Massimiliano Allegri is keen for Juventus to get the Serie A and Coppa Italia titles locked up before thinking about the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Juve can claim a historic sixth straight Scudetto with a point against second-place Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday and they will stay in the Italian capital in order to face Lazio in the Coppa Italia final three days later.

Should the Turin giants get the job done in both competitions they will have a chance to become just the second Italian side to complete a treble when the take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Cardiff on June 3.

But rather than getting carried away with thoughts about what could end up as the greatest season in Juve's history, Allegri is keen to remain cautions and take things step by step.

"At the moment we have not won anything. Tomorrow we have the opportunity to win the championship for the first time," he told a news conference.

"It won't be easy, these are two teams with high-level players who are chasing their goals. It will be a tough, tough game.

"We need to take things one step at a time, very calmly. We don't need to think about what will happen in a month.

"It's a beautiful moment, but we must be focused."

Juve were denied a treble by defeat to Barcelona in the 2015 Champions League final, and Allegri acknowledged this time there is more pressure on his team to succeed.

He said: "It's a completely different experience. Two years ago many did not expect us to reach the final, but this year there was a lot more expectation.

"We now have important games and three or four days before we will prepare the game.

"We have to go to Cardiff with the confidence that we can win the Champions League."

Juventus' Gianluigi Buffon 'deserves' to

win Ballon d'Or - Massimiliano Allegri

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri believes his captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon "deserves" to win the 2017 Ballon d'Or.

Buffon, 39, has never won the award before but is enjoying a successful season, with Juve on the verge of sealing the Serie A title and in the Champions League final, while he is still going strong with Italy.

Whatever happens in the Champions League final when Juve come up against holders Real Madrid, Allegri feels Buffon should still be handed the Ballon d'Or.

"Gigi deserves the Ballon d'Or regardless of the Champions League," Allegri told a news conference. "He deserved it in previous years too, having won so many titles and the World Cup."

Juventus are in their second Champions League final in three seasons, having lost 3-1 to Barcelona in 2015.

"The difference now is that two years ago we didn't expect to be in the final, whereas this year there were more expectations around us," Allegri said.

"We need to get there with a relaxed approach, as we have some important games to play first. At the right moment, three or four days before the final, we'll prepare. We can win the Champions League and you need belief for that."

Meanwhile, Allegri praised former Juve boss Antonio Conte after he guided Chelsea to the Premier League title on Friday.

"I have to compliment Conte for what he's done, as it was not easy to join a foreign league and win straight away," Allegri said.

"We have many coaches who have won abroad, so the Italian school of management is excellent. The culture and tradition of football are very good, as proved by the four World Cups won by the Nazionale, the players who foreign clubs come to pick up and the meticulously-prepared tactics. Building play is part of the culture and tradition of Italian football."

Spalletti: 'No Roma-Juve excuses'

http://www.football-italia.net/102520/spalletti-no-roma-juve-excuses

May 13, 2017

Luciano Spalletti’s Roma have an injury crisis ahead of the showdown with Juventus, as Edin Dzeko is out with Radja Nainggolan and Diego Perotti doubts.

It kicks off on Sunday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Capocannoniere Dzeko is out injured, but Nainggolan and Perotti need fitness tests too, while Kevin Strootman is suspended.

“We need the guarantees that someone can play almost the full game, because this is not the final match of the season,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“They are strong players and seeing the absence of other important figures, you don’t want to miss out on more. I would always want Radja and Diego available, as they have the character to change a big game. We’ll evaluate them in the last training session.

“It’s disappointing because Edin is our centre-forward and the team had just started giving him the right service, getting the best out of his qualities. Obviously, without him there, we are lacking something.

“However, the team will work differently and we have to go forward without excuses. Victory would give us a better chance of finishing second in the table and we must keep clear heads. We’ve got a clear path to our target and need to keep our eyes on it.

“This season Juve have always been ready on the big occasion. They’ve shown that they can control the game without necessarily going at full throttle. They can hold something back.

“For the moment there is a gap between the sides, but Roma did the work we needed to and tried to get up close to Juve, but in the end couldn’t manage it. I expect it’s probably the fault of the Coach that we lost a few too many games.

“Even if we had some really great performances, Juventus are still a bit ahead of the rest.”

Today Napoli Coach Maurizio Sarri said it would’ve been fair for them to play simultaneously with Roma, as the two sides are fighting for second place and only one point apart.

“It probably would’ve been the right thing, but that was true in previous weeks as well.”

Spalletti was asked about the controversial decision not to use Francesco Totti in the 4-1 victory away to Milan, specifically that far-right Lega Nord politician Matteo Salvini had criticised him.

“Thank goodness Salvini is against me. It would’ve been a problem to have him in my favour, to be honest, so I thank him for that.

“Tomorrow Totti could give a contribution. I am glad to see more fans in the stadium, because some of the players who arrived fairly recently have rarely seen the passion of the supporters.

“When I was called in, I was asked to reconstruct Roma at a decent level and I think today Roma have a strong squad. I always have to choose what is best for Roma, not taking anything away from Francesco. There are different roles to be respected. I try to do what is best for Roma, first and foremost.”

Juventus take on AS Roma in the nation’s capital tomorrow in a game that should settle the destination of the Serie A title. Ahead of the game, manager Massimiliano Allegri cautioned his side to be patient.

“This will be the first time we can clinch the title regardless of other results, so it only depends on us. It won’t be easy, as it’s a big game between two teams with top players who are chasing their respective targets.

“If we do it this weekend, good, otherwise we’ll think of the Coppa Italia Final and then the next test. There’s no rush, games have to be played in the moment. Roma and Napolideserve praise for their campaigns, as it’s a battle in Serie A and their results have been extraordinary.”

Both Claudio Marchisio and Sami Khedira are out injured and new permanent signing Medhi Benatia will start against his former club.

“Seeing Khedira in the Coppa Italia Final or against Crotone next week is impossible. We’ll evaluate him day by day to see about the Champions League Final.

