Torino vs. Juventus Preview:
Round 6 — Hello to an old friend

Wait, somebody not from Verona? I don't get it.

Sep 28, 2013

There are a lot of things to be thankful for that the city of Turin has produced. There's Juventus, of course, and everything that comes along with it. There's an intense derby to look forward to twice every season. There's the fact that one of Juve's best players, Claudio Marchisio, was born and grew up just minutes away from where he now makes a living.

http://markting10.nl/

Sunday is one of those days where everything comes together into one. The Derby della Molle is a unique day for the city of Turin, one that sees Juventus face Torino.

But for a couple years as Torino hung out in Serie B, we didn't have the Turin derby to watch twice a season. Luckily for us, it returned with a bang on the first day of December last year. In case you forgot what happened, watch this here video for a quick reminder.

http://youtu.be/OQERpHt9kPo

(No, really. That's really Nicklas Bendtner playing in a game for Juventus.)

And if you forgot about what happened in the second Turin derby last season, here's Claudio Zuliani to remind you of all the fun in the rain Juventus had as they moved that much closer to a second straight title.

Good times, good times.

Basically what I'm trying to say with all of this is that the Derby della Molle is back for another season. It's Juventus vs. Torino at the Stadio Olimpico. There may or may not be rain in the forecast, but there will certainly be a lunchtime kickoff for the first time in quite a little while. And I could go on and on about how the derby is different from other games, but I'll just snag a quote from Antonio Conte's pre-match press conference on Saturday that sums things up nicely:

"We've got great respect for Torino because they're a fine, well-organized side with fine players and an excellent coach. We know that derbies are always particular types of games in which the form guide goes out of the window."

Bingo. On with the show.

GOOD NEWS

If last season's two Turin derbies were a sign of what's to come, we should be expecting a goal from Claudio Marchisio tomorrow. Maybe it's the Turin thing, maybe it's just because he's awesome. Maybe it's both. But if Il Principino wants to continue this trend of scoring goals against the team his wife happens to root for, you won't find me objecting to it.

BAD NEWS

Have you seen Juventus' finishing lately? Sure, the possession has been comfortably in their favor. But the finishing, yeah, it hasn't exactly been what some would call "clinical."

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

1. How will a rested Carlos Tevez do?

In the past we've discussed how a rested Andrea Pirlo is just that much better than the usual product. Now, after coming off the bench in the second half against Chievo on Wednesday, Carlos Tevez gets to show us just how much not playing 90 minutes could help him. His form this season has been fantastic — making an impact right from the word go and easily establishing himself in the Juventus squad. The goals are of course what will grab the headlines, but just about everything Carlitos has done so far has been impressive as hell.

And what better way to keep the very good form going than in the Turin derby, something Tevez has been educated on by a certain Turin native in recent weeks.

2. Who will start alongside Tevez?

We've seen Fernando Llorente brought into the mix now that Conte has deemed him fit to play on a regular basis. As a result, Mirko Vucinic's time on the field ever since the international break ended has been cut. The knee injury he suffered while on international duty with Montenegro is likely a big factor in that. Conte was very coy during the presser on Saturday when it comes to Vucinic's status for the derby. That could just be Conte being Conte and Vucinic is good to go, but we'll just have to wait and see on that.

3. Containing Alessio Cerci.

If you had Alessio Cerci being joint-top scorer in Serie A through the first five games of the season, then you should probably drop what you're doing right now, move to Las Vegas, and visit a couple of casinos. Or just go to one if your luck is clicking and the bets are paying out. But back to Cerci. He's just three goals behind the figure (8) he had all of last season, and is certainly one of the most in-form players in Serie A at the moment. He's looking right at home as a striker in Torino's 3-5-2 formation and his pace will certainly a point of emphasis for Juve's back three to contain.

4. How Paul Pogba plays in place of Andrea Pirlo.

Word on the street — or amongst those on the internet — is that the maestro will be rested with an eye on the Champions League tie against Galatasaray. My response: GOOD. Pirlo's form has been discussed in many a thread in recent weeks and keeping him fresh with so many games going on right now. That means Pogba, who has been filling in for Marchisio for almost the entire early part of the season, will slot back into a some see him filling on a regular basis in the not-so-distant future. Judging by the way the 20-year-old Frenchman has played this season, there's no reason to think he won't have some kind of impact on the result.

5. The Antonio Conte vs. Giampiero Ventura dynamic.

There has been a lot of talk about the two managers leading up to the derby. It makes sense, considering their past. One IVentura) took over for the other (Conte) at Bari and almost always of the same mind when it comes to tactics. It's something Mina Rzouki pointed out in her Friday column:

Both tacticians have achieved success with the 4-2-4 shape, both have tinkered with different formations and tactics and both have now settled for a 3-5-2 module.

Ventura, ever the revolutionary tactician, has decided to deploy a different shape on the pitch this season. Whilst he opted for a 4-2-4 formation for much of last year, towards the end of the season, we saw Ventura tinker quite a bit.

When Juventus and Torino take the field tomorrow afternoon at the Olimpico, Ventura will almost certainly throw out tactics that will emulate those of his counterpart on the Juventus sideline. And since Conte knows Ventura's tactics just about as well as anybody — and vice versa — the battle on the field will be just as interesting as the one going on between the two men roaming the sidelines and barking out orders to their players.

My starting XI (3-5-2): Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Vidal, Pogba, Marchisio, Asamoah; Llorente, Tevez

OFFICIAL KICKOFF TIME: 12:30 P.M. IN ITALY; 6:30 A.M. ON THE EAST COAST; 3:30 A.M. ON THE WEST COAST

Torino v Juventus –
Team News, Tactics, Lineups And Prediction

Sep 28, 2013

The City of Turin will be divided come Derby Day. Torino welcome their city rivals Juventus on Sunday for the Derby Della Mole. You don’t have to dig too deep to find Juventus’ last victory against Il Toro. The Serie A Champions did the double on their neighbours last season with an aggregate score-line of 5-0. Torino, on the other hand, have struggled to get the better of Juventus and you’d have to go back 18 years to meet their last victory against the Bianconeri.

http://markting10.nl/

Juventus have started the season in just the fashion that was expected of them. Unbeaten, and two points off leaders, Roma, they sit in 4th place on league standings. As for Torino, they’ve started their season on a positive note as well. Two draws, two wins and a solitary loss against Atalanta is the only blemish on an otherwise solid beginning. The Granata occupy 8th place in the league charts.

Team News and Tactical Brief

TORINO

Manager Giampiero Ventura has been in many ways a mentor to his opposite number. Antonio Conte modeled his 4-2-4 formation on Ventura’s philosophy. Ventura, ironically enough, has now shifted tactics to a 3-5-2 system, one that emulates, none other than Conte’s. It’s this change in formation that has perhaps catalyzed their great start. It certainly will receive credit for two of the most flourishing players in the system: Alessio Cerci and Danilo D’Ambrosio.

Cerci who has been an inconsistent talent for most of his career, is firmly laying a claim for a spot in Cesare Prandelli’s Italy squad for the World Cup. Cerci has been shifted into the centre as a floater in behind the team’s prima punta. That freedom to invent and navigate has brought out the best in him. With 5 goals, he’s the surprising leader of the goal-scoring table. The other revelation has been Danilo D’Ambrosio. The wing-back has seen his potential exploited in his new role that has perhaps relieved a bit of his defensive duties. They are the threats Conte will highlight for his side to be wary of.

