Bologna-Juve to be moved?

Bologna have confirmed that they have asked for Sunday’s kick-off time for their game against Juventus to be moved.

The tie is presently scheduled to start locally at 20.45, but the Rossoblu want it brought forward to the afternoon because of the big freeze in Italy.

“We’ve asked the Lega Serie A to move the match to 15.00 hours,” Rossoblu Vice-President Maurizio Setti told TMW.

“It has started to snow again in Bologna today and there is a risk that snow at the weekend could make the game impossible to play.

“Nevertheless, Juventus have informed us that they will agree to an earlier kick-off. Let us see what happens over the next hours.”

All of last weekend’s evening matches were switched to afternoon ties given the freezing temperatures in the peninsula.

Conte targeting Coppa final

Antonio Conte has declared that Juventus will do everything to beat Milan in the Coppa Italia, even as he confirms first-team changes will be made.

The two sides, currently locked in the Serie A title race, are preparing this week for the first leg of their Italian Cup semi-final, scheduled at San Siro for Wednesday evening.

Ahead of the hotly-anticipated clash, Conte has promised that he and his players will give their all to progress through.

“I actually would have preferred a weaker opponent,” he told the assembled Press on Tuesday afternoon.

“Let me be clear, however, that tomorrow’s match is important beyond the team we face, because it is the semi-final of the Coppa Italia.

“We want to reach the final, as well as to take on Milan now. The opportunity to progress is equally spread between the two teams because playing home and away in this meeting counts for a lot in terms of performance.

“To win a European competition for example, you have to be good but also lucky, because if you are in a period of poor form, you can get away with facing less-equipped opponents, whilst in the League usually the best team is rewarded for their continuity.”

Conte has confirmed that he will ring the changes for the clash, from giving run-outs to each of the club’s January signings to handing Marco Storari a go in goal again.

“He is playing his part in the right way and the least I can do on my part is thank him for what he is doing. He is a great professional and a great goalkeeper who is giving me a big hand on and off the field.

“The new signings have come to represent not only alternatives but points of strength.

“Moreover, Caceres has been at Juventus before, I’ve worked with Padoin at Atlanta, whilst Borriello has now been here for a month.

“Therefore when they play they can contribute, because we need them to, straight away.”

However, it may still be too early to expect involvement from the forgotten man Elijero Elia.

“Elijero has grown since he arrived. He is starting to understand what we want from him and he is close to becoming a more complete player. He is entering a new type of mentality and a new way of working and is starting to show in training some of the features that led us to buy him.

“I expect him when the time is right to become a reliable player in all the points that you say I do not see in him on the field, and it will be when you least expect it.”

The two clubs also meet later in the month in the League. Before they do, though, the Bianconeri face three further League tests in what is proving to be a cramped fixture schedule through February. Specifically, the postponed clash with Parma is scheduled for a week tomorrow.

“The rearranged fixtures are destabilising, because there are programs of work we have planned out for months in advance, and instead, you find yourself having to review things a little because you have to try to retrieve items that are already planned out.

“There was meant to be a week of work between Bologna and Catania, and yet now we have to play against Parma…

“We are experienced a tough winter, you still don’t know what will happen tomorrow of even in the next round of League games, but the call is always the same - to be in a position to offer the best show possible.”

Allegri sees no Milan crisis

Ahead of the Coppa Italia semi-final with Juventus, Max Allegri declares Milan are not in crisis and defends Zlatan Ibrahimovic after his weekend dismissal.

Defeat to Lazio and a draw at home to Napoli may see the Rossoneri still just a point behind League leaders Juve, but they have now played a game more than their Turin rivals.

Ahead of welcoming Antonio Conte’s side to San Siro in midweek for the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final, Allegri looked to first deny that the red half of Milan is struggling.

“Right now we have to stay calm and focused on what we do in the field,” began the Coach. “Without getting distracted by what is said outside of Milanello.

“This is not a moment of crisis. There have been some bad results but also on Sunday Juventus drew at home and we are therefore still in line.”

The former Cagliari Coach is still wary of the threat Juventus represent on Wednesday night.

“The first thing that catches the eye is that they are team with character, all the players show this with their availability and nature and this competition is their first chance to win something important.

“If after 20 rounds they have not lost then it means that Juventus have excellent quality.

“They are doing well but in the end to win a Scudetto it is always the same, you need to reach around 82-83 points.

“Tomorrow will be important for us to win or at least do well in, so as not to endanger the chance of progressing to the final. We want to get to the final of the Coppa Italia.”

Allegri prepares for the match with Ibrahimovic available, but he is facing doing without him for the team’s next three League matches after the Swede’s red card for violent conduct at the weekend.

“Ibrahimovic has paid a little bit for everyone,” he reflected in defence of his forward.

“Unfortunately Ibra has made a not-so-wonderful gesture in going to the defence of [Antonio] Nocerino. We have seen similar incidents in games go unpunished, but we are hopeful on the appeal.

“We can cope without him now as apart from [Antonio] Cassano and [Alexandre] Pato, everyone is available, so I am not worried.”

Where counterpart Conte refused to comment too much on the situation with Ibrahimovic, Allegri showed no qualms in stirring the pot with regards Beppe Marotta’s complaints from the weekend.

The Bianconero director general’s statements on Monday have caught attention in the Press, after he suggested that referees need to be better assigned to games.

“I do not know what has prompted these statements from Marotta, but at Milan I have a different style,” commented the 44-year-old tactician.

“Here we talk about helping referees, instead of raising a fuss at the first unfavourable decision.”

Going into the domestic cup tie, injuries continue to be a headache for Rossoneri boss Massimiliano Allegri, who will still be without the likes of Antonio Cassano, Alexandre Pato, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Alberto Aquilani, Mathieu Flamini, Alexander Merkel and Gennaro Gattuso among others.

