This is a very tense Derby d’Italia for the Old Lady, who host the team that ended their nine-year Scudetto reign with Antonio Conte, the man who started it a decade ago.

Andrea Pirlo was his midfielder at the time and many now believe he was rushed into becoming a coach too quickly, as Juve flounder in fifth place.

With a full squad to choose from, he changes again with Juan Cuadrado and Federico Chiesa out wide supporting Ronaldo and surprisingly Kulusevski rather than Paulo Dybala or Alvaro Morata. ...........

Juventus: Szczesny; Danilo, De Ligt, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Cuadrado, Bentancur, Rabiot, Chiesa; Kulusevski, Ronaldo

Juventus bench: Pinsoglio, Buffon, Arthur, Ramsey, Morata, Dybala, McKennie, Bonucci, Demiral, Bernardeschi, Felix Correia

Inter: Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, A Bastoni; Hakimi, Barella, Brozovic, Eriksen, Darmian; Lautaro Martinez, Lukaku

Inter bench: Padelli, Radu, Gagliardini, Vecino, Sensi, Ranocchia, Perisic, Young, D’Ambrosio, Pinamonti

Juan Cuadrado and VAR dominated the Derby d’Italia

Juan Cuadrado and VAR dominated the Derby d’Italia, as the Colombian scored two goals, but the referee managed to infuriate both teams with a red card each as Juventus beat Inter 3-2.

Antonio Conte returned to Turin with the Scudetto and the opportunity to knock the Old Lady out of contention for a top four finish, so was taking no chances with a full-strength side. Andrea Pirlo opted for Dejan Kulusevski in a more advanced role with Cristiano Ronaldo, supported by Federico Chiesa.

Juve had a huge chance in the opening 10 minutes when Federico Chiesa knocked back a cross for Kulusevski’s cushioned volley, but Milan Skriniar managed to clear off the line.

VAR called the referee to view a Matteo Darmian push on Giorgio Chiellini, awarding a penalty. Ronaldo saw his spot-kick parried by Samir Handanovic, but tapped in the rebound to put Juventus in front.

The pattern was repeated at the other end 10 minutes later when Matthijs de Ligt trod on the back of Lautaro Martinez’s foot. The referee viewed it on the monitor and again awarded a penalty, which Romelu Lukaku converted.

Federico Chiesa’s curler was deflected over by Milan Skriniar, but Juve restored their lead on the stroke of half-time when Juan Cuadrado’s scorcher took a big deflection off Christian Eriksen to wrong-foot Handanovic.

While Kulusevski was perhaps fortunate to avoid a second yellow, the referee did take a much harsher view on Rodrigo Bentancur for a second booking as he challenged Lukaku.

Moments later, Chiellini deflected a Nicolò Barella cross into his own net when tussling with Lukaku and the referee disallowed the goal. However, after viewing it on VAR, the official realised it was Chiellini hanging on to Lukaku, so the goal was given and the defender booked.

The drama still wasn’t over, as Cuadrado was then tripped by Ivan Perisic for a penalty, which the Colombian converted.

Marcelo Brozovic received his second yellow card for taking down Cuadrado on the counter, leaving Inter with 10 men too.

Juventus: Szczesny; Danilo, De Ligt, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Cuadrado, Bentancur, Rabiot, Chiesa (Demiral 70); Kulusevski (McKennie 57), Ronaldo (Morata 70)

Inter: Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, A Bastoni (Vecino 80); Hakimi, Barella, Brozovic, Eriksen (Sensi 73), Darmian (Perisic 46); Lautaro Martinez, Lukaku

Saved penalty: Ronaldo 24 (J)

Sent off: Bentancur 56 (J), Brozovic 91 (I)

Pirlo: 'Ronaldo happy to be subbed off'

1232910282.0.jpg

May 15, 2021

Andrea Pirlo reveals 'it was the first time Ronaldo was happy to be subbed off' and explains what Juventus have lacked this season.

