Juventus face more questions than answers as new season looms

Cristiano Giuntoli and Max Allegri have a lot of work to do in just a couple weeks.

Juventus v Real Madrid - Pre-Season Friendly

....... Right now, that doom is Juventus kicking off their campaign in under three weeks. Cristiano Giuntoli has stepped into a devastatingly difficult situation, and yet very little has been done to a roster still in need of deep fixing. The midfield has not been reinforced; players thought once not to be a part of the project remain on the squad; the fullback/wingback situation is the same — essentially, almost nothing has changed, even as the transfer window is coming to a close.

Considering everything transpiring off the field, a top-four finish feels imperative. Does this roster, with this coach, in this set of circumstances, against this competition, have enough to make that happen?

The fact that this is even a valid question shows how far Juventus have fallen in a very short period of time. ........

In Italy, Juventus were not anywhere near a title threat, although without the points deduction Max Allegri’s side would’ve secured a top-four finish. But to be so far away from title contention in Serie A, to watch Inter and Milan battle it out in the Champions League semifinals, to not even reach the final of the Coppa Italia on top of everything else — this was a reality far removed from nine consecutive titles. And the poor performance might not be half as bad as facing the reality that there’s very little hope for things to get much better in the immediate future. Allegri flatly stated that “talking about the Scudetto now makes no sense.” ........

None of us knows how many seasons of fandom we have left to follow this Old Lady. As we watch the Biaconeri flounder into a new campaign, you can pick your poison in terms of what upsets you most. The financial state is a wreck, the stature of the club has fallen and is actively falling — indeed, to call it a “freefall” might not be hyperbolic — the coach of the club has seemed out of ideas in a rapidly changing game, the roster is disjointed, there seems to be very little general direction, and on and on and on. Juventus have fallen behind in Italy; Italy has fallen behind in Europe; Europe is losing ground and players to Saudi Arabia. .......

Fino alla fine rings different this year. During the stretch of nine titles, fino alla fine was the war cry of an inevitably indomitable invading force on the peninsula. The Bianconeri were the domestic version of Hannibal’s Carthaginian forces come down through the Alps to terrorize the Romans. At home, nobody could stand up to the Biaconeri. Battling elsewhere in Europe, there was a palpable pride in the “dark horse” moniker.

If ever the word “fan” were put to the test for a follower of Juventus, that time is now. I honestly can’t wait for the season to begin, for my excitement seems to be correlated to the exact opposite direction of the club.

Vlahovic starts as Juventus fans send Lukaku message to Chelsea

11371655.jpg.webp

Dusan Vlahovic is in the starting XI for Juventus as they take on their Next Gen team in a traditional pre-season friendly, while fans mock Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku and warn against an exchange.

The Bianconeri have been in negotiations with Chelsea for weeks over a possible swap deal sending Vlahovic to Stamford Bridge in exchange for Lukaku plus a substantial cash sum.

They are discussing how much the additional money would be, with reports they could eventually agree on €30-35m.

Last night, Juve fans held up a banner mocking Lukaku and warning against the proposed move to Turin.

“Lukaku stay in Milan – we already have a second-choice goalkeeper.”

It was referring to the moment in the Champions League Final against Manchester City when Lukaku got in the way of Federico Dimarco’s shot and effectively cleared it off the line. .....

Moggi believes a lack of European football gives Juventus a Serie A advantage

moggi

Former Juventus executive Luciano Moggi has offered insights into the club’s prospects of making a notable impact in the league this season, considering their absence from European competition due to a ban accepted from UEFA.

Juventus opted to accept a fine and a subsequent ban imposed by UEFA for non-compliance with regulations. Consequently, the club’s participation will be confined to Italian Cup and domestic league matches, excluding them from European tournaments. .......

He said:

“Not having midweek commitments will make it easier for you to manage your forces , in a year in which I think Napoli will have difficulty to reconfirm because last year Saplletti, thanks to his experience at Zenit in Russia, was able to face a season interrupted by the World Cup in the best possible way, preparing the team in the best possible way in both phases of the championship”. .......

The Serie A season kicks off next weekend, so these were some of the final friendly matches of the summer.