Veteran stopper Alessandro Nesta is also out due to a muscle strain, meaning either Daniele Bonera or Philippe Mexes will partner Thiago Silva at centre-back. Zlatan Ibrahimovic picked up a three-match league ban for slapping Napoli's Salvatore Aronica, but is available for this match and could indeed start against his former team before his enforced rest. New signing Maxi Lopez is also an option.

On the other side of the pitch, the Bianconeri do not have nearly as many selection concerns, with just winger Simone Pepe likely to skip the high-profile clash through injury. Nonetheless, coach Antonio Conte is expected to provide some turnover in his starting XI.

Marco Storari will replace Gianliugi Buffon in goal and winter signing Marco Borriello should give Alessandro Matri a rest in the central striker role. Leonardo Bonucci should also start in defence. Mirko Vucinic, Alessandro Del Piero and Fabio Quagliarella are all hoping to be the one selected alongside the former Roma player and Emanuele Giaccherini in attack.

The Italy Under-21 international showed plenty of effective touches with a goal and assist against Novara and Lazio respectively in the Coppa Italia thus far and this match will give the ex-Padova man another opportunity to prove to Allegri he can be a regular contributor for his side, even in Serie A and the Champions League.

The 2006 World Cup winner was deemed surplus to requirements at San Siro last season, although he has been an undoubted central figure in Juventus' revival in 2011-12 and arguably the best signing in Serie A this season. This cup contest will give the player the chance to show Milan first-hand that they should not have cast him aside so easily.

Prediction

Conte's men should fancy their chances of taking a result away from home due to the hosts' numerous absenteees. If the Bianconeri can keep it at the back, they should be able to come away with a draw or better before the return leg in late March.

Allegri defends Ibra, attacks Juve

Massimiliano Allegri stirred the fires ahead of AC Milan's Italian Cup trip to Turin on Wednesday by sticking up for his under-fire striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic while pointing an accusing finger at opponents Juventus.

Ibrahimovic is available to play but will then miss the next three league games – including the crucial top of the table clash with Juve on February 25 – as punishment for slapping Napoli's Salvatore Aronica on Sunday.

He was sent off for that, although to Aronica's credit he indulged in no theatrics after the incident.

Quite the opposite, in fact.

Ibrahimovic's slap came as the Napoli defender had Milan's Antonio Nocerino by the throat and Aronica reacted by slapping the diminutive midfielder, whom Ibrahimovic was standing behind when he threw his cheeky blind-sider.

But the linesman saw the first strike and Ibrahimovic was sent packing.

Even so, Allegri stuck up for a player who was also banned last season for punching another opponent in the ribs and another time for abusing a linesman.

"He did something that wasn't very nice but he was defending Nocerino who he saw as the little guy," said a smiling Allegri.

"Similar incidents happen in games and they're not always punished. On Sunday Zlatan paid for everyone so now we'll wait for his appeal (Milan are hoping to have his suspension reduced)."

Having defended his own player, Allegri turned on Juventus, who have been complaining since Sunday about a possible penalty they weren't given in their 0-0 draw at home to strugglers Siena.

It was a touch-and-go incident but Juve seem convinced they have been robbed and general manager Guiseppe Marotta has been particularly vocal in demanding respect for his team and only the best referees for their games.

"People talk about helping the referees but then as soon as a decision goes against them they kick up a stink," said Allegri.

"At the end the decisions for and against even themselves out, there's no need to reduce matches to single incidents such as a penalty.

"You need to be more serene to help referees. We as a club do things differently (to Marotta)."

As for Wednesday's game, Allegri believes a positive result could also help his side's title quest.

Juve lead Milan in that competition by a point with a game in hand.

"Tomorrow we'll need to work hard because we want to go all the way in this competition," said Allegri.

"We must do well and not compromise our chances of making the final. Psychologically it could be a very important key in the league."

Juventus coach Antonio Conte believes tomorrow's Coppa Italia semi-final first leg against AC Milan is too close to call.

Milan beat Lazio 3-1 at the San Siro to book their place in the last four as Juve overcame Roma 3-0, and Conte is confident both sides will give the competition their all alongside battling it out at the top of Serie A. Juve are currently top of the league, one point ahead of Milan.

"We'll put everything we have on to the field," Conte told www.giornalaccio rosa.it. "The percentages are split 50-50, and the result will be decided on the pitch."

Conte also confirmed his three new signings will play at the San Siro. "Marco Borriello, Martin Caceres, Simone Padoin will play," he said. "In goal we will play Marco Storari and who is in better shape at the moment out of strikers Fabio Quagliarella and Alessandro Del Piero? I think they're both well. I hope so. Del Piero plays."

Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri will be without a host of players, including Antonio Cassano, Alexandre Pato, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Alexander Merkel, Gennaro Gattuso, Alberto Aquilani and Mathieu Flamini.

However, striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is eligible for the cup clash against his former club after he was sent off 19 minutes into the second half of Sunday's Serie A clash against Napoli for slapping Salvatore Aronica.

In the other semi-final first leg, Siena take on Napoli at the Artemio Franchi on Thursday. Edinson Cavani's brace fired Napoli into the last four at the expense of reigning champions Inter Milan, while Siena defeated Chievo 1-0 in the other quarter-final to book their spot in the semis for the first time.

Siena head coach Giuseppe Sannino admitted he was surprised to make it this far, but is prepared for a tough clash against Napoli, who held Milan to a 0-0 draw in the league last weekend.

"We reached this semi-final almost without realising it, but by working hard every day," Sannino told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli. "I have often played youngsters who have not played much in the league and they have done well.Now we have to play with a carefree style, but keeping in mind that Napoli will face us at their home in the next game.

"Playing at home, obviously we have to take more risks, because then we will return to San Paolo, where the Napoli crowd always urge their team on to do more. We want to get a positive result to give ourselves a chance against Napoli in the second leg."

