AC Milan ground out a priceless 1-0 victory over Serie A leaders Juventus at San Siro on Sunday evening to blow the title race wide open.

The Bianconeri suffered only their second defeat in the league this season, after failing to respond to a Robinho penalty after 31 minutes in what was a closely contested match from both sides, which nevertheless lacked a lot of action in front of goal.

Juventus maintain their four-point lead at the top of the table, but could see that gap cut to a single point should Inter come away with victory at Parma on Monday, while Milan move to eighth place with 18 points, jumping five spots in the standings.

Robinho won the race to start up front for the hosts ahead of Bojan, while Juve made only one change from the side that dismantled Chelsea 3-0 in the Champions League midweek, with Mauricio Isla replacing Stephan Lichtsteiner as the right wing-back.

Milan full-back Mattia De Sciglio was in the thick of things early on, dragging a shot from the edge of the area wide after five minutes, before forcing Gianluigi Buffon to work to stop his attempt from an angle with his legs, after he was played in by Robinho.

The better openings in the match were continually going Milan's way, and they found some fortune just after the half hour mark when a soft penalty appeal for handball against Isla went their way, after the Bianconeri player struggled to clear under pressure from Nocerino.

Robinho took responsibilities from the spot, and his shot squeezed into the bottom left corner, despite Buffon getting a strong hand to the attempt.

Juve were simply not good enough in the first half, as despite controlling the majority of possession, looked decidedly out of ideas in attack.

Minutes into the second half, a terrible pass out of defence from Buffon nearly sold Andrea Barzagli short and allowed Stephan El Shaarawy to pounce, but the defender was able to slide in for a crucial tackle.

The introduction of Sebastian Giovinco for Fabio Quagliarella around the hour-mark finally sparked Juve into life. The diminutive Italian set up a great opportunity for Mirko Vucinic not long after his introduction, but the Montenegrin could not convert his cross from a good position inside the area.

At the other end, Mario Yepes forced a save from Buffon with a header from a corner, but Milan were soon forced back into some desperate defending as Juve made a late surge to get something from the match in the closing stages.

With seven minutes remaining, Giovinco again picked out Vucinic inside the area, but Amelia was in the right place to make a superb save to deny the striker from close range.

But Juve could not change their stripes that late in the game, and failed to find another breakthrough as Milan held on to record three vital points to help the recovery of their season.

Milan doomed Juventus to their second defeat of the season,

but earned it with an extremely controversial Robinho penalty.

The Bianconeri dominated possession at San Siro, though struggled to create clear-cut chances in their first away loss in 18 months.

This was a Scudetto showdown nine months ago, ending 1-1 with Sulley Muntari’s ‘phantom goal’ not seen by officials. Going into this game, the Rossoneri were in 13th place and 17 points adrift of leaders Juventus.

They were also without Massimo Ambrosini, Daniele Bonera, Alexandre Pato, Luca Antonini, Muntari and Djamel Mesbah, so Robinho returned to the trident. Giorgio Chiellini didn’t make the trip due to a calf strain and was replaced by Martin Caceres, but Leonardo Bonucci recovered from a stomach bug and Andrea Pirlo’s ban expired. Mauricio Isla was preferred to Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Christian Abbiati pulled out in the warm-up with back pain, so Marco Amelia was a last-minute replacement and the captain’s armband given to Riccardo Montolivo. President Silvio Berlusconi and former Milan legend Marco Van Basten were in the stands.

Mattia De Sciglio’s angled drive whistled just wide, then Gigi Buffon used his feet to parry Kevin-Prince Boateng’s strike at the near post from a Robinho assist.

A deflected Fabio Quagliarella effort was easily held by Amelia and the crowd were irritated when Robinho went down under a Pirlo challenge and the referee waved play on. El Shaarawy’s finish on the counter was weak and into Buffon’s arms.

The referee pointed to the spot on the half-hour when Isla stuck out an arm when blocking Antonio Nocerino’s header, though replays suggest the ball actually hit him on the ribs. Robinho stepped up and Buffon did get his hand to it, but the power took it through anyway at the near bottom corner for the Brazilian’s first goal of the season.

Another Boateng counter was wasted when his shot was deflected meekly into Buffon’s grasp, but Juve struggled to muster much of a reaction. Bonucci was booked for tripping El Shaarawy on a rapid counter just before the break, but Montolivo’s free kick went through the wall and into Buffon’s hands.

