Atletico Madrid-Juventus Betting Preview:
Why the aerial duels may be key tonight

Atletico have scored many headed goals this season, while Juve boast some excellent players
in the air, making the price of 4/1 for the first goal to be a header great value.

Oct 1, 2014

The champions of Spain meet the champions of Italy at the Estadio Vicente Calderon this evening in what should be a fascinating encounter between Atletico Madrid and Juventus.

Atleti will be greatly buoyed by their 4-0 thrashing of high flying Sevilla at the weekend and it should come as no suprise that coincided with a return to the touchline of coach Diego Simeone after a touchline ban.

Juventus, meanwhile, have made an ominously impressive start to the defence of their Serie A title, winning all five of their domestic matches without conceding a goal.

They kept a clean sheet in overcoming Malmo on matchday one although the 2-0 scoreline does not quite reflect how hard Juve had to work for that win.

This evening the Italians are clear outsiders at 5/2 (3.50) while Atletico are offered at 13/10 (2.30) and the draw can be backed at 23/10 (3.30).

With two resolutely tight defences meeting, the logical selection is to back a low-scoring affair and the price of 8/15 (1.53) accurately reflects the likelihood of this being goalfest.

Instead of trying to predict the number of goals scored, perhaps a wiser strategy is to predict of how the first goal will be scored. If, as looks likely, this is a tight game, then chances from open play will be few and far between.

In terms of set-pieces, Atletico have shown themselves to be easily the best team in Spain and possibly Europe at scoring from dead ball situations and to this end the price of 4/1 (5.00) for the opening goal to be a header looks an excellent option for a value bet.

The statistics back this selection up with eight of Atleti's 11 goals in La Liga coming from set pieces, almost all of them headers.

Juve for their part boast some excellent headers of the ball in Fernando Llorente, Alvaro Morata and Giorgio Chiellini and could also be dangerous in the air, giving this bet a great chance of paying out at a healthy price.

Atleti lose Gabi for Juve

Oct 1, 2014

Atletico Madrid have named 18 players for tonight’s match with Juventus, including Alessio Cerci but not Gabi Fernandez.

Gabi’s place in the starting XI was believed under threat from a bruised ankle sustained at the weekend, but he has been left out of the squad for tonight’s Champions League group stage match altogether.

Cerci, who was speculated as not ready to be included, has made the cut, but Mario Mandzukic is expected to be supported in attack by Antoine Griezmann and Raul Garcia.

Atletico Madrid squad to face Juventus: Moyá, Oblak, Godín, Siqueira, Ansaldi, Juanfran, Miranda, Giménez, Mario, Tiago, Koke, Raúl García, Arda Turan, Saúl, Cerci, Griezmann, Mandžukic, Raúl Jiménez

Line-ups: Atletico Madrid-Juventus

Oct 1, 2014

Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente start as Juventus take on Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

The Champions League clash kicks off at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT) at the Vicente Calderon.

The pressure is on the Spaniards, as they surprisingly lost their opening match 3-2 away to Olympiacos, whereas Juve beat Malmo 2-0.

Max Allegri confessed he had two doubts going into this game based on whether Martin Caceres or Angelo Ogbonna would start in defence, while Llorente got the nod ahead of ex-Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata.

There’s no budging Tevez from the line-up, as Apache has scored six goals in five games between Serie A and the Champions League.

Andrea Pirlo, Andrea Barzagli and Romulo missed out on the trip to Spain due to injury.

Atleti were one minute away from winning the Champions League in May, losing the Final to Real Madrid in extra time.

Gabi Fernandez failed a fitness test this morning and is left out due to a bruised ankle, while ex-Torino star Alessio Cerci is on the bench.

Mario Mandzukic shook off an injury to play with 19-year-old Saul and Raul Garcia in support rather than Antoine Griezmann.

Tiago Mendes will relish this opportunity to face his former club, while Coach Simeone battled Juventus for the Scudetto wearing the jerseys of Lazio and Inter.

Diego Godin has pointed out with some glee that he is the last man to have put a goal past Gigi Buffon, when playing for Uruguay against Italy in the World Cup.

Juve have won all six of their competitive games this season with clean sheets.

Earlier today, Atletico Madrid’s youth team beat their Juventus counterparts 1-0.

Atletico Madrid: Moya; Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Ansaldi; Koke, Tiago, Arda Turan; Saul; Raul Garcia; Mandzukic

Atletico Madrid bench: Oblak, Siqueira, Gimenez, Mario Suarez, Cerci, Griezmann, Raul Jimenez

Juventus: Buffon; Caceres, Bonucci, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Vidal, Marchisio, Pogba, Evra; Llorente, Tevez

Juventus bench: Storari, Ogbonna, Padoin, Asamoah, Pereyra, Morata, Giovinco

Marotta: 'Important points in Madrid'

Oct 1, 2014

Juventus director Beppe Marotta knows there are “three very important points at stake” against Atletico Madrid.

The Champions League match kicks off at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT) at the Vicente Calderon.

“It is an important game, a valid test to understand our current form,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

“After we changed Coach and had a great start to the season, this is a strong way to verify where we are right now, but having said that there’s a long road ahead of us too.

“It is therefore too early to start talking about this as an in-or-out qualifying showdown. They are three very important points at stake, but not decisive yet.

“Atletico Madrid reached their apex in recent years. They invoke fear in opponents, but only the right degree of reverence.

“Juve have always had an important role in the Champions League and that will be the case again tonight in front of an impressive crowd.”

HT 0-0: Juve hold their own in Madrid

o5qfc0.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Juventus dominated possession at the Vicente Calderon, but it’s still 0-0 at half-time with Atletico Madrid.