As Juventus and AC Milan are far friendlier than either are with Italy's other giants, Inter, their fight on two fronts for the scudetto and the Coppa Italia has been disconcertingly civil so far, both trying almost too hard to talk up the other.

Antonio Conte and co furiously repel any bid to tag them as favourites, even though that's exactly what they are in Serie A at 1.92, so will perhaps relish a chance to compete as legitimate outsiders at the San Siro on Wednesday in the first leg of this Coppa Italia semi-final.

Their respective routes to the top of the table and final four of the cup could hardly have been more different. Juventus lead the way because they haven't lost but just as significantly due to their ability to peak in the big games, winning four of their five meetings with top-five rivals.

AC Milan don't have that air of invincibility, falling four times already, and their defeats have come to positional rivals with only one victory and six points claimed in eight encounters with top-seven colleagues.

They stay in contention because unlike the Old Lady, they excel at negotiating Serie A's notoriously tough lesser teams. That's primarily thanks to moments of Zlatan Ibrahimovic magic, however a slap at Salvatore Aronica on Sunday sees him banned for three league matches, one against Juventus.

The Swede is available for this cup clash with his former employers, yet he didn't have much of an impact when Juventus sunk the Rossoneri 2-0 in October. He heads into this tie on the back of two blanks in which his side failed to score entirely, so the visitors do appeal at chunky odds of 3.6.

Other options if you fancy the unbeaten Bianconeri but aren't certain that they will triumph include laying the hosts at 2.32 and backing them in the draw no bet market at 2.3.

Three of the last four semi-final first legs have had under 2.5 goals, so with both sides involved in 0-0 draws at the weekend and the champions in particular weakened by the absence of Alexandre Pato, Antonio Cassano and Kevin-Prince Boateng, that's perhaps the most attractive option of all at 1.75.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has revealed that he will field his three most recent signings in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final clash with AC Milan on Wednesday night.

Marco Borriello, Simone Padoin and Martin Caceres all arrived in Turin last month and the Bianconeri boss believes that the trio warrant the opportunity to prove their worth at San Siro in the away leg.

“The three players who arrived in the transfer market need to play and must give us important responses just like all the others," Conte told Juve's official website.

"They’ve been brought in to bolster the squad and not just as alternatives, but valid options from every point of view.”

Conte also revealed that Marco Storari will take over from first-choice goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon between the posts.

“The Coppa Italia is Storari’s competition, there’s no doubt about that," he argued. "I’d like to praise his professionalism.

"He’s a great goalkeeper, he wants to play, but he’s making a great contribution both when he’s required to play and off the field.”

While Conte is clearly resting some first-team regulars for the game in Milan, the former Bianconeri midfielder insists that his side have every chance of bringing a lead back to Juventus Stadium.

“The game needs to be approached in the right way," he mused. "I think both ourselves and Milan want to get through and reach the final, so we’ll look to give everything we’ve got over the two legs to get there.

“As far as we’re concerned, it’s the first leg of a semi-final regardless of the opposition we’ll face.

"It’s inevitable that I would have preferred to play a weaker opponent and have a greater chance of going through.

“Instead, I’d say that both sides have an equal possibility of progressing in the competition."

Juventus, who currently lead Serie A by a solitary point from Milan, will face the Rossoneri again in the league at San Siro later this month.

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has taken a swipe at Juventus general director Beppe Marotta ahead of Wednesday night's Coppa Italia clash between the two sides at San Siro.

Marotta launched a withering attack on referees after his side were denied a penalty in the closing stages of their 0-0 draw at home to Siena on Sunday.

However, Allegri has claimed that he was left utterly bemused by the Bianconeri official's attack on match officials.

"People always say they want to help the referees but then after the first mistake that goes against them, they attack [the referees]," the Rossoneri boss mused ahead of the first leg of the semi-final tie with Juve.

"In one season there will always be decisions for and against, but at the end they even themselves out.

"To reduce to a game to a penalty incident is wrong; we should all be more calm.

"Marotta's words? I do not know what they are borne out of; myself and Milan have a different style."

Addressing Zlatan Ibrahimovic's dismissal against Napoli on Sunday for slapping Salvatore Aronica in the face, Allegri conceded that the Sweden international had been clearly in the wrong but stated that the incident has been blown out of proportion.

"What happened on Sunday was certainly not a nice gesture," the former Cagliari coach admitted. "But you see things like this every Sunday. He paid a little for everyone."

Meanwhile, Allegri revealed that while January signing Maxi Lopez will feature at some point against Juve, the former Catania forward will not start.

The 44-year-old coach also said that injured duo Alexandre Pato and Kevin-Prince Boateng are now just over a week away from returning to first-team duty but added that it is not yet certain when Alberto Aquilani will be ready to make his comeback.

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is eagerly anticipating the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final tie with Juventus at San Siro this Wednesday evening.

The Rossoneri have not won the Italian cup since 2002-03, and Allegri is desperate to guide the Serie A champions to Coppa glory this term.

"The fact that Juve still haven’t lost after 20 Serie A fixtures means that they have a lot of quality," Allegri said in a press conference.

"Juventus have character, all their players show desire and this is the first prerogative to win something important.

"It will be important for us to win or at least do well to not compromise our way through to the final. We want to go all the way in the Coppa Italia."

Allegri then went on to say that Milan are not in crisis, despite their relatively poor form after the winter break.

"At this current moment we must remain calm and focussed on what we have to do on the pitch without getting distracted by what’s being said away from Milanello. It’s not a moment of crisis. Certain results have been lacking but Juventus also drew at home on Sunday."

The previous encounter between Milan and Juventus ended in a 2-0 win for the Bianconeri in a league meeting back in October.

On Wednesday night the two most successful clubs in calcio history go head to head at San Siro, with both AC Milan and Juventus still harbouring hopes of a domestic double. But the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final is just the first of three clashes between the pair over the next six weeks, with an intriguing series of games likely to have a big say in the Scudetto race as well as deciding who goes to Rome on May 20.