“I am happy that we signed Benatia on a permanent basis. He had some muscular problems, but is an extraordinary player. In terms of defence, Roma have one of the best sides in Europe.”

Juve have another big game midweek as they will take on Lazio in the Coppa Italia Final on Wednesday night.

“In the last three months I have changed from five to eight players per game. The important thing is to have at least two who play regularly. In attack I have four and we’ll see tomorrow if I leave one out or start all four.”

There have been questions about Francesco Totti and his imminent retirement.

“Everyone has talked about this except for him. When he speaks and decides, then we can comment. He illuminated football for 20 years, in Italy, Europe and the world.”

Allegri also sent a message of congratulations to Antonio Conte who clinched the Premier League title yesterday with Chelsea.

“I have to compliment Conte for what he’s done, as it was not easy to join a foreign league and win straight away.

“We have many Coaches who have won abroad, so the Italian school of management is excellent. The culture and tradition of football are very good, as proved by the four World Cups won by the Nazionale, the players who foreign clubs come to pick up and the meticulously-prepared tactics.

“Building play is part of the culture and tradition of Italian football.”

What is the difference for Juve this time around in the Champions League final?

“The difference now is that two years ago we didn’t expect to be in the Final, whereas this year there were more expectations around us.

“We need to get there with a relaxed approach, as we have some important games to play first. At the right moment, three or four days before the Final, we’ll prepare.

“We can win the Champions League and you need belief for that.”

How about Gianluigi Buffon, who is being spoken about as a Ballon d’Or winner if Juve win the European title?

“Gigi deserves the Ballon d’Or regardless of the Champions League. He deserved it in previous years too, having won so many titles and the World Cup.”

Juventus ready to clinch Serie A title

against Roma, continue historic run

ready-to-clinch-serie-a-title-against-roma-continue-historic-run

May 13, 2017

For the sixth year running, Juventus have delighted their fans with a fluid and winning brand of football. With trophy upon trophy won, going undefeated in the 2011-12 season and reaching the Champions League final twice, the Italian side have reclaimed their pre-Calciopoli reputation and are back to being the force they once were.

Yet despite all the wins, the glory and the spectacular array of talent the club has purchased and sold in these past few seasons, no side has delighted as much as this year's group. While much of the early part of the season was dedicated to criticising a "weakened" midfield, there's no doubt that what Massimiliano Allegri has constructed this year is a side that the world and Juve fans believe are the best in Europe, with or without the coveted Champions League trophy.

The midfield boasts combative and creative players, the forward line is both thrilling and efficient while the defence is, as always, a mighty force. Playing as a collective unit -- but one that boasts reliable talent in every area of the pitch -- there is no player Juve doubt or an opponent they do not feel they can defeat.

It is remarkable to see how the side move, with every player trying to make themselves available for the pass. Comfortable and decisive in possession and excellent off the ball, the Bianconeri are well versed in how to exploit space, how to be incisive and how to pull defenders out of position.

Moreover, a new formation -- coupled with the endless wins -- has fortified a once-fragile mentality, unleashing the potential within the side. Every purchase has been astute, every tactical scheme prepared: Juventus are simply on another level this season.

As such, it appears a treble is the least this side should win and it all starts with the match against Roma on Sunday evening.

For a game that could well result in Juve's first trophy of the season, Allegri's men must be physically and mentally prepared for Luciano Spalletti's side. Possessing talent and fight, Roma have proven themselves to possess a little more than most other teams in the peninsula, even if internal politics and mental fragility have robbed the team of the capacity to achieve more.

With Edin Dzeko injured and Kevin Strootman suspended, all eyes will be on how Spalletti will line up his side. The most likely option is that both Mohamed Salah and Stephen El Shaarawy will play, with Radja Nainggolan behind them should he be available, in a 3-4-1-2 formation. With both wingers capable of making quick and incisive runs, Juventus will need to be alert to the danger and work in unison to neutralise the threat.

However, there is always a chance Spalleti will hand the soon-to-retire Francesco Totti an opportunity to make a difference in a big match. One of the last remaining stalwarts of what proved to be a sensational and winning generation, Totti is the eternal legend with the capability of unlocking the toughest defences.

According to the club, Totti will stop playing this summer and instead work with the club to ensure success at management level. As such, he may well come on against Juve and try to delay the Old Lady's celebrations.

With both Sami Khedira and Claudio Marchisio out with injury, Allegri is likely to depend on Tomas Rincon to play alongside Miralem Pjanic in a 4-2-3-1 formation. A midfielder who has proved solid when brought on off the bench, Rincon has adapted well to his new surroundings. However, many would like to see Rolando Mandragora offered some time to play in these last remaining fixtures of the season.

Technical, physical and intelligent, the youngster was offered a few minutes to flex his muscles for the club in the match against Genoa and made an impression. Good at reading the game and intelligent with his passing, Mandragora could well prove to be the future of Juve's midfield. However, in order to properly assess his levels, he must be offered a chance to demonstrate his abilities; if not against Roma, then perhaps against Crotone or Bologna over season's remaining weeks.

As for the rest of the team, the quicker they mathematically secure the title, the quicker they can focus on the upcoming finals in hopes of achieving that treble.

Jose Callejon saw “the right mentality and good football” as Napoli beat Torino 5-0, so now hopes Juventus sink Roma this evening.

The Spaniard scored one in today’s 5-0 demolition of Torino, which means Roma have to defeat Juventus tonight or lose second place, at least for this weekend.

“We are happy, as our objective is to win every remaining match and take second place,” Callejon told Mediaset Premium.

“Today we saw the right mentality and good football, so we hope to continue like this to the end of the season.

“In the first half we were too wasteful, but things went much better after the break. We hope Juventus win tonight and that Roma can drop a few points.”

Davide Nicola says Crotone will have to be patient against Juventus after victory over Udinese.

The Pitagorici continued their fine late season form to move to within a point of safety today, securing a 1-0 home win over the Bianconeri.

