Coppa Italia - Last of 8 - 9-1-2013 (8:45 p.m.) 2 - 1 Stephan El Shaarawy (6′) Sebastian Giovinco (13′) Mirko Vučinić (96′) Juventus Stadium - Torino Referee: Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni Conte: 'A great response' Jan 9, 2013 Antonio Conte insists he received “a great response from everyone” after Juventus fought back to eliminate Milan from the Coppa Italia. The Bianconeri went behind to an early Stephan El Shaarawy goal, but Sebastian Giovinco and Mirko Vucinic secured the 2-1 Quarter-Final victory in extra time. “It is always a tough game between these two great teams and clubs who have won so much,” Conte told RAI after the final whistle. “Our hunger was huge and I received a great response from everyone, especially as I included many players who hadn’t featured in a while. “I told them that what happened against Sampdoria must never happen again,” he added, referring to Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to 10-man Samp. “I compliment Marco Storari, as he played a great game in goal and I am very proud of him.” Juventus go on to face Lazio in the Coppa Italia Semi-Final.

The Rossoneri had taken the early lead in Turin through Stephan El Shaarawy, but Sebastian Giovinco and Mirko Vucinic turned it around for a 2-1 result in the Quarter-Final. “It was a balanced game and on the second goal we made a mistake in defence that allowed the counter-attack,” Allegri told RAI. “In any case, I am happy with the performance because we had several chances to equalise after Vucinic’s goal. “It’s a shame about the result, especially Marco Storari’s final save. We can improve, but also deserved more from this match.”

Coppa Italia - Last of 8 - 9-1-2013 (8:45 p.m.) 2 - 1 Stephan El Shaarawy (6′) Sebastian Giovinco (13′) Mirko Vučinić (96′) Juventus Stadium - Torino Referee: Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni Juventus responded as I had hoped, says Conte Juventus coach was impressed by the hunger of his players as they battled back from a goal down to win the tie, and reserved special praise for stand-in keeper Marco Storari. Jan 9, 2013 Antonio Conte praised the "great response" from his side after Juventus fought back to beat AC Milan 2-1 in the Coppa Italia quarter-final. Mirko Vucinic struck the winner in extra time after Sebastian Giovinco had levelled the match following Stephan El Shaarawy's early opener, and Conte was delighted that his charges were able to learn from their mistakes in their recent defeat to Sampdoria. “It is always a tough game between these two great teams and clubs who have won so much,” he told RAI after the match. “Our hunger was huge and I received a great response from everyone, especially as I included many players who hadn’t featured for a while. “I told them that what happened against Sampdoria must never happen again." The 43-year-old reserved special praise for Marco Storari, who made a handful of impressive saves on the night as he deputised for Gianluigi Buffon. “I compliment Marco Storari, as he played a great game in goal and I am very proud of him," he praised. Man of the moment, Vucinic, was understandably elated after firing his team into the next round and hailed the efforts of the whole squad on the back of a disappointing weekend. "All of us, all 13 or 14 players fought to win the game," the striker added. "We didn't play as well as we could against Sampdoria, but we are fully focused on achieving all of our objectives."