With Juventus currently leading the way in Serie A and having a victory over Milan already under their belts this term, they will be in buoyant mood heading to Lombardy, with their 23-game unbeaten streak in all competitions this term on the line.

So what must Milan do to become the first team this season to trump the Bianconeri and make up for their cup exit at this stage last year? We look at five keys to their hopes of gaining a winning lead ahead of the second leg in late March.

DEFEND DEEP

So often this season Juventus have created chance upon chance when being presented with huge gaps into which they can break, whereas most of the sides that have managed to take a point from the Bianconeri have successfully defended with depth.

While this is in stark contrast to Milan’s winning approach, it doesn’t mean it can’t be a profitable one for the league champions. With a great deal less energy to boast in their squad, the Rossoneri must play accordingly. Burning themselves out by chasing the ball high up the pitch can only result in the home side lacking legs later in the game.

ATTACK AT SPEED

Among Milan's plus points is their threat in the attacking third. Yes, they have shown a lack of that clinical edge at times this season, with only Zlatan Ibrahimovic supplying a consistent stream of goals, but when attacking from deep against defences willing to play high, Milan have looked dangerous.

Playing against Juventus, the Rossoneri may well get the space to attack with the verve they showed when occasionally picking apart Barcelona earlier this term. To add to the thrust of Ibrahimovic and Stephan El Shaarawy, it will be worth playing Djamel Mesbah in his more natural slot on the left of midfield to add youthful energy further up the field and pin back Stephan Lichtsteiner.

START WITH SEEDORF

Another string to their bow is the guile of Clarence Seedorf. Approaching his 36th birthday, the Dutchman is increasingly taking on the look of a weathered veteran, but there remains a good reason as to why Massimiliano Allegri has often opted to use the Dutchman in his bigger games as Milan coach.

The four-time Champions League winner has the kind of vision and ability the Rossoneri last had in opposite number Andrea Pirlo, and with the No.21 likely to be a vital part of the visitors’ side once again tonight, Seedorf could prove similarly important to the Diavolo if starting in the trequartista spot.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO HIT IBRA

There is often a negativity pinned to the tactic of playing long balls into channels for a big forward in modern football, but in Ibrahimovic, Milan have one of the best. The ball regularly sticks to Ibra in a way other target men just can’t manage, making him the perfect option when pressure needs to be released.

Against Juventus, this will be no different, with Antonio Conte’s philosophy of a high pressing game having resulted in a huge territorial advantage at times this term. So if Juve exercise a similar stranglehold on the game at San Siro, it will be important for Milan to use their greatest tool to release the pressure and set a high base to bring their livelier forwards into the game.

BEWARE OF THE OLD GUARD

For all of their youth, for all of their energy and dynamism, Juventus’ key men are Andrea Pirlo and Alessandro Del Piero.

Pirlo’s effect has been widely hailed all season, while Del Piero’s impact has been evident on a couple of occasions recently. From his magnificent goal against Roma in the Coppa Italia quarter-final to the lack of threat in his absence against Siena on Sunday, there have been enough examples to show that he still holds an important position in the Juve ranks.

Milan are lucky that they have one of the world’s best centre-backs in Thiago Silva, and will also need Mark van Bommel at the top of his game to ensure that Pirlo is not afforded the space from which he could weave his magic.

There is a good chance that this season's Italian champions will be on show in tonight's Coppa Italia match, with the winners of the Scudetto looking likely to be either Milan or Juventus.

Currently Juve hold a slender one point lead at the top of the table over the Rossoneri, and with Inter and Udinese's respective title pushes beginning to flounder the Serie A title looks set be heading either to Turin or the red half of Milan.

Tonight's game presents the winners with an excellent chance of completing a domestic double, and given home advantage Milan are slight favourites, priced at 2.27 to win with 188Bet while Juve are available at 2.95.

For Milan to progress, of course, they will have to do something that no other team have managed to do this season, namely beat a Juventus side who remain undefeated in all competitions.

The Turin giants have been workmanlike if not spectacular since the resumption after the winter break, but were disappointed to be held by Siena at home at the weekend. Milan too could only draw at home to Napoli on Sunday, a result which followed a shock 2-0 defeat at Lazio.

It is fair to say that neither side are necessarily cruising in top gear despite their league positions. Therefore it looks like the best bet for this game is under 2.5 goals available at 1.73 which offers significant value.

Seven out of Juve's last nine matches have all gone under 2.5 goals, while six out of Milan's last 10 matches have seen two goals or less, including their two most recent games.

The last two meetings between two of the biggest clubs in Italian football have both had two goals or less, and expect another tight, hard-fought match with the price of 1.73 certainly big enough to make it the bet of the day.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been chosen to lead the AC Milan line in their crucial Coppa Italia semi-final first leg clash with Juventus at San Siro this evening.

Despite his impending league suspension for being sent off against Napoli on Sunday, the 30-year-old Swede will be asked to provide the focus for a slightly rotated Rossoneri line-up, with Marco Amelia, Urby Emanuelson and Stephan El Shaarawy among those called into the first XI.

Juve feature club skipper Alessandro Del Piero in their side after his storming performance in the quarter-final win over Roma last month, while new signings Martin Caceres, Simone Padoin and Marco Borriello also start.

The first leg match kicks off at 20.45CET at San Siro.

Juventus give Martin Caceres and Simone Padoin their first starts against Milan’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Stephan El Shaarawy in the Coppa Italia semi-final.

The two sides battling for the Scudetto also go head-to-head in the first leg of the Coppa clash, kick-off 19.45 UK time at San Siro.

The Rossoneri are without a host of star names, but can count on Ibrahimovic, who will miss the Serie A clash with Juventus due to a three-match ban.

Two-goal Martin Caceres was the star of the show as Juventus beat AC Milan 2-1 in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final tie at San Siro on Wednesday night.

