Torino are down to 10 men after Kamil Glik’s straight red and Andrea Pirlo missed a penalty in the first half of a dramatic Turin Derby.

The Derby della Mole returned to Serie A for the first time since 2009 and it was the debut derby for the Juventus Stadium. The Bianconeri were feeling the pressure after their defeat to Milan cut their lead at the top of the table to just two points. Martin Caceres was injured and Giorgio Chiellini was a late addition to the absentee list with a calf problem that flared up again, so Juve changed to a 4-3-3. Arturo Vidal and Kwadwo Asamoah were rested ahead of the Shakhtar Donetsk visit. Torino had a full squad to choose from and opted for Alessio Cerci flanking Rolando Bianchi in a 4-2-4 system.

Mario Alberto Santana fired straight into the arms of Gigi Buffon, but Riccardo Meggiorini went close when he trapped a long ball to go past Leonardo Bonucci and the flick over an on-rushing Buffon whistled just wide of the empty net. Mirko Vucinic got on the end of an Andrea Pirlo free kick, but the finish was deflected inches past the near post.

There was controversy on 26 minutes when Jean-Francois Gillet spilled a Paolo De Ceglie cross under pressure from Paul Pogba and Angelo Ogbonna, but the referee awarded a foul on the goalkeeper. Replays suggest if anyone made contact with Gillet, it was his teammate Ogbonna.

Belgian shot-stopper Gillet spilled another effort, a fierce long-range Pogba snapshot on the volley. The Torino goalkeeper did considerably better on a Pogba screamer from 20 metres, punching it out from under the crossbar.

Rolando Bianchi wasted a counter-attack by trying to lob Buffon from midfield, missing the target.

The game changed on 35 minutes when Torino defender Kamil Glik was shown a straight red card for going through Emanuele Giaccherini. It was a high sliding tackle with studs up on the standing ankle.

It got even worse for Toro when Migjen Basha slipped and in doing so handled the ball to stop Pogba getting a shot away. However, Pirlo stepped up and surprisingly missed the penalty by firing well over the bar. It was a remarkable mistake from one of Italy’s most reliable set-piece specialists.

Substitute Valerio Di Cesare, who had come on as a replacement for the red-carded Glik, got into a row with Sebastian Giovinco.

Bianconeri bounce back against 10-man Granata

The Old Lady ran out comfortable winners in the first Turin derby in three years

thanks to an inspired display Sebastion Giovinco and a double from Claudio Marchisio.

Juventus got back to winning ways against their local rivals with a convincing 2-0 win over Torino in the Serie A.

Goals from Sebastian Giovinco and a pair from Claudio Marchisio was enough for the hosts to come away with all three points against a Granata side who were forced to play almost an hour of the game with ten men after the sending off of Kamil Glik.

The Italian champions lined up with in a 4-3-3 formation, with Paul Pogba coming into midfield for the injured Arturo Vidal while Giorgio Chiellini had to settle for a place on the bench after only returning ot full fitness late in the week.

Torino entered the derby having not beaten their more illustrious rivals for 17 years, however, it was they who started the brighter of the sides, enjoying the better share possession in the opening ten minutes.

Despite settling into the game faster than their hosts, the Granata had to wait until after twenty minutes before they had their first clear-cut chance at goal. Riccardo Meggiorini got in beyond Andrea Barzagli and while he had Buffon beaten his flicked effort went wide of the post.

Juventus did eventually grow into the game and started to create chances of their own, their first one falling to Paul Pogba who gained possession in the box with Torino goalkeeper Jean-Francois Gillet on the ground, however, the referee adjudged him to have commited a foul before it came to anything.

Five minutes later it was the Frenchman again who threatened when he sent in a half-volley from outside the box but Gillet did well to touch it over the bar. Just moments later, Pogba then hit a specatucular shot from all of 30 yards but again Gillet was equal to it.

The complexion of the match changed completely on 36 minutes when Torino's Kamil Glik was given his marching orders for a wild high-footed tackle on Emmanuele Giaccherini.