Simone Padoin was the surprising replacement for a disappointing Isla, leaving Lichtsteiner on the bench. Sebastian Giovinco then came on for Quagliarella after a Pirlo free kick was deflected out off the wall, but the Neapolitan was evidently not happy and muttered something to Angelo Alessio while covering his mouth with his jacket.

On 61 minutes Amelia punched away a cross and Pirlo put it back in for Mirko Vucinic’s deflected shot. Giovinco went for an audacious overhead kick from 12 yards on Padoin’s cross, but shinned it off target.

Juve were pouring forward now with Milan concentrating on the counter, where Montolivo had a shot charged down in the box and Nocerino blasted over the bar.

Philippe Mexes went off with a recurrence of his ankle injury and Paul Pogba was Juve’s final substitution. El Shaarawy’s roll across for Giampaolo Pazzini was put out for a corner by Bonucci.

The home fans unveiled a banner for Pato that read: ‘Anyone with Milan in their heart does not call their agent.’ It was a reference to his comment that he wanted to play more regularly and would talk with his representatives.

Mario Yepes got his head to a corner, but Buffon had it under control. Moments later Giovinco pounced on a defensive error and pulled back for Vucinic, whose shot was cleared off the line by Kevin Constant from seven yards.

Vucinic tried with an angled drive from distance that bounced in front of Amelia and the goalkeeper palmed it round the post. A clearance to the edge of the box saw Marchisio’s effort deflected out for a corner, as Juventus continued to push without creating many clear-cut chances.

Giovinco was offside on 89 minutes, much to Amelia’s relief as the goalkeeper then chopped him down.

Milan give Allegri breathing space

AC Milan picked up an important victory and did their city rivals Inter a favour by beating Juventus 1-0 at the San Siro.

A Robinho penalty in the 31st minute decided the game in the Rossoneri's favour as Juve were beaten for only the second time this season.

Juve could have gone seven points clear with a win, but remain just four ahead of Fiorentina in second and Inter in third.

In the battle of Italy's two Champions League participants, the team which has already booked their place in the last 16 defeated the one who must yet follow suit with at least a draw in their last group game.

Milan appeared hungrier than Juve to begin with, or at least fresher than their opponents.

Both had 90 minutes of Champions League football during the week, yet while Milan were in a more comfortable situation for their game against Anderlecht, Juve were under immense pressure to beat Chelsea.

That seemed to take their edge away and they were unable to create even a single opening in the first 45 minutes.

Milan created only a few more, but tellingly got the ball into the penalty area more often and received their reward when a penalty was given for handball against Mauricio Isla.

Robinho took responsibility from the spot and, although Gianluigi Buffon got both hands to the ball, he was unable to keep it out.

Buffon almost gifted Stephan El Shaarawy a second early in the second half, but Andrea Barzagli spared his goalkeeper's blushes with a brave sliding tackle to send the loose ball away from the Italy international.

Juve's reaction arrived when Sebastian Giovinco came on to replace Fabio Quagliarella.

His first action was a spectacular overhead kick attempt from eight yards, but he did not make contact like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Philippe Mexes in recent weeks with the ball flying wide.

Milan were far more defensive in the second half, yet they had a good chance to double their lead when Mario Yepes' header from a corner was saved by Buffon.

In the 83rd minute Giovinco set up Mirko Vucinic, who tried to place his shot rather than choosing power, and while he beat goalkeeper Marco Amelia he did not find a way past Kevin Constant just in front of the goal-line.

Juve pushed and pushed for an equaliser but as the rain grew in intensity, their hopes became damper and damper as the hosts held on.

Marco Amelia - Rarely given anything to think about by the Juve attack as he spent the majority of his time as a spectator, but kept his concentration to make two key saves late in the game.

Mattia De Sciglio - Very ambitious early on as he forced two shots during the opening exchanges, one of which tested Buffon in the Juve goal. Settled down shortly after into his defensive duties admirably, but still had an eye for getting forward and supporting the attack.

Philippe Mexes - Solid and unflappable at the back, as he was more than a match for whatever Juve could throw his way. Especially notable in the latter stages when he made a series of last-ditch defensive plays.

Mario Alberto Yepes - Stepped out of defence to make some timely interceptions, and take full advantage of Juve's lack of cohesion in the attacking third. Rarely made any mistakes throughout in what was a very dependable performance.

Antonio Nocerino - Decent enough in the middle of the park, proving a willing runner, despite his eagerness getting the better of him when giving away some cheap fouls. Did well to force Isla into conceding a penalty with a determined run into the area from a deep position.