Caceres, in his first game back at Juve on loan from Sevilla, fired the Bianconeri ahead on 53 minutes, but Stephan El Shaarawy levelled matters just nine minutes later to restore parity. Caceres' lofted effort in the closing stages proved the decider though, sending the tie to Turin with Juve in the box seat.

The visitors set the pace for much of the first half, taking the game to Milan with their usual fluid style, but after Marco Borriello failed to make the most of two good positions, El Shaarawy got himself into some space deep in Juve territory in one of the first moments of real threat. However, the young forward’s shot from near the byeline flashed just across the face of goal with no Milan team-mate around to tap in the loose ball.

A Juventus attack at pace down the left almost led to a goal at the other end, but after originally slipping, Marcelo Estigarribia leapt back up only to fire just wide of the far post. Moments later Emanuele Giaccherini drifted into space and sent a deflected effort looping towards the top corner of Marco Amelia’s net, but the Milan keeper scrambled across to push the ball over.

Further half chances came and went in the first half as Juve failed to turn their superiority into a half-time lead. But it would take them less than eight minutes to break the deadlock after the restart.

After a surging run forward by Simone Padoin ended in a collision with Thiago Silva, the ball broke for Borriello, whose shot was parried away by Amelia but only into the path of Caceres, who tapped home unchallenged to give his side a deserved lead.

The Rossoneri soon got onto level terms, though. A fantastic left-footed cross on the run from Luca Antonini found Massimo Ambrosini at the far post, and the skipper's cool header back into the centre made it easy for El Shaarawy to side-foot home.

Moments later, the home side thought they'd taken the lead when Zlatan Ibrahimovic beat Marco Storari from eight yards, but the Swede was adjudged to have deliberately handled the ball as it came to him from Mark van Bommel's deflected shot.

Mirko Vucinic passed up a good chance to put Juve back in front after Ambrosini lost the ball to Fabio Quagliarella, and then the Montenegrin failed to make enough space to get a shot away as he was crowded out in the Milan box.

However, the Bianconeri weren't to be denied, as wing-back Caceres bagged a second goal seven minutes from time, lifting a side-foot shot across Amelia into the far corner of the net after Ambrosini failed to clear Giaccherini's searching pass.

The result makes Juventus big favourites to progress ahead of the second leg at Juventus Stadium on March 21, with their unbeaten run in all competitions this season having been stretched to 24 games.

Martin Caceres scored a magnificent brace to give Juventus the 2-1 away victory against Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg.

These two sides are battling for the Scudetto and also go head-to-head in the Coppa. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is suspended for three Serie A games, but that does not apply in other competitions, so he was able to start alongside Stephan El Shaarawy. Antonio Conte’s Juve were still unbeaten and gave Caceres and Simone Padoin their first starts since joining in January, while Andrea Pirlo returned to San Siro as an opponent after 10 years.

El Shaarawy ran on to a long cross-field Daniele Bonera pass and flashed the shot across the face of goal. Marcelo Estigarribia had a couple of chances, but twice fired off target, the second time just wide of the far post after shaking off Philippe Mexes.

Emanuele Giaccherini’s shot took a deflection off Mexes that looped it up, but Marco Amelia did well to fingertip it out from under the crossbar.

Alessandro Del Piero took advantage of a Mark Van Bommel error only to be forced out for a corner.

After the restart, Juventus confirmed their strong performance by taking the lead. Amelia was at full stretch to palm away a Borriello angled drive, but could do nothing on the Caceres follow-up in front of an open goal. As this is the Coppa Italia and a two-legged affair, it could well count as an away goal.

Milan fought back with Storari palming away a fierce Ibrahimovic free kick, but Clarence Seedorf’s set piece was well off target. Del Piero smashed an angled drive across the face of goal to skim the far post, but Milan equalised moments later.

Massimo Ambrosini knocked down a Luca Ambrosini cross for El Shaarawy to side-foot home from six yards.

Del Piero dribbled into the box and hesitated, eventually stopped short by Mexes. Conte changed both strikers simultaneously, introducing Fabio Quagliarella and Mirko Vucinic.

Ibrahimovic had the ball in the back of the net, but the whistle had already gone for a handling offence as he controlled the deflected Van Bommel shot from the edge of the box. Ibra then pounced on an Andrea Barzagli error and fought his way past Leonardo Bonucci, but Giorgio Chiellini threw himself at the finish from close range.

Juve also threatened a second, as the Vucinic shot was only parried by an uncertain Amelia and Ambrosini dived in to prevent Quagliarella completing the chance. Vucinic also turned between a crowd of defenders, but couldn’t get the final touch.

Caceres made a spectacular return to the Juventus jersey, as he completed his brace with a wonderful strike. The Uruguayan pounced on a poor clearance and curled a magnificent finish into the top corner that left Amelia rooted to the spot.

El Shaarawy's attempt was deflected off target by teammate Robinho and after the final whistle there was a scuffle between players.

Martin Caceres scored twice as Juventus beat AC Milan at the San Siro to take control of their Coppa Italia semi-final.

Stephan El Shaarawy had brought the hosts level just after the hour mark in the first leg only for Uruguayan Caceres to net a superb late winner for the Serie A leaders.

Milan, Juve's closest challengers in the league, were second best for much of the contest, although Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a second-half strike disallowed.

Marco Borriello fired an early shot wide for the visitors, while at the other end Clarence Seedorf was also off target from long range.

El Shaarawy should have put Milan in front in the 16th minute, but could only place his shot wide from inside the six-yard box.

It was Juve, though, who were looking the most threatening with Marcelo Estigarribia twice shooting narrowly wide of the right post.

Emanuele Giaccherni then had an effort from outside the area tipped over the bar by Marco Amelia.

The Turin side continued to look the most likely after the break with Borriello forcing another diving save from Amelia.

