Dani Alves says he came to Juventus “to make history”, which “isn’t just winning the Italian League”.

The right-back joined the Bianconeri from Barcelona this summer, and the Turin giants are currently the only side in Europe still in the running for the treble.

“When I came here, they told me to come and make history with this team,” Dani Alves told Sky.

“History isn’t just winning the Italian League, it’s dreaming about something more, we continue to dream and work to make this dream come true.

“The 2015 final in Berlin? I honestly thought that when we played that final, Juve showed Barça too much respect.

“When you’re playing these kind of teams then there will obviously be respect because they’re two very strong teams, but you have to leave that respect off the pitch and find a way to win.”

Marco Tardelli believes “Juventus will go through” against Monaco, but warns “it won’t be easy”.

The Bianconeri face the Ligue 1 side in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday and the former midfielder believes they will progress to the final in Cardiff.

“Monaco are physically good and they have quality players,” Tardelli told Rai.

“It won’t be easy, but Juventus will grow through. When the Bianconeri want to win they do it, they almost succeeded in Bergamo, but paid for some lapses of concentration.”

Juventus is back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Stade Louis II in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals to take on red-hot AS Monaco.

Monaco sits in first place in Ligue 1, and nearly locked up the title on Sunday as PSG fell 3-1 to Nice, thanks in part to an early goal from Mario Balotelli. I can’t say much more about them than has already been covered by CH Ho, so I won’t.

Monaco does enter Wednesday night’s first leg with a pretty lengthy injury list, though (taken from here).

The only two missing Juventus players for this game due to injury should be Marko Pjaca (season-ending knee injury) and possibly Daniele Rugani (maybe a season-ending knee injury). Sami Khedira, thanks to his questionable yellow card in the quarterfinals against Barcelona, is suspended for the first leg.

All things considered, who would you like to see start on Wednesday? Remember, this is who YOU want to see start, not who you think Max Allegri will pick for the starting lineup.

Lichsteiner would be good in this kind of game. I feel like he defends better than Dani Alves and that would be more necessary in the away leg.
Why is Khedira an option? He is suspended.
I'd take Marchisio over Pjanic for added midfield stability against a swarming Monaco side.
Juve will slow the tempo to minimize speed from Monaco players. Kill the game from dead ball.
While Marchiso isn't a surprising inclusion since Khedera is suspended but I think this maybe the game where he reminds us the fans what he really is capable of. His inclusion frees up Pjanic to Venture forward with ease which increases our creativity in the final third.
4-2-3-1 formation gives juve the right balance
No suprises

Marchisio should be a starter. He deserves his chance to get back on his amazing box-to-box performance.
Benatia because he's awesome.
No interesting inclusion. The team picks itself (especially with Khedira's suspension).
marchisio, sub for khedira.
Lichtsteiner due to his defensive abilities as opposed to Dani Alves
3-5-2 counters Monaco's press
I opt for 5 midfielders an no wingers - quadrado and dybala play support strikers behind gonzalo
Swap Marchisio for Khedira
Ali Yusuf Hassan
3 midfield with marchisio as regista. Monaco are very vertical and that job for marchisio NOW with a double pivot its just too much. Besides, we got the clock in our side and two subs to counterattack (cuadrado and mandzukic) late in the game.

Monaco welcome Juventus in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash as the pair battle in the south of France on Wednesday.

Both teams have been impressive during their runs to the last four and will now compete for a berth in the prestigious final.

The Bianconeri continue to lead the standings in Serie A, dominating the division, nine points clear of Roma.

Monaco lead the way in Ligue 1 as they battle with Paris Saint-Germain and Nice for the championship crown.

Juventus defender Daniele Rugani is expected to miss the Old Lady's visit to Monaco's Stade Louis II Stadium after suffering a knee injury.

Rebecca Louise Coles of The Sun reported the impressive youngster would be absent for the Italian champions as they make the short journey across the French border from Turin. Monaco enter the game with no fresh injury concerns, with Kylian Mbappe expected to start at the point of the attack.

Monaco have been this season's surprise package in Europe's premier competition, producing regular displays of breathtaking football.

Mbappe's emergence has been undeniable, and the France international has developed into one of the world's most desired forwards in just 12 months.

The 18-year-old has scored five goals in only four Champions League starts, as well as netting 14 in Ligue 1, according to WhoScored.com.

Juve will be led by their own highly rated hitman, as Paulo Dybala continues to shine for the champions of Italy.

The Turin club have handed the player a new contract worth €7 million a year, keeping Dybala tied to the Italian side until 2022, per Corriere dello Sport (h/t Ryan Kelly of Goal). The Argentinian is said to be wanted by "half of Europe," with Real Madrid among the teams interested in his services.

Juve have the experience of operating deep into the competition over their opponents, but Monaco have become France's most impressive unit.

The Ligue 1 leaders have a wealth of talent throughout their squad, who will all be hunted by the world's top sides during the summer.

However, the Bianconeri's destruction of Barcelona in the last eight will have been duly noted by all onlookers.

David Trezeguet believes “Juventus are favourites” against Monaco, but wanted the sides to meet in the Champions League final.

The former striker played for both clubs during his career, and is the Bianconeri’s all-time foreign top goalscorer.

“To be honest, I wanted a Monaco-Juventus final, but they got drawn in the semis,” Trezeguet told FIFA’s official website.

“It's a special game for me because both clubs have been an important part of my life. I think Juventus are favourites given their history, but having seen what Monaco have done, they'll compete on an equal footing.”

Monaco and Juventus meet on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal. Ahead of the game, Julien Laurens and James Horncastle got to talking ...

Julien gets the debate going:

My dear James,

As you know, given you are still a young man yourself, youth is a great thing. You might lack some experience, but you have that incredible insouciance, that energy, that hunger and desire to make you achieve great things and reach summits you have never reached before.

Monaco have all of that; with an average age of 24, they are the youngest team in the Champions League this season. But they have taken the competition by storm, becoming the first team to get to the last four after having started at the third qualifying round stage, back on July 27 against Fenerbahce. They have never felt any pressure and never given up, even when they were behind at Manchester City in the first leg of the Round of 16; throughout this run, they have believed in themselves and their destiny.

You would also agree with me if I tell you that Gianluigi Buffon knows his football, no? Well, Buffon revealed this week that, 30 minutes into watching that game at the Etihad Stadium, he texted one of Juventus' directors that Monaco would reach the Champions League final this season. He knew then that the French side would be too good, even for Juve. Surely, you can't go against Gigi, can you?