With the numerical advantage, Juventus pushed further forward to search for the opener and they recieved a great opportunity when Pogba went down in the box and they were awarded a penalty. Incredibly however, Andrea Pirlo's missed the target completely from just 12 yards out.

At half-time Angelo Alessio decided to bring on Nicklas Bendtner for Giaccherini and it was the Dane whose flicked heard from Mirko Vucinic's cross set up Pogba with a golden chance on the six-yard box but he could not direct his effort on target.

Just as they ended the first half, Juventus were pouring forward and it was Pirlo who came closest next with a stinging long range drive which Gillet needed two attempts to gather.

The game was being literally played within the Torino half at this stage with Sebastian Giovinco causing all sorts of problems around the visitor's penalty area. And, it was the diminutive Italian whose great cross was met by Claudio Marchisio who finally broke the deadlock to put the Old Lady ahead just before the hour mark.

Despite going up a goal, refusing to rest on their laurels Juventus continued to attack Torino with Pirlo, Pogba and Bendtner all registering attempts on goal before Marchisio, in a similar position to the goal he scored, failed to latch on to another Giovinco cross.

But, it was Giovinco himself who soon got on the scoresheet and deservedly so. The Turin-born striker received the ball this time from Marchisio and he lashed the ball hom from inside the box after nicely cutting in on his right foot.

Two goals to the good, the Old Lady refused to settle down still and they could have had a third just moments later when Pogba again rose highest in the box but again Gillet denied the young midfielder.

Fifteen minutes from time, it was Bendtner who was next with an opportunity to extend the home side's lead and he should have done much better having being set up beautifully by Vucinic with a chance within the six-yard box yet somehow Gillet ended up with the ball safely in his hands.

With the game starting to resemble a training match for champions, Giovinco was brought off for Alessandro Matri but there was still time for one more as Marchisio notched his second of the night to all but seal victory.

After suffering their second defeat in the space of a month last weekend at the hands of AC Milan, Juventus will be happy to return to winning ways while Torino may be left with much to ponder after having started but whose task was made much harder after they were reduced to ten men.

Giovinco got the second for Juventus, running on to a Marchisio pass down the right side of the box and blasting his angled drive between Danilo D’Ambrosio’s legs into the far bottom corner.

Pogba nearly made it 3-0 moments later, but his header was parried by Gillet’s legs from six yards. The goalkeeper also denied Bendtner his debut goal for Juventus, as Vucinic and Marchisio flicked it on for the Dane to fire straight at Gillet from point-blank range.

Santana pounced on a misplaced pass and went on the counter, charged down by Andrea Barzagli’s hand, but the referee waved play on and insisted it ricocheted off his foot, so could not be considered intentional.

Marchisio did extend the advantage by completing his brace in the final minutes. Vucinic used his chest to knock down an Alessandro Matri cross for the midfielder to smash a low finish past Gillet.

Marchisio inspires Juve to derby spoils

Local boy Claudio Marchisio scored twice as Juventus beat 10-man Torino 3-0

in the Turin derby to extend their lead at the top of Serie A to five points.

Turin-born Claudio Marchisio scored twice as Juventus saw off the challenge of 10-man Torino to extend their lead at the top of Serie A to five points.

Following a red card for Kamil Glik in the 36th minute, it seemed to be only a matter of time before Juve struck.

After Andrea Pirlo missed a penalty, Marchisio broke the deadlock in the 57th minute with Sebastian Giovinco adding a second 10 minutes later.

Marchisio wrapped up victory five minutes from time as the Bianconeri returned to winning ways and warmed up for a trip to Ukraine on Wednesday, when they face Shakhtar Donetsk in a decisive Champions League fixture.

Torino started the brighter and had the first chance when Riccardo Meggiorini got in behind the Juve defence, but he touched his shot past Gianluigi Buffon and wide of the far post.

Paul Pogba was prevented from putting Juve in front in the 26th minute when he was presented with the ball in a good position after Angelo Ogbonna and goalkeeper Jean-Francois Gillet clashed, but the official said he had committed a foul.