Torino could take encouragement from the teams that have set out to hold fort against Juventus. Set-pieces will obviously be something Ventura will instruct his team to target as a means to obtain a goal but you’d expect them to sit back and hit the Bianconeri on the break. Cerci’s excellent form bodes well for Torino and he will be at the heart of all things good that the Granata have to offer.

Only Marcelo Larrondo is injured for Ventura’s men.

Possible Starting XI (3-5-2): Padelli; Darmian, Bovo, Moretti; D’Ambrosio, Basha, Vives, El Kaddouri, Pasquale; Cerci, Immobile

JUVENTUS

Recent games have seen Juventus do just enough to get over the finishing line. Against Chievo, they did have lady luck on their side with a goal wrongly disallowed for the Flying Donkeys coupled with an own goal that gave them the three points. With the rotation policy employed by Conte, he’d be content with the victories coming by. On the flip-side though, their propensity to concede first is not something Conte will be pleased with. Their character and famous fighting spirit comes to the fore here but they’ll be wishing they didn’t make things hard for themselves to begin with.

The rotation is set to continue with Conte expected to reintroduce Tevez, Vidal, Vucinic, Lichtsteiner, Asamoah and Bonucci to the playing eleven. Juventus may have an eye on the crucial Champions League game in midweek against Galatasaray and with that in mind, a few players might be rested. Andrea Pirlo is one such player.

The former Milan man has attracted criticism for his slack start to the season and as such could be ‘benched’ or ‘rested’, as you please. What that does is allow us to get a look at the highly intense midfield trio of Vidal-Pogba-Marchisio; three players with high energy levels that make for a pulsating prospect.

Pepe, Rubinho and Caceres are not included in the travelling Juventus squad.

Possible Starting XI (3-5-2): Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Vidal, Pogba, Marchisio, Asamoah; Tevez, Vucinic

Player To Watch Out For

Claudio Marchisio (Juventus)

No player knows the true meaning of a local derby more than, well, a player that was born and brought up in the City. Claudio Marchisio is one such player. The Prince of Turin has come through the ranks at Juventus and is a symbol of the club. He’s someone who is fully aware of the magnitude of the derby and one that often rises to the occasion. Marchisio has yet to make an impact this season but what better way than against rivals, Torino.

Prediction

Torino 1-2 Juventus

Juventus will begin the game as favorites as their sheer quality tips the scale in their favor. Conte rightly noted that form goes out the window in derbies. The element of passion comes into play. History, of course, certainly points towards Juventus and you’d expect the Bianconeri to emerge from this game with a hard fought slender win.

Two tactical maestros, one city, one formation

Sep 28, 2013

Recent history has hardly been kind to Torino. Having not won against their Turin rivals since 1995, they are desperate to make an impression this season and in Giampiero Ventura, they certainly have a tactician capable of springing a surprise. He is, after all, the man who inspired Antonio Conte.

http://markting10.nl/

Both tacticians have achieved success with the 4-2-4 shape, both have tinkered with different formations and tactics and both have now settled for a 3-5-2 module.

Ventura, ever the revolutionary tactician, has decided to deploy a different shape on the pitch this season. Whilst he opted for a 4-2-4 formation for much of last year, towards the end of the season, we saw Ventura tinker quite a bit.

In the match against Juventus in April, we witnessed him mirroring Conte's formation, playing a 3-5-1-1 shape whilst the next match against Milan saw Torino switch to a 5-3-2 formation. It was that 5-3-2 formation deployed against the Rossoneri that was used again and again, until the end of the season, occasionally changing it to a 3-5-2 depending on the opposition's style of play.

Over the summer, Ventura's decision to toy with this new shape caused commotion in the peninsula, as it seemed the tactician was far too fond of a four-man back-line to ever buy into the latest Serie A fad. However, the coach argued that the change in form was simply pragmatic considering the qualities of the squad he now boasts. Not only, his admirers wrote, did it give the side greater mobility in attack but it has also solidified the defence. As such, it was a sensible decision and Torino have played a 3-5-2 formation in all their Serie A games this season.

The wing-backs now sit higher up the pitch and are encouraged to attack as long as they pay attention to their defensive duties. Danilo D'Ambrosio has especially benefited from the opportunity to contribute more towards the attacking passages of play and has already scored two goals this season. So impressive are his performances that there's been talk that he may well form part of Cesare Prandelli's Azzurri in the future -- that is if he continues to impress on the field.

Interestingly, although D'Ambrosio tends to adopt a deeper position on the field than one expects (sitting just behind the halfway line), he has proved more incisive when attacking than Matteo Darmian who sits on the right flank and adopts a much higher position. Whilst Darmian may not be as adept at scoring goals, he certainly knows how to push forward, with most of Toro's attacking passages of play coming from that right flank.

Up front, the Granata boast an unlikely partnership in Ciro Immobile and Alessio Cerci. There were fears the duo wouldn't work well together and there were certainly signals that justified these fears early on. However, against Milan, the two showed a growing understanding with Immobile delivering the assist, a perfect through ball, for Cerci to convert. The latter has now scored five goals in five games, gaining consistency and proving to be Torino's most feared player.

Fast breaks are what we can expect from Ventura's side. They are adept at absorbing pressure before pushing with pace, having already scored two from counter-attacking situations. They are dangerous from set-pieces and clinical with their finish.

Defensively, they are surprisingly not the biggest tackling side, in fact they perform fewer tackles than any other Serie A side yet they rarely concede shots. That's not to say they cannot be overcome but considering Juve's history of squandering goal scoring opportunities, it will be another tough test.

Andrea Pirlo is likely to be rested for the derby so that he will be fit for the home game against Galatasaray midweek, whilst it seems Claudio Marchisio, Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal will start. In defence, ex-Torino defender Angelo Ogbonna will have to watch the action from the bench as Conte prepares to reinstall Juve's most effective trio at the back.

Up front, questions remain. Carlos Tevez is predicted to start but it seems no journalist agrees on who will partner him. Sebastian Giovinco may prove useful in a derby whilst Fabio Quagliarella seems to be in great form. Fernando Llorente proved impressive against Verona and motivated against Chievo so may offered another start but Mirko Vucinic is ready to come back. So who will it be?

A fascinating match between two tactical maestros, the Derby della Mole is always a special game but with these two coaches in charge, one hopes it will be delectable.

Serie A Preview: Torino v Juventus

Juventus will hope to maintain their 18-year dominance over local
rivals Torino when the sides meet in Serie A on Sunday.

Sep 28, 2013

The last time Juve suffered defeat in the clash was in 1995, and they have since won 10 of the 14 subsequent meetings.

http://markting10.nl/

Antonio Conte's side sit in fourth place, having dropped points just once this season, while city rivals Torino find themselves in eighth having lost only once.

Juventus were given a stiff test last time out however, as they were forced to come from behind at Chievo on Wednesday thanks to a second-half effort from Fabio Quagliarella and an Alessandro Bernardini own goal.

However, the hosts were left aggrieved after seeing a goal wrongly chalked off due to an incorrect offside call and Conte believes his side were lucky to get away with the three points.