Julien, mon ami,

I have a sneaking suspicion Buffon thought Juventus might make the final, as well. After all, this happens every time they play Monaco in the knockout stages. Out of kindness to you, I wasn't going to bring up 1998 and 2015, but go on, if you insist. Of course, Jules, you know Juventus' record against French teams in the Champions League: They've never once been eliminated by a team from Ligue 1 and, although Monaco can count on their full respect -- Massimiliano Allegri tweeted after the draw that it's simply not in Juventus' nature to underestimate anybody -- they will fancy themselves to reach a second final in three years.

I mean, be honest and put yourself in Juve's shoes. If you were asked to pick a semifinal opponent out of Atletico, Real and Monaco, who would you pick? Even knowing what we know now about Monaco, you'd still pick them, right? Kamil Glik said everybody makes this mistake: "They all want us, then they regret it," the ex-Torino captain warned. But Juventus remain wary. Buffon didn't want Leicester in the last round for the simple reason that everybody would expect Juve to go through comfortably and, while it's true that this matchup is more even, the psychology is similar.

Monaco have surprised people by getting this far, and they go into this tie with less pressure; they're playing with house money. (Fitting, really, given the Principality is home to the Casino Royale!) We also shouldn't forget that two years ago a very different Monaco were the most awkward opponent Juventus faced en route to the final. Allegri's side were fortunate the referee gave a penalty for a foul outside the box in Turin. Arturo Vidal converted and, in the end, that was all that separated the sides. I doubt this tie will see only one goal, though.

James, my great friend,

That is probably the only thing I will agree with you over this tie! You are right; there will be more than one goal because, unlike two seasons ago, Juventus will not keep this team quiet. It is almost impossible to do so: Monaco have scored 146 goals in all competitions this season, with 95 in Ligue 1!

When I remember the two Juventus vs. Lyon games this season -- the French club caused all sorts of problems in both matches -- I can't help but think that Monaco will get a few opportunities. That's all they need, because they have been so efficient this season. I know you keep going on about how this Juventus defence kept two clean sheets against Barcelona in the last round, but this is an average Barcelona side that should have never gone that far in the competition anyway.

Monaco have many more assets going forward, including wonderful full-backs Djibril Sidibe and Benjamin Mendy, movement from Radamel Falcao, pace from Kylian Mbappe, creativity from Thomas Lemar and Bernardo Silva and the power of Bakayoko in midfield. The danger comes from everywhere.

soc_Mbappe_Buffon_1296x729.jpg&w=738&sit
Who will come out on top when 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe, left, faces Gianluigi Buffon, 21 years his senior?

Jules, Jules, Jules,

That "average Barcelona side" still put six past Paris Saint-Germain, but Juve shut out Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar & Co. in back-to-back games. And as Allegri put it: "When [Andrea] Barzagli came on, we could've played a whole day and not conceded." They are unbeaten in the Champions League this season and haven't conceded in forever (531 minutes).

The Lyon game feels like a long time ago, and besides, it happened before Allegri decided over breakfast one morning to go all-in, fielding all of his attacking talent simultaneously in their new "Max-Five"/"Five Star" 4-2-3-1 formation. The spotlight really needs to shift onto the damage this Juventus attack can do to a flakey Monaco defence, because not enough people are talking about it. Like moths to the flame, it's all about Mbappe and Falcao versus Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci. But Jules, are you not afraid Monaco will get burned at the other end?

I mean, how many goals have Monaco shipped up until now? Eighteen, isn't it? EIGHTEEN. Even the unfairly maligned Gonzalo Higuain might score his first Champions League knockout goal in four years. I trust in Juventus' maturity. As Allegri says, this team is able to play several games in one; they know when to defend and how to suffer, when to kick the ball into the stands, as well as when to get the ball down and play and take the game to their opponent. Their game management is excellent. Monaco, on the other hand, were 3-1 up away to City, kept attacking and lost 5-3.

Good point, James!

I am actually glad you are mentioning Juve's system, because the 4-2-3-1, with Mario Mandzukic on the left, is perfect for Monaco; there is no way he will be able to defend the Monaco full-back on his side, for example. Sami Khedira is suspended for the first leg and will leave a huge hole that Claudio Marchisio can't fill. Leonardo Jardim could even mirror the Juve system by putting Mbappe on the left instead of the centre. Monaco won't fear Juventus in this tie; they have learned so much from all the big games they have played so far and now are ready for the biggest two of all.

What, Julien?

Mandzukic unable to defend his full-back? Sacre bleu, Jules! He could defend Castle Black on his own. His spirit of sacrifice is exactly what makes this system work; he presses from the front, tracks back and does an awesome job as an auxiliary full-back. It's Samuel Eto'o for Jose Mourinho in 2010 all over again and, come on now, don't make me ask what Inter did that year? Yes, Jules, they won the treble. It's on. It's time for Juve.

Free-scoring Monaco will look to break down the best defence in Europe when they host Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday.

The Ligue 1 leaders have scored plenty of goals this season and boast one of Europe's most exciting newcomers in striker Kylian Mbappe.

The 18-year-old has netted 18 goals in his last 18 competitive games, including three in the 6-3 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund in the last eight.

But Juventus boast the tightest defence in Europe's top club competition, with just two goals conceded in this campaign.

"Even Barcelona could not score in two games against them so it will be complicated for us", said Monaco defender Kamil Glik.

The Italian champions, who advanced to the last four with an aggregate 3-0 win over Barcelona, were held to a 2-2 draw at Atalanta in a rare defensive mix-up in Serie A on Friday.

Their pedigree and record for being impregnable when it matters, however, suggest Juventus should be regarded as the favourites.

"Monaco have technical and tactical qualities as well as talented young players," said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

"They do not have the same history as Juventus but that does not mean it will be easy for us to make it to the final."

Monaco have shone in Europe and at home this season and their domestic title hopes received a welcome boost when a nervous PSG side lost 3-1 at Nice on Sunday, leaving the club from the French Riviera three points clear at the top with a game in hand.

Juventus, meanwhile, are closing in on a record sixth straight Serie A title and can turn to their European history for inspiration, having won the showcase club competition twice, in 1985 and 1996.

Juventus beat Barcelona in the quarter-finals
Juventus beat Barcelona in the quarter-finals

Monaco, by contrast, reached the Champions League final only once, in 2004, losing 3-0 to a Porto side coached by Jose Mourinho after a great run featuring wins over Real Madrid and Chelsea.

The sides have faced each other twice before on the Champions League stage with Juventus winning both ties, in the 1998 semi-finals and the 2015 quarters.