Pogba twice tested Gillet with powerful shots from distance, the first from just outside the penalty area was fumbled by the Torino goalkeeper and put behind for a corner by a defender while the second, from 35 yards, was punched over.

The complexion of the game changed in the 36th minute when Glik was shown a straight red card for a dangerous lunge at Emanuele Giaccherini.

Juve had the chance to go in front five minutes later, but Andrea Pirlo ballooned his penalty after Migjen Basha handled the ball in the area, and was lucky not to be shown a second yellow card.

Torino resisted until half-time but it was not long before their defence was breached.

Pogba headed a seemingly easy chance over the bar from five yards out in the 49th minute, but Juve's pressure finally told in the 57th minute when Marchisio dived in bravely to head in a cross from the right.

Ten minutes later Giovinco wrapped up victory with a well-struck shot beyond the reach of Gillet.

Pogba was denied again in the 70th minute as Gillet saved instinctively with his legs from the Frenchman's header before Nicklas Bendtner shot straight at the goalkeeper.

Torino bravely tried to respond, but Marchisio's second goal of the game, a mirror of Giovinco's goal from the other side of the penalty area, ended their hopes in the 84th minute.

Marchisio has Old Lady singing again

Juventus defeated city rivals Torino 3-0 at the Juventus Stadium on Saturday night in Serie A.

Two goals from Claudio Marchiso, and another Sebastian Giovinco gave the Bianconeri the win. Torino also had Kamil Glik sent off in the first half for a reckless challenge.

Mirko Vucinic had the first opportunity in the first three minutes when his header flashed wide, at the other end Mario Santana saw his a low drive go straight at Gigi Buffon.

Riccardo Meggiorini nearly gave Torino the lead but his chipped effort went inches wide of the upright. Paul Pogba then tested out Jean Francois Gillet from distance on two occassions.

The first effort was a low dipping shot which Gillet spilled, then the second was a thunderbolt from which the Belgian keeper parried over the crossbar.

With Nine minutes to go in the first half Torino were reduced to ten men when Kamil Glik was sent off for a terrible challenge on Emanuele Giaccherini.

Then just before half time Juventus were awarded a penalty when Migjen Basha brought down Paul Pogba. However Andrea Pirlo missed, blazing the spot kick over the bar.

Paul Pogba and Leonardo Bonucci both headed over in the opening minutes of the second half. But the opening goal of the game came nine minutes into the second period as a Giovinco cross was brilliantly headed in by Marchisio who ghosted past his marker.

It was 2-0 to Juventus after 67 minutes when an angled drive from Giovinco whistled past Gillet. Paul Pogba and Nicklas Bendtner then were brilliantly denied by Jean Francois Gillet who made two fantastic point blank saves.

Juventus continued to dictate the tempo and pinned the away side in their own half.

The third was added with six minutes remaining when Mirko Vucinic casually chested the ball to the on-rushing Marchisio who hit a low left footed drive into the far corner.

Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon - Had very little to do in the match but was there when called upon saving low to deny Torino their best chance through Meggiorini in the first half.

Paolo De Ceglie - Didn't have too much to do in terms of defending and in the second half was substituted as Juve looked to put the Granata to the sword.

Andrea Barzagli - Looked solid and very comfortable even attempted a shot from about 40 yards, though the less said about it better.

Leonardo Bonucci - Another defender who had a quiet night, professional performance and dealt with trouble when he needed to.

Stephan Lichtsteiner - Could have dealt with the threat of Santana better allowed him too much room to get crosses into the box which on another day could have cost his side.

Paul Pogba - Looked one of Juventus' brightest players, attempted a few excellent shots from long range and won his side the penalty. Generally was a nuisance to the Granata back line.

Claudio Marchisio - An absolute superb performance from the Italy international who netted with two second-half strikes. Showed great anticipation to get on the end of a tantalising Giovinco cross and bullet a header past Gillet. Then drilled a low shot past the despairing keeper to complete the Bianconeri's night.

Andrea Pirlo - Not his best game and perhaps looked jaded from the recent run of challenging games. Put in a couple of good deliveries and teasing balls but missed a penalty, blazing over the bar to Gillet's - and everyone's - surprise.