And speaking following a fifth win in seven matches, the tactician said his players will have to hang in there in the hope of defying the odds to upset Juve next week.

"We are working on ourselves, without looking at the teams ahead of us," Nicola told reporters.

"We have the match against Juventus next week and obviously it won't be easy.

"We know it will be difficult, but we'll continue believing until the end. Today against Udnese it was a really tough game.

"Juve are extraordinary, they won't have any particular motivation to play well against us. From our part, we will need patience."

Both Roma and Juventus are transformed at the Olimpico in their showdown, as the Bianconeri can win the Scudetto and Giallorossi need to answer Napoli.

It kicks off at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

There is so much at stake in the Capital tonight, as a point would be enough for Max Allegri’s side to celebrate their sixth consecutive Scudetto.

Napoli beat Torino 5-0 this afternoon, so if Roma don’t win, they will drop down from second place and that automatic Champions League group phase spot.

Luciano Spalletti is forced to do without Capocannoniere Edin Dzeko due to injury, while Radja Nainggolan is not 100 per cent fit either, but still starts.

Diego Perotti moves into a False 9 role, supported by Mohamed Salah, Stephan El Shaarawy and Nainggolan.

Antonio Rudiger returns from suspension, but Kevin Strootman is still banned after his dive against Lazio.

Juventus are on track for the Treble, but this is the first step, followed by Wednesday night’s Coppa Italia Final against Lazio, which will also be at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Then there’s the June 3 Champions League Final with Real Madrid in Cardiff.

With all this in mind, Allegri is making a few adjustments, as Sami Khedira and Claudio Marchisio have muscular problems, while the season is over for Daniele Rugani and Marko Pjaca.

Paulo Dybala, Giorgio Chiellini, Dani Alves and Andrea Barzagli are rested, but Gigi Buffon keeps his spot in front of a revamped defence.

Medhi Benatia and Miralem Pjanic are both former Roma players and take on their old club.

Juan Cuadrado and Mario Mandzukic flank Gonzalo Higuain in what seems to be a 4-3-3 system.

Spalletti has a dismal record against Juventus, beating them only once along with three draws and 18 defeats.

Juventus have won only one of their last six competitive visits to Roma, 1-0 in May 2014, plus a pair of 1-1 draws and three defeats.

Roma: Szczesny; Rudiger, Manolas, Fazio, Emerson; De Rossi, Paredes; Salah, Nainggolan, El Shaarawy; Perotti

Roma bench: Alisson, Lobont, Vermaelen, Juan Jesus; Peres, Mario Rui, Grenier, Gerson, Totti, Frattesi, Tumminello

Juventus: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Benatia, Asamoah; Lemina, Pjanic, Sturaro; Cuadrado, Higuain, Mandzukic

Juventus bench: Neto, Audero, Dani Alves, Barzagli, Chiellini, Alex Sandro, Marchisio, Rincon, Mattiello, Mandragora, Dybala

Fazio: 'Fundamental for Roma'

Federico Fazio warns tonight’s clash with Juventus is “fundamental” for Roma and second place “all depends on us” after Napoli’s victory.

It kicks off at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

“It’s a fundamental game for our objective. We have to focus on ourselves, it all depends on us and our performance,” the defender told Mediaset Premium.

Napoli crushed Torino 5-0 today, so temporarily flew into second place and only a victory tonight will get Roma back into it.

“These are three points that we have to get for a Champions League place. It’s decisive, we prepared well and are ready to do our work.”

Fazio was asked if the constant speculation over Coach Luciano Spalletti’s future had affected the locker room atmosphere.

“The media speculation doesn’t change anything. In every club there is talk about the Coach from the outside, so all players are used to it.”

Mario Lemina expects “Roma to be very aggressive tonight,” but Juventus are going for the win, even if they only need a point for the Scudetto.

It kicks off at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

“As with every game, the objective is to win,” the midfielder told JTV.

“It is going to be a very complicated match, because Roma are trying to qualify for the Champions League.

“We must give our all, as in every game, and go for the victory. I expect Roma to be very aggressive tonight.”

Simply avoiding defeat at the Olimpico will be enough to mathematically clinch their sixth consecutive Serie A title.

Marotta: 'Pjanic adapted to Juve'

Juventus director Beppe Marotta notes Miralem Pjanic found “a different environment and philosophy” after leaving Roma.

The midfielder faces his old club tonight.

“We want to do well against Roma, but they are a tough opponent to overcome,” Marotta told Mediaset Premium.

“So far we’ve already played 53 matches and by the end of the season it’ll be 57 games. It’s only right therefore that the Coach rotates his squad to keep everyone’s energy levels up. Whoever steps on to the field is up to the task.”

Pjanic infuriated Roma fans when he activated the release clause in his contract to join their rivals Juve over the summer.

“Pjanic found a different environment and philosophy when he arrived at Juventus. He paid a price for that early period of adaptation and interpretation, both on and off the field.

“Then the player emerged who truly reflects his qualities.”

Daniele De Rossi replied to an unexpected Mario Lemina opener, but the 1-1 half-time result is ideal for Juventus and bad news for Roma.

The Bianconeri knew just avoiding defeat here would mathematically clinch the sixth consecutive Scudetto and rested several players ahead of Wednesday’s Coppa Italia Final with Lazio, on top of Sami Khedira, Daniele Rugani and Marko Pjaca injuries. Napoli beat Torino 5-0 this afternoon, so the hosts needed a victory to recapture second place, but Edin Dzeko was injured and Kevin Strootman still suspended. Miralem Pjanic and Medhi Benatia faced their former club.

Juventus have won only one of their last six competitive visits to Roma, 1-0 in May 2014, plus a pair of 1-1 draws and three defeats.

Kwadwo Asamoah got a rare start at left-back and his ferocious left-foot strike from a corner smashed against the upright just seven minutes in.

Gonzalo Higuain curled over and a Kostas Manolas overhead kick was a little too ambitious, but Juventus did break through on 21 minutes.