Team news

Midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko is a doubt for Monaco due to a broken nose suffered in a training ground accident with team-mate Glik.

Juventus will be without defender Daniele Rugani due to a knee injury and midfielder Sami Khedira, who is serving a one-game suspension.

Opta stats

Monaco have reached the Champions League semis for the fourth time after 1993/94, 1997/98 and 2003/04. No other French team has made the last four more than once.

After failing to reach the last four of the Champions League from 2003/04 to 2013/14, Juventus have now made the semis for the second time in three seasons (after 2014/15).

Monaco have won 71% of their home games in the Champions League (22 out of 31). Among clubs to have hosted at least 30 games, only Real Madrid (76.5%), Barcelona (72.1%) & Bayern Munich (71.3%) have a better win ratio.

Monaco have scored exactly three goals in each of their four Champions League knockout games this season. In fact, they are the first team in the competition's history to find the net at least three times in four consecutive knockout games.

Gonzalo Higuain has scored only two goals in 24 Champions League knockout games. In the group stages, he's netted 13 goals in 38 games.

Falcao has scored 39 goals in the Europa League and Champions League since his debut in September 2009 against Chelsea; only Robert Lewandowski (41), Lionel Messi (77) and Cristiano Ronaldo (85) have more European goals (excl. qualifiers)

Betting

Juventus are Sky Bet's 11/8 favourites to win on the night and odds-on to reach the Champions League final, with Monaco 2/1 to establish a first-leg lead. Leonardo Jardim's side were 100/1 outsiders at the start of the season and are now 7/1 to lift the trophy, while Juve are 7/4 shots.

Falcao and Gonzalo Higuain share favouritism at 4/1 apiece in the first goalscorer betting, while quarter-final hero Paulo Dybala is 11/2 to net first and enhanced from 3/1 to 4/1 to net in an away win in Sky Bet's Price Boosts.

Giorgio Chiellini confirms the Champions League is Juventus’ “principal objective” but knows getting past Monaco won’t be easy.

The Bianconeri face the Ligue 1 side in the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday night, and the centre-back was asked about missing the 2015 final in an interview with France Football.

“The personal aspect is relatively unimportant for me,” Chiellini shrugged.

“Playing in matches like that is a huge pleasure for any player, but I put the team first. If we get past Monaco, I hope Juve will have a different ending than we did in Berlin [against Barcelona].

“The Champions League has been our principal objective since we started the season, we all know the place and the date.

“Before we think of the final though we have to concentrate on the two meetings with the Monégasques, two games which will be difficult to negotiate.

“When the draw was made, some said it would be easy - they don’t know football!

“I’ve been following Monaco’s results with interest since a few months ago. I’ve noticed that they haven’t let up, and are having an extraordinary season with crazy stats in Ligue 1 and a superb journey in Europe.

“Monaco finished top of their group, they played two great matches against [Manchester] City and they beat Borussia in Dortmund. Respect!

“I was interested in this team very early on, I was impressed by this crop of youngsters who have been exploding for two years.

“Some of them, like Bernardo Silva and Fabinho were there in our two matches against them [in 2015] and have reached a great level today.

“Then there’s [Thomas] Lemar, [Kylian] Mbappé, [Tiemoué] Bakayoko; players I’ve discovered this season and who are excellent.

“As for Falcao, before his injury in 2014 he was probably the best number 9 in the world. What he’s achieved this season in the League and the Champions League shows he’s getting back to being the Falcao who everyone admired.”

Charlie Nicholas provides us with his Champions League semi-final predictions, backing Atletico Madrid and Juventus to record positive results on the road.

Having played out two of the last three finals, Real and Atletico Madrid will meet in the opening semi-final, before the Vicente Calderon hosts a Madrid derby for the final time in the second leg.

Wednesday night sees Ligue 1 leaders Monaco host Serie A leaders Juventus, having both defied the odds to oust Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona respectively in the quarter-finals.

Here's what Charlie is predicting for the two ties...

Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

I'm still not convinced that Real Madrid are really clicking this year and there are still some issues, whereas Atletico are starting to pick up at the ideal time for this tie.

We all know about Antoine Griezmann but I'm also a fan of Kevin Gameiro, with his pace. Even though he has been in and out of the team, he got a couple of goals at the weekend.

Sergio Ramos ends up stealing the headlines, even more so than Cristiano Ronaldo at the moment. You look at his stats and he has 22 red cards in his career, 12 bookings this season, been involved in just three clean sheets this year, but has scored 10 goals. I've never been a fan but you could write one hell of a book on him.

All Ronaldo has is inside the box now and he won't get into the game so much. Karim Benzema's goals have dried up and Gareth Bale is out so it is going to be tough for them to break this very stubborn Atletico defence down.

Atletico will sit in and there won't be a dramatic charge, even if they go a goal down. They will go to agitate Real and turn this into a fist fight.

I'd be looking at Diego Simeone's side to leave with a decent result here and qualify in the return leg at the Vicente Calderon.

Charlie predicts: 1-1 and Gamiero to score first - 45/1 with Sky Bet

Monaco v Juventus (Wednesday, 7.45pm)

Juventus are rock solid defensively but also have high-quality attacking players. They have been my dark horses and I'd love to see them win it for Gianluigi Buffon, who has not won this competition. What an extraordinary player he has been.

Juventus will probably be well odds-on to qualify as they can defend like Altetico and have a nice balance going forward. Paulo Dybala is a proper little footballer, although he annoys me when he dives around.

Paulo Dybala scored twice against Barcelona
Paulo Dybala scored twice against Barcelona

We know about pace and talent in Monaco's side and everybody is talking about their young players, but they face a real test of their maturity here.

Juventus won't go there to open it up but I do expect goals with the way Monaco will approach the game and I could see that eagerness to attack backfiring.

Charlie predicts: 1-2 and Dybala to score first - 33/1 with Sky Bet

‘Juventus defence is collective’

Giorgio Chiellini insists it’s not just the ‘BBC’ which makes Juventus’ strong - “if we don’t concede many goals, it’s a collective success”.

The Bianconeri have played with both a back-three and a back-four this season, with Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli joining Chiello to make up the ‘BBC’.

“The number of goals conceded is relative,” Chiellini explained to France Football.

“Sometimes we’ve had luck. Against Lyon for example, we could have conceded one or two more goals. It comes down to a few centimetres.

“What’s certain is that Juve have managed to evolve in a very compact way, remaining very balanced and very solid.