Elsewhere in this group, Malmo have taken a surprise 1-0 half-time lead over Olympiacos.

The Bianconeri had won all their competitive games this season with clean sheets and visited last year’s beaten Champions League Finalists. The pressure was on Atleti to deliver after losing their opener 3-2 at Olympiacos. Gabi was injured and Antoine Griezmann dropped in favour of 19-year-old Saul, while Mario Mandzukic played with a protective mask after breaking his nose last month, although he took it off after 13 minutes. Juve missed Andrea Pirlo, Romulo and Andrea Barzagli, picking Martin Caceres rather than Angelo Ogbonna at the back.

Atleti had won their last five meetings with Italian clubs, knocking Milan out last season just weeks after Max Allegri was replaced by Clarence Seedorf.

Juve gave their new all-green strip its debut and Claudio Marchisio blasted wide from distance, while Leonardo Bonucci went into the book early on for jumping with his elbow raised.

Arda Turan got away on the counter, but Mandzukic backheeled it on to Arturo Vidal’s prone body – including his arm – from point-blank range.

Atleti’s high pressing game was causing problems and it led to Mandzukic testing Gigi Buffon from the edge of the box. Diego Godin nodded a free kick well over and Fernando Llorente just failed to make contact with a dangerous cross.

Juve had 69 per cent possession in the opening half-hour and Paul Pogba spun to curl not far wide of the far post. The French midfielder also hit a fresh-air volley in the box after Carlos Tevez was crowded out.

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Juventus: Turan fires
Spanish champions to victory

The attacker's second half goal was enough to give Diego Simeone's men all
three points against the Serie A champions in a close encounter.

Oct 1, 2014

Juventus suffered a first defeat under Massimiliano Allegri as a goal from Arda Turan earned Atletico Madrid a 1-0 home win on Wednesday.

The Turkey international converted from close range 15 minutes from time to ensure last term's beaten Champions League finalists claimed their opening points in this season's competition.

Juve had not conceded a competitive goal under Allegri, who was appointed in July, prior to the Group A clash and that record looked set to remain intact as a result of a scrappy affair.

Atleti boast a fearsome recent home record in Europe - avoiding defeat at the Vicente Calderon in last season's competition - and the two sides cancelled each other out for much of a fixture that saw plenty of disruptions and stoppages due to fouls.

Mario Mandzukic's tame strike 25 minutes in was the only effort on target during the first half, while the in-form Carlos Tevez was kept quiet by the hosts, who were without injured captain Gabi.

However, when the sides seemed on course for a draw, Turan got on the end of a Juanfran cross to nudge home the winner and leave Allegri cutting a frustrated figure on the sideline.

Amid a fast-paced opening that saw possession change hands regularly, Leonardo Bonucci picked up a yellow card for tangling with Mandzukic after a reckless jump.

Atletico then had half-hearted penalty appeals turned down when Mandzukic and Turan felt Arturo Vidal handled in the area.

The Croatia international stung the palms of Gianluigi Buffon from distance after 24 minutes, in an opening half-hour devoid of clear-cut chances.

Paul Pogba's curled effort from outside the area veered wide of Miguel Angel Moya's left-hand post as the latter stages of the first half became even more scrappy.

With fouls aplenty from both sides, the game remained fractured and there was no sign of a goal prior to the interval.

Juventus dominated the opening exchanges after the break but, as in the first half, failed to cause Atletico too many problems.

Another Turan delivery led to shouts for a penalty as it deflected off Stephan Lichtsteiner and struck Martin Caceres on the arm - although referee Felix Brych remained unmoved.

However, Turan was to come up with the goods for Simeone as he timed his run into the area to get on the end of Juanfran's cross after Mandzukic had failed to connect with Juanfran's delivery.

The winger - involved in much of the limited attacking play from the hosts - turned home the winner to hand the hosts maximum points on Simeone's return to the dugout following his Uefa ban.

CL: Atleti get better of Juventus

2mzkytf.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Juventus had more possession at the Vicente Calderon, but were beaten by Arda Turan’s goal for Atletico Madrid.

It leaves their Champions League group perfectly poised, as Malmo beat Olympiacos 2-0, so all four teams are now on three points.

Pogba curled a free kick well wide from a dangerous position, as Pirlo’s absence was sorely felt. Goalkeeper Moya horribly fumbled on a simple catch and was fortunate Llorente hesitated, as he was able to scramble the ball back under control.

Martin Caceres risked an own goal when Arda Turan’s fierce strike took a double deflection to bounce up on to his hand, but there could be no question it was involuntary, and Buffon prevented more damage.

Atleti stepped up a gear and had their first period of genuine pressure going into the hour mark, but Juve held out for that 15-minute spell and got back in control of possession.

Tevez had a shot charged down in the box and an audacious Koke volley off target, but the deadlock was eventually broken when Juanfran’s cross sailed past Mandzukic, but found Arda Turan to tap in from six yards. That was the first goal conceded by Buffon in all competition this season.

Max Allegri switched to a four-man defence and Stephan Lichtsteiner’s pull-back was deflected inches past the post bu Raul Garcia at full stretch, risking an own goal.

Llorente couldn’t quite turn on a Lichtsteiner assist and Juve failed to break down a solid Atleti squad despite having over 60 per cent possession.

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Juventus:
Turan Breaks Bianconeri Hearts

64ezqd.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Massimiliano Allegri suffered his first defeat as Juventus coach as Atletico Madrid battled to a 1-0 victory in Wednesday’s Champions League fixture at the Estadio Vicente Calderón.