Atalanta and Juve faced off on neutral turf in Cesena and Timothy Weah impressed with some strong runs down the wing, causing all sorts of problems for Mitchel Bakker.

New signings Gianluca Scamacca and El Bilal Toure came on for the second half and wasted some good scoring opportunities. ......

JUVE WRAP UP CLOSE-SEASON WITH ATALANTA DRAW

Juventus-Atalanta 0-0: segnali molto incoraggianti per Allegri

Juventus took to the field the last time before the Serie A campaign starts in a friendly against Atalanta in Cesena. The match finished goalless despite Juve looking the most dangerous of the two sides, especially in a sharp first-half performance.

In the second half, Massimiliano Allegri changed the entire team, allowing Luis Hasa to join the ranks of teenagers given a chance to shine on the big stage by the coach.

Summer arrivals Tim Weah and Andrea Cambiaso impressed in the opening 45 minutes against Atalanta, with the US international the player that came closest to putting his name on the scoresheet.

With most of Juve's build-up play coming down the left flank in Massimilano Allegri's 3-5-2 set-up, Weah added his support on eight minutes, letting fly from distance. His rasping shot brought out a smart save from Juan Musso. With 10 minutes remaining of the opening half, again Weah almost opened the scoring when he pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area after some excellent link-up play between Federico Chiesa and Adrien Rabiot. Musso dived at Weah's feet to parry the ball out for a corner. ........

Juventus 0 - Atalanta 0: Initial reaction and random observations

The last preseason friendly of the summer should leave you with some more encouraging feelings.

Juventus v Atalanta Bc - Pre-Season Friendly

There’s always a catch when it comes to preseason. If your team plays poorly, then you can just chalk it up to preseason, ball up all of those bad performances and punt them into oblivion because it’s come in friendlies that mean nothing. But if your team plays well, you sit there wondering if they can carry the good things they did into the games that matter.

After Juventus’ first-half performance in their scoreless draw with Atalanta on Saturday night, I can’t help but be a little more Door No. 2 than Door No. 1.

The second half proved to be what many friendlies turn out to be — a little disjointed and not all that great because there’s new players funneling in and out since the first whistle out of halftime. But it was that first half, though ... that first half in which Juventus didn’t look like a team that was just sitting back and happy to have 30-something percent possession of the ball. They were pressing Atalanta in a way that Atalanta has done to others over the years. They were using their speed and creativity on the flanks to create chances on the counter or simply in build-up play. .......

Ten of Juventus’ 15 shots in the game came during the opening 45 minutes. Dusan Vlahovic, seeing his first significant amount of minutes of the preseason, saw the bulk of those chances, but clearly showed signs of not much action before Saturday night. The good thing, though, is that even with all of 20 touches to his name, Vlahovic was being put in position by his teammates to do what he does best — score goals.

The biggest thing in that first-half performance was the movement that Juve showed. The combination of Federico Chiesa drifting out wide to the left like he is want to do and Andrea Cambiaso bombing forward proved fruitful. .......

It was encouraging. It was very encouraging. ......

A curious coincidence of Serie A calendar will see the 2023/24 championship begin in the exact way the previous one ended: with Juventus heading to face Udinese on the road.

It was an even and entertaining match, settled by a beautiful goal by Federico Chiesa.

The 3 most important players for Juventus in 2023-24

If Juventus want to get back on top, these three players will be crucial.

Juventus Training Session

Juventus v AC Milan - Pre-Season Friendly

Juventus v AC Milan - Serie A

.......

Bremer: thou shall not pass

Even if the aforementioned Bonucci remains on the Juventus roster, the dying days of BBC in Bianconeri colors are, officially, dead. The Brazilian trio that saw a lot of time together last year is once again touted as the solution this year, with Alex Sandro rejecting offers from Saudi Arabia and Juventus having no left-footed center back, so I imagine the back three — if the 3-5-2 that we assume is what Juventus will play is indeed what Juventus will play, which is probably not a very safe assumption knowing Max Allegri! — will be a lot of Danilo, Bremer, and Sandro ... or else Federico Gatti, Bremer, and Danilo. We know what we’re going to get from Danilo in both ethos and pitch performance, but Bremer, who did have some inconsistencies last year adapting to a new team, is going to be crucial. ......