  4. Coppa Italia - Last of 8 - 9-1-2013 (8:45 p.m.) 2 - 1 Stephan El Shaarawy (6′) Sebastian Giovinco (13′) Mirko Vučinić (96′) Juventus Stadium - Torino Referee: Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni Player Ratings: Juventus 2-1 AC Milan (aet) Goal.com rates the men involved in a pulsating cup tie at Juventus Stadium, eventually won by the hosts thanks to Mirko Vucinic's strike in extra time. Jan 9, 2013 Juventus Marco Storari - Was caught wrong-footed by El Shaarawy's early strike, but was otherwise well guarded by the backline and was equal to anything Milan could muster from deep. Brilliant in extra time to protect a narrow lead. Martín Cáceres - Always attentive on the left hand side of the pitch, and impressive in shackling Emanuelson in an exemplary defensive performance. Andrea Barzagli - Was caught out by Boateng early on and was made to pay, but recovered to restrict Milan's movement in the area for the vast majority of the 90 minutes. Leonardo Bonucci - A typically understated yet commanding performance from the defender in the middle of the Old Lady back three. Very rarely caught out either on the ground or in the air. Stephan Lichtsteiner - Got forward efficiently and combined well with Giovinco, before suffering when the youngster was withdrawn. Taken off himself in the dying minutes of normal time. Mauricio Isla - Played a more central, withdrawn role than usual, supporting Lichtsteiner effectively on the right side and disrupting Milan's rhythm. Arturo Vidal - Harried, marked and hassled his midfield opponents to perfection, ensuring that Juve enjoyed a clear dominance in the centre of the pitch. Emanuele Giaccherini - Seemed unsure of his role in what appeared to be an attacking front three for the home side, drifting across the pitch while failing to make a telling impact - until his surging break decided proceedings. Luca Marrone - Was a late inclusion in place of Pirlo, and while he perhaps did not show the same fitness as the veteran master, was a constant presence in the middle of the park. Sebastian Giovinco - Involved in almost everything positive that emanated from the Juve attack. Just needed a little more precision in front of goal to add to his solitary strike. Alessandro Matri - Another deeply frustrating performance both for the forward and the home support. Gets into all the right positions, but the finishing was once again nowhere to be seen. Substitutions Paolo De Ceglie - Came in for Lichtsteiner and settled instantly into the match, providing a valuable set of fresh legs for the extra 30 minutes. Andrea Pirlo - Added an air of calm and finesse in possession after replacing Marrone. Mirko Vučinić - Put an indifferent cameo against Sampdoria at the weekend behind him with an instinctive finish that proved crucial in extra time. AC Milan Marco Amelia - Had little chance to stop a wonderful free kick from Giovinco, but came to Milan's rescue with a brilliant stop in an almost identical situation. Mattia De Sciglio - Held firm against a dynamic home attack, and was not overwhelmed dealing with the likes of Lichtsteiner and Vidal when play switched to his flank. Francesco Acerbi - Looked uncertain and unsure in the centre of defence. A wayward pass and tackle cost Milan an equaliser, and he was lucky not to be punished again by Giovinco after another mistake. Ignazio Abate - Looked dangerous when he broke down the right, but needed to play more conservatively in order to bolster a shaky backline. Philippe Mexes - Seemed more interested in riling the Juve ranks than in actually defending and was extremely lucky not to have received a red card in a bizarre first-half performance. Urby Emanuelson - Started brightly but faded out of the game and made little impact as Milan looked to reimpose themselves on the cup tie. Kevin-Prince Boateng - Stood out with one excellent break that led to El Shaarawy's opener. Defensively, however, he left much to be desired as Juve dominated in the middle. Massimo Ambrosini - Was overwhelmed in the opening stages of the match, but bounced back to prove a calming influence for Milan. Riccardo Montolivo - Battled in vain to overcome a mobile, tenacious Juve effort in the centre, which limited his opportunities to break forward and make a telling impact. Giampaolo Pazzini - Made a vital contribution early on with an intelligent stepover, but it was a rare moment of class in a display that too often lacked precision in the final third. Stephan El Shaarawy - Took his goal with customary class, and popped up across the field as he strived to be the driving force behind his side's attacking efforts. Substitutions Bakaye Traoré - Brought on at the end of the second half, and was badly caught out by a swift break that led to Vucinic's strike. L. Niang - The youngster showed glimpses of brilliance with the ball at his feet after coming off the bench. Bojan Krkic - Held the ball up well and looked assured, but was not given enough space in front of goal to make an impact.