“Obviously at the back we’ve been playing together for years, for our club and for the national team. There’s a symbiosis between us.

“It’s not just limited to two or three defenders and a goalkeeper though, there’s a symbiosis with the whole team.

“The efforts of each player makes it possible to reduce the gap between each position, to be more compact.

“We have crazy work rate on the flanks, both offensive and defensively, and midfielders who guarantee the balance of our team.

“If we don’t concede many goals, it’s a collective success.”

Chiellini is seen as a warrior on the pitch, is it a label he likes?

“It’s true that compared to some more technical players, who act on instinct, I’m less fluid, less ‘clean’.

“It’s also clear that I stand out more by winning challenges than I do in my overtures. The main thing though is what I bring to the team, my usefulness in the collective, more than any aesthetic considerations.

“Off the pitch I’m a quiet, calm, well-balanced person who hardly ever gets worked-up. On the pitch though I’ve always been a battler.

“Over time though I’ve sought to temper myself, to remain as calm as possible, to be less impetuous. If you can’t channel your energy you’ll commit mistakes.

“You need to find the right dosage to tame the ‘machine’ in all circumstances.

“I play because of a passion I feel very strongly every day. I work to improve myself every day that I go to the training ground.

“That means I also behave accordingly off the pitch, be that in terms of eating or sleeping. You can’t neglect anything.

“The more you advance, the more you approach things 360 degrees.”

Monaco midfielder Tiémoué Bakayoko is expected to be fit to face Juventus, despite breaking his nose on Saturday.

The Bianconeri face the Ligue 1 side in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, and it was thought Bakayoko may miss out.

However, L’Équipe reports today that he is back in training with a protective face mask, and will start on Wednesday ahead of Joao Moutinho.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder has made 42 appearances for the Monegasques this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

After scoring three goals in each of their four knockout stage matches, Monaco will fancy their chances as much as anyone of finding a way past a Juventus defence that has conceded just twice in 10 Champions League matches this season.

With 28 goals to his name in 29 fixtures for Leonardo Jardim’s men, Radamel Falcao is dabblebet’s 4/1 (5.00) favourite to open the scoring at the Stade Louis II on Wednesday, or 5/4 (2.25) to strike anytime.

However, as joint-top scorer in the knockout stages alongside Cristiano Ronaldo with five goals in four games, Kylian Mbappe looks like better value at 6/4 (2.50) to enhance his burgeoning reputation even further by finding the net for a fifth European game in succession.

Having found the net 13 times from midfield in all competitions, Thomas Lemar 13/5 (3.60) is also bound to pose a threat from a deeper role, while Fabinho’s responsibilities from the penalty spot make odds of 3/1 (4.00) seem rather generous on him adding to an impressive tally of 11 goals for the season so far.

At the other end of the pitch, Gonzalo Higuain is the Bianconeri’s 7/2 (4.50) favourite to break the deadlock with a crucial away goal, or 11/10 (2.10) to fire anytime.

GFX Monaco Juventus betting

However, while the Argentina international has only hit the back of the net twice in 24 knockout stage fixtures, compatriot Paulo Dybala has four to his name in just five and can be backed at 17/10 (2.70) to deliver the goods yet again here.

Having scored just eight times in all competitions from a new wide role, Mario Mandzukic is priced at 15/8 (2.88) to add to his impressive career total of 21 Champions League goals, while Miralem Pjanic is available at 12/5 (3.40) to get on the scoresheet for the first time since January.

Juventus have named their squad for tomorrow’s Champions League semi-final with Monaco.

The Bianconeri are heading to the principality this afternoon, ahead of tomorrow’s first leg at Stade Louis II.

Abidal: Monaco in better position than Juventus

ahead of Champions League semi-final

The Serie A champions are the favourites to reach the final in Cardiff, but

the ex-France international believes the lack of pressure helps Monaco.

Eric Abidal believes Monaco could have the edge over Juventus in their Champions League semi-final clash because of the absence of pressure on this season's surprise package.

Leonardo Jardim's men have seen off Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund on their way to the last four and are now just a two-legged tie against the Italian giants away from June's final in Cardiff.

Former Monaco defender Abidal thinks his former club, who have profited from five goals apiece from Kylian Mbappe and Radamel Falcao during this year's competition, could benefit from heading into Wednesday's home leg as underdogs.

"These will be two huge games," Abidal told Omnisport. "Juventus are the definite favourites as they have more experience in this competition.

"But at this stage of the competition it's better to be on Monaco's side, without pressure.

"They have approached this competition from the start with hard work, young players and a strategy. That's been their strength since the start of the season.

"They must approach these matches in the right way to take advantage of this moment and maybe cause a surprise."

Monaco are top of Ligue 1, sitting three points ahead of reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, while Juve are on course for a sixth straight Serie A title.

Juventus focusing on possession

Juventus have been focusing on possession drills ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League game with Monaco.

The Bianconeri face the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tomorrow, and travelled the three hours by coach earlier today.

According to TuttoJuve, training on Monday and Tuesday largely focused on possession exercises, perhaps giving an indication of Coach Max Allegri’s strategy for the match.

Given the pace and attacking prowess of the Monegasques, the Old Lady could look to take the sting out of the game by keeping the ball, then looking to grab a crucial away goal.

It’s expected that Allegri will make just one enforced change for tomorrow’s match, with Claudio Marchisio replacing the suspended Sami Khedira in central midfield.

That means Gianluigi Buffon will start behind Dani Alves, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini and Alex Sandro in a 4-2-3-1.

Up-front, Gonzalo Higuain will again lead the line, flanked by Paulo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado and Mario Mandzukic.

Buffon and Allegri will address the media at 17.45 UK time, with Monaco Coach Leandro Jardim speaking an hour later alongside Jemerson.

Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon calls Kylian Mbappé an “incredible talent” and wishes him a “stellar career”.

The Bianconeri take on Monaco tomorrow, and the Ligue 1 side boast a formidable attacking threat in the shape of Mbappé.

The 18-year-old has scored 24 goals in 38 games this season, as well as providing five assists.

“In 1998 I went to the World Cup in France, and he was born,” Buffon pointed out in an interview with SportMediaset.

“It’s beautiful and motivational to play against a future [Lionel] Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar… he’s an incredible talent, he’s a lad with his head screwed on and that will help him a lot.

“I wish him a stellar career.”

Most pundits have Juve as favourites for the Champions League tie, but Buffon will not be underestimating Monaco.

“After half an hour of the game they played against [Manchester] City I text my agent and said they could get to the final.

“They’re an exciting, physical team with quality.”

