Juventus 2-0 Roma: Old Lady leapfrog Giallorossi

Feb 6, 2021

Juventus did the bare minimum required for all three points, as a Cristiano Ronaldo strike and Roger Ibanez own goal allowed them to leapfrog Roma into third.

This was a head-to-head for third place, although the Bianconeri also have a game in hand. .............

The opening goal came largely out of nowhere, as Alex Sandro spun away from Bryan Cristante, Alvaro Morata laid it off to Cristiano Ronaldo, who inside the D had the time to stop the ball dead with the sole of his boot and place a snooker shot into the far bottom corner with his weaker left foot. It was the first goal he scored as a 36-year-old.

At the other end, Ronaldo nearly doubled his tally, as a strike took a big deflection off Marash Kumbulla to bounce off the underside of the bar and back out.

However, just as Juventus were under constant pressure, they doubled their lead out of nowhere. Dejan Kulusevski got down the right and tried to roll across for Ronaldo, but Roger Ibanez accidentally bundled it over the line first for an own goal.

There was concern for Juve in the final minutes when Leonardo Bonucci waved to the bench asking to be substituted.

Juventus: Szczesny; Danilo, Bonucci (De Ligt 86), Chiellini, Alex Sandro (Demiral 86); Chiesa (Bernardeschi 81), Arthur, Rabiot, McKennie (Cuadrado 65); Morata (Kulusevski 65), Ronaldo

Roma: Pau Lopez; Mancini, Ibanez, Kumbulla; Karsdorp (Bruno Peres 76), Villar (Diawara 62), Cristante (Perez 62), Veretout, Spinazzola; Mkhitaryan, Borja Mayoral (Dzeko 62)

Pirlo had planned defensive Juve

Feb 6, 2021

Andrea Pirlo insists Juventus always ‘prepared’ a defend and counter approach against Roma, and it paid off with a 2-0 victory. ‘We need different variations and alternatives.’

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a solo goal out of nowhere and Dejan Kulusevski’s pass was accidentally bundled into the net with Roger Ibanez.

Paulo Fonseca said that Roma had ‘forced’ Juve into a defensive position, but his Bianconeri counterpart assures it was part of the plan.

“We had prepared this type of match. We knew Roma play very good football, so we were prepared to sit back, defend and then go on the counter,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“Our preventative marking was good, this was the approach we wanted, because it wasn’t easy to go forward and be aggressive with Roma. ............

Juventus-Roma: player ratings

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor juventus roma 2-0 2021 cristiano ronaldo

Feb 6, 2021

Giorgio Chiellini outplayed Borja Mayoral and Edin Dzeko as Roma defenders put in a disappointing performance.

Juventus

Szczesny 6 - Roma dominated the possession, but the Poland international had a rather quiet night, except for a couple of well-executed pieces of build-up play.

Danilo 7 - Never exposed in one vs one situations.

Bonucci 7 - Formed the same old reliable defensive partnership with Chiellini and got the job done against Dzeko and Borja Mayoral (De Ligt 84 N/A)

Chiellini 8 - Another authoritative display, he imposed himself on Borja Mayoral. MOTM

Alex Sandro 7 - In constant motion up and down the left flank. Wasn't caught out positionally (Demiral 85 N/A)

McKennie 6 - Ran a lot, but his deliveries were quite sloppy. (Cuadrado 65 7 – Left out of the starting XI because tiredness, came in the second half and was immediately decisive for Juventus’ second goal.)

Arthur 7.5 - Juventus’ deep-lying playmaker. The Brazilian kept the ball well, his mobility helped open up passing angles in the middle of the pitch.

Rabiot 7 -Shielded the ball very well, had a 100% pass accuracy.

Chiesa 6.5 - Had defensive duties, therefore he was not the usual threat on the flank. (Bernardeschi 81 N/A)

Morata 6.5 – The Spaniard created some opportunities and assisted Ronaldo for the Old Lady’s opener. (Kulusevski 65 7 - His pass would have been an assist for Cristiano Ronaldo if it wasn’t for Ibanez, but he achieved his target anyway.)

Ronaldo 7.5 -Scored the opener with a stunning left-foot effort from the edge of the box. Came close to scoring the second, but hit the crossbar. Simply lethal.

Roma ...........