But the keeper could do nothing about Caceres' 53rd-minute opener as he followed up to tap home after Amelia had down well to keep out Borriello's effort.

Alessandro Del Piero almost made it two with a shot which flashed just wide, but instead Milan levelled in the 62nd minute.

El Shaarawy nodded home from close ranger after getting on the end of Massimo Ambrosini's header.

Ibrahimovic had a goal disallowed seven minutes later and Mark van Bommel shot wide as Milan suddenly looked like the most likely winners.

But Caceres stuck a fantastic second in the 83rd minute, picking out the top left-hand corner with a right-footed shot from outside the area.

Robinho fired wide in stoppage time as Milan looked for another leveller, but Juve held on to have one foot in the final.

In the world of European football, it's usually dangerous to become attached to players. There are plenty of exceptions though, meaning there are plenty of players who stay with clubs for long periods of time. But, by and large, most players spend their careers playing at several different teams, rarely being immune to a transfer.

It's hard, as a fan, to see a player one really likes shipped away with very little notice. One day you hear a rumor, and then before you know it your beloved is in another city, putting on some other team's jersey.

It's even worse when the player is one who is on loan at your team. The player first wins you over, and you hope the team signs him permanently. As the end of the season (and the player's loan) nears, you hope and hope (with an ever-growing sense of futility) that the team will sign him outright. Sometimes, it happens. Usually, it does not.

That was the case with Martin Caceres. He was one of the few players I enjoyed watching two years ago, and when Juventus did not sign him, I was disappointed. I still kept up hope that he would one day return. Several transfer windows came and went without any such move.

Then, this year, during the great Conte Renaissance, it happened. The rumor mill began to spit out the possibility of Caceres returning to Juve. Beppe Marotta haggled with Sevilla (Caceres' most recent club) for weeks and even flirted with the possibility of signing Fredy Guarin, the Colombian midfielder who signed for Inter recently from Porto.

Thankfully, the deal went through. Caceres had returned to Turin, and I was thrilled.

Caceres finally got his return to the Bianconeri squad today against A.C. Milan. Antonio Conte returned to his 3-5-2, which is almost becoming more commonplace than the 4-3-3. Caceres took Lichtsteiner's role at right wing back. Meanwhile, Andrea Barzagli, Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci all started as center backs.

All three performed very well. Bonucci did not bring too much attention to himself, but lately most of that attention has been negative, so this was not a bad thing. There were a few slip-ups by Barzagli and Bonucci, but Chiellini came through each time.

For example, at one point late in the match, Barzagli gave the ball up to Milan's star infant Zlatan Ibrahimovic. This was right by Juve's goal, and Ibra had just enough time to crack off a fierce effort.

Unfortunately for Ibra, Chiellini (filling the "Superman" role in Gigi Buffon's absence) dove in and blocked the shot. It was another moment that epitomized Chiellini's grinta. In fact, one could argue that Chiellini has set a maximum in terms of grinta. He's the grittiest man in the world.

That moment was also the epitome of the battle between Ibrahimovic and Chiellini. Ibrahimovic had some chances, but usually Chiellini shut him down. Chiellini has had Ibrahimovic's number for some time, and he reinforced that today.

Ibrahimovic did score a goal, but it was called off because he had handled the ball before striking it. Later, there was a goal kick awarded to Juve, though it seemed that Marco Storari may have touched the ball. The call infuriated the Swede, and he confronted Storari and the referee after the game. It was typical behavior out of Milan's star.

Juve's midfield was also quite successful. Caceres and Marcello Estigarribia were on the right and left flanks, respectively. Debutant Simone Padoin started in central midfield along with Andrea Pirlo and Emanuele Giaccherini. Padoin had a good debut and showed why Conte signed him: his hard work and his ability. Later, Padoin was subbed off for Luca Marrone.

Pirlo had a fantastic match, much as he did in the last game against Siena. Pirlo's play is usually at a very high standard, and there's not much that hasn't already been said about his importance to the team. Giaccherini was also his usual dangerous self and helped set up the second goal.

The starting strikers had two contrasting performances. Marco Borriello struggled to be productive and didn't really contribute that much to Juve's attack. To his credit, he was fouled many times (without the fouls being called) and he also worked very hard during the match.

At one point, after Clarence Seedorf intercepted a pass, Borriello chased him all the way down to midfield and forced him to give up possession. Borriello certainly has not had a hard time showing his desire to succeed, but he has had a hard time producing for Juve.

On the other hand, Alessandro Del Piero had a great game. He petered out a bit at the second half, but he was one of the biggest factors in Juve's attacking movements during the second half. His touch was especially strong tonight, and he managed to outfox Milan players on several opportunities.

Now on to the goals. The first one came off of a deflected Borriello effort, which started from a Simone Padoin pass. The deflected shot landed near the goal and Caceres ran over to knock it in. It was a nice moment to see Caceres score on his re-debut.

Things would get even nicer later, but before that, things got worse. A.C. Milan equalized off of a Stephan El Shaarawy goal, and this led to a period where Juve's defense was a bit unhinged. This stretch was only temporary though, and Juve soon got back into form.

The game remained at a tie for about twenty minutes, and then something magical happened. Giaccherini was in Milan's half with tons of space, and he crossed the ball into the box. Massimo Ambrosini (who had an awful game) weakly headed the ball out of the box, and Caceres once again found the ball. He steadied the ball and brilliantly fired it into the top corner of the net. It was a very classy goal. More than that, it was the conclusion of a great return for Caceres.

Earlier, I tweeted that the second goal was the one of those moments that reminds me why I love Juve and football. It really was a special goal. In fact, I actually gave Caceres a standing ovation in my house. My dogs were pretty pissed about that one.

After today's win, Juventus has defeated A.C. Milan twice this season. They have another league match against Milan in two weeks, and of course the second leg of the Coppa semifinal. The league game will be at the San Siro, but the return match for the semi-final is at Juventus Stadium.