Strootman two-match diving ban

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman received a two-match Serie A ban for simulation against Lazio, meaning he’ll be suspended against Milan and Juventus.

The Dutch international won a penalty in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico, but multiple replays showed clearly that Wallace never made contact with Strootman’s ankle.

This evening the Disciplinary Commission found Strootman guilty of “serious unsporting behaviour” and given a two-match ban.

It could be particularly costly for Roma, because he will be suspended against Milan and Juventus.

Other players suspended for this week’s Serie A games are Davide Astori (Fiorentina), Fabio Depaoli (Chievo), Juraj Kucka (Milan), Sulley Ali Muntari (Pescara), Antonio Rudiger (Roma), Andrea Conti (Atalanta), Lorenzo Crisetig (Crotone), Diego Falcinelli (Crotone), Remo Freuler (Atalanta), Massimo Gobbi (Chievo), Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli), Diego Laxalt (Genoa), Jeison Murillo (Inter), Ilija Nestorovski (Palermo) and Marco Parolo (Lazio).

Buffon: 'No Champions obsession'

Gigi Buffon insists the Champions League is not “an obsession” in his career and Juventus have “total respect” for unpredictable Monaco.

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final kicks off at the Stade Louis II on Wednesday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

“If Juventus and Monaco reached this stage of the season, playing for a Champions League Final, they did it because they deserved to and have qualities that got them here,” said the captain in his Press conference.

“Therefore aside from the expectations and early season projects, I think it’ll be a balanced game between two very important teams who deservedly reached this stage and did so with a certain confidence.

“It’s qualification played over 180 minutes and that might suit us more. I also believe Monaco, being a young and vital team, will have the enthusiasm and healthy lack of cynicism that youth gives you – I too was a young player and know full well what it means to play in games where you feel unbeatable and indestructible.

“That is the danger, because we are facing a side that is not in the semi-final because of some fluke. They clearly and without doubt knocked out Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen, then Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.

“Two years ago we were probably tense because facing Barcelona in the Final, a team made up of those champions, is not relaxing. You can’t arrive to that in frivolous and joyful fashion, or it’d be an enormous advantage to the opposition.

“The approach to certain games is very personal. Whereas two years ago on the one hand we could be relaxed, as reaching the Final was unexpected, this time we can be more relaxed because overcoming this hurdle would be the almost logical conclusion to a journey we started years ago, taking us to sit at these levels with comfort.

“Unlike two years ago, Monaco are flying in Ligue 1 as well, so that brings more confidence and enthusiasm. Juventus never lacked for support from the local fans, even if we played in Tokyo, so there being many Italians in Monaco will I’m sure make the crowd as enthusiastic as ever.”

Buffon was asked if he expected a particular contribution from Gonzalo Higuain.

“If by contribution you mean decisive goals, we are happy whoever finds the net and makes our passage easier. Gonzalo didn’t score over two legs against Barcelona, but he helped us ensure that we didn’t concede – which really is thanks to the whole team, starting from the strikers.

“He also helped our moves work in a fluid manner by finding himself in the right position, contributing crucial assists or passes. I know everyone expects goals from him, but I hope he won’t lose that attitude he’s had with us this season, as with that attitude we can go further in the tournament.”

When Juventus faced Monaco two years ago, Kylian Mbappé wasn’t yet in the side.

“Monaco are a very attack-minded and fresh-faced side who are really strong going forward. You can tell their Coach teaches them a quality style of attacking play, but you can also do that with players who have technical qualities beyond the norm.

“Mbappé is the star of the team, the player who gets the headlines over the last six months, but along with him there are Radamel Falcao and other lads who are real dangers. I have total respect for Monaco, because I know that whatever happens tomorrow – unless there’s a two or three goal gap – their characteristics would leave the tie open for the second leg.

“They have this attitude that makes them unpredictable and that means you never know what could happen.

“I don’t think Monaco will change their approach. They came here with their characteristics and guarantees, so I imagine they’ll want to continue that philosophy. It’s a rewarding philosophy, as it has taken them at least to the Champions League semi-final.

“This Monaco plays total football, is a pleasure to watch and has caught the eye of many football experts. They are wonderful and I sincerely doubt they’ll step back from that approach just because they are in the semi-final and facing Juventus.

“I like what Falcao said, because at the end of the day this is a person who is grounded in reality, because for 90 per cent of players, you don’t get many chances after the age of 30 at a Champions League Final.

“However, all of us hold within us this hope that we can have another chance or opportunity to celebrate an achievement that was unheard of. This is the way of viewing things for a competitive athlete, who says things that are not presumptuous, but has belief in himself that can make people doubt their birth certificate.”

Buffon confessed he had pledged to retire if he kept two clean sheets against Barcelona. Was there another pledge for Monaco?

“I made the pledge before the first leg, so extra complicated. It’s a way of keeping ourselves young, of motivating yourself, but it’s also true that when I was younger, I’d make these bets with myself, that if someone scored from the edge of the box, I’d go to the HQ and tear up my contract!

“I had to motivate myself to shake things up and set little or big targets. The President was very good with this and he said nothing happens at Juventus without me knowing about it – many dumb things are said, let it go.”

Buffon has won everything in his career, except for the Champions League, despite losing a couple of Finals. What does it really mean to him?

“I understand it might be hard to believe, but for me playing a Champions League semi-final at my age is really something that stokes my enthusiasm and is not an obsession. It makes me happy and keeps me young, regardless of whether I win or not.

“I know that in these games, I’ll have the ability to express my essence – who I am and why I was born. This makes me very happy and gives strong sensations. It’s the taking part. My approach is very relaxed, positive and I don’t think I am owed anything. Absolutely not.

“If we win the Champions League, it won’t change anything. I have a contract to 2018 and still have targets through to 2018, whether I win the trophy or not.”

Tonight there is the Madrid derby – who is Buffon supporting?

“I will certainly watch it, as this is a game that needs to be seen, regardless of potential rivals. I am not cheering anyone on, as I am a disinterested party. Whoever wins, in case of a hypothetical final, would be a tough opponent to deal with.

“I like the solidity and unity of Atletico Madrid very much, but in the Champions League, Real Madrid have something special and always manage to overturn the odds or win games that were thought unthinkable. They were born under a luminous star. As I said before, that’s the kind of attitude you get from staying at a certain level for long periods.”

Max Allegri highlighted the importance of Radamel Falcao for Monaco, backed Gonzalo Higuain and warned Juventus to avoid repeating Bergamo errors.