Juventus’ injury concerns ahead of Inter clash

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor arthur and morata

Feb 8, 2021

Leonardo Bonucci is expected to sit out Juventus’ Coppa Italia clash against Inter, with Alvaro Morata and Arthur who are also in doubt for the Allianz Stadium showdown.

Bonucci suffered a minor muscle injury against Roma earlier this week and although his physical conditions are not serious, he is expected to sit out the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final against Inter on Tuesday.

Although Paulo Dybala could return to the squad list and start on the bench, Andrea Pirlo could be forced to do without Alvaro Morata and Arthur. ..........

Andrea Pirlo announces Dejan Kulusevski will start against Inter and admits Juventus have learned from their defeats.

The Old Lady host Inter in the decider of the Coppa Italia semifinals tomorrow.

The won the first leg 2-1 in Milan last week.

“It’s the second round of an important meeting, we have a chance to go to the final, it’s a target we must reach at all costs,” Pirlo told Juventus TV.

“We must have the right approach, it starts from 0-0, this game will be like a final. We must be focused.”

Romalu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi were suspended last week, but are expected to start for the Nerazzurri.

“They are crucial for Inter, we know their characteristics well and we should be very concentrated,” Pirlo admitted.

Leonardo Bonucci could be rested against the Nerazzurri, with Arthur and Alvaro Morata who are also in serious doubt.

“Gigi Buffon and Dejan Kulusevski will start,” Pirlo revealed. ..........

Juventus continue with Cristiano Ronaldo and Dejan Kulusevski up front, whilst Christian Eriksen starts in the middle for Inter.

Andrea Pirlo has decided to pair Ronaldo with Kulusevski again, as Alvaro Morata is on the bench against the Nerazzurri tonight.

Federico Bernardeschi starts at left, with Juan Cuadrado at right, as the midfield is completed by Adrien Rabiot and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Leonardo Bonucci is out and Giorgio Chiellini has been placed on the bench, as Gianluigi Buffon sits behind Merih Demiral and Matthijs de Ligt in the heart of the defence. ..........

Both sides have many players on a yellow card, as Juventus arrive with 10 players risking to be disqualified for the Final of the Coppa Italia.

Goalless stalemate at the Allianz Stadium after a vibrant first half between Juventus and Inter in the decider of the Coppa Italia semi-final.

The Old Lady had won the reverse fixture in Milan 2-1 last week, therefore a draw or even a 1-0 defeat would be enough for the Old Lady to qualify for the final.

Andrea Pirlo rested Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, while Alvaro Morata started on the bench after contracting stomach flu and Arthur was ruled out with flu.

Alex Sandro picked up a yellow card for a foul on Achraf Hakimi and will miss the final if Juve qualify. ............

Cristiano Ronaldo had three opportunities too, but Stefan de Vrij and Matteo Darmian blocked one shot each and Samir Handanovic denied CR7 on his second attempt.

Juventus (4-4-2): Buffon; Danilo, Demiral, De Ligt, Alex Sandro; Cuadrado, Bentancur, Rabiot, Bernardeschi; Kulusevski, Ronaldo

Coppa Italia: Juventus qualify for the Final

Feb 9, 2021

Inter were unable to find a way through against a very-well organised Juventus side who earned the access to the Coppa Italia final after a 0-0 stalemate at the Allianz Stadium.

The Old Lady had won the reverse fixture in Milan 2-1 last week.

It was a vibrant first half since the very early stages even if both sides failed to produce goal scoring opportunities in the opening 15 minutes despite trying to press high up the pitch.

Alex Sandro picked up a yellow card for a foul on Achraf Hakimi and will miss the final.

Cristiano Ronaldo had three opportunities too, but Stefan de Vrij and Matteo Darmian blocked one shot each and Samir Handanovic denied CR7 on his second attempt.

The Portuguese had the best opportunities of the game, but failed to make the most of a McKennie through ball with Handanovic who saved at the near post. The goalkeeper once again denied CR7 after he had dribbled past Skriniar and Barella. .............

The Bianconeri will meet Atalanta or Napoli who meet tomorrow at the Gewiss Stadium after a 0-0 stalemate at the Stadio Maradona last week.