Emanuele Giaccherini - Had an intriguing battle with D'Ambrosio before swapping over to the left-hand side where he was less effective. Looked tricky and direct at times but couldn't deliver a final telling ball when it mattered. Hooked at half-time.

Mirko Vučinić - The striker assisted Marchisio for the Italian's second goal but will be disappointed with his overall performance as he never really tested Gillet himself.

Sebastian Giovinco - A stunning second-half display from the 'Atomic Ant' who was a constant thorn of the visitors defence. Put in plenty of good balls from the right and got on the scoresheet with a lovely right-foot finish. Staked his claim for a start against Shakhtar.

Substitutions

Kwadwo Asamoah - Came on done well and put in a few good teasing deliveries the game was already over though and it was difficult for him to really make an impact.

Nicklas Bendtner - Came on at half-time and had a great chance to open his account for the Bianconeri but fired his shot straight at Gillet. Another frustrating night for the Denmark international.

Torino

Jean-François Gillet - Despite conceding three goals, it could have been a lot more if it wasn't for a number of blocks and saves which he made. Can be pleased with his performance despite being on the losing side.

Danilo D'Ambrosio - Did well in the first half to nullify the threat of Giaccherini on the right but was up against it in the second with the visitors down to 10 and Giovinco moved to the right.

Angelo Obinze Ogbonna - Put in a good shift and was kept very busy throughout the 90 minutes did well with the threat of Vucinic in the first half and got in plenty of blocks but it was a backs-to-the-wall display in the second and tried his best to limit the damage.

Kamil Glik - Shown a red card midway through the first half for what the ref deemed a reckless challenge. He may feel slightly aggrieved as he did get the ball but it was high and dangerous. Had been a commanding presence up until then.

Matteo Darmian - The right-back did reasonably well as the hosts failed to find any joy down the left-hand side in the first half but the second proved a different story as Juve bombarded men forward.

Migjen Xhevat Basha - Gave away the penalty which Pirlo missed for Juve and was largely ineffective in the second half as the hosts dominated the midfield.

Mario Alberto Santana - Started promisingly, providing a lot of width to Torino and created a couple of chances but couldn't really get into the match in the second.

Alessio Cerci - Looked lively in the first half for the visitors, sprayed some lovely passes about and made it difficult for the Juve defence as he got himself into some promising positions. The turning point was the red card though and he had a very quiet game after that.

Alessandro Carlo Gazzi - Like his team-mate Basha, he really struggled in the second half as Juve came forward time and time again. Could not provide any attacks either.

Rolando Bianchi - Sacrificed in the second half as Torino looked to limit the damage the hosts could do. Had an attempt in the first 45 but was largely anonymous throughout.

Substitutions

Valerio Di Cesare - Came on after Glik was shown a red card was always going to be a difficult night for the substitute and so it proved up against the lively Giovinco.

Alen Stevanovic - Came on for Bianchi but hardly got a sniff of goal as Torino struggled to provide the service to the striker.

Marchisio: 'Juve academy works'

Claudio Marchisio thinks it’s “a great sign” that he and fellow Juventus academy product Sebastian Giovinco scored in the Derby della Mole.

Marchisio bagged a brace and Giovinco got one in tonight’s 3-0 victory over city rivals Torino – a special occasion, as both were born and bred in Turin.

“It’s important that we got back to winning ways after a bad performance against Milan. It’s good for our confidence to win so convincingly,” said the midfielder.

“It’s a great sign that Giovinco and I both scored, as we grew up in the Juve youth academy.

“Now we have notched up important points that ensure we stay top of the table, we have to turn our attention to the Champions League.”

The Bianconeri travel to Ukraine and need a point against Shakhtar Donetsk to be sure of qualification, knocking out Champions League holders Chelsea.

Alessio: 'Dismissal changed derby'

Angelo Alessio concedes the red card “changed the game” and is glad the Derby della Mole was his last Serie A match before Antonio Conte’s return.