Before that, Juventus have three matches in seven days. The games are against Bologna, Parma (making up for the snowed out game) and Catania. These are the small teams that Juve have struggled to defeat. A win against Milan in a few weeks would be big for Juve, but it's just as important to secure wins against these three teams.

It's a good thing that Conte has players like Martin Caceres.

Marco Amelia 5.0 - While Juventus bossed the opening period, Abbiati’s understudy did not really have much to do but he did very well to tip over Giaccherini’s deflected effort at a time at which the Bianconeri were really pressing. However, he should have done better with Borriello's shot for Caceres' first goal and hardly covered himself in glory in trying to deal with the Uruguayan's second, a curling effort from the edge of the area.

Daniele Bonera 5.0 - Poor showing from the former Parma man. Made absolutely no impression going forward and went missing when the ball was played through for Juventus' opener.

Luca Antonini 5.5 - Spent most of the first half on the back foot but got forward well in the second period and set up the equaliser with a fine overlap down the left wing before standing the ball up brilliantly to the back post. Also had a great surge out of defence towards the end before earning his side a corner. However, he was playing everyone on when Juve broke for the winner.

Philippe Mexes 5.0 - Started again in place of the injured Nesta and again had horribly shaky moments. Indeed, he was completely wrongfooted by Del Piero midway through the first half before then going AWOL when Caceres put Juve in front for the first time. Also booked for a crude challenge on Borriello.

Thiago Silva 5.5 - Not his best evening in a Milan jersey by any stretch of the imagination but then, he was hardly helped by those around him. The Brazilian showed some characteristically classy touches and also dealt well with Borriello.

Clarence Seedorf 5.0 - Started just in behind El Shaarawy and Ibrahimovic but did not really link well with his forwards at all. Indeed, a number of first-half attacks broke down once the ball reached the Dutch veteran. His most noteworthy moment was a volley from the edge of the area which always looked to be going wide.

Massimo Ambrosini 5.5 - Showed his battling qualities throughout, most notably when he did remarkably well under pressure to earn himself a corner in the first half. But he looked off the pace for the most part, as evidenced by his booking for pulling back Caceres as the Uruguayan was racing away from him. Credit must go to him for his cushioned header across goal for El Shaarawy but then, at the same time he repeatedly gave the ball away in dangerous areas late on and it was his poor clearance which Caceres took advantage of to claim the winning goal.

Mark van Bommel 5.5 - Tried gamely to put himself about and made a number of crunching tackles – some of which were legal; others, not so much. But, overall, his passing was poor and he again looked to be struggling to keep up with play.

Urby Emanuelson 5.0 - Was actually one of Milan’s brighter attacking players in the first half – but that is really saying absolutely nothing at all. Some neat touches during the game but ultimately failed to make anything to happen – as per usual - before being hauled off midway through the second half.

Stephan El Shaarawy 6.0 - Got the nod ahead of Maxi Lopez alongside Ibrahimovic up top but did nothing in the first half to justify his inclusion. Was full of running, in fairness, but squandered the one decent opening which came his way. However, like any good striker he was the right place at the right time when Ambrosini nodded Antonini’s cross back the goal and took his chance with real conviction.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic 5.0 - Selected to start in light of his imminent three-match ban for slapping Salvatore Aronica but made no impression on the game in the first half. In his defence, he saw absolutely no quality ball. Ended up looking just as frustrated as he had against Napoli on Sunday. Came to life after Milan fell behind and instigated the attack which led to the equaliser with a nicely-weighted ball for Antonini. Was unlucky to then see what could have been a winner for Milan ruled out for an handball.

• Substitutions

Maxi López 5.5 - Thrown on in the closing stages for van Bommel. Was caught just offside after being slipped in by Ibra but looked to have blown the chance anyway. The Argentine then got himself booked for a reckless tackle on Giaccherini in injury time.

Robinho 5.0 - Replaced Emanuelson in the second half but made no impact on the game. Indeed, his most memorable contribution was a dreadful corner which failed to clear Giaccherini, who was standing ten yards away.

Juventus

Marco Storari 6.0 - A virtual spectator in the first half, Storari got down well to deal with Ibrahimovic’s bouncing free kick when called upon for the first time 10 minutes into the second half. Had no chance with Milan's equaliser and was rarely troubled in the closing stages.

Andrea Barzagli 6.5 - Made a couple of tremendous blocks for Juve when they were under the cosh in the second period and also played some nice balls out of defence, the best of which very nearly put Del Piero in on goal during the first half.

Giorgio Chiellini 6.5 - Solid enough showing from the versatile Italy international, who made a number of timely interceptions.

Leonardo Bonucci 5.5 - Undoubtedly the weak link at the back for Juventus, on account of his suspect positioning and dodgy control, but hard to fault his commitment or effort.

M. Cáceres 8.0 - What a second debut for the Uruguayan! He was playing well anyway before he came up with two goals for the Bianconeri. Indeed, he worked the right flank well throughout the first half before then popping up to slot home the opener. His winner was truly sensational, the former Sevilla man curling the ball home from the edge of the area.

Andrea Pirlo 6.0 - Not his best game for Juve but, in terms of passing and creativity, he was head and shoulders above any Milan midfielder on the park. Lost the ball a few times but still instigated countless Juve attacks and was always pressing and probing.

Emanuele Giaccherini 6.5 - His final ball wasn't always great but Giaccherini was a constant thorn in Milan's side. He should have done better when presented with a fine opening during the first half but he played a key role in Juve's winner. A dynamic if occasionally frustrating display.

Marcelo Alejandro Estigarribia 6.0 - Worked tirelessly throughout and rarely put a foot wrong without ever really catching the eye.

Simone Padoin 6.0 - Was pretty prominent in the first half and it was he who made the break through the middle before being bundled over by Thiago Silva when Juve opened the scoring. However, he faded as the game went on and was eventually replaced.