"Chievo's sense of fair play is impressive and everyone should follow their example. We were lucky today, because the situation went our way," he said.

"Up until that moment the match was in our hands with Gigi Buffon acting as a spectator. We did well to press the reset button at half-time and turn it around after the break."

After a disappointing season last time out, in which they finished 16th, Torino have made an impressive start to their campaign, going into the derby unbeaten in three matches.

Giampiero Ventura's men also have an in-form Alessio Cerci in their ranks, with the former Fiorentina forward scoring four times in his last three games to sit joint top of the scorers' standings.

Ventura wants his side to continue their impressive start to the season when the champions come to town, adding that he feels the league is a tougher proposition this year than last.

"We have many new players at this club and we have also changed our formation but we are a team that always tries to play purposeful football," Ventura said.

"We want to grow and continue pushing on because we are playing in a league that is more difficult than last year.”

Torino have not beaten Juventus in their last 14 games, last securing local bragging rights in 1995 thanks to a 2-1 win.

Torino have also failed to score against Juventus in their last eight meetings - last finding the net in the derby in February 2002.

Juventus remain without long-term absentees Simone Pepe (thigh and Martin Caceres (knee), while a broken foot keeps Torino's only injury concern, Marcelo Larrondo, out of the game.

Lapo Elkann: Tevez will decide derby

The 35-year-old entrepreneur backed 'the Bull' to shine at the Stadio Olimpico,
whilst hitting out at racism which has become synonymous with Serie A.

Sep 29, 2013

Lapo Elkann claims that Juventus striker Carlos Tevez will be determining factor in Sunday's Turin Derby.

http://markting10.nl/

The 35-year-old entrepreneur is just one of a number of Bianconeri followers to have been impressed not only by the Argentine's goals, but also his aggression.

However, Elkann remains wary of the threat posed by Torino, and their in-form forward Alessio Cerci in particular.

"Who will decide the derby? The bull, Tevez," the brother of FIAT chairman John Elkann told Tuttosport.

"In the Champions League, Juve has not started at their best. But, as in life, it is wrong to make a judgement right at the start.

"Over the past two years, the club has shown strength and determination in every sector. They can go far this season.

"But beware of Cerci. Beyond the individual talent, I have to say that the coach [Giampero Ventura] has done a good job overall."

Meanwhile, Elkann then turned his attention to the incidents of racism that have marred the opening rounds of the new Serie A season.

"Enough with racism," he pleaded. "Italian football has become an adult: one has to be civil. Enough wasting time and energy with this negativity.

"For the sake of Serie A, there needs to be positivity, as we are losing competitiveness not only to the Liga, but also to the Bundesliga, Premier League and even Ligue 1."

The Derby della Mole is scheduled to kick off at 12:30CET on Sunday.

Line-ups: Torino-Juventus

Sep 29, 2013

The Derby della Mole is today’s early kick-off, as Alessio Cerci takes on Carlos Tevez in the Battle of Turin.

http://markting10.nl/

Juventus have been stuttering of late, going behind against Copenhagen, Verona and Chievo, but fighting back to get results.

Simone Pepe, Martin Caceres and Rubinho are unavailable, but Andrea Pirlo is rested ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Galatasaray.

Paul Pogba and Claudio Marchisio instead pull the midfield strings with Arturo Vidal.

Sebastian Giovinco is the new partner for Tevez, but ex-Torino captain Angelo Ogbonna is on the bench.

Torino are having a strong start to this season and particularly Cerci, who is joint Capocannoniere with Giuseppe Rossi of Fiorentina on five goals.

He is joined by Ciro Immobile, who is unusually co-owned by Juventus and Torino.

The statistics are not happy reading for the Granata, who haven’t even scored against Juve since 2002 and are without a victory since 1995.

Alessandro Gazzi, Paulo Vitor Barreto and Jean-Francois Gillet remain suspended in the Calcioscommesse scandal.

TORINO: Padelli; Rodriguez, Glik, Moretti; Darmian, Brighi, Vives, El Kaddouri, D’Ambrosio; Cerci, Immobile

Elsewhere, Sebastian Giovinco will make his first start of the season and he will be expected to support Carlos Tevez, who will feature as a lone centre-forward.

Meanwhile, hosting Torino have pushed winger Alessio Cerci into a striker's role following his recent run of form that has seen him score five goals in as many outings.

HT 0-0: Turin Derby stalemate

Sep 29, 2013

It has been a tense first half of the Turin Derby, as Alessio Cerci and Carlos Tevez had the best chances.

http://markting10.nl/

The Derby della Mole has not been kind to Torino recently, as they were without a win since 1995 and hadn’t even scored in 14 editions, losing seven of the last eight. Andrea Pirlo was rested ahead of the Champions League game with Galatasaray, while Sebastian Giovinco was the new partner for Carlos Tevez. Ciro Immobile is co-owned between Juve and Toro, starting alongside Capocannoniere Alessio Cerci.

Danilo D’Ambrosio’s header was over the bar from a free kick, then scrambled back with a crucial clearance to stop Tevez getting on the end of a Giovinco cut-back at the other end.

Claudio Marchisio and Paul Pogba went into the book for taking down Immobile and Omar El Kaddouri on strong runs. Cerci curled one of his trademark free kicks just past the near top corner.

Tevez crossed for the head of Giovinco, but it was intercepted by defenders, while Stephan Lichtsteiner’s attempt was hoofed wide. Immobile was also carded for a very late tackle from behind on Tevez’s ankle.

Pogba pounces to maintain Old Lady's derby dominance

The Frenchman nodded home from close range in the second half after Carlos Tevez's
header hit the crossbar to move the champions level with Napoli at the Serie A summit.

rgwmsi.jpg

Sep 29, 2013

A controversial Paul Pogba goal settled the Derby della Mole as Juventus secured a 1-0 triumph over Torino at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

http://markting10.nl/

The France international headed home a rebound from close range after Carlos Tevez had nodded Leonardo Bonucci's flick onto the bar, with replays suggesting that the Argentine striker was in an offside position when he met the ball.

Juventus dictated the tempo in a drab first half, with Claudio Marchisio coming closest on the stroke of half-time with a low drive, but in the second half they turned their possession into a decisive goal thanks to Pogba's intervention, moving them level with Napoli at the top of Serie A on 16 points prior to Roma's game with Bologna.

Torino started with the league's joint-top scorer Alessio Cerci leading their line, while Juventus restored Tevez to the starting XI after he was rested for the 2-1 victory over Chievo on Wednesday.

The Bianconeri controlled the early possession but failed to create any clear-cut chances.

They almost found a breakthrough in the 14th minute when Sebastian Giovinco wriggled through several challenges on the right before delivering for Tevez, but the danger was snuffed out by a last-ditch clearance from Danilo D'Ambrosio.

As the hosts began to settle they won a series of set-pieces and they almost capitalised in the 26th minute when Cerci curled his 25-yard free-kick into the side netting.

Antonio Conte's side continued to look more threatening on the ball, however. Stephan Lichtsteiner's effort from distance curled wide before Juve could have stolen ahead in first-half injury time when Marchisio's 20-yard driven effort went narrowly wide of Daniele Padelli's post.