Arda Turan struck midway through the second half to give Diego Simeone’s men the three points and a vital win in Group A.

Juventus dominated possession early on and moved the ball around while Atletico, holding a high defensive line, continually harassed the Bianconeri and always looked to win the ball and break up field.

The opening stages offered frantic play but neither side were able to achieve any penetration against well organised defences. Several key battles began developing, especially between Mario Mandzukic and Giorgio Chiellini, and Paul Pogba and Tiago.

This spilled over in the 12th minute when Leonardo Bonucci collected the first booking of the game for an elbow on Mandzukic as they challenged for a high ball.

Juventus, missing the injured Andrea Pirlo, continued to control possession but lacked any attacking spark and failed to create any meaningful chances. They were hindered by a disciplined Atletico defence which mobbed the Juventus strikers in numbers the moment they received the ball.

After one or two half chances the Mandzukic had the game’s first shot at 24 minutes. Arturo Vidal was caught in possession by the terrier like Koke and Arda Turan, who supplied the Croat. However, his shot from range was saved with ease by Gianluigi Buffon.

Juventus had their own effort ten minutes later when a high ball broke kindly for Paul Pogba, but the resulting shot sailed wide.

In a very physical first half and the game was continually interrupted as both sides gave away a plethora of free kicks. However, despite the high energy of the contest, neither side was able to create any significant opportunities to score.

The second half continued in the same vein with Juventus controlling possession but doing little with it. The scrappiness of the first period was also in evidence as the contest was constantly stopped for fouls, destroying any sense of flow to the game.

The referees leniency was ended by Chiellini who received the games second yellow card just before the hour.

Atletico Madrid saw a credible penalty claim waved away after the resulting free kick was fired low across the Juventus box and ricocheted up and off Martín Cáceres’s hand.

That incident seemed to spur the Spanish team on and they began to assert themselves more on the game, putting the Juventus back line under sustained pressure.

It was Atletico who finally broke the deadlock in the 74 minute. Tiago slipped the ball wide to Juanfran who delivered a perfect cross which landed at the feet of Turan, who had stepped past Stephan Lichtsteiner. The Turk’s deft touch guided the ball into the corner of the net, leaving Buffon helpless.

Juventus urgently tried to get back into the game and almost forced Raúl García into scoring an own goal.

Former Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata came on to a hostile reception as Juventus looked for a late equaliser but by this time Atletico had tightened up and managed to see out the result.

Atletico Madrid vs. Juventus: Score,
Grades and Post-Match Reaction

bsx4.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Atletico Madrid earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Juventus during Wednesday's UEFA Champions League fixture, with Arda Turan scoring the only goal of the match in the second half.

The visitors took control of the ball early while Atletico were comfortable defending the box and luring on the counter, and as a result, chances were few and far between. Leonardo Bonucci was booked for using his elbow against Mario Mandzukic, as the Croatia international was closely marked by the Italians.

The first real chance was for the hosts, when Turan pulled the ball back for Mandzukic, who tried a back-heel from close range. The ball was blocked by Arturo Vidal and Gianluigi Buffon, although the ball appeared to hit the Chilean on the arm, as shared by AS English's Nicholas Rigg:

Nicholas Rigg @nicholasrigg
Big claims for a handball from Vidal (I think) from the #Atleti fans but not given. #Juve had eased their way into in the last 10 mins or so

The action was involuntary, however, and from close range, Vidal had no chance to pull his arm back. No penalty was given.

Juventus continued to dominate possession, as evidenced by this tweet from the club after 30 minutes:

JuventusFC ✔ @juventusfc
Dopo 28', POSSESSO PALLA: 70.2% per la Signora, 29.8% per l'Atletico #AtleticoJuve #UCL

Mandzukic pounced on a spill from Vidal and blasted a shot on goal from the edge of the box, but Buffon read it well and made a good save. Paul Pogba had a nice effort on goal from the edge of the box, curling his effort just wide.

There was a scary moment when Turan stayed down on the pitch after a duel with Stephan Lichtsteiner with an apparent head injury. The Turk made a strong tackle on Lichtsteiner, who fell down awkwardly on top of his head. Fortunately, Turan was able to continue after receiving treatment.

Atletico controlled the final minutes of the first half but couldn't find their way past Juve's defence, as the teams went into half-time scoreless.

The same pattern repeated early in the second half—Juventus kept possession around Atletico's box but were clearly missing Andrea Pirlo's incisive passing, while the Spanish side displayed patience and aimed for the counter-attack.

Atletico had another penalty shout when a fast cross was deflected onto Martin Caceres' arm and nearly disappeared into the goal, but Buffon reacted quickly and kicked it off his line. Caceres had no time to react to the deflection, and the penalty was once again not given.

Football Italia were confused by the sequence:

footballitalia @footballitalia
Caceres almost scored an own goal as a fierce Arda Turan strike was deflected up off two players on to his hand!

Atletico now took control of possession, and Antoine Griezmann (who was introduced at half-time) added some spark and pace to the Spanish side's attack.

Turan finally broke the deadlock with 15 minutes left on the clock, the first goal Juventus conceded all season. Juanfran's cross missed Mandzukic but fell all the way to the Turk, who slotted home from close range.

Juventus now upped the pace and Raul Garcia nearly put the ball in his own goal, finding the outside of the post after making contact with Lichtsteiner's cross.

The Italian champions launched a toothless final offensive, and Atletico comfortably held on to win the match.

Grades

Gianluigi Buffon: B

Andres Kudacki/Associated Press
Juventus looked out of sorts and lost for ideas in possession, and their top player was undoubtedly Buffon, who continues to defy his age. The Italy No. 1 could do nothing about Turan's effort and was otherwise flawless.

