The Derby della Mole returned to Serie A for the first time since 2009 and it was the debut derby for the Juventus Stadium. The Bianconeri were feeling the pressure after their defeat to Milan cut their lead at the top of the table to just two points. Martin Caceres was injured and Giorgio Chiellini was a late addition to the absentee list with a calf problem that flared up again, so Juve changed to a 4-3-3. Arturo Vidal and Kwadwo Asamoah were rested ahead of the Shakhtar Donetsk visit. Torino had a full squad to choose from and opted for Alessio Cerci flanking Rolando Bianchi in a 4-2-4 system. Mario Alberto Santana fired straight into the arms of Gigi Buffon, but Riccardo Meggiorini went close when he trapped a long ball to go past Leonardo Bonucci and the flick over an on-rushing Buffon whistled just wide of the empty net. Mirko Vucinic got on the end of an Andrea Pirlo free kick, but the finish was deflected inches past the near post. There was controversy on 26 minutes when Jean-Francois Gillet spilled a Paolo De Ceglie cross under pressure from Paul Pogba and Angelo Ogbonna, but the referee awarded a foul on the goalkeeper. Replays suggest if anyone made contact with Gillet, it was his teammate Ogbonna. Belgian shot-stopper Gillet spilled another effort, a fierce long-range Pogba snapshot on the volley. The Torino goalkeeper did considerably better on a Pogba screamer from 20 metres, punching it out from under the crossbar. Rolando Bianchi wasted a counter-attack by trying to lob Buffon from midfield, missing the target. The game changed on 35 minutes when Torino defender Kamil Glik was shown a straight red card for going through Emanuele Giaccherini. It was a high sliding tackle with studs up on the standing ankle. It got even worse for Toro when Migjen Basha slipped and in doing so handled the ball to stop Pogba getting a shot away. However, Pirlo stepped up and surprisingly missed the penalty by firing well over the bar. It was a remarkable mistake from one of Italy’s most reliable set-piece specialists. Substitute Valerio Di Cesare, who had come on as a replacement for the red-carded Glik, got into a row with Sebastian Giovinco. Rivisto il fallo di Glick. É un miracolo che Giaccherini non si sia spezzato una gamba. Il difensore granata sarebbe da denunciare.