It was a very well-worked goal, as Stefano Sturaro’s long ball allowed Higuain to spring the offside trap, but instead of going for goal, he knocked it down for unmarked Mario Lemina to tap in from six yards. Pipita intelligently drew the defenders to him and was generous with the assist.

Roma got back on track almost immediately, as from a corner Gigi Buffon performed a great save on the Manolas free header and Daniele De Rossi’s follow-up from four yards, but the goalkeeper could do nothing on De Rossi’s second attempt under the bar.

Wojciech Szczesny had his gloves stung by a Higuain snapshot, then Nainggolan’s ball over the top found Mohamed Salah, but the header was straight at Buffon.

Roma 1-1 Juventus (Half-Time)

Lemina 21 (J), De Rossi 25 (R)

Roma: Szczesny; Rudiger, Manolas, Fazio, Emerson; De Rossi, Paredes; Salah, Nainggolan, El Shaarawy; Perotti

Juventus: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Benatia, Asamoah; Lemina, Pjanic, Sturaro; Cuadrado, Higuain, Mandzukic

Roma 3 Juventus 1: Bianconeri

forced to wait for Serie A title

Juventus will have to wait another week to claim an historic sixth successive Serie A title after Roma ran out 3-1 winners at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

Having failed to clinch the Scudetto by being held to a 1-1 draw against city rivals Torino last weekend, Juve were denied the point they needed for glory by second-half goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and Radja Nainggolan.

The former AC Milan forward only started after top scorer Edin Dzeko sustained a calf injury, but he made his selection count in the 56th minute when he found the bottom corner with a shot that deflected wickedly off Leonardo Bonucci.

Nainggolan made sure of the win with a thunderous effort nine minutes later, leaving Juve to turn their attention to Wednesday’s Coppa Italia final against Lazio back on this ground to secure the first leg of a possible treble. Their third opportunity to clinch the Scudetto comes next weekend at home to relegation-threatened Crotone.

Things looked good for Juve when Mario Lemina - in as one of six changes from the side that booked a place in the Champions League final with a 2-1 win against Monaco on Tuesday - struck for the first time this season after 21 minutes.

Roma equalised just four minutes later through Daniele De Rossi, with El Shaarawy and Nainggolan completing the turnaround after the restart to ensure Luciano Spalletti’s side held onto second position after Napoli’s 5-0 win at Torino earlier in the day.

Roma showed plenty of attacking intent from kick-off but could have found themselves behind as early as the seventh minute.

A corner by Miralem Pjanic – roundly jeered on his first match against his former side in the capital – was only cleared as far as Kwadwo Asamoah, who cracked a searing 20-yard drive against the upright.

Roma did not heed the warning and Juve did go in front 14 minutes later as Gonzalo Higuain showed a sublime touch to square Stefano Sturaro's excellent pass over the top for Lemina to tap home.

Roma did not take long to equalise, though. Gianluigi Buffon did well to keep out Kostas Manolas' header and a follow-up effort from De Rossi, but the Giallorossi captain was quick to react and fire into the roof of the net at the second time of asking.

There were chances for both teams to add to their tally, Wojciech Szczesny keeping out a fierce strike by Higuain before Mohamed Salah's free header was comfortably held by Buffon.

Juve appeared in control but were stunned 11 minutes after the restart. A quick free-kick was worked to El Shaarawy on the left and his tame right-footed effort took a nick off Bonucci and somehow span beyond the helpless Buffon.

Allegri sent Dani Alves on for Stephan Lichtsteiner to give his side more of an attacking threat but the Brazilian was guilty of playing Nainggolan onside as the Belgian rifled a fierce shot past Buffon at his near post.

Paulo Dybala replaced Sturaro in an attacking switch from Allegri and he headed wide, Bonucci following suit as the clock ticked down.

With Roma in a celebratory mood Francesco Totti, believed to be retiring at the end of the season, replaced Salah in the 93rd minute.

Higuain was kept out by the legs of Szczesny to ensure there were no such scenes of revelry for Juve as their wait to make history continues.

Key Opta stats:

- Roma have scored at least three goals in six of their last nine games.
- The last time Juventus did not win in three successive Serie A games was back in September 2015.
- Juventus have scored exactly one goal in each of their last five Serie A games against Roma.
- Daniele De Rossi has scored in three Serie A games in a row for the first time.
- Juventus have had 16 different goalscorers this season, only Lazio (17) have more.
- Gianluigi Buffon played his 450th Serie A game for Juventus.
- Juventus have hit the woodwork 20 times in Serie A this season, only Roma have done it more often (21).

Goals from Daniele De RossiStephan El Shaarawy and Radja Nainggolan ensured that Juventus were made to wait in their pursuit of a sixth consecutive Scudetto, after title rivals Roma produced a 3-1 victory over the Old Lady at the Stadio Olimpico this evening.

The game started at an electric pace and Juventus might have taken an early lead through left-back Kwadwo Asamoah, who saw his effort from the edge of the box cannon back off the post after just seven minutes.

The Old Lady slowly gained a foothold in the contest and they eventually took the lead thanks to Mario Lemina in the 21st minute, as the youngster tapped home to complete a wonderfully-worked move between Gonzalo Higuain and Stefano Sturaro.

Roma hit back almost instantly, however, as De Rossi made the most of Gianluigi Buffon's weak save from a corner in order to bundle home and peg the visitors back.

Chances arrived at both ends of the Stadio Olimpico and the next was to fall to Juve, this time when Higuain produced a standout touch before lashing an effort towards goal that was somehow kept out by a sprawling Wojciech Szczesny.

Nainggolan caught Juventus napping just before half time when he lifted the perfect through-ball into the box for Mohamed Salah, but the winger could only head straight at Buffon despite being left unmarked in the area.

The visitors' title dreams were temporarily put on hold just after the interval when they fell behind through El Shaarawy's strike, the winger's effort deceiving Buffon before creeping in at the far post to make it 2-1 to Roma.

Juve's wait to be crowned champions was confirmed not too long after when they conceded a third, Nainggolan cementing Roma's victory with a thunderous effort from just inside the box with just over 20 minutes to go.