Koke: B+

Pulling the strings in midfield, Koke showed everyone his reputation for underperforming in the biggest matches is unfounded. A nuisance for Pogba and Claudio Marchisio throughout the match, the midfielder served as the Atleti's main creative outlet as well.

Arda Turan: B+

Turan's contributions might not always be pretty, but his tireless work rate is of vital importance for his squad. Disturbing Juve's buildup play by pressing high and scoring the pivotal goal, Turan was the clear man of the match.

Post-Match Reaction

Giorgio Chiellini told Mediaset (h/t to Football Italia) he believed Juventus deserved at least a point:

We played our game, we knew it would be like this and we did it well.

It’s a shame, as the game should’ve ended at least 0-0 and we wanted to make the most of any gap we found.

We leave here with regrets, as we deserved at least a point here.

We knew the group would be very balanced, now in three weeks we have an important trip to Athens that will say a lot about what we can do in this group.

Post-Match Outlook

The hosts were desperate for a strong result after their loss to Olympiacos on Matchday 1, and a win over Juventus will do nicely. Their Champions League campaign is now back on track, and with Malmo next on the schedule, last year's finalists' chances of making the next round are looking good.

The same can be said for the Bianconeri, who will receive a boost by the return of Pirlo. Losing at the Vicente Calderon is no disgrace, and the doubleheader with Olympiacos will likely decide which team joins Atletico in the knockout stages.

Arda Turan leaves it late as
Atletico Madrid see off Juventus

33aas88.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Arda Turan struck in the second half to inflict Juventus' first defeat of the season and get Atletico Madrid's Champions League Group A campaign up and running on Wednesday evening.

The Turkish midfielder scored the only goal of the game in the 74th minute at the Vicente Calderon stadium to give last season's finalists all three points in the 1-0 victory.

After suffering a 3-2 defeat in their opener at Olympiakos a fortnight ago, Atletico went into the encounter without injured captain Gabi and under pressure to deliver.

Juve dominated possession but failed to test Atletico goalkeeper Miguel Moya throughout the match.

The outcome has lifted Atletico level on three points with Juve, Malmo and Olympiakos after two games played.

The visitors, heading into the game on the back of six straight wins in all competitions and having kept a clean sheet in the process, looked nervous in the early stages.

Raul Garcia headed Atletico's first chance just wide after five minutes before it was Juve who threatened, Claudio Marchisio seeing his long-range effort go off target.

Mario Mandzukic had the best chance to break the deadlock in the 25th minute but the Croatian's rising shot from 30 yards was kept out by Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Shortly after, Diego Godin met a Koke free kick into the box with a header which went over the bar.

The hosts finished the first half with a good chance for Saul Niguez, whose header from Koke's cross flashed wide.

Simeone made his first substitution early in the second half with Antoine Griezmann replacing Niguez.

Juve struggled to break Atletico's defensive line and in the 72nd minute, Carlos Tevez' goal-bound attempt was blocked by a defender.

Atletico pressed forward more aggressively and were rewarded when Juanfran's cross found Turan in the box and his left-footed strike towards the far post beat Buffon.

The hosts almost shot themselves in the foot four minutes later when Stephan Lichsteiner's effort from 14 yards took a deflection off Garcia and the ball just went wide of the far post, with Moya already beaten, Atletico then holding on for a vital victory.

Chiellini: 'Juve deserved a point'

311wajd.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini said Juventus “deserved at least a point” against Atletico Madrid and they are in a “very balanced group.”

The Bianconeri were beaten 1-0 at the Vicente Calderon despite having 61 per cent possession, as Arda Turan tapped in at the 75th minute.

“We played our game, we knew it would be like this and we did it well,” Chiellini told Sport Mediaset.

“It’s a shame, as the game should’ve ended at least 0-0 and we wanted to make the most of any gap we found.

“We leave here with regrets, as we deserved at least a point here.”

Malmo beat Olympiacos 2-0, so all four teams in this Champions League group have three points.

“We knew the group would be very balanced, now in three weeks we have an important trip to Athens that will say a lot about what we can do in this group.”

Juve suffered their first defeat – and conceded their first goal – of the season and on Sunday face a Scudetto showdown with Roma.

“Let’s leave tonight to recover from this disappointment, then from tomorrow we will think about Roma.”

Buffon: 'Juve must take more risks'

2lkxp3b.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Gigi Buffon warned Juventus “need to take more risks” in Europe after their 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Arda Turan scored the first goal Buffon has conceded all season between Serie A and the Champions League.

“It was a balanced game in which we certainly were not inferior. We might not have created a huge amount, but over the whole 90 minutes a draw was more than fair,” the goalkeeper told Sport Mediaset.

“Unfortunately, in football and in life, a small detail can send the result one way or another.”

The Bianconeri dominated possession at the Vicente Calderon, holding the ball for 62 per cent of the game, but did not have a single shot on target.

“Atletico are a team who have become a reality on the European scene whose strength is solidity and counter-attacks. Today they should’ve taken the initiative, but had a few problems doing that against us.

“What we need to look at is our own house, to improve ourselves and irritate our opponents a bit more away from home.”

It was a very different performance from Juve’s 3-0 victory away to Atalanta on Saturday.

“Atletico Madrid are part of the elite of European football, but it is also true that if we want to make a step forward and gain our maturity in Europe then we need to take more risks away from home.”

Juventus face Roma on Sunday in Serie A, fresh from an impressive 1-1 draw at Manchester City.