Juventus 0-0 Inter (2-1 on agg)

Juventus (4-4-2): Buffon; Danilo, Demiral, De Ligt, Alex Sandro; Cuadrado (Chiellini 82), Bentancur, Rabiot, Bernardeschi (McKennie 62); Kulusevski (Chiesa 86), Ronaldo

Inter (3-5-2): Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni (Kolarov 65); Hakimi, Barella, Brozovic, Eriksen (Sensi 65), Darmian (Perisic 58); Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez

Pirlo: 'I had planned to reach the Final'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor juventus inter coppa italia pirlo

Feb 9, 2021

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo doesn’t mind being compared to Max Allegri and said he ‘planned’ to reach the Coppa Italia Final.

The Old Lady are through to the Coppa Italia Final with a 0-0 draw against Inter in the second leg and thus qualified thanks to a 2-1 win in Milan last week.

Pirlo admitted he was hoping to reach the milestone in his first season at the helm.

“I hoped so, as a debutant it was my plan to win a Supercoppa, to reach the Final of the Coppa Italia and the last 16 of the Champions League,” he told Rai1 after the match.

“As a player it was easier, it ended after the game. As a coach, you have to think about the next game immediately, you have to think for 30 different heads.

“But we haven’t achieved anything yet, now we’ll rest and prepare for Saturday’s match.”

The defence did a great job to keep out Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez.

“I have always said that I’m lucky to have four very good centre-backs,” Pirlo continued. “They are adapting to our way of defending and are improving.

“Not only Giorgio’s [Chiellini] return, the others are doing very well and I’m happy about this.” ..........

Juve-Inter: Player ratings

Matthijs de Ligt and Merih Demiral nullified Romelu Lukaku and Christian Eriksen put in a disappointing performance in Turin, check out the player ratings from the Allianz Stadium.

The Old Lady are through to the Coppa Italia Final with a 2-1 win on aggregate over Inter, check out Football Italia’s player ratings after the 0-0 draw at the Allianz Stadium tonight.

Juventus:

Buffon 6 - Inter managed only three shots on target, the defenders blocked 10 shots.

Danilo 7 - The majority of Inter’s attacks focused down the opposite flank, he did his defensive work well.

Demiral 8 - Ensured Lautaro didn’t have an easy route to goal, blocked a few shots.

De Ligt 8 - Had a tough direct opponent in Romelu Lukaku, but was dominant.

Alex Sandro 6 - Often caught out of position in the first half, did slightly better in the second part of the game.

Cuadrado 7 - Pirlo advanced his position to provide more defensive cover and the Colombian got the job done matching quality and quantity. (Chiellini 81 N/A)

Bentancur 7 - Solid defensive performance.

Rabiot 7 - The Frenchman was alternated with Bentancur as Juventus’ deep-lying playmaker to start the attacking action, at times his tackles were a bit too soft.

Bernardeschi 5 - Fought hard on the left, but was unable to produce goal scoring opportunities. (McKennie 62 6.5 - Provided more defensive cover than Bernardeschi.)

Kulusevski 5.5 - Played too far away from Cristiano Ronaldo, was never dangerous, but provided balance. (Chiesa 87 N/A)

Ronaldo 7 – Had the best two chances of the game, but was denied by Handanovic.

Inter: ..........

Conte's star at Juventus Stadium remains

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor antonio conte calciatore juventus

Feb 11, 2021

Tuttosport reports Juventus President Andrea Agnelli will not remove Antonio Conte’s star at the Allianz Stadium, despite requests from fans.

The newspaper reveals some Bianconeri fans have asked to remove the star of the current Inter coach but the paton will reportedly not do it.

Conte is not part of the present Juventus and will probably not be part of the future of Agnelli's Old Lady, but the glorious past remains.

After the controversial clash between Angelli and Conte in the Coppa Italia this week, Tuttosport reveals that fans have asked for his star outside the Stadium to be removed.

But the merits of the former captain and coach outweigh the current conflict. The Scudetti, the Champions League trophy and the role as a leader has given Conte one of 50 stars that pave the walkway around the Juventus Stadium.

This is the first Serie A meeting between the clubs this season, because the October encounter was called off due to COVID cases.

Because of their decision not to travel to Turin, Napoli were initially docked a point and given an automatic 3-0 defeat, but that was overturned on appeal.