A second half double from Stephan El Shaarawy and Radja Nainggolan gave Roma a 3-1 victory over Serie A leaders Juventus meaning they will have to wait at least one more week before they are to be crowned champions.

Juventus needed just one point from the match to confirm a sixth consecutive Scudetto, and they were well o their way to that Serie A record when Mario Lemina slotted home 21 minutes in. But, an instant reply from Daniele De Rossi, then a 56 minute goal from El Shaarawy and Nainggolan’s thunderstike mean Juve need four points from their last two games to be confirmed champions.

Roma on the other hand moved back above Napoli, who had a 5-0 win over Torino earlier on Sunday, into second place in the standings.

Initially, Juventus created the more dangerous opportunities in the opening period with Kwadwo Asamoah hitting the post and Gonzalo Higuain curling just over the crossbar.

The Bianconeri did eventually breakthrough the Roma backline when Stefano Sturaro played an inch-perfect ball over the top to Higuain, who then side-footed across goal for Lemina to tap home unchallenged at the back post.

Two minutes later De Rossi had Roma level. A Leandro Paredes corner found the head of Kostas Manolas was denied by an expert Gianluigi Buffon save, only for the Juve goalkeeper to instantly deny De Rossi with another miracle save from close range.

The Roma captain eventually smashed into the roof of the net at the second time of asking to score in his third consecutive Serie A game for the first time in his career.

After the break, Roma went for the jugular and got their reward 11 minutes in as El Shaarawy cut into the penalty area from the left and his low shot took a slight deflection off the foot of Stephan Lichtsteiner and rolled into the far corner.

Things got better for the Giallorossi when Nainggolan blasted home a third, 65 minutes in, from a tight angle inside the penalty area.

Even the introduction of Paulo Dybala couldn’t save Juventus. The Argentinian had a couple of chances but both were put wide. Leonardo Bonucci also saw a header go just over the crossbar, after Higuain also had a strike at goal, and right at the death a sensational Szczesny save denied Higuain.

Roma fought back from a goal down to defeat Juventus 3-1, throw a spanner in the Scudetto works and recapture second place from Napoli.

The gap at the top of the table has now been sliced to just four points with two rounds to go, while Napoli are five points adrift of the Serie A leaders. They have picked up just two points from the last three rounds.

Juventus have won only one of their last seven competitive visits to Roma, 1-0 in May 2014, plus a pair of 1-1 draws and four defeats.

Roma turned the game around completely after the restart, as Stephan El Shaarawy cut in from the left and his low right-foot curler took a slight deflection off Stephan Lichtsteiner, creating an unusual spin that bent it in off the inside of the far post.

Juve seemed a little shell-shocked and went 3-1 down when Nainggolan completed a give-and-go with Salah down the right, smashing in the finish at the near post.

Max Allegri had to shake things up and threw on Paulo Dybala, who immediately turned a diving header over the bar on Mario Mandzukic’s cross.

After completing their substitutions, Mandzukic hurt his back with 10 minutes to go and needed treatment, effectively leaving Juve down to 10 men.

Higuain saw his attempt charged down from a Pjanic pull-back, then Leonardo Bonucci put a glancing header just wide from six yards after sneaking up behind Emerson Palmieri.

Dybala had penalty appeals in stoppages for a clumsy Paredes challenge and Francesco Totti got a late run-out. Szczesny also stuck out a foot to deny Higuain one-on-one.

Roma put a dent in the title charge of Serie A leaders Juventus as they came from behind to win 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico and keep alive their own outside hopes of lifting the Scudetto.

Juventus needed just a point to secure the title with two matches to spare and took the lead on 21 minutes through Mario Lemina.

Roma, though, soon levelled when Daniele de Rossi stabbed the ball past Gianluigi Buffon from close range.

The Giallorossi turned the match around in the second half when Stephan El Shaarawy's low shot crept into the bottom corner on 56 minutes and Radja Nainggolan then crashed home a third.

Luciano Spalletti's men moved back above Napoli, who had won 5-0 at Torino earlier on Sunday, and four points behind Juve with two matches left.

The Bianconeri, meanwhile, must now regroup for their return to the Stadio Olimpico in Wednesday night's Coppa Italia final against Lazio and then look to secure the Scudetto at home to relegation-threatened Crotone.

Following Napoli's trashing of Torino, the pressure was also on Roma in the race to secure second place and with it automatic qualification for the group stage of the Champions League.

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri made a few of changes with the likes of Paulo Dybala, Giorgio Chiellini, Dani Alves and Andrea Barzagli rested following the Champions League semi-final win over Monaco.

Despite the new personnel, it was almost a flying start by the Old Lady.

As the ball dropped out following a half-cleared corner, defender Kwadwo Asamoah crashed it back against the left-hand post with goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny beaten.

Juventus swept into the lead on 21 minutes.

Stefano Sturaro clipped the ball over a static Roma defence for Gonzalo Higuain to run onto down the right.

The Argentine forward then unselfishly tapped a pass sideways for the on-rushing Lemina to tap home.

The lead, though, was cancelled out inside four minutes.

A corner was headed down by Kostas Manolas, which Juve goalkeeper Buffon could only push out into the six-yard box.

De Rossi was first to the loose ball, stabbing it goalwards, which Buffon parried but the Roma midfielder remained alert to squeeze the rebound inside the far post.

Just before half-time, Roma were in again when Nainggolan chipped the ball across from the right, but Mohamed Salah could only glance a tame header straight at Buffon.

Roma took the lead after 56 minutes.

El Shaarawy carried the ball into the left side of the penalty area before sending in a low shot goalwards.

The midfielder's effort appeared to take a nick off the boot of Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner and then deceive Buffon as the veteran keeper watched it curl into the far corner.

Before Juventus could respond, Nainggolan drilled in a third on 65 minutes, exchanging passes with Salah on the right side of the Juve penalty area before dispatching an angled drive into the top corner.