Federico Chiesa: the heart and hopeful goal machine

If Danilo is the soul of this time, Chiesa is the heart. When Chiesa is healthy and playing and screaming and buzzing around the pitch and gesticulating his arms wildly, Juventus reach a different level of intensity. And let’s face it: “intense” is not a word we’d probably use to describe the Juventus of the last few years. Fino alla fine has felt a little weak, a little tepid, a little fearful, but if Freddy Church dons the shirt I don’t think there’s a problem with that, or at least much less of one. Chiesa, like Danilo, brings an intangible, metaphysical component to this squad that is sorely needed. .......

Adrien Rabiot: a little bit of everything the midfield lacks

Barring a very unforeseen transfer market move or an overnight recovery from Paul Pogba, the midfield is probably going to be another underwhelming unit for Juventus (the 362nd year in a row). Manuel Locatelli looks like he’ll be pressed into service once again as a holding midfielder, where he’s performed well some of the time and not so well at other times. Nobody apparently wants to buy Weston McKennie, so the American’s own inconsistent play will be back on the pitch at least until Nicolò Fagioli can return 100 percent and challenge him. As far as who slots in behind those guys, only time (and Allegri) will tell.

Which leaves Rabiot. The Frenchman with the flowing locks and the very involved mama.

I will never not be tickled by the reversal of this man’s reputation: for several seasons his most typifying trait was that no matter how well he played, he’d do at least one insanely bone-headed thing to wipe away everything good until that point. Last year? He was Mr. Consistent. And if it was only because the Frenchman was on an expiring contract, we’ve got the remake of the movie about to hit theaters. ......

Official: Juventus drop third kit for 2023-24

pogba-juventus-third-kit-2308.jpg

Juventus have dropped their third kit for the 2023-24 which will debut in the first Serie A game of the season against Udinese.

The Bianconeri launched their new third kit online Thursday morning. Coloured in grey, the it is a hommage to Turin’s industrial heritage but also ‘a nod to the long history of legendary Juventus goalkeepers’, from Dino Zoff to Gigi Buffon, who have often worn grey shirts through their years at the club. .......

Juve pummel Udinese to begin season with a convincing win

The Bianconeri ripped their opposition apart in one of the most convincing wins in a long time.

Udinese Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

That was not what I expected.

I was expecting the kind of grind that we’ve seen over the last two years. The heart-in-your-mouth-for-90-minutes type of game that we’ve basically been conditioned to expect over the last two years.

I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw instead. What we saw was a massive change from the passive Juventus teams that have been the hallmark of Massimiliano Allegri’s second tenure at the club.

Indeed, Juve pressed the crap out of Udinese for 45 minutes at the Dacia Arena on Sunday night, creating complete havoc for the hosts. They were in front before there were two minutes on the clock, and by the end of the half it was 3-0 — a scoreline that we barely ever saw over a full 90 a season ago. With the game safely put away, and likely in deference to the sweltering heat, the team went into cruise control in the second half. That led to Udinese getting a few more chances to score, but a combination of a defense that forced them into long-range shots, some bad finishing, and Wojciech Szczesny kept the clean sheet intact, and Juventus brought the 3-0 game home to start the season. ......

Juventus 3 - Udinese 0: Initial reaction and random observations

Well, that certainly is one way to start a season!

Udinese Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

We’ve been fooled by Juventus scoring extremely early goals before. Don’t deny it — you’ve fell for it plenty of times before. That thought of the dam about to break, only for that one goal being the only goal that Juve ends up scoring. It’s the ultimate tease, but you just can’t help yourself from going there.

Well, if you went there Sunday, it turned out to be something that was proved to be quite rewarding.