The Juventus assistant manager will have one more evening on the touchline in the Champions League on Wednesday evening against Shakhtar Donetsk, but next weekend Conte’s ban in the betting scandal will have expired.

“Conte will certainly be on the bench next time in Serie A. It’s the right moment for him to return,” smiled Alessio.

The Bianconeri ran out 3-0 winners tonight, but only after Kamil Glik’s straight red card for a studs-up tackle on Emanuele Giaccherini’s ankle.

“The red card changed the game, but it was also an inevitable decision from the referee.”

Giorgio Chiellini pulled out with a calf problem, prompting Juve to adopt a different 4-3-3 system.

“We have a basic system, which is the 3-5-2, but Chiellini did not feel ready to come back and asked for more time to fully recover so he can be fit for Wednesday. We did well with the four-man defence too.

“Paul Pogba made a few mistakes, but he is growing and showed some great things tonight. We need a great performance in the Champions League and must go for the victory.”

Ventura: 'Game ended with Glik'

Giampiero Ventura feels Torino “embarrassed Juventus, but the game ended after Kamil Glik’s red card.”

The Granata were forced to play with 10 men for almost an hour when Glik was sent off for a studs-up tackle on Emanuele Giaccherini’s ankle.

“Our game ended after Glik’s red card, as we simply weren’t able to play with 10 men,” said the Coach following Toro’s 3-0 defeat.

“However, in the first half we embarrassed Juventus. We were taking over more of the field and playing well, then that incident changed everything.

“Glik’s tackle was certainly determined, but if he gets the ball then it is not a red card. I don’t want to get into the decision itself. We accept it and move on.”

What We Learned from Juve's 3-0 Win in the Turin Derby

Juventus came into the game against their cross-town rivals Torino in dire need of a win after consecutive letdowns against Lazio and AC Milan.

After a mediocre first half that saw Andrea Pirlo miss a penalty and Torino get reduced to ten men, the Bianconeri picked up the pace and put three goals past Torino stopper Jean-François Gillet.

It wasn't the most inspired performance from Juventus, but it did provide us with a lot of insights regarding Antonio Conte's men, and the 3-0 score line will keep the Bianconeri on top of the Serie A table while offering some momentum ahead of the all-important UEFA Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Here's what we learned from tonight's game.

Il Grande Torino Back Where They Belong

Before I say anything, I just want to make clear how glad I am that Torino is back in the Serie A.

Casual fans of the game might not know this, but this club was the best team in Italy for a long time and was at one point widely considered to be the best team in the world.

In fact, if I had to pick the most dominant side in football history, I'd go with Il Grande Torino right before the Superga air disaster.

Despite playing with just 10 men the entire second half, Torino showed that they belong in the Serie A tonight. They have a lot of talent on their roster and just too much class and history not to be a part of Italy's top division.

The Turin derby is a game lots of fans look forward to, and these games always offer something.

So in summary: let's all pray Torino is here to stay.

Slump or No Slump, Juventus Need Claudio Marchisio

Coming into this game, Claudio Marchisio was experiencing a major drop in form. He'd put in bad performances against Lazio and AC Milan, and there were even rumours he'd start this game on the bench.

During the first half, he looked very much like the player we saw (or didn't see) in those two games. He looked sluggish, lacked the confidence to take risks and played one bad pass after another.

Yet when his team needed him the most, he did what all great players do—he delivered.

His goal early in the second half liberated Juventus, and it seemed to have a positive impact on Marchisio as well.

He started taking some risks again, and became more of a presence on the field.

Then he scored again.

By the time the final whistle blew, he looked very much like the Marchisio of old. The one we saw against Pescara, playing with a flair that makes everything look easy.

This just goes to show why you never just bench a player who's struggling with form. Marchisio simply has too much class to not overcome such dips.

Fans must hope his excellent performance in the second half was enough for Marchisio to return to his old ways, as he will play a major part for the Bianconeri in the remainder of this season.

Giaccherini Simply Isn't Good Enough

You might think I'm overreacting, but I've had it with Emanuele Giaccherini. His performance tonight proved what I've long known: the guy isn't good enough to play for Juventus.