The visitors' pressure did not let up in the second half and Giovinco should have put Juventus ahead when a neat touch by Tevez left him one-on-one with the goalkeeper but he hit a tame effort straight at Padelli.

But Juventus deservedly took the lead in the 54th minute.

Bonucci headed a corner goalwards and Tevez somehow managed to head against the crossbar from two yards but the resultant rebound was nodded home by Pogba. However, television replays suggested that Tevez may have been in an offside position when he met the defender's flick on.

Marchisio was lucky not to receive his marching orders 10 minutes later when he lunged into a tackle on Giuseppe Vives when already on a yellow card as the match began to spark a litte more into life.

The hosts had a penalty shout waved away when Ciro Immobile went to ground under Giorgio Chiellini's challenge but referee Paolo Mazzoleni was unmoved.

Juventus almost grabbed a second in the 84th minute when Mirko Vucinic guided a back-post volley goalwards but Padelli parried away the danger, while substitute Alexander Farnerud came close to meeting a cut-back for the hosts in the final ten minutes.

Despite a late flurry of pressure, Torino were unable to find that elusive equaliser, meaning their 18-year wait for a win against their city rivals goes on.

Juve win contentious Turin Derby

Juventus won the Turin Derby with a Paul Pogba goal that should’ve
been ruled offside, though Toro were largely toothless.

Ciro Immobile is co-owned between Juve and Toro, starting alongside Capocannoniere Alessio Cerci.

http://markting10.nl/

‘Apache’ fired over from the edge of the box within seconds of the restart, then flicked on a Kwadwo Asamoah pass for Giovinco, who side-footed his finish straight at Daniele Padelli from close range.

The pressure was building and paid off when Juventus took the lead. Tevez’s header from a corner cracked against the crossbar, but Pogba was alert and turned in the rebound. However, the Granata complained that Tevez appeared to be offside when he started the move.

Marchisio risked a second yellow card with a clumsy tackle on D’Ambrosio, but the referee gave him a final warning.

Asamoah set up Tevez for a drive that was deflected inches past the far post. Cerci went down in the box, but there was barely any contact and the referee waved play on.

Padelli needed a wonderful one-handed save to palm away a volley into the ground by substitute Mirko Vucinic.

Torino: Padelli; Glik, Rodriguez (S Masiello 46), Moretti; Darmian, Brighi, Vives (Farnerud 86), El Kaddouri (Meggiorini 68), D’Ambrosio; Cerci, Immobile

Juventus: Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Vidal, Pogba, Marchisio, Asamoah (Padoin 74); Tevez (Quagliarella 91), Giovinco (Vucinic 78)

Conte: 'Immobile red card'

Antonio Conte hit back after Juventus won the Turin Derby
with an offside goal. “Ciro Immobile should’ve been sent off”.

dw2xbo.jpg

Sep 29, 2013

Paul Pogba nodded in the only goal of the game to beat Torino 1-0, but Carlos Tevez was clearly offside during the move.

http://markting10.nl/

“I was told Tevez was offside during the goal, but he also risked his ankle on Immobile’s challenge before that,” Conte told Sky Sport Italia.

“He suffered a serious cut to his ankle and who knows how it might’ve ended if Toro had gone down to 10 men. Immobile should’ve been sent off.

“Mistakes can happen for referees and it is inevitable that debatable incidents will occur, but the team played well and took the initiative throughout.

“Today we were much more attentive and didn’t allow Torino anything, despite their excellent players on the counter-attack. Compared to previous games, we brought back the three-man defence that had done so well last season.

“There was only one team that looked for the victory and that was Juventus. Torino sat back and waited, even after going a goal down. It’s a difficult League and our opponents change their whole approach to limit us rather than play their own football.

“Torino are very organised tactically and use a very defensive system, but in the second half as they got tired the spaces started to open up a bit.”

Andrea Pirlo had been man-marked in recent matches, so Conte opted to rest him against Torino.

“Arturo Vidal was marked by Omar El Kaddouri, so I moved Pogba to make his physicality felt. The goal changed it and we moved to a 4-3-3, putting Simone Padoin in a more advanced position with Mirko Vucinic and Tevez.

“Pirlo is unique and inimitable, so without him we lose in quality and gain in physicality. I had to rotate the squad with so many games coming up. I have faith in the squad.”

Bianconeri edge out a disciplined Granata

9uxkk6.jpg

Sep 29, 2013

Torino were defeated 1-0 by Juventus in the Derby della Mole at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday afternoon in Serie A.

http://markting10.nl/

A close range header from Bianconeri midfielder Paul Pogba was enough to decide the match between Turin rivals Juventus and Torino in a game that failed to live up to expectation.

A first half lacking quality began with the hosts looking nervous and conceding possession constantly as they looked to clear their lines and maintain a strong defensive position to repel the Bianconeri, however, Antonio Conte’s men did little to trouble keeper Daniele Padelli during the first 45.

It was actually the Granata that had the better of the first half opportunities, mainly from set pieces, with the Old Lady largely restricted to two tame shots from distances from midfielders Pogba and Claudio Marchisio.

On 14 minutes it was Danilo D’Ambrosio who wasted the clearest chance of the first half after a wonderful set piece delivery from Omar El Kaddouri found the wing-back six yards from goal, but he could only head well over.

Ten minutes later Torino were given another opportunity from a free-kick after El Kaddouri carried the ball purposefully from his own half towards the Juventus box only for Pogba to recklessly and cynically foul the Moroccan, however, the resulting free-kick was bent just wide of the post by Alessio Cerci.

While the Frenchman’s challenge was poor it wasn’t the worst of the first half with referee Paolo Mazzoleni allowing plenty to go unpunished. On 36 minutes Carlos Tevez skipped away from Ciro Immobile and with no chance at reaching the ball he lunged at the Argentinean’s trailing right calf and should probably have received more than the yellow shown.

Juventus certainly displayed greater composure with the ball, yet they were also allowed to with Giampiero Ventura happy for his side to defend deep and break with the impressive Cerci clearly troubling the Bianconeri back free when receiving the ball.

Early in the second half Juventus finally created a clear opening with some clever one touch passing putting Sebastian Giovinco eight yards from goal with just Padelli to beat but the diminutive striker struck the ball into the legs of the Italian.

Moments later the visitors did take the lead after a corner was headed towards goal by Leonardo Bonucci and as it struck the shoulder of an offside Tevez the ball ricocheted off the crossbar only for Pogba to stoop and head home from close range.

After conceding the goal the Bianconeri dominated the next 20 minutes forcing Il Toro to sit back and defend more out of necessity than as a long-term tactical plan, but with time running out the hosts began to pressure Conte’s side to appease a frustrated home crowd.

The arrival of Mirko Vucinic for Giovinco brought the only other clear goal scoring opportunity for Juventus as he carefully steered a volley towards the Torino net that Padelli saved acrobatically to deny the Bianconeri a two goal cushion.

