  1. Gianluigi Buffon: I Will Quit Football When Italy Stop Calling Me The number 1 has hinted at retirement when the Azzurri calls end, and he has confirmed his date with the doctor... Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has hinted that he could quit the game once the Nazionale call ups stop. The Massa-Carrara born custodian will be making his 100th Italy appearance when he takes to the field on Saturday night against the Netherlands. Buffon is happy at having reached the milestone, but has downplayed the occasion. "I have done everything to be here because I wanted to be in L'Aquila," Buffon told the press, referreing to his rapid recovery from flu. "100 games? It's a nice number, but one like the rest. The National team is always important, and it will also determine the end of my career. When Italy no longer calls me, I will be very very close to retiring." The goalkeeper has been playing with a knee injury, and he has confirmed that he will go under the knife once Juve get over the Inter, and Bayern Munich hurdles. "I will play against Inter and Bayern, and then I will have the operation after that." Reports suggest he needs surgery to fix a meniscus in his right knee.
  2. Giorgio Chiellini: Netherlands Clash Is More Than Just A Friendly The powerful defender is ready to tackle Holland to the ground with determination... Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini is preparing himself for a rough and tumble encounter against the Netherlands, claiming it's more than just a friendly. La Nazionale welcome the Oranje in Pescara on Saturday night. And the Juventus defender believes this is the perfect chance to sharpen their skills, and fire a warning shot ahead of the World Cup. "At this point there are no more friendlies, especially with the World Cup so near," Chiellini told the press. "This is a fundamental game for us in terms of South Africa. We will give our maximum and then we will see what happens. This certainly is not a friendly match from our point of view." Napoli goalkeeper and Azzurri number three Morgan De Sanctis is also looking ahead to the rumble. He hopes his side can benefit from these friendly games as he urges cohesion and focus. "The World Cup run starts now and we are all waiting to give the right responses. There is little time to become compact and create an even more solid group."
  3. Gianluigi Buffon Saddened By Passing Of Robert Enke The World Cup winner has spoken of his own "terrible time" and has urged people who feel depressed to open up to those who love them... Italy and Juventus star Gianluigi Buffon has spoken about the death of fellow goalkeeper Robert Enke, who took his own life on Tuesday. The 31-year-old sympathises with the situation, explaining that depression can be a very powerful emotion and that people must not be fearful of seeking support. "I went through a terrible time," admitted the shot-stopper, according to Calciomercato. "You lose sense of yourself, it seems like nothing is rational. You must not be afraid to ask for help and be among the people who love you." Buffon is currently training with the Italian national team ahead of their upcoming friendlies against the Netherlands and Sweden. Enke's funeral will be held on Sunday following a short memorial service at the AWD-Arena, the stadium of club side Hannover 96.

  5. Gianluigi Buffon Recovers From Flu & Will Join Italy Squad Buffon has been given the all-clear to reunite with the squad, and Giuseppe Rossi will join him in Rome after receiving special dispensation to arrive late... Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has recovered from influenza and will join the rest of the squad in Rome on Wednesday afternoon. Sky Sport Italia reports the Juventus man has shaken off the virus over night and is ready to return to action. The report claims professor Enrico Castellacci, the Azzurri chief medic, has given Buffon the all-clear to come back. Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi will also join the squad alongside Buffon. He missed the reunion on Tuesday after having special permission to play in the Copa del Rey. The morning will start with a training session. Nicola Legrottaglie, Riccardo Montolivo and Giampaolo Pazzini will take part after recovering from minor set-backs. Coach Marcello Lippi was up bright and early. He prepared the training pitch alongside Fabio Grosso early on Wednesday morning.
  6. Chiellini & Legrottaglie: Defence Still Needs To Improve The centre-backs believe some fine tuning of the defence will help the club achieve their objectives... Juventus defenders Giorgio Chiellini, and Nicola Legrottaglie have hailed their defence, which is statistically the strongest in the Champions League, but they say more can be done to make it completely watertight. The Old Lady have only conceded once in Europe, compared to 13 in Serie A and Chiellini feels the need to improve domestically, as he urges his team-mates to plug the holes. "Our defence in Europe? I think it's just something casual because we still have to grow and avoid distractions," Chiellini told Tuttosport. Legrottaglie also boasted about the clubs' European record but, like Chiellini, he feels some improvements can still be made. "The goal we conceded in the Champions League was offside. However, we are doing well in Europe," added the stopper. "I have faith though. There are still margins of improvement and I am convinced we can grow even further."