With time running out, Juve defender Leonardo Bonucci was pushed forwards and was unfortunate to see his downward header bounce wide after charging in at the far post.

Substitute Dybala went down under a challenge from Leandro Paredes, which on another evening could well have been a penalty, before veteran forward Francesco Totti was given a late run-out, replacing Salah, much to the delight of the jubilant Giallorossi supporters.

In stoppage time, Szczesny blocked a near-post effort from Higuain as Roma closed out an impressive victory.

Daniele De Rossi said Roma fought back to beat Juventus 3-1 “thanks to the fans and it should always be like this. I couldn’t be happier.”

The Giallorossi had gone a goal down to Mario Lemina’s opener, but completed the comeback with De Rossi, Stephan El Shaarawy and Radja Nainggolan.

“It’s a very important result for the table, as Napoli had won earlier,” he told Mediaset Premium.

“Juve just needed a draw, we made a lot of sacrifices and it was a wonderful evening. It has been a great season regardless of what people say.

“The fans reacted well. I don’t want to seem pathetic, but we have to go back to the way we were in the 1980s, when the fans came in these numbers for every game. This was the atmosphere all the time.

“People talked about everything except supporting this team. We won for them and thanks to them, because playing in this atmosphere gives you a different spirit.

“I always score strange goals past Gigi (Buffon). There’s a great rivalry, but if you care about a person, you don’t suddenly stop caring for 90 minutes. We might give each other a kicking sometimes, but I do really care for some of the Juve players.

“This is what matters, the performance, the result and the team. I couldn’t be happier for my whole career. Tomorrow we’ll start working towards the Chievo game, because if we don’t win that, it’s a serious problem.”

Max Allegri admits Juventus “were falling asleep” and have lost some of their focus lately, but the 3-1 defeat to Roma can be “a wake-up call.”

Mario Lemina had given them the lead at the Olimpico, but Daniele De Rossi, Stephan El Shaarawy and Radja Nainggolan completed the comeback.

“It was a good first half, with both teams very aggressive and determined. In the second half we conceded a strange goal on the counter from our own free kick,” Allegri told Mediaset Premium.

Juventus needed just one point here to clinch the Scudetto, but now have two points from the last three rounds.

“I think we let our guard drop and thought we’d done enough to take the result home. The fact we drew with Atalanta and Torino, then lost here, it shows we’ve lost something in terms of concentration.

“At least it’ll be a wake-up call ahead of Wednesday’s Coppa Italia Final with Lazio. We had a good first half, we just needed to stay organised and not allow those chances.

“We were up against Roma, the second strongest side in Serie A, and anything can happen in the head-to-head clashes. We took that into account and knew the Scudetto would be decided in the other games, not against each other.

“I won’t say this was entirely unexpected, but not expected either. We had the game in hand during the first half and need to make sure we’re fully plugged in for the remaining weeks of the season.

“We have to take it one step at a time, because we’ve won nothing yet. We’ve got the Coppa Italia Final and then Crotone, while the Champions League is a month away.

“I thought after the equaliser we could still go on and win it, but we weren’t sharp enough. I realised from the first passes of the second half that we were falling asleep. We gifted them the ball!

“There are times in a season when the ball hits the post and goes in or hits the post and goes out. We knew a point here would enable us to win the Scudetto. We have to look at the positive, which is this’ll make us keep absolutely focused for Wednesday.”

Juventus entered Sunday’s game at the Stadio Olimpico with champagne on ice. All they had to do was not lose. A win would have done it. A draw would have done it. Basically if you were on team Don’t Lose, then you were thinking along the right lines.

Then, even after getting a 1-0 lead, Juve went and did the only thing that would prevent them from celebrating on the Stadio Olimpico turf.

Roma answered Mario Lemina’s opener with a goal three minutes later and never looked back, as Juventus allowed three unanswered goals in a 3-1 loss that prevented any kind of Scudetto celebrations from going down on Sunday night in Rome. Instead of celebrating with said champagne and giving the traveling fans plenty to cheer about, Juventus were left to put all of their latest Scudetto-related plans on hold for at least one more weekend.

So now, the next chance to win a sixth straight title comes next weekend at home against Crotone. Just like this time around, they’ll need to avoid a loss to set the celebrations off. And based on who they’re playing, I like their chances.

But they’re going to have to play a whole lot better than they did on Sunday night if they want to have their final home game of the season be a Scudetto celebration.

The first of two straight visits to the Stadio Olimpico kind of resembled that of the first of two straight visits to the Stadio San Paolo earlier this calendar year.

Basically, it was crap.

Max Allegri clearly had an eye on Wednesday’s Coppa Italia final against Lazio. And hey, based on what his lineup selection was and how many days in between there were in between the second leg against Monaco and Sunday’s showdown with Roma, there’s nothing to really tell us otherwise. That’s fine, and I completely understand it.

But it doesn’t necessarily excuse Juventus from the no-show after getting ahead 1-0.

Would it have been nice to see Juve win the Scudetto on such a big rival’s home field? Well, yeah. Roma will celebrate this win like they just won the title while their actual title hopes rely on Juve suddenly becoming choking dogs like the they’re the Washington Capitals or something.