Juventus got its first goal against Udinese less than two minutes into the first game of the 2023-24 season. They didn’t sit back and defend a lead for 80-something minutes. Instead, with Udinese very much not knowing what the heck just hit them with Federico Chiesa’s opening goal in the second minute, Juve only added to their lead. By the time Adrien Rabiot headed home Andrea Cambiaso’s peach of a cross from the left wing, it was 3-0 right before the half and things were quite enjoyable heading into the break. That’s how it ended, as Juventus marked this season’s opener with an even bigger — and better? — 3-0 win than we saw from them a year ago when they opened their season in style.

It was a first-half showing that saw Juve play in a fashion that we saw maybe in small glimpses last season but never over an extended period of time. They were pressing the life out of Udinese, constantly putting a shook backline under pressure. They won the ball back quickly. They were direct on the counter and were dangerous in front of goal. It was an aggressive mindset that we haven’t always seen from Juventus the last couple of years.

Just like that, within 20 minutes, Juve were up 2-0 with both of their big-name attackers on the scoresheet and celebrating with the traveling fans behind the goal. .....

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Juventus finished with four shots on goal. Three of them were goals. I’d obviously like more shots on goal, but that success rate sure is a thing that Juventus are more than welcome to replicate going forward this season. ......
  • I gotta admit that seeing Chiesa buzzing around and popping up all over the place brought a smile to my face. This was Chiesa being the Chiesa of old and playing the kind of way that we know he can. It looks like the time off over the summer really did he some good to just reset mentally and focus on getting back to who he was before his knee injury. That finish on his goal was clinical, his combination with Cambiaso on Rabiot’s goal was nice as hell and just seeing him be a complete buzzsaw was the best of all. Let’s hope that he’s a man on a mission going forward because that would mean so much to this team.
  • I think it’s safe to say that was a pretty good debut from Andrea Cambiaso. The dynamic he brings to the left wing will be fun to see develop over the coming weeks if he has indeed surpassed Filip Kostic for that spot. Plus, you know, that cross he put in was dynamite and will be replayed more than a few times in this house. ......
  • Speaking of Vlahovic, seeing that link-up between Dusan and Samuel Iling-Junior was quite nice. It was just barely offside, sure, but it’s those kinds of things that give you hope that things can be different for Vlahovic this year with simply more creativity out wide. (Not that Kostic isn’t creative, but he is very much a predictable option in which he’s going to try and do.)
  • YILDIZ! YILDIZ! YILDIZ! YILDIZ!
  • Wojciech Szczesny made a great double save. The second shot was stopped with his face. Like, his WHOLE FACE. He stayed in the game. I really don’t know how he did that. .......

Allegri finds areas for improvement despite Juventus’ big 3-0 win at Udinese

Coach's comments as Juve cruise to a big opening day win on the road.

Udinese Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Early goals in a decisive first half made all the difference for Juventus as they cantered to a 3-0 lead away at Udinese, and then relied on goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to make some critical saves to preserve the clean sheet and secure the three points.

As expected though, coach Massimiliano Allegri maintained an even keel in his post-match comments, finding some issues in his side’s performance.

“There are two areas where we need to improve. In the second half, we needed to have more movement and controlling the ball, although admittedly it was very hot.

“The second is that when we make mistakes, we need to defend better in our own half. It’s one thing if you are leading 3-0, but otherwise you can make games more complicated than they need to be.”

It is rare Juve have looked threatening on the left over the last couple of years, but Andrea Cambiaso and Federico Chiesa worked well together in the win. Did Allegri feel Chiesa did well in the winger role?

“I think Chiesa is a striker. I might be wrong, but in my view he is a forward. He gets too isolated playing wide, so he did well partnering Vlahovic. They are improving, but Chiesa again went a bit too wide. I think Chiesa can score 14-16 goals this season and playing him wide is a little reductive.

On Cambiaso and his teammate on the other flank, Timothy Weah.

“Cambiaso is very intelligent and when you have a player like Chiesa who can roam around in all areas, Andrea knows when it is the moment to cover the space or find the gap. Without Chiesa, we need a more linear player at wing-back like Kostic.

“Timothy Weah needs time to adapt to Serie A, but I am happy with his performance, he just went off after a knock to the ankle.” ......

Dusan Vlahovic’s celebration after scoring the second goal of the game seemed particularly emphatic given that he has been linked with a move away.