There is still no date for when that game will be rescheduled, but they did meet in the Supercoppa last month, Juventus winning 2-0.

....................

Juventus qualified for the Coppa Italia Final after the midweek 0-0 draw with Inter, having won the first leg, and their confidence is sky high, particularly in defence.

Paulo Dybala was joined by Aaron Ramsey and Arthur on the treatment table, so Federico Chiesa, Federico Bernardeschi, Morata and Ronaldo lead the way.

Giorgio Chiellini celebrates his 400th Serie A appearance and hopes Juve keep a fourth consecutive league clean sheet, but Leonardo Bonucci is not fully fit.

HT 1-0: Insigne breaks Juventus curse

Immagine

Feb 13, 2021

Lorenzo Insigne ended his Juventus penalty curse and scored his 100th goal for Napoli, giving them the half-time lead.

The Partenopei were decimated by injuries, missing Dries Mertens, Kalidou Koulibaly, Kostas Manolas, Diego Demme, Elseid Hysaj and Faouzi Ghoulam, then David Ospina pulled out in the warm-up. Paulo Dybala, Arthur and Aaron Ramsey were ruled out for the Bianconeri, who came here off three consecutive league clean sheets.

However, Chiellini made another error when jumping with his arm on Amir Rrahmani’s face and this time VAR did consider it a foul, as did the referee following his on-field review. Despite missing three previous penalties against Juventus, including one in the Supercoppa last month, Lorenzo Insigne still stepped up and buried it into the roof of the net. It was his 100th goal in the Napoli jersey and he dedicated it to his wife.

INSIGNE PENALTY ENOUGH TO SEE NAPOLI PAST JUVENTUS

Immagine

Feb 13, 2021

After a disappointing semi-final exit from the Coppa Italia in midweek, Napoli restored their pride on Saturday evening by defeating Juventus 1-0 in Serie A at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

A first-half penalty from Lorenzo Insigne was enough to edge the hosts past the Old Lady, as Giorgio Chiellini was the man who made the crucial error on his 400th top-flight appearance.

With the Bianconeri and Partenopei boasting the best defensive records in Serie A this term, conceding just 18 and 21 goals respectively ahead of the match, it was no surprise that goalscoring opportunities were hard to come by during the opening 30 minutes.

However, after Chiellini sent a flailing arm into the face of Amir Rrahmani as he challenged Wojciech Szczesny for a high ball, VAR was consulted and a penalty awarded. The Napoli defender’s screams no doubt helping to convince the referee of the severity of the act.

Although the postponement of their October encounter meant this was the first time the teams had faced each other in Serie A this season, Juventus had recently triumphed 2-0 in the Supercoppa Italia, when Insigne wasted the chance to equalise from the spot. ................

Pirlo: 'Napoli penalty was dubious'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor napoli juventus 1-0 2021 pirlo

Feb 13, 2021

Andrea Pirlo believes the penalty incident was ‘dubious’ after defeat to Napoli. ‘Some incidents are treated differently when against Juventus.’

The Bianconeri suffered their second Serie A defeat of 2021, after falling to Inter, it was another big game at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Lorenzo Insigne missed a penalty against Juve in the Supercoppa last month, but this time he converted into the roof of the net following Giorgio Chiellini’s flailing arm in Amir Rrahmani’s face.

“We never allowed a shot on goal, we lost due to a dubious incident, but it’s a pity we didn’t get the win. We put in the performance that we needed to, but not the result that we deserved,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We moved the ball around, but not quickly enough, so Napoli were able to get into position. In the second half we were more enterprising, created more chances, but didn’t get the goal.”

Pirlo was asked why he considered the penalty incident to be ‘dubious’ for Chiellini flailing an arm in the face of Rrahmani.

“If you give a penalty for that, then any contact will be punishable by a spot-kick. If that had been given for us, there would’ve been a lot of controversy and complaints, assuming it’d be given to us at all.

“I am just saying the incidents went that way today. It was a dubious penalty, a doubt over the double yellow card for Giovanni Di Lorenzo. Some incidents are treated differently when against Juventus, because everyone talks about us. Sometimes that tactic works, sometimes it doesn’t. Never mind. ................