Alessandro Del Piero 6.0 - Looked very bright early on and caused Mexes plenty of problems with his fancy footwork and ingenuity. However, when he got the chance to break clear in the second half, it was clear that he just doesn't have the legs anymore. He was hauled off moments later.

Marco Borriello 5.5 - Started promisingly enough but then spent most of the first half throwing himself to the floor and the merest hint of contact. Still, Caceres opened the scoring after Amelia had failed to hold on to Borriello's low strike. However, it was to be the on-loan Roma forward's last meaningful contribution.

Luca Marrone 5.5 - Came on in the second period but did not really have a big impact on the game.

Fabio Quagliarella 5.5 - Got himself quickly involved after replacing Del Piero but his most notable contribution was a reckless challenge on Thiago Silva which earned him a booking.

Mirko Vučinić 6.0 - Came on at the same time as Quagliarella, in place of Borriello, and saw plenty of the ball, forcing Amelia into a save with a side-footed effort from the edge of the area before putting Giaccherini away in the lead-up to the winner.

Antonio Conte pleased with players' response against AC Milan

Juventus coach is happy that the newly-introduced players turned in a good display

and warned his men against complacency in the return leg.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has hailed his side's display in the 2-1 Coppa Italia victory at AC Milan.

A second-half Martin Caceres brace either side of a Stephan El Shaarawy goal gave a much-changed Juve side an important lead in the semi-final tie.

"I am pleased with the response from every player who stepped on to the pitch in a match as important as this one," he told RAI Sport.

"The team gave a good response to what I had asked from them. Besides the result, the introduction of new players was also important, and they played well."

Caceres was the man of the match on his return to Juventus, but Conte noted that the Uruguayan defender still has a lot to improve.

"Caceres needs to do better in terms of defensive actions, but when it comes to his attacking movement I have nothing to complain about," Conte added.

Despite Juventus' lead for the return leg on March 21, Conte insists that his side have not yet secured a place in the final.

"The tie is still open because Milan are a good side who still have something to say," he added.

"We are anticipating a very hard second-leg to get a place in the final."

Allegri tells AC Milan to remain calm after Juventus defeat

The Italian coach admitted his side are going through a poor run of form

but stressed there is no reason to panic as the club can turn the situation around.

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has advised his players to stay calm after the 2-1 Coppa Italia defeat against Juventus.

The Bianconeri have one foot in the final after Martin Caceres sealed a dream return to the club with two goals on either side of a Stephan El Shaarawy strike in the first leg of the semi-final tie at San Siro.

This was Milan's second defeat in the last two games, but Allegri is refusing to hit the panic button.

"We suffered the second goal in a naive way," he told RAI Sport. "It is a shame to lose a match in which we played well, just like Juventus did.

"Qualification is harder now, but nothing is compromised. We have lost a few too many times recently, but we must remain calm and confident about our own strength.

"We have lost so many players and many others have not been able to get proper rest.

"There is no pressure on us, because I know the strength of the team. We must continue to work to get out of this situation."

Milan, who are one point behind Juventus in Serie A, will travel to Udinese on Saturday.

Conte hails Juve squad

Antonio Conte insists Milan are still in the race for a Coppa Italia Final spot, but was “pleased with the response” from his Juventus players.

The Bianconeri won 2-1 at San Siro in the first leg of their semi-final this evening, even though they rotated their squad.

“I was pleased with the response from all the lads who stepped on to the field in an important game like the semi-final against Milan,” said Conte.

“It’s not just the result that counts, but the introduction of the newcomers who had a great game. Simone Padoin already knew certain tactical movements because I worked with him at Atalanta.

“Martin Caceres needs to do better in defensive terms, but I really cannot complain about his attacking movement tonight.”

Caceres scored both of Juve’s goals on his first start for the club since moving from Sevilla last month.

“I think this victory shows what hard work is behind the team, which allows us to rotate the squad without damaging the performance. I have to above all thank the players who don’t get as much space, but work hard all week anyway.

“This team has players who want to dream and know in order to achieve that dream they need to work, work, work.”

Juventus have a 2-1 away win in the first leg, so Milan must win in Turin and score at least two goals to qualify.

“The tie is still open, because Milan are a great team who can still have their say in the Coppa Italia,” added Conte.

“We have a very important second leg coming up and still have to earn this Final.”

Allegri: 'Too many defeats'

Massimiliano Allegri has urged Milan to “stay calm” after their Coppa Italia defeat to Juventus, even if “we have lost a few too many times recently.”

The Rossoneri are struggling in Serie A and this evening fell to a 2-1 home defeat in the semi-final first leg.

“We conceded the second goal in a very naive way. It’s a shame to lose a game that we had played well in the second half, although Juventus did too,” Allegri told RAI Sport.

“After the equaliser we pushed forward with too much passion and were punished on the counter-attack. The qualification for the Final is an uphill struggle now, but nothing has been compromised.

“We have lost a few too many times recently, but must stay calm and confident of our own abilities, especially as we have an injury crisis on our hands and many players cannot rest the way they ought to.

“There is no pressure on us, because I know the strength of my squad. We’ve got to continue working to emerge from this situation.”

Caceres fits into Juve puzzle

Martin Caceres isn’t surprised by the instant impact he’s made at Juventus. “I fit in well here,” he stated.

The Uruguayan made his second 'debut' for the club last night after he joined the outfit on loan from Sevilla last night.

The defender, who spent the 2009-10 season in Turin, was used as a right-wing back against Milan and he scored both in the 2-1 win.

“I fit in really well with the plans of boss Antonio Conte,” he told Rai after the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final.

“I’m really happy with my performance, but also for the whole team because we’ve clinched an important victory.”

Oddly enough, Caceres also scored on his first debut for the club in a 2-0 victory at Lazio back in September 2009.