Initial reaction and random observations

2lbde6g.jpg

Sep 29, 2013

Short-attention-span writing and reading as I'm still trying to comprehend what hour of the morning it is after Juventus' win over Torino in this season's first edition of the Derby della Mole.

http://markting10.nl/

Man of the Match: Paul Pogba. The discussion starts and ends right here. Got the game-winning goal, played a nearly flawless second half against Torino, and did so while playing all three spots in the center of the midfield. He went from playing in front of the defense a la Andrea Pirlo, to swapping positions with Arturo Vidal, to then switching for a few minutes with Claudio Marchisio, and then back to sitting in front of the back three. That takes a lot, no matter who you are. Once again, this 20-year-old kid played like a 10-year veteran in a hard-fought derby victory. Just another day in the life of Paul Pogba, I guess. Or at least it seems that way.

•Torino didn't have a shot on target. Gigi Buffon is back to stealing checks.

•In all seriousness, though, the Juventus defense really played a very good game, especially Giorgio Chiellini. Sure, Toro weren't ever close to being consistently dangerous when they actually did attack instead of looking totally stagnant, but when Buffon doesn't have to even try and make a save on a shot on goal over the course of 90 minutes, you know you're doing something right.

•Yellow card, huh? Come on, Ciro. You're better than that. (At least I think so.)

•You guys see Carlos Tevez defending in the last few minutes before Fabio Quagliarella replaced him in the final minute of the second half? You should have, because he was working his tail off. And that was after he was getting absolutely beat up by almost everybody in a Torino jersey.

•Grinding out a result in a derby. That's so Juventus.

•Contrary to popular belief, Sebastian Giovinco wasn't all that bad. WhoScored says he was one of Juventus' least effective players, but I feel pretty safe in saying that Giovinco was better than Tevez in the first 45 minutes of the game. Obviously Carlitos got more involved in a lot of aspects in the second half, but sometimes the doom and gloom surrounding a certain Atomic Ant isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

•Juventus' next four opponents: Galatasaray, Milan, Fiorentina, Real Madrid. For a month that has a two-week international break thrown right into the middle of it, that's certainly one heck of a slate of games that are on deck.

Torino vs. Juventus: Score and Grades

c2fbp.jpg

Sep 29, 2013

Paul Pogba scored the only goal of the game as Juventus continued their Serie A dominance over neighbours Torino.

http://markting10.nl/

But the 54th-minute goal came with controversy after Carlos Tevez appeared to be in an offside position as he headed against the crossbar from two yards out before Pogba pounced on the rebound.

The result saw Juve maintain an 18-year unbeaten league run against their Turin rivals, who rarely threatened.

The first half was a disappointing affair, punctuated by several yellow cards for hefty challenges and one opportunity on goal for Torino.

Danilo D'Ambrosio rose highest inside the Juventus penalty area to connect with a free-kick, but headed over with just Gianluigi Buffon to beat.

But Juve were a far different proposition in the second period with Tevez playing the central role, controlling the game for the Serie A champions.

Juve broke the deadlock in the 54th minute when Tevez headed against Daniele Pandelli's crossbar from just two yards, but Pogba was on hand to head home the rebound.

However, television replays showed the Argentina international was in an offside position.

But Juve, ultimately, deserved the three points for the improved second-half display, while Torino disappointed in front of their own supporters with Cerci isolated up front.

Player gradings

Paul Pogba B

Playing in the creative Andrea Pirlo role, Pogba endured a stifled first period. The former Manchester United man seemed off the pace and unable to open the Torino backline.

He was on hand to head home the only goal of the game, much to the relief of teammate Tevez, who had missed from just two yards out with his header.

Pogba found greater influence in the second half and Manchester United supporters can be forgiven for asking why the Old Trafford club allowed him to leave.

Carlos Tevez A

Tevez was on the end of one severe challenge during the opening 45 minutes which saw Ciro Immobile cautioned for raking the former Manchester City forward's ankle.

The Argentina international was always looking for the opportunity, but a lack of creation saw him stymied up front, paired with Sebastian Giovinco, in the first half.

The second period was a different story, however, with Tevez finding the space to puncture the Torino defence.

He might have been embarrassed to miss a header from two yards out, but Pogba spared his blushes by slotting the rebound.

His positional sense remains fabulous and running a match from the position of forward is no mean feat, but comes naturally to Tevez.

Danilo D'Ambrosio B+

D'Ambrosio went closest for Torino in the first period when his header flew wide of Buffon's goal.

But the Torino defender was always seeking a chance to move forward and dealt well with the attacking threat of Juventus.

The switched to right-back for the second period seemed to be a positive move for the player, who prefers that position. But D'Ambrosio's attacking influence was negated by an improved Juventus display.

Alessio Cerci B-

Torino's leading goalscorer was not allowed a chance to shine in the opening half, but was always on the look-out for an opportunity to create space for himself and teammates.

Cerci found himself cast adrift at times against the Juventus back three, with Immobile required in a deeper role for Torino.

Cerci really found space only in the dying embers of the game and it took a crude challenge from Tevez to deny him a late chance of a run on goal.

Ultimately, though, this was a game Cerci will want to forget swiftly after making little impact as his teammates appeared to sit back.

Juventus remain kings of Turin

2ywuzwj.jpg

Sep 29, 2013

Juventus continued their strong start to the Serie A season as Paul Pogba's solitary strike secured a 1-0 victory over city rivals Torino.

http://markting10.nl/

The Bianconeri came into the weekend unbeaten and kept up the pressure at the top of the table thanks to Pogba's second-half header. Torino, without a win over Juve since 1995, never looked in danger of breaking that unwanted record and produced few chances of merit over the 90 minutes.

It's been 11 years since Torino have scored a goal against Juventus, and the hurt continued with Sunday's Derby della Mole. Meanwhile, Juventus finally scored first in a match and held on to secure victory to keep up with the rest of the contenders in Serie A. Yet despite the superior quality of their play, all Italy can focus on is the controversial manner in which Juventus have won another game: with an offside goal.

As seems to be the norm when playing the Bianconeri, Torino, like Chievo Verona before them, played a defensive game. Sitting deep, congesting the area and closing down the space, their aim for the game was to stop Juventus from playing through the middle.

The Old Lady, in response, remained patient. Circulating the ball from side to side until she felt comfortable enough to play through the spaces, but it was proving difficult to penetrate the Granata defence.

Such a patient game only serves to make Andrea Pirlo's absence more keenly felt. There was little creativity and lots of imprecise passes forward, and the tempo was poorly controlled. Paul Pogba may be capable of doing it all in midfield, but he seemed wasted when deployed so deep with the attack sorely missing his pace and timely insertions at the top.

Interestingly, last season, Juventus had two versions of themselves depending on which of the duo they opted to play. When Pirlo was on the pitch, Juventus dominated proceedings, rotated the ball and patiently waited for excellent passes to unlock defences. When Pogba was deployed instead, the Old Lady played a quicker game where acceleration was key, intensity was heightened and the game was based around overwhelming the opposition.

Against Torino, Juventus played a Pirlo game without the player there to actually influence proceedings, when they ought to have played a quicker and more intense game. This only served to highlight the perfection of Torino manager Giampiero Ventura's game plan, as Il Toro succeeded in stifling Juve's attack, halting the intricate passing in the middle and forcing Juve wide. Crosses into the box were hardly a problem for the home side when there, in the middle for Juve, was little Sebastian Giovinco.