I'm pretty sure he led Torino in passing, because the rate at which he turned the ball over was stunning. I've never seen a player get dispossessed so many times in one half of football.

Not a single good cross. Not one. A defensive liability that runs into defenders and whines if the referee doesn't blow the whistle.

How Giaccherini is a part of the national team is beyond me.

He has the occasional moment that makes you think he might be worth it after all, but 95 percent of what he does on the field is detrimental to the team. To top it all off, he doesn't fit the 3-5-2 system that Juventus runs.

I'm sorry, but I'm calling it right here: Giaccherini is a bust.

He's not even a serviceable backup, unlike Paolo De Ceglie who had a solid night in place of Kwadwo Asamoah.

De Ceglie might not be flashy, but he understands his role on the field and does enough to warrant a spot on this roster when he sets foot on the pitch.

Not the case for Giaccherini.

I'm sure some team desperate for a winger will see something in him and gladly take him off Juve's hands during the January transfer window, and the team could use the funds to bring in a new striker.

But please, stop giving this guy chances.

Penalties Remain a Problem

Reports say there was an injury outside of the Juventus Stadium: someone got hit by Andrea Pirlo's penalty.

In all seriousness, Juventus have an issue with spot kicks.

Arturo Vidal is the designated penalty taker for the Bianconeri, but when he's not on the field, Pirlo is the next man up. You'd think someone with his phenomenal set-piece skills would be a logical choice, but then again...

Ask any coach, on any level, and they'll all give you this golden advice:

No matter what you do, always hit the target.

Most teams will give the task of backup-penalty taker to a striker, and maybe that's something Antonio Conte should consider as well.

Giovinco Needs to Start

I love the idea of Sebastian Giovinco as a substitute, where he can use his energy and pace against a defense that is already tired. It would make a lot of sense if there was someone who could start in his place.

The problem is: there isn't.

The partnership of Fabio Quagliarella and Mirko Vucinic doesn't work, and Juve need Giovinco's creativity and mobility in games like this, where the opposing team puts up a double wall and hopes for a draw.

The Atomic Ant plays well alongside Vucinic, who likes to play with his back towards the goal and provide space for other attackers.

He also links up well with Quagliarella, who takes advantage of the space that is created by his running.

Alessandro Matri and Nicklas Bendtner are not an option at the moment, as the coaching staff clearly lacks confidence in both players.

As long as the Bianconeri don't bring in a class striker that works well alongside Vucinic or Quagliarella, Giovinco needs to start.

Finishing Will Have to Be Better If Juve Wish to Beat Shakhtar

Three points are three points, but don't kid yourself: Juventus did not play a good game tonight.

They looked uninspired in the first half, and while Torino never posed much of a threat, the Bianconeri were helped a great deal by Kamil Glik's horrible tackle that saw him get sent off.

On a side note, I'm already looking forward to the Milan fans saying that was not a red card, and the referee helped Juventus once again.

Despite all of this, Juve were still able to muster a number of chances, but failed to capitalise on the bulk of them.

Paul Pogba and Nicklas Bendtner in particular missed chances that should always find the back of the net.

Against a team like Torino, you can afford to miss some chances. Against Shakhtar, not so much.

Juventus only need a point against the current leaders in Group E of the Champions League, but a win would guaranteed first place for the Bianconeri. You can be sure Antonio Conte will be playing for the win and won't tell his troops to take it easy in the knowledge that a draw will suffice.

If Juve want to beat the Ukrainian champions, they can't afford to miss any big chances. At the UCL level, any miss can prove fatal.

Shakhtar nearly beat Juventus when these two sides last met. The Bianconeri will need a far better performance than the one we saw tonight if they wish to return from Donetsk with three points and the top spot in Group E.

Claudio Marchisio believes Juventus will take plenty of confidence from their convincing 3-0 derby victory over Torino on Saturday evening.

The Italy midfielder scored twice while Sebastian Giovinco added a third as the Bianconeri cruised to victory, and the 26-year-old was delighted that two club academy products netted the goals which handed bragging rights to the Scudetto champions.