JUVENTUS PLAYER RATINGS VS NAPOLI

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor napoli juventus 1-0 2021 chiesa

Feb 14, 2021

Juventus saw more time on the ball, but were not able to do much with it. The best chance of the first half, as far as the defending Serie A champions are concerned, fell to Federico Bernardeschi, but it was Napoli who ended up breaking the deadlock thanks to an error by Giorgio Chiellini.

Around the half-hour mark, the Juventus captain’s flailing arm caught Amir Rrahamani inside the box and while the penalty calls were initially denied, the referee pointed towards the spot after consulting with VAR. Lorenzo Insigne stepped up to take the spot-kick and made no error in converting it.

Wojciech Szczesny: 6/10

This was one of those evenings when Szczesny barely had anything to do, making just one save. Not to be blamed for the goal Juventus conceded after being helpless from the penalty. Completed 27 of the 29 passes he attempted, helping Juventus build play up from the back.

Juan Cuadrado: 6/10

A frustrating evening for Cuadrado. As always, he tried to make things happen and even delivered a key pass in the first half. However, he had to be substituted at half-time after he picked up an injury.

Matthijs de Ligt: 6/10

Not the best of displays by de Ligt, who endured some nervy moments at the heart of the Juventus defence. The Dutchman was not as disastrous in any given moment as Giorgio Chiellini, but he was not composed enough on the odd occasion. Having said that, he was imperious in the air, winning each of the aerial duels he contested.

Giorgio Chiellini: 4/10

An evening to forget for Chiellini. The Juventus captain nearly conceded a penalty for a handball earlier in the first half before actually giving one away when he caught Amir Rrahamani around the half-hour mark. Was solid for the most part thereafter, most notably denying Piotr Zielinski ahead of half-time, but the damage was already done.

Danilo: 6/10

Danilo started out as the left-back before moving to the right flank after Cuadrado was taken off. The Brazilian faced some nervy moments against the plucky Hirving Lozano, but also won 6 duels while completing 3 tackles and 2 interceptions. Did not make a great deal of impact going forward.

Federico Bernardeschi: 5/10

Bernardeschi saw the best chance of the first half fall his way from open play, but he could only fluff his lines. Played as many as 3 key passes, but his output in front of goal left a lot to be desired. Popped up on different areas of the pitch to make things happen, but it just did not click for him.

Rodrigo Bentancur: 5/10

Disappointing from Bentancur, who was too passive on the ball at times while also struggling to contain Insigne on the break. Lost each of the ground duels he contested, although he was solid in the air. Needs to do better on the ball, however.

Adrien Rabiot: 6/10

An outing of hits and misses for Rabiot. The Frenchman was more composed in the middle of the park than midfield partner Bentancur, completing 93 percent of the passes he completed while also winning 7 duels and making 4 successful tackles. However, he nodded the ball off target in two set-piece situations, something he will be disappointed by.

Federico Chiesa: 6/10

Such a frustrating evening for Chiesa. The Italian international was once again purposeful in his display and delivered a team-high 4 key passes. Also came close to finding the back of the net, but was denied superbly by Alex Meret on more than one occasion. Just one of those days.

Alvaro Morata: 5/10

A game to forget for Morata, who was set up on a couple of occasions by strike partner Cristiano Ronaldo as well as Weston McKennie. It just did not click for him, though. However, he did play 4 key passes in what was the only major positive for him in this game.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 6/10

Another one of those who were left frustrated on a number of occasions by Meret. While Ronaldo did not test the Napoli goalkeeper as well as he could have, a couple of stops were out from the top drawer. The chance early in the second half from point-blank range should have been converted, though, and he will be disappointed for shooting it straight at Meret.

SUBSTITUTES

Alex Sandro: 6/10 ........

Weston McKennie: 6/10 .........

Dejan Kulusevski: 6/10 .........

Danilo and Alex Sandro warn Juventus about Porto

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor danilo alex sandro porto

Feb 15, 2021

Juventus defenders Danilo and Alex Sandro believe their former club Porto are a tough team to face and warn the Old Lady about one specific player of the Portuguese side.

Both defenders played for Porto between 2012 and 2015, when Alex Sandro joined Juventus and Danilo moved to Real Madrid.

The Brazilians are close friends and gave an interview to UEFA.com ahead of the Old Lady’s trip to Portugal in Champions League this week.