“Roma’s performance in Manchester confirmed everything they did well last season and this. They faced a side with more talented individuals than Atletico, but who are less of a team unit, so the approach could be different.”

Simeone shows reactive Allegri
how to change a game

The Atletico Madrid boss made a winning impact with his changes from the sidelines,
while his Juventus counterpart reacted only when it was too late.

Oct 1, 2014

COMMENT
By Kris Voakes | International Football Correspondent
Diego Simeone did it again on Wednesday.

He rallied and he cajoled from the touchline. He ran the risk of being banished to the stands. He stirred up the Vicente Calderon crowd to get behind their Atletico Madrid heroes. And, it turned out, he had the winning attitude that put Juventus counterpart Massimiliano Allegri to shame.

In their starting XIs, the two coaches had matched each other stride for stride for the Champions League Group A clash. But the second-half turnaround that sparked Atleti’s 1-0 win had the fingerprints of Simeone all over it.

The first half gave us a fair idea of what was to follow, with two packed midfields cancelling each other out for the entire 45 minutes. With both sides looking to play with a rather narrow approach, no leeway was given for the likes of Koke, Patrice Evra or Stephan Lichtsteiner to make space out wide. It was fairly dull stuff for the neutral.

Simeone’s introduction of Antoine Griezmann for Saul shortly after the interval was the first liberal move by either coach either before or during the match, and suddenly there seemed to be a slight injection of pace and flair.

Juve continued to display a decent shape, but for the home side there was more hope that something might come of their endeavour. Allegri had his side hanging on for a point, but Simeone’s proactivity had resulted in more opportunities in the final third.

Atleti’s goal arrived 15 minutes from the end. Stephan Lichtsteiner lost his man when tracking in to cover for Martin Caceres, and Arda Turan neatly turned home a wonderful cross from Juanfran. Allegri’s luck had run out.

While the Bianconeri might have felt it a bit harsh that their hard work had been undone, they hadn’t threatened nearly enough to truly be considered as being on a par with the Spanish champions. They didn’t get a single shot on target throughout the match, and Allegri only looked to do something about that when his side had already fallen behind. It was a trait for which he was regularly found out in his days as AC Milan boss.

Whereas Simeone had been quick and incisive about his first change, Allegri hadn’t. And Juventus’ first concession of a goal in over five months proved costly.

"It was a very even game. In this competition, though, the small details are decisive," Juve skipper Gianluigi Buffon admitted afterwards, and he had hit the nail on the head.

Both sides should still qualify from this group, with all four teams now on three points with four games to play. Juve will not panic. Only one team has got a maximum 18 points from their Champions League group since 2002, and a loss away to last year’s runners-up is hardly the end of the world.

But the long-standing inability of their coach to be proactive in his alterations must be addressed if they are to be a contender come the final stages this term.

Match Analysis: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Juventus

j11sih.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Arda Turan's late goal handed Atletico Madrid all three points in their Champions League Group A clash with Italian champions Juventus on Wednesday evening.

Both sides struggled to create opportunities in what was a close-fought encounter, but Turan's effort 15 minutes from time secured all the points for last season's finalists.

Here, Sports Mole dissects the 90 minutes of action between the two European rivals.

Match statistics

Atletico

Shots: 8
On target: 2
Possession: 38%
Corners: 4
Fouls: 21

Juventus

Shots: 5
On target: 0
Possession: 62%
Corners: 2
Fouls: 28

Was the result fair?

In truth, it was not a brilliant spectacle at the Calderon. Both sides really struggled to create openings, but credit must be given to both defences, who certainly came out on top in the battle against the attacking personnel on display. There was little to choose between the two teams in the first period, but Juventus did have more of the ball.

It was a similar story in the second 45 minutes, but the longer the match went on, the more likely Atletico looked to claim all the points. There would have been few complaints if the match ended goalless, but Atletico just about shaded the contest overall.

Atletico's performance

It has been a mixed bag for Atletico this season, with a clutch of new signings still settling into the team and head coach Diego Simeone recently returning from a touchline suspension. Mario Mandzukic is also carrying a facial injury and struggled to get the best of the Juventus defence this evening.

That said, defensively Atletico were just superb. Much of their success last season was built on a solid unit at the back and Diego Godin and Miranda were back to their very best this evening. Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez have started the season in good form for Juve, but neither got a sniff tonight. As touched upon, there was little to separate the two teams in general play and neither attack played particularly well, but Atletico started to force the issue in the final third of the contest and got their reward late on.

Juventus's performance

Juve entered the match sitting top of the Italian league and having not conceded a single goal this season. Like Atletico, the Serie A champions were brilliant defensively this evening, but they really struggled in the final third. In their usual 3-5-2 formation, wing-backs Patrice Evra and Stephan Lichtsteiner both failed to offer a threat in attack, while Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal were also disappointing in the middle of the park.

Llorente and Tevez had some brief moments in the final third, but the attacking pair could not get the best of a brilliant Atletico defence. The away side still had time to secure an equaliser after conceding with 15 minutes remaining, but they never really offered the impression that they could level late on. They are the dominant force in Italy, but really need to improve their performances in the Champions League.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Miranda: In truth, this could easily have gone to Miranda's defensive partner Godin, with both centre-backs sensational for the home side this evening. Miranda just shades it, however, due to his overall performance. Llorente is one of the most difficult strikers to mark in European football due to his size and power, but Miranda never afforded the frontman any space in the Spanish capital. When needed, he was also prepared to bring the play forward from the back. It was just about a faultless defensive performance from the Brazilian.