Kevin-Prince Boateng - Not decisive enough in attack on a few Milan possessions, and eventually settled into a less ambitious role, allowing the likes of Robinho and El Shaarawy to do the running at the defence.

Riccardo Montolivo - Very intelligent in possession, as he always seemed to pick out the most effectively placed player when Milan looked to attack. Held his position well in the middle of the park, and made a few good tackles. Outdid Pirlo at his own game on the night.

Kevin Constant - Put in a good shift defensively on the left flank, where he did not allow many Juventus attacks to get past him. Preferred to sit deep and lock down his side, rather than venture forward and risk surrendering his defensive position.

Nigel De Jong - Protected the defence effectively, as he was relentless in patrolling the space in front of his own penalty area. Often slowed down Juve when they attacked through the centre, and such was his success at forcing congestion in the middle, that the visitors were often forced to lesser options out wide.

Robinho - His movement and willingness to work the channels of space afforded to him by Juventus' three-man back-line was a key factor in the way Milan approached their offensive operations. A consistent threat, and did just enough to convert a first-half penalty to give his side the lead.

Stephan El Shaarawy - A danger whenever he broke with the ball, and even as Milan settled into a defensive set up during the second half, he still harboured a threat on the counter with his pace.

Substitutions

Cristian Zapata - An extra body in defence; made one or two interceptions.

Mathieu Flamini - Solidified the midfield in the closing stages.

Giampaolo Pazzini - Not much for him to feed off in attack, as defence was firmly on the agenda by the time he took the field.

JUVENTUS

Gianluigi Buffon - Probably disappointed in himself that he let Robinho's penalty in as he did get a strong hand to the attempt. One horrible pass in the second half nearly cost his team dearly, but for the alertness of Andrea Barzagli.

Martín Cáceres - Given a few problems by the movement of Robinho, and struggled to contain the Brazilian when he attacked. Too often appeared isolated on the left side of defence, and could have done with more cover.

Andrea Barzagli - Gave away a careless foul at the edge of his area on El Shaarawy, but otherwise kept his concentration well to make some good defensive plays, particularly a superb sliding challenge to extinguish a potentially suicidal pass out from Buffon.

Leonardo Bonucci - Did what was required of him with little fuss, and though he seemed stretched on a few counterattacks, he did not do a whole lot wrong. Picked up a yellow card for a careless foul.

Mauricio Isla - Tasked with providing his side some width on the right flank, but far too often, his final ball into the area was lacking the desired quality. A bit unlucky to concede a somewhat soft penalty for a handball, but he was careless to leave his arm up during the play. Taken off at half time.

Claudio Marchisio - Frustrating game for the normally energetic midfielder, who failed to get much change from the determined ranks of Milan. As frustrated as the rest of his team.

Andrea Pirlo - With the players in front of him well marshalled by the Milan midfield and defence, Pirlo's influence was rather limited as his passing could not have the desired effect.

Kwadwo Asamoah - Huffed and puffed out on the left, but often found himself isolated as Juve seemed unsure of their route forward in attack. One or two good cross-field balls was about the best he could offer in the first half, and he was taken off in the second after struggling to better De Sciglio.

Arturo Vidal - Far more effective in the second half than in the first, as he found a lot of joy slipping into unmanned positions on the right flank, and giving the Juve attack an extra dimension of width.

Mirko Vučinić - Rather forgettable in the first half as he was decidedly out of sync when on the ball. A little more effective after the break when allowed to run at the defence, but still could not conjure up many meaningful moments.

Fabio Quagliarella - Snatched at the pair of half-chances that fell his way in the first half, and failed to really trouble Abbiati. Though his link up play was decent, too often, it led to nothing of note for the Bianconeri.

Substitutions

Simone Padoin - Offered far more than Isla on the right flank, and threatened the Milan defence with a few good deliveries into the area. A positive substitution for the visitors.

Sebastian Giovinco - Sparked a Juve improvement shortly after his introduction with a few good set-ups in attack, but could not sustain it and faded.

Juventus coach Angelo Alessio has slammed the decision to award AC Milan a decisive penalty during Sunday's clash at San Siro, and suggested the Turin outfit would have suffered severe criticism had the roles been reversed.

The Rossoneri battled to a 1-0 win thanks to Robinho's spot kick, after Mauricio Isla was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area, although replays clearly showed the ball struck his midriff.