The Old Lady leapfrogged Napoli in fourth place after a 3-2 win over Inter. Napoli sit two points behind the Bianconeri, but have a game in hand as they face Fiorentina away tomorrow.

"We should have had the same determination and desire to fight on every ball also in the other games of the season," Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

"If we had done so, we would not be fighting for a top-four finish at this point. We made too many mistakes in games that seemed easy on paper."

"We've asked ourselves many times what we've lacked this season. We didn't have the same fire burning inside. We had to turn the light on again to fight the title and a top-four finish. The lads have proved they are up to the task in big games," the coach added.

"This group has a lot to give, we have many young players, but playing for Juventus means having more responsibility. It takes time to adapt.

"We shouldn't have dropped so many points, but this is a good team, we have room for improvement, there is a good base to work well." .........................

Atalanta look to Ruslan Malinovskyi and Duvan Zapata in the Coppa Italia Final, while Juventus use Dejan Kulusevski with Cristiano Ronaldo and change again in defence.

Gian Piero Gasperini has taken Atalanta to their third consecutive Champions League qualification and is now aiming to give them a trophy, something this club hasn’t experienced since lifting the Coppa Italia in 1963. .........................

Juventus are missing suspended Alex Sandro and injured Leonardo Bonucci, so Danilo moves to left-back with Juan Cuadrado returning to defence.

Federico Chiesa and Weston McKennie take the wings, with Kulusevski and Ronaldo upfront, dropping Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata again.

It’ll probably be the final game Gigi Buffon plays in the Juventus jersey, but he could also match Roberto Mancini’s record of six Coppa Italia wins.

There will be 4,300 people allowed into the Mapei Stadium for the first time since the lockdown in March 2020.

Atalanta: Gollini; Toloi, Romero, Palomino; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Gosens; Pessina; Malinovskyi, Duvan Zapata

Atalanta bench: Rossi, Sportiello, Maehle, Sutalo, Lammers, Muriel, Caldara, Djimsiti, Ruggeri, Miranchuk, Ilicic, Pasalic

Juventus: Buffon; Cuadrado, De Ligt, Chiellini, Danilo; McKennie, Bentancur, Rabiot, Chiesa; Kulusevski, Ronaldo

Juventus bench: Szczesny, Pinsoglio, Arthur, Ramsey, Morata, Dybala, Bonucci, Demiral, Bernardeschi, Frabotta

Coppa Italia: Juventus end Atalanta dream

Dejan Kulusevski scored one and assisted the other for Federico Chiesa, as Juventus beat Atalanta 2-1 to win the Coppa Italia, despite the Ruslan Malinovskyi rocket.

La Dea were hoping to win their first trophy since 1963, having lost the Final to Lazio two years ago, while Juve wanted their 14th edition of the Coppa Italia. Alex Sandro was suspended and Leonardo Bonucci had a knee injury, but the big news was 4,300 fans were allowed into the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia, the most since the lockdown started in March 2020.

It was Juventus who took the lead against the run of play, as Juan Cuadrado went into a crunching tackle on Robin Gosens to interrupt a potential attack, sparking the counter and Weston McKennie rolled across for a fantastic Dejan Kulusevski left-foot curler into the far corner.

Atalanta did get their goal eventually, as Remo Freuler turned Rabiot in midfield to start the move, before Malinovskyi’s rocket into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.

Juve were far more aggressive in the second half, so Atalanta introduced Luis Muriel and Mario Pasalic. Just as Paulo Dybala was preparing to substitute Chiesa, the latter scored a goal to restore Juve’s lead.

Chiesa cut inside from the left, completed a rapid give-and-go with Kulusevski and swept it past Gollini with the inside of his left foot from eight yards.

Pirlo: 'I'd confirm myself at Juventus'

Immagine

May 19, 2021

Andrea Pirlo celebrated his birthday with the Coppa Italia trophy, explains how Juventus beat Atalanta and why he would ‘confirm’ himself on the bench.

The coach has come under fire, but in his debut season has won the Italian Supercoppa and the Coppa Italia, while still in the running for a top four Serie A finish.