Poor Crotone. If they get angry Juventus over the weekend, it won’t be pretty.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • There was a point about 15 minutes into the first half that all 10 of Roma’s outfield players were sitting back so deep they were all in their own defensive third. Juventus, of course, were more than happy to kick the ball around and possess it.
Basically what I’m getting at is that Roma, at home, were more than happy to just sit back like it was Juventus playing some kind of mid-table team. (Insert jokes here)
  • Juventus’ defending on Daniele De Rossi’s goal ... not the greatest.
  • Juventus’ defending on Stephan El Shaarawy’s goal ... not the greatest.
  • Juventus’ defending on Radja Nainggolan’s goal ... not the greatest.
  • Basically, Juventus’ defending — from the midfield all the way to the back four — on all of Roma’s three goals was not the greatest.
  • Juventus allowing a total of six goals in their last three Serie A games is just something I’m not used to. At least during this six-year stretch of league dominance.
  • This also sounds weird to say: Juventus have dropped six points in their last three Serie A games. Their last league win was nearly a month ago on April 23 against Genoa. It’s May 14.
  • Stefano Sturaro had a beautiful pass to Gonzalo Higuain to set up Lemina’s goal. He was then never heard from again the rest of the game.
  • Lemina scored the game’s first game. He was then never heard from again the rest of the game.
  • If you were hoping that Medhi Benatia would put in a good performance after seeing his loan deal with Juventus made into a permanent deal, well, this probably wasn’t the kind of game that made you think happy thoughts.
  • As I’ve seen a few people already say on the Twitter machine (and I’ll go right ahead and piggyback off of them), it’s not the result that is the upsetting part but rather the way that Juventus played. Just a disappointing kind of performance.
  • As I write this final point, Juventus has just lost 3-1 to Roma and the Golden State Warriors are down 20 points at halftime to the San Antonio Spurs. I hate sports.

Spalletti: 'Roma eyes on the prize'

Luciano Spalletti feels Roma have finally found their winning mentality after coming back to beat Juventus 3-1. “It’s proving the kind of people we are.”

Mario Lemina had opened the scoring, but Daniele De Rossi, Stephan El Shaarawy and Radja Nainggolan turned it all around to postpone the Scudetto party, closing the gap to four points.

“We had a good game and were missing several players, but we worked as a gritty side, who at times had to make changes and were able to suffer under pressure, keeping a clear head on the objective,” he told Mediaset Premium.

“As I said before the match, what interested us was winning this particular game. The rest is irrelevant. If you want to pay us a compliment, it’s that Roma were always capable of this, but it’s more than the victory, it’s proving the kind of people we are.

“It’s fighting back from a goal down, overcoming obstacles and showing how much we want the result. It’s that little animal that winning teams like Juventus have within them and we want that too.

“I think (referee Luca) Banti had an excellent game tonight, as he let it flow and was very even-handed, immediately showing he wasn’t going to blow the whistle for 50-50 situations. He was consistent and sent an early signal of how he was going to approach it.”

With Edin Dzeko injured and Kevin Strootman suspended, Spalletti used Diego Perotti as a False 9, switching with Mohamed Salah later.

“Perotti is a player who needs lines, to have the ball at his feet and take men on. If he doesn’t have those elements, he’ll struggle.

“You could see from his face when he went off that he wasn’t happy, but those are his qualities and playing in a gap between midfield and their defence is not his wheelhouse. He needs space to run into and work up a head of steam.

“Salah, on the other hand, can turn on a sixpence and cause problems. He seems to prefer playing on the wing, so he can cut in and shoot with his left foot, as he’s seen that he scores a lot of goals that way. But you try putting Salah there when you’ve got Dzeko!

“Now we’ve got some big games coming up and we want to be absolutely focused. To talk about contracts, the future, transfers or anything else just raises up the dust that clouds our vision. It’s better to keep our eyes on the prize.”

Spalletti was asked about his comment in yesterday’s Press conference hinting he’d like to reunite with new Inter director Walter Sabatini.

“The question was, would you like to work with Sabatini again? I can’t insult the man and say no!”

Who were the heroes and villains from the top of the table showdown? Football Italia rates the Roma and Juventus stars.

Roma

Wojciech Szczesny: 6

An easy night for the Pole, who was very rarely tested throughout the evening. There wasn’t much he could have done about the Juventus opener, but from that goal onwards he was solid and gave the four defenders in front of him confidence.

Antonio Rudiger: 6

Much like Szczesny, Rudiger was very solid whenever he was tested tonight. He was strong in the tackle and rarely gave Mario Mandzukic a sniff. He was put on that side to deal with the Croat’s height, and dealt with him fairly well over the course of the 90 minutes.

Kostas Manolas: 6

It may not have been a vintage Manolas performance, but the Greek international was solid enough in the heart of the defence. He marshalled Gonzalo Higuain well enough, and was even a threat going forwards from set pieces. Manolas put in a good performance tonight, and the fact he didn’t have to do too much was testament to his showing.

Federico Fazio: 7

A lot stronger than his defensive partner, Fazio was a top performer for Roma this evening. He was strong in the air, dealt with any threat from the front three of Juve and held the line well when the defensive unit needed to drop deep or push up. A good outing for the former Spurs man and, whilst it may go unnoticed, he was superb.

Emerson Palmieri: 6

Going forward, Emerson provided a good threat, as his pace almost caused havoc, but he was fairly restricted in his ventures forward. Much like the other Roma defenders, he was solid when needed to be, but his occasional bursts forward almost gave Roma another outlet on the left-hand side. A good performance and a reliable showing.

Daniele De Rossi: 7

In recent weeks, the form of captain De Rossi has been criticised, with some claiming he’s ‘over the hill,’ yet tonight he showed how vital he can be to this Roma side. His leadership, his experience and (most importantly) his goal were crucial to this win and not only that, but he led by example. His defensive play allowed his midfield partner to express himself a bit more.

Leandro Paredes: 7

Parades was almost playing like a Miralem Pjanic sort of role, in the sense that he pulled the strings of the Roma team and made the game tick. His passing and vision set off those in front of him, and he was perfect in finding the ball to the two wingers every time. Paredes is starting to really make a name for himself across the continent, and performances like tonight show why.

Mohamed Salah: 7

One of the most effective and dangerous wingers in Serie A, Momo Salah was one of the most creative players on the pitch tonight. His pace caused chaos against Asamoah and Lichtsteiner, who just couldn’t keep up with him. No matter what they did, they just couldn’t get close to Salah and he was a driving force throughout the game for Roma, moving to a False Nine role later on.

Radja Nainggolan: 8

A Man of the Match performance from the Belgian, whose goal really sealed the victory for Luciano Spalletti’s side. His powerful display from the middle of the park set Roma on their way and his box-to-box running made him hard to man-mark. Nainggolan is great at those late runs into the box and getting onto the end of attacks, something he did with great effect tonight, despite a calf injury.