Giovinco, for all his tenacity and eagerness to impress, suffers with the Juve shirt. Whilst we must acknowledge the many fouls he suffered that should have been punished, he is a player lacking in strength. It remains an easy task to snatch the ball away from him, and he's easily overwhelmed. His clever movements and at times good positioning should be complimented, but when his shots are always aimed at the goalkeeper (much like last season), he quickly reminds his critics of his many deficiencies as a forward.

Of course, one must also feel for the player, as Juve's game in the first half was slow and revolved around crosses and long balls. With a quicker game, Gio would have broken free from his markers, and with short and low passes, he could have made more of an impact. That sort of game played by the Old Lady required the presence of Juve's other forwards, namely a certain Fernando Llorente.

In the second half, Juventus returned with greater motivation and looked determined to push through to get a result. And so, they did. A perfect delivery into the box saw Carlos Tevez hit the crossbar before Pogba scored. Replays show Tevez was clearly offside and the goal should not have counted, yet once again Juventus won a game in a controversial manner -- even if they deserved to be in the lead.

Torino, rather than opening up to have a go at scoring themselves, remained faithful to their tough defensive game for much of the second half, really looking threatening in only the final minutes of the match. Silly fouls and individual errors denied them of any real opportunity at goal, but their courageous game came too little, too late.

Tevez was once again the Bianconeri's outstanding performer. His mobility, ability to play between the lines and strength in shielding the ball make all the difference for Antonio Conte's men, as does the team's ability to maintain possession when closing out the match.

This may not be a dazzling Juve, but it's one that's doing the job for now, especially when considering the heavy schedule. Galatasaray are next.

Player Ratings

Goal took in the derby action at Stadio Olimpico, where Paul Pogba's goal in the second
half gave the Bianconeri all three points and shot them back up the Serie A standings.

Sep 29, 2013

Torino

Daniele Padelli
- Could hardly help the Juventus goal, and did what was expected with the otherwise routine tasks required of him.

Emiliano Moretti - Draped himself around Carlos Tevez on the corner that led to the goal, but was unable to stop the forward from getting a header in, though he may have been offside.

Guillermo Rodriguez - A real rock right at the heart of the Torino defence, mopping up danger without a moment's hesitation. His clearing header to deny Tevez the ball from inside the six yard box was particularly important.

Kamil Glik - Had a very speculative effort at goal from near the halfway line that predictably failed to worry Gianluigi Buffon. Otherwise, he did his job well at the back.

Danilo D'Ambrosio - Came close to converting Torino's - and the game's - best chance of the first half from a set-piece. Not much to speak of offensively, but he did put in a good shift in his own half.

Omar El Kaddouri - Took the brunt of the aggression from Juve's committed midfield, but to his credit, he never stopped trying to drive the ball forward. He also managed to draw two yellow cards, one for Claudio Marchisio and one for Paul Pogba. Faded badly in the second half though.

Giuseppe Vives - After a shaky start where he coughed up possession like a bad cold, the midfielder steadied himself to erect a formidable barrier in front of his defence, breaking up play with impunity.

Matteo Brighi - Though he expended a lot of fuel chasing play around the pitch, the game still seemed to pass him by on occasion. Did not really have an effect on the final result.

Matteo Darmian - He was rather hit or miss out wide, as he found it hard to fashion an opening for his side. But like Danilo D'Ambrosio on the opposite flank, he was very diligent defensively.

Alessio Cerci - Though he flashed one free kick agonizingly wide of the top corner, he was otherwise a little lethargic on and off the ball, though in fairness his service was lacking.

Ciro Immobile - His major contribution of the first half was to leave Sebastian Giovinco with a painful reminder of his stud size, with a late challenge that earned him a yellow card. Contributed little otherwise.

Substitutions

Salvatore Masiello
- Provided a serviceable job in defence, replacing Rodriguez for the second half. Looked a little short of pace at times, though.

Riccardo Meggiorini - Could not provide any kind of offensive input for the home side, as the match drifted beyond his reach.

http://markting10.nl/

Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon
- Barely had a meaningful touch of the ball all game long as Torino created almost nothing in the way of chances.

Andrea Barzagli - Went about his business in a confident manner, marshalling the defence well and communicating with the rest of the backline regularly. No slip-ups from him today.

Leonardo Bonucci - Virtually unbeatable in the air, as he showed a real nose for the ball on set plays and longs punts forward - as shown by his glancing header which led to the only goal. Like the rest of the defence, he was spot on in his tasks.

Giorgio Chiellini - His usual indomitable self at the back, first to every ball, and not allowing the opposition forwards an inch of useable space.

Stephan Lichtsteiner - Motored up and down the right flank, and though his final ball was found wanting, he still showed plenty of appetite for getting involved in the build-up play.

Claudio Marchisio - Picked up a yellow card for a sliding challenge and could thank his lucky stars that he did not see a second booking for an identical infraction. Otherwise, he was his usual bundle of activity.

Paul Pogba - Never lost his poise in midfield, helping out admirably in his own half and proving efficient, if not overly dynamic, on the ball in attack. He struck the all-important goal in the second half with a close range finish from a corner to give his side the points and derby bragging rights yet again.

Arturo Vidal - Looked completely up for the blood and thunder of the derby, refusing to surrender an inch in midfield. Played a strong part in closing out the game in the second half.

Kwadwo Asamoah - Provided a lot of energy out in wide areas, but could not come up with the end product to help his side in attack, despite being presented with a few opportunities to do so.

Carlos Tévez - A more reliable option up front than the embattled Sebastian Giovinco, as his touch and tenacity made him a solid outlet for the home side. Worked hard to close out the game late on.

Sebastian Giovinco - Took a bit of a battering from the physical Torino defence, and he could not shake that off, as his offensive contributions were severely stymied. Shot his one great opening straight at the keeper from point blank range.

Substitutions

Simone Padoin
- Helped to solidify the left flank in the closing stages.

Mirko Vučinić - Hardly had a touch in his short spell on the pitch as, by the time he arrived, Juve's focus has shifted to protecting their narrow lead.

Pogba delighted with 'difficult' derby victory

The Frenchman nodded home the only goal of the game on Sunday to seal maximum points
for the Italian champions but has urged focus ahead of the Champions League return.

Sep 29, 2013

Paul Pogba was relieved with Juventus' 1-0 derby win over Torino in a tightly-contested affair at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

http://markting10.nl/

The Frenchman scored the only goal of the game in the second half, to leave Torino looking for a first Serie A victory over their city rivals since 1995.

But the goal was not without controversy as Carlos Tevez headed against the crossbar from two yards while seemingly in an offside position, with Pogba nodding home the rebound, although the former Manchester United man was simply happy to head into their Champions League commitments next week off the back of a victory.

"It was a difficult game," he commented to reporters.

"We're all happy about claiming all three points and returning to the top of the league. Now we'll focus our attentions on the Champions League.

"We drew the first game so it's vital we beat Galatasaray."

Conte fumes at Immobile challenge

Paul Pogba nodded home a controversial winner in Sunday's derby with Carlos Tevez
in an offside position, but the Juventus coach believes the Argentine was lucky not to be injured.

Sep 29, 2013

Antonio Conte was furious that Ciro Immobile escaped a red card for a challenge on Carlos Tevez during Juventus' 1-0 win over Torino in the Derby della Mole on Sunday.

http://markting10.nl/

Paul Pogba nodded in a controversial winner in the second half, with the Frenchman reacting first to a rebound after Tevez had headed against the crossbar when in a clear offside position.