  5. Coppa Italia - Last of 8 - 9-1-2013 (8:45 p.m.) 2 - 1 Stephan El Shaarawy (6′) Sebastian Giovinco (13′) Mirko Vučinić (96′) Juventus Stadium - Torino Referee: Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni Bianconeri advance after dramatic extra time Coppa Italia win Jan 9, 2013 Juventus defeated AC Milan 2-1 in extra time in a Coppa Italia quarterfinal encounter on Wednesday night at Juventus Stadium. The away side struck after only 6 minutes through Stephan El Shaarawy, but a Sebastian Giovinco free-kick drew the hosts even soon after. The match was level after 90 minutes, setting the table for a Mirko Vucinic winner in extra time. The first chance of the match fell to the visitors, as Marco Storari flew to fingertip away a swerving long range effort from Massimo Ambrosini on 3 minutes. A wonderful, flowing move by the Rossoneri saw them take the lead soon after. El Shaarawy smashed home first-time into the bottom left corner from the edge of the box, assisted by a deft backheel from Giampaolo Pazzini after some good work by Kevin-Prince Boateng on the left flank. Juventus came flying forward in response, but Alessandro Matri’s header went just wide from a Giovinco cross. The Bianconeri faithful would not have to wait long for the equalizer, however, as the Atomic Ant curled a fantastic free-kick past a rooted Marco Amelia from 25 yards out on 12 minutes to bring his side back on terms. Juventus Stadium exploded in outrage when Philippe Mexes put in a late challenge to upend the miniature Giovinco, a tackle for which the Frenchman was quickly shown a yellow card. Antonio showed his distaste by shouting momentarily from his technical area, but was calmed when Ambrosini and Ignazio Abate stepped in to offer their condolences. The Old Lady’s diminutive striker menaced once again from a free-kick on 25 minutes, but Amelia confidently punched clear from off his line to quell the danger. Yet again Giovinco presided over a set-piece mere minutes later after Boateng tripped up Emanuele Giaccherini on the counter attack, this time Amelia soaring to beat the former Parma man’s attempt away. Giovinco continued to be active, springing the offside trap to break away from Francesco Acerbi, yet went wide of the target when one-on-one with the keeper. El Shaarawy snuck in behind Barzagli to thieve the ball on a goal kick, but Leonardo Bonucci slid in to block the Italian’s shot away. Mexes was lucky to not to be sent off soon after as he clattered into Storari unnecessarily when the Juventus keeper ran off his line to resume play following a catch, escaping without further discipline. Giovinco claimed the first opportunity of the second half as the ball fell to his feet in the area only to fire straight at Amelia from a dangerous position just 10 yards out. Luca Marrone went for goal from miles out, whilst Boateng had his shot from 18 yards charged down after breaking free from his marker. Giovinco made way for Vucinic for the hosts, and Max Allegri opted to throw on M’Baye Niang and Bojan for Pazzini and Urby Emanuelson. Minutes later, bearded Andrea Pirlo entered the fray in place of Marrone following a crucial defensive intervention by El Shaarawy on Vucinic. On 87 minutes, Milan nearly found the winner as Niang got his head to a De Sciglio cross, but the 18 year-old’s effort whizzed past the post. Bakaye Traore replaced Ambrosini in extra time for the Diavolo, as the veteran midfielder had been suffering from muscle cramps for some time. Paolo De Ceglie was introduced for Stephan Lichtsteiner for the home side. Bonucci felled Bojan at the edge of the penalty area as the clock approached full time to set up a last-gasp chance at a winner, but Montolivo could only blast into the wall from the ensuing free-kick, setting up an extra 30 minutes of action to decide the tie. Only 5 minutes into extra time, Juventus found the second goal. Giaccherini burst forward on the counter, feeding De Ceglie for the Italian to lay on for Vucinic to poke past the onrushing Amelia. Milan pressed in hopes of mustering a response, but were unable to find an opening for the remainder of the first extra period. The Rossoneri came out fighting when play resumed, but Storari was able to keep out long-range efforts from Montolivo and El Shaarawy in the 105th minute. Niang did well to latch onto an incisive Montolivo through ball and beat a defender to find shooting space, but agonizingly hit a week effort directly at a relieved Storari. Mauricio Isla could’ve added another for Juventus on the break after some nice work by Vucinic, but Amelia denied the Chilean at point-blank range. Niang came close once more on the volley, but the youngster’s strike cannoned off of Storari in the centre of goal to maintain the Bianconeri lead. Milan were ultimately unable to equalize, leaving Juventus to advance to the semifinals of the Coppa Italia with the victory.