“I think we really grew up at Porto, as players and as men,” Danilo said.

"I think that for culture and tradition, Porto are always a difficult team to face in this kind of games. When I played there, I remember my teammates and I were waiting for this kind of games with trepidation,” the former Manchester City defender continued.

“There was a special preparation for these games, so I expect a great challenge because I am sure that Sérgio [Conceição] will prepare the team to win and to move forward in the competition.”

Have they enjoyed watching Jesus Corona lately?

He is a top class footballer,” Alex Sandro claimed.

“But, as Danilo said, it’s Porto’s mentality that makes the difference. When we were there, we looked forward to these moments, especially in the Champions League, against the big clubs.

“Porto generally perform well at home against the big sides. Juventus, however, also know Porto well. I’m sure it won’t be easy, but we’re ready to go there and play a big game. ..........

Juventus look to Dejan Kulusevski and Federico Chiesa to support Cristiano Ronaldo in order to break down the rock-solid FC Porto defence.

The first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 tie kicks off at the Estadio do Dragao at 20.00 GMT.

Andrea Pirlo has to do without injured Leonardo Bonucci, Juan Cuadrado, Arthur Melo and Paulo Dybala, so former Porto full-backs Danilo and Alex Sandro both start in their old stadium.

Weston McKennie has shaken off a knock to start, with Chiesa taking the other wing, and Kulusevski gets the nod rather than Alvaro Morata to partner Ronaldo.

The FC Porto coach is former Lazio, Parma and Inter star Sergio Conceicao, so someone who knows Italian football very well indeed.

His team above all built their qualification on a great defence, keeping five consecutive clean sheets since the opening 3-1 group game defeat to Manchester City.

They haven’t conceded a single goal at the Estadio do Dragao in the Champions League so far this season. .....................

CL: Chiesa gives Juve hope with FC Porto

Immagine

Feb 17, 2021

Federico Chiesa’s late strike gave Juventus some hope after a dismal 2-1 defeat to FC Porto, conceding goals in the opening minute of each half.

The Bianconeri went into this game without Juan Cuadrado and Arthur Melo, while Paulo Dybala and Leonardo Bonucci weren’t fit either, so Alex Sandro and Danilo faced their former club with Dejan Kulusevski preferred to Alvaro Morata. Porto’s only absentee was Nanu and they reached the Round of 16 thanks to five consecutive Champions League clean sheets.

It was the worst possible start at the Estadio do Dragao, as Rodrigo Bentancur went to give a back-pass to Wojciech Szczesny, not realising Mehdi Taremi was right behind him to intercept and slide in from six yards barely a minute into the game.

Federico Chiesa’s volley was charged down by Zaidu, but the problems playing out from the back persisted, Szczesny giving it straight to Sergio Oliviera, whose shot was deflected by Matthijs de Ligt.

The night went from bad to worse, as Giorgio Chiellini went off with a calf problem after just 35 minutes, making way for Merih Demiral. ..........

Incredibly, Juve managed to concede a goal even earlier into the second half, as Wilson Manafá was allowed to run down the right and pull back for Moussa Marega, who fired past Szczesny at the near post when surrounded by defenders who didn’t close him down. It was only 19 seconds after the restart.

It should really have been 3-0, as Sergio Oliviera was allowed to run through the centre undisturbed and force a one-handed save from Szczesny. ...........

There was finally not just a real chance, but a goal, as Adrien Rabiot got down the left and pulled it back for Chiesa, who took it first time from 12 yards to steer into the corner. It was a precious away goal and the first time Porto have conceded at home in the Champions League this season, ending their run of five consecutive clean sheets in the competition overall. ............

There was more controversy in the final minute of stoppages when Ronaldo went down under a clumsy Zaidu challenge, but the referee waved away penalty appeals and VAR did not intervene.

Pirlo: 'Morata felt faint' after Porto defeat

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor porto juventus 2-1 pirlo

Feb 17, 2021

Andrea Pirlo reveals Alvaro Morata ‘felt faint’ after the 2-1 Champions League defeat to FC Porto and Juventus ‘handed the opening goal on a silver platter.’

This was arguably the worst Bianconeri performance of the season so far, showing a shameful lack of concentration when conceding a goal in the opening minute of each half.