Alessio admitted the decision was an unfortunate incident to befall his side, but accepted that the Scudetto champions did not reach their top level as they suffered their first away defeat in 18 months.

He told reporters after the match: "The way we set up gets the best out of all the players, but if we don’t display the right intensity and usual competitive edge then it becomes difficult.

He continued: "We’ve been involved in the game for a long time and are perfectly aware that there are incidents that go both for and against you in every game.

"I don’t know what would have happened if we had won here with a penalty like that. In any case we’ll keep soldiering on, knowing that we must play in a different way to win."

AC Milan boss Massmiliano Allegri has admitted his side were fortunate to be awarded a decisive penalty during their 1-0 win over Juventus on Sunday evening.

Robinho scored the only goal of the game from the spot after Mauricio Isla was adjudged to have handled inside the area, although replays showed the ball clearly struck his ribs.

Allegri conceded the penalty award was an incorrect call from the officials, but was quick to praise his side for their committed and organised display as they consigned the Bianconeri to their first away defeat in 18 months.

"From the touchline it really did seem like a spot kick, but watching the replays it should not have been given," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"This game was a real battle by the players. We only allowed Juventus one shot on target, while there were four or five great scoring opportunities for us.

"I think the team did its absolute best against a Juve side that is doing great things. It’s wonderful that we managed to avoid basically giving Juventus any chances at all.

"We defended in a very organised manner and the lads deserve so much credit for this. We worked well as a unit, which is a positive sign.

"Stephan El Shaarawy didn’t score, but he has great qualities and really takes it up a notch when playing wide."

The victory was a highlight in what has been a difficult week for Allegri, after Silvio Berlusconi revealed he was seeking to bring in Pep Guardiola as the 45-year-old's replacement in the near future.

Allegri, however, shrugged off the speculation in somewhat nonchalant style, claiming he was "flattered" to hear that a coach of Guardiola's calibre had been identified to succeed him.

"I feel flattered that the club is looking for Guardiola as my replacement, seeing as he is one of the best coaches in the world," he said.

Assistant Coach Angelo Alessio felt Juventus lost to Milan because “we did not play as a team unit,” but wondered what would’ve happened if they had received that penalty instead.

“When we do not play as a team unit, then we suffer and lose in this way,” he said of the 1-0 defeat at San Siro.

“There was some fatigue after the Chelsea match, even if in certain games the energy and motivation come by themselves.”

The game was decided by an extremely dubious Robinho penalty, as replays show the ball struck Mauricio Isla on the ribs rather than the arm.

“I daren’t imagine what would’ve happened if we had won with a penalty like that, but incidents can happen.”

Alessio denied a row with Fabio Quagliarella, who covered his mouth when muttering something as he was substituted.

“I don’t think Quagliarella seemed angry when he came off. In any case, I’d rather not talk about individuals because tonight we lost as a team. We accept the defeat and move on.”

Juve have lost only two of their last 53 Serie A games and both were against Milanese clubs, as Inter won in Turin last month.

Marotta: 'Juve's worst performance'

Director general Beppe Marotta concedes “Juventus played one of their worst games of the season and the penalty cannot be an alibi.”

The Bianconeri were beaten 1-0 by Milan thanks to a Robinho spot-kick incorrectly awarded for a Mauricio Isla handling offence.

Despite dominating possession at San Siro, Juve barely troubled goalkeeper Marco Amelia.

“I think it would’ve ended 0-0 without that penalty. Juve played one of their worst games of the season and the penalty cannot be an alibi,” noted Marotta.

“Juventus must be accustomed to challenging on different fronts, so playing four days after the win over Chelsea was enough to recuperate.

“I repeat, it was one of the worst performances. We must work hard to get back on our feet and improve.

“We haven’t scored for two Serie A games in a row because our opponents put us under pressure with their systems and we have been unable to break down their defences.”

Buffon: 'Juve deserved to lose'

Gigi Buffon looked at the overall performance and felt Juventus “deserved to lose this time” at San Siro.

The 1-0 defeat to Milan was secured with a controversial Robinho penalty, which the goalkeeper got a hand to.

“I saved it so well that it went in,” shrugged the Bianconeri captain. “In my view it wasn’t a penalty, but incidents like that can happen.

“The fact remains that we had time to get the game back on track and didn’t do it. We had an hour to muster some kind of response.”

It was Juve’s first Serie A away defeat in 18 months, since the 1-0 in Parma on May 15 2011.