However, rather than consider his side fortunate to be awarded the goal, Conte believes the Argentine was fortunate to be on the pitch following Immobile's lunge earlier in the game.

"I was told Tevez was offside for the goal, but he also risked his ankle on Immobile’s challenge before that," the Bianconeri boss told Sky Sport Italia.

"He suffered a serious cut to his ankle and who knows how it might’ve ended if Toro had gone down to 10 men. Immobile should’ve been sent off.

"Mistakes can happen for referees and it is inevitable that debatable incidents will occur, but the team played well and took the initiative throughout."

Conte felt his side were worthy winners of a tense encounter at Stadio Olimpico after Torino set their stall out to contain the Italian champions.

"There was only one team that looked for the victory and that was Juventus," he continued. "Torino sat back and waited, even after going a goal down. It’s a difficult League and our opponents change their whole approach to limit us rather than play their own football.

"We were much more attentive and didn’t allow Torino anything, despite their excellent players they had on the counter-attack. Compared to previous games, we brought back the three-man defence that performed so well last season.

"Torino are tactically well organised and use a very defensive system, but in the second half as they got tired the spaces started to open up a bit."

Andrea Pirlo was rested for the clash ahead of Juventus' Champions League meeting with Galatasaray, but Conte insists his side have enough strength in depth to cope with continual rotation in a busy period of fixtures.

"Pirlo is unique and inimitable, so without him we lose some quality and gain in physicality. I had to rotate the squad with so many games coming up, but I have faith in them," he added.

Pogba refusing to dwell on derby win

The Frenchman is already turning his attention to Wednesday's Champions
League clash with Galatasaray after scoring the winner against Torino.

Sep 29, 2013

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has told his team-mates not to dwell on their 1-0 derby victory over Torino on Sunday.

http://markting10.nl/

The Bianconeri kept up their unbeaten start to the 2013-14 Serie A season with a narrow victory over their city rivals, with the Frenchman bagging the only goal of the game.

However, they face Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday and Pogba is already thinking of the clash with the Turkish champions.

"Now we’ll concentrate on the Champions League. We drew the first game, so it’s fundamental that we win on Wednesday night," he told the club's official website.

Reflecting on the trip to the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday, Pogba said that his side were made to work hard for all three points.

"It was a difficult game but we’re all happy with the victory and reclaiming top spot, even if momentarily."

Juventus will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing draw with Copenhagen when they host Galatasaray on Wednesday.

Ventura: 'Toro could've done more'

Torino Coach Giampiero Ventura admits they “could’ve done more” in the 1-0 defeat to Juventus.

http://markting10.nl/

The Granata are without a Derby della Mole victory since 1995 and haven’t scored in any of the last 15 editions.

“There were teams on the field with different qualities,” Ventura told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were able to be aggressive against Juve last season, but this time round we have a different structure. We limited Juventus and they had very few opportunities, though we should’ve done better in possession.

“Juventus are the best side we’ve faced so far. It’s difficult to be aggressive against their defence.”

There was controversy on both sides, as Ciro Immobile and Claudio Marchisio risked red cards, while Paul Pogba’s winning goal was offside.

“I couldn’t see the offside from my bench and I had hoped it was not a mistake. I am satisfied with the way we defended, though we could’ve done more in attack.

“Aside from this performance, we cannot cancel out the fact we could’ve easily won against Milan and Hellas Verona. We deserve more points than we have.”

Toro: 'How does Conte count?'

eu2dug.jpg

Sep 29, 2013

Torino released a statement slamming Juventus Coach Antonio Conte after the controversial Derby della Mole.

http://markting10.nl/

Juve won 1-0 with a Paul Pogba goal that should’ve been ruled offside, while both clubs complained they wanted red cards for Ciro Immobile and Claudio Marchisio.

Following Conte’s post-match comments to the media, Torino released a statement bitterly criticising the Bianconeri Coach.

“How does Conte count?” began the statement on the club website.

“At the end of the Derby Antonio Conte declared, responding to those who asked about the goal on which Carlos Tevez was clearly offside, said ‘Juve held the ball and attacked for 70 minutes. Therefore it’s normal there are going to be more incidents to discuss.’

“One has to ask what Conte’s using to count possession, seeing as the statistics on the Lega Calcio website show Juventus had 52 per cent possession against 48 per cent for Toro. The Juventus superiority was therefore not particularly crushing.

“Another of Conte’s comments: ‘Immobile’s foul was worthy of a red card. What would’ve happened had Toro been reduced to 10 men?’

“Was Immobile’s foul really worth a dismissal? In which case the Granata would have the same question, what would’ve happened had the identical foul from Pogba on Omar El Kaddouri been sanctioned with a red, or the second yellow that Claudio Marchisio deserved?

“The truth is that Juventus won the Derby 1-0 and that the only goal was with a very clear offside position. Anything else is just pointless words. Conte must certainly have been better at Italian than mathematics.”

Tevez: 'Immobile nearly broke ankle'

Sep 29, 2013

Carlos Tevez and Juventus hit back at Torino via Twitter, as the Derby della Mole continues via social media.

http://markting10.nl/

The game ended 1-0 to the Bianconeri today with a Paul Pogba goal that should’ve been ruled offside.

Torino released a statement on their club website this evening attacking Coach Antonio Conte and comments on the refereeing decisions.

Tevez hit back on Twitter with this picture of his swollen and bloody ankle, an injury caused by Ciro Immobile’s tackle.

“We always win with help, so that’ll be why someone who nearly breaks my ankle only gets a yellow card...” wrote the striker.

Juventus also responded to Torino counting the possession statistics by listing some of their own.

“Effectively we’re not good at mathematics. But we can count to 0, like the number of shots on target Torino had!”

Torino vs. Juventus (0-1): 6 Things We Learned

28w2xsi.jpg

Sep 29, 2013

Juventus won another Derby against city-rivals Torino.

http://markting10.nl/

A solitary strike from Paul Pogba was enough to give Antonio Conte's side their third successive victory in the league after dropping points at Inter.

The winning habit is still there, but the Bianconeri have not put in a sensational performance since their demolition of Lazio.

Galatasaray await midweek in the Champions League. The Old Lady will have to be more efficient in their performance to kick-start their European campaign after a disappointing draw in Copenghagen.

Defensive tactics from Torino almost worked, but too much pressure falls on the shoulders of Alessio Cerci.

Giampiero Ventura's side continue to be stubborn and resilient, but they are badly lacking that extra spark in the final third and when Cerci is unable to produce some magic, they look completely lost.

Here are six things that we learned from the Derby.

Giovinco Is a Shadow of the Player We Saw at Parma

Against Torino, Sebastian Giovinco had a rare opportunity to stake a claim for a more permanent role in the Juve lineup.

"Formica Atomica" started alongside Carlos Tevez in a partnership that appeared to hold much potential.

With Carlitos scurrying into the space behind the opposition's defence, holding onto the last man, combined with Giovinco's winding dribbles and tendency to slip his strike partner in with his vision, it appeared as if Antonio Conte might have stumbled across an effective partnership.

But Giovinco frustrated throughout, holding on to the ball for far too long, dribbling away from Tevez and being blocked out by a crowd of Torino shirts.