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final kicks off at the Stade Louis II on Wednesday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Sami Khedira is suspended, so how will Juve change with Claudio Marchisio starting?

“The system doesn’t change. Khedira is a more physical player and Marchisio has more movement. Claudio is in good shape, has improved a lot over the last month and is an important player we have rediscovered,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Monaco play with great pace on vertical lines. They are very different to two seasons ago.”

Juventus have not conceded in the Champions League in 531 minutes of football, whereas Monaco found the net three times in each knockout game. What will give?

“Looking at the statistics, it’s easy to imagine a game in a certain way, but football is unpredictable. Monaco tend to score a lot in the final stages, so we need to have great respect for this team and get it into our heads that two legs have to be played to the best of our abilities, because this is very complicated.”

Roma are nine points behind Juventus now at the top of the Serie A table, does having the Scudetto in hand give more confidence?

“Naturally having a nine-point advantage with four games to go is good, but it changes nothing in our mentality or the way we are preparing this match. We have the same number of days to prepare for the Turin Derby, a match we absolutely want to win.”

Allegri’s Juventus knocked Monaco out of the Champions League two years ago. How have they changed since then?

“The statistics show Monaco have changed both in attack and defence. They tend to do much better in front of goal, whereas two years ago the characteristics of their players suggested much more solidity.

“Leonardo Jardim has done an extraordinary job. They are in the Champions League semi-final, ahead of PSG in Ligue 1, who were one of the big favourites to win the Champions League, so you can’t argue with that.

“Will I be the Juventus Coach next season? I will meet with the club later, but we don’t have the time right now, because we have other things to think about.”

Gonzalo Higuain has been decisive in Serie A this season, but not so much in the Champions League, despite the idea he was bought to truly challenge in Europe.

“Higuain was signed to improve the attacking potential of the squad. He is having a great campaign and scored many goals, but he’s not just valuable for his goals. He had a great game against Barcelona.

“If he scores tomorrow, you’ll probably start calling him ‘the Champions League man’, but the fact remains he’s having a wonderful season.”

Radamel Falcao is also spearheading the Monaco attack, not just 18-year-old talent Kylian Mbappe.

“Before the injury, Falcao was one of the best centre-forwards in the world. Now he is returning to an extraordinary and very dangerous striker.

“The numbers speak for Monaco. The forwards work well together, Falcao has experience and is a fox in the box, Mbappe has great pace and technique, loves running into space. The whole team has improved over two years.

“They also have very good midfielders and in defence. A team finds success if it is organised, but also has very good players.”

Allegri was asked what words of wisdom he’d have for the squad ahead of the semi-final tomorrow.

“In these games, the team knows what it should do and should not do. Tomorrow we must not play like we did in the first half against Atalanta, as that approach would cause huge problems against a side like Monaco with their characteristics.”

On Friday evening, Juventus drew 2-2 in Bergamo with Atalanta, conceding a last-gasp equaliser.

AS Monaco will look to continue their incredible 2016-17 campaign when they welcome Italian champions Juventus to Stade Louis II for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.

Monaco have lost their two previous Champions League knockout ties with Juventus, but the Ligue 1 leaders will be confident of progressing to the final after an impressive season to date.

Monaco have made the semi-finals of the European Cup for the fourth time this season, although it is their first appearance at this stage of the competition since the 2003-04 campaign, when they beat Chelsea 5-3 on aggregate.

A remarkable 2016-17 season has seen Leonardo Jardim's side rise to the top of Ligue 1, and they currently hold a three-point advantage over second-placed Paris Saint-Germain, still with a game in hand.

It is their performances in the Champions League that have brought the biggest interest, however, with the principality side expected to face a tough task to keep hold of a number of their first-team players in this summer's transfer window.

With that in mind, this might well be Monaco's best chance to land Europe's biggest prize for some time. The free-scoring outfit have netted in all but one of their 14 games in this season's competition, only drawing a blank when they lost 3-0 away to Bayer Leverkusen on matchday six in the group stage.

Jardim's side have also won six of their seven home games in the 2016-17 Champions League – managing 16 goals in those seven fixtures.

Their spot in the competition looked in doubt when they lost 5-3 at Manchester City in the first leg of their last-16 affair, but a 3-1 victory in the reverse saw the Ligue 1 outfit advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Monaco's last-eight tie with Borussia Dortmund was largely overshadowed by the terrorist attack on the Bundesliga side's bus, but two impressive performances from Jardim's side saw them advance 6-3 on aggregate.

Monaco's record in two-legged ties with Italian teams is won one and lost five, but they have only lost one of their six matches at home to Serie A opposition, and that came against Inter Milan in the 1963-64 European Champion Clubs' Cup.

Juventus, meanwhile, are in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the second time in the last three years. They overcame Real Madrid to reach the 2014-15 conclusion, but suffered a 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in the Berlin final.

Juventus are 32-time winners of Serie A, but they have only lifted the European Cup on two previous occasions. The first of those arrived in 1985, before beating Ajax in the 1996 final to triumph once again.

Domestic success has not been a problem for the Old Lady, and they are heading for a 33rd Italian title this season. The Champions League is the one that they really want, however, and many believe that this could be the season where Juventus land Europe's biggest prize.

Incredibly, the Italian giants have not conceded a single goal in the Champions League since a 3-1 win over Sevilla on November 22. They beat Porto 3-0 on aggregate in the round of 16, before recording a 3-0 aggregate success over Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Juventus are also unbeaten in their last six meetings with French opposition, with that run stretching back to the group stage of the 2009-10 Champions League, when they lost to Bordeaux. What's more, the Italians have won all 11 of their two-legged contests against Ligue 1 opposition.

Unbeaten in their last 22 European matches on home soil, Juventus will fancy their chances of making the final if they can pick up a positive result in the first leg. In addition to excellent home form, the Serie A outfit have won four and drawn one of their five away fixtures in this season's competition.

Eleven different players have found the target for Juventus in the Champions League this season, which is an indication of their strength all over the park. Gonzalo Higuain has missed some excellent chances in recent matches, but Paulo Dybala scored two brilliant goals against Barcelona in the last round.

Monaco will once again be without the services of first-choice right-back Djibril Sidibe, who has not featured since the start of April due to appendicitis.

As a result, experienced Moroccan Nabil Dirar is expected to start on the right of the home side's back four, with in-demand Frenchman Benjamin Mendy operating on the left.

Exciting teenager Kylian Mbappe will again be joined in the final third by Radamel Falcao, while Thomas Lemar and Bernardo Silva – another two that have been the subject of speculation in recent weeks – will start in the wide areas.