"It’s important that we got back to winning ways after a bad performance against Milan,” Marchisio was quoted as saying by Football Italia. "It’s good for our confidence to win so convincingly.

"It’s a great sign that Giovinco and I both scored, as we grew up in the Juve youth academy.

"Now we have notched up important points that ensure we stay top of the table, we have to turn our attention to the Champions League."

The win moves Juventus five points clear of Napoli at the top of Serie A, with the second-placed side set to play on Sunday against Pescara.

Angelo Alessio’s final Serie A game on the touchline came to an end with a 3-0 derby victory over Torino on Saturday and he admitted the encounter was a tough one.

The assistant coach, who has stood in for the banned Antonio Conte since the start of the season, cut a nervous figure before a second-half double from Claudio Marchisio and Sebastian Giovinco's strike settled the contest.

“It wasn’t easy to play against such a well organised side,” he told the club's official website.

“We had a few difficulties in the first 20 minutes and the game changed following the sending off, which was an unquestionable decision.

“Thank goodness Giaccherini didn’t have his foot on the ground, otherwise he would have hurt himself."

The Bianconeri tinkered with their usual 3-5-2 system and Alessio was happy to see the changes reap the rewards he had sought.

“The change in formation? We didn’t feel it was worth risking Chiellini and preferred to go with the 4-3-3 used on many occasions last year," he added.

“But our system is 3-5-2 and we’ll use that in Donetsk, where Chiellini will come back into the fold. Antonio will be back on Sunday, I can’t wait for him to return and take his place on the bench.”

The ‘Stile Juventus’ could not have been more evident in the Derby della Mole victory, as the goalscorers were Claudio Marchisio and Sebastian Giovinco – both born, bred and raised in the city. They are a great sign of where Italian football ought to be going, especially in its current economic crisis, and represent only the tip of the iceberg.

Marchisio and Giovinco are in their mid-20s now and needed a particular set of circumstances to become Juventus first team regulars. The midfielder first really broke into the line-up during the season in Serie B at the age of 20, as perhaps he would’ve been loaned out like Giovinco was to gain experience if the squad had not been dealing with such a massive sea-change. That was back in 2006, but now Serie A is changing and we may well have something to thank the financial crisis for.

For 35 minutes it appeared that the real winners of the Turin derby might be Shakhtar Donetsk. The biggest week of Juventus’ season eventually got underway with a sizeable win on Saturday night, but Torino will be left wondering what might have been had Kamil Glik’s red card not conditioned a game the home side started like a team with better things on their minds.

With their trip to Ukraine looming large, Juve needed simply to get the local showdown out of the way with minimal damage on both the energy resources and the league table. But they struggled to put their foot down as the Granata gave as good as they got in the early stages, and the idea that the Bianconeri might achieve neither of their aims for the evening began to creep into the mind with each grimace on Leonardo Bonucci’s face and every yard Andrea Pirlo covered in midfield.

Antonio Conte and Angelo Alessio – along with Massimo Carrera, the latter’s predecessor as matchday coach – have refused to make wholesale changes to their Serie A line-ups preceding Champions League fixtures this season, and that policy continued on Saturday despite the magnitude of Wednesday’s appointment. And until Glik’s costly decision to make a rash two-footed challenge on Emanuele Giaccherini it was looking like the wrong choice.

With Bonucci clearly struggling with the muscle strain he picked up in fouling Stephan El Shaarawy in the defeat to AC Milan six days earlier, Conte may have been better advised to leave the centre-back on the sidelines. So too might he have decided to rest Pirlo, who has yet to turn in convincingly back-to-back in a Champions League week this term. Instead, the coach and his right-hand man saw fit to send out eight men who are likely to be asked to start once more in Donetsk in midweek, while also bringing on a ninth in Kwadwo Asamoah in the second half. Only Giorgio Chiellini and Arturo Vidal of the likely starters were left on the bench throughout, and both of them have spent much of the last seven days racing to prove their fitness.