The 26-year-old is a shadow of the player he once was during his time with Parma and an inability to make the right decision is holding him back as he attempts to make it at the next level with the Old Lady.

With close control and the ability to shift his weight from one side to another, due to his low centre of gravity, Giovinco should be a valuable member of this Bianconeri side.

"Atomic Ant" tends to fall over and crumble when faced with a physical confrontation, is in stark contrast to a more determined player that we saw under the guidance of Pasquale Marino, Franco Colomba and Roberto Donadoni.

Time is running out for Giovinco to convince Conte that he merits a regular place in the team and the Bianconeri might be convinced to sell if there is not a drastic change in his form.

Paul Pogba Cannot Be Dropped Right Now

Paul Pogba in this form is undroppable, which is good and bad for Conte.

On the one hand, he gives Conte a superb midfielder capable of contributing at both ends of the pitch and knitting together the team's transitions from defence to attack.

The 20-year-old does pose a slight problem, though. While the Frenchman is in the side, Conte must decide whether to play both Claudio Marchisio, coming off his recent injury. Conte also has Andre Pirlo, who sat out the Torino encounter with the Galatasaray match high on his agenda.

If all four midfielders, including Arturo Vidal as well, are to start for the Bianconeri, Juve will be heavily reliant on Carlos Tevez in a lone-forward role.

A switch of formation may begin to creep into Conte's thoughts as Mirko Vucinic is one of his favourites, while Fernando Llorente is gradually staking a claim to start regularly, too.

Pogba's form is nothing short of remarkable though and on current form, there is an argument to suggest he is Juve's best player at this moment.

Ventura's Tactics Worked, Despite Defeat

Giampiero Ventura's tactics must be applauded, even though the result did not go his way in the derby.

The Granata basically fielded a 5-3-1-1, with Alessio Cerci in the hole behind Ciro Immobile.

There was license for Danilo D'Ambrosio and Matteo Darmian to push forward and offer support in the wide areas, but these are ostensibly full-backs.

By starting deep, D'Ambrosio and Darmian prevented Stephan Lichtsteiner and Kwadwo Asamoah from reaching the byline and producing crosses across the six-yard box.

Toro were happy for Juve's wide men to drive crosses in from deeper areas as Carlos Tevez and Sebastian Giovinco faced tough aerial battles against the three centre-backs Kamil Klik, Guillermo Rodriguez and Emiliano Moretti.

Giuseppe Vives, Matteo Brighi and Omar El Kaddouri were able to provide a screen in front of the defence and forced Juve to try their hand at adventurous through passes.

The fact that the opener came from a set piece is telling, as the Bianconeri were unable to conjure up any substantial chances from open play, predominantly due to the organisation and tactical discipline instilled by Ventura.

Immobile Is Not the Right Type of Striker for This Formation

Ciro Immobile relies heavily on sharp movement off the last line of defence and clinical finishing mostly inside the penalty area.

Ventura is currently using him as a lone striker, with Alessio Cerci looking to support him in a more reserved role.

The problem is that Torino's play can be rather predictable. The centre-midfield trio rarely vary their distribution because Immobile is incapable of holding the ball up against top centre-backs such as Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli.

Everything is therefore directed into the feet of Cerci, meaning that the opposition can prejudge this by surrounding the Azzurri international.

A more physical striker with the ability to move both ways would be ideal, somebody in the shape of German Denis, who would be able to also take advantage of Cerci's delivery from wide areas with that aerial advantage.

Juve Missed Pirlo's Passing Variety

Juventus rested Andrea Pirlo ahead of the Champions League next week, but a combination of stifling tactics from Torino and the absence of a pace-setter disrupted the Old Lady's flow and ability to stamp their authority on this match.

The Bianconeri possess plenty of quality in the midfield without Pirlo, with Arturo Vidal, Paul Pogba and Claudio Marchisio offering a midfield trio that would be looked on by the majority of Europe with an envious eye.

But that trio lacks a leader, somebody capable of organising the midfield and distributing both short and long to adapt to the negative tactics of the opposition.

Pirlo is the orchestrator, as much as the play maker. The derby showed us that it's Pirlo's intangible skills, as much as his ability on the ball that makes the Bianconeri tick.

Tevez Needs More Continuity in Attack

Carlos Tevez had an off day against Torino and when Galatasaray come to Turin next week, the Argentine will need to be more clinical in front of goal.

Carlitos could not find his range in the derby, aiming several shots into the stands and never really threatening Daniele Padelli's goal.

If Conte is to field four centre-midfielders due to the excellent form of Paul Pogba, Juve will require Tevez to be red hot in front of goal to compensate for the lack of an additional striker.

The Bianconeri are controlling games with their formidable midfield, but they require Tevez to take his chances in front of goal, or opponents will continue to deploy similarly negative tactics to the Granata.

Whether Conte tries a 3-6-1 formation or continues to provide El Apache with a partner, Tevez needs continuity.

The season is still young, but Tevez will eventually need to build an understanding on a regular basis with one of Juve's other striking options.

Fernando Llorente, Mirko Vucinic, Fabio Quagliarella and Sebastian Giovinco would all be competing for that second spot in the attack if Juve continue with a 3-5-2 formation.

If Conte continues to rotate these four strikers, it will hinder Tevez's consistency in front of goal.

Conte revels in battling Juventus derby win

Antonio Conte praised his Juventus team for breaking down an organised
Torino side in their 1-0 victory in the Turin derby on Sunday.

Paul Pogba scored the only goal of the game in the second half at the Stadio Olimpico, extending Torino's 18-year wait for a Serie A victory over their rivals.

http://markting10.nl/

The winning goal came in controversial circumstances as Carlos Tevez, who appeared to be offside, headed against the crossbar from close range before Pogba nodded home the rebound.

But the visitors were generally good value for the victory and created more clear-cut opportunities than their opponents.

And Conte was particularly pleased with the way his side maintained their focus.

"It's not easy to win here and we're delighted that we've managed to do so," Conte said.

"We were more alert and precise than we have been in other games, shutting Torino out in spite of their ability on the counter.

"We produced a little less going forward. Credit to Torino, they're well organised and it's tough to find space in behind."

Conte also revealed that he made tactical changes throughout the match in order to counter specific threats from Torino.

He added: "I switched Pogba and Vidal. Vidal was closely marked by Omar El Kaddouri and Paul was able to use his physical attributes to better effect.

"I also went to a four-man defence after we scored because I didn't want to leave three on three at the back."

JUVENTUS - GALATASARAY

Juventus Stadium — Turin
Referee: Viktor Kassai (Hungary)

Mancini to be new Galatasaray Coach

Sep 29, 2013

Roberto Mancini is practically the new Coach of Galatasaray and his first game will be on Wednesday against Juventus.

http://markting10.nl/

The negotiations had been going on for several days, as the former Manchester City and Inter manager was first pick after Fatih Terim was fired in a contract dispute.

This evening Mancini flew in to Istanbul to complete the paperwork and the official Galatasaray Twitter account released a photograph of the Italian sitting with Chief Executive Lufti Aribogan.

Mancio’s first match in charge will be on Wednesday night, when Galatasaray visit the Juventus Stadium in Turin for the Champions League.

Among the players at his disposal in Turkey are Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba.