  6. Coppa Italia - Last of 8 - 9-1-2013 (8:45 p.m.) 2 - 1 Stephan El Shaarawy (6′) Sebastian Giovinco (13′) Mirko Vučinić (96′) Juventus Stadium - Torino Referee: Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni Coppa Italia: Juve beat Milan in extra time Juventus will face Lazio in the Coppa Italia Semi-Final after Mirko Vucinic secured a 2-1 victory over Milan in extra time. Jan 9, 2013 There was a last-minute change to the line-ups, as Andrea Pirlo was rested in favour of Under-21 international Luca Marrone. Claudio Marchisio, Simone Pepe, Giorgio Chiellini, Nicklas Bendtner and the suspended Fabio Quagliarella missed out. Milan used Urby Emanuelson in a trident attack and were without Robinho, Christian Abbiati, Djamel Mesbah, Mario Yepes, Kevin Constant, Daniele Bonera, Cristian Zapata, Sulley Muntari and Nigel De Jong. The first chance arrived after three minutes, as Marco Storari fingertipped a Massimo Ambrosini strike out from under the bar. They had the more aggressive start and took the lead moments later. Giampaolo Pazzini’s dummy let a Kevin-Prince Boateng pull-back from the by-line through for Stephan El Shaarawy to fire into the near bottom corner from the edge of the box. Juve went very close to an equaliser, as Alessandro Matri’s header whistled just wide with Marco Amelia rooted to the spot. Sebastian Giovinco did draw the Bianconeri level when he curled a trademark free kick over the wall and into the near top corner, leaving the goalkeeper no chance. Philippe Mexes was perhaps fortunate to only get a yellow card for his extremely late, high and cynical challenge on Giovinco on the touchline. Antonio Conte was absolutely furious and had to be calmed down. A long-range Arturo Vidal effort was accidentally charged down by teammate Matri. Boateng was booked for tripping Emanuele Giaccherini from behind to stop a counter-attack and Amelia fingertipped the resulting Giovinco free kick out from under the bar. Giovinco should’ve made it 2-1 when he took advantage of Francesco Acerbi’s defensive error to go clear, but blasted wide with only Amelia to beat. Leonardo Bonucci threw himself at the feet of El Shaarawy to block after Storari’s misplaced clearance. From that corner, Storari grabbed the ball and was then barged over by Mexes, who ran a huge risk of a second yellow card. Giovinco wasted another chance after the restart when he hit a weak shot at Amelia after a lucky ricochet set him up. Storari also smothered a Boateng solo effort, and Amelia intercepted a Stephan Lichtsteiner pull-back in the six-yard box. Lichtsteiner was clear on goal and lining up his shot when El Shaarawy sprinted back to defend with a crucial tackle. Pirlo was introduced for the final stages, but M’Baye Niang went close as he rose to nod a Mattia De Sciglio cross just wide of the far post. Giaccherini’s shot was deflected off target and Massimo Ambrosini went off with cramp. In stoppages Leonardo Bonucci tripped Bojan for a free kick in the D, but it was touched on for Riccardo Montolivo and charged down, so this Quarter-Final went to extra time. Juventus took the lead for the first time of the evening with a classic counter-attack. Vucinic allowed a Giaccherini through ball to reach Paolo De Ceglie and the pass back was prodded past the on-rushing Amelia by the Montenegro international. Storari parried a Montolivo snapshot, then blocked El Shaarawy’s follow-up. Amelia also had to be alert, smothering at the feet of Giaccherini after trapping a cross-field De Ceglie pass. Niang sprinted past Andrea Barzagli, but his finish was a weak effort into the arms of Storari. Juve also wasted a golden opportunity, as Vucinic drew two defenders away and rolled into the centre for an unmarked Mauricio Isla, but Amelia performed a crucial one-handed save. At the 118th minute Niang hit a volley sweetly, but central and it smacked Storari in the chest without the Juve goalkeeper seeming to know much about it. Moments later Storari was at full stretch to deny another Niang angled drive, then Martin Caceres charged down El Shaarawy’s follow-up. 7. Coppa Italia - Last of 8 - 9-1-2013 (8:45 p.m.) 2 - 1 Stephan El Shaarawy (6′) Sebastian Giovinco (13′) Mirko Vučinić (96′) Juventus Stadium - Torino