cambiaso will operate as the right wing-back, providing width and progressive movement up the flank. Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram form the central pairing, with Locatelli orchestrating play from deep and Thuram offering athleticism, ball-carrying strength and transitional drive. On the left wing, Filip Kostic brings direct running, crossing ability and significant experience in wide channels. Ahead of them, Weston McKennie and Kenan Yildiz will occupy the dual attacking midfield roles. McKennie’s dynamism and intelligent positioning offer vertical threat and pressing energy, while Yildiz provides creativity, close control and a natural ability to drift into pockets between the lines. Leading the attack is Dusan Vlahovic, the focal point of Juventus’s forward movement. His finishing, aerial ability and hold-up play provide the team with both a reliable target in the box and an outlet during transitions. Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Kelly, Koopmeiners; Cambiaso, Locatelli, Thuram, Kostic; McKennie, Yildiz; Vlahovic Cagliari ............ Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Caprile; Zappa, Luperto, Obert; Palestra, Deiola, Prati, Folorunsho, Felici; Esposito, Borrelli Key Stats Cagliari have beaten Juventus just once in their last 27 Serie A meetings, a run stretching back over a decade. During that period, Juventus have scored 64 goals against the Sardinian side, an average of 2.3 per game. No club across Europe’s top five leagues has drawn more matches than Juventus since the start of last season, 21 draws in 50 league matches. Cagliari have failed to win any of their last eight Serie A matches, collecting just four points during that run. They have also conceded at least two goals in six of those fixtures. Dusan Vlahovic has scored eight goals in 11 Serie A appearances against Cagliari, making the Rossoblu one of his most productive opponents. His scoring average of 0.72 goals per game against them is one of his highest against any Italian side. Despite sitting in the top half of the table, Juventus have scored only 15 goals through 12 league matches, their lowest tally at this stage of a season since 1999. By contrast, Cagliari have conceded 23 goals, one of the highest totals in the league. Player to Watch Dusan Vlahovic Few fixtures suit Dusan Vlahovic as naturally as a meeting with Cagliari. The Serbian striker has built a remarkable personal record against the Sardinian side, scoring eight times in eleven Serie A appearances. But beyond the numbers, this match comes at a pivotal moment in Vlahovic’s season. Having started on the bench in Juventus’s dramatic European win over Bodo/Glimt, he returns to domestic action with renewed purpose and something to prove. Vlahovic’s influence in this Juventus setup goes far beyond his finishing. His ability to pin centre-backs, occupy multiple defenders, and create pockets of space for Kenan Yildiz and Weston McKennie is essential to how Luciano Spalletti wants his team to attack. When Juventus struggle for rhythm, as they often have this season, it is Vlahovic’s aggression, off-the-ball movement, and willingness to operate on the shoulder of the last defender that injects urgency into the final third. Against a Cagliari defence missing key personnel and low on confidence, the Serb’s physicality could play a decisive role. His aerial presence will challenge Adam Obert and Sebastiano Luperto, while his capacity to drop deep and link play forces midfielders out of position and destabilises the Rossoblu’s defensive structure. ............ Prediction Juventus 2-0 Cagliari This match-up pits two teams moving in opposite directions, even if neither is playing at their absolute best. Juventus remain a side with structural issues, an attack that misfires too often, a tendency to stall in the final third, and a long-standing problem converting dominance into victories. But despite these flaws, the Bianconeri still possess far greater quality, depth and individual match-winners than their Sardinian visitors. ............ Luciano Spalletti’s side may not be at their most fluid, but fixtures like this often come down to control, patience, and the ability to capitalise on moments of quality. With Kenan Yildiz returning to the starting XI, Khephren Thuram anchoring midfield and Dusan Vlahovic playing against one of his favourite opponents, Juventus should have enough to break through Cagliari’s resistance. Cagliari’s best hope lies in disruptive defending and set pieces, but sustaining that level of concentration for 90 minutes at the Allianz Stadium is an uphill battle. Juventus will likely impose themselves gradually, and once the breakthrough comes, the gap in class should become apparent. . Zibì Boniek explains difference between his Juventus team and the current one Zibì Boniek spent three successful years at Juventus between 1982 and 1985, establishing himself as one of the most impressive foreign arrivals at the club during that era. Moving to Turin from Poland, he produced several outstanding performances and became an important figure in a side that enjoyed significant success. ............ His time at Juventus coincided with one of the most successful periods in the history of the Bianconeri, during which he won the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia and the European Cup, among other honours. Juventus has continued to be regarded as the biggest club in Italian football, yet the current team struggles to win matches with the consistency expected of them. ............ Boniek noted that while Juventus continue to work hard to return to the top of Italian football, there is a clear contrast between today’s team and the side he represented. He remarked, ‘It was full of true champions who made football history, Vialli, Baggio. Now I see good players. Our Juve was different, Boniperti called my wife: are you okay, ma’am? Tell your husband he needs a haircut. Today it is like other teams. Once upon a time, any club that wanted to sell a player would call Juve. When they won a Scudetto, Andrea Agnelli took to the field and spoke to the fans in front of three microphones, the Avvocato must have been turning in his grave. It is not a bad thing in itself, it is just that everyone does it. But I do not want to speak ill of anyone.’ ............ .