This 2-1 Final victory over Atalanta arrived on his 42nd birthday, with Dejan Kulusevski and Federico Chiesa goals around the temporary Ruslan Malinovskyi equaliser.

“It was a wonderful game with two great teams who fought from start to finish. It was worthy of the Final and also for these wonderful fans, so we are happy we were able to give them a great night,” Pirlo told RAI Sport.

“We wanted to win, to bring home this trophy, despite it not being a positive season. We came back together, got it into our heads that this was an important objective. We beat great teams in the semi-final and Final, so Juventus deserved this trophy.”

When Chiesa scored the goal, Paulo Dybala was already standing on the touchline waiting to come on as his replacement.

“We were about to take him off when he scored, that’s football for you. Not everyone has scored a decisive goal in a Cup Final, so it’s great for him.” ..........................

Pirlo was asked if he would confirm himself as Juventus coach for next season.

“Of course I would confirm myself in this role. I’ve loved football since I was a child and will continue to love it. The club will decide, but I love coaching, I love this club, and we’ll see what is decided. I would like to continue.”

Pirlo has won the Coppa Italia as a player, so is it tougher as a coach?

“It’s more difficult as a coach than a player. Sometimes you call the players and they can’t hear you, or you can see things from the sidelines that they cannot in the game. I still feel like running on and playing!

“The lads have always been behind me 100 per cent and that’s very satisfying for a coach, no matter what the gossip says in the papers.”

Andrea Pirlo drops Cristiano Ronaldo to the Juventus bench, starting Paulo Dybala, Federico Chiesa, Dejan Kulusevski and Alvaro Morata, but know a win against Bologna might not be enough for the top four.

The Bianconeri need a victory here to have any chance of a Champions League spot, but if Milan and Napoli both win too, then the Old Lady cannot catch them.

Andrea Pirlo is feeling far more confident after a run of victories, including the contentious 3-2 against Inter and Wednesday’s 2-1 Coppa Italia Final triumph over Atalanta.

He had seemed to have found his shape at long last with Kulusevski partnering Ronaldo upfront and a 4-4-2 formation.

Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended and Aaron Ramsey injured, so Arthur was expected to step into midfield.

However, Ronaldo is sensationally dropped to the bench, in favour of what looks like a 4-2-3-1 with Chiesa, Dybala and Kulusevski supporting Morata. .....................

Bologna 1-4 Juventus, Bianconeri finish in the top four

Juventus beat Bologna 4-1 and qualify for the Champions League as Napoli were held to a 1-1 draw by Hellas Verona.

Andrea Pirlo surprisingly dropped Cristiano Ronaldo in the most decisive game of the season. The Portuguese striker was not injured but was snubbed due to technical reasons and because he felt tired.

The Old Lady needed a win at the Stadio Dall’Ara and hope Milan or Napoli didn't do the same.

Federico Chiesa broke the deadlock after just five minutes. Dejan Kulusevski picked the ball on the right and put it inside the box. Adrien Rabiot hit the crossbar and the former Fiorentina man steered it into an empty net.

Alvaro Morata doubled the Bianconeri’s lead and, just like, Chiesa, had just to put the ball inside an empty net.

The Spaniard’s goal game after a superb solo action by Paulo Dybala who dribbled past the defender and tried a lob shot that Morata helped in.

Kulusevski was once again pivotal to a Juventus’ goal as Rabiot made the most of his through ball to beat Skorupski at the far post.

Morata made it four shortly after with his shot that squirmed under Skorupski’s arm. It was also ruled out for offside, but the decision was overturned after a VAR check.

Juventus had more chances with Chiesa, Morata and Dybala, while Szczesny blocked a Vignato shot.

Juventus players on the bench stopped watching the game and just checked their mobiles instead.

Kulusevski had another goal disallowed as he was in an offside position in the build-up.

A Musa Barrow shot was parried by Carlo Pinsoglio while Dybala hit the post from a tight angle.

Juventus players remained on the pitch to watch the last two minutes of the Napoli game and celebrated all together after the final whistle