“Vlahovic had a good game, he was coming off a period where he didn’t play as much. When we get him moving quickly as soon as we win back the ball, that’s where he can flourish. The difference must be when we are controlling the ball, so knowing how to lose his marker and find the spaces. That’s the difficult stuff and we’re working on it with him.” .......

What Juventus and Allegri changed in first Serie A game of the season

Federico-Chiesa-Juventus-celebrate-Udinese.jpg.webp

Juventus showed a different and more attacking attitude in their 3-0 win over Udinese on Sunday: so what has Massimiliano Allegri changed this season?

The Bianconeri started off the new campaign on the right foot with a comfortable win in Friuli. Allegri’s men were more attacking-minded and dominated the first half at the Dacia Arena scoring three goals in the opening 45 minutes.

Federico Chiesa opened the account at minute three and looked in scintillating form. The Italian played as a second striker, but often moved wide on the left flank allowing Andrea Cambiaso to cut inside from the same side. The ex-Bologna full-back was the only new face in Juventus’ starting XI compared to last season, alongside Timothy Weah, deployed on the opposite flank.

Juventus’ approach was different from minute one. The Bianconeri scored the first goal after recovering the ball in the opponents’ half, which was quite uncommon to see over the last two years under Allegri.

Fans and players, especially Chiesa, enjoyed the new approach. “It was a great performance and in the first half we were particularly intense, attacking them high up and that is what modern football is all about” .......

It was also proved by what Vlahovic told Chiesa after the Italian’s goal: “Don’t stop.’ Neither Chiesa nor his teammates did. Juventus’ new mentality has partially been inspired by Allegri’s new assistant Francesco Magnanelli who retired two years ago and joined the Bianconeri at the start of the season. The former Sassuolo midfielder was a player under Allegri at the beginning of his career at Sassuolo and also worked under Roberto De Zerbi, Maurizio Sarri and Stefano Pioli.

Magnanelli spoke about De Zerbi’s influence on his career in an exclusive interview with Football Italia in 2020.

Of course, some things still need to be fixed for the Old Lady. The second-half performance was quite similar to the ones of the past with the team sitting too deep and Wojciech Szczęsny often involved. However, the early signs were very promising especially because Allegri has put into practice some intriguing tactical changes. If the Bianconeri continue developing the new approach and keep Chiesa and Vlahovic fit, they can dream of ending their two-year title drought this term.

The Bianconeri have now won seven of their last eight opening-day fixtures, scoring three goals or more on five occasions. Ironically, the only exception was a 2-2 draw in Udine a couple of years ago.

Max Allegri has now reached a milestone, registering his 250th victory for Juventus in all competitions. He’s only the second manager to accomplish this feat since 1929/30. The legendary Giovanni Trapattoni is leading the charts with 319 wins.

On another note, Dusan Vlahovic scored a goal and delivered an assist in the same match for the first time since February 2023 against Salernitana. .....

Finally, Udinese have now become Federico Chiesa’s favorite target along with Milan and Bologna. The Italian has now contributed with six goals against the Zebrette: Three goals and as many assists.

Juventus vs Bologna: Serie A Preview, Potential Lineups & Prediction

Juventus_Bologna_Preview-900x400.jpg

Fresh off a phenomenal start to the 2023/24 Serie A season, Juventus entertain a morally-damaged Bologna at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday evening. Let’s take a look at our match preview for this lopsided fixture.  .....

However, Juventus thrived in the face of adversity on the opening weekend, putting three unanswered first-half goals past Udinese in a scintillating 3-0 win at the Dacia Arena. Federico Chiesa grabbed the headlines with a well-taken opening goal. Dusan Vlahovic was up there with a goal and an assist, inspiring Bianconeri to a morale-boosting victory. ......

Match Preview

Juventus

After celebrating his 250th win in charge of Juventus, Allegri returns to Turin in a buoyant mood. The Allianz Stadium was as closest to a fortress as it got last term. Only three sides boasted a superior home record than Bianconeri (W13, D3, L3) in 2022/23. It should put smiles back on the Turin faithful, as should Paul Pogba’s recovery from a long-term injury.

