However, he was desperately unfortunate to slide the ball into his own net on a full-stretch attempt at a clearance. Dos Santos - A very strong game in defence, as he was always tight on the likes of Quagliarella, and made it difficult for Juve to get a sight on goal. Bostjan Cesar - Hardly put a foot wrong at the back, using his feet, head and anything else to prevent the ball from reaching its target in the box. Gennaro Sardo - Performed well on the right side of the hosts' defence, tracking Peluso well and showing a safety first approach. Boukary Dramé - Very aggressive on Isla out wide, and though he did see yellow for clipping the Juve man, his tenacity was a big reason that the visitors did not find much joy down that side of the pitch. Simone Bentivoglio - Kept his poise remarkably well to pounce on a poor Gianluigi Buffon clearance and slide a neat pass into Cyril Thereau for Chievo's first half opener. On the periphery of the game otherwise. Marcelo Estigarribia - Had one or two openings where he was able to put in a decent delivery on the left, but generally, it was a game of minimal impact from him. Luca Rigoni - Clogged up play effectively in the centre of the park, showing no hesitation to put a tackle in or sit deep to close off avenues at the top of the box. Alberto Paloschi - Mostly found it hard to manufacture space for himself, and even his attempts to drift wide usually went unheeded. Cyril Thereau - Slid home an excellent finish for Chievo's goal, and was very intelligent with his use of the ball throughout. Paul Pogba - Drifted out wide to great effect to put a few choice deliveries into the box, with two such balls setting up the events of both of his side's goals. A menace in the middle as well, breaking up play and driving Juve forward. Andrea Pirlo - Found it hard to prise open the opposition in the face of a determined rearguard effort from Chievo. Lost the ball once or twice under pressure in the second half as he began to tire. Claudio Marchisio - Had a solid defensive game throughout, but really started to contribute in an attacking sense in the second half, threatening regularly from the top of the box. Federico Peluso - Offered his side little in the way of enterprise or directness out wide, and as a result, Juve's penetration and general attacking threat suffered. Fernando Llorente - For a man of his stature and reputation, he was rather disappointing in the air, failing to get a good connection on the multiple headed chances that fell his way. Still finding his feet in Italian football. Fabio Quagliarella - More dynamic and hungry than his strike partner Fernando Llorente, but most of his endeavours led him down dead ends, as the defence was able to thwart him. However, his tenacity was rewarded with a goal on the rebound to bring Juve level at the start of the second half. Substitutions Stephan Lichtsteiner - Gave a more assured display on the right flank than Mauricio Isla, proving more careful on the ball. Inter, Copenhagen, Hellas Verona and now Chievo Verona -- all four of the Old Lady’s recent opponents scored the first goal. Thankfully, for the second time in four days against a Veronese side, Antonio Conte's men managed to collect maximum points in a 2-1 win over Chievo Wednesday to keep their place in the Serie A table. http://markting10.nl/ Much like Hellas Verona did Sunday, Chievo opted to change their formation to counteract Juve's strength in the middle. A side that has played a 4-4-2 in all their previous Serie A clashes this season, tonight they opted to bolster the defence by playing a dull 5-3-2. The result? As boring as one would expect. Giuseppe Sannino's men played deep with practically all their players behind the ball and congested the area so the Bianconeri could not weave their way through the middle. This not only stopped the forwards connecting, but it halted the midfielders from making timely runs into the box. The were simply no spaces between the lines, and the likes of Andrea Pirlo were marked closely to cut Juve's creativity at the source. The only space available to Conte’s men was in the wide areas. Unfortunately, there was little they could do with that option as most passes delivered into the box were poor, with very few reaching the intended recipient. Moreover, the Old Lady played without pace, allowing the Flying Donkeys all the time in the world to take up their positions and defend staunchly. Fernando Llorente was especially frustrated and did everything he could to impress his coach. He hustled, fouled, fell in the box but most importantly he fought, even if his efforts seemed a tad dramatic at times. As seems to happen with the Old Lady these days, they conceded from Chievo’s first venture into