“So much has happened in the last year and a half. If we want to find an excuse for this defeat, then we can, but the truth is that we deserved to lose this time.

“Being self-critical is the best way to educate people. You can never know what the real reasons are behind a defeat, but something was missing tonight in many aspects and it was visible.

“In the locker room we will now have to evaluate and analyse what went wrong.”

Giuseppe Marotta has refused to look for excuses in the wake of Juventus' 1-0 Serie A loss to AC Milan at San Siro on Sunday evening.

The Bianconeri conceded a dubious penalty on the half-hour mark which effectively cost them the game, but Marotta has insisted their defeat was not down to the referee because of tiredness following their Champions League win over Chelsea.

"Without the penalty it would have been a scoreless draw. These things even themselves out over the course of the season, though," Marotta was quoted as saying on the official Juventus website.

"Aside from that, it wasn’t the usual Juventus performance and therefore we won’t make any excuses.

"We need to get used to competing in a greater number of competitions so tiredness shouldn’t be an excuse. We had four days to recover. The fact remains that we didn’t approach the game in our usual manner."

Gianluigi Buffon feels that referee Nicola Rizzoli was wrong to award AC Milan a penalty in Sunday's Serie A encounter, but stressed that the spot-kick was not the reason for Juventus' 1-0 defeat.

Rizzoli pointed to the spot on the half-hour mark after Mauricio Isla allegedly handballed inside his own area under pressure from Antonio Nocerino, but Buffon believes the Rossoneri were simply the better side and were deserving of their victory.

"The replay is clear, it wasn’t a penalty, but that wasn’t the reason behind our defeat," the goalkeeper was quoted as saying on the club's official website.

"We had an hour to get back into it and weren’t able to do so. There are many incidents like that over the course of a season.

"If people want to find excuses for a defeat, it’s simple, but I believe the best way of explaining it would be to say that the opposition were better than us and we deserved to lose.

"Having said that, you have to ask why we lost. It’s not easy to work out. We were missing something and that was evident. We had time to get back on level terms but we didn’t ever create the right opportunity."

It wasn’t the real Juve, says Bonucci

Leonardo Bonucci has looked to explain the reasons for Juventus’ anonymous performance in the 1-0 loss at Milan.

Although the Rossoneri won thanks to an inexistent penalty, the stopper has admitted that the Italian champions were poor.

“We paid for our midweek performance in the Champions League and didn’t take to the field with our usual concentration,” the 25-year-old noted after the 3-0 over Chelsea.

“We had an incident go against us, which we paid a high price for, but we saw nothing of the real Juventus this evening.

“Milan defended deep and, on a personal level, I made a few too many mistakes. Those errors can happen, but what is important is that we work out what was going through our heads in the first half…”

Despite picking up just four points from their last four games, the Old Lady will remain top of the League – even if Napoli and Inter win this evening.

Zoff cools Juventus anxiety

Juventus shouldn’t be overly concerned with the 1-0 defeat at Milan on Sunday, says former player and Coach Dino Zoff.

After going 49 games unbeaten, the Old Lady suffered their second defeat in four League games by falling at San Siro.

“They shouldn't worry. Juventus have one problem, namely that they don’t put the ball in the back of the net,” the ex-goalkeeper told Sportal.

“They create so much, they press really well, but, in the end, they don’t ripple the net. That is their limit right now.”

The Rossoneri won the game with a debatable penalty and Zoff admits that he wasn’t too impressed with what he saw at the Meazza.

“I’ve heard people say it was a spectacular game, but my idea of a spectacle is a little different,” Zoff lamented.

“Gigi Buffon made two saves and Marco Amelia was never worked.

“Milan played the game of their lives, but Juventus, after having a few problems in the first half, were basically playing in the Milan half after the break. They just didn’t create any real chances.”

Seedorf: Juve team to beat

Milan legend Clarence Seedorf thinks Juventus could dominate Italian football for at least the next five years.

The Turin giants won the Scudetto last season and he expects them to continually battle for the championship.

“Juventus will be the team to beat for the next five or six years,” the Botafogo midfielder told Sky Sport Italia.

“The important thing for them was the construction of the new stadium. That instantly put them to the front in Italy.”

Despite a strong start to the season, Juventus have collected just four points from their last four games and the top four in Serie A are now covered by just four points.

“Inter have surprised me,” added the veteran Dutchman. “They changed a lot, but they’ve made some right decisions and had a bit of luck too.”