The opener in particular was disappointing, as Rodrigo Bentancur’s awful back-pass was intercepted by Mehdi Taremi.

“When you concede a goal after one minute, a strange one at that, it’s natural the players will lose confidence, especially against a side that knows how to clam up in defence,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“Porto got the game immediately on the track they wanted. With such a packed fixture list, it’s normal you can’t always maintain absolute focus and the right tempo, but it shouldn’t have happened in the Round of 16 of the Champions League.”

Federico Chiesa gave them some hope with a late away goal, while Cristiano Ronaldo had penalty appeals rejected in stoppages for the Zaidu challenge.

To make matters worse, Danilo was booked and will be suspended for the second leg, while Giorgio Chiellini went off injured.

“Matthijs De Ligt fortunately just had cramp. Chiellini has a calf problem and Morata wasn’t in good shape before, then was sore at the end too, so we’ll see. Morata hasn’t been at his best since returning from a bout of flu. He was only playing tonight because we needed him.

“He felt ill in the locker room afterwards, he felt faint and needed a lie down, so he is not doing well.” ...........

Juventus are ‘annoyed’ by the perceived mistakes of Carlos Del Cerro Grande, the referee of their away clash at Porto in Champions League.

Cristiano Ronaldo was furious at the referee after his penalty appeals were rejected in the final moments of the Juventus defeat to FC Porto.

Several pundits and commentators, including Fabio Capello and Alessandro Del Piero on Sky Sport Italia believe Zaidu’s clumsy challenge was worthy of a penalty kick for the Old Lady.

According to Tuttosport, Juventus are “annoyed” by the refereeing of the Spanish match official and the penalty kick not awarded is just one of the controversial episodes contested by the Bianconeri. ...........

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey could start against Crotone even if Andrea Pirlo did also try Nicolò Fagioli in training.

With Arthur injured and Adrien Rabiot suspended, Pirlo has lack of options in the middle of the park.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Weston McKennie are set to start against the Serie A strugglers on Monday and either Fagioli or Ramsey could take a third spot in midfield.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the product of Juventus academy who made his senior debut in a Coppa Italia tie this past January, was tried among the starters in training by the Juventus coach, but Ramsey is the favourite to start. ...........

Pirlo: ‘I’m not worried, Ronaldo improving his free kicks’

Andrea Pirlo insists he is ‘not worried’ despite Juventus suffering two defeats in a row and claims Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘improving his free kicks.’

The Old Lady lost to Napoli and Porto and face Crotone at the Allianz Stadium tomorrow.

“It’s an important game to continue our path in the title race. It’s going to be a tough game because Crotone are not going through a good moment, but they play well,” the coach said at a press conference.

“They’ve kept their philosophy and they are trying to impose themselves in every game, they are showing interesting things.”

The former midfielder is dealing with many injured players.

“Dybala is not available yet. He still feels pain at his knee, unfortunately he is not improving. He still has problems, so we have to wait a little bit more. Ramsey is available and it’s good news.

“Bentancur is feeling better, he had a slight physical problem this week, but I think he will be available tomorrow.

“We miss Arthur, he is the only midfielder with different characteristics, but we have many options to replace him: Ramsey, Bentancur and Fagioli.

“They can adapt to our system, but they don’t have the same characteristics of Arthur. We’ll try to find the best solution tomorrow.”

“Arthur must be assessed day by day. He feels pain and for now he can’t play, there isn’t a recovery time settled, he can’t play until he feels pain. ...........

“He can be a director” What Pirlo thinks about Fagioli as he closes in on another start

Fagioli

Feb 21, 2021

Nicolò Fagioli has emerged as the next talent to come through the Juventus youth system into their first team.

The club handed him a first senior start in the Coppa Italia this season and he could be on from the start against Crotone on Monday evening.

This is because the Bianconeri are missing several midfielders, which means he is competing with Aaron Ramsey for a spot in Andrea Pirlo’s side. ...........

Pirlo can see some shades of himself in the midfielder and says his future will be creative midfielder because of his good vision.

Pirlo said, “He can be a director, like me he grew up as an attacking midfielder but he is more inclined to the construction of the game, not only in terms of characteristics but also physically.

“He is neither a midfielder nor a playmaker, he has a good vision of the game and technique”