However, Juventus would be wise not to take anything for granted. They blew hot and cold across their last five competitive home outings down the final stretch of 2022/23 (W2, D1, L2). Allegri is a stranger to dropping points in back-to-back home games, but Milan’s 1-0 win here in late May puts him in a precarious position.

By contrast, Juventus have been nothing if not relentless against Bologna on home turf. They have clocked up an eye-catching nine wins and two draws in their last 11 league encounters in Turin since a 2-0 defeat in 2011. As such, the optimism in the home camp is not unfounded.

Player to Watch: Dusan Vlahovic

After getting off the mark from the spot against Udinese, Vlahovic will relish Bologna’s upcoming visit. The marquee goal-getter has netted five times against Rossoblu in Serie A, making them his second most-favorable opposition. ....

Team News

Long-term absentee Kaio Jorge is on the verge of recovery, but this clash will come too soon for him. Mattia De Sciglio will keep the Brazilian company on the stands due to a knee injury. Moise Kean is touch-and-go amid the uncertainty surrounding his future at Juventus. .....

Juventus vs Bologna Potential Starting Lineups

Juventus (3-5-2): Wojciech Szczesny; Danilo, Bremer, Alex Sandro; Timothy Weah, Adrien Rabiot, Manuel Locatelli, Andrea Cambiaso, Fabio Miretti; Federico Chiesa, Dusan Vlahovic.

Bologna (4-2-3-1): Lukasz Skorupski; Stefan Posch, Jhon Lukumi, Sam Beukema, Charalampos Charalampos; Nicolas Dominguez, Nikola Moro; Riccardo Orsolini, Dan Ndoye, Lewis Ferguson; Joshua Zirkzee.

Juventus vs Bologna Prediction

All signs are pointing to a clear-cut win for Juventus. Anything else would be a massive surprise.

Prediction: Juventus Win

Allegri could pick same Juventus XI for the first time

Kijk Juventus - Bologna Live Stream | DAZN BE

There are suggestions Max Allegri could break an extraordinary run by facing Bologna with the same Juventus XI that played in the previous match.

The game kicks off on Sunday at 17.30 UK time (16.30 GMT).

It is reported that the starting XI used for their 3-0 win away to Udinese last weekend could be replicated at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin.

That in itself doesn’t seem remotely unusual, until you look at the statistics from Allegri’s time at the helm.

Since his return to the club in the summer of 2021, Allegri has never picked the same line-up for two games on the bounce. .....

Juventus vs Bologna Preview: Probable Lineups, Prediction, Tactics, Team News & Key Stats

Juventus will aim to maintain their winning start to the Serie A season when they face Bologna, who come into this one in contrasting form.

bjU7BpdWkZ7fN5CBaQz9.png

Massimiliano Allegri entered the new season with renewed pressure on his shoulders after another summer of drama at Juventus, who face Bologna this weekend. With the team being stripped of their UEFA Europa Conference League place, the manager will lend his focus on domestic matters and will want a strong response from his side. ......

Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa, in particular, will have seen their task cut out as both scored against Udinese. Now, Allegri must keep up the mood within the camp and start churning out results consistently, starting with the game between Juventus and Bologna at the Allianz Stadium.

Bologna and manager Thiago Motta would not have wanted to enter this game in their current form. A terrible start to the domestic campaign saw this team concede defeat to AC Milan, who managed to score twice and take the game on its head. ......

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

Massimiliano Allegri has a near-fit squad, with Mattia De Sciglio the only absentee with a long-term injury. Even Paul Pogba has returned from injury without any further complications, with the midfielder likely to get a place on the bench against Bologna.

However, Allegri is unlikely to change the side that comfortably won against Udinese last time. Hence, there is a keen emphasis on Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic, as the manager will hope for a similar result.

Allegri will again place his trust in the midfield trio of Manuel Locatelli, Adrien Rabiot and Nicolo Fagioli. Timothy Weah and the in-demand Andrea Cambiaso will continue at wing-backs, while a well-marshalled backline of Danilo, Gleison Bremer and Alex Sandro will want to keep things quiet at the back.