As for Juventus, head coach Massimiliano Allegri has no fresh injury concerns from Saturday's 2-2 draw with Atalanta, but Sami Khedira is suspended for the first leg, which could see Claudio Marchisio come into the XI.

A 4-2-3-1 formation will see Mario Mandzukic and Juan Cuadrado operate either side of Higuain and Dybala, while Miralem Pjanic is once again expected to get the nod in central midfield.

AS Monaco possible starting lineup:
Subasic; Dirar, Glik, Jemerson, Mendy; Lemar, Fabinho, Moutinho, Silva; Mbappe, Falcao

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Buffon; Alves, Bonucci, Chiellini, Sandro; Pjanic, Marchisio; Mandzukic, Dybala, Cuadrado; Higuain

Head To Head

Monaco and Juventus have previously met four times in the Champions League, with their two most recent fixtures occurring during the 2014-15 campaign.

Indeed, that particular two-legged affair took place in the quarter-finals of the competition, and it was Juventus that progressed to the final four courtesy of a 1-0 aggregate success.

The pair also met in the semi-finals of the 1997-98 Champions League, with Juventus triumphing 6-4 on aggregate despite losing the second leg 3-2 in Monaco.

We say: AS Monaco 1-1 Juventus

It is the free-flowing attack of Monaco against the defensive brilliance of Juventus. It is a difficult game to call due to the contrast in styles, but we are backing a low-scoring draw in the first leg, which would leave the tie delicately poised ahead of the return in Turin next week.

Gianluigi Buffon says playing in the Champions League makes him "feel young" ahead of Wednesday's semifinal meeting with Monaco -- but is wary of the challenge their in-form opponents will bring.

Buffon, 39, has won almost everything over the course of a career which has spanned two decades. He has lifted the World Cup, seven Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup but, despite playing in two finals, the Champions League is still missing from his collection.

He can move closer to completing the collection by beating the Ligue 1 leaders on their own patch, and he says he hopes to play in the competition many more times in the future.

"Playing in the Champions League makes me feel young, whether I win it or not," Buffon told a news conference. "I know that in games like this, I am able to show my real essence; probably what I was born for. It's a huge emotion and joy. I get so emotional for this, no matter whether I or we win this competition or not.

"So I don't think I am owed anything at all. If we are to win it, nothing would change because I have a contract until 2018 and I still have lots of objectives."

Buffon warned that Monaco's youth and energy will provide a stern test over the course of the tie.

"Tomorrow and over the two legs, experience of knowing that a place in the final is played for over 180 minutes could give us an advantage, but since they are young and show a lot of vitality when they play, I think that they have the enthusiasm that healthy youthful innocence brings," Buffon added.

"I know what it feels like when you play games as if you are unbeatable and indestructible and that is precisely how they are feeling now. Monaco are not in the semifinals by fluke. They have beaten big teams like [Manchester] City and [Borussia] Dortmund. They have great value.

"They are enthusiastic also because Monaco are flying in the league. Wins give you belief. They have a really good coach who has them playing attacking football, which you can do well when you have players who have extraordinary quality."

Buffon says they have much more depth than just two star names, Radamel Falcao and Kylian Mbappe.

"Monaco have scored bucketloads of goals, but Mbappe hasn't scored all of them," he said. "Falcao and the other lads are also true threats. I have total respect for Monaco because they are strong and their attitude makes them unpredictable."

But in an interview with SportMediaset, Buffon compared the 18-year-old Mbappe to some of the best players in the world.

"In 1998 I went to the World Cup in France, and he was born," Buffon joked. "It's beautiful and motivational to play against a future [Lionel] Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar... he's an incredible talent, he's a lad with his head screwed on and that will help him a lot. I wish him a stellar career."

Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri warned that Monaco must be taken seriously.

"They are in the semifinals of the Champions League and they are top of Ligue 1, ahead of Paris Saint-Germain," he said. "Let's not forget that Paris were considered as one of the favourites to win this competition, so I think that says it all."

Jemerson is confident Monaco have studied Juventus carefully and “won’t be surprised,” but it is their first knockout tie with the first leg at home.

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final kicks off at the Stade Louis II on Wednesday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Juve cancelled out the ‘MSN’ strike force of Barcelona, so how will their defence fare against Monaco?

“I don’t think we should consider Messi, Neymar and Suarez, but rather focus on our own style of football and winning the match,” he said in his Press conference.

“Radamel Falcao is a great player and a great man. Before I only knew him by name, now he is my teammate and he frightens the opposition defences. He is a very important figure for us on the pitch.

“We have talked about the Juventus players and I don’t think we’ll be surprised by anything. Monaco and Juventus were two very different teams when we last met two years ago. Tomorrow will be a very different game too.

“It’s a great pleasure to take on a team like Juventus and games of this kind really motivate players. We hope to do well and have the best possible performance.

This is the first time in the knockouts that Monaco have played the first leg at home. Are they aware of the importance of keeping a clean sheet here?

“Of course it’ll be a different approach, we’ll try to keep a clean sheet and be wary of Juve counter-attacks. Above all, it’s important for us to score.”

Monaco are top of Ligue 1 with a three-point advantage over Paris Saint-Germain. Does that further boost their confidence?

“It won’t be easy, it’s going to be very difficult. For now we want to focus on winning in the Champions League and will think about Ligue 1 later.”

Jardim: 'One Monaco-Juve ambition'

Monaco Coach Leonardo Jardim is concerned at the Juventus “winning mentality,” but “we have the same ambition, to play in the Champions League Final.”

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final kicks off at the Stade Louis II on Wednesday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

“Of course tomorrow will be important, but I think the tie will be decided in Turin,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Even if we concede at home, I am confident we’ll be able to score in Turin. We scored three past Dortmund, we scored against Tottenham, after all.

“Juventus have a great winning mentality, they are defensively strong, organised and good in attack too. They do well on set plays and corners. They are very dangerous with their experience and it’s difficult for us.

“The teams we played against, such as Dortmund and Manchester City, were less defensively-minded than Juventus. We need to be more careful on the transitions, on corners and set plays, but be very dangerous on the counter with pace, as that’s where we can hurt them.

“Juventus won’t think about our six goals against Dortmund, just as we aren’t thinking about their two clean sheets against Barcelona.

“We have the same ambition, which is to play in the Champions League Final. We’ll be at 100 per cent physically tomorrow and psychologically, as my players are ready to play the whole season to the limit.”

Juventus were built to win the Champions League, but what does this mean for Monaco to get this far?