Stephan El Shaarawy: 7

With his goal, the former Milan man was dangerous going forward and was causing problems all night. The strike itself may have been fortunate, but his run towards goal before shooting showed that Juve had trouble containing him with their backs to goal, something the Italian preyed on.

Diego Perotti: 6

Playing essentially as a False Nine, Perotti was fairly quiet tonight and wasn’t individually outstanding, but in the overall picture he was a big part of how Roma played. With Perotti dropping deep, he allowed the wingers and one midfield runner to bomb forward, something they did many times. So on a whole he may not have made an individual difference, but he was key to how Roma set up.

Substitutes

Clement Grenier: 5

Coming on for Perotti, the Frenchman was brought on the sure up the midfield, and whilst he wasn’t outstanding, he was solid enough.

Juan Jesus: 5

Mainly brought on to waste some time and to give Nainggolan a standing ovation, there isn’t much to write home about on Juan Jesus.

Francesco Totti: N/A

I don’t actually think Totti touched the ball in his brief cameo, but he still came on to a standing ovation.

Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon: 5

Buffon-1705-_Rudiger-epa.jpg

An uncharacteristic performance from Buffon, as he will have felt he could have prevented the first two goals. He seemed to flap at the Manolas header for De Rossi’s equaliser, and almost just watched El Shaarawy’s spooned effort roll past him. It did seem like just an off night, but Buffon will be disappointed nonetheless.

Kwadwo Asamoah: 5

If Asamoah was a regular full-back for Juve, they ought to be worried, because he doesn’t seem to ever be comfortable dealing with players who have pace. Every time a Roma forward attacked him, he couldn’t stop them. Salah had him beaten all night and he was poor defensively.

Medhi Benatia: 6

With most of the Roma attack going down the wings, Benatia had very little to deal with apart from crosses into the box. Had Edin Dzeko been on the pitch, it would’ve been a completely different story, but with Perotti dropping deep, the centre-backs didn’t really have much to mark.

Leonardo Bonucci: 6

Much like Benatia, Bonucci wasn’t too bad in comparison to some other Juve defenders. He was able to clear most of what came his way, and because of the attacks going wide, Bonucci was only able to clear what was in his path, nothing more, and nothing less.

Stephan Lichtsteiner: 5

Lichtsteiner-1705-_De_Rossi-epa.jpg

If the Swiss international is still at Juve next season, I will be very surprised. He doesn’t seem to have the pace to deal with some of the top attackers and he got left in the dirt a few times over the course of the 90 minutes. Lichtsteiner has been a very good servant to the club, but maybe his time is up with the Old Lady.

Stefano Sturaro: 6

Despite his industrious attempts to break up the Roma play, Sturaro wasn’t fully in the game this evening. It seemed to pass him by, and he just couldn’t get into his full flow. A poor game by his own standards, but I highly doubt he will let this affect him too much.

Miralem Pjanic: 6

Nainggolan-1705-_Juve-_Pjanic-epa.jpg

On his return to the Olimpico since his move in the summer, Pjanic wasn’t his usual best. When Juve were on top of the game, he was the instigator and put balls into good areas, spreading the play. But when Roma had their turn to dominate, Pjanic was left stranded. A rare type of performance, but it’ll probably be a while till we see another one like this.

Mario Lemina: 6

Despite his well-worked goal, Lemina was largely absent in the game. He didn’t do badly, but he didn’t do all that much. His performance was very middle of the road, and wasn’t spectacular. It’s hard to be critical over someone who didn’t do anything yet scored a goal, but Lemina was reasonably average.

Mario Mandzukic: 6

Something wasn’t quite right with Mandzukic tonight. Whether it was Rudiger marking him tightly or something else, but it wasn’t the usual Mandzukic. He did try to get involved and change the game, but nothing was doing for the hard-working Croatian.

Gonzalo Higuain: 6

Higuain-1705-_Nainggolan-epa.jpg

Being isolated in a game can be tough for any striker, but when you don’t get any service it can be hell. Higuain did well on the Lemina goal with his lovely deft lay-off to the midfielder, but that was about the only thing of note he did in regards to changing the game.

Juan Cuadrado: 5

A lot of Juve fans have been critical of Cuadrado for his inconsistency, and I can imagine that a lot of stick will be heading the way of the Colombian. He’s definitely had worse games over the course of the season, but he just didn’t get involved as much as he should’ve done.

Subs

Dani Alves: 6

Alves was brought on by Max Allegri to try and spark some life into the game, and he couldn’t quite do it. He did give it a go, but it was almost like too little, too late when he was introduced.

Paulo Dybala: 6

The Argentinian changed the pace of the Juventus play when he was introduced, but he couldn’t do it on his own. He charged at the Roma defenders, but every time he tried, about three players closed him down.

Claudio Marchisio: 6

His introduction didn’t do much to the game, but towards the latter stages he brought the control back to Juve. He gave the forwards licence to go forward, giving them some decent enough passes.

Leonardo Bonucci concedes Juventus “switched off” in recent weeks and the 3-1 defeat to Roma shows “we need the real Juve to win it all.”

The Bianconeri had been unbeaten in Serie A since their 2-1 to Fiorentina in January, but with this setback have picked up just two points from the last three rounds against Atalanta, Torino and Roma.

“Tonight’s match has to be extra motivation going into the Coppa Italia Final,” Bonucci told Rai Sport.

“On Wednesday we are playing for a trophy and it’ll be tough against a Lazio side that is in great shape both mentally and physically. I expect it to be a great game and we want to do well.

“With Roma it was an issue of mentality, because in the second half we switched off and were made to pay a heavy price for that. In the first half, I’d honestly struggle thinking of times when Roma caused us problems.”

The defender is wanted by Manchester City and Chelsea, so was asked about his future.

“I have a long contract with Juventus, we are concentrated on the Treble. This moment is too important and wonderful to be thinking about the future.

“We know that we need the real Juve to win it all.”