In the attack, Dusan Vlahovic will continue to lead the line for Aleegri’s side alongside Chiesa. The pair combined to good effect last week against Udinese, and the manager will hope for a repeat of that performance while facing Bologna.

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Szczesny; Danilo, Bremer, Sandro; Weah, Fagioli, Locatelli, Rabiot; Cambiaso; Vlahovic, Chiesa

Bologna .....

Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Shorupski; Posch, Beukema, Lucumi, Lykogiannis; Moro, Dominguez; Orsolini, Ferguson, Aebischer; Zirkzee

QozmROYkzLbAB5ROuIRP.png

Key Stats

  • Juventus are undefeated in their last 24 matches against Bologna in all competitions.
  • Juventus have scored at least two goals in seven of their last eight home matches against Bologna in all competitions.
  • Bologna have conceded at least two goals in their last three matches in Serie A.
  • Bologna last won against Juventus in February 2011.
  • Bologna keeper Lukasz Skorupski could become the second Polish player to make 250 appearances in Serie A.

Player to Watch

Dusan Vlahovic

The situation with Vlahovic has been puzzling at best. The Serbian frontman had seen massive links with a move away from the club, and yet, Massimiliano Allegri, who did not fancy him, started him last week. That goal against Udinese will help the forward in a big way in reviving his career at the club. He will have a point to prove to those in charge of transfers and show he was not a bad investment. .....

Prediction

Juventus 2-1 Bologna

The Bianconeri may have started the season brightly. But they will remain wary of the challenge from Thiago Motta’s side ahead of the game. Bologna showcased their attacking superiority against AC Milan, but their inability to finish off chances cost them very much. .....

Juventus vs. Bologna match preview

Juventus has the chance to make it two wins to begin the 2023-24 season — something they couldn’t muster a year ago.

Bologna FC v Juventus - Serie A

It was about 12 months ago. Juventus opened the 2022-23 season with a very good performance over Sassuolo to give them a rather positive start to the new campaign. It provided some hope that maybe, just maybe, things were going to be a little different following a season in which a fourth-place finish and no trophies marked Max Allegri’s first season back in Turin.

A week later, I posed a very short yet very important question as Juventus prepared to take the field against Sampdoria at the Luigi Ferraris ...

“So ... what’s next?”

This is what proved to be next: Juventus’ second game of the season saw them play out a scoreless draw against a Sampdoria side that eventually got relegated and is now being coached by Andrea Pirlo in Serie B. I, personally, would not like to see a repeat of that — the scoreless draw part of it, of course, since Samp was such a disaster last season that relegation only seemed inevitable. ......

So, after Juventus again claimed a 3-0 win to open the season last weekend (although this time against Udinese), it’s time to figure out what’s next for Allegri’s squad that was one of the more impressive performers in Round 1 of the 2023-24 season. That will take place in Turin, with a sold-out Allianz Stadium ready to see what Juventus can do to follow up their bright start to the season when the aforementioned Thiago Motta and a wounded Bologna side come to town Sunday night.

It is that win over Udinese in which we saw a different Juventus from the one that was present for much of the 2022-23 season. For the first 45 minutes in which Juve built said 3-0 lead, they were aggressive, they were pressing (in a good way) and they were a team that looked to be brimming with confidence and one that wanted to prove a point. ......

TEAM NEWS

  • Something we have not been able to say very often: Juventus only has one player currently out injured, with Mattia De Sciglio out until the new year after major knee surgery.
  • Or that is what we thought until Max Allegri announced at his pre-match press conference that Wojciech Szczesny will miss Sunday’s home opener after picking up a knock in training.
  • That means after thinking pretty much thinking all week that Allegri was going to break his streak of not using the same starting lineup in back-to-back games since coming back to Juve in 2021 ... he’s about to use a different starting lineup against Bologna.
  • Allegri said that Moise Kean, who has been subject to rumors about his future at Juventus for more than a week now, “has never been out of the squad.” While admitting that Kean has been late to training once and has been dealing with a knock, Allegri said the 23-year-old striker will be available against Bologna.
  • Paul Pogba is “better” and “could be used” against Bologna, according to Allegri.
  • When it comes to his starting lineup, Allegri said he essentially has two decisions to make: “one in the middle and one out wide.”