“This semi-final is a big deal. It’s an adventure, it’s down to our daily work over the last 10 months. We played four games for the play-offs, starting in July, so we are now the team who have played the most matches in this Champions League – 16 games.

“I am optimistic. If the Coach isn’t the first person to be optimistic, then it’s not going to be passed down to the players. We have to make the most of our moment of form, rely on our organisation and focus only on those 180 minutes. What happens afterwards is irrelevant.”

Jardim has been linked to the Inter job, so when he does leave Monaco, would he like to follow in the footsteps of Jose Mourinho at San Siro or another Serie A club?

“Serie A is one of the top five European leagues. It’s of a high level, but for me and my future, right now the only important thing is the future of Monaco, the semi-final and the next Ligue 1 games. I am fully concentrated on that.”

Midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko is a risk for tomorrow’s match, as his nose was broken in training by teammate Kamil Glik.

“We’ll see tomorrow, he might need a new mask.”

AS Monaco and Juventus will look to get one foot into the Champions League final when the two sides face off in the semifinal first leg on Wednesday

The penultimate stage of the UEFA Champions League is underway and the second semifinal sees the most prolific team in Europe come up against the best defence in the continent to set up a tantalising contest as AS Monaco host Juventus at Stade Louis II on Wednesday.

Leonardo Jardim’s men progressed to the semifinals thanks to an impressive 6-3 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund in the Last 8 stage. The principality club come into this match on the back of a 3-1 win over Tolouse in Ligue 1 that got them a step closer to the title.

The visitors, meanwhile, qualified for the last 4 stage with a comfortable 3-0 aggregate win over the mighty Barcelona in the quarterfinals. However, they will be looking to get back to winning ways on Wednesday after they were held to a 2-2 draw at Atalanta on the weekend.

The two sides have met four times previously, with Juventus holding a slightly superior record over Monaco (W2 D1 L1). The Hard Tackle takes a closer look at Wednesday’s match as the French and Italian champions-elect face off against each other.

Team News & Tactics

AS Monaco

Leonardo Jardim does not have many injury concerns on his hands, but he will be without the services of two key first-team players on Wednesday, with Djibril Sidibe a certain absentee and Tiemoue Bakayoko a major doubt.

Right-back Sidibe has been out of action for nearly a month now due to appendicitis and no set date has been earmarked for his return. Meanwhile, Bakayoko is suffered a broken nose in a training ground incident involving teammate Kamil Glik and is unlikely to feature on Wednesday.

In Sidibe’s absence Nabil Dirar is expected to continue as right-back, with Glik and Andrea Raggi manning the heart of the Monaco defence. Benjamin Mendy is likely to return at the left side of defence, providing a timely boost to Jardim’s side.

Portuguese midfielder Joao Moutinho is likely to replace Bakayoko in the centre of the park, where he should have Fabinho for company. But the spotlight will be on the likes of Bernardo Silva, Thomas Lemar, Kylian Mbappe and Radamel Falcao, who will attempt to breach the meanest defence in Europe.

Possible Starting XI (4-4-2): Subasic; Dirar, Raggi, Glik, Mendy; Silva, Fabinho, Coutinho, Lemar; Falcao, Mbappe

5102076342304768.png

Juventus

Like his counterpart in the Monaco dugout, Massimiliano Allegri does not have many fitness issues to deal with either. But, he is missing three players due to injuries and suspension, with Marko Pjaca, Daniele Rugani and Sami Khedira missing out on Wednesday.

Croatian forward Pjaca is a long-term absentee, having sustained a cruciate ligament injury in March. He will not play any further part this season and is unlikely to regain fitness in time for the onset of next season.

Centre-back Rugani, meanwhile, sustained an injury to his knee last week and it is likely that his season has ended prematurely. However, his absence is unlikely to affect Allegri’s defensive plans for the trip to Monaco, with Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini set to be deployed as the centre-backs.

Meanwhile, German midfielder Khedira is suspended for a match and will only be able to play a part in the second leg. In his absence, veteran midfielder Claudio Marchisio should partner Bosnian playmaker Miralem Pjanic at the heart of the Juventus midfield.

Possible Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Buffon; Alves, Bonucci, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Pjanic, Marchisio; Cuadrado, Dybala, Mandzukic; Higuain

Key Stats

  • Juventus have won just once on their travels in their 11 European Cup semifinal appearances as compared to nine at home.
  • AS Monaco have reached the Champions League semifinals for the fourth time after 1993/94, 1997/98 and 2003/04. No other French side has qualified to this stage more than once.
  • AS Monaco have won 71% of their home games in the Champions League (22 out of 31). Only Real Madrid (76.5%), Barcelona (72.1%) and Bayern Munich (71.3%) have a better win ratio among clubs that have hosted at least 30 matches.
  • AS Monaco have lost all four European semifinals they have played against Italian opposition.
  • Only Robert Lewandowski (41), Lionel Messi (77) and Cristiano Ronaldo (85) have scored more goals than Radamel Falcao (39) in the Europa League and Champions League since the Colombian made his debut in 2009.

Player To Watch

Monaco have taken European football by storm this season with their exploits in Ligue 1 and Champions League. While it has been a complete team effort, a few players have surprised one and all with their performances.

One such player is Kylian Mbappe. All of 18, the French wonderkid has turned into a prolific forward and has the whole of Europe chasing after him after what has been a sensational breakthrough campaign.

The records he boasts of are exemplary, the most impressive of which is that he is the youngest player to reach 5 goals in Champions League knockout stages. He was one of the best performers for Monaco in the last two stages and he will need to be at his best yet again to make an impact against the best defence in Europe on Wednesday.

Prediction

AS Monaco 2-1 Juventus

This has become one of the most highly anticipated encounters in the Champions League in recent memory, bringing the most dangerous attack in Europe as well as the meanest defence in the continent together on the same pitch.

Monaco and Juventus are two sides that look destined to clinch the top flight titles in their respective leagues, and are thus looking to make it a season truly worth remembering by attempting to win the Champions League.

One side can get closer to realising that dream on Wednesday, while the other could be teetering on the brink of exit at the penultimate stage. Based on form and knockout records, Leonardo Jardim’s men hold a slim advantage ahead of the Bianconeri.

Juventus’ away record in the Champions League is quite dismal while Monaco are one of the strongest teams at home. So while it is set to be a closely contested affair at Stade Louis II on Wednesday, Monaco look the likeliest to get the win. The Hard Tackle predicts a 2-1 win for the Principality club.