Conte got away with his gamble thanks in large part to Glik’s 36th-minute red card, with the Bianconeri – playing in a 4-3-3 formation for the first time in over a year following Martin Caceres’ under-par centre-back performance against Milan – being able to afford the luxury of a missed Pirlo penalty before coasting home in the second half. From having looked ready to cause a stir, suddenly Torino were left impotent and Juve were cantering in with energy to spare.

It became only a matter of time before they eventually broke through as they made almost a chance a minute for a period after the interval, and Sebastian Giovinco’s great cross from the right was headed home by Claudio Marchisio, who misses the Donetsk trip due to suspension. With the pressure lifted and Torino’s shoulders sinking to the floor, Giovinco drove home a second and Marchisio grabbed a late third. Had it not been for Jean-Francois Gillet there may have been a couple more to boot.

Juve turn their attentions to the big one knowing that they have yet to record successive victories in the Champions League and their preceding Serie A fixture at any point this term, but the scenario could have been much worse. The Old Lady would have undoubtedly expended more energy up against 11 men than 10 last night, but a bit of good fortune helped them eventually sidestep that particular landmine. Now they need to make the most of it by getting the result they crave so dearly on Wednesday. The next 90 minutes will define Juventus’ season, and misjudgements on and off the field will be more readily punished.

This time, there will be no second chances.

Juventus Outclass Torino in Derby,

Still Comfortable at Top of Serie A Table

What a Derby della Mole it was! It was close early. Back and forth with strong pace. The first real chance came from Torino.

Riccardo Meggiorini had an awful miss in the 23rd minute that will surly haunt him and his teammates for weeks to come.

Paul Pogba had a chance to put Juve ahead when Torino keeper Jean-François Gillet couldn't hold a shot right in front of the net. As Pogba went to play the ball, the officials whistled him for a foul. It was a shocking decision, to say the least.

The pace was strong from both sides, but in truth it was all but a sure thing for the Bianconeri when Torino's Kamil Glik came in on a reckless challenge that resulted in a red card in the 36th minute.

Juventus wasted no time in attempting to take advantage of the shorthanded side. They were awarded a penalty at the 40th minute on a handball in the box. Shockingly, Andrea Pirlo skied the chance over the crossbar.

Somehow, Gillet and his side were able to keep things level into the half.

After the half it was a much different story. Juventus was completely in control, and quite frankly, this one could have easily ended 5-0.

The tie was broken in 57th minute when Claudio Marchisio scored on a beautiful header that Gillet couldn't get a hand on.

Sebastian Giovinco doubled the score 10 minutes later with his fifth of the season in Serie A. If there were any doubt from then on, Marchisio added another one to Juve's scoreline in the 84th.

Marchisio was the man of the match, and his two goals put his total in Serie A at three on the season. Truly a special night for the Torino native.

For Juventus, their strong victory in Saturday's Derby make it impossible for anyone to gain any ground on them in the table this weekend.

Looking ahead, Juventus play their next match against Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk on December 5. Their Serie A match four days later is in Sicily against Palermo.

For Torino things don't get much easier next week, as they host the unstoppable Stephen El Shaarawy and the rest of his recently resurgent Rossoneri. If they don't find a way to get a favorable result soon, they could quickly find themselves hovering in the relegation zone.

Giovinco stresses importance of Juventus win

Juventus striker Sebastian Giovinco stressed the importance of his squad’s victory against Torino in the Turin Derby on Saturday.

Prior to Saturday’s match, the Bianconeri had lost two of their previous four games, prompting questions to be asked of the Italian champions.

“It was definitely a wonderful evening,” he told Sky Sport after the match.

“It was important to win after performing the way we did against AC Milan.

“It was the perfect response, and a good sign.

“The confidence from the fans? I’m very happy with the ovation, I can’t complain.”

The 25-year-old was asked about his role up front on the outside after Juventus changed their shape, and employed a 4-3-3 formation.

“I am an attacker, and I put myself at the disposal of the manager. I do what he asks of me, because he knows how to employ me.”

The former Juventus youth squad member scored the second goal of the match, and his fifth in Serie A this season to help the Bianconeri to a 3-0 win at Juventus Stadium.