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

There’s a few different ways we can go with this, but I think the pick is rather simple.

That’s mainly due to the fact that the star of last weekend is now the guy who will be lining up against his former club and suddenly with a whole lot more people interested in how he’s going to be playing.

Udinese Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

The following statement is true: Andrea Cambiaso had one heck of an official debut in a Juventus shirt last weekend.

The following statement is also true: Juventus are unbeaten in games that Cambiaso starts while wearing said Juventus shirt. ......

Three Bologna players that Juventus must look out for on Round 2

Orsolini

Last weekend, Juventus returned home with three points and as many goals in the bag following a prosperous venture in Udinese.

So on the back of a dazzling display in the opening round (at least in the first half), the Bianconeri faithful is seeking confirmation when the team hosts Bologna on Sunday for its maiden home fixture of the campaign.

With the exception of Mattia Perin who will replace the injured Wojciech Szczesny, Max Allegri should maintain the same formation. .....

So let’s take a closer look at three Rossoblu players who will try to cause havoc at the Allianz Stadium.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Left-Back)

With Andrea Cambiaso returning to Juventus, the Greek is now the undisputed first option at left-back for the Emilian side. .....

Lewis Ferguson (Attacking Midfielder)

Last season, Lewis Ferguson was one of the main stars of the show at the Renato Dall’Ara, sparking interest from several suitors between Italy and abroad. ...

Riccardo Orsolini (Right Winger)

For one reason or another, Riccardo Orsolini started last weekend’s match on the bench. Surely Motta will choose differently this time.

The 26-year-old is a familiar name for Juventus supporters, having been on the club’s books earlier in his career. .....

Juventus vs Bologna 1-1: Vlahovic Salvages Hard-Earned Draw for Bianconeri

Chelsea have halted the negotiation with Juventus concerning the swap between Romelu Lukaku and Dusan Vlahovic for the time being.

A resilient performance from Bologna held pre-match favorites Juventus to a dramatic 1-1 draw on Sunday evening. Despite taking the field as outsiders, the visitors put in a remarkable shift to take home a significant point.

Juventus surprised everyone on the opening weekend. Amid ominous-looking off-field turmoil, Massimiliano Allegri’s side thrashed Udinese 3-0 at the Dacia Arena. With enthusiasm at an all-time high following a morale-boosting performance in Udine, the Bianconeri fans filled the stands at the Allianz Stadium, hoping for another routine triumph.

However, following an underwhelming showing in a 2-0 home loss to Milan last week, Bologna came to Turin in a different mood. Thiago Motta’s side looked disciplined at the back, allowing very few sights of goal to clueless Juventus. But more importantly, they had clear ideas about how to hurt their hosts on the other side of the pitch.

Mattia Perin pulled off a decent save to thwart Dan Ndoye’s well-taken low effort from inside the box in the 23rd minute. Juventus didn’t receive the memo. Unaware of the danger, Allegri’s men collapsed moments later as Lewis Ferguson struck home to stun the Allianz crowd into silence and put Bologna in front.

Despite taking control of the ball possession, Juventus failed to invent anything meaningful in the final third. .......

The visitors had to learn that the hard way. Only seven minutes after the break, Gleison Bremer headed the ball down to Vlahovic, whose sublime half-volley found its way to the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Serbian striker, VAR cut his celebration short for offside. But Juventus changed their attitude after Allegri’s pep talk in the dressing room. ......

Juventus had the initiative but nothing to show for it. Allegri tried to reignite a comeback by introducing Paul Pogba midway through the second half. When it looked like the home side could be on the verge of restoring parity, Bologna hit on the counter, with Joshua Zirkzee forcing a top-class save from Perin. ......

Iling Junior lifted a perfect cross from the left flank, with Vlahovic finding the bottom corner with a towering header. It was his sixth Serie A goal against Bologna. But it was everything Juventus could rescue from this enthralling encounter. Allegri will have a week to rally his troops for the upcoming trip to Empoli.