the opposite side of the pitch. Gianluigi Buffon, apparently capable of an odd moment of ineptitude, cleared poorly and gifted the opponents an attacking opportunity, which led to a Cyril Thereau goal. One shot, one goal -- the story of Juve's opponents so far this season. Hyperbolic statements aside, Juventus had to work hard for the victory. The second half saw a much more courageous Old Lady, who hastened her tempo and threw men forward to encourage an equaliser at the very least. Less than two minutes into the second half and their prayers were answered as Fabio Quagliarella grabbed the leveler. Whilst the change in tempo inspired a positive turn, what truly made the difference were Paul Pogba’s accurate deliveries into the box from the wide areas that he roamed into more and more. The youngster succeeded where the likes of Federico Peluso and Mauricio Isla failed. Pinpoint deliveries into the middle not only resulted in Quagliarella’s equaliser but in the own goal that won Juve the game. Sadly for Sannino’s men, Alberto Paloschi’s goal was wrongly ruled offside. Buffon had committed yet another monumental error and Paloschi exploited the opportunity to score from the rebound. The referee gave the goal but the linesman, according to Sannino, waved his flag and forced the ref to cancel it, as he duly did. The home side were understandably furious and they soon descended into aggressive play before they calmed their ways. Controversy is the media’s bread and butter and this incident will be discussed at great lengths with the likes of Calciomercato immediately publishing an online report with the headline surrounding the ‘Mystery of the cancelled goal’. Juventus, for their courage and the manner in which they controlled the ball when in the lead, deserved the win. They sped up the tempo and left themselves vulnerable when chasing the lead. When it was attained, they held on to the result with relative ease as they fought to secure the defence and maintain possession. Their maturity proved to be the difference in the end. Fabio Quagliarella dragged his colleagues back into the game after the break but an under-par Bianconeri side were generally short on ideas and were lucky that the hapless Bernardini gifted them all three points. Napoli were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom side Sassuolo, though, allowing Juve to take a share of second place while Roma moved two points clear at the top after beating Sampdoria 2-0. It was a slow start at the Bentegodi and it took 14 minutes for Alberto Paloschi to try his luck, only for Giorgio Chiellini to make the block. Fernando Llorente's sighter at the other end lacked accuracy but the build-up play was impressive and Juve came knocking again with Paul Pogba leaping at a Federico Peluso cross. The visitors continued to turn the screw, so it was a surprise when Chievo took the lead in the 28th minute. Gianluigi Buffon made a hash of a short pass out to his defence and Gennardo Sardo gratefully swept up the ball to give it to Thereau, who confidently whipped home on the half-volley. The Bianconeri would not suffer any further embarrassment before the break but they failed to make the most of several chances to equalise. Quagliarella's snapshot fell to Andrea Pirlo, whose follow-up effort went out for a corner and, two minutes before half-time, Llorente fluffed an easy header from a Mauricio Isla cross. Juve put their heads together over the interval and contrived to level the scores two minutes after the restart. Pogba was heavily involved in supplying Quagliarella for two shots against the flailing Puggioni. The Chievo goalkeeper moved quickly to save both, but could not keep a third out. Ten minutes later Chievo would find themselves behind when they could have been leading 2-1. Another mistake from Buffon when dealing with Simone Bentivoglio's shot saw Paloschi bundle over the line, but the offside flag denied him a goal. Chievo did not protest too much but they were enraged when Bernardini contrived to stub the ball past his own keeper under pressure from Llorente in the 65th minute. Conte knew his side had been poor and, in his search for a decisive third goal, he introduced the rested Tevez for the final throes. You know, the one where we're facepalming at some point in the first half because Juventus find themselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline. http://markting10.nl/ People will complain about the offside call that shouldn't have been an offside call and given Chievo a 2-1 lead. That will be the narrative most will go with because it's the easy one to lead with. And while everybody who roots against Juventus will be pointing to that moment and generating their best conspiracy theories