Biggest gaffe

There isn't really one single moment that stands out, but Juventus's inability to push forward in the latter stages was disappointing. It wasn't as if Atletico were desperately holding onto their lead in the final moments, with Juve almost accepting the one-goal defeat. Overall, it was a poor attacking display from the Italian side.

Referee performance

To suggest that it was a tough match for referee Felix Brych to officiate would be the understatement of the century. The contest was littered with late challenges and clashes between both sets of players, but the German did well to calm proceedings when needed. He awarded just the one yellow card in a feisty first period, but had to get his card out seven more times in the second half. It was an untidy match in terms of free kicks and fouls, but Brych cannot really be criticised for his part in the match.

What next?

Atletico: The Spanish champions return to league action with a trip to Valencia on Saturday. Their next Champions League clash is against Malmo on October 22.

Juventus: Juve also return to domestic action this weekend with the eagerly-anticipated clash against Roma on Sunday evening. They also return to Champions League action on October 22 with a trip to Olympiacos.

Simeone: 'Tactically intelligent game'

2vja8fb.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Diego Simeone explained Atletico Madrid’s “tactically intelligent game” to beat Juventus 1-0 in the Champions League.

“We faced a great team,” Cholo told Sport Mediaset.

“I think we played a tactically intelligent game, as Juve have strong strikers who are reference points and champions in midfield with a high three-man defence. It’s not easy to play against them.

“We knew that we could hurt them with crosses and pull-backs, as it is difficult for them to close down the wings.”

Juventus had 62 per cent possession, which in the opening half-hour was close to 70 per cent, but ex-Catania Coach Simeone assured it was all part of the plan.

“We allowed them to press us in midfield and in the first half Juventus played better, but we were more aggressive after the break and could slowly see what was going to happen.

“I think the game opened up, when we introduced Griezmann and moved to a 4-4-2 we knew it would open up the game. We happened to get the goal first.”

Malmo beat Olympiacos 2-0 tonight, meaning all four teams in the group have three points. Juve are on top thanks to goal difference.

“It is going to be a tough group, as it is not easy to win away from home against any of these sides. Now we have to focus on the Liga, where we feel like we’re playing in about 20 minutes!”

Vialli: Atletico Madrid Prevented
Juventus From Playing

2zxpkqd.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Gianluca Vialli has asserted that Atletico Madrid prevented Juventus from playing their natural game during the Champions League clash at the Estadio Vicente Calderón.

In a battle of a match, the Bianconeri where consigned to a 1-0 defeat by a second half Arda Turan strike.

“It was a very complicated game,” Vialli told Sky Sport Italia following the match.

“Allegri has asked the team to play a technical game, but Atletico prevented them from doing so by any means at their disposal.

“They did not allow Juve to be able to develop their play as they normally do.”

The result see’s all four of Group A’s teams level on three points each after two games.

Bonucci: 'Juve forced defensive Atleti'

dll1u1.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Leonardo Bonucci said Juventus deserve credit for “forcing Atletico Madrid to sit back and wait for us.”

The Bianconeri dominated possession at the Vicente Calderon with 62 per cent of the ball, but were beaten 1-0 by an Arda Turan goal.

“Perhaps we lacked the final pass, as we did well until the final third, but Atletico close with all 11 men behind the ball,” Bonucci told Sport Mediaset.

“We tried to spread the play and had some chances, albeit not clear ones, but were penalised on an error as we allowed them a cross that should’ve been closed down.

“We know Serie A and the Champions League are two different situations. In Europe when you make a half-mistake, there are players who can take advantage.

“If we look on the positive side, we dominated possession against an Atletico Madrid side that almost won the Champions League last season and forced them to sit back and wait for us.”

Simeone: Chances Were Hard
To Come By Against Juventus

9azoty.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Diego Simeone was full of praise for Atletico Madrid’s match winner Arda Turan after he helped his side to victory over Juventus.

The Bianconeri succumbed to a 1-0 defeat thanks to a second half goal, despite having more of the ball throughout the game.

“I think both teams stuck true to their ideas tonight and chances were hard to come by,” the Argentinian told the press.

“We smelled more danger in the second half but Juanfran and Arda Turan did what they always do.

“The game turned out just as I thought it might do. A close affair that would be decided on minor details.

“We played against a team of fighters tonight but fortunately for us, the details were in our favour.

“Arda Turan is an extremely intelligent player but I think the team was very good overall tonight. Now this one is done, our attentions are already on the upcoming game against Valencia.”

Chiellini: Atletico Madrid didn't
deserve to beat Juventus

The Italian defender is disappointed with how Arda Turan's goal left Allegri
and Co. returning to Turin with not even a point to show for their efforts.

2mo47rn.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Atletico Madrid did not deserve their 1-0 victory over Juventus in Wednesday's Champions League tie, argues Bianconeri defender Giorgio Chiellini.

The Group A game at the Estadio Vicente Calderon was deadlocked for long periods as both sides struggled to break down their opponents' back line but, with 16 minutes left on the clock, Atleti winger Arda Turan broke through to send Diego Simeone's men level on three points with Massimiliano Allegri's men, Olympiakos and Malmo in the table.

Chiellini was unhappy that his side failed to come away from the Spanish capital with even a draw but insists that expectations within the club have always been that their Champions League group is a tough one.

"We played well and it's a pity we didn't pick up a result that we would have deserved," the Bianconeri centre-back told reporters after the game.

"We knew it would be a tight group. Our away trip to Olympiakos will give us a decent indication of our chances of qualification."

Juventus's clash with the Greek champions will be on October 22 after the international break and Serie A ties with Roma and Sassuolo.

Atlético Madrid 1 - Juventus 0:
Initial reaction and random observations

2wbxb1z.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Welcome to the world of Diego Simeone and Atlético Madrid, ladies and gentlemen.

It's not going to be pretty or fully of flare. It's not going to be one where they dominate possession and wow you with all of their attacking skills. Hardly. It's going to be anything but all of that. Atlético's gameplan is to emulate the personality of their coach. They will play with fire, swallow you when you try and breakdown their defense, and they will just frustrate the living hell of you.

It was ugly — and that played right into Simeone's hand. It was an absolute grind over the course of 90 minutes, playing right into Simeone's hand, too. Atléti were never going to have the majority of the possession, instead being some damn organized on defense that will frustrate the living hell out of the opposing team as they record zero shots on goal.

Luca Cetta @l_cetta
49 fouls in that game.

Well that's not good. But that's also how Atlético clearly set out to play it. They wanted a tough, scrappy game that prevented Juventus from doing much in the final third of the field, and that's what they got. Hey, mission accomplished.

One mistake, one simple mistake in the box on marking by Stephan Lichtsteiner not keeping track of Arda Turan. That allowed Atlético to grab the lone goal — the first Juventus has allowed in all competitions this season — and the three points that come along with the victory.

JuventusFC ✔ @juventusfcen
.@gianluigibuffon: "It was an even game but we didn't create a great deal and need to be a bit more adventurous, especially away from home."

Truth. Does the man know what he's talking about, or does the man know what he's talking about?

Just remember this: Atlético Madrid made it to the Champions League final playing this way. They may have a starting XI that looks different to last year's squad that nearly one the double, but they haven't changed the way they play the game or suddenly have hired a new manager. This is Simeone at his best.

And after two games, Group A in the Champions League is as wide open as wide open gets.

Random thoughts and observations

I repeat, Juventus didn't have one single shot on target Wednesday night. Squabble all you want about the ref and how he handled things, but you can't score any goals if you don't test the goalkeeper.

Seriously, no shots on goal. When was the last time we can say that about a Juventus team playing in the Champions League and/or Europe entirely?

Edit: The year was 2006 and the opponent was Arsenal.

So, so, so many fouls. I'm seriously wondering if Giorgio Chiellini was called for one while boarding the team bus after the match.

Those new green Juventus jerseys ... they sure are bright. That's about as positive of a comment I have regarding these shirts developed by the highlighter division at Nike.

Is there anybody on the Juventus roster who needs a goal more than Fernando Llorente right now? He did his usual battling up top as the target man, but he's just lacking that certain something in front of goal right now. He's nowhere close to the same kind of striker we saw once he got some playing time under his belt last season. Maybe it's time to throw Álvaro Morata a start or two — although putting him into the fire against Roma might be a tough task to ask of him — but something needs to happen.

Here's your positive spin: Juventus didn't play well at all and still narrowly lost to one of the Champions League finalists. Juventus probably should have gotten at least one point out of Wednesday night's match despite not playing all that well at all. You take away a simple man-marking mistake by Lichtsteiner, and Juve almost certainly do come away with a point. That's just football sometimes.

No shots on goal. That's still frustrating the hell out of me.

Who's ready to ramp it up once again and stress out for a couple hours against Roma? Raise your hands high and proud, friends!

Allegri: I’m Happy With Juventus’
Performance, But Not The Result

2e3mm9y.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has insisted that he is satisfied with his team’s Champions League performance against Atletico Madrid, despite losing to a second half goal from Arda Turan.

The Bianconeri controlled the match for long periods and dominated possession but were unable to break down the Spanish champions and they created very few chances to score.

“The match was very tight and we found it difficult to make a break through,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was essential to make the most of our opportunities as they defend well and do not commit recklessly. Our boys were good however, and we are satisfied with the performance.

“Atletico defended with 10 men and it was difficult to create chances,” the 47 year old continued.

“Even in the first half against Malmo we had difficulties, so it was especially tough against Atletico who are much stronger.

“Im not satisfied with the result, but I’m happy with the personality shown by the team.”

The result coupled with Olimpiacos’s 2-0 defeat to Malmo means every team in Group A is equal on three points.

Godin: Juventus Made It Very
Difficult For Atletico Madrid

25sv2ww.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin has praised Juventus following the home side’s 1-0 win at the Vicente Calderon.

Both sides had fought tenaciously for a vast amount of the match before a late Arda Turan goal left Juventus empty handed.

“It was a difficult match and it was fought as we had imagined,” the 28 year-old told Spanish newspaper AS post match.

“Juventus do have great players and they put in the maximum effort, but we gave everything and got rewarded for it.”

All four teams in Group A have achieved three points leaving the question of progression in the group unanswered.

“We are pleased with the result and now we will focus on our next match which could be decisive,” he concluded.

Llorente: Juventus Deserved
More Against Atletico Madrid

vpdobc.jpg

Oct 1, 2014

Juventus striker Fernando Llorente as taken to social media to express the team’s disappointment after losing to Atletico Madrid.

The Italian champions lost 1-0 to the La Liga winners in their Champions League group stage match earlier this evening.

“We are leaving [Madrid] sad,” the 29 year-old posted on Twitter following his disappointing display for the Bianconeri.

“The team deserved more,” he added in a match that was dominated by rash challenges and questionable refereeing.

Massimiliano Allegri will be confident of beating both Malmo and Olimpiacos to a place in the knock-out stages.

Atlético Madrid

1 Moyá - Did not have a lot to deal with all evening as he was behind a strong defence. However, was called into action in the second half and did well to palm Juanfran's wayward clearance round the post.

20 Juanfran - Pressed Evra whenever the Frenchman had the ball to stop crosses coming in. Even assisted the winning goal with a fantastic cross in from the right wing.

23 Miranda - Did not give Llorente a moment inside the box to turn and get a shot away. Continually cleared balls out of the box and distributed well at the back.

2 D. Godín - Headed away just about every cross and long pass that came into the box and did not allow Llorente to outmuscle him. Organised the defence pretty well when under pressure.

15 C. Ansaldi - Was up against the direct runner that is Lichtsteiner but pinned the full-back at the halfway line and didn't allow him to venture forward to the byline. Put some teasing crosses into the box from the left.

6 Koke - Was originally deployed down the right but tucked in to form a three-man midfield whenever Juve had the ball. Improved after the break when he began to press the midfield three.

5 Tiago - Made some decent late runs into the box but was mainly tasked with breaking up the play in the middle. Was the catalyst for the winning goal as he started the attack with a penetrating run through the middle.

10 A. Turan - Continually drifted in from the left to link up with the strikers and did well with the space available. Proved to be the match winner when he came in at the back post to neatly slot into the net.

17 Saúl - Slotted in beside Tiago in midfield but did nothing apart from patrol the area in front of the defence when Juve had the ball. Didn't contribute much and was taken off five minutes after half time.

8 Raúl García - Started the match beside Mandzukic up top but soon drifted out of the box and attempted to get in the faces of the defence. Runs into the box proved to be a threat but couldn't get his head on anything.

9 M. Mandžukić - Made his intentions known early on as he got involved in scuffles with Chiellini and Bonucci. Put himself about inside the box and tested the gloves of Buffon with a decent strike from 25 yards.

Substitutes

7 A. Griezmann
- Added much needed tempo and pace to the match and have Atletico something different in attack.

Juventus

1 G. Buffon - Was the busier of the two goalkeepers but only by a tad. Palmed away a decent Mandzukic strike in the first half and had no chance with Arda's winner which was neatly placed in the corner.

4 M. Cáceres - Was lucky not to give away a penalty in the second half when the ball cannoned off his hand inside the box. Always available for a pass in central areas when Juve were on the front foot, though.

19 L. Bonucci - Gave Mandzukic a clatter early onto rattle the Croatian but struggled to deal with the physical presence at times. Guilty of lumping aimless balls up to the strikers.

3 G. Chiellini - Struggled to deal with the movement of Arda whenever the winger drifted inside and earned a yellow card for a cynical tug of the shirt on him. Did make some good blocks inside the blocks though.

26 S. Lichtsteiner - Provided little width down the right despite being in a five-man midfield and struggled to get beyond Ansaldi. Completely lost the run of Arda at the back post as the Turk ran in to score.

23 A. Vidal - Lazy in possession at times and was robbed of the ball a few times right in front of his defence. Was a little better going forward but still failed to provide enough for the attack with passes out of midfield.

8 C. Marchisio - Was on the periphery of the play at times but at least attempted to add some tempo and pace into Juve's passing whenever he was on the ball. Didn't provide enough support to the strikers.

6 PAUL POGBA - Athleticism was an asset at times in the much as it allowed him to drift into dangerous areas. Came relatively close with a strike from the edge of the box but didn't assert enough dominance in the middle.

33 P. Evra - Had a little more joy than his fellow wing-back. Linked up pretty well with Tevez whenever the Argentine ventured out to the left, but still didn't contribute enough near the touchline.

10 C. Tévez - Cut a frustrated figure times as he was continually forced to come out of his striking position into deeper areas to receive possession. Didn't really do much when he had it and was never a threat to goal.

14 Llorente - Physical presence proved to be Juve's best chance of a goal as he continually backed into defenders, but couldn't get the ball under control to get a shot away. Rarely got the better of Miranda and Godin.

Allegri: 'Juve tried to win'

Oct 1, 2014

Massimiliano Allegri insisted Juventus “played to win, but it wasn’t easy” after their 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

“We played to win, but we didn’t achieve it,” the Coach told Sport Mediaset.

“We knew the strengths and weaknesses of this team and of Atletico, so allowed them very few chances. They only threatened with the goal and a chance in the first half.
“It is very difficult to play against Atletico, as they close up the spaces and hit you on the counter. We created several positive situations, but could not get the goal.”

Juve did not have a single shot on target, despite holding possession for 62 per cent of the game, and Allegri was irritable when questioned about the performance.

“We tried to win. It was not easy. We tried by controlling the ball to limit Atletico Madrid’s strength, which is playing in bursts, knocking down the ball and on set plays.

“We limited them for 60-odd per cent of the game, but the one time we made a mistake on the loose ball, we conceded a goal.”

Allegri was asked why Juventus took such a negative approach in Madrid when they were far more attacking away to Milan and Atalanta in Serie A.

“Atletico defend very well and concede few goals, then make a lot of fouls and create chaotic situations in sudden flashes. We could not have left ourselves open to those counter-attacks, so we had to control the ball, even if that meant not pushing quite as hard forward.

“In the second half we had periods where we did not play well on a technical level and therefore did not create as many chances as we could have.”

Arrigo Sacchi was in the studio and critical of their negative approach, which annoyed Allegri.

"Every time we seem to see different games. We have a different concept of football. Maybe you just prefer the way Atletico Madrid play. I don't know what to do about that."

Juventus are still top of Serie A with a 100 per cent record and face Roma in a head-to-head on Sunday.

“Juve arrive in good shape, as we won all five in Serie A and still haven’t conceded there. It will certainly be a great game and tonight’s defeat will not change the atmosphere in the team.

“After all, only a victory tonight would’ve put a big building block on qualification and Malmo’s win means it is perfectly balanced.”