Referee: Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni Juventus 2-1 AC Milan (aet): Vucinic the hero as Old Lady edge through to Coppa Italia semi-final The Serie A champions needed extra time to overcome their rivals, but sealed a comeback victory to advance into the last-four of the competition. Jan 9, 2013 Juventus emerged the victors after 120 minutes of hard-fought football in front of their own fans, as they squeezed past AC Milan 2-1 in Wednesday's Coppa Italia quarter-final. The Bianconeri fell behind to Stephan El Shaarawy's early strike, but levelled through Sebastian Giovinco before Mirko Vucinic sent the game in extra time. The crowd at Juventus Stadium was treated to a frenetic start to the quarter-final clash, as both teams pushed forward in search of an early opener. Massimo Ambrosini was the first man to take aim at goal, his early snapshot pushed over the bar by Marco Storari with barely two minutes on the clock. It was a warning for Juve, and one the home team failed to heed as they fell almost instantly behind. Kevin-Prince Boateng stretched the home defence with a storming run down the left flank, and did enough to turn in a low cross from the byeline. Giampaolo Pazzini was intelligent enough to let the ball run and it was El Shaarawy who took full advantage, as the Serie A top scorer curled a well-taken effort past the flailing Storari and into the corner of the net. Milan's attacking prowess could not hide certain deficiencies at the back, though, and Alessandro Matri had a golden chance to level proceedings after connecting with a cross from Sebastian Giovinco, but unmarked, the striker nodded wide. Fortunately for the hosts, that miss was a minor blip on their way to an equaliser. Francesco Acerbi was the villain for Milan, after giving away possession he compounded his error by felling Matri on the edge of the area. A marvellous free-kick from Giovinco gave Marco Amelia no chance, and with just 12 minutes played Juve were back on level terms at 1-1. The Rossoneri continued to press in search of the lead, but in truth were rather lucky to enter half-time level both on the scoresheet and in terms of personnel. Giovinco was handed another chance to strike from a dead-ball situation, but this time Amelia was equal to it and pulled off a spectacular save to tip the effort over. The youngster then failed to capitalise on Acerbi's scuffed header that put him clean through against Amelia, firing wide on his left foot. Phillippe Mexes, meanwhile, pushed his luck by obstructing Storari, having already earned a booking for a vicious challenge, but to Juve's disappointment he was given a final warning. The game continued in the same open, high-octane fashion after the interval, and Giovinco again had the chance to put his side in the ascendancy. The striker attempted to take advantage of a fortuitous deflection from close range, but he failed to make decent contact and Amelia had little problem in saving down low. At the other end Boateng also troubled the keeper, forcing Storari to get down and stop a decent effort from distance. As extra-time loomed both teams appeared to lower their tempo, playing more cautiously in anticipation of either an additional 30 minutes, or a decisive strike coming on the counter. Teenage Milan substitute M'Baye Niang briefly raised pulses with a jinking run that was finally ended on the edge of the area by Leonardo Bonucci. In the dying minutes Niang again went close as his header flew wide of the post, but at the final whistle the game remained deadlocked at 1-1. The match had barely kicked off for the 30 minutes of added time before Juve forced themselves into the lead for the first time. Emanuele Giaccherini did well with a tireless run to spearhead the break, and his deep pass rebounded into the path of Mirko Vucinic, who made no mistake in finishing from close range. Massimiliano Allegri's side desperately threw themselves forward in search of a way back into the match, but were frustrated in their onslaught by a determined backline and the heroic Storari, as they bid farewell to the Coppa Italia. The victory books Antonio Conte's team into the semi-finals; where they join Lazio, who entered the last-four thanks to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Catania.