as to why the goal wasn't a goal, I wanna put your attention to something else. It will be pretty easy to figure out, you guys. The fact was that Juventus were down 1-0 in the first half again. And the fact was that Juventus came back to win 2-1 — again. If there wasn't a Alessandro Bernardini own goal, it might have been a completely different discussion we're probably going having in the comment section. No "Three points, on to the next one!" or anything like that. There would have been some yelling, more than already is happening. But the fact still remains that Juventus fell behind again and then, no matter what happened with the stupid refereeing decisions occurred during the course of the second half, came back to win a fixture that has been quite a difficult one ever since Antonio Conte took over as manager. Conte knows that, and he knows that not every game is going to be a walk in the park because he's a smart fellow. Or I'll just let Fabio Quagliarella speak for me. He seems like a smart guy. Quagliarella: We can’t keep letting our opposition take the lead, even though up until now we’ve had the character to come back. Bingo. Well said. Random thoughts and observations •Wednesday's game was not Gigi Buffon's finest hour. His botched attempt of a clearance was the reason why Chievo scored their lone goal of the game. And then, to top it off, San Gigi's fumbled save allowed Alberto Paloschi to score but not actually score a second goal for Chievo. He looked like a keeper who had taken a couple months off, not given a simple rest over the weekend. They were both mistakes that should have never happened, especially for a player of Buffon's class. •Paul Pogba was Juventus' best wingback and delivered the best cross of anybody on Wednesday night. •That's not a good thing. Well, for the guys who are the actual wingbacks, that is. •Say what you want about Fabio Quagliarella, but in the past two midweek games, he's saved Juventus' backside. Chievo were fresh from defeating Udinese 2-1, their first win of the season, though Dario Dainelli and Perparim Hetemaj were unavailable, but Marcelo Estigarribia faced his old club. http://markting10.nl/ Juve have only ever lost here once, 1-0 in 2009-10, along with seven wins and three draws. It was a slow start in Verona with Paul Pogba having the first real chance on 20 minutes, his header off target from a Federico Peluso cross. Incredibly, Chievo took the lead, as Buffon’s poor clearance fell to Gennaro Sardo and his cross found Cyril Thereau’s volley. Fabio Quagliarella’s effort smacked Claiton in the face and as the move continued Andrea Pirlo’s follow-up was deflected over the bar. Quagliarella stung Cristian Puggioni’s palms from distance and Juve had penalty appeals for an Estigarribia handling offence, as he was scuffling with Pogba at the time. Llorente should’ve equalised before the break, but his header had no power behind it on Mauricio Isla’s cross. Quagliarella found a way through straight after the restart, though he his header was parried from point-blank range, then he hit the post before eventually bundling it over the line. Alberto Paloschi thought he had scored on 49 minutes when taking advantage of another Buffon error, but it was disallowed. The goalkeeper spilled Simone Bentivoglio’s attempt into the path of Paloschi, who tapped in when clearly not in an offside position. It was a bizarre decision that infuriated the home crowd. Puggioni beat away a Giorgio Chiellini screamer, but Chievo shot themselves in the foot when Bernardini dived on to a Pogba cross and accidentally deflected it into his own net. Giuseppe Sannino made four changes to the Chievo side that beat Udinese 2-1 at the weekend with Claiton, Simone Bentivoglio, Gennaro Sardo and Thereau all recalled to the starting XI. Juve boss Antonio Conte also made signifcant alterations to his team, with five switches from Sunday's 2-1 win over Chievo’s neighbours Hellas Verona, where they also fought back from a goal down. Gianluigi Buffon and Giorgio Chiellini returned in goal and defence, with Marco Storari, Leonardo Bonucci and Carlos Tevez among those to drop to the bench. After a cagey opening to the game, Juve began to look more threatening with Fernando Llorente, Quagliarella and Paul Pogba all firing over in the space of five minutes. But, despite those chances for the Turin-based outfit, it was the hosts who took the lead just before the half-hour mark. Buffon's poor clearance was brought down by Sardo, and his early pass was swept home first time by Thereau from just inside the area. The first half-chance of the match fell to the visiting side in the 20th minute when Paul Pogba got his head onto a cross but could not send his effort on goal